Castiel is so used to  being the observer,  that it takes him a moment to realise Dean is gazing back at him.

He takes a slow step back, remembering personal space, not quite sure how much of that he should be giving to make Dean comfortable. But he keeps his eyes on the human, piercing. Unsure of himself, on the inside, but on the outside perfectly unfazed.

He’s... Before all this. Before the Winchesters. Before getting Dean out of Hell. Cas used to be posted on Earth,  watching.  Before everything in Heaven became gradually more and more chaotic  ⸺  before God had left, he guesses. Some of his own memories are spotty; things missing, other things being blurry and tied together even when they were millenia apart... But he remembers centuries of just... human watching. Invisible, without a vessel, around the globe, watching. Occassionally reporting back, mostly just watching, in solitude... though it never felt like he was alone, so fascinated by humanity.

His siblings are wrong, he thinks. Claiming it was Dean who turned him  rebellious,  who made him  fall in love with humanity.  He’s always had questions and doubts; he’s always loved humans. It’s just that Dean was the first who got him to act on those thoughts. Perhaps they’re correct, then, in the end, his siblings.

Castiel gazes. Not concerned about any awkwardness in the unblinking eye-contact.

He wants to study Dean Winchester, to understand him, to understand himself.

the “yes, and-” approach & why it’s important in rp.

i think most people are at least somewhat aware of the yes, and- approach, but for those who aren’t, here’s a quick rundown of it. the yes, and approach basically started out as a concept for improv comedy (but it is extremely useful for rp as well and we will get to that). the approach is basically that no matter what your fellow actor presents to you, you shall not negate it, but instead roll with it. now why is this important in the rp community? well, i’m sure we’ve all been there at some point, on one end or another. two people are rping together, but the thread doesn’t seem to go anywhere, and might even get dropped due to it. and it might look a little something like this:

muse one reply:  “hey, you don’t look so good. are you okay?” muse two reply: “yeah, i’m fine.” muse one reply: “are you sure?” muse two reply: “yeah. thanks though.” muse one reply: “okay, if you say so. i’m carla, by the way. what’s your name?” muse two reply: “kate.”

you probably get the gist, that muse two does not really engage in anything. they never ask questions, they don’t build on anything, they just reply to what has already been said. this way, all the focus is put on muse two, and none of the focus is put on muse one. this will get very difficult for muse one to work with after a few replies. a better way for muse two to write replies here, might be “yeah, i’m fine. i just got off of work, so i’m just a little tired. thank you, though. how are you?” or when muse one asks if they’re sure “no, actually, i got into a struggle” or something like that. this way, you have your muse build on the story and drive things forward and give muse one something to reply to.

you don’t necessarily have to have your muse say anything either, if they for various reasons don’t usually talk much. have them do something. think something. react to something. show something. anything that the other muse can then respond to.

but the yes, and- approach isn’t only useful in character, but out of character too!

when you want to interact with someone or just get to know them, it’s a good idea to use the yes, and- approach here, too. an example below of what happens if you don’t, which i’ve personally encountered a lot is this:

mun one: hello! wanna plot? mun two: sure, i’d love to! mun one: cool!

here, mun one is asking to plot, but when the other agrees, they don’t come with any ideas themselves, nor asks if the other mun has any ideas. i’ve seen this kind of interaction keep going for quite a bit, with mun two trying to make some effort, and mun one continuing to give one-word responses. this will make mun two feel like all the plotting responsibility is put on them. instead of simply writing short 1-5 word responses like ‘cool’ and ‘sounds great’ and ‘i’m down’, try to engage by following up with some questions, like: 1) what would you be interested in? 2) do you have a wishlist? 3) what verse and/or au should we have our muses interact in? 4) should we do something pre-established or do a first interaction? 5) how do you think your muse would react to xyz?

this way, you’re actively driving the conversation forwards. this is important that both muns do. after all, roleplaying, talking, as well as plotting is a two-way street. you kind of need both to put in some effort to get anywhere.

Holy fire.  Unable to step away, Cas follows the fire catching on the holy oil, forming the ring of an angel trap around him in under a second. He’s getting  really, very tired of becoming trapped.  Really, it happens way too often, so while certainly alarming, it’s also... annoying. It’s sigils, it’s angel-proof handcuffs or chains, it’s a plain old ring of holy fire. But who, this time...?

Turning around to face his captor⸺  right, yes, this gives him pause.

❝ This is new, ❞    he offers, facing his double, unblinking, as he studies him.

The other Castiel is an angel, so if this is a trick, it’s a complex one; Cas can see people’s species to the range of human, demon, angel, other, with only a glance. He tilts his head, narrow eyes piercing, as he assesses. The double’s behaviour checks out, at least so far: if Cas spotted himself sauntering about, his first instinct would likely be to capture him, as well. The double’s also managed to do so, and he is not easy to lure into a trap.

Safe? Cas is never safe. Years, a captive of Cerberus, until... He never could’ve fought his own way out of those labs. He has no idea who’d attacked; mercs, probably, he’d seen a few krogan. So he had done something unlike himself and  ran away  rather than stay to fight (whoever was an enemy of Cerberus, he’d be on their side, mercenaries or no mercenaries), and that had probably saved him his life... Usually not one to flee, years of being a subject of experiments; it had started with the thresher maws on Akuze, yes, but long since evolved into attempted mind control. He has old scars and new scars circling around his head, mostly hidden beneath his hair, where Naomi had pierced his skull and dug into his brain over and over again. He has old acid burns along his shoulder blades from thresher maw acid, from Akuze. His body is littered with numerous others; repeated needle marks on his arms, old battle wounds from before it all... and fresh injuries, the skin of his chest partially shredded from where he’d been slashed with an omniblade, by the turians he’d been so kindly (he always knew it was a trap, but anything was better than Cerberus) transported into safer territory by... So much running...

This isn’t one of his assailants, though. Cas sits up (too fast, reeling), assessing his surroundings. This is someone’s home... there’s medigel and a bandage over his chest.

But he’s escaped from Cerberus; nowhere is safe, and no one around him is anything but collateral. They’ll come for him.
