Adventurous explorers of the extremes meet up. 70 years ago, May 29 - 1953, two members of the British Himalaya expedition, New Zealand mountaineer.beekeeper Edmund Hillary and Nepali-Indian sherpa Tenzing Norgay conquered Mount Everest / Chomolungma (8,8 Km high). 63 years ago, January 23 - 1960, Swiss oceanographer/engineer Jacques Piccard and US Navy officer Don Walsh reached the deepest point in Earth’s ocean, Challenger Deep in Western Pacific Ocean (10,9 Km deep). Outside the bathyscaphe submersible “Trieste”, a Rolex Submariner diving wrist watch survived the extreme pressure at the Ocean floor. Moreover, Jacques Piccard often wore two Rolex watches, one on each wrist. Between 1933 & 1953, Himalaya expeditions had been sponsored by Rolex, so Rolex 6098 watches were worn to the top of Mount Everest, but British-made Smiths A409 wrist watches were worn on the top of Mount Everest. However, already on January 26 - 1953, Rolex had patented the name “Explorer” for their upcoming line of time only watches. 20240429: the History of LEGO Castle day 120. 6091 / 6098 King Leo's Castle (2000, 538 pieces, 149 different parts) -King Leo is the first of eight minifigures in this set, with a chrome gold crown, a yellow minifigure head with black pointed eyebrows and crows feet and a full white beard with mustache, a light gray torso with printed blue front with a yellow lion head on a red triangular background and blue arms, and light gray legs with printed blue and yellow fringe on a black printed belt with red and yellow markings. The King Leo minifigure is used in four sets and two photo frames. -Princess Storm has a red three feather plume in her black helmet with black visor, a yellow minifigure head with black eyes and eyebrows, red bangs and lipstick, a dark gray torso with black arms and a gold and silver chrome breastplate print with pulled in waist line, and red legs with a black belt. She appears in two sets. -Another minifigure for this set is listed as a Knights Kingdom knight and has a dark gray pike helmet, a yellow minifigure head with black curly mustache and goatee and black bangs with gray streaks, a dark gray torso with red arms and a chain mail pattern at the neck and silver breast plate print, black legs with silver plates on the thighs and a black belt with green and silver print, a dark gray sword, and a light gray triangular Knights Kingdom shield. This minifigure is found in six sets. -The next minifigure has a dark gray pike helmet, a yellow minifigure head with black eyes and eyebrows and curly brown bangs and mustache, a dark gray torso with printed silver scale mail and a red necklace, black legs with printed medium brown strips with red diamonds, and a black belt with a printed medium brown and red pattern. This minifigure was found in three sets, 4817 Dungeon, 6091 / 6098 King Leo's Castle, and 6096 Bull's Attack, while the torso and head were also found in 3739 Blacksmith Shop. -Cedric the Bull has a white cattle horn on top of a black Dragon Master / Dragon Knight helmet, yellow minifigure head with gray eyes and black scruffy bangs, sideburns, and mustache, a black torso with dark gray arms and red hands with a small red necklace at the collar and a printed black bull head with red eyes on a jar-shaped gold background with a brown and gold border, and black legs with a printed red and gold belt. Cedric the Bull appears in five sets. -Gilbert the Bad and has a black dragon master / dragon knight helmet, a yellow minifigure head with spikey black bangs, a gray eye, a brown eye patch, black facial scruff, a black torso with dark gray arms and medium brown scale mail printing with a green collar, plain black legs, a brown spear, and a light gray ovoid bull shield. Gilbert the Bad is found in five sets. -Queen Leonora was found in this set and 3739 Blacksmith Shop and has a black cone hat, curly medium brown hair with a red jewel in the center of a printed tiara and red lipstick, a red torso with a printed blue corset, and a red 2x2x2 hollow bottom slope with a blue dress print and a key on a rope belt. -The final minifigure is the white skeleton. Because even tumblr appears to have word limits on posts, I had to cut out a lot of the details from this post. -The trans clear 2x5x5 swivel panel with stained glass knight on horseback and the light gray horse barding were only found in two sets. -The light gray 3x4x6 castle turret wall with window was only found in three sets. -The dark gray 1x8 with bucket catapult was only found in four sets. -The brown 4x4 round brick with side pin holes was only found in five sets. -The light gray projectile liftarm shaft and the ovoid bull shield were found in ten sets. -This set introduced the 2x3x3 modified brick with lion head design. -The black projectile launcher cannon bottom was introduced in this set. Indeed it was a British-made 33 mm Smiths A409 wrist watch which was worn ON the top of Everest but Rolex 6098 watches were worn/carried TO the top of Everest. Since 1933, Rolex had been sponsoring Himalayan expeditions and secured a patent for the “Explorer” in January 1953. Remember it could have been Rolex first ON top of Mount Everest if British climbers Charles Evans and Thomas Bourdillon made it on May 26, 1953 but had to return after being very close to the summit. Three days later Edmund Hillary & Tenzing Norgay made it to the top! The 200+ years old Pen-Y-Grwyd hotel in Snowdonia - Wales was the birthplace & homebase of British Mountaineering. The place where training and testing of oxygen equipment for those Himalayan expeditions took place. A wonderful setting which was revisited by the 1953 expedition members during anniversaries!
