Shuri Castle - Burning castle of the Ryukyu Dynasty (Ref)
Shuri Castle, the royal castle of the Ryukyu Dynasty, was once the political, economic and cultural centre of that maritime kingdom. The date of construction of Shuri Castle is not known, but it is thought to have been built in the late 13th and 14th centuries during the Gusuku period.
Until the end of the 16th century, the Ryukyu Kingdom remained independent in turbulent East Asia, as did Korea and Vietnam, but was invaded and ruled by the Satsuma clan (now Kyusyu, Japan), and became a vassal state in the early 17th century.
After several fires and war damage, and repeated rebuilding, the World Heritage Site Shuri Castle was once again destroyed by a sudden fire on 31 October 2019, which lasted about eight hours and destroyed nine buildings and historical heritage sites, including the main hall. It is currently being rebuilt with a view to restoration in 2026.
The first burning occurred in 1453 during the struggle for the throne that followed the death of King Shō Kinpuku of the 1st Shō dynasty (Shiro-Furi Rebellion), when the castle was completely destroyed. The second fire, in 1660, took 11 years to rebuild, and the third fire in 1709 destroyed the main, north and south halls.
After the Ryukyu Disposition following the establishment of Okinawa Pref. by Japanese Government in 1879, the main hall and other buildings of Shuri Castle lost their role as the seat of government and were sold to the Japanese Army's 6th Division (Kumamoto, Japan) as a military camp and then to Shuri Ward (later Shuri City), which used them as school buildings for girls' schools.
It was almost completely destroyed during the Battle of Okinawa (WWⅡ) in 1945 and the construction of the University after the war, leaving only a small portion of the castle walls and building foundations remaining.
Full-scale reconstruction was considered in the 1980s, and the restoration work, which took about 40 years, was completed in January 2019. In October of the same year, a mysterious fire destroyed the castle again.
Shuri Castle, which has been repeatedly persecuted and burnt down but continues to revive, seems to symbolise Ryukyuan culture itself.

I hope everyone had a lovely weekend! I had a very good spring break week. I will miss volunteering at the mission, but hopefully I will spend time there over the summer in between camp, the summer trip, and my ballet intensive. This summer will be another busy one, but I still have 44 days left of studies and should focus on them to not get too far ahead of myself.
I am really enjoying the book I am reading. It is a little creepy, but that almost makes me want to read more so I can learn about the mystery of what is going on! The sequel was on my reading list for this year, so I had to read this one first so I understood any new information in the next book. If anyone is curious about my reading list, I utilize the local librarian guide for my age group. It helps me explore books and genres I may not normally read otherwise. In the attitude of silence the soul finds the path in a clearer light, and what is elusive and deceptive resolves itself into crystal clearness. Our life is a long and arduous quest after Truth.

7+1 Classic American Pocket Knives
Tumblr media
1) Toothpick, slipjoint folding knife, white plastic scales (shell knife, aka Handle Knife Patent), nickel silver bolsters, slender clip-point blade a.k.a. toothpick (not to be confused with the Arkansas toothpick, which is an ironically named humongous knife). Tang stamp "COLONIAL PAT No. 231064", 11 cm closed, 20th century (mid-20th, maybe?)
2) Fish knife, slipjoint folding knife, cracked marble celluloid handle with a fish-shaped shield, nickel silver bolsters, carbon blades: 1 clip-point and 1 saw/hook-remover/bottle-opener. Tang stamp "Imperial PROV. USA", 12.5 cm closed, c. 1946-1956.
3) TL-29 a.k.a. electricians knife, linerlock folding knife, rosewood handle with brass inset "TL-29" and lanyard ring, nickel silver bolster, brass liners, carbon steel blades: 1 spear-point and 1 wire-stripper/flat screwdriver. The name stands for "Tool, Lineman, number 29", originally from the U.S. Army Signal Corps. Tang stamp on the ricasso "CAMILLUS NEW YORK", and on the blade "TO RELEASE PUSH CENTER LOCK TO LEFT", 9.5 cm closed, circa 1960s.
4) Trapper, slipjoint folding knife, dark red bone (peach seed jig) handle with nickel silver shield "CASE", nickel silver bolsters, brass liners, chrome vanadium carbon blades: 1 clip-point and 1 spey. A Case model #31950 CV. Tang stamp on main blade "CASE XX" and 8 dots for date, and on the spey blade "USA 6254 CV), 10.5 cm closed, 2022.
5) Engineers knife, slipjoint folding knife, jigged bone handle with steel shield "USA" and lanyard ring, steel bolsters and liners, carbon steel blades: 1 spear-point, 1 bottle-opener/flat screwdriver, 1 punch, 1 can-opener. Identical pattern with an ubiquitous camping knife, later adopted for the U.S. Army Engineers. Tang stamp "CAMILLUS CUTLERY CO. CAMILLUS N.Y. USA" (4 lines), 9.3 cm closed, 1942-1945.
Tumblr media
6) Buck 110 a.k.a. "Hunter", lockback folding knife, ebony handle, brass bolsters, stainless steel blade. Tang stamp "BUCK 110 USA" and date symbol, 12.3 cm closed, 2018.
7) Barlow, slipjoint folding knife, derlin (synthetic) handle, nickel silver bolster with fancy scroll work, carbon steel blades: 1 clip-point and 1 pen-blade. A Schrade #206, a.k.a. "Grand-dad's barlow". Tang stamp "SCHRADE USA 206", 8.5 cm closed, 1976-1983.
+1) Hunting knife or "Bowie knife", full tang fixed blade knife, jigged bone handle, carbon steel blade. The outlier, neither American nor a pocket knife, but made for the American market and advertised as a "bowie-knife" *, with its iconic clip-point blade. Tang stamp on the ricasso "ALFRED WILLIAMS SHEFFIELD ENGLAND", and on the blade "EBRO" between two Maltese crosses, 22 cm total, circa 1890-1920.
Tumblr media
* For collectors, a "bowie" is a knife made for carrying (as opposed to keeping in your kitchen or toolshed), for the American market (regardless of where it was manufactured, the most famous ones are indeed from Sheffield), and somewhat arbitrarily, from 1827 to 1865 (from the Sandbar Fight to the end of the American Civil War). A more generous date range goes to the end of the 19th century, from 1827 to 1900. Everything else is up in the air: it can be big or small, simple or fancy, fixed blade or folding, with a clip-point or dagger or any other blade pattern, and of any materials. Today most people associate the term with a large fixed blade knife with an intense clip-point blade, regardless of when and where it was made.
P.S. I'm missing a stockman knife, and I want very specifically a Case medium stockman with clip, spey and sheepfoot blades, and a nice bone handle (pattern stamp 6318SS).

SHIP REPAIRS
TORPEDO BLISTERS - The new torpedo blisters are a slightly different design and square off at the bottom below the waterline. This design change will make the new blisters easier to maintain increasing their longevity. The torpedo blisters are now completely plated over.
Tumblr media
View of the forward and midship starboard side. Note how the blisters abruptly end before curving under the hull, this is the main design change we've made which will reduce future maintenance burdens.
Tumblr media
Stern end of the starboard torpedo blisters. The blisters are fully plated up now.
Tumblr media
Steel draft marks being installed on the stern, with chalk markings for the marks that haven't been installed yet.
Tumblr media
A lot of plating has been installed underneath the ship, between the keels. Most of this is difficult to photograph due to low lighting.
Tumblr media
Draft marks installed on the bow (a matching set is installed on the opposite side).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A bulkhead repair in one of the ship's tanks. After hot work is done, the tank will be washed out as much as possible and coated.
COATING - The inside of the blisters, and the ship’s hull will be coated to protect against possible corrosion.
TANK CLEANING - Tanks inside the ship are being inspected, cleaned, and repaired if need be. Some will be coated with a marine coating to help prevent corrosion.
LEAK TESTING - All welds continue to be tested for leaks. They are done via vacuum box, dye penetrant, or magnaflux depending on the area.
SUPERSTRUCTURE REPAIRS - A lot of steel deck and structure is being replaced on the various levels of the ship’s superstructure. There are some very serious issues that have to be addressed before this area will be ready for tourism once again.
Tumblr media
A reproduction splinter shield or "gun tub" to be installed above the Signal Bridge for a Mark 51 Gun Director.
Tumblr media
The incorrect splinter shield or "gun tub" that has been cut off and is being replaced.
Tumblr media
The opposite side incorrect splinter shield, which will also be cut off and replaced.
Tumblr media
A look up from the Signal Bridge at the sheer volume of scaffolding in place for superstructure work.
AFT FIRE CONTROL TOWER - Work continues in the AFCT as the old grating that was installed in 1988 has been completely removed and replaced with a steel deck. Small repairs to the bulkhead are currently ongoing as the plan is to have it look as it did in 1945.

On today's episode of what the absolute fuck, turns out the Dutch security service spent literally decades spying on Dutch holocaust survivors and the Dutch Auschwitz Committee, a support and advocacy group for concentration camp survivors.
They were marked as an extremist organization and a possible threat to society with "communist" sympathies. And this happened until the 1980s; reading the article, it's worse than I expected after hearing about it, and absolutely disgraceful. Like, they reported on memorial services for the holocaust, and sent informers along on memorial trips to concentration camps. Because these were obviously severe threats to Dutch society /s.
Links to the story in English, it's a pretty good summary of the main article in Dutch:
In Dutch, from the national news service, and the investigative article that broke the story, it's paywalled, so I'll put the text under a cut:

The world was horrified by the existence of the bomb-the first weapon of mass destruction. But how could such an appalling tool be invented? In The Bomb, Didier Alcante, Laurent-Frédéric Bollée, and Denis Rodier have created an exhaustive and definitive work of nonfiction that details the stories of the unsung players as well as the remarkable men and women who are at the crux of its history and the events that followed.

As a lesson in history, here is Battleship Yamato, Japan’s “mascot” in WWII.
Yamato being a word for the “Japanese Spirit or Resolve” as well as being the name of a region and an ethnic group. At 263 meters long and 56 meters tall, this 72.000 ton monolith was the biggest warship ever built in all of recorded history. It is also considered to be one of the most colossal wastes of money in modern civilization. That’s right, at the cost of 5 to 8 billion dollars today, this ship was almost never actually employed and ultimately sank while protecting the homeland near Kyushu. It was believed that as long as the ship sailed, Japan would win the war. Having sunk in April of 1945, August was just around the corner in declaring Japan’s defeat and the end of World War II. With a total of 9 main guns capable of firing 1.4 ton shells at 40 meter distances, and 206 varying guns including machine guns to complete the package, this ship had two massive disadvantages. One being that it could not fire below a certain angle, and was highly vulnerable to underwater attack. That, alongside Japan’s terrible team work when it came to navy and aerial forces led to its downfall. However, credit goes where credit is due, this ship did not go down without a fight. It took 300 American planes, 20 torpedoes, 6 bombs and more to sink it. It is believed that continuous strikes detonated much of its ammunition, resulting in a blast that killed over 3000 people (along with the drowning). Finally, Japan was one step behind America’s military advances, still having to calculate the math by hand, while America had computers.
Today, you can visit the Kure Maritime Museum, to see salvaged pieces of this ship, in Kure, Hiroshima.

Gyeongseong Creature - 7/10
This drama is uh... pretty damn dark. But it's very good. It's not a perfect show because I think the pacing leaves a lot to be desired (the middle episodes all take place over the course of one night and it makes the show feel like it's dragging, imo). But as a whole, the show explores some really interesting concepts.
Tumblr media
What really makes this show good is the setting. The setting is what drives a lot of the most interesting themes. The show is set in the final months of WW2 during the Japanese colonial period in Korean. The show takes real things that were happening at this time period (experimentation on humans and the push to develop weapons that could win the war) as a backdrop for a fictional experiment that explores questions about humanity. I'd argue that the show's thesis is that it is our relationships to other people that make us human. The love and responsibility we feel towards others is what defines us.
OK SO. The actual plot of the show. Tae-sang is a rich man who owns a pawn shop. He stays out of politics (even though one of his friends is one of the people fighting for Korean indpendenced) and is just concerned with making money and connections with powerful people. One day the Japanese police commissioner strong arms Tae-sang into finding his missing mistress. At the same time sluths Chae-ok and her father are chasing a lead on her mother who has been missing for 10 years. Plotlines collide and it all leads to Onseong Hospital.
Onseong Hospital has an underground military lab for the Japanese military where they have been conducting experiments on Koreans in an attempt to turn them into a human weapon that can be used in the war. (Keep in mind that this is set in spring 1945 so... yeah you can see why the Japanese military is desperate to find something that will give them an edge in the war.) The do eventually achieve success and turn one of the subjects of the experiment into a massive and deadly creature (the creature that gives the show its name). Can the creature be tamed? What does the existence of the creature mean for humanity? Will the main characters even survive?
Allegedly there is going to be a second season and I think a second season could potentially turn this into an 8/10 or 9/10 series but for now I think there is a bit of untapped potential that keeps the show from being truly great.

It was YEARS ago, but I remember seeing a headcanon that said basically that a nation person appearing was treated like an omen or premonition. Like America appearing instead of several colony personifications or like you said there just being Ita and Romano. A connected headcanon I've seen is that the nation people themselves occasionally get premonitions of future major events, like I think I remember seeing art of America getting a premonition of the atomic bomb being made.
That's cool!! I also sort of used the same headcanon in my fic about Germany's birth, although I think in the revised version I posted on AO3 I cut out a small part where this premonition aspect was more prominent.
I think Himaruya himself isn't too sure about this aspect. The problem is that, since Hetalia was born as something random and wasn't meant to have that much of a lore compared to how it later turned out, even he as the author has to "rebuild lore aspects" in retrospect, trying to match together the puzzle pieces he had already scattered on the table. Like, the existence of two Italies out-of-universe was merely called by the need to have a contraposition between the surrendering South that fundamentally switched to Allies after the armistice of September 8 1943, and the North which was still part of the Axis under the name of Italian Social Republic (or Republic of Salò), fundamentally a Nazi-German puppet State. This also explains why Himaruya thought of two Italies instead of three, despite Italians culturally, historically and geographically perceive Italy as divided in three parts: North, Center and South. The fact that Hima thought of Feli and Romano as circa "from Rome upwards" and "from Rome downwards" is visually what Italy looked like after September 1943, before the Allies and the Italian Resistance started their chasing to push Nazis further and further up in their retreat. Rome was considered theoretically an open city, but de facto it would still be subject to strict German control until early June 1944, when the Americans finally managed to enter Rome and were met with the Romans' enthusiastic support. Italian Social Republic, retreating more and more to the North, lasted from September 8 1943 to April 25 1945 (which would be celebrated in Italy as a National Holiday from then on), when it fell and Italy as a whole was liberated from Fascism.
This is also the reason why Feli and Romano's characters were initially established to respectively like and dislike Germany. Romano criticizing Feli for hanging out with Germany and Japan was most likely inspired by this. But I digress.
The point is, since many of the characters' traits (especially in regards with the main cast) are based on the Countries' geopolitical behaviors during WW2, all the Nationverse lore that Himaruya came up with afterwards was sort of binded by this and so the lore comes off as inevitably a bit contradictory, with different scenarios that fit very well to describe the lore of certain characters but not others. Each needs their own specific pair of shoes that rarely fits anyone else, don't they? :O
So like, I do think the Italies having been babies for so long miraculously fits well if we think of them as the embodiment of the 'Italian sentiment' as a whole rather than singular pre-unitary States ... And perhaps Feli was only mistakenly believed to be Venice, for instance. It'd have indeed caused Venetians a lot of thoughts and self-criticism to see their little personification never growing up no matter how flourishing the Republic of Venice would get! :O
... But I guess this explanation wouldn't work at all when it comes, for instance, to Germany since the pre-unitary German States are established characters, albeit rarely used by Hima. Though I don't know Germany's history in much detail so maybe some stretchy explanation could be given here too ... Speaking of which, the very existence of the Kingdom of Genoa already messes up my view on the baby Italies' lore but shhhh. Man, I really wonder if Hima ever put a lot of thought on this, or if he already decided there's no escape to contradictions and he's just rolling with it now. Tbh I wouldn't blame him at all, it's impossible for all of the lore to make sense since Hetalia wasn't born with it in mind but was built on the go little by little, most likely.
... And I know even less about American History, but I think it' makes'd make sense that the personifications of colonies never existed because from early on, people sailing to America had in mind to built a 'better somewhere'. Hence they all had the same, unifying ideal in mind, even though they had differences and even contrasts with each other based on how they wanted their 'better somewhere' to be like.
Nations getting premonitions of future sometimes would also be an interesting thing to explore!

View from the mainmast of USS New York (BB-34), while the ship was at New York Navy Yard, in February 1946. Workers are preparing the ship for her last operation. She served as a target ship during the Atomic Bomb Tests in the Bikini atol as part of Operation Crossroads.
Note: most of the AA guns and their splinter shields have been removed. On the foremast are SK air search set with SG surface search radar antennas. On the starboard side, only the 35-foot motor boat, 40-foot utility boat and 26-foot motor whale boat left of her original complement of 8 boats. The Curtiss SC-1 Seahawks on the turret catapult and main deck.
Originally these planes intended to provide observation support during the planned invasion of mainland Japan, will now they will used test the effects of an atomic blast. In fact, while she was in Pearl Harbor for repairs during the summer of 1945, the Navy took the opportunity to make some alterations and upgrades for this planned invasion. The aforementioned Seahawks were to replace the Vought OS2U Kingfishers she lost to a kamikaze attack during the Invasion of Okinawa. She was repainted in Measure 21, like her sister. Her worn out 14 inch guns were replaced. These guns were never fired since Japan surrendered two months later.
