there’s something so important to me about steve spending more and more time with billy and noticing small details and catching moments where the facade slips and slowly piecing it all together.

just- little details.

like the way billy’s face changes the first time steve asks him about his necklace. how his fists clench when steve mentions the fact his own dad is an asshole, not yet knowing what that implies to someone like billy. the way he plays with his ring and bites his nails when he gets anxious. how he stares a little too long at the guy on the screen when they watch a movie. how he shows up one too many times on steve’s doorstep with a nasty bruise and a split lip, knuckles completely untouched. the practiced way he’ll pop another button on his shirt and bat his eyelashes just to get where he needs to be. how he’ll bare his teeth when backed into a corner, figuratively or literally, all while fighting back tears.

how, underneath that all, he’s just a kid.

an angry, lonely, fucked up kid who’s been let down one too many times, sure.

but there’s more. billy likes surfing. billy likes music. billy likes ice cream and sunflowers and the colour blue. he likes the stars in hawkins and he says he likes steve’s smile too.

and steve-

steve thinks he likes billy. wants to be there for him. it’s hard. it’s complicated. it’s the sick feeling in his stomach when billy disappears for four days. it’s smoking together at the quarry and holding billy while he sleeps. it’s arguments and tears and ‘why the fuck do you even care’s.

but steve thinks billy’s worth it. all of billy. the fun parts and the fucked up parts.
