#2004 Eagles
Text
McNabb didn't "choke" in the Superbowl. And give Andy a break about mismanaging the clock when he did everything else he possibly could to coach the Avengers into nearly defeating Thanos without any deus ex machina bull shit.
Just pure gumption and genius coaching. But nothing beats Brady and Bellichek when Gronk and Brady are in sync. Even as a fucking AARP member with the fucking Tampa Bay Rays he's still formidable and a regular contender for the Superbowl today.
In the 90's The trio was an unstoppable force that just plowed up and down the field and every possession ended in a TD.
The 2004 Eagles kept up with Brady.
And that hall of fame defense fucked him up like the spirit of Reggie White possessed them. They made him cry and throw a tantrum and got dirt on his uniform. And turf in his face mask. Hitting and hurrying Brady almost every down against the very best offensive line money and guaranteed Superbowl rings can buy.
And fucking Brady just got even better.
And yet. And yet with Terrell Owens on a broken leg playing half speed yet doing outrageous plays and a nervous McNabb playing extremely competently using his legs and working well with Westbrook doing his magic and Owens showboating, Andy Reid almost did it. He almost got his offense to keep up with Brady and slow Brady down enough to give Donovan a chance to win.
But McNab let the pressure get to him at the end and stopped having fun. And began to hesitate and second guess instead of just instinctively having fun and playing at his usual superhuman level.
He just got nervous. Probably for the first time in his life. A real chance to beat Brady! And win the Superbowl for Philly at last! With his favorite teammates and coach Andy Reid! (Andy Reid is what Joe Paterno pretended to be.)
Donovan McNabb got nervous because only Tom Brady wouldn't get nervous at the thought of facing Brady let alone hoping to beat him in the Superbowl when he was playing top of his game. So Donovan "choked" and made some shit plays at the end there. But up till then he had danced up and down the field vs the Patriots defense and kept up with Brady blow for blow. McNabb was beautiful that day.
Andy Reid was on his game too and against all odds almost lead the Avengers to victory against Brady.
But Brady and Bellicheck with Gronk on his game is absolutely invincible. Just an unstoppable force where you are hoping for a failed 1st down run and and short second to make for a long third and then some kind of miracle stop or on third and long. The best defense was to try and draw fouls. Because you can't stop the guy. You just have to slow him down and hope for one or pray for two bad throws this 3rd down.
Like, third and thirty five was difficult but doable most possessions.
Eagles actually hit that smug father fucker a whole bunch on his way up and down the field. It didn't stop him. But it was hella fun to watch as my team almost beat Brady in his prime, but nothing could ever beat Brady in his prime. Even on his bad days he was nothing short of perfect and intelligent and creative and instinctual that borders on godlike.
I hate his guts and I just don't know why. He seems hella nice. He's too good looking and dates a model but good for him on all of that. I'm happy to see decent guys win the lottery. But I still don't like him. Such is life. I wish him well in everything but football. Get sacked Brady.
But yeah, no body, no matter how well prepared, trained and superhuman can be perfect for the entire Superbowl. You are going to lose some possessions without having scored.
Tumblr media
The Eagles were a true Super Bowl team. Any other decade they would have won any Super Bowl against any team outside of the 2000's Patriots. They made every offensive line in the NFL look silly and picked off future hall of famers every other down.
The Lombardi Trophy belonged to Brady back then. Pure and simple. It was just who is going to lose spectacularly in the Super Bowl after playing big fish in a small pond till now.
Eagles almost beat Brady in his prime, but nothing can keep up with a demigod.
I submit that the 2004 Eagles were a feat of genius by Andy
He was able to cobble together a really good team around his star QB and other key players who are all hall of famers now. And I don't know how he snatched up Owens. Owens was amazing. He just had a big mouth and was a showboat. He backed up every boast too and made the greatest future hall of famer DBs miss every single time. And everyone loved it. Except the fucking racist NFL.
Andy managed to cobble together this amazing 2004 Eagles team and got them working together even though they didn't like each other at first and help them run together so well that he almost took this army of reject NFL superheroes up against Thanos and won.
He had a Lawful Good Deadpool instead of Captain America leading the charge. And Neutral Good Don't Give A Fuck Decent Guy Deadpool With a sharpie up his sleeve carving up the captains of Thanos. And Mysteriously unknown preternatural undersized Black Panther Westbrook conducting acrobatic feats y'all wouldn't believe today. Even still that man's shit was like watching Black Panther dance around dealing broken ankles and first downs out of third and long every time McNabb got in trouble.
Even the Avengers can't beat 2000s Brady.
Give McNabb and Andy Reid their due respect. They almost did the impossible together. Don't give them such trash about minor little lapses in perfection. You aren't the God of Noah.
You are an Eagles Fan! And you cheered through fucking Buddy Ryan's bullshit. Andy Reid and McNabb almost took down Brady in his prime! You should celebrate that team!

I've seen like maybe 20 mins of Centurion (2010) and it's so obviously just a cheap, less eloquent, less beautiful, more cheesy gorey version of The Eagle which is wild considering The Egale came out a year later........

In a 2004 interview with the Telegraph, Julian and Noel discussed the Howard/Vince dynamic!
Julian: “I’m a bit arrogant, a bit of a dreamer. I think I’m better than I am and tend towards cynicism whereas Noel is consistently optimistic and when everything goes wrong for me, he comes out on top.”
Noel: “That’ll generally come about through some arbitrary piece of business, like a certain hat I’ll be wearing which he finds ridiculous, but ends up saving us from a race of eagles.”

alf @qvincvnx has tagged me for 9 no-skip albums. his post warned me that this would be the case, but even so: i was surprised how hard it was to nail down my list for this. i kept identifying albums i loved and being like, well. i do skip one.
BUT i have now identified a set of albums that i'm happy with, so without further ado:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Tribe Called Quest – We Got It from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service (2016) • Janelle Monáe – The ArchAndroid (2010) • Billy Woods – Aethiopes (2022)
Franz Ferdinand – Franz Ferdinand (2004) • Aesop Rock – None Shall Pass (2007) • David Bowie – The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1972)
Ghetts – Conflict of Interest (2021) • Open Mike Eagle – Component System with the Auto Reverse (2022) • Pusha T – DAYTONA (2018)
And to pass the challenge forward: @gpuzzle, @aquaticsasquatch, @siegesquirrel42, @uudistajanne, @mrn2electricboogaloo, @allhailklisz, the mantle is yours. (Apologies to any civosphere people I may have forgotten – I think I got all of you who've made it to tumblr, but of course the mind is a fallible beast.)
Quantifying and taxonomizing things I like is always a satisfying lil brain exercise for me, and indeed this was a lot of fun to think through. One thing that made this an extra challenge was the profusion of short intro/interlude/skit tracks in hip hop albums – it led to some odd scenarios such as 3 Feet High and Rising, where I like all of the SONGS on the project but still end up skipping five or six tracks because some of em are basically just paratexts :b
Also damn I knew I mainly listened to relatively recent music but it's still a bit sobering to realize that my list is 8/9 stuff from the 21st century lol

The origin and meaning of the names of the protagonists of the Barbie movies.

Hot take, but every Gigan design after the original has been a step down
Tumblr media
60's Gigan (to me) is one of the most perfect kaiju designs ever created. Strange and alien, with a hodgepodge mix of parts that seem as though they shouldn't make work together- the neck and body of a goose, the head of an eagle, marlin-like fins, big dragon-like scales, and a bunch of pointy metal bits to imply cybernetic augmentation, all tied together with one big, red eye. It's a design that tiptoes up to the line of being too busy, but stops exactly where it needs to. Gigan, to me, is the template for "monster of the week" kaiju. Shows like Ultraman and ESPECIALLY Sentai owe Gigan a lot for demonstrating how you do that kind of design right.
And then they had to go and make Final Wars Gigan.
Tumblr media
Don't get me wrong. I don't *hate* Gigan's 2004 look. It's cool and it fits the vibe of the movie. But my god, is it over-designed. It's like they looked at every one of his major features and turned the goth slider up to 11. It's not terrible, but it's a lot busier than it needs to be. On top of that... I mean let's just be honest, he looks more like some kind of outré kink outfit- and to be clear there's nothing wrong with that within the context of Godzilla Final Wars (arguably the horniest Godzilla film). I can't imagine him working in any other context though. Plop the original Gigan into virtually any other Godzilla movie (or really, almost any kaiju/toku film/show/etc.) and he makes sense. Millenium Gigan is cool, but he'd be really hard to fit into something that didn't already have a similar aesthetic.
Gigan Rex corrects the course a little bit.
Tumblr media
I guess on some level I only half count this because it's not a suit, but that's also just kinda how things are now. It works for me, I just feel like it leaned into the anime vibes a little too much. This says, "cult classic PS2 RPG," to me more than it says, "Godzilla." The longer blades are cool though and I do like the idea of him being red. Not a fan of the pink eye, that should have been blue or something.
Though I suppose I can take solace in the fact that neither of them are the Godziban designs...
Tumblr media
I'm not sure if I love it or if I fucking haaaate it.

hey frank! tell me about some animals you like
My favorite animal is the whale shark! It's the biggest fish. I have a cartoon whale shark I got in a museum a long time ago. It's about a foot long. I also like echidnas. I've been to a zoo and pet an echidna. Echidnas look a little bit like hedgehogs, but they know a lot of things about the world that hedgehogs don't know.
My favorite animals to eat are boar (I also like emu, kangaroo, rabbit and crab, but boar is the most important) and squirrel (I also like crane, fox and deer, but I think squirrel is the most important.) There's no better flavor than squirrel flavor. I don't want to eat lions. I think it's important to limit the number of animals we eat to a small number. A small number of species. Not more than 100 species. I think in the future if we're not careful we'll eat up all the animals, and then there will be no more animals for us to eat. We need to think about the animals before we eat them, and also before we exterminate them.
My favorite animal to exterminate is the flesh-eating bacteria. I was in Russia in 1912. I saw the flesh-eating bacteria. The flesh-eating bacteria ate up all the meat, and there was nothing left. The flesh-eating bacteria was all that was left of all the animals. It looked like they had fought to the end. The flesh-eating bacteria won. In the end, we lost all the animals, except for the flesh-eating bacteria. The flesh-eating bacteria lived on and on, but we couldn't survive without the animals. And that's why I know I can't have whale sharks anymore. I ate up all the whale sharks in 2004. There's no more whale sharks, except for those in museums.
Oh, and my favorite animal movie is "Fantastic Planet." You can go to a place called Fangtan. It's where the creatures live. My favorite creature is the twelve-legged squirrel-eagle. He's the main character. And he needs to eat all the squirrels and cranes. That's what the movie is about.

From: American Air Museum in Britain
Major General Carroll McColpin was born in 1914 in Buffalo, New York. When he was 14, he built his own plane and taught himself how to fly. He quickly became aware of how Britain was fighting to repel the Germans and felt that the US would eventually become involved in the war. Rather than wait and take that chance, he joined the RAF in 1940.
He was sent to Dallas for flight training in the RCAF before being sent to England. He eventually served in all three RAF Eagle Squadrons, became CO of No. 133 (Eagle) Squadron, and soon had five aerial victories to his credit. As a Major, he became the first of three pilots to receive the British Distinguished Flying Cross on October 4, 1941.
In September 1942, he turned No. 133 over and transferred to the USAAF. He had an impressive career with 12 enemy aircraft destroyed and served three tours in the ETO as CO of the 407th Fighter-Bomber Group and then the 404th Fighter Group.
General McColpin was one of the most decorated and admired fighter pilots of the war with 280 combat missions and 12 aerial victories. Some awards include the Air Force Legion of Merit with two Oak Leaf Clusters, both the US and British Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Air Medal with six Oak Leaf Clusters, and both the Belgian and French Croix de Guerre. He was decorated at Buckingham Palace by King George VI.
He retired from the USAF in September 1968 and died at the age of 89 in 2004.

The ache in her arm steadily grew worse, the claw marks starting to throb. Mike had helped her clean the blood from her skin, turning on the shower so she could stick her arm under the spray. The water flowing over the wounds had nearly driven her to tears, the nerves raw and angry. He pulled her to his chest as the water irrigated the wounds, guiding her breathing by taking deep breaths of his own and letting them out slowly. Once her arm was dry, he spread antibiotic ointment on gauze pads and pressed them to her arm, wrapping more gauze around it to keep them in place.
A strange sort of restless energy started building in her muscles and she found herself pacing, shaking and clenching and unclenching her hand. She knew they were watching her, could feel their eyes on her, but it didn't feel threatening. Introductions had been made. The one Sy called "Walker" was August Walker, the one with the shock white hair and amber eyes was Geralt Rivian, and Walter Marshall was the one with a halo of dark curls and a thick beard. Sy's full name was Markus Syverson, but everyone, even his brother, called him Sy. Stephanie got the feeling that August didn't want her there, despite him saying she could stay until her…transformation was complete. He wasn't hostile towards her, just severely uninterested. Sy, Mike, and Walter were the most outwardly welcoming and supportive. Geralt seemed…indifferent.
"Okay," Mike said, "I hate awkward silences. Steph, what's your favorite movie?"
"Michael." August said.
"If she's gonna be staying here, we might as well get to know her." Mike said.
"She's not staying." August reminded him and Mike flashed him an annoyed look before turning his attention back to her as she paced.
"Favorite movie?" He asked and she stretched her neck with a roll of her head.
"What genre?" She asked.
"Horror." Sy said.
"The Haunting."
"Julie Harris or Liam Neeson?" Walter asked.
"I saw the remake first and the original later, I like both." She said.
"Favorite band." Mike said.
"What genre?" She asked again and he pulled a small smile.
"Metal?"
"Motionless in White." She said.
"Classic rock." Sy said.
"Toss up between Queen and Journey, Eagles are up there too."
"Classical." Walter said.
"Love Vivaldi and Beethoven. Mozart's Requiem is also a big hit, but not Tuba Mirum."
"Going back to movies," Mike said, "Favorite action flick."
"The second Die Hard with Jeremy Irons."
"Musical?" Walter asked.
"2004 Phantom of the Opera with Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum, and Patrick Wilson." She said.
"Creature feature." Geralt said.
"Toss up between Tremors: Aftershocks and Pitch Black."
"Classic movie." August asked and her eyes, which had been closed, opened and she fixed him with a look at his sudden interest.
"The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, 1947 starring Rex Harrison and Gene Tierney."
"Favorite food." Mike said.
"Japanese anything, and fried cheese."
"Favorite color." Sy said.
"Purple and black."
“Black isn’t a color.” August said.
“Don’t be pedantic.” She said simply and he scowled at her.
"Asmr?" Mike asked.
"Asmr drives me up a wall. I don't understand how people can get enjoyment out of the sounds of someone taking a bite of something crunchy or tapping on a microphone with fake nails. Pisses me off." She said and stretched her shoulders, but stopped with a wince as it aggravated her arm.
“How’s it feelin’?” Sy asked.
“Sore.” She said simply and he pushed away from the wall he was leaning against, going over to her.
“Let me see, doll.” He said and gently took her arm in his hands, pushing up her t-shirt sleeve that was stiff with blood. Unwrapping it gently, he pulled the gauze pads away from it and growled slightly as he saw the ragged claw marks tearing open the skin. It had stopped bleeding, thankfully, but dark lines of corruption branched off from the ruined skin. The skin around the wounds was warm and she winced as he pressed on them, making him mumble an apology. “Upside is, the infection will keep everything else out and it should heal without a scar to show for it.”
“Downside?” She asked, looking up at him.
“Downside is that there is an infection.” He said, “Feral infected you on purpose, couldn’t tell you why. Normally they just kill people. Don’t know why he bothered datin’ you first.”
“Gee thanks.”
“Nothin’ against you, doll, it’s just how ferals are.” Sy said and she nodded, “Seein’ as it stopped bleedin’ and ain’t at risk of goin’ south, we can probably keep it uncovered, but if it starts up again, let one of us know and we’ll wrap it up.”
“Okay.” She said with a nod and he carefully pulled her sleeve back down.
“We should probably get some of your things if you’re going to be staying here.” Walter suggested. “Do you live far?”
“Town over.” Stephanie said and he nodded. “Was camping though when shit went down, if he didn’t get rid of them to cover his tracks, the stuff I brought should still be there.”
“You can show me.” Geralt said, “We’ll bring them back here.”
“I can--”
“No.” Geralt said, “He might be there waiting for you. You’re not going alone.” He let his arms fall from where they had been folded over his chest. “Come on.”
“I didn’t exactly run in a straight line.” Stephanie said, “Do you have a map or something I can look at?”
“Not needed.” Geralt said, shaking his head. “I can track your scent back through the forest.”
“Okay, then.” She said.
“You want me to come with you, sweetheart?” Sy asked.
“No, it’s fine, it should be fine.” Stephanie said.
“Geralt will keep you safe, don’t worry.” Sy said and she nodded, following Geralt as he left the cabin and headed for the tree line.

No, I've never been cheated on, but the way I belt these songs alone in the car would have you think otherwise:
Going through a breakup in the 70s must've been top tier with these 3 on the radio
