projection 01
this shows the projection of my content on the wall, in motion. i would prefer to have connected the audio to an external speaker source rather than the projector itself, but i couldn’t work out how to do this. i feel it would have a better impact if the audio source was a little more advanced

projection 01
this shows the elements of the video, the technological data particles that create me in the digital world, projected upon my skin. this is an interesting contrast of how my data can be represented in the physical world, upon the being that it attempts to re-create. the patterns have a really interesting effect, something i would like to experiment with more

projection attempt 01
here i have began experimenting with projection by using the wall as the background upon which the video is shown. the details and pixel elements of the video are really enhanced by the projector, giving an interesting effect to the aesthetic and appearance of the project. the textures and digital markings work really well here. I would like to go on to experiment with different materials and the effect this can additionally have on the showcasing of the work, including the pattern the materials are situated in
it is important here, to look at the display and technique in showcasing this project, as i want it to link with the content and concept. for example, using digital means of displaying it, yet i would like to attempt to use somewhat more advanced technology. projecting really sits well with the content, so trying projection mapping and more advanced means to document the installation would compliment the project

technological landscapes vid
here i have attempted to combine all of the footage into a visually imposing and stimulating short vid. i have aimed for it to contain an eery essence which i have now attempted to enhance through the audio. adding experimental music by OAKE - sehtohree diin chromtas vehn. adding glitches and digital sounds to enhance the video whilst adding elements into the video to line up with the audio. i aim to project the video onto surfaces, which is the next step in my experimentation

Projection Mapping e.g.
by pushan panda
- decided to use translucent sheets of plastic, allowing light to glow through them. it came in a long roll
- cut into panel lengths, cutting the sheets and ordering them, bought the roll based on the required width of the material
- prepared two pieces of wood per sheet
- used fishing line to hold them up, attaching them to the ceiling frame and then attaching them to the floor so they don’t fly around
- used two projectors, focusing on angles and content, you want to make sure the projection hits everything you want to show it on

ilan katin, counter.repetition
‘counter.repetition is a video and sound sculpture consisting of two projectors and 24 transparent screens. the screens were positioned so as to create a diamond like shape when viewed from the side and the illusion of a tunnel of light when viewed from the ends, each instance of the image getting progressively larger. sound was limited so as to allow for moments where the projection would 'breath' on its own’
the lay out of the screens is interesting and gives me a glimpse into effective material to use in terms of projection, and ways to explore with the layout of said screens

installation plan
here, i have a draft plan for the installation i have in mind at this point in the project. as you walk in the door, you instantly see the projection of a ‘technological landscape’ (one of the zoomed network images from my 3d scan) projected onto a sheer fabric hanging from the ceiling. next situated further back and to the left, will be another projection of this personal digital network on the same fabric. this is the same again to the right hand-side. the exact content would need to be experimented with as i would need to decide between having a moving image of these networks or a still one. the idea of the viewer having to move through the fabric would cause the fabric to move, creating the illusion of a moving network. this is something i need to experiment with by using projectors and fabric to see which works best. i personally love the still images, i feel they are abstract and effective however it would be interesting for them to move. it’s a shame that the moving videos are harder to film due it being difficult to make the movements smooth. certain moves aren’t available without the mouse being in shot, and some of those are a lot more effective than the ones where the mouse is invisible
something else that needs to be experimented with, is the type of fabric that i would use to hang from the ceiling and project onto. i would prefer the fabric to be sheer, and have an interesting slightly netted texture to add to the network effect. however, i don’t want it to spill too much light onto the projection behind, this is mostly the case for the right-hand side. again, something that i would need to experiment with and test. you can see the projectors dotted around and the positions i feel they would potentially be best in
within the installation, i have designed it so you walk through a digital network, as if you’re going through this technological realm, inside a huge computer network. as though you are inside the machine. the very machine that controls you. you are accessing secretive spaces that it wasn’t intended for you to see. the technological landscapes that are projected onto the fabrics give the illusion of this as you move through and have to move past the fabric to get to the end of the installation. this makes the installation somewhat immersive. you have to fly through this network, an interesting play on space rather than using a video to represent it. as you go through this computer network, you gradually get to a 3d projection of my scan.
this 3d scan at the end of the installation is initially covered up by the fabrics you need to go through. this shows how you have to dig deep to gain access to your own data, whilst representing the difficulty in consciously understanding the amount of data that is harvested and farmed from you on a daily basis, building up a digital depiction of you. as you enter the final bit of the installation you will see this networked, incomplete scan, mapped onto a mannequin, or even better, a hologram. i need to experiment with pepper ghosting so i can decipher whether it will be possible to create the illusion of a hologram at the end. this would be a more effective technique in terms of my concept as it will add to the immaterial nature of the digital avatar created by your data. as you can see on the diagram, i have placed a projector on either side of the scan, this is presuming i would use the mannequin but i would personally rather use the hologram
i would additionally like to add a sensor to the installation. a sensor after the third piece of fabric so when you enter the end, it is initially a dark space. when moving a few inches closer the sensor is triggered and the 3d scan appears. showing the layers upon layers that are intended to hide this extreme harvesting and exploitation of our data and online interactions
this installation is dependent on a dark room, so i am really hoping this is possible to obtain. it is also dependent on getting my hands on this many projectors and a space big enough to make it all possible, but i will add the need to buy a few of my own into my budget. if the space is not big enough i  may have to only use 2 fabric sheets or adapt the installation in some way, this is not set in stone so that is easily doable. i am excited to be able to create this

technological landscapes 3d scan
this is a short overview of the 3d scan i have made. this is in the second stage of the building of the 3d object, the stage i feel is most relevant aesthetically to my concept. here you can see the intricate networks that begin to build up this digital depiction of me. unfortunately, some of the green marks are near impossible to get rid of as they become attached to the marks that are necessary to build this scan, some marks have become integrated with the background so as you see here is the best i was able to subtract the green marks. this is the best version of the scan i produced, i enjoy the gaps and the inexact parts that cause for an altered depiction of me, showing how the internet can grasp all your data but there will be gaps and mishaps, they don’t have the physical version of you that resides in ‘reality’. so here is my 3d scan, created using the metashape software

i recorded new footage from the metashape software & have tested it by cropping it to assess the effect i could get once i have removed the surrounding tools of the software. i had to export the video at a lower file size, but it would be of a higher quality when projecting it. this represents the building of the networks and therefore your digital avatar

technological landscapes
here i went back into the metashape software and experimented with the digital forms and landscapes the process of building the 3d scan creates. this again, is zoomed in images of the networks that build the digital depiction of me, an abstract form of ‘self portrait’ i feel these would be interesting to project on textured material, representing the collection of networks and data on the individual in the online environment
i went back in to play around with the software to see what other interesting digital realms i could create. they somewhat represent a vast galaxy, which could be seen as the online space of data we interact with. a never-ending technological creation. i find these aspects so interesting and wish to continue forward with using them in this project. i initially aimed to develop something aesthetically similar using after effects, but realised it would be more interesting and would hugely relate to the dataveillance concept, if i created these digital networks from the digital version of me i am producing. it is not obvious what these are on first look, showing the secrecy and how these data corporations blend into the background. they aren’t visible unless you find them, through research. in this case, i am not visible but my networked data is. i guess you have to delve deep to access your data, through the digital realm. an interesting idea i would like to take forward into the development and layout of my installation
