Lepus Liberation
This is a fun little gift I did for RedBand.Jackalope! We were just chatting a bit and talking about bunny rescue centers when my muse pulled out a hammer and clonked me on the head, prompting this story! Jillian the Jackalope hears about a less-than-reputable feral bunny rescue center and goes to give them a piece of her mind. However, it seems that the "good" doctor may be breaking a few rules at Trivial Matters once more. Now she's going to show them they can't just use bunnies to get money. She's going to show them in a BIG way. Jillian grumbled under her breath as she sped down the open desert road.  Her blue Jeep Cherokee's engine roared in the relative desert silence as her sandal clad paw pressed down harder on the accelerator.  The heat coming off of the blinding sand all around caused the air to shimmer and created phantom puddles on the blacktop.  Her hands gripped the steering wheel tightly as her mind kept going back to what she had seen that morning.
The fluffy, white-furred jackalope was practically trembling with anger as she remembered the message she had seen that morning.  A news report on a so-called feral bunny rescue where the owners had no idea what they were doing but somehow operated just within the rule of law.  Half of the poor things were unbrushed, their coats so matted that their fur was falling out in clumps.  Not to mention they hadn't been properly separated so nearly all of the females rabbits were currently pregnant!
She had instantly decided she was heading down there to give them a piece of her mind.  The staff needed to either learn how to watch over the rabbits the right way or take them across town to a real animal shelter where they would be properly cared for.  Exactly how she was going to make them do this was another problem entirely.
She drove along the desert road, her temper began to cool a bit as the warm, dry air from her open window rushed through her soft fur and long, brown hair.  She sighed softly and itched at the stump of her broken antler.  She realized there realistically wasn't anything she could do, and the thought of a face to face conflict with these random strangers was causing a knot to form in the pit of her stomach.  Checking in the rear-view mirror and seeing nobody coming up behind her, she decided to pull over to the side of the road and think a minute.
She was so lost in her own thoughts, she didn't even hear the loud, droning buzz of the over-sized silvery mosquito as it swept in through her open window.  She didn't even feel it land lightly on the collar of her black t-shirt.  Even the quiet hiss as its needle-like proboscis extended went completely unnoticed.  A glowing green liquid dripped from it as the tiny mechanical monstrosity leaned towards the vulnerable flesh of her neck.
“OUCH!  Damn it!!”  She jumped and slapped at the side of her neck, an expression of disgust on her face as she felt something fairly large crunch under her hand.  Looking down at her palm, she saw some kind of green glop staining her fur and what she thought had to be a crushed bluebottle fly.  What other biting insect looked so shiny and metallic after all, even if it did seem a bit big. She wrinkled her nose as she grabbed a leftover fast food napkin from a pocket on the drivers' side door, wiping the mess off of her fingers.  “Ugh, just one annoyance after another today.”  She tugged at her seat belt grumbling about how tight it had gotten and adjusted it a little as she got ready to turn her truck around and head back towards home.
As she reached out to turn the key she overshot it by an inch or so.  She blinked, taking a look at her hand, turning it from side to side in front of her.  It looked swollen somehow, the knuckles a little stiff as she flexed her fingers.  “What the hell, am I having an allergic reaction to a bug bite now?”
She leaned over to pop open the glove compartment, her larger fingers fumbling with the latch.  Finally getting it open, she hunted for a mirror to get a better look at the bite mark.  The jackalope was sure she would find some hideous, swollen red welt on the side of her neck.  As she sat back up, she winced in pain as she felt her one unbroken antler rip across the ceiling, gouging a deep tear in the headliner before scraping the metal underneath.  Her eyes went wide as she ducked down a little, getting short of breath as she felt the seat belt constricting her waist a bit more. She threw the driver's side door open with enough force to rock the truck on its springs.  Almost in a panic, she couldn't unfasten the tightening seat belt from around her midsection.  She yanked hard on the fabric and there was a loud snap, sending the poor jackalope tumbling out of the vehicle and onto the hot, sandy pavement of the desert road. She pushed herself up off of the ground, dusting off the sand as she stood.  Reaching out with one hand she slammed the door of the car shut in frustration, nearly causing the vehicle to roll over.  A slight wave of vertigo swept over her as she looked more closely at the still gently rocking cobalt blue truck.  It had always been about nose height on her, her eyes looking right over the top of it.  Now, however it was just shoulder height, and chest height a few seconds after that. She took a deep breath and slowly let it out, trying to calm herself and failing miserably.  “Okay.  I shouldn’t panic.  But...  I think I’m definitely panicking!  What?  Whatwhatwhatwhat?!” The slowly growing jackalope took a step back from the vehicle and immediately lost her balance.  The heel of her paw had extended back off of the rear of her sandal as she grew and offered no support as she toppled back and landed heavily on her rump! “OW! Mmmmf...”  She groaned, focused on the pain in her rear for a split second before realizing that the pain in her feet was increasing. She glared down at her paws, already a bit over-sized because of her species and now seemingly expanding by the second.  Her toes almost seemed to be inflating as they were constricted tighter and tighter by the sandal straps. It wasn't long before the tortured leather snapped and sent the soles flying from her big, fluffy paws to bounce off of the side of her truck. The cuffs of her blue denim jeans were rapidly retreating up her calves as the brass button on them snapped open.  She gasped, grabbing at her waist as the zipper tore itself apart.  Looking down, she could see  her t-shirt stretching itself rapidly into a halter top as her poor, straining bra was overflowed by her furry endowments.  There was an almost metallic snap as the tortured support device ended up lying useless atop the rapidly shredding denim stretched across her swelling thighs.
She blinked her big, pink eyes as her vision blurred.  The rising jackalope crossed her eyes to see a tiny pair of glasses lying flat atop her snout.  She leaned forwards a little and they slipped right off, landing with a soft clink atop her dwindling SUV.  Scrambling back away from the vehicle before she grew into it and caused serious damage, the newly minted macro realized that just one of her paws was now larger than the dependable vehicle that had carried her all the way out here just moments ago.  It was just a few seconds more before she realized that she was completely nude. In spite of her thick, fluffy fur keeping the giantess completely decent, she leaped to her feet with an earth-shaking boom, wrapping one arm over her chest and placing a hand over her crotch. Heat blossomed in her cheeks, the deep red blush forming beneath her white fur was easily visible.
The giantess' shout echoed out across the empty vastness of the desert, “WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?!” Embarrassment was quickly being overpowered by anger. She had come all of the way out here to give those so called bunny rescuers a piece of her mind.  Now she was in the middle of the desert, naked, and gigantic.  Frowning, she moved off of the road, into the soft yellow sand.  It was actually somewhat soothing to her aching paws as she started stomping her way towards her original destination. It wasn't long before the giant had reached her goal.  The so-called bunny shelter was just up ahead.  Inside the building, a ferret, a deer and a mouse were racing around, trying to catch various items that were falling from various rickety shelves as they were hit by what they thought was a minor earthquake.  As the tremors grew stronger they gave up on trying to save the toppling merchandise and quickly moved outside.  They froze in place as they gazed up at the fluffy giantess standing before them, tapping one massive paw impatiently on the sand.  They were practically throwing one another to the ground as they tried to make a run for it.
“Oh no you don't!” Jillian boomed, lifting one huge, soft paw and plopping it down on the fleeing wannabe rescuers.
She pinned them down against the warm sand as she hissed through gritted teeth, “I've been walking through the desert, my feet hurt, and you're staying RIGHT THERE until I get these poor bunnies out of here and to a REAL rescue shelter.”  The gigantic jackalope slowly slid her paw through the sand.  Bunching it up beside her huge foot, she ended up burying the workers partially in a pile of it, leaving their heads and arms free to cough and struggle. She turned her attention to the rickety metal building and shrugged.  Gripping the front edge of the tin roof in her powerful hands she started rolling it back like it was the lid of a huge tin of sardines.  Squinting her eyes as she peered through the gloom, her heart nearly broke as she saw hutches filled with bunnies everywhere, many of them in truly horrible shape. Casting about for some way to carry the poor things, she spied the company van sitting off to the side of the employee parking lot.  Crouching down beside the pile of sand, she grumbled out, “I should squash the lot of you for the way you've treated these poor babies, but instead, you're going to help fix things.”
She used a finger to carefully dig out the employees who were still struggling in the sand.  “You're going to unlock the back of that van and you're carefully going to secure every last bunny hutch there is into the back of it.  Right now.” It took a bit of time to get everything loaded and the doors shut.  One of the workers, a slinky looking ferret started to open the driver's side door, “So, where we goin'?” Jillian slammed the door shut with a single fluffy finger.  It impacted the van with enough force to cave in the tough metal, making her wince internally.  She would have to be careful moving it with the bunnies inside.
“WE aren't going anywhere.  I'm taking these poor things to a real rescue and you're all going to learn to care for bunnies properly.”  She gently scoops the van up in one hand, cradling it against her belly as she glared down at them all.
“Because if I ever hear about this sort of thing happening again?”  She cocked one leg back and kicked the side of their main building.  There was an earsplitting bang accompanied by the tortured shriek of tearing metal.  Without the roof to help hold it in place, the corrugated metal wall shredded apart like tissue paper as her paw blasted through and slammed down inside.  She crushed desks, chairs, and filing cabinets flat against the concrete floor.  Turning her white, fuzzy tail towards the shocked furres and her nose up into the air, she slowly walked off into the desert to the north, her booming footsteps echoing into the distance.
Her towering legs were beginning to ache as it took a good half hour of walking before she reached her destination.  Car alarms were blaring all around her as she carefully picked her way through the suburbs around town.  She laid back her ears, trying to block out the piercing noise as she tried not to cause too much damage.  Finally, she carefully crouched down, lowering the van gently into the parking lot outside the Happy Hutch Bunny Rescue.  As lightly as she could, she used a claw tip to tap on the side of the building.  It was a young dog, a retriever of some kind from the look of it, who stepped outside and very nearly turned and ran right back in before Jillian called out for him to wait. “Hold on, please.  There are some rabbits in the back of this van in pretty bad shape.  They really need your help.” Reaching out, she ripped the rear of the van open, no longer caring about any damage done to the vehicle.  Seeing the shape that the rabbits within were in, he quickly called the rest of the staff on his radio.  The motley assortment of workers formed a sort of fireman's bucket brigade to get the hutches full of injured rabbits inside the facility as quickly as possible. The giant jackalope smiled brightly and sighed, rubbing absently at the stump of her broken antler as she felt that this was a job well done.  She crouched down above the crew, telling them, “Thank you all so much for your help.” Rising back up to her full towering height, she looked down at the van for a moment.  “Oh yeah, you guys might want to call the number on the side of that thing so they can come get it back.”  Shrugging a shoulder, she then carefully picked her way back through the sprawling suburbs and back out into the desert.
It was nearly sunset when Jillian finally saw the deep blue blur of her truck in the distance. Everything as far as she could see was a brilliant orange hue that the sunset cast upon the sand.  She was completely exhausted, her feet hurt horribly, and more than anything she really wanted to just go home. “Wait.  What the hell am I going to do when I get home?  I can't even fit in my yard, much less my house at this size!”
Feeling utterly defeated, she slumped her way closer to the vehicle, then blinked as she realized that it didn't seem to be getting any closer as she approached.  Was it a mirage?  Was she actually lost somewhere in the middle of the desert? Her heart leaped in her chest as she realized the reason it didn't seem to be getting closer.  She was shrinking!  She was finally returning to normal!  Whatever it was that had caused her to grow into a macro must have finally worn off.  She breathed a huge sigh of relief as she picked up the pace, hurrying back to her truck. She reached it just as the sun dipped below the horizon and the first chill of the desert evening started to creep in. She stared at the road near her truck in awe.  The pavement was cracked and broken, crushed into the shape of a huge paw.  Her ruined sandals were flung to the side of the road underneath the truck and a few scattered rags were all that remained of her ruined clothing.
She headed back over to her truck, for once in her life actually glad she had left the keys in the ignition. She was just about to wonder if she should risk driving without her glasses when a soft glint of reflected moonlight caught her eye.  She gave a little whoop of joy as she stood on tiptoe for a second, ignoring the pain in her calves as she grabbed her glasses from the roof of the truck where they had landed earlier and slipped them on. The bridge a little bent, but she could easily tighten them when she got home!  She sighed happily to herself as she perched her glasses atop her muzzle, smiling to herself.  A feeling of contentment and a job well done gave her peace of mind as Jillian slipped behind the wheel of the old blue Cherokee and started home.
The End?

thanks sonia!!
🖊 Post a snippet from a current WIP.
“What happened?” TK asks, still coming to.
“You fainted. Do you think you can get back on the sofa?”
At TK’s nod, Carlos eases him off the floor, taking on most, nearly all of his weight. TK is unsteady in his arms, still shaking as Carlos places him gently on the cushions.
“I’m going to check your temperature again,” Carlos says, reaching for the thermometer that had been placed on the coffee table since its last use while TK mumbles some form of agreement. Unlike the previous time, TK does not put up any sort of argument as the device is placed under his tongue. When it beeps, Carlos almost does a double take when he looks at the numbers. “103, it went up a bit in a short time.”
He’s trying to keep his worry at bay; a task that’s quite hard to do when the person who actually has training for this kind of medical emergency is also the barely coherent one. If they were home, he could easily ask Tommy or Nancy, or really anyone from the 126 to come over and help him figure this out. He could also just as easily take TK to see a doctor, or even drive him to the emergency room.
Unfortunately, none of those things are options at the moment.
🏅 What is something you recently felt proud of in regard to your writing (finished a fic, actually planned for once, etc). ↳ i was really proud that jillian and i finished the tk and buck 2x03 whump fic!! i'm also proud bc i have a few fics going, in addition to the sicktember prompts, so even though my writing muse has died a little, i still have some good things going and i'm really excited to share.

2020 Reading Challenge - E-Book Edition!
According to Amazon, I have exactly 294 e-books currently sitting in my Kindle library.
Granted, some of these books have been read and are being saved for a second (or third, or fourth) re-read, but when it comes down to it, that number is around 40 books, give or take.
Which means I still have over 250 books that need to be read.
And it’s not like I haven’t tried! There are plenty of titles that, when opened up, will go to the last place I left off - that being chapter 5, or maybe chapter 10. But sometimes life gets in the way. Or a sudden interest in another author. Or a new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. But whatever the reason may be, it’s over 250 books that haven’t been read. Challenge accepted!
For 2020, I commit to not buying any new books to add to my Kindle library (checking out books from the library is ok, because you’ve gotta support your local library!), and instead focus on the books I already have. So no addition of 99 cent books, or Kindle Unlimited books, or books that are suddenly 75% off. Only the books that I currently have.
As the reading commences, and after the book is finished, I’ll update my list to indicate what has been completed, along with the date purchased, and a short review (or a reason I just couldn’t finish it at all).
Below is the list for future reference - and to clarify my what my favorite genre is. Spoiler: it’s romance novels.

B, E, I, K, O - Jillian
B - Bondage (do they like it? do they not? do they prefer to be the one being tied or the one doing the tying?)
Typically she does not want to be bound. She may have a little #trauma (by that i mean she absolutely does) so if she is bound in any way then odds are she isn’t having a good time. Like pinning her arms above her head with your hand is okay because that’s just for a minute or so, usually, but she doesn’t want to be tied to anything. That’s not to say she doesn’t get tied to shit because, ya know, people are assholes and she’s slept with a lot of assholy people but that isn’t sex she is enjoying.
E - Extra info (any other fetishes? feet? leather? role playing? blood? fantasies that they might want to experience not on this list?)
Hmm, she’s too new for me to really have a good enough grasp on this. But she’s done basically everything haha she wouldn’t like anything with blood or feet but she also isn’t saying no to much. Odds are, if she likes something with one person that doesn’t mean she’ll like it with someone else. So having fetishes and favorite things is kinda hard for her
I - Impact play (here’s where talking about things like spanking, paddles, canes, floggers and the like.)
Yeah, sure, the person she’s sleeping with can spank her with things. Again, she might not necessarily be enjoying it because some assholes she’s slept with think slapping is just spanking across the face but whatever, she thinks there are worse things
K - Kissing (what parts of their body do they like having kissed? what parts of their partner do they enjoy kissing? do they like leaving marks / having marks left on them?)
She usually gets bored with just kissing. If you’re kissing her, use your teeth and tongue. Kiss her wherever you want, just make it kinky lol she doesn’t mind marks left behind because she’s usually got bruises and shit just from living so it doesn’t phase her.
O - Outdoor sex (have they ever done it in public? would they? where?)
Oh yeah. Jillian has had sex in some real strange places, okay. Parks, restaurant bathrooms, hospital waiting rooms, a church that one time. You name it, she’s probably done it. She’s the type of girl that will do whatever she needs to do in order to get something she needs to survive and, well, usually that means having sex with someone
Send me one of my muses names :)

Trustworthy: The Lynn Shelton Q&A.
“I wanted to let myself have a bit of fun.” Filmmaker and actor Lynn Shelton chats with Letterboxd about the improvisational joy of her new film Sword of Trust, the “mixed bag” of streaming services, and the power of Claire Denis.
Lynn Shelton is a trusted director in the world of TV comedy, having helmed episodes of GLOW, Fresh off the Boat, Shameless, New Girl, The Good Place and many more. Along the way, she has written and directed several feature films that together form a smart, gently praised mumblecore-meets-naturalism oeuvre.
Shelton’s films are small delights, with low stakes and a human scale to them; introspective, contemporary chamber pieces that give her actors plenty of space to improvise. Your Sister’s Sister, which she wrote and directed, has been hailed on Letterboxd as a “terrific little character piece from three superb actors” (Mark Duplass, Emily Blunt and Rosemarie DeWitt), and her earlier mumblecore arthouse porno comedy Humpday (also starring Duplass, with a turn from Shelton as well) has received love for being “absolutely hilarious and deeply awkward”.
Her latest, Sword of Trust, which she co-wrote with Mike O’Brien (a.k.a. Pat the Pizza Guy from Booksmart), is a screwball inheritance comedy starring comedian and podcaster Marc Maron as Mel, a pawn shop owner. He teams up with a couple (Jillian Bell and Michaela Watkins), who are trying to hawk a Civil War-era sword. Together with Mel’s man-child shop assistant (Jon Bass), they are drawn into an absurd world of conspiracy theories.
Shelton’s association with Maron began in 2015 when she appeared on an episode of his exemplary podcast, WTF with Marc Maron. The following year, Shelton directed the first two episodes of the fourth and final season of the IFC series Maron (she also had an on-screen role in episode 11), and in 2017, she directed Maron’s Netflix special, Too Real. He is, it turns out, not only the star, but also the muse for Sword of Trust. “Since the first time I worked with him, I felt he had untapped depth that I wanted the world to see on-screen.”
Tumblr media
Marc Maron as Mel and Jon Bass as Nathaniel in ‘Sword of Trust’.
What inspired the premise of Sword of Trust? Lynn Shelton: [Marc and I] started writing a script for a different movie but it was hard to make progress on it because we’re both so busy. I was getting frustrated since I wanted to get on set with him, until he told me he would show up for any part I wrote for him. For Sword of Trust, I was inspired by seeing a pawn shop and thinking he would be a great pawn shop owner and that it would be a great place for a narrative to unfold.
I knew that I wanted to give myself the opportunity to explore a new genre and do a screwball caper. It would be emotionally grounded and have authentic characters who resonated as real people, but goes on a misadventure; a comedy that allows itself to go into slightly unrealistic territories. That was something I’ve never allowed myself to do. Before this I always wanted to make sure that every single minute was completely realistic.
I wanted to let myself have a bit of fun. I also wanted to return to improvisation, which I haven’t really done since Your Sister’s Sister, which was nearly ten years ago. I was excited to return to that territory and I started to assemble a cast of people I knew that would be really good at improvising around Marc.
Lastly, I really wanted it to involve some sort of a con that was relevant to what’s going on in our cultural political situation. One thing I’ve been obsessed with right now is this peak moment we’re having in society of conspiracy theories and the idea of alternative facts. I wanted to make a film that would point it out, but also one that wouldn’t make you want to slit your wrists as you walk out of the theater. That’s where the whole conspiracy theory premise came from.
When you direct with improvisation, what structures do you have in place to ensure you and the cast keep the characters and the story consistent, yet also make sure you stick to the schedule? I built those characters with and for the actors, especially Marc’s character Mel. With improvisation in general, it’s important to have clear back-stories and relationships between the characters going in, even weeks before you arrive on set. I asked the actors to get together with the people they were supposed to have relationships with to get the wheels turning about who these people were. By the time we got there they were able to start spinning out some sort of narrative that reflected all of that work we put into their back-stories.
This is a very plot-heavy movie, which was tightly pre-constructed, so it wasn’t the kind of improvisational movie where you show up and wonder ‘what will happen to these people today?’. I knew exactly what had to happen in each scene to map out into the final narrative. In this case we had a 50-page scriptment, where some scenes are written out in terms of dialogue but actors were always free to toss the specific words out the window and come up with their own replacements. There’s a lot of room for embellishments or improvised little side roads.
There’s a moment I always think of: when Jillian Bell picks up a sale item she was inspired by in the pawn shop we were shooting at and she created a whole little funny side thing about it. People are inspired by the environment they’re in and something will just come out of their mouths and they’ll just go down that road. It’s a beautiful thing.
I ask them to do a lot of heavy lifting in terms of getting some exposition out while planting seeds, but outside of that they can really play and have the freedom to find their own way through the beats of the scene and add their own little grace notes to how the scene plays out.

Jillian Bell as Cynthia and Michaela Watkins as Mary.
Did anything significantly change between the initial treatment and final film? How does it transform on set from the core essence of what you have on the page? There were a couple scenes that ended up getting thrown out on the cutting-room floor after we had a few feedback screenings. We had multiple endings and we got rid of a lot of them, which didn’t seem to hurt the film at all. We also had some great scenes that were added along the way. Halfway through the shoot we had a little break and Marc suggested a new scene that helped round out a couple of the side characters that we hadn’t gotten a chance to get to know very well.
I had planned for the confederate thug characters (who try to get the sword from Mel in the pawn shop) to turn up again later when the four characters are at the farm, but it was Marc’s idea for Mel to recognise them from when they were kids and embarrass them about how they would come into his shop when they were younger. It’s a tragic story Marc paints about them and it really shifts your perception of these two bozos and gives you a sense of sympathy for them even while they’re trying to be tough guys.
I love when you can take a couple of characters who seem to initially be two-dimensional and then you find out some extra facts about them and you’re able to turn them into fully fleshed-out human beings, even if they don’t get a lot of screen time. It’s a wonderful thing to humanize characters like that.
The scene in the back of the van—which I think is really the heart of the movie—also developed over time. In the script itself it just said: “they get to know each other in the back of the van.” That’s all it said. That was the most fully improvised scene in the film. I left it open-ended because I had a feeling it would fulfil a really important role in the movie but I didn’t know exactly what it was until we got going.
It became clear there was an emotional journey with Mel as he starts out very shut-down and he opens up a little bit by the end. I realized this scene needed to be used in the service of that arc, so I told the actors that I needed them to open up to each other and be vulnerable to each other so the characters could become more intimate. A lot of the time they drew from real life, drawing from first- or second-hand experiences to build those back-stories.
You’ve settled into a real groove with directing television. Your resume in that area is really impressive. What keeps you circling back to film when you could keep making a career out of being a TV director? Most of my income is from television and I really enjoy the extra-collaborative nature of television. It’s almost a pathology with filmmaking—I can’t stop doing it! This is my eighth movie and I just love it so much. I love the little family you develop. Obviously there’s a lot of overlap in the process of making film and television since it’s basically the same thing, but when I’m writing and directing I have more of an opportunity to set the tone and really create from the top-down of what I want the culture of the production to be like.
I can be the creative visionary in a way that, until I create my own television show, is not going to be possible. If I’m the director on a show, I’m ultimately in the service of other people. Luckily, I keep working with really visionary and talented people. This film, I sort of willed it into existence and it’s nice. I really wanted it to happen, so I asked a bunch of friends if they would join me, and it ended up becoming reality and there’s something really lovely about that.
Your last two films and your Marc Maron stand-up special are on Netflix. Anyone can (and should) watch them at any time, and streaming has completely transformed indie cinema in this way over the past decade. Yet, there are so many films that they can all still get lost in the shuffle. How do you feel about the way streaming has changed low-budget cinema? What work needs to be done to support them? This is a constant topic of conversation between filmmaker friends of mine. I know a lot of friends who were able to get films made that wouldn’t have been able to if not for Netflix, for instance. I don’t know if that’s even going to continue being the case because they seem to be shifting their paradigm in the kinds of films they’re producing, but for a while there they were almost the last bastion of producing films of a certain size that weren’t just giant tentpole movies.
Obviously films are still being made, little- to medium-sized films, but the issue of them getting lost in the shuffle because of this vast ocean of content that’s out there—unless you have this big machine waving flags to say: “look at this over here”—they will continue to disappear into the ether. It can be disheartening for sure.
My last film Outside In [one of Shelton’s more highly rated films on Letterboxd] had a very tiny theatrical run and basically went straight to Netflix, so I don’t really have any sense of who is seeing the film. But it’s interesting how I do have people reaching out to me saying they didn’t know I directed it but watched it because of Edie Falco, or they were recommended it. People do seem to see the movie, I just don’t know exactly what the numbers are. You just don’t know, so it’s a very strange feeling.
On the other hand, it’s very nice that it’s accessible and it can be discovered. If I wanted to point somebody to one of my films on Netflix, I know they can easily access it anytime. Streaming is a real mixed bag for independent filmmakers. Right now I have about 30 theaters showing Sword of Trust and I’m so thrilled that even if it’s just a weekend, at least a good chunk of folks will be able to see the film and have the communal experience the way I wanted in the first place.
Tumblr media
Lynn Shelton turns up on screen as well as behind the scenes, playing Mel’s ex, Deirdre, in ‘Sword of Trust’.
Finally, a favorite Letterboxd question: what was the film that got you into films? I could go to different points in my life. My mother was a huge fan of Jules et Jim so I saw that at a really early age and it had a big effect on me. It was the first time where I was ever aware of the filmmaker’s hand. I never started thinking about it until the one sequence where Jeanne Moreau is singing and it freezes and then it plays and then it freezes again and then it plays again and it made me realize there was a director who made that decision to do that. What does that mean? That got me thinking about filmmaking when I was really young.
Then later in life I heard Claire Denis speak when her film Friday Night was coming out. I remember finding out that she was 40 when she made her first feature and Friday Night was her sixth or seventh film. I had an epiphany that I could start making movies and it wasn’t too late for me because I didn’t make movies in my 20s and 30s. I didn’t make my first feature [We Go Way Back] until my late 30s. That was the film and filmmaker that really made me feel like ‘I can do this too’. Those would be my two bookends about being inspired to be a filmmaker.
‘Sword of Trust’ is on streaming services and playing in select US cinemas now. Images courtesy of IFC Films.

Oooh, awesome! Thanks.
I’ve included already answered ones below.
A Writer’s Ask Game
agwitow:
Send me an ask with the number(s) you’d like me to answer!
The Basics1.     Do you listen to music when you write?2.     Are you a pantser or plotter?
Started out as a pantser but after a few fic, I decided to give plotting a try. Am now a fully committed plotter.
3.     Computer or pen and paper?
Definitely computer. My fingers tend to cramp up even when I write a little bit and when I write a page or so in a notebook (I often carry a notebook with me when I go somewhere but don’t want to drag the laptop with me), about 3/4th of it illegible to anyone who isn’t me. In a way, that’s a good thing I suppose considering some of my smuttier fics, but overall it’s just a pain. And I always get disappointed when I get around to typing out the notes because it looks like a lot more when written out!
4.     Have you ever been published, or do you want to be published?
No, I have never been published. Maybe one day I’ll try my hand at it, but right now I don’t feel like my writing is “good enough” yet. No idea for an original novel either.
5.     How much writing do you get done on an average day?6.     Single or multiple POV?7.     Standalone or series?8.     Oldest WIP
Oldest WIP I’ve written for or does plotting also count? If it’s just written, then it’s probably my abandoned Down the Rabbit Hole (FFnet | AO3). I just... got stuck. And it was so incredibly frustrating and really stopped me from enjoying anything fic-related that I finally just said to hell with it and dropped it. I just checked and I stopped working on it in 2013... I still have the outline and everything though, so who knows?
9.     Current WIP10.  Do you set yourself deadlines?
The Specifics11.  Books and/or authors who influenced you the most
To be honest, I have no idea. I don’t know, maybe I’m rare but I’ve never been one of those people who held specific authors up as their ideal. I used to read a lot of books (nowadays less so, because 1) am adult and have to adult and 2) because I read fanfic and often would rather write my own fic than read a book) and have some favorites  (all fiction) but nothing that really stands out.
12.  Describe your perfect writing space13.  Describe your writing process from idea to polished
Hahaha! Are you sure you want to know?
Okay, so I get an idea. Often when I’m half asleep/dozing, in the shower or just doing something mindlessly. The ideas are usually specific scenes that I can see play out in my head, but occasionally it’s just a conversation/some dialogue. If I like it, I’ll try to force more by really focusing on it. If the muse wishes it, that tends to work. I’m rarely super excited about an idea that I’ll start working on it right away, and prefer to let it roll around for a while. See if it keeps popping up and more details are added. If it’s worth my time and energy, I suppose.
Once that happens, I’ll start writing down notes. I use OneNote to organize my fic ideas/plotting and have one notebook that’s simply for ideas; one section per idea and depending on the idea, it’ll just be a stream of consciousness (often peppered with questions for myself) or a bit more organized in different pages. Again, depending on how excited I am about the idea, this can be done in a day or it can take weeks/months where I’ll occasionally add some info.
Then, when I feel like I want to work on it some more, I’ll start to delve into the details. When is it set? What’s the beginning, middle and end? Which events do I want include but have no idea where yet? Is there specific dialogue or are there actions I want to maybe include at one point? If it’s an AU, AR or AT, I’ll start working on the differences from canon (who is in it, what’s their role, how does it deviate from canon). How long do I think this fic will be? I need to set a max number of chapters for myself, otherwise the story will just keep growing and I’ll keep adding stuff and in the end it’ll read like I just came up with more and more stuff simply so I wouldn’t have to end the story, rather than telling the story I wanted to tell in the beginning.
Anyway, I start creating pages for the chapters and fill in the few things I already know. At this point I often also involve my beta and discuss the fic idea with her. Everything from that conversation goes into the ‘brainstorm’ section and I’ll work on the questions and suggestions that arose during the conversation. Then, I’ll start focusing on filling up the chapters with general outlines. That can be anything from “scene 1 Sam telling Jack (Sam pov); scene 2 introspection about changes (Jack pov)” to a paragraphed summary or even a scene completely written out. Sometimes it’s just “some shippy stuff here”, to let me know that at one point I need to lighten it up or bring them closer together. I go over all the chapter pages that way, but don’t necessarily fill them all out. I also make one page with a chapter overview, which is usually the numbered chapters with one or two lines about the content so I can see in one quick glance which things need working on.
More thinking on the fic idea, sometimes even when sleeping and brainstorming with the beta usually follows, which in turn results in adding more details. The chapter pages get more specifics or maybe a “don’t forget to mention [character]”  or “now [# weeks] pregnant, mention that/include symptoms”. Also, depending on the story idea, I might need to do research. That can be canon/fanon stuff, but also scientific stuff, maybe a different language, create background information for original/rarely used canonical  characters, timeline, locations, RL world events, and so on. That also gets included in the notebook and, at some point, added to the relevant chapter.
Once my outlining is done and I feel comfortable to start  writing, I tend to just create a master document and start writing. Now, that’s not to say my whole outline is complete or that it’s something I must strictly adhere to. Additions and changes are made all the time, sometimes I’ll get stuck or realize a scene doesn’t work the way I envisioned it or the beta tells me something is missing. So, I go back to the notes and work on it. Then I go back to the fic and write, write, write.
Oh and I usually ask the beta to go over a chapter once I’ve finished writing it (or, if I’m stuck in a scene, I’ll ask her to look at it right away) and then I’ll go over the feedback, make changes, possibly discuss some of the things she mentioned, do some more editing and then I’ll go to the next chapter and write some more.
14.  How do you deal with self-doubts?15.  How do you deal with writer’s block?16.  How many drafts do you need until you’re satisfied with a project?17.  What writing habits or rituals do you have?
Hmm. I’m not sure? I do know that when I’m stuck I tend to make a fruit salad or get snacks out in the hopes of it resulting in the required brainpower to keep going.
18.  If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be, and what would you write about?19.  How do you keep yourself motivated?20.  How many WIPs and story ideas do you have?
The Favourites21.  Who is/are your favourite character(s) to write?22.  Who is/are your favourite pairing(s) to write?23.  Favourite author
I don’t think I really have a favorite author... I don’t like non-fiction, I always read fiction and often thrillers. Some of the books I always order and often reread are ones by Jilliane Hoffman and Ingrid Black.
As for fic, see my favorites/bookmarks on my profile on FFnet/AO3.
24.  Favourite genre to write and read25.  Favourite part of writing
Ooh, difficult to choose. I really love doing the research and plotting, but I think the best part of writing is ending up with the story you imagined before you even ‘put pen to to paper’. Also, managing to convey the emotions through the writing - like when a reader comments with how they also teared up, they had to stop reading a few times to catch their breath/get a grip on their emotions or were just overwhelmed by it all. That’s pretty neat.
26.  Favourite writing program27.  Favourite line/scene28.  Favourite side character29.  Favourite villain30.  Favourite idea you haven’t started on yet
I have quite a few fic ideas I haven’t started writing yet. Not sure I can choose one. But one that I’ve had for a long time, like ~6 years, and even started writing on (but then discarded that because it wasn’t a good opening) is for Woman In Blue. It’s a first-person fic, a style I actually kinda hate and would probably back-button right away if I saw one of my favorite authors use in a new fic... anyway, it’s Mark Carter in first person, writing about Sam (and to a smaller extent, Jack) and all the things he learned about her life after her death - she and Jack died in a blaze of glory, defending Earth against a Replicator attack that also prompted Disclosure.
The Dark31.  Least favourite part of writing32.  Most difficult character to write33.  Have you ever killed a main character?34.  What was the hardest scene you ever had to write?
There are so many scenes I’ve struggled with, most recently in Unmade Plans (chapter 8 specifically, that one really was a fight and I’ve rewritten it probably a dozen times) but the hardest was probably the Sam/Klorel scene in Only the Stubborn Survive. Those of you who’ve read the fic will know which scene I mean.
35.  What scene/story are you least looking forward to writing?
The Fun36.  Last sentence you wrote37.  First sentence or your current WIP38.  Weirdest story idea you’ve ever had
I’m not quite sure. A lot of them start out as weird ideas! The end result as you see them are soooo different. Maybe Consequences of Being Touched, because there were quite a few risque scenes in there?
39.  Weirdest character concept you’ve ever had40.  Share some backstory for one of your characters
The Rest of It41.  Any advice for new/beginning/young writers?42.  How do you feel about love triangles?43.  What do you do if/when characters don’t follow the outline?
It depends on the situation and the outline. I’ve thrown outlines out of the window at times because something else turned out to work much better once you actually reach that point in your story, but I’ve also rewritten a scene a dozen times before I got it exactly the way I wanted it in the outline.
44.  How much research do you do?45.  How much world building do you do?46.  Do you reread your own stories?47.  Best way to procrastinate48.  What’s the most self-insert character/scene you’ve ever written?49.  Which character would you most want to be friends with, if they were real?50.  [Other question—ask me anything]
Well, those were fun but also tricky! Guess I shouldn’t have skimmed the list before rb’ing, haha. No just kidding, I loved answering them. Thanks!

Hannibal — mostly top (mostly a sadist with a secret masochist side)
Will — mostly bottom (mostly a masochist with a secret sadist side)
Izzy — lawful bottom
Edward — chaotic switch
A few bonus muses, since you enabled
Clara — a bossy top
Iris — a repressed bottom
Jillian — no power dynamics whatsoever, instant turn-off, but positions do not really matter
Lucius — neutral top, give him an older, damaged man to fix by domming him

I made a post the other day about how many muses I have and I know none of you asked for a list but here it is.
Below is a comprehensive list of all of the muses I have. Most are usually available to roleplay with in IM, on k.ik, or via texting. Be warned, there’s a fair few. And this isn’t even the whole list. Those that are missing are the ones that I’m not willing to roleplay.
Be warned again, some of these characters are single-ship or not open to romantic relationships. Those that aren’t open to shipping are marked with an asterisk (*).

Day 1: Orlando to NOLA (639 miles)
The first leg of our journey took us from the glorified swamp that is Orlando to the glorified swamp that is New Orleans. Our first indicator that we had left the confines of Winter Park was when we ran into a truck on the turnpike with a bumper sticker that read "Isis Hunting Permit". While on the one hand we are pleased that this person went to the trouble of getting a permit, and thus showing a love for the LAW, we were deeply concerned and felt many internal questions arise. Did this individual find such a sticker at a store? Did they have it specially made? What in the entire heck? About three hours into the drive we stopped in Gainesville to fill up the ol' tank on the Sonata. While we were stopped, we ran around the car a few times and Ariel did some high kicks for good measure. Once back in the car, we had all grown a bit ~~~hongry. Luckily, because we are pursuing a #FitLife, we had sandwiches packed in a cooler. The fact that we even did this is so out of character and hilarious that we all had a good chuckle at our packed old lady lunches. I (Jillian) was sitting in the backseat so I had the power to distribute the sandwiches. I forced everyone to wait until 12 PM before distributing because it was important to me that we maintained some semblance of dignity even though the road does change people. Thus, we ate our sandwiches in 10 seconds flat at 12:00 on the dot and then got back to our busy day of sitting in the car. At this point the excitement of reaching Alabama was truly building, and when we finally crossed that border, the mood inside the Sonata was downright raucous. Many whoops ensued! Roll tide! Huzzah! Sweet home baby!!!! We could not maintain this high energy level for long, because post lunch is Ariel and I's first nap time of the day. So at this point we fell asleep and proceeded to remain unconscious for the entirety of the state, missing the 10 minutes of battleship scenery that we had been told to look out for. Alas. If you want to hear about that part of the journey you would have to ask Suzanne. When I arose from my slumber, we were in Mississippi. We stopped at a rest stop where people were incredibly friendly- which leads me to a central debate of this journey. Allow me to explain! Essentially, there are two ways to live your life. You can either assume that everyone wants to murder you, or you can assume that everyone is sane and simply want to be friendly. I am of the camp that everyone is a potential murder threat, my mom smiles at all strangers, and I don't think Ariel has actually noticed anyone looking at her in her entire life. But, I digress. Even I can admit that these Mississippians were quite nice and probably not aiming to kill me. A few short hours later we rolled into one of OUR FAVORITE PLACES ON EARTH, New Orleans! We cruised up to the Hilton, wrestled our bags out of the sonata, and all pretended not to know each other because we had booked a room for 2 people. It was very sneaky and sly. After the stunning success of this operation, we headed out to have first dinner at our favorite oyster spot in town, Felix's. The waiter thought we were such normal, moderate portion eaters, but he was WRONG because our 30 oysters were an appetizer. HA!!!! jokes on you!!! We had made reservations at the greatest restaurant, 3 Muses, but hadn't wanted to skip out on our fave oysters during our 16 hours in town, so a 2 dinner situation it was! Next we popped into a bar by 3 Muses to kill time before our rezzie. We ordered three glasses of Sauvignon blanc and it was undoubtedly the first time anyone had ever ordered that at the establishment. Oh well. The heart wants what it wants and we'd already had really strong bloody Mary's at Felix's. Anyways, no justification can really fix this so whatever-- judge as you will. Side note: one year I had the flu during this time of year. Bedridden and hardly able to keep my eyes open, the College World Series became the perfect pastime for me. You can literally fall asleep for 6 hours and MISS NOTHING, making it a great thing for a flu patient to get involved with. So anyways that marked the beginning of a soft spot in my heart for the CWS, and we were able to watch that while also enjoying some ~~jazz AND white wine! Wow! At 7:45 we positively skipped to 3 Muses because we love it so much and it hasn't ever let us down. The mac&cheese, tempura shrimp, bruschetta, and crab cake were so good I could cry thinking about it. Things like this truly make me feel that god has a plan for me. But then I also think about the time I fell into a fireplace and feel less convinced. Anywho. We made a quick stop at Pat O's where an old geezer tried to make moves on Suzanne. Ariel and I were having none of this, and sipped our hurricanes while angrily exchanging glances and making this man feel as uncomfortable as possible. The photographer at Pat o's came by to take our photo and (because we kept blinking from the flash) took so many pictures of us that the table next to us accused us of using Pat O's as our personal glamour shots. This was rather embarrassing. So finally, we crawled into bed and fell into a fitful sleep full of skeleton keys (in ariels case), missed alarms and hotel reservations (Suzanne), and whether Selena and The Weeknd are ACTUALLY dating (me).

🔮 Red
Send a  🔮 and your muse will get a peek into an event from my muses past.
The publishing company was small while the writing team was rather large, but this worked out for the last few months. Six or so stories in a science fiction magazine, publishing an issue a month with constant material, surely there was nothing that could go wrong. Nadia, under the name Jillian Stout, wrote a story of two for the magazine (under yet another pen name) but was mostly the tea and coffee girl for the lead editor.
On this day, she found him heavily engrossed in yet another manuscript, not yet taking the effort to edit anything. She gave him his cup of coffee with her usual smile.
“Sorry to disturb you, Mr. Baird.” she chirped. The editor didn’t lift his head, but gave her a small wave of the hand and a mumbled “Thanks, Jill” before continuing to read. Nadia hesitated, as normally he wasn’t so focused on a manuscript if he wasn’t editing. She could see his eyes rapidly moving line to line, so he certainly was reading. Not burning a hole into a single spot as he did with more ghastly horror stories.
Her curious gaze turned to a new pile of manuscripts on his desk, next to the opened envelope they were in. Four more, one with leafed corners showing they were plucked past to be read. And nearby a cover letter. Normally the editor didn’t save these, so Nadia gingerly picked it up to read it.
Nadia could read anything, no matter how boring, long winded or vile. This cover letter seemed to be all three, and was on the verge of making her eyes cross. In essence, “all of my stories are terrible and shouldn’t be published, but if they do then you’re not to change even one quotation mark or comma, but you should publish them anyway because all of your writers are terrible.”
“Well, doesn’t he sound like a chore?” Nadia huffed, watching at the editor stopped reading a moment to rub at his eyes. “Sorry, I just had to see. It’s not often your nose touches the paper like that.”
“Well...” He stopped as he looked back up to her. “Let’s just say he certainly finds a way to keep the story interesting. I just have to know where he’s going with this one.”
Nadia looked to the note again.
“He said not to change anything. Do you agree?”
“Well, I can publish one for certain.” He pointed to the one manuscript he had finished. “I think that will get a lot of people buying. But with this one, he might be over our reader’s heads.”
“What do you mean?”
“Look at this title.” Gingerly, he closed the manuscript to show her the title on the very front page. Nadia squinted to read the very tiny print.
“The Cult of..... my God, how do you pronounce that?”
“The best you can.”
“...well, how is it?”
“Once I’m finished, you can see for yourself.”
Letting her curiosity get the better of her, she picked up the previously read manuscript.
“...Dagon?” She wondered, hoping she was pronouncing it right. “Where are these words coming from?”
The editor took a long drink of coffee before rubbing his eyes again.
“Who knows. Jill, I need to keep reading. If you please.”
“Of course, Mr. Baird. Mind if I take this one to my desk to read?”
“Be my guest.”
So she did, and so she read, and just like her editor Edwin had trouble putting it down. Needing to see where the story was going and what happened next. All five manuscripts from Howard Phillips Lovecraft were purchased and published in Weird Tales magazine, much to other reader’s delights.
Almost a century later, Nadia is not in possession of this manuscripts as the man himself disgusted her. But she owns a first edition of the first collection of his stories, and hasn’t cracked it open in years. The first time she read his stories is still fresh in her mind, and is one of the first few times she had gotten goosebumps from words on a paper.

What's the muses here's strongest attack?
“Well... For me, it’d be hitting you with a frying pan.” Devan joked around as she waved the frying pan she was cleaning around a bit.
“I can technically poison you, or squeeze you to death...?” Val couldn’t help feeling uncomfortable about sharing this information.
“I can’t really do much. Just blast ya with loud music or scratch ya.” Xander demonstrated how sharp his nails were for a quick moment, and while they didn’t do much, they did leave some marks in the wall he scratched.
“I can blind you with paint, or drop an easel upon you. That’s about it.” Jillian, you could do better for self defense, but that’s better than nothing.
“I can drive one of my limbs into you, and potentially use it to split you in half.” Felixia had an eerie smile upon her lips as she shared this information.
“Call upon the gods to smite you. And if that doesn’t work? Then I have my own elven speed and strength.” Aleria, though she didn’t believe in killing another for needs outside of survival, could certainly fight if she had to.
“I’ve got magic. There are many, many things that I can do to any being, from burning them alive, to encasing them in ice.” Esmeralda, though normally quiet and meek, can certainly pose a threat to those who under estimate her. She is the daughter of a battle mage, after all.
“I’ve got a sniper rifle, and the strength of a vampire. What else can I say about either method?” And of course, Lily’s methods are the bluntest ones.

My psychic abilities expand everyday.
I wisely put a moderation on the number of commitments I pursue in order to ensure a greater chance of success (keeping in mind my fitness and udemy course andor other online class commitments year round, planning volunteer activities a max of 3 days out of the week, going to church, and my job search goals  applying for college admission for a 2nd bachelors degree program in public relations market andor advertising by october 1, 2017 or sooner with an eye on enrollment by september 2018 andor sooner in online courses)). Smart focused work (what others consider hard work) and consistent effort make a wide difference especially when it comes to my walking fitness goals.
I am creating  heaven on earth each day.
My mind is tuned to the higher planes of reality. I deserve abundance in all areas of my life.
Each Day I am building a stronger spiritual and celestial connection with my higher self and spirit ally team of the heaven worlds of divine love and divine happiness. I feel their gift of courage and bravery to me, along with other spiritual blessings to write and channel through celestial/heavenly influences and each day I become more intuitively adept at living my life and all areas of my life in alignment with my divine life purpose and destiny.
My ability to connect to the celestial forces of the heavenly realms are increasing daily. I use the blessing of this connection for greater creativity and wisdom in all areas of my life both present and future
I Call Upon What I Imagine To Be The Influence of Benevolent Spirits From the Heavenly Realms, my higher self, and my celestial spirit ally team for creativity in both my writings and all other areas of my life both present and future
