The Ministry for the Future - Kim Stanley Robinson
This recommendation has fundamentally changed the trajectory of my year. And possibly the next decade for me. I knew about the challenge facing us with climate change, I was well aware and delved into the movement in 2008 after Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth came out. Back then, I was actually a youth. One of the generations that would be directly affected by the impending climate disaster. I was energised and optimistic, but with only dead ends at a higher policy level, my steam soon ran out.
I avoided the resurgence in eco activism/awareness in the last few years. I saw headlines counselling the new ‘eco-anxiety’ that has come about from leaning too far into the science and politics of Climate Change. Why would I give myself more anxiety about something that I can’t fundamentally change, as an individual or even through an activist group? Isn’t that what the world doesn’t need - another privileged white woman buying activewear from recycled plastics and blaring on about beeswax wraps?
In this frame of mind, and also in an anti-sci-fi context, I came to The Ministry for the Future. The first chapter about the Indian Heatwave seemed like an interesting and plausible inclusion. It’s likely that the hottest places will keep getting hotter. These are countries closest to the equator. These are largely developing nations of black and brown people. Then the ‘Ministry for the Future’ is set out by the 2025 Paris Accord. Yes, also something that would come out of the UN. Unlikely to drive real change. Something else that Greta Thunberg to scold as well intentioned yet lacking real change.
The 7 or 9 (I returned the library book and can’t remember specifics now) areas within the department were fascinating. Each represented a key threat to the climate, and Robinson took us on a journey to explore the solutions that were mostly all existing ideas that were implemented as intended. I didn’t think glaciology would interest me as much as it did when reading those passages. The bit that was the turning point for me (and it seemed like the future world) was Saudi Arabia’s coup. (Spoiler alert coming). It seems like such a simple chain of events…. Saudi Arabia as a nation fails. New government keeps oil in the ground. Becomes rich from carbon coins. Oil prices skyrocket worldwide. Renewables and EVs suddenly become ridiculously affordable. Power grids worldwide are transformed.
To get the world’s grids to renewables that quickly is a huge idea. It could really transform the future of the planet. Don’t ask me how much, I’m not a scientist, but if anything these ideas and happenings in the projected future of the book make it clear that real change comes at a policy level. We need our lawmakers to start listening and doing better.
I didn’t really care for Mary and Vadim’s story arcs at all. I wasn’t in the book for great literary characters and didn’t want half baked ones. Mary lacked depth, and so did everyone around her.
I’ve recommended this book to everyone that will listen since. I’ve also listened to a few podcasts with Robinson, and added his other books to my reading list (though I won’t read too quickly, as I don’t want to get KSR-fatigue!). I also added a slew of other climate and environment related books to my list, as now it’s important to me, I need to read up and across the topic to understand as much as I can. I don’t consider myself an environmentalist, but it’s becoming clear that issues are intersectional. Helping the environment helps everyone.

How To Save a Planet podcast from Gimlet Media is one that I've heard about for awhile but never tried. Now I'm hooked. Alex Blumberg and Ayana Johnson are fantastic hosts and do a really good job.
Dense Discovery is a weekly newsletter that I've been subscribed to for some time that has great sustainability info.
Project Wren allows you to calculate your carbon footprint and offset in one go or in a monthly subscription. I'm now aware that there are many services that offer this, this is just one.
Anything David Attenborough is a good companion piece when learning about the environment.
Seaspiracy on Netflix has a bit of a vegan propaganda vibe to it, but worthwhile and makes me reflect on my power as a consumer to purchase sustainable (?) fish.

TWO DEGREES OF TRANSFORMATION: A STEP TOWARDS DECARBONIZING THE WORLD
I grew up in Worli, a residential neighbourhood of South Mumbai, India. The park in which my friends and I used to play, is now a parking lot. Across the street, the neighbourhood is a maze of tightly built mud and concrete houses. Given the population density, it is hard to find space and set up a new electricity pole. In India, we are used to densely populated areas. We brush aside inconveniences and get by with phrases like “Kindly adjust.” With those two words, we make space, we co-exist, and we get by.

In India and other parts of Asia, Africa and Latin America, we have been ‘kindly adjusting’ with our lives, especially the way in which millions still access and consume electricity. However, despite the existing challenges, the Government of India has made great strides in connecting all households to the grid. Still, reliable power supply 24×7 continues to remain a challenge and thousands of households are having to invest in power back-up options. Interestingly the irony remains that India is not a power deficient nation. We generate far more than what we can use. Current challenge is to make reliable power reach to those who need it and when they need it. And it’s not just India alone but many other countries who are blessed with energy sources but have neither the resources nor the technical know-how to harness and distribute it.
We are amid a global energy transition
More than $2.5 trillion have been invested in renewable energy since 2009. Solar capacity has grown from 25GW in 2010 to 663GW today. In India, the current government has set ambitious growth targets for renewable energy – 175GW by 2022 and 450GW by 2030. So, while this augurs well for transition to a cleaner energy future and building energy inclusivity, what’s the problem? The challenge is two-fold.
The pace of energy transition is not fast enough
A report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, published in October 2018 struck a grim note: we had only 12 years to respond to the climate crisis before passing the point of no return. This is after 6 years of global consensus building between the UN Climate Conference in Denmark in 2009 and the Paris Agreement in 2016 signed by countries to keep global temperature increase “well below’ 2 degrees Celsius and to “endeavour to limit them to 1.5degrees Celsius.” However, scientific evidence shows that far from declining, world emissions continue to grow. According to Global Carbon Project, world-wide fossil fuel emissions are expected to be up by 0.6% in 2019 over 2018. We are simply not doing enough and fast enough.

Infrastructure readiness for supporting the energy transition
The second part of the challenge is that our infrastructure readiness to keep pace with the speed of the current energy transition to renewables is not adequate. As governments, especially in developing nations, go about reforms to alleviate poverty, and provide quality and reliable electricity to almost 2 billion unreached population, we are going to witness a hockey-stick pattern of growth. For example, currently the per capita power consumption in India is 1189 units as against a global average of 3600 units. Generation is no longer a problem as we are a power surplus nation. We now need to focus on reliable transportation of power. This a critical element and must be addressed through proactive planning and rapid deployment. However, transportation and delivery of power face the following challenges:
Matching the pace of renewable energy deployment
Renewable energy infrastructure assignments are commissioned at almost a fifth of the time of traditional thermal energy infrastructure. Transmission infrastructure deployment will need to match that pace to ensure timely energy delivery.
Increased urbanisation and lack of space
Much like the slums of Mumbai, rapid urbanisation and increased population density will make it harder to find large, open spaces for transmission infrastructure to be deployed. Instead, the transmission capacity of the existing infrastructure will need to be upgraded manifold.
Financial capacity for capital-intensive investments
India alone needs an investment of US$60-80bn in the next five years to address the growing demand for power. Traditional forms of capital and relying solely on government funding will not be adequate. Instead, we will see the emergence of new forms of capital through Investment Trusts or Yield Cos and other forms of collaborative funding.

What can help
Here are the key factors for the world to successfully address the transportation and delivery of energy services for an additional 2 billion people while keeping temperature rise within 2 degrees centigrade:
Stepping up renewable integration into the Grid
According to the International Energy Agency, wind and solar energy in many countries are now competitive with or even cheaper than fossil fuel-based electricity. While there is greater emphasis on renewables, it should be kept in mind that they are highly intermittent in nature. Large-scale integration of renewables into the electricity grid may lead to voltage and frequency instability. This can be addressed by a combination of increased transmission, grid scale storage and gas-fired power plants to act as natural balancer for renewables.
Embracing disruptive technologies in transmission and distribution
One of the biggest challenges facing the power sector is constructing transmission lines on time. Whether its deployment of heli–cranes to reach sites where transmission infrastructure is hard to build or use of satellite based technologies for topographic mapping, use of drones and robotics for wire stringing and monitoring, today’s developers have access to technology which can solve the challenges of space and time.
In the era of distributed generation, communities and households could use Blockchain and IoT- enabled smart meters to reduce their electricity bills and consume electricity locally. For example, on a sunny afternoon a rooftop solar PV system may produce more electricity than the household consumes. If connected to the main grid, the producer can sell excess electricity to earn credits which can be adjusted against the billing cycle. On the distribution side, I envision a free market where consumers can choose their energy supplier from their phones, based on factors like source of power, convenience, service and pricing – and similar to what aggregators have managed for food and mobility.
Regional collaboration in power sharing
The intermittency of renewable energy generation is one of the biggest challenges preventing nations from fully harnessing its potential. Countries located between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn receive an abundance of sunshine. This can power multiple economies if captured and used optimally leveraging the time zone difference between various countries. We must take advantage of our regional strength with neighbours and make the Intercontinental Grid a reality. If the International Solar Alliance is the OPEC of the future, one must work towards ‘One Sun, One World, One Grid’ – after all, what good is it to have excess sunlight if we can’t share it’s benefits with our neighbours? This will not only boost economic trade but also help deliver services, grow economies, create jobs and keep the lights on.
Today, there is greater public awareness than ever before about the irreversible damages of climate change. People are making conscious choices about how their homes will be lit and what powers their car. Universal focus has shifted to clean energy. The young are taking the lead, and the old world will be forced to listen, sooner or later.

Ever since I began writing this article, the song spinning through my head is Lana Del Ray’s ‘I got that summertime, summertime sadness
Su-su-summertime, summertime sadness’ (of course I have a melodious husky voice in my head) but this choice of song could purely be because it has been summertime in Cancun, Mexico for almost 2 months and there is no escaping the brutal heat. With climate change and quarantining as it is, using the air conditioner feels like a guilty pleasure. That is exactly why I put together this collection of product designs that will help you have a cool, eco-friendly summer this year without sky-rocketing your electricity bills!

To help maintain the electricity usage, designers Aileen Ooi and E Ian Siew created an attachment to the common standing fan everyone has stashed away at their homes to make the room cooler. The Lilypad is a luxury villa designed by Chuck Anderson and is anchored just north of Sydney’s Palm Beach. Anderson is a boat enthusiast so it is no surprise that he created a floating house! This beautiful Airbnb is also eco-conscious, it is completely solar-powered and is slowly helping us pivot towards sustainable travel. The exterior of the house is made from timber and includes an open living area, a wine cellar, a sleeping loft and, of course, a bathroom (for all that wine that we will consume post quarantine on our holiday!). To feel fancy, you have an al fresco dining (means you can eat your food while enjoying the breeze and sun when going outside is cool again) and sunbathing area on the lower level which also boasts of an expansive terrace.
The Four Seasons shakers by Qualy Design are quite literally perfection. You’ve got four shakers that embody four different seasons and hold four different seasonings. Designed for salt, pepper, dried herbs, and chili flakes, the shakers come with plants on the inside that pair well with the seasoning. The pepper shaker comes with a cactus inside, turning the shaker into a summer scene (make sure you use white pepper for proper effect!)

Its summertime, and though we want to go and park ourself on the beaches, COVID-19 is still going strong and until we have a solution for this illness, social distancing and taking other preventive measures is all we can do. So stay home and stay safe!

2019 ended with a global average temperature of 1.1°C above estimated pre-industrial levels
under the 2015 Paris Agreement, every country in the world agreed to keep global temperatures well below 2 degrees celsius, otherwise we would risk natural tipping points that would surpass CO2 levels and global temperatures uncontrollably higher

the IPCC’s report lays out various pathways to stabilise global warming at 1.5degrees. these solutions all require unprecedented efforts to cut fossil-fuel use in half in less than 15 years and eliminate their use almost entirely in 30 years. this means no home, business or industry heated by gas or oil; no vehicles powered by diesel or gasoline; all coal and gas power plants to be shut
in addition to this, up to 3.86 million square miles (10 million square kilometres) of forests to be added by 2050. every pound of carbon dioxide emitted in the last hundred years will continue to trap heat in the atmosphere for hundreds of years to come. by 2045 or 2050 there will still be too much CO2 in the atmosphere. more forests will be essential to stabilise global temperatures at 1.5degrees

when the wood from mature forests is converted into furniture or buildings CO2 can be stored for the long term. the world’s forests contain more carbon than exploitable oil, gas, and coal deposits. “our planet’s future climate is inextricably tied to the future of its forests”

I’m immensely frustrated - I have this fantastic photo of a sculpture on the prom at home, right, but it’s slightly crooked. It needs rotating about 1.5degrees counterclockwise. But every time I do, because the sunlight did a really cool weird gradient thing that is WHY the thing is so beautiful in the first place, the whole thing fucks up in the saving leaving me with a weird crisscross pattern in the foreground. I hate it.
