If this isn’t Andúnië!.. And the interior also reminds me of Númenor. I think the Lords of Andúnië could be living in such a place.

It’s actually a 20th century Ancient Greek style villa turned museum in France. Please excuse my shitty phone camera photos. It’s only a tiny fraction of all the amazing decor elements, I wish I could share them all.

Not the master strategist now, huh Mairon?

finally got around to sketching out the valar mask concepts i made in february. i tried to toss up the character variation in body size and character a little bit. the final sketches are mostly inspired by japanese dress, though the original concepts were more varied.

also sketched out the faces beneath the mask because some of them were a little unnerving to look at xD

additional notes:

melkor’s dress has a little more western inspiration. i wanted him to look somewhat more “foreign” than the others. the side-mouth split in his mask is directly inspired by the original idea for the “mouth of sauron” in ROTK.

manwe’s dress is loosely based off sokutai, a dress for royalty. his little hat (a tokin) is less formal but i was going for a tengu look, closest relevant extension of the dukduk mask in the original sketch. 誠 (makoto) is a little bit of intentional shinsengumi irony.

orome’s original inspiration came from indigenous art of hares. the hare mask ended up looking a little immature, so i went for a more child-like character interpretation here.

aule also has a little bit more of a foreign influence, specifically a plague doctor mask. i will not explain that one xD

tulkas wears a sumo look complete with shinde, the zigzaggy paper strips used in shinto rituals to tie back his identity as a god

mandos wears a buddhist kesa garment. the umbrella headpiece was originally inspired by mushroom costumes, but changed for a kasa obake (umbrella demon) look. the dolls hanging from the umbrella are teru teru bozu

Oh my Eru! I've just opened tumblr to share a link to a short fanfic of mine where I speculated on Mairon's fate after the destruction of the One Ring and his path towards atonement (in an AU where Arda = Earth's past). And the first post I see is this one. What's up with the matrix?..

Anyway. I approached it somewhat differently but still, I'll take the liberty to use this reblog as an occasion to share the link.

P.S. I love the idea in the original post too and it would be great if someone explored it!

So I like to HC that after the One Ring is destroyed, Sauron’s spirit does end up back in Valinor to receive judgement from the Valar for what he did. He is given over to Námo and what Námo has him do as penance is to help care for the thousands of fëar that Sauron and his master tore apart.

LOTR fans: Why was Frodo so afraid of Sauron? He's just a glowing eye.

Silmarillion fans: No. NO. You don't get it. He's one of the Ainur, a mighty being created by Eru Ilúvatar. Specifically, his name was Mairon, meaning "admirable." He's a fallen Maia of Aulë, who was corrupted seduced to the dark side by Melkor, the original dark lord! Sauron is incredibly powerful, not to mention impeccably organized and logical. He was Melkor's lieutenant and right-hand man, after all! Plus, he can shapeshift. He turns into a vampire, a werewolf, a giant snake! He fought an Epic Rap Battle with Finrod and won! Lúthien and Huan kind of kicked his ass, but we won't get into those details. He took a fair form (read: sexy) among the Elves and seduced Celebrimbor, grandson of Fëanor, to his side! He probably seduced Ar-Pharazôn too!! Seduction LEFT AND RIGHT!!! *cue ten minutes of further rambling* LISTEN. Sauron is... He just IS. He's the best and the worst. That glowing eye? That's my magnificent bastard. He's e v e r y t h i n g to me.

Yesterday I had read the Akallabêth again, so I sketched some Númenorean. So, here is Amandil , father of Elendil, when he was young then when he was old, before he sailed for Valinor to plaid Valar for mercy (we don’t know if his quest was successful or not)

i find it frustrating when a character makes a decision (especially an emotional one) that makes sense for them as a person to make in a given situation, but because the decision has unforeseen ill effects of some kind, fandoms attribute this choice to the character’s stupidity. because it’s like. no!! they aren’t stupid, they are just trapped within their story and cannot see further forward in it than where and when they are!! they are not looking at this with the omniscient god’s eye view that you, the viewer who has already read this book or seen this movie, are where you know what happens after this and the consequences of every move on the narrative chess board!! they cannot make the decisions that you think you would, knowing what you know, because they don’t have all that insight!!
