TOP 10 CARTOONS ON FANFICTION.NET BASED ON NUMBER OF FANFICTION (1999-2022)

To make this bar chart race, all series titles in the Cartoons Section on November 29 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.

In 2000-2006, FFN used Miscellaneous Cartoons as a catch-all tag for all cartoons that didn’t have their own category yet. It was then renamed to Misc. Cartoons in 2007 before it was moved to the Misc. section in 2008.

Code Lyoko and Avatar: The Last Airbender were actually miscategorized at first and were found in the Anime section from 2004-2007 (2005-2007 for ATLA). I used their data from that section for those years.

In 1999, fanfiction weren’t divided into sections like Anime/Manga, TV, Books, etc. yet. It was just a small list of mixed fandoms.

Originally, the fanfiction list was sorted alphabetically too, but was changed to number of fics at around early 2013.

By November 2013, FFN started abbreviating numbers above 1,000 to K, so exact numbers aren't available for series with more than 1,000 fanfiction.

This bar chart was made with the assumption that the numbers listed in the Cartoons section are correct. I can't seem to get the same numbers for some of these categories when I go to the specific categories' page and toggle ratings, other filters, and language to All though... I'm not sure where the discrepancy is coming from. (And it’s not the crossover fic numbers that need to be added to serie’s total fics from what I’ve observed.)

Sometimes I wonder why code lyoko never had the fandom that ML has but then I remember the recycled animations, the sketchy scripting, the clumsy romances, the colossal foreheads, the high stakes video game-esque VR world with pre-selected character classes, time travel, the literal princess in a tower who’s in love with the man behind the machine and evil super computer that literally hacks things in the game and IRL with murderous intent (ie giant murder teddy bear, hacking a school bus to drive a bus full of kids into an electric plant) and then I REALLY wonder why Code Lyoko never had the fandom ML has

Code Lyoko is one of those shows where you step away for a bit, it comes back to you, and you think “it wasn’t actually that intense. I’m just misremembering, how I felt when I last saw it as a kid that’s all.” 

Then you watch it.

And no, no actually, I remembered correctly. They almost drove into a nuclear power plant, a military laser as pointed at them, they team up with the big bad to rob the government, the man characters have a near death experience every day, it’s very much implied that deaths on Lyoko is very similar to the real thing, literal men in black came after Aelita’s family, William lost months of his life, Jeremy was torturing himself to keep his friends safe on the other side of the screen, Odd almost drowned, Yumi and Ulrich were nearly boiled alive.

Also, you remember how hard the intro goes.

Coming back to the show as an adult I have a serious bone to pick with Franz Hopper actually, because when an AI in story goes rogue i am going to assume that they had reason to do so and that has more to do with the people that, you know, made them, and how they were treated by those people. As opposed to “￣＼(シ)／￣　must’ve been something funny in the code!” (My programmer in Christ, you put the code there) and hmmm, boy, sure does sound like you could’ve treated the sentient program you accidentally created a little better before he flipped out on you!

Also: So basically from what I can gather the reason the supercomputer and Lyoko exist in the first place is basically like Hal Otacon MetalGear Emmerich went “I just wanted to build giant robots like in my Japanese animes ): I had no idea they’d be used to make actual weapons of mass destruction!” And helped Solid Snake destroy Metal Gear Rex, but then after going into hiding also decided that a critical part of stopping the other Metal Gear tech he’d accidentally unleashed upon the world was building another, better robot with the same basic design plans and programming infrastructure.

Merry Christmas to everyone! Here’s my gift for @be3zbvb for this years @codesecretsanta ! I’m honestly happy with how this turned and I’m really glad to see Willodd in people’s wishlist hehe

I’ve done two other Willodd pieces for this annual event and I’m glad to add in another ! I hope you like the little comic, that’s technically a bonus as I was only planning on drawing a bridal style piece at first. Sadly the legs weren’t coming out how I wanted them to so I had to crop my original piece.
