Comparing systems
Of all the other plural systems we've spoken to and read about, it strikes us as, well, something, that we're most similar to how the Troops for Trudy Chase describe themselves in When Rabbit Howls.
And the differences are important in that comparison as well, because they emphasize the striking-ness of the similarities.
It was sometime well after we'd come out as plural that a friend of ours recommended that book, and we'd already become fairly strongly aware of how our system worked by then. And also what our internal headspace was like when we were conscious.
Things that are different between us and the Troops:
We do not have the type or degree of trauma that they have, and we do not identify as traumagenic (besides differing dysphoria, we can't pinpoint a set of treatment or events that could have caused our plurality, and we have separate memories dating back to learning how to talk and recognize our parents)
We do not suffer nearly the amount of amnesia they have suffered. We do have it, but it is rooted more in the here and now, the day to day. Otherwise, our memories are collectively strong, detailed, and fairly easy to dig up. Especially of our early childhood.
We do not have dead system members. Everyone who was born in our system is still alive. We do have people who have retired or gone on sabatical, but they can be pulled forward and tend to share memories of what they've been doing while away in our subconscious mind. We see them in dreams frequently.
We may be quite a bit bigger.
We have an enormous and continually growing number of introjects that we call liaisons, who autistically mimic people and characters we know, and special interest them.
We don't have an excess of energy. If anything we are more drained of energy. We overwhelm our body, which is exhausted and must sleep a lot. And we do not fritz out electronic equipment, which behaves in a very stable manner around us.
We have two original system members, Jenifer and Eh, who have shared our body from the beginning. There was no one person we were "supposed to be."
Things that are similar:
We have protectors, trauma holders, persecutors, littles, frontrunners, and the like. We may have a few who act as gatekeepers, even, though we haven't been able to identify them, and it seems to be more of a shared responsibility.
And we have an ancient being that supposedly comes from outside our system and is helping us to manage things.
More strikingly, we work together a lot, feeding each other memories as directed by our subconscious team.
In fact, we can create an empty person, similar to the Woman, who is not really their own identity and ceases to exist when we withdraw our support from them. A kind of suit we can inhabit like a group of mischevious kobalds or raccoons.
We're VERY switchy.
They have a tunnel, and we have always perceived our pysche as existing in a big round abyss that is bottomless and has the endless void above it. And we see ourselves coming from that abyss as they see themselves coming from that tunnel.
We have so many different hobbies and skills, and can reconfigure our brain to learn new weird artistries with some effort by switching out who is supporting the frontrunner, or even create new headmates to handle new things.
But most importantly, the way they describe experiencing their shifts and interactions is VERY similar to our experiences. Perhaps they have a bit more awareness of the back of their mind than we do, but what we've been able to perceive and remember before we ever read their book was nigh identical.
It strikes us that we are such similar systems in basic mechanics, while having clearly different origins. And the differences in origins also seem to match pretty well the differences we have in outward traits and struggles.
They have more intense trauma of a type we do not have, so they experienced more amnesia regarding their childhood. And that trauma has hurt some of their members so severely that they have died, for all intents and purposes.
The closest we have to that are the frontrunners who worked the hardest to pretend to be a man in the 39 years of our life we were in the closet as a trans person. And they've just gone on extended vacation to recouperate. And some of them have returned to transition with the rest of us, coming out as non-binary.
That's it. That's what we're thinking about before therapy today.

'Excelsior' News Update!!!
For anyone still following my Hetalia superhero AU fanfiction, 'Excelsior', I just want to let you know that I am not dead and I have ABSOLUTELY NO INTENTION OF ABANDONING THIS STORY.
As previous Author's Notes will tell you, I originally began this story in 2015 when I was a sophomore in high school; now, almost five years later, I'm a junior currently enrolled in university, so as you can well imagine, I haven't had any time to post new content as my present fall semester has easily been the hardest semester I've ever taken, especially as I have intentions to double-major in Philosophy and Sociology, with long-term ambitions to pursue a Master's in Sociology.
However, I am by no means abandoning this story, for even though I no longer actively participate in the Hetalia fandom as I did when I was a teenager, I still love this story for all the wonderful people it has allowed me to meet both online and offline. In fact, in what few moments of free time I've managed to accrue for myself, I've been working on the next chapter and planning the course of events surely to follow, so as my winter break is only a few weeks away, I'll hopefully be able to publish chapters 39 and 40 in time for Excelsior's fifth birthday.
But more than anything else, I want to thank you all again for sticking through this unusual time with me--your heartwarming comments and concerns have been a joyous reprieve from a truly trying time in my life, and I can't wait to continue the adventures of Arthur and Alfred with you all. So thank you immensely for your patience, and with luck, there will be not one, but two new chapters to celebrate five whole years together.
Until then? Stay awesome. I know you will.

But again, I can’t really find any connections here. It was pure errors and not a scrambled hidden message like I went into this thinking.

CDXG CELEBRATION (Cuban Press Release by CO8ZZ). The Cuba DX Group will
be celebrating its 39th anniversary with special activity on September
1st, it will be 39 years since a small group of Cuban DXers in Havana
founded the Grupo DX de Cuba and marked with it, a before and after
in the history of Cuban amateur radio.
For this reason, the GDXC will grant the certificate “Aniversario 39”
to those who manage to work a certain number of members of the group during
the month of September. The categories of the certificate will be Gold,
for those who contact 20 stations of the total valid, Silver for those
who do it with 15 and Bronze for those who work 10.
All contacts will be valid regardless of band or mode. The GDXC’s members
valid for the certificate are the following: CM2XN, CM3EFM, CM6ARD, CM7OK,

the south shore of Issyk-kul Lake between September 2-15th. Activity
will be on various HF bands using an Inverted L, phased verticals, and

AS-080. Han, DS2GOO, will be active as DS2GOO/3 from Sapshi Island
(KDN F26) between August 24-26th. Activity will be holiday
style (family vacation). He states, “I will be in front of my

are planning to activate Europe’s 5th most wanted IOTA, Shiant
Isles, as MS0INT between August 23-25th. Activity will be on

EU-191. Dan, YO9FNP/LB3TI, will once again be active as YO9KXF/P from
Insula Fericirii between August 16-19th. Activity will be
holiday style (working) mainly on 40/20 meters using mostly
CW, but with some SSB and FT8. He will have 100 watts into

NA-134. Bo, OZ1DJJ, will be Active as OX3LX from Upernavik Island
between August 22nd and September 5th. Activity will be on

villa at Labrelotte Bay, Castries, St. Lucia (NA-108, WLOTA L-1336)
between August 23rd and October 4th. Activity is usually on 160-2 meters
using CW, SSB, AM, RTTY, WSJT and FT8. QSL via his home callsign. He

J6, ST. LUCIA. Members of MARCO (The Medical Amateur Radio Council, Ltd.)
will be active as J68MD from St. Lucia (NA-108) during the CQWW DX SSB
Contest (October 26-27th) as a Multi-Single/All-Band entry. Equipment
will be a K3 transceiver, multiband yagi and various wire antennas. QSL

K4, UNITED STATES (POW-MIA Special Event). Look for special event station
K4MIA/8 to be active between September 13-22nd. Activity is to honor and
support our Veterans. Operators are Linda/N8LRS and Metro/W8MET acting as
a sister-station from Ohio for the 4th year. This event was originated by
Mike, K4MIA, from Florida with other sister-stations involved. Details can
be found on the ARRL Web site under “ON-THE-AIR” under SPECIAL EVENT under
the call-letters of K4MIA. Also, this special event will be in the
September QST. Please take part in this special event for our Veterans.

KH4, MIDWAY ISLAND (Update #3/Postponed). Ron, KH6DV, reports on August

For a number of very good reasons the Midway expedition is being post-
poned. Some of the things we are working on will take a number of months
– one will take 4 or 5 by itself. We could postpone for just a couple
months but then we would be operating during the summer with its associated
terrible conditions.
WE HAVE DECIDED TO PLAN FOR THE FIRST TWO WEEKS IN OCTOBER 2020
The changes we are working on will make for a much better and more
exciting expedition and are well worth waiting for.
KH8, AMERICAN SAMOA. Atsu, 5W1SA, is once again active as KH8C from
Tutuila (OC-045) until August 25th. Activity is mainly FT4 and FT8

OJ0, MARKET REEF (50 YEARS CELEBRATIONS UPDATE — OJ0O THIS WEEK).
[Edited Press Release by Martti, OH2BH, dated August 15th, — OJ0O QRV FROM
SATURDAY, AUGUST 17TH THRU AUGUST 24TH] — Multiple OJ0 callsigns were
activated during the summer season 2019 and the party wagon is to continue
this coming Saturday, August 17th, with weather permitting as always. Up
to this point some 35.000 OJ0 QSOS were made. These include some 6M magic
to U.S. along with many other great openings.
Jun, JH4RHF, will lead his mostly oriental team thus an effective Far
East penetration would be expected. Additionally Miro, OM5RW, had joint
the team as another low-band expert with his standing as one of the OM7M
lead operators along with his powerful first ever Z60A new DXCC partic-
ipation..
The team is JH4RHF, JE6HIB, DS4EOI and OM5RW with on-site support by
Henri, OH3JR/OJ0JR and Pertti, OG2M/OJ0MR. They are well on their way
to Helsinki, Finland, from where they fly tomorrow to Aland Islands to
catch their boat. The wind will be 10m/s due South and should allow their

It is also estimated that September 19th, will see another OJ0-operation
in the Scandinavian Activity Contest (CW) led again by Market veteran
Henri, OH3JR/OJ0JR, with activity continuing until Saturday, 28th. This
include dismantling the permanent antennas and taking back the used equip-
ment.

VP2V, BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS. Operators Jeff/K5WE and Bill/N5AQ will be
active as VP2VEM and VP2V/N5AQ, respectively, from Tortola, British Virgin
Islands, beginning October 4th through October 13th. They will operate on
all bands 160-10 meters, mostly CW with some RTTY, FT8, FT4, and SSB.
Their equipment will include K3 radios with 400 watt amps. Antennas will
include a Hexbeam, a Crank-IR vertical, and dipoles. Depending upon a
reliable internet connection, logs will be uploaded to ClubLog daily.

VP6R PITCAIRN ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS (Updates). The following was posted
on the VP6R Web page (https://pitcairndx.com/news-and-updates/), August
14th and 17th with pictures:
* August 14th: Today the RV Braveheart completed the loading of its
cargo, including all our Pitcairn Island Dxpedition equipment. Our
Flex radios, ACOM amplifiers, Yagi and vertical antennas, masts,
feedlines, computers, network gear, tools, and our personal luggage
is all aboard and securred. The vessel will depart Tauranga, New
Zealand early next week.
We’ve had a slight change in plans which benefits everyone. The
Braveheart will make a preliminary stop at Pitcairn on September 6th.
Our gear will come off the vessel and be stored on the island until
we arrive on about October 17. This should get us on the air faster
and circumvent any potential weather delays.
Things are moving quickly now and our team is anxious to get under-
way. If you’ve supported us, we thank you. If not, please consider
doing so. Cash is flowing out very rapidly now. No matter what, let’s
do this thing and have some fun!

Radio Association (LCARA, N8BC) will activate special event station W4G
for the 103rd anniversary celebration of the National Park Service in
conjunction with the James A. Garfield Presidential Home in Mentor, OH.
This Callsign was chosen so that they could use the phonetics on Phone
of “Washington For Garfield” (Washington 4 Garfield). The celebration
will take place on the grounds of the Garfield Presidential Home on
Sunday, August 25th. They will have stations operating on various bands
and modes to make the special event callsign workable by Amateurs across
North America and possibly the World. They expect numerous stations will
be calling them to say the least!

On why you might want to survive
I wrote this just now for a friend who is starting a journey of horror. It might be needed by others, I don't know. It's what I have.
OK, so, here's a thing I'm learning about the human ability to survive. I'm going to summarize my story, but I want to be clear that I'm not implying that what you are going through is going to be easier than my story, even if it maybe seems like it is. Conversely, what you're going through may seem much, much worse, but it's all relative to what we each have experienced in the past, what we're prepared for, and what our individual bodies and minds can take. What's hard for you will be hard for you, regardless. Do not compare. It's the end message that's important, but my story is necessary to understand it.
As we know, I'm autistic and disabled by lifelong PTSD from being mistreated by allistic society, and I have been experiencing extraordinarily severe physical dysphoria that feels like sexual assault since I was a young child, and I'm trans, and I have a really interesting mental illness that has one of the nastiest social stigmas and makes it really hard to function in society. I'm 42. At 35 my life started to come crashing down around me. Coming out as trans at 39 helped a little bit, but things have still been falling apart since. Part of that is that I'm disabled, can't work, can't get on disability, and am going through a divorce. I'm now living with my parents, in a house that is completely full of PTSD triggers.
During that process, I had over 40 suicidal episodes in the course of 3 years.
At least once every month, I went through my entire life in my head, all of my goals, all of the things I valued, all of the things I loved, everything, trying to find a reason to hang on, and I gave up on all of it. Systematically. Nothing could stand up to the pain and agony I was experiencing. Not even all of it together.
The only reason I survived each episode was that I was too exhausted, in too much pain, to act.
I effectively died every month, just to keep existing. For three years. And, I'm not recovered from this. I never will be.
Things are getting a little easier. The suicidal episodes come less frequently. But I still have them. And they are still a result of real, genuine agony that is worse than my entire life of good experiences altogether. It's not a distortion of perspective, not just brain chemicals, it is really that bad.
I'm slowly becoming more and more estranged from my family, my only support mechanism.
I am becoming more physically and neurologically disabled. And, on top of that, our country is going to hell fast.
In my life, I've learned that hope and faith are lies that will torture and kill you. And nothing can change that for me.
But, I'm still alive. And while I'm still alive, I'm noticing a few things:
I have friends who, momentarily, here and there, are capable of making me cry with joy and laughter.
The things that are funny are funnier than ever before.
The things that are beautiful are more beautiful than ever before.
What accomplishments I can still achieve still feel like accomplishments.
And the unbearable agony, and incredible loss that I continue to experience, the despair that grows, the fear and terror that I share with everyone at what's going on, all of that can't seem to touch the things that are funny or beautiful or fulfilling. It all only makes them stronger.
The horror still overwhelms and outweighs the beauty, if I do the equations. Especially if I pin my hopes and faith on the horror being overcome. But it doesn't touch the beautiful things. It makes them more beautiful.
And, the horror will kill me some day. It absolutely will. It will kill you, too, and destroy everything you love. That's inevitable. You might not survive to see that destruction, but entropy ensures it.
But in the here, and in the now, and as long as you have nows, while you're still alive, there are things that are beautiful. And if you look at them, and embrace them, and nurture them, you can at least live in them for a time.
And, if you happen to be able to share them with others, it makes it all even better.
And you might get lucky, and the storm of horror that is coming down on your life right now might eventually abate, and it is absolutely possible to take these things that are beautiful that you've found during that storm, and build something new and amazing.
It's going to suck. It's going to never stop sucking. But the sucking can lessen. And if you live through the worst of it, you can keep doing amazing things. They might be new amazing things, in new circumstances, maybe smaller than before, but no less amazing for it.
And that breath of fresh, calm air that you get in the eye of the storm, should it come to you, is unbelievably good. It's worth experiencing.
I can't tell you that things will work out. I can't tell you that you will survive. I can't tell you that you have the strength and ability to do so. But, I can tell you that it's possible. It's absolutely possible. And the effort it takes is a lot less than it looks.
Holding on sometimes means relaxing, and floating, and focusing on breathing, and letting the storm take you to new shores.
And I can tell you that you remain a source of good in this world. And that if you do find those new shores, you have something worth planting there, even if it feels like you have nothing.
Your beauty is worth sharing. It's worth cultivating. It's worth finding a place for it to grow.
Because if somebody else finds it, it will help them cultivate their beauty and take it to their next shore.

Assonance
Assonance Definition
Assonance refers to the repetition of identical stressed vowels in nearby syllables when they are followed by different consonants or consonant clusters. Even though sometimes omitted for brevity, the latter part of the definition is equally important as the first one, because If identical stressed vowels are followed by identical consonant sounds, then the literary device in question is not assonance, but rhyme.
Thus, the phrase “white knight” is an example of rhyme; however, the title of Dylan Thomas’ poem “In the White Giant’s Thigh” is an example of assonance. In both cases, the “long i” [aɪ] is repeated in all of the stressed syllables, but only in the first one the consonant behind it sounds identical as well (“waɪt naɪt” vs. “waɪt ˈʤaɪənts θaɪ”).
Assonance was frequently used as a substitute for rhyme in early Celtic, Spanish, and French poetry, which is why it is sometimes (somewhat unsuitably) still called “vowel rhyme,” “vocalic rhyme” or even “half rhyme.” When Augustan and Romantic English poets started using rhymes on an almost regular basis, they saw in assonance a great way to amplify the musical effects of their poems. However, at least since the second half of the 19th century, modern poets once again have started employing assonance in place of a rhyme for the exact opposite effect.
Some of literature’s most skillful users of assonance are Alexander Pope, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allan Poe, Algernon Charles Swinburne, and Dylan Thomas.

Assonance in a Sentence
Example #1: Idioms
For nearly a week afterwards, the domestics observed significantly to each other, that Miss Isabella was as ‘nice as pie!’
OED lists this 1855 Which: Right or Left? sentence as the earliest occurrence of the idiom “nice as pie.” As is obvious, the idiomatic expression—as many others (“a good look,” “a dead end,” “high time,” etc.)—is made memorable through the use of assonance, as both “nice” and “pie” contain the “long i” but not repeating consonants.
Example #2-3: Proverbs
Variety is the spice of life.
In the proverb above, all of the nouns contain the “long i” [aɪ]. Interestingly enough, according to a wide-ranging 2012 study, about a quarter of English proverbs assonate. In the example below, assonance of the “long o” [əʊ] is effectively resolved in the “short o” of the last word (“moss”):
A rolling stone gathers no moss.
Example #4: Nursery Rhymes
As I was going to St. Ives,
I met a man with seven wives,
Each wife had seven sacks,
Each sack had seven cats,
Each cat had seven kits:
Kits, cats, sacks, and wives,
How many were there going to St. Ives?
The nursery rhyme above is actually a riddle – so do try to solve it if you want a break from all this literary talk with a simple mathematical exercise. Highly assonant, this riddle employs effective assonance of both the “long i” (in “I,” “Ives” and “wives”) and the “short e” (in “met,” “man,” “seven,” “sacks,” “had,” “cats,” and “many”). In one instance (“sacks”/”cats”), assonance works as a nice substitute for rhyme.
Example #5: Advertising Slogans
Finger lickin’ good.
KFC’s famous slogan—“finger lickin’ good”—works so well because of the assonance of the “short i” repeated three times in the initial four syllables. However, it works even better when the first two words are paired up with KFC’s actual product—”finger lickin’ chicken”— which adds two more [ɪ]’s to the mix and spices the assonance with a dash of rhyme.

Assonance in Poetry
Example #1: Alexander Pope, First Satire of the Second Book of Horace 25-26 (1733)
Rend with tremendous Sound your ears asunder,
With Gun, Drum, Trumpet, Blunderbuss and Thunder.
Alexander Pope was a deft user of many rhetorical devices, and assonance was certainly not an exception. In the second verse from the couplet above, he manages to achieve an almost onomatopoetic effect, combining the assonance of the “short u” vowel [ʌ] with bilabial consonants (“b,” “p,” and “m”) to create the effect promised in the first verse: “tremendous sound” which rends the ears asunder.
Example #2: John Keats, “Ode on a Grecian Urn” 1-2 (1820)
Thou still unravished bride of quietness,
Thou foster child of silence and slow time…
There are not many verses more beautiful than the two which open John Keats’ great “Ode on a Grecian Urn.” However, it often goes unjustly unnoted that a large portion of this beauty the verses owe to the assonance of the “long i” which Keats masterfully uses in all five nouns present in the excerpt: “bride,” “quietness,” “child,” “silence,” and “time.” And to make the verses even more sweet-sounding, this grand assonance is nicely prepared by the humble introductory assonant pair “still unravished,” tightly linked through the repeated use of the “short i.”
Example #3: Algernon Charles Swinburne, “August” (1866)
The colour of the leaves was more
Like stems of yellow corn that grow
Through all the gold June meadow’s floor
Even detractors of Algernon Charles Swinburne hail him a musical genius; and, indeed, his mastery of the phonetic literary devices is, to say the least, impressive. Even though published in his debut poetry collection, “August” already exemplifies this brilliantly. The repeated “o” sounds—whether short or long—permeate the excerpt, appearing in almost every second word: “colour,” “more,” “yellow,” “corn,” “grow,” “gold,” “meadow,” and “floor.” This produces a highly euphonious effect, which Swinburne strikingly manages to sustain throughout the whole poem.
Example #4: Gerard Manley Hopkins, The Wreck of the Deutschland I.7.1-4 (1875)
It dates from day
Of his going in Galilee;
Warm-laid grave of a womb-life grey;
Manger, maiden’s knee;
Considered by many to be perhaps his greatest masterpiece, the 35-stanza Christian ode “The Wreck of the Deutschland” demonstrates wholly Gerard Manley Hopkins’ masterful use of not only his unique contributions to prosody (instress and sprung rhythm) but also of some much more common literary devices such as assonance and alliteration. The “long a” hauntingly dominates the four verses excerpted above, appearing no less than seven times, twice in combination with the alliterative “d” and “m” (“dates”/”day” and “manger”/”maiden”).
Example #5: Dylan Thomas, “Ballad of the Long-Legged Bait” 49-52 (1941)
Whales in the wake like capes and Alps
Quaked the sick sea and snouted deep,
Deep the great bushed bait with raining lips
Slipped the fins of those humpbacked tons.
Not many modern poets—if anyone—have managed to replicate Dylan Thomas’ verbally dense and rhythmically resonant verses. In the thirteenth quatrain of his “Ballad of the Long-Legged Bait,” he demonstrates how exceptionally skillful he is in using assonance to produce enduringly evocative imagery. And it’s fascinating to think that even though seven words in the stanza use the “long a”— and six of them are monosyllabic—none of them rhyme with each other: “whales,” “wake,” “capes,” “quaked,” “great,” “bait” and “raining”. “This symphony of vowels and consonants proves Thomas a master,” notes William York Tindall in A Reader’s Guide to Dylan Thomas. “Not Hopkins himself could put sweeter sounds together.”

Assonance in Literature
Example #1: William Shakespeare, Henry VI, Part 1 III.3.48 (1591)
When Death doth close his tender dying eyes.
In Shakespeare on Theatre, Robert Cohen provides a list of all 136 different adjectives that William Shakespeare uses in his plays to vividly describe the human eyes. As in the example above (“dying eyes”), many of them are quite melodious, assonant adjective + noun sets. Can you find where the Bard uses three other assonant pairings of this kind: “admiring eyes,” “desiring eyes,” and “fiery eyes”?
Example #2: Edgar Allan Poe, “Annabel Lee” 38-39 (1849)
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling—my darling—my life and my bride…
Much like Swinburne, Edgar Allan Poe was a skilled user of assonance, mainly for its musical effects. To some—like the French symbolist poet Charles Baudelaire—this made him the designer of verses “carved like diamonds”; to others—such as Aldous Huxley—Poe’s use of phonetic literary devices seemed analogous to a sensitive man wearing “a diamond ring on every finger.” You can understand both sides of the argument if you try reading the above couplet out loud. As you can already see, here, in merely two verses, Poe uses the “long i” no less than eleven times! However, it is difficult to deny how melodious and memorable this makes the ending of “Annabel Lee,” Poe’s last complete poem.
Example #3: Robert A. Harris, Writing with Clarity and Style (2003)
So flows the river, going past the town, its whole load of toxins, fish, and sediment pouring evermore into the sea.
The example above is borrowed from Robert Harris’ celebrated “Guide to Rhetorical Devices for Contemporary Writers.” It’s only fitting to borrow the analysis of this highly assonant sentence as well. “The repeated ‘long o’ sounds in the [highlighted] words,” explains Harris, “create a drawn-out sonorousness, suggesting both flow and inevitability of movement.”
Songs with Assonance
Example #1: Alan Jay Lerner, The Rain in Spain
The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain
In My Fair Lady, the 1956 musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion, Eliza Doolittle is a Cockney flower girl incapable of breaking her dialect speech patterns even after hundreds and hundreds of elocution exercises with Professor Henry Higgins. For example, instead of saying “reɪn” and “Speɪn” she says something along the lines of “raɪn” and “Spaɪn.” She finally gets it while singing the above verse in which five words (three of which rhyme) contain “the long a” [ei]: “rain,” “Spain,” “stays,” “mainly,” “plain.”

Example #2: The Doors, Light My Fire
You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you
Girl, we couldn’t get much higher
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire
Widely considered one of the greatest songs ever written—reaching #35 on Rolling Stone’s list of 500 Greatest Songs of All Time—The Doors’ “Light My Fire” offers an exquisite example of the sonorous power of one-vowel assonance. In addition to the rhymes—which necessarily all contain the “long i” [aɪ] (“liar,” “higher,” “fire”)—the lyrics also add many other words which include the same vowel sound and, thus, serve to build and/or keep up the momentum: “I,” “light,” “try,” “night.” And this goes on in the second verse as well, which adds few more assonant words: “time,” “mire,” “try,” “funeral pyre”!

Example #3: Radiohead, Exit Music (for a Film)
We hope that you choke…
Radiohead often use assonance in place of rhyme in their songs. As you can hear in this all but a textbook example, it is this literary device which has helped them pen some of the most hauntingly beautiful and yet chillingly disturbing verses. Rhyme may be at times too complete and childlike to carry the burden of heavy thoughts; assonance is much more adult and generates a lingering effect. Fittingly, the verse above is not the only one in “Exit Music (for a Film)” which employs assonance. You can also hear it in “the long a” of “today/ we escape” and “the long i” in “breathe/ keep breathing.”

The Hurricanes lost a coach that I feel they wanted to keep. So them giving Rod Brind’Amour a chance – I’m fine with. He was an assistant for six years and to me he was always one of those players who had natural leadership and mentoring skills. But… Don Waddell?
Waddell was general manager of the Atlanta Thrashers for 11 years, and after putting together an expansion roster that posted a 308-401-111 record. And for that brilliance he was promoted to president, and under his guidance the team was moved to another country. He didn’t go with them. And with that track record, he’s the best man for the job of turning the Hurricanes around. Of course he is.
Could Waddell be the man in charge of two teams before they move to another country? That would be something.

I had some blowback from that tweet last week, and I understood and understand that the Caps are the weakest team still left and that Nicklas Backstrom was either going to miss some time or he’d be playing with one hand. But sometimes heart and determination mean a lot. A close friend of mine has always beat me in tennis. And for the last few years I’ve been in better shape and frankly because of it I think I’m a better player now. Still can’t beat him. Last time we played was two years ago, because last summer was a write-off for me. I had a 4-0 lead. Still lost. I crumbled in confidence and he willed the win. I think that’s where Ovechkin is. He’s willing this. And it helps that Lars Eller has decided to be a star player.
So Caps head home up 2-0 and they can now rest Backstrom Tuesday. If they win again, they can rest Backstrom Thursday. Each game they win they buy Backstrom two more days of healing.
With three points Sunday, Eller has 11 in the postseason and sits fifth on the team in playoff scoring. This on the heels of a career high 38 points. He turned 29 a few days ago. As I noted last month, I grabbed Eller in January or February for a late draft pick just as a rental and I’d drop him in September. Again I’m wrestling with the dilemma of him possibly getting more offensive situations next season because of what he’s doing in the playoffs. If he can get 50 points and help me in the playoffs, then I’d like to hang onto that. Someone talk me off the ledge here, am I being victim of something I preach never to be a victim of: hype from a one-off hot streak?

Tom Wilson picked up a pair of points and now has nine in 11 games. He was playing on the Ovechkin line again, and even though he did that 62% of the time during the season and managed only 35 points, that was still a career high and he’s now 24 and about to hit his prime years. And 14 goals doubled his previous career high. He also had 29 points in his last 61 games. The Preds did have 43 contracts. But they signed two European free agents over the week and are up to 45. The NHL max is 50. Anyway, I think the Preds signed two players with no fantasy upside in center Carl Persson and defenseman Filip Pyrochta. So they used the contracts up on two AHL players who have the ability to fill in on a depth role if injuries strike. Pyrochta is just 21 and has some potential in several years, if the organization nurtures that. But this team is deep on defense, it goes without saying, with plenty on the way. So Pyrochta is in tough. In the end, it’s about assets – just as it is in fantasy hockey.
I also wanted to touch upon Eeli Tolvanen. Mike Clifford nailed it the other day and I agree 100%, but I wanted to expand further. The situation reminds me of Alexander Radulov back when he was a year or two older than Tolvanen. The Preds were deep then too, and Coach Barry Trotz was notorious for bringing in prospects slowly. Radulov earned the job before camp in 2006 (as Tolvanen has), and he earned the job during camp (as Tolvanen will). But Radulov was sent to the AHL anyway. And he embarrassed the league with a ridiculous 18 points in 11 games, forcing Nashville to call him up before he laid down any further beatings. With 11:38 of average ice time – ice time that he had to force, mind you – he scored 18 goals and 37 points in 64 games. And that’s precisely what you’ll see from Tolvanen. There’s no room for him, he’ll be held down, but he’ll force the matter. I think he even starts the year in Milwaukee and that will last all of three or four weeks. And then his ice time will be held down because they won’t have room for him. But he’ll work his way up the lineup and have spurts of production when injuries happen. Off the cuff I would guess 35 points in 65 games, very similar to Radulov. And then his ascension up the scoring race starts from there over the ensuing three or four years.

Once-promising prospect Ville Pokka has signed to play next year in the KHL. He was the key part of the Nick Leddy deal in Chicago’s trade with the Islanders. They ended up trading him for a depth guy in Chris DiDomenico. Pokka was a second-round pick, 34th overall in 2012. His second season in Rockford he had 45 points in 76 games – and he went seriously downhill from there, coming nowhere close to that over the ensuing two seasons.

Just as frustrating? Many of the recipes don’t feel like good fit for you. Either because they’re too complicated, have the wrong mix of ingredients, or just don’t sound all that appetizing.
Instead of getting frustrated, we’ve simplified our favorite healthy breakfast recipes into categories that will work for you.
Hate to cook, or have almost no time to do it? Not a problem.
Burned out from eating breakfast staples like oatmeal and eggs over and over again? Don’t worry, we have alternatives.
Wrangling with an addiction to bacon? Never fear. We have love for your bacon love.
Based on feedback we’ve received from our coaching clients, here are some of the most common problems you face at breakfast — and the meals that can get the job done for your life and body.
The breakfast problem: You don’t have time to eat.
If your mornings are so hectic that you barely have time to chew, much less cook, you aren’t alone. Far from it. In fact UK-based market research showed that nearly half of all people have to eat breakfast outside of their home at least once per week. A similar report in the U.S. showed a growing number of people need portable breakfasts.
Here’s the good news: There are plenty of healthy breakfast options that don’t require you to start your morning at the stove. In fact, you won’t even need to dirty a dish. Simply prep these the night before (or even on the weekend), and you have grab-and-go healthy breakfasts that can roll out the door when you do.
Healthy breakfast recipes: eggs on-the-go
Eggs on the Go (full recipe here) – Get a high-protein breakfast that’s packed with veggies that fits in the palm of your hand. Tastes so good you’ll feel like you sat down for your favorite omelette, but you can do it on the road. You get it all with no mess and no clean-up. Spend 25 minutes making these one night — you’ll have eliminated the need to think about breakfast for the rest of the week.
Healthy breakfast recipes: overnight oats
Peanut Butter Banana Overnight Oats (full recipe here) – Get all the health benefits of oatmeal, and the protein to start your day right, no cooking required. You simply mix the ingredients together the night before, which takes about 5 minutes. The next morning, voila! Breakfast is ready, and so are you.
Healthy breakfast recipes: PB&J energy balls
PB&J Energy Balls (full recipe here) – Here’s a helpful hand-friendly snack that’s great if you have to eat on the go (i.e. in your car). Like the overnight oats above, there’s no cooking required. A food processor is all you need. Knock out one batch on a weekend, and your healthy breakfasts are ready for the week.
The problem: All you want is cereal.
People are eating less breakfast cereal than they once did, but a bowl of something crispy plus milk remains a morning ritual for many. The good news: You can eat cereal and have it be a healthy start to your day.
Added sugar. While it’s not true for all cereals, plenty of breakfast cereals come packed with added sugar. Look at many cereal labels and you’ll see “sugar,” “corn syrup” (a.k.a. more sugar), or plenty of sugar’s other code names (honey, agave nectar, etc.) listed early and often. You do not have to fear sugar, but you should aim to keep your intake of added sugars to below 150 calories per day if you are a man, and 100 if you are a woman. Some especially sugar-packed cereals (usually ones targeted at kids) deliver more than half of that per serving. And FYI: No one eats a single serving of cereal. Your best bet: Check the nutrition labels. Look for a cereal with more fiber and a sugar content in the single digits.
Low in protein. Cereals come from grains, and grains generally aren’t high in protein compared to their total calorie count. Yes, adding milk helps. But why not steer your breakfast toward even greater balance by adding a protein source like eggs on the side? Doing that provides a mix of carbs, protein and healthy fats. Here are the two main knocks against cereal (and how to solve them):

Healthy breakfast recipes: Breakfast for champions
The True Breakfast For Champions (full recipe here) – Crunchy, crispy, sweet and satisfying, this bowl delivers all the whole grain goodness without much added sugar. [Honey is an ingredient, but you can ditch it if you want.] For many, the blueberries and bananas provide more than enough sweetness. Combine them with the fiber from the steel cut oats and healthy fats from the almonds, and you’ve got everything you need to fuel your body to win the day.
The problem: You hate oatmeal.
Why does seemingly every health outlet suggest eating oatmeal? There are several reasons to love it:
Studies indicate eating oatmeal lowers total cholesterol, and – notably – the “bad” LDL cholesterol. That’s because oatmeal is high in fiber and soluble fiber can help reduce cholesterol.
Another benefit of fiber: It makes you feel fuller for longer. That helps you keep your appetite in check.
Studies show that people who eat oatmeal consume less total calories at their next meal compared to those who ate breakfast cereal — especially among overweight people.
But look, nobody can blame you if oatmeal isn’t your thing. And there are plenty of ways to get fiber—the main driver behind many of these benefits—without turning to oats. A piece of high-fiber bread (we like Ezekiel 4:9, but look for any bread with “100% whole grain” or “whole wheat” on the label) can have nearly as much fiber as oatmeal. Toast it with a side of bacon or eggs (or both!) and you’ve got a healthy, well-rounded breakfast.
Or if you’re open to the idea of a bowl, but just don’t want it to be oats, try this new take:

Goji Coconut Quinoa Bowl (full recipe here) – We don’t like ranking whole foods against one another, but one could argue that quinoa is like Oats 2.0. You still get a fiber-rich carbohydrate, but quinoa is also high in protein. The almond slices, goji berries and coconut flakes don’t just add taste and texture, they also amp up the nutrient content.
The problem: You hate most healthy breakfast recipes.
If you are fed up with pancakes, cereal, oats, and everything else that most people think of as breakfast foods, you aren’t alone. In fact, Born Fitness coach Natalie Sabin counts herself among you.
“Breakfast foods have just never been my thing,” Sabin says. “So I make meals that I like, no matter what time of day it is.” Which is why she routinely opts for non-traditional morning meals like:
High-protein salads

The problem: You don’t eat enough protein.
With all of the delicious carb-dense options for breakfast, it can seem like the breakfast gods forgot about protein. Sometimes the easiest route is a protein shake, and here’s how to make sure it doesn’t taste like watered down protein powder:

Eggs are an awesome breakfast staple for numerous reasons:
Eggs are a source of high-quality protein.
Eggs provide 18 vitamins and minerals, including several that many people are deficient in, such as zinc.
The healthy fats eggs contain makes many of these micronutrients easier for your body to absorb.
Some of the protein strains within eggs have anti-cancer and tumor suppression properties.
People knock eggs for being a source of cholesterol, but here’s the thing: There’s a difference between dietary cholesterol (what you eat) and blood cholesterol (what’s coursing through your veins). Numerous studies indicate the cholesterol from eggs has little to no effect on your body’s actual blood cholesterol levels. A body of research even shows that egg consumption has positive effects on HDL (“good”) cholesterol in the body. (Here are three different examples.)
