Tomorrow's promise

Pairing: Shane Walsh × reader, Rick Grimes × sister reader

Lori gave you a knowing look while Andrea continued to whine about issues that weren’t real issues. While Maggie and Beth argued in another room, Andrea stated she thought you should try to encourage Beth to accompany you while taking Jace for a walk around the farm, insisting the fresh air would do the three of you some good.

You did want to snap back at her since Andrea was unhelpful most of the time, but you bit your tongue for the most part and started washing dishes in the kitchen. It’s not until Andrea mentions your brother and Shane being sexist since they always dealt with the more dangerous tasks, leaving the women behind to do all the housework.

“It's because they were cops! They risked their lives every day, and they know what they are doing.”

Andrea lets out an over-the-top huff, placing her hands on her hips. “Well, if they spent more time teaching us how to defend ourselves properly, then maybe we could share the load. I should be able to handle my own goddamn gun.”

“Oh yeah, because you’re so good at handling them.”

Lori shakes her head. She was trying her best to defuse the tension, but neither you nor the blonde were listening at this point.

“Excuse me?”

“Last time you fired a damn gun, you almost killed Daryl!”

You step out onto the porch with a fresh cup of coffee in your hand. It wasn’t the real stuff and properly tasted stale, but it was better than nothing. You sit down beside Maggie on the wooden steps and hand it to her. “I thought you could use this.”

“Thanks.”

“How is she?”

Maggie pauses before answering, “She’s alive.”

You give her a sympathetic smile. Things had gone from bad to chaotic in the last twenty-four hours. Beth had locked herself in a bathroom, broke the mirror, and then used the sharp material to cut herself; luckily, her father was able to stitch her wrist in time. Rick and Shane had taken the kid Randell somewhere far to leave him, but apparently the area was surrounded by walkers, so they brought him back to the farm, where he was now essentially a hostage.

“Since we got here, we’ve brought nothing but trouble; I’m sorry.”

“Yeah, you do,” she says, letting out a slight chuckle. “But if I’m being honest, I’m glad you folks came here. I just wish it was under better circumstances.”

You watch as Daryl comes out of the barn covered in blood, which you assumed came from Randell. You feel physically sick thinking of what could have transpired behind those wooden walls. You tell Maggie, “I’ll be back shortly.”

You walk quickly to grab a bucket of water that was half full and a cleanish cloth that was hanging up to dry, and you call out after your friend, “Daryl, wait up.”

He keeps walking towards one of the wells. “I gotta go wipe—”

“The blood off? Yeah, I got you covered.”

He lets out a snort as he begins to wash his hands. “You just assume I’d come out covered in blood?”

“I noticed the cut on your arm earlier, and I don’t want it to get infected.”

Daryl glances down at his arms before cleaning them as well. Usually he was covered in more dirt and dried blood than the rest of you; what worried you was the uncovered cut on Daryl’s arm surrounded by dirt. He says, “You're such a mom.”

Daryl asks how your injury from the crash is healing as you make your way towards your group, which is sitting by the tents outside. The first thing you notice is the look on Shane’s face; he’s looking pissed off as his eyes dart between you and Daryl.

"Boy, there’s got a gang, thirty men,” Daryl says. “They have heavy artillery, and they ain’t looking to make friends. They roll through here; our boys are dead. And our women... they’re going to wish they were.”

Hearing those words come from Daryl, you instantly become scared. You avoid making eye contact with Shane as you walk towards him; he hands you Jace before resting his hand against your hip. He whispers, “I won’t let anything happen to you.”

Carol notices Daryl’s bleeding knuckles. “What did you do?”

“Had a little chat.”

When your brother starts to talk about ‘eliminating the threat’ you shake your head, not wanting to hear anymore, you decide to leave the conversation. “I’m going to take Jace inside.”

You didn’t doubt Randall was a bad person, and you believed you would rather wish you were dead if his gang tuned up, but you weren’t going to partake in anything to do with him.

“Can I ask you something?”

As soon as you hear Dale’s voice, you roll your eyes. You walked to the other side of the farm so you could be on your own with Jace. “I appreciate what you’re trying to do, Dale, but I’m not going to vote.”

“So you’re just going to stand by and let your brother kill the boy?”

You lean against a tree, continuing to stoke Jace’s thin, dark hair with your fingers. “My personal opinion on this doesn’t matter, but what does is keep our people safe.”

Dale looks disappointed. “So you agree with killing him; you just don’t want to admit it.”

Learning that Randall stood by and watched as men in his group raped two teenage girls in front of their father stirred something inside—emotions that you couldn’t shift. “All due respect, it’s different from us, Dale. I understand why it’s wrong, all of us against one kid, but…” You stop talking when your mouth suddenly becomes dry, and it takes you a moment to find your voice again. “I’ve met Randall’s before, and trust me, you want to be on the opposite side of them.”

Dale gives your arm a friendly squeeze and says, “I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

He licks at his lips and says, “I spoke to Shane earlier to try and convince him to change his mind.”

“I imagine that went well,” you snort.

“He was dead set on never letting a man like that near you again, and I had a theory you met men like that in the past; that’s why I’m sorry. Nobody deserves—”

“Dale,” tears fall from your eyes. “Just please, don’t go there.”

“I’m sorry if I’ve upset you. Just—they listen to you, Rick, Shane; hell, even Daryl seems to value your opinion.”

You remain standing in the same spot as the older man walks away. “Dale?” He turns back around to face you. “How long did it take you to stop trusting Shane?”

“I never did.”

You stand by the front doorway of Greene's farmhouse; everyone has gathered to talk about Randall’s fate. You had already made it clear you weren’t getting involved, a decision that received mixed reactions; some thought it was unfair, while those closest to you understood why you weren’t getting involved.

You hold your hand out for your nephew and say, “Carl, I need you to come help me in the RV.”

He pouts, “What with?”

“I need you to help watch Jace while I mend a bunch of torn-up clothes.”

“Now?”

“Go.”

Carl sulks as he walks by you to go outside. You didn’t really need his help in the RV, but you, Rick, and Lori wanted him out of the discussion.

“You’re really not going to share your thoughts on this?” Dale asks.

You glance around to make sure nobody else is listening in before answering. “Honestly, I don’t know what I think. I want to believe I’m a good person who votes against it, but then I remember what he’s done, and then I’m unsure. But I do admire you, Dale; it’s not easy. Always remember who you are.”

He gives you a slight nod, and then you leave the house.

You’re unsure of how much time has passed by when you hear a loud yell of pain. “Carl, stay here with Jace and lock the door behind me.”

You run out of the RV and in the direction of the field. Your brother calls out for T-dog to get a shotgun as he follows closely behind you.

Spotting a walker trying to bite Dale, you pull your blade out of your belt and stab it in the head before pushing it off him, but you’re too late. Dale’s stomach had already been ripped open, and he was bleeding out. “No! Rick, Rick! Help, over here!”

Daryl is the next person to arrive. He kneels down and says, “Hey, buddy, you’re going to be okay.”

Rick and Andrea both scream for Hershel to come outside as soon as they see Dale, but you knew there was nothing he could do. You hold Dale’s hand and kiss his forehead. “It’s okay; it’s going to be okay.”

Dale was so confused by the loss of blood that it was hard to know if he knew what you were saying to him. But you could tell he was in pain and choking on his own blood from the way he gurgled.

“Shane... Rick,” with glossy eyes, you look up at them, your voice breaking. “He’s suffering; please do something.”

Rick points his gun at Dale’s head, but he’s unable to pull the trigger, so Daryl takes the gun from him. You move further back as Daryl kneels down, but you still hold onto Dale’s hand, not wanting him to feel alone.

“Sorry, brother.” Daryl pulls the trigger, ending Dale’s suffering.

Reborn as the Enemy Prince Official Character Profile and Author Q&A

With the release of the manhwa adaptation of "How to Live as the Enemy Prince" (or its official English title "Reborn as the Enemy Prince") this month, I've decided to loosely translate the character profile and Q&A the author released when she was still alive back in 2020.

And probably because lots of people are in disbelief that the 2nd prince's name is "Plants" and not "Plantz" or "Planche." 😂 Sorry, everyone. The author included an English translation of the character names in her character profile, so Manta's English translation of Plants's name is correct.

One more interesting trivia before we begin. The Korean title is 적국의 왕자로 사는 법, which roughly translates to "How to Live as the Prince of an Enemy Country." Its abbreviated by Korean readers as 적왕사, which interestingly translates into "The Red King." Probably a foreshadowing of Kalian's future. But I'll use the abbreviation REP from the official English title to avoid confusion.

Q: I loved the fact that the setting book(?) provided information about modern perfumes suitable for our princes! Is there a modern perfume that would suit the female characters (Dmirea, Hina, Arianne, ***) from REP?

A: Because I’m completely clueless to this TT_TT, my thoughts may be very different from the readers’ thoughts. First of all, let me tell you what comes to mind… :)

A: I laughed for a moment while stuttering. Ugh lol

In the text, when Syspanian takes the shape of a black butterfly, it is often described as 'like a lump of light from the night sky'. What Syspanian take is not a real butterfly with antennae, a tube, six thin legs, or a soft body, but the shape of a butterfly made of light. When it flies, black light scatters, but the wings do not drip. Therefore, there are no antennae~

The shape of the wings seems to be similar to that of a swallow butterfly. I think you can think of black swallowtail butterflies and mountain swallowtail butterflies. :)

Q:Based on Bern, who appeared in episode 421 (+episode 392~), how tall is he?

A: Since age in the story is based on birthday, Kalian is actually in his late teens. Although the exact age was not given, the appearance of Bern, which Kalian assumed at the time of disguise, was older than Kalian (18 years old in Korean standards) and younger than Kyrie (21 years old in Korean standards). It's almost the end of the growing season~

A: The finger line is close to this shape: [ ) ] ←. In general, I feel similar to the situation I was in when I was holding back laughter, but when it's okay to laugh openly, I'm the type of person who usually smiles in a 'red-faced line' manner.

However, if you are in a situation where you want to laugh a little mischievously but have to hold back [ :) ] ← I think you may have drawn a face like this before. I don't think I'll draw the shape of Kalian's nose due to his inattentive personality, and if he wants to laugh so much that he has to hold back, a smiling eye smile won't solve the problem ^^, so I don't think I'll draw an eye smile like this. lol

A: Yes. It was even bigger than Bern. In the past, Bern was 188cm tall and Kyrie was over 2m tall.

A: I'm sorry, but I've never thought about each character's theme song separately.

However, when looking at the novel as a whole, if there is anything that comes to mind, I think of pianist and composer Jeon Su-yeon's “Fate, Love” or “Lucid Dream” lol

Q: Are there no cigarettes in the world of REP? If so, I'm also curious about whether or not each character smokes.

A: If there had been, it would have been mentioned in the story~

There is alcohol but no cigarettes. Even though the main characters are adults in the story, they are still teenagers, so it may be difficult to accept them emotionally. lol

Q: If Sillike used Reunieri perfume, I ask because it seems like perfume existed in that era as well. Do princes use perfume? If you were to compare it to modern perfume, I wonder what perfume would be suitable for the princes!

A: There are perfumes that combine scents such as flowers or fruits. From a worldview, it is not used to mask bad odors like perfume that was used in the Middle Ages, but rather to create a 'scent' like in modern times.

It's a modern perfume... I actually don't know much about men's perfume brands and I don't even know what perfumes are coming out these days, haha. But if I write down what comes to mind, it's as follows. :)

A: Among the king's children, the daughter is a princess. In the worldview of the novel, there is no discrimination based on gender, so there is a natural right of succession, and the Syspanian blessing is passed down to the king's direct line, so there is no problem. Q: If you compare the characters to animals

A: The fixed image in the story is “Cat Kalian,” and it is mostly described from Allan’s point of view. They have an image of being silent/slippery/always hiding their claws, etc. In the case of Plants, it is often compared to a “wolf” (it has nothing to do with the wolf of the great desert), and has a strong sense of responsibility/concentration that does not back down in a fight or does not miss the moment to attack when facing an opponent stronger than itself. Q: Do the new tangerines have to be from Secretia? Do the princes eat the tangerines by peeling them off? Do they cut the tangerines into pieces when peeling them? Do they eat one piece at a time or in two or three portions? How many tangerines does Chase eat a day? Sweet tangerines. I might not like it that much... I might like eating grilled tangerines..

A: Tangerines are also grown in Cyries. However, Kalian liked it a little more because it had the meaning of “Mount Secretia.” Tangerines are also grown in the southern region of Cyries. (The tangerines in the honey tea that Ian gave Kalian were from Cyries acid. Haha)

Kalian just eats it without removing it. Peel the skin into pieces starting from the top. Because I like tangerines that are not fully ripe, it is difficult to peel them into petals at once. :) Also, the small tangerines are split into two bites, and the large tangerines are split into four pieces. I put a lot in my mouth and gobble it up. Very small tangerines can be eaten in one bite.

Kalian likes both sweet and sour tangerines, but prefers the sour ones much more. I have never grilled tangerines because I know that grilling them weakens their sour taste.

In the case of Chase, when tangerines are in season, he eats about 3 to 5, but does not pile them up like Kalian and eat them. Instead of peeling the tangerines yourself, you eat the peeled tangerines with a fork. Haha, Randel and Plants don't really like tangerines, but if they had the chance to eat them, I think they would be similar to Chase. I also don't like my nails turning yellow.

Infodumping/venting about the lack of Mashle fanfics on most fanfic platforms

WARNING: This isn't a vent. This is a mashle fanfic idea dumpster fire with MANGA SPOILERS.

I'm so heartbroken discovering that there is barely any mashle x oc content out there even x readers or character x character. I have so many tiny plot point ideas for a Rayne/Rain x fem oc/reader. Which resulted in me beginning to write my own oc, Darren Randel. Her name's stolen from my random ass mha oc Darren Halston. Darren Randel is lowkey different (she's less edgy/and emotionally unstable) even though they both have brown hair.

PLS TELL ME IF YOU'RE GONNA STEAL OR GET INSPO FROM THIS PLS BECUZ I WOULD LIKE TO HELP.

SO-

What was the original plot idea you may ask?

Infamous girl from rival school transfers to Easton Magic Academy because she fell in love with Rayne Ames lol.

Lowkey unoriginal right?

So then I added an extra spin to it borrowing a key romance drama plot point from See You in My 19th Life: Darren only gets 3 chances to confess and have her feelings be reciprocated by Rayne, and if he rejects her feelings. She'll give up (on that romance).

The ending of the fanfic is bittersweet: She doesn't get Rayne. But they stay close friends.

OH BUT HERE'S WHAT I'M TRYNA FIGURE OUT TO ADD MORE OF THAT BITTERSWEET FEEL TO IT:

1. Darren confused her initial crush on Rayne to be love at first sight/romantic feelings when she actually felt like she had a friend/that sense of trust in him compared to others.

1a. As a result of that she kind of decides to nullify all her chances of getting him.

1b. Regardless of this plot point she still ends up developing actual romantic attraction for Rayne and still doesn't get her feelings reciprocated.

2. It turns out that Rayne ALSO developed feelings for Darren over the course of the fic but he still rejects her advances due to either:

a. Her newfound realisation that she confused her feelings of attraction for something like companionship or trust. (1a)

b. His new position and role as Divine Visionary and the fear that she would be in more danger than she already was. (For context: her former school Walkis has so much beef with her existence for the 4 ish years she was there that they want her erased from existence and the Bureau of Magic is extremely alert about her whereabouts due to that and her skills which will be explained in the OC Profile section below).

c. Typical fears of a dude who for most of his life before Easton was seen as a nuisance alongside his younger brother Finn. (Big headcanon.) Doubt he cares/he probably would shove in the aristocrats face if he was dating her honestly (fake dating plot point???)

When she manifests her third line, it appears across and under her eyes. She switches between 3 types of bottoms. Pants, Long skirt, shorter skirt of which she wears jogging leggings underneath but they’re all dark blue you know.

Skills/Abilities:

General Magic: Offensive Magic - Due to the competitive environment of Walkis, she has a general grasp on nearly all learnable offensive magic spells. Being able to cast them with ease compared to more typical and unlethal spells. Her speed at casting these spells were unmatched during her time in middle school.

Personal Magic: Impart - Darren’s magic essentially allows her to balance out either magical power, strength, and weaknesses between her targets (living and non living) or with herself. It’s essentially cheating at life. The magic is highly confusing due to the fact that she doesn’t have to chant the words to the magic and its essentially treated as a debuffing magic (which is wrong because she aims to fight everyone on fair terms).

Impart Zero - It dispels a spell.

Impart Seconth: Impartial Vice - Instead of deducting and balancing their power, like a water dam. Water is added to balance both sides.

Summon: Themis (Goddess of Justice) - When summoned, the user’s wand transforms into a dull sword whilst Themis appears with blindfold with a scale in hand

Themis Inclination - Themis appears and buffs her attacks’ range but she rarely utilises this due to how lackluster it was against Rayne (ineffective) and other people

Impart Thirds: Divine Mercy - It’s essentially renders its' target a painless death. It's an instant kill move.

Impart Thirds: Divine Tears - Unlike Divine Mercy, this one's pure torture. (To be developed later) (Tears of Themis reference?)

Wandless Casting: Her aptitude to cast magic without a wand has earned her infamy and wanted death since she enrolled into Walkis in middle school. It has also made her wanted by a few subdivisions of the Bureau of Magic, namely Magic Talent and Magic Research Administration.

Immense Speed: Exactly what running at 4am, and doing marathons before starting class does.

Immense Endurance: Due to the fact she does running as a hobby, her stamina/endurance in terms of speed/running is more than decent. She can withstand advanced offensive spells typically used by the police.

Equipment:

Basic Wand - She prefers to not wield a wand though finding it too rudimentary for her purposes, hence many assume she cannot unleash her secondth and thirds magic (to which she has). It stays in her cloak mostly.

Infinite Storage Fabric - Lining her uniform’s robe it has the ability to store anything it can consume within its’ own subspace. She stores majority of her items in it. Even though it’s mass doesn’t change due to how many things there are, it still is a heavy fabric. It will help fish out whatever the user who is currently wearing the cloak wants to have.

Resistance bands - She carries it around to do some exercise. Especially when she’s in the kitchen

Thick Rope - She carries this around as well but its to apprehend anyone she sees.

Photo album of Rayne Ames - She carries this with her at all times alongside a self printing camera. Don't worry, she gets permission to take the pictures.

Family/History:

The Randel Family while not aristocrats or anything, take pride in their magic aptitude which is a recent cut above the rest. Born as a two-liner magic user, she was put on a pedestal with unwanted attention, which is why she has a hime cut to hide her other mark. Her parents treat her like a trophy child and place their expectations on her.

She’s an only child but has an extensive selection of uncles and aunts 5 each. But she prefers her grandma over everyone else.

She had a tendency to break her wands while practising magic as a kid. Due to this her family/parents decided to just stop supplying wands (cuz it was costly) which resulted in her adapting the way she casted magic spells without the use of a wand. During her entrance exam into Walkis, she was ridiculed for not having a wand and got into trouble while getting the highest score of her batch in terms of magic.

I was tempted to add a Modern Magic/unmagic AU of this as well based on the anime endings which I find to be completely confusing even though they're fun. (SERIOUSLY, HOW IN THE WORLD DO RAYNE AND FINN HAVE FANCY OLD CARS THOSE ARE EXPENSIVE TO MAINTAIN WHEN THEY'RE CANONICALLY ORPHANS UNLESS DIVINE VISIONARY IN MODERN AU IS A SUPER RICH POSITION-)
