A Texas-led bill that would mandate AM radio capability in car manufacturing was blocked from passing in the U.S. Senate on Tuesday.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, requested a unanimous consent decision on his AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act. The legislation was blocked by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, who said the mandate on private companies would be an overstep of congressional power.

For months, Cruz has pushed for vehicle manufacturers to retain AM radio in new car models to protect emergency communication channels and diverse content. He partnered with Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., in May to introduce the legislation, which had broad bipartisan support in the Senate.

A corresponding bill was introduced in the House and has 191 cosponsors, including two Democrats and 12 Republicans from Texas.

AM radio is “enormously important to millions of Texans,” Cruz told The Texas Tribune in October. He noted the platform is essential for diverse talk radio — especially for conservative voices.

“I think silencing those voices is enormously harmful to both free speech but also to a robust democratic process,” Cruz said.

On the Senate floor Tuesday, Cruz pointed to conservative commentators Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, Sean Hannity or Glenn Beck, who all found audiences on AM radio.

“AM radio is a haven for people to speak, even if their views are disfavored by the political ruling class,” Cruz said on the Senate floor. “Rush Limbaugh would not exist without AM radio. The views of my friend, [Rand Paul] the Senator from Kentucky, would be heard by many fewer people without AM radio.”

AM radio in rural Texas and other southern states is also a platform for religious, local news and sports programming. Local stations will also run chain or network programming with more well-known commentators, according to Al Cross, director of the Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues.

Some rural communities are dependent on getting local interest information from a single radio station or single newspaper, Cross said.

“If you allow the manufacturers to not put AM on cars, then you're killing off an essential part of the media landscape of the United States,” Cross said.

Supporters of the bill also point to AM radio’s importance as a means to protect emergency communication channels. A fall 2022 Nielsen survey showed AM radio reaches over 80 million Americans monthly.

“During times of disaster, AM radio is consistently the most resilient form of communication,” Cruz said.

AM radio is used as an alert system by federal, state and local agencies to communicate in times of disaster when other forms of communication fail, like during a power outage.

Cruz said he was confident that the legislation would pass overwhelmingly if brought to the floor for a vote, but since it was blocked on Tuesday it now awaits scheduling by Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

The congressional pressure already provoked change in the industry. Days after the bills were introduced in May, the CEO of Ford announced that the company would keep AM radio in 2024 models.

Car companies started cutting AM radio capacity to simplify manufacturing and because of assumptions that American consumers don’t find AM radio necessary, according to Oscar Rodriguez, the president of the Texas Association of Broadcasters. Companies also can make revenue from car owners’ subscription-only radio services.

“It became very clear very quickly to the automakers that this is a highly valued service that's extraordinarily important,” Rodriguez said. “It's not just an entertainment service. It is an emergency communications service.”

AM station signals cover 90% of the American population, according to the National Association of Broadcasters, and are able to continue operations during power outages.

But a number of national trade associations have defended manufacturers’ right to exclude AM capacity, arguing that FM radio, internet access and text emergency alerts can replace the loss of AM radio.

“This is giving preference to a technology that is facing fierce competition,” said India Herdman, manager of policy affairs for the Consumer Technology Association.

A FEMA strategic plan pointed out that Americans are “moving away” from radio and broadcast television as primary sources of news and information, one reason for emergency managers to prioritize alerts to smartphones and other methods.

Herdman said that a mandate for AM radio contradicts previous congressional action authorizing federal funding for updated emergency communications.

“What are we spending those appropriated dollars for if we're just going to go back to using century-old technology?” Herdman said.

But in a state like Texas, with a significant rural population, proponents of AM broadcasting argue the access is key.

Cooper Little, executive director of the Independent Cattlemen’s Association, said Texans in the agricultural sector rely on AM radio for reports on livestock and markets, as well as severe weather alerts.

“Things happen at a moment's notice,” Little said. “In areas where there's not necessarily cell service, that's how you spread the word.”

Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream; No Ice Cream Machine Required. A Recipe*:

Total Time:

Like two days; this is not a short process

Ingredients: Total (Ice Cream Amount; Cookie Dough Amount [recommended adjustment due to weirdly specific measurements])

Butter, Unsalted**: 1 Stick (1/16 Stick***; 15/16 Stick****)

Light Brown Sugar, Packed: 15 1/2 Tablespoons (1/2 Cups; 7 1/2 Tablespoons)

Granulated Sugar: ~6 3/4 Tablespoons (1/4 Cups; 2 13/16 Tablespoons [measure 2 3/4 tbsp, add just a tiny bit more, whatever you believe in your heart to be an extra 1/16 tablespoon. Alternatively: 2 tbsp + 1/2 tbsp + ever so slightly less than 1 tsp])

Salt: ~1/4 Teaspoons (just a Dash, whatever you define that as; 15/64 Teaspoons [just do 1/4 Teaspoons]

Vanilla Extract: ~3 Teaspoons (2 Teaspoons; 15/16 Teaspoons [basically just 1 Teaspoon. measure a little light if you feel like it])

Gluten-Free All-Purpose Flour: 15 Tablespoons (0; 15 Tablespoons)

Pasteurized***** Liquid Egg Substitute: ~2 3/4 Tablespoons (0; 2 13/16 Tablespoons [see note for Granulated Sugar])

Chocolate Chips: 7 1/2 Tablespoons (0; 7 1/2 Tablespoons)

Milk: 2 1/4 Cups (2 1/4 Cups; 0)

Heavy Whipping Cream: 1 Cup (1 Cup; 0)

Chocolate Syrup: 1 Teaspoon (1 Teaspoon; 0)

Required Non-measurement Tools:

5 Bowls, preferably metal. 2 should be the same, roughly medium capacity size. A third should be large enough to fit one of the other two inside of it with room to spare. The fourth needs to be large enough to mix a very small amount of cookie dough inside of. The fifth just needs to be big enough to hold a cup of flour.

A lid to cover one of your medium bowls (it does not have to be a perfect fit).

Either plastic wrap or another lid to cover the other of your medium bowls (does need to be a perfect fit)

Some sort of mixing instrument. I recommend you use something electric.

Something to stir with, a wooden spoon or rubber spatula, for example.

Baking Sheet.

Saucepan.

Freezer.

Oven.

Stove.

Prep:

Night before starting, get out one of your 2 smaller bowls, whichever is best suited for mixing. Place it in the freezer to chill (we will call this our "freezer bowl")

At some point before making the cookie dough, you will want to Pasteurize your flour. This is the shortest part of the process and keeps you safe from deadly diseases, so it's not really worth skipping: Preheat your oven to 375°F (191°C). Spread your flour evenly on your baking sheet. Place in oven at 375° for 10 minutes. Take out of oven and allow to cool.

Immediately before making the ice cream, take your other two bowls. Fill the larger one partway with ice and water. Place the smaller one inside the larger one so that the ice water will keep it cold (we will call the smaller bowl our "chilling bowl").

Making the Cookie Dough:

(i recommend you wait until after you've already started making the ice cream since this takes not nearly as long)

Add 15 tablespoons Pasteurized Gluten-Free All-Purpose Flour to a small bowl.

Add 15/64 (~1/4) teaspoons Salt to your flour bowl.

In a different mixing bowl, add 2 13/16 (~2 3/4) tablespoons granulated sugar.

Add 7 1/2 tablespoons packed Light Brown Sugar.

Add 15/16 (~1) teaspoon Vanilla Extract.

Add 15/16 stick of room temperature Butter.

Beat mixture until creamy/thoroughly mixed.

Add 2 13/16 (~2 3/4) tablespoons Pasteurized Liquid Egg Substitute, mixing thoroughly as you add.

Gradually add flour/salt mixture into mixing bowl, mixing thoroughly as you go.

Add 7 1/2 tablespoons chocolate chips. (you may choose to break some [doing all will be very tedious] of your chocolate ships into smaller pieces to make them roll into small balls easier. if you choose to do this, i recommend saving the chocolate chip crumbs and instead of adding them to your cookie dough, adding them directly to the ice cream to give it an extra chocolate chip taste even when you aren't biting into a cookie dough ball)

Mix until chocolate chips are evenly distributed.

Roll mixture into small balls of cookie dough (i would recommend placing them in your now empty flour bowl as you go). Balls should be about 1/4 teaspoon or a little smaller than half the tip of your pinky finger. For reference, each ball should be big enough to contain exactly one chocolate chip and still have a little doughy padding on the side.

Place dough balls into freezer to chill so that when you mix them into your ice cream later, they don't break apart.

Making the Ice Cream:

Pour 2 1/4 cups Milk into a saucepan.

Add 1 cup Heavy Whipping Cream to the saucepan.

Add 1/4 cups Granulated Sugar. Stir lightly to avoid clumps.

Place saucepan on stove burner on low heat.

Take 1/2 cups of packed Light Brown Sugar, and sprinkle it into the saucepan (you don't want clumps of brown sugar in your ice cream. so, since you packed it to measure it, you need to de-pack/re-fluff it as you add it to the cream).

Stir until you can't feel any clumps (a little graininess is fine for the time being).

Add 1 teaspoon chocolate syrup. Stir briefly.

Add 1/16 stick of butter.

Sprinkle in a little bit of salt (measure with your heart. i think i shook a salt shaker like 3 or 4 times)

Stir until all ingredients are fully melted/dissolved, no grains of sugar can be felt, and the mixture is hot. A thin film of foam should have begun to form at the top of the cream and be sticking to edge of the saucepan a bit (little tiny bubbles, almost too small to instantly recognize them as bubbles. they'll make the top of the cream look a few shades lighter in color than the part underneath them)

Pour Cream Mixture into Chilling Bowl. (we are done with the saucepan forever)

Add 2 teaspoons vanilla extract. Stir until the vanilla extract does not separate from the cream.

Cover Chilling Bowl and let sit in its ice bath for 20 minutes.

Transfer cream mixture into Freezer Bowl.

a) Place Freezer Bowl back into the freezer.

b) Let sit for 30 minutes to an hour, or until edges just begin to solidify. (this may take many hours depending on the temperature of your freezer) (the amount of time you let it sit in the freezer between mixings will determine how creamy it is when you're done. The longer you leave it in the freezer without mixing it, the more ice crystals will form, and the less creamy it will be.)

c) Take the Freezing Bowl out of the freezer.

d) Beat the mixture thoroughly, until any frozen bits are well mixed into the cream. Your goal is to break apart any ice crystals that have formed and to whip extra air into the cream so it remains soft and easy to scoop when it becomes fully frozen later.

Repeat steps (a) through (d) until mixture has reached your desired level of creaminess. (i recommend making the cookie dough during the first or second (b) interval since you're going to be waiting a while anyways)

Beat the mixture one more time.

Slowly mix your ice cream as you add your chocolate chip cookie dough balls to the mixture. (the cookie dough recipe makes a little bit more cookie dough than you probably want [you would be disappointed if it made less than you want, and there's no way for me to predict exactly how much you want, hence overestimating], so you may not necessarily want to put all the cookie dough in the ice cream. you can use the rest to make 2 or 3 cookies if you want; just make the dough balls cookie sized and place in the oven at 375°F for about 9 minutes)

Mix until the cookie dough balls are evenly distributed to your liking.

Place bowl back in the freezer.

Once it freezes again, you will have chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. do whatever you want with it.

*i made the recipe myself, based on a lot of different recipes for cookie dough and ice cream, separately. The measurements are a little bit weird in some places because of conversions required to not have to get out a whole extra stick of butter just to use half a tablespoon from it.

**i used unsalted butter because it's what i had in the house. if you want to use salted butter, just do your best to adjust the rest of the salt in the recipe accordingly

He sighs loudly as soon as he steps in the house, his back was killing him and his arms felt like rocks. He groans, pressing his palms on his lower back hard enough to hear it crack, easing out a relieved sigh once it happens. Nicole looks over his shoulder, right where his hand was then back at him, “Ouchie!”

“Yeah,you can say that again,Nikki,” he laughs, tossing the keys to the side once he kicks the door closed. He stands there, holding Nicole as the dogs slowly make their way over. Eleanor huffs quietly around him, sniffing his shoes, while Jack decides it’d be a great time to lie in front of his feet and Jolene is sitting, patiently, in front of him as if questioning where Beatrice was.

“Bea needs to stay at the hospital for a little bit.” he tells the dogs, stepping over Jack and placing his sunglasses aside, “And she’s currently with her parents, and I’m here to-” a yawn distorts his voice and he rubs his eyes with his fingertips, “Take a nap.”

He is tired, but he had to take care of Nikki first,not that Rafael and Claudia didn’t take care of their granddaughter, because they did. Every time Nicole was with his in-laws she just had the best time and now that Rafael has recovered from his heart issues, nothing was stopping him from being as playful as before.

Nicole bounces a bit on his arm, then tries to climb his shoulder to look at the door, ‘Nikki,” he tries, holding her still on him as he climbs up the stairs, “Nikki,Nicole Robin- noo.” he holds her more firmly when she tries to drag herself down using his shirt as her own personal sliding tool but Rooster prevented her from doing so.

“Aaa! Mama?”

“Mama is at the hospital.”

“Pital?” she repeats, then taps her little arm, “Ouchie?”

Jesus Christ,she is so smart. Was he smart like she was? He pauses, trying to remember if his mother ever mentioned him being like that…well,she did say once that he was already good with sports when he was one year old so…that was good,right? He was still trying to grasp that his daughter was probably a prodigy with how things are, “Mama had your siblings.” he smiles, kissing her forehead, “She’s a bit ouchie but she’ll be fine.”

Nicole blinked up at him, furrowing her little brows before looking back to the door - her pigtails moving when she did that and it was adorable - and then towards him, “No mama?”

“No mama for a little bit, she’ll be okay,baby girl.” he coos, kissing her forehead and then sighing, “Now…dada needs to sleep and so do you, so I’ll keep you in your crib,” he explains as he enters her room, pushing the door open with his elbow, “And I’ll keep an eye on you, once we are both well rested we’ll go see mama again,does that sound good?”

“Buh,” she says to him as he slowly sets her down, her little legs wriggling until she touches the mattress and Rooster kisses her forehead, “Dada.” 

“I’ll be over there,” he points to the master bedroom’s direction, “Don’t worry.” God he needed to sleep, he was seeing two Nicoles. He clears his throat, kissing her again, “Love you,birdie, see you soon.” and he turns around to leave.

Nicole stares at him, little brows scrunching as she stands to her feet on the crib and follows her father with her eyes, “Dada,” she calls again, making Rooster stop and stare back at her. She whines quietly, making grabby hands at him with her lower lip jutted out, ‘Dada!”

“...Nikki.”

More grabby hands, ‘Dada!” and a longer whine.

His heart hurt from hearing her, “Nikki, dada is going to nap-” another whine, “...and you want to stay with me.”

Rooster's heart melts at his daughter's plea, and he can't resist her adorable little whines and grabby hands. He sighs softly, shaking his head, "Okay, okay," he says, giving in to her. "Dada will take you with him for a little while, but then you have to promise to nap too, alright?"

Nicole's face lights up with a smile, and she claps her hands in excitement. "Dada!" she exclaims happily, reaching out for him.

He picks her up with a grin, cradling her in his arms as he walks back to the master bedroom. "You're getting so good at persuading me, birdie," he says, kissing the top of her head. “You are getting your mama’s charms.”

Once in the bedroom, he gently sets her down on the bed, where she sits and looks up at him with a smile. He is so tired he just kicks off his shoes and lies on the bed with one arm wrapping around Nicole, like a gate. “Sleep well,Nikki.” he murmurs, thinking she’d fall asleep any second now.

A foolish mistake.

Because Nicole crawled up to him, pressing her tiny hands on his bicep to support herself…and stayed there. Rooster’s brows furl when he feels soft breathing on top of his eyes, peeking one eye open to see a pair of light green irises staring down at him. While it was adorable, he just looked back at her, letting out a tired laugh, ‘Nikki…come on.” he says, and his daughter taps his face with her small hand, “Okay-ow.” that earns a giggle from her, ‘Okay,Nikki,baby girl,birdie, sweet girl of mine, no.” he holds her hand, kissing the palm, ‘Remember what daddy asked?”

“Woops.”

“Yeah,whoops,I know, remember we are both going to go night night?” his eyes hurt from keeping the eyelids open but Nicole is just grinning at him.

Rooster smiles despite his exhaustion, he rubs his eyes with his fingers again, then sighs through his nose."I promise, Nikki, we can play later," he says, gently tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "But right now, it's time for both of us to rest." he blinks at her when she suddenly crawls under the covers, giggling as she becomes a lump under the light colored blankets.

Damn it was cute.

But he had a long night. He chuckles tiredly, adjusting himself on the bed so he could slide his hands under the blankets and tap around until he found her…not that it was hard since he could see Nicole. She squeals, her little legs kicking as she tries to escape,but it’s obvious she can’t.

He brings her out of the covers, holding her in front of his eyes and smiling when she giggles at him, ‘Listen, here, miss menace.” he says, trying to sound stern but failing miserably due to the sheer cuteness of his daughter, "It's time for both of us to rest. No more playing, okay? We need to close our eyes and go to sleep. Can you do that for dada?"

Nicole grins at him, her little fingers reaching up to touch his face. "Dada," she repeats, her voice soft and sweet.

"That's right, dada," he says, brushing a kiss against her hand. "Now, close your eyes and let's take a little nap together. It'll be fun, I promise."

She seems to consider his words for a moment, still kicking her tiny legs and giggling at him, before tapping his nose with her finger, “Night night.”

“Hmhm,yep…please Nikki,” he begs quietly, “Dada is tired. I just need a few minutes, we can do that,right?’ his daughter blinked at him, before looking over her shoulder towards the room only to return to his face. She reaches for his neck and he brings her closer, letting out a relieved sigh when she hugs him,tucking her head under his chin and clenching his shirt.

He slowly lies back down, making sure both of his arms are wrapped around Nicole so she doesn’t roll away from him in her sleep and kisses the top of her head. “Now we sleep,okay?”

“Mkay.”

“Good.”

And amazingly, Nicole did fall asleep on his chest after that. He doesn’t remember much after it since he blacked out completely. One hand was Nicole and the other was his phone,right by the pillow - if someone called he was ready to take the call and go to Beatrice without worries.

But honestly, he was glad he was able to sleep a bit because he needed it. He had no dreams he could remember once he woke up which he was at peace with honestly.

However, his eyebrows furrowed when he heard his phone buzzing next to him. He immediately tapped his pillow until he found it, bringing it to his ear, ‘Hello?”

“Heeey,Rooster. Are you home?”

“....Javy? What are you-” he blinked his eyes open finally, seeing that Nicole was still peacefully asleep on his chest and he lowered his voice, “Yeah,I’m home…why?”

“Oh well…can you open the door?”

“...what?”

“Open the door man! We’re all out here!”

He blinks, then brings the phone screen to his eyes as if to check if he was having some sort of weird sleep deprived hallucination. He shakes his head, then looks at the screen again, “...what?”

“The door man! We’re here!’ followed by loud cheering coming from outside. Nicole’s head lifts from his chest when she hears it and he almost feels bad seeing how confused she was about the noise…maybe more than him. 

Rooster's mind is still foggy from waking up, but he quickly realizes that he's not imagining things. His friends are actually outside, and they seem to be making quite a commotion. He glances at Nicole, gently patting her back to soothe her as he continues to talk on the phone.

"Coyote, why are you all outside my house?" Rooster asks, trying to keep his voice low to avoid waking up Nicole completely.

"We got a surprise for you,man!" Javy exclaims. "Because we are great friends!"

“Uh-huh…what surprise is that?”

“One that gets you out of the house.”

Rooster's brows furrow at that sentence and he’s slowly making his way downstairs. He can finally hear Eleanor’s deep barking from the door and Nicole nuzzles his neck hoping to get more sleep, “I can’t really leave the house with Bea in the hospital.” why was he still talking on the phone when he could see everyone’s frame standing outside, it felt stupid and yet he continued.

“Then let us be your errand boys! Come on man!”

Finally he sets the phone aside, rubs his face to yank some of the sleep that still clung to it and gently moves Eleanor out of the way with his leg, ‘Ellie, back,” the white pup backs away from the door but sits not too far from him. He opens the door a little bit and he blinks confusedly once he sees that, “You are all here.”

Indeed, the whole Dagger Squad, with the exception of Jake, was there.

“Hell yeah Man!” Coyote smiles, then gasps when he sees Nikki, “Nikki!! Hi there princess!” she looks tired and buries her face into Rooster’s neck, “Aw, did we wake you up?”

“Yes.” comes Rooster’s deadpan response, “You did. We were resting a bit but…uh,what do you want to do?’

It was Payback who continued, placing his sunglasses over his forehead, “Well, we heard how you and Bea didn’t finish the twins’ nursery soooo…” he smiles, “We decided we could help you guys.”

“...I’m sorry?”

Phoenix steps closer, touching his shoulder, “Rooster, we are offering to help you build their nursery…we are all on leave and to be honest with you,” she cups the side of her face, giving him a look, “We are all eager to do something.”

Rooster blinks in surprise, his mind still trying to catch up with the fact that his friends are standing outside his house, offering to help build the twins' nursery. He looks back at Nicole, who seems to be half-awake and a little bewildered by the sudden influx of people and noise.

"You guys want to help us complete the nursery?" Rooster asks, still trying to process the situation.

"Yeah, man!" Coyote exclaims, grinning. "We know how important it is for you and Bea, and we want to make sure the twins have a perfect space to come home to."

Rooster is…shocked. He knows that building the nursery would be a significant task, and having their help would make a world of difference. He was planning on doing something while he’s at home, but being alone…wouldn’t make it go faster.

"Are you guys…serious?" 

Fanboy laughs, nodding to his pickup truck that was parked right behind everyone else’s cars, “Yeah man,even brought my truck to help you when we go to the store and such. I don’t know why you are so surprised.”

“Well…it’s a bit…unexpected.” he huffs a laugh, “But not unwelcome…I’d…really like the help, honestly.”

The members of the Dagger Squad all exchange knowing glances, and Payback smirks. "We knew you'd be surprised," he says. "That's why it's the perfect plan."

Rooster shakes his head, chuckling at their antics. "You guys are something else, you know that?" 

"We just want to be here for you, man," Coyote says, putting an arm around Rooster's shoulders. "You and Bea have always been there for us, and now it's our turn to return the favor."

Phoenix nods in agreement. "Exactly. Plus, it's a great opportunity for us to spend time together before we all go back to work."

Rooster smiles gratefully at his friends. "Thank you," he says sincerely. "I don't know how to express how much this means to me and Bea."

"You don't have to," Payback says, clapping him on the back. "We're family, and family takes care of each other."

He smiles more, stepping aside to let them in. They ask what they got and Rooster says…nothing, besides the walls Beatrice painted on. His friends, amazingly, don’t seem fazed by it…in fact they appear almost excited. He widens his eyes when Bob pulls out a notebook from his pocket and starts asking him what is missing from the nursery.

“Uhhh…” Rooster wracks his brain trying to remember, “Let’s see…We have the cribs, but they need to be built and we need mattresses and bedding," Rooster begins, ticking off the items on his fingers. "We also need a dresser for their clothes, and some storage for diapers, wipes, and other baby essentials. Oh, and we'll need a glider or a rocking chair for those late-night feedings."

Bob jots down the list in his notebook, nodding along. "Got it," he says. “Anything else?”

Rooster shrugs, moving Nicole to his other arm, “Nothing that comes to mind,no…I could check some of Bea’s lists but I think it’s uh, well hidden somewhere in her little studio room and I don’t think I’d be able to find it.”

Payback grins. "Ah,it’s fine man..but hey, you joining us,right?”

He wants to because those are his children. “...yes…but I need to let Bea and her parents know,first.” he holds out his phone, ‘Give me a second.” and he walks to the kitchen, he could still hear them talking from the living room as he walks away, bringing the phone to his ear.

Bradley taps his foot on the floor while Nicole finally wakes up,blinking around blearily while rubbing her eyes. He kisses her forehead and then immediately lifts his head once the call is answered, “Gorgeous?”

“While I love that nickname, it feels weird ‘cause you call my sister that.”

“Oh,hi Michael. Is she asleep?”

“Like a rock,man. She’s fine by the way, just had some lunch and is taking her rest. What do you need?”

“I just want to let you know I’ll be out with the guys for a bit,we are uh…going to get some things.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah,I just wanted to let you know in case she woke up,I’ll have my phone but–”

“Relax,man…go out a bit. Do…whatever it is you are planning, she’ll be okay.”

Rooster sighs in relief, thanking Michael before ending the call. He looks down at Nicole who was now fully awake and was smiling up at him. “...well,Nikki, time to buy your siblings’ things,yeah?”

REU Programs

Discrete and Continuous Analysis in Appalachia

Program Runs: June 3 - July 26

Application Deadline: March 4th

Undergraduate US citizens who expect to graduate AFTER July 26, 2024, and especially such students attending university in the Appalachian region apply for the DCAA REU. The projects center around probability and data analysis, as well as linear algebra and combinatorics. 

Participants will receive a $4,800 stipend and paid housing for 8 weeks during Summer 2024.

Participants funded by DCAA must be US Citizens or Permanent Residents of the United States. Students who are women, underrepresented minorities, first-generation college students, and those whose home institution have limited research opportunities in mathematics are encouraged to apply.

Applied Mathematics and Computational and Data Science

Hosted at University of Texas Rio Grande Valley 

Program Runs: June 13th - August 12th

Review of applications will begin on March 15, 2024 and offers will be made by April 1, but competitive late applications may be considered until April 15. 

Students will work collaboratively on group research projects in applied mathematics, mathematical modeling, and computational and data science, including applying theoretical models to physical and biological phenomena. In the application the student should choose one of the two possible research topics:

Wave Phenomena and Mathematical Modeling

Mathematical Modeling of Spatial Processes and Deep Spatial Learning

Only US citizens or permanent residents are eligible. 

Women and underrepresented groups in Mathematics are encouraged to apply!

Stipend $5400 plus $900 meal allowance and $1000 travel expenses. Housing will be provided. 

Computational Modeling Serving The Community

Program runs: June 10th - August 16th

Held Virtually in 2024

The focus of this REU is computational modeling to serve and enhance communities. Students will be involved in multi-disciplinary, community-based research projects and trained in computational thinking across different disciplines. In doing so, they will gain an understanding of the potential and limits of these tools and how they can serve diverse communities.

The activities of this virtual REU Site will involve a 2-week training followed by an 8-week research project completed under a faculty mentor’s guidance and with the involvement of a community partner.

Only US citizens or permanent residents are eligible. 

Students from institutions with limited STEM and research opportunities (such as 2-year community colleges) and tribal colleges/universities are specifically encouraged to apply.

Stipend $7000 + $1400 meal allowance and $2200 housing allowance

REU Program in Algebra and Discrete Mathematics at Auburn University

Program Dates: May 28 - July 19

Polymath Jr.

Program Runs: June 20th - August 14th

The Polymath Jr program is an online summer research program for undergraduates. The program consists of research projects from a wide variety of fields. For more information go to the website linked above.

The goal of the original polymath project is to solve problems by forming an online collaboration between many mathematicians. Each project consists of 20-30 undergraduates, a main mentor, and additional mentors (usually graduate students). This group works towards solving a research problem and writing a paper.  Each participant decides what they wish to obtain from the program, and participates accordingly. 

MathILy-EST

Program runs: June 16th - August 10th

In 2024 the MathILy-EST topic will be combinatorial geometry of origami, an area that mixes discrete mathematics, geometry, and analysis, under the direction of Dr. Thomas Hull.

MathILy-EST is an 8-week intensive summer research experience for exceptional first-year college students. MathILy-EST provides early research opportunities each year for nine college students who are deeply but informally prepared for mathematics research. The focus of the program is on first-year students, with second-year and entering college students also considered for participation.

warioware styled text gifs tutorial

making this cuz someone on art fight asked me how i made these. feel free to ignore

STEP 1

download a font. the one i used was WarioWare Original !

STEP 2

its not required but its highly recommended you get Aseprite if you dont have it already! its a powerful tool for sprite animation. if you dont have the money for it though you can always use browser based sprite animation tools like Piskel ! you can also use regular art software and export the frames separately if you wish.

STEP 3

in whatever program youre using type out what word(s) you want your gif to have! the text size for the crispiest pixels is 15. once its typed out space each letter apart so that theres 2 pixels of empty space between each letter, like so:

after spacing them out, add the outline. warioware used sharp edged outlines, so dont leave out the corners!

STEP 5

now we'll apply the shading to the bottom of the letters. i dont have the exact colors but the ones i used are #dbdbdb (219, 219, 219) and #bfbfbf (191, 191, 191). these colors can also be changed if youd rather use a red or something, but keep in mind theyre very light colors. examples of this can be seen in my art fight global character perms!

STEP 6

this next part isnt required but unless you like redrawing the same pixels over and over then go ahead and move every other letter to a second layer! this is because during the animation, the letter's outlines will overlap each other so its best to make another layer so you wont have to redraw them

STEP 7

here's where we begin animating! the animation starts with the first letter moving up and the rest of the letters following suit, one after the other. this animation is 5 frames long so it wont be terribly long of a process. on the first frame move your first letter up by one pixel:

leading off from the previous frame, for the 2ND FRAME move it one pixel to the left. after that, for the 3RD FRAME, move it down two pixels. for the 4TH FRAME, move it one pixel to the right. lastly, for the 5TH FRAME, its position will remain unchanged from where it started, as seen in the 3rd image in this tutorial.

STEP 9

now, do the same thing to all the other letters, but remember to keep their movements one frame off from the previous letter (i.e. if the first letter moves up on the first frame, then the second letter moves up on the second frame, and then the third letter will move up on the third frame, and so on). if done correctly it will look like this:

the finishing touches! the speed i use for these animations is 50ms/frame or 20fps. to make these gifs larger without them looking like complete ass i upscale them using the "nearest neighbor" method. its best enlarge by values of 100 (200%, 300%, etc.)

here's what the final gif should look like if everything was done correctly, but youre free to change anything about this too. this is just a guide on how i personally make these gifs. if youre wanting to make shaky text like in WarioWare, inc. and WarioWare: Twisted!, its not really something i can describe well enough to make a post about. my best advice would be to use VisualBoy Advance, open a Mega Microgame$! ROM, and use the next frame tool to look at how each letter shakes individually. anyway thats all! hope youll find this useful!

Dreams and Daemons

Chapter 3: Franky, Brook Fandom: One Piece Summary: Introduction of Harley and Alma. Words: 1 191 Prologue - Chapter 1 - Chapter 2 - Chapter 3 - Chapter 4

Franky - HARLEY, Texas Longhorn

“Fertility, masculinity, strength. With a fiery temperament and no lack of brute strength, the bull is a very strong symbol of masculine power. It is often associated with the sun, but also with the moon and the skies. It is also a symbol of justice and order.”         - “Dæmons Unveiled: Navigating the Bonds of this World”, Filipe Haulman

Franky’s daemon, Harley, loved to transform into ferocious animals that looked impressing, causing people to think twice before they tried to do something to them. Franky delighted in it and constantly challenged Harley to change into new, stronger animals that he could create new weapons to, making him into a super cyborg daemon. Designing new weapons that made Harley stronger than any other daemon they met was exhilarating; he looked super cool! Regardless of who you were, you were bound to hesitate when you saw a rhinoceros with cannons mounted on each shoulder. It didn’t matter that Iceburg was speaking to them like they were fools for thinking so, Franky thought he was probably just jealous as his daemon was a stupid little mouse. She couldn’t even carry a little laser, Franky thought, although now when he was thinking of it, that would be pretty super that too… But his Harley was undeniably the coolest. However, when the marines came to take Tom-san away, no shape mattered anymore. Even a rhinoceros with cannons was powerless before the World Government. That fateful day, Franky stood on the rails in front of the train carrying their creator to his death. Beside him stood Harley, tears welling in his eyes as he changed into a bull with long horns for the first time. The perfect form, if any, to stop an oncoming train. Together, they would surely stop the train. No matter what. They wouldn’t let them take Tom-san away. Franky’s body broke and Harley’s body shattered into golden dust. Franky had probably never been closer to death than that day. Harley returned to him as the bull again, and after a few initial days of silence when Franky was too busy struggling to survive, he could finally focus on his daemon again. “That thing?” Franky spoke for the first time, prompting Harley to perk up from where he lay patiently while Franky worked. “Mm”, Harley hummed, looking over his unscathed body. “Seems like it.” Initially, it felt like a bitter reminder of their failure that day. But Franky soon discovered how practical it was with a long hanger attached to his daemon, no need to put down any tools, and Harley was still strong with a couple of sharp tips. Even if he would totally look more super with a couple of cannons mounted on him. Brook - ALMA, Dog, Austrian Black and Tan Hound

“Ooowoooowoooo..!” Nami, Usopp and Chopper had been quaking in their boots from the sound. An eerie wail emanated from the ghostly ruined ship in front of them, sounding like the lament of a spirit crying for an impossible redemption amidst the dark fog. It felt straight out of a horror story. Nami really, really didn’t want to climb up the rope. Screw the lottery; she wanted to stay alive, damn it! She lamented while crying in the little boat they had used to approach the ship. Damn that captain who had been shivering in excitement since they first saw the ship. Surely Sanji was enough? The spine-chilling howling echoed again, and Nami barely kept herself from yelping. Then, something white suddenly began to shift through the wood of the ship in front of her. She felt her face pale as she watched a freaking transparent head of something slowly revealing itself, until she saw two black holes emerging from the rotting wood of the ship. Staring straight at her. No. No, no, no, no, nonononono! She shrieked in horror as she climbed up to Luffy and Sanji in record time. She didn’t even complain when Sanji got all lovey-dovey when she jumped into his arms. Let him die first; she didn’t care. It all got worse from there. The damn skeleton showed up—an impossibly moving skeleton, mind you, that asked to see her panties. She was so done. But then, through the rotten wooden floor, a freaking ghost appeared! She knew it was the thing she had seen earlier, no mistaking those dark holes for eyes. But now she could see it was a dog. All white and slightly see-through, like a freaking ghost (it couldn’t be repeated enough times). Oh, and it slightly hovered above the wooden floor; did she mention that part? Like. A. Freaking. Ghost. Luffy was ecstatic. That idiot. She wanted to kill him when he asked them to join his crew before she or Sanji knew what was going to happen. And the skeleton said yes! The ghost dog next to him wagged its tail happily. She could feel her soul leave her body. --- Brook was ecstatic, he had met people! People! They weren’t hallucinations but had invited him over to their ship. He hadn’t been on another ship in fifty years, so he knew that it wasn’t something he was imagining. Alma was just as excited as he was. She was leaping and running around in the kitchen with her tongue hanging out of her mouth. She showed no care that half of the time she was running through some of the people in the room who shouted and yelped in shock from the chilly feeling whenever she did so. The other daemons in the room clearly didn’t know how to react when the strange daemon jumped up to them and licked them. But they couldn’t feel the tongue; instead, it disappeared into their body with a chill. The tiger daemon had tried to swipe after her, but to her clear bewilderment, her paw just swept through the transparent body in front of her. Brook soon explained to them what had happened to him. That he had eaten a devil fruit and when he died, he returned as a spirit. “Ah, and I had Alma by my side!” he said happily, looking to Alma who stopped in the middle of her lap around the table and beamed up to him as well. “Well, she was a spirit as well. We searched for my body and when we found it, it was already a skeleton. But I was able to return to my body, and Alma stayed by my side!” Alma flew up into the air with a happy woof. Brook introduced himself as Dead Bones Brook and Alma joined in happily – “And I’m Phantom Alma!” The new people they met stared at them in bewilderment, while the captain’s smile somehow widened even more.

I had a hard time to choose between two names for Franky's daemon, and in the last moment before uploading this chapter I changed it into Harley. I wanted a typical american name for him and with Franky's bike Harley felt like a very fitting name. A rhino could've been a very fitting animal for him but I had an image of a Texas Longhorn for him for a long time, and it feels like a more humble animal for him fitting for the lesson he learned after Tom. Instead of a horn for attacking enemies, he got an animal with horns also made for taking attacks. Dear Brook and Alma.. At first I was searching for an austrian animal for him but soon it came to me that I didn't have a dog yet and it feels very fitting for him. And so I found the breed of Austrian Black and Tan hound. For a long time I imagined Alma as a skeleton as well, but one day it hit me that she would be perfect as a spirit like Brook is when he can let his soul out of his body. Somehow she didn't turn into a normal deamon again after Brook's first death, nobody is really sure what she is now, but on the other hand nobody is sure if this have ever happened before. I wanted to give an image of both before and after Brook's first death so you get two different images of them both here. As a bonus, the name, Alma, coincides with the Spanish word meaning "the soul". If you're wondering about Jimbei, fishmen and mermen are different from humans in that they don't have daemons. For humans it was just another way that they were different from humans and made them more similar to animals. But to fish-/mermen it is said that their whole souls are inside of them and around them in the sea, they are never separated. While humans are the strange exception in the world who are so separated in their souls that they're splitted, always searching for fulfillment.

Backstory: Unlike the other three Ghostbusters, Winston Zeddemore was not originally a university professor. Winston applied for a job opening late in 1984 after business started to pick up. Janine Melnitz interviewed Winston from her desk. She asked him if he believed in UFOs, astral projections, mental telepathy, ESP, clairvoyance, spirit photography, telekinetic movement, full trans-mediums, the Loch Ness monster and the theory of Atlantis. Winston replied if there was a steady paycheque in it, he would believe anything she said. The interview was interrupted when the phone rang and by the return of the weary Peter Venkman and Raymond Stantz. Winston turned his head and observed them while Janine spoke to the caller. Raymond was not pleased to see two free repeaters on the evening worksheet. He walked to the basement Janine brought Winston to their attention. She introduced him. Winston stood. Raymond stopped and turned around. Raymond took one look at him and hired him on the spot.

This is very much an anti-"Vote blue no matter who!" moment. Call your representatives. Tell them you will *not* be voting for them if they don't vote on this bill. Say you won't vote for Biden. NOT VOTING is also a tool in the box of electoralism - if the democrats face no pressure from the left to not do evil genocide then, then they will keep doing evil genocide shit.

Call and absolutely say all of that, and make clear demands for what they should be doing. I’ve been calling almost every single evening.

Recognize there ARE people like Tlaib, Omar, Ocasiao-Cortez, Bush, Bowman, Ramirez, Lee, Green, Carson, Jayapal, etc. running for these offices, House and Senate alike. Find the ones near you and support them if you’re dead set against voting for these current faces. Fight like hell to have them win.

Campaign for Dean Phillips if you’re dead set against Biden—I fully plan to vote for him in the primary myself if the field stays as-is. He’s currently saying he supports Israel’s right to self defense, but also saying he believes Palestinians should have self-determination and specifically wanting to help create a Palestinian state is a hell of a lot easier to push toward their desired unified, single, apartheid-free state than whatever secretive, genocide-abetting garbage we’re dealing with right now.

I’m still recovering from my third spinal surgery and have physical therapy looming again once I’m no longer on narcotics and able to drive myself to bi-weekly appointments, but I already make donations to my candidate of choice for my representative on top of my 2 state-level people, and I actually reached out and we’ve spoken directly before.

You think a Republican would have any qualms about aiding Israel? The vote for cutting IRS funding to give to Israel? 12 Democrats voted for it. 2 Republicans against it.

11 Republican members sponsored a bill to expel all Palestinians in the US. Landsman (OH) is a pro-Israel Democrat, was even one of the 22 who voted to censure Tlaib, yet he’s drafting his own bill against Zinke, the leader on the expulsion bill.

Breaking tonight, the Republicans have now proposed a bill to revoke scholarship money from college students speaking in defense or favor for Palestine.

That pressure from the left? That pressure is voting for progressive voices, donating and campaigning for them. That pressure is voicing your own opinions to those representing you, regularly.

Not voting at all? Considering that your way to send a message? All you’ve done is take your hand off the wheel and let all the pressure from the right take over the whole car.

1) How long until Dabi almost kills Endeavor and AFO starts calling Hawks "the New No.1" and that it seems to be a curse for the No.1 to fall one after the other in a big way to their own sins? 2) How long until AFO coughs up more HPSC comments besides calling Hawks "Mr. Replacement." (Which is super creepy, did he always know about the HPSC or was he listening in on when Hawks called himself that and this was meant to be a quote and not a fact? He seems to buy into the lie the HPSC told about Nagant killing a hero, but when she explodes it's like he knew what she really was, "a tool." And to this day I can't tell if "heroes employed under the HPSC" is a common known fact. Deku recognizes her as such, but he could've heard from Hawks, who for all that he keeps his backstory hidden away, saying "this lady is trained by the HPSC and also my Senpai" is super telling, but just like at his mom's house where he says "I'm free of my shackles because those guys are gone" everyone is too disturbingly chill about one of their co-workers feeling imprisoned by the guys that sign their paychecks.

(Somewhere in the 40s, I think Ch 47 that says their hero work is based on commission and how much pay they get is based on reports they write on how helpful they were, so I'm pretty sure the HPSC reads that to pay em.) And the HPSC building is a direct copy-cat of the "National Public Safety Commission" drawn the same as the irl one in any of Hawks' flashbacks to them. But not every single one matches, I imagine they have several branches that handle different work and buildings. In 191 what we thought was him standing outside the hospital actually matched the HPSC building drawn in Heroes Rising, maybe the real reason Hawks looked so worn down and like he was crying was because they chewed him out over "how come Dabi tricked you like this, you're all out of feathers, did you lie about the attack to us, does he suspect you, are you compromised, didn't we tell you it's okay to allow civilian casualties, you could've risked the whole mission, no wonder Dabi doesn't trust you, don't mess up the next task he gives you, etc."

(Read: Literally DEMANDED casualties, "you can and you will." Lmao if he went public with this, y'all be getting some heat.) Also with Hawks being a canon workaholic, no way the HPSC was all "sure you fucked up your chance to get Dabi's trust and now you're a grounded bird so you can relax the next 3 days" he might've told that to Endeavor about taking it easy but he was 100% still working. I bet it's a common misconception in hero society that Hawks' quirk is a free ticket to getting days off, but in reality he both never does and doesn't have a place to relax if he doesn't feel safe trying to get to his secret home if the HPSC is stalking him more when he's wingless. I also hope that place has stairs tho in case he does wanna go back but if it's only flight-accessible, rip. Actually now that I think about it, when he's wingless is probs when he uses the place HPSC gave him so they feel secure about where he is. 3) How long into AFO rewinds himself into a child so Hawks can punt him into the sun? Or maybe he magically stops rewinding in his 20s so we can write meet-cutes or "the demon lord is my age and now I have to supervise him as my roommate" fics? Alternatively, I'm still willing to accept AFO seeing the way he raised Shigaraki in how the HPSC raised Hawks and pointing that out to him.

1) Dabi will attempt to kill Enji when the asshole finally hugs him. Nothing like realizing the most precious thing on the battlefield that you want to destroy to hurt your dad is actually you. I mean he's already suicidal, I'm sure the realization Daddy loves him but sucked too much at being a dad to tell him, causing all this fuckery, is just a "okay I've had enough of this fucking family" moment.

2) I don't know how much AFO knows. It's weird, as you said. I can't imagine he doesn't know what the government is doing. And this is one of the most annoying things about lore. We know the HPSC regulates the heroes, decides their pay. But whatever Nagant and Hawks are under is a different thing. And in some ways, people are aware that Nagant was a HPSC hero? I wonder if it's just a thing of like her debuting as being sponsored by the HPSC itself. Like all the other heroes tend to get a leg up from their schools but Nagant's debut was seen as a thing of, "We want to introduce a hero we have scouted on our own and who will represent the ideal HPSC hero".

Actually the idea that he was upset because the commission chewed him out is likely. I think if there is a difference between Nagant and Hawks is that the killing of civilians, at least, was not something Hawks had to do. Being told to go against all his instincts in saving people (and desires. Remember at his core he wants to save people)....

I do think Hawks going public wouldn't do much good. The HPSC is in shambles. Mera might deny any knowledge, because he probably didn't know. If Hawks did it before the fight, it might have collapsed society further but bringing up all the shit he's done post-war will be seen as making trouble. The reaction might be like the one to Dabi, where a lot of people just wish the victim kept that shit to themselves.

But yeah, I think Hawks never like.....has a vacation. Even if his wings are down, he can use very small feathers to hear things so I think his "downtime" is when he's the most effective for more information -gathering missions.

3) AFO pointing out Hawks is a grooming victim would be amazing in the way he was insulting Enji for fucking up his kids. Look in the mirror, man.

The 151 set released on Pokemon TCG Live, and I spent most of the in-game currency I've acquired thus far building a Nidoking/Nidoqueen deck. The results thus far: if it pops off, it pops off hard, but I need to keep hammering at the deck list to make it more consistent. This is personally incredible, because this is the first time I've built a deck from scratch and had a fun time doing it; deck building has always been one of my least favorite parts of TCGs.

More details below the break to allow people to opt out of Pokemon TCG minutia.

I originally was using Mr. Mime as a staller/filler basic, but unfortunately, Mimic Barrier isn't as effective in practice as it is on paper, and considering how fucking fast this game is, stalling to draw once per turn doesn't seem viable. Instead, I swapped to Kangaskhan EX, because 240 HP makes for a pretty solid wall early game, and it only takes one energy to use it's draw three attack. You risk giving up two prizes, but being able to draw three consistently is huge.

I ultimately went with Radiant Greninja instead of Radiant Sneasler. Sneasler's ability would actually be better than what I thought, because Nidoking's poison applies on turn pass, meaning it would effectively be doing 220 damage before the opponent gets to act. But I don't think I can sacrifice the consistency Greninja brings to mess around with that.

I also swapped out Professor's Research with Cynthia's Ambition (draw up to 5 cards in hand/8 if one of your pokemon was KO'd last turn), because I have no way to recover discarded Rare Candy, and I had to discard a lot of Rare Candy to use Professor's Research.

The other main supporters are Arven and Miriam. I'm not crazy about Arven, but he's the best general item search I've been able to identify for this deck, and using him did lead me to include the tools Pot Helmet (flat -30 damage, which has helped Nidoking survive a stunning number of times) and Big Air Balloon (for when I have to put Nidoqueen in the active spot and need to get her the fuck outta there and don't have three energy handy... although maybe I could just use Switch instead). Miriam is also critically important late game utility that prevents me from decking out and gives me more chances to swing in with Nidokings, especially once my hand is loaded.

That being said, Nidoqueen's Queen Press (will not take damage from any Basic Pokemon until next turn) has some really funny utility against Chien-Pao decks. I just haven't been able to execute with that yet.

287)  Why doesn’t Shikamaru, who is Chöji’s best friend, not use his knowledge about how Chöji feels when someone calls him “fatso” to his advantage? (x). It’s true that he doesn’t know how the Sound Four interact, but considering the negative notion that the word carries (and that he’s aware of), it’s strange.

It seems that none of the sound four are sensors, as they don’t notice Jiroubou’s chakra change (Shikamaru’s), either that or Shikamaru’s Henge is perfect.

It’s just by incredible luck that Kidomaru decided not to kill Shikamaru (x), Naruto (x), or Kiba (x) after Shikamaru’s “plan” is set to motion. Who in their right mind risks the whole group to attack head-on a single member they know one simple technique of? Even Neji gets trapped and Shikamaru truly thinks that his strategy truly is “this much planning”, huh?

Naruto’s doppelganger strategy was Naruto’s idea -not Shikamaru’s.

290) Did I analyze the entire Neji vs. Kidomaru fight? Yes. And here it is.

291) Chapter 198 is the chapter where Neji canonically (and finally) lets go of his hatred towards the Hyuga Main Family (x), he even states that Naruto “saved him from darkness” (x) -which is not only letting go of a negative feeling such as ire but also transforms him into an obedient tool of both his uncle and his cousins. Here, Neji’s Arc comes resolutely to an end, narratively positive, revolutionarily negative.

It’s the feather supposed to symbolize Neji’s wings? As in, him becoming free of “his cage”; or is a single feather a symbol of him plucking his wings -therefore, becoming trapped inside the cage?

292) Kimimaro has the Earth Cursed Mark whilst Sasuke has the Heaven Cursed Mark -did the sound four have none of these? There's no mention in the Databooks about which Seal they've got. It could be that the drawings they get when they activate the seal are a clue about the nature of their mark.

The Cursed Seal of Heaven appears in the strongest of those attuned to spiritual energy. The Cursed Seal of Earth appears in the strongest of those attuned to physical energy.

293) Orochimaru’s new vessel. I can’t find colored pages of this chapter, but doesn’t he look like that kid of his in Boruto? Also, because Orochimaru transferred himself onto another body, he isn’t able to transfer again until some years passed -hence why he decides to prepare Sasuke’s body.

294) Orochimaru kidnaps his vessel's clan and his only wish before being "consumed" is to ask for their freedom.

Genyumaru became the winner of the pit grotesque battle among the pit’s prisoners to pick the new “container”, Orochimaru’s “emergency host”. His high combat skills led to him having his body consumed by Orochimaru. Now, only remnants of his consciousness remain inside this body. Genyumaru emerges victorious by surviving the violent battles, but loses the will to fight upon facing Orochimaru. Wishing only for the freedom of his family, he surrenders his body.
