i'd like to find a breathing pattern i don't have to think about

one where i don't have to force air into my disapproving lungs, who

given the chance

would rather cease to function.

i'm uncomfortable sitting upright, but i know

that if i lie down,

i will choke on the heart that has crawled into my throat.

the pins and needles in my limbs aren't painful

but they are there

and that's enough to activate the twitches, the shakes.

i got plenty of sleep last night but my eyes are tired

and looking for a reason to shut on their own,

to put me in a state of thoughtlessness.

i torture myself, you see

with an overwhelming sense of empathy.

i'm too conscious, for a brain that functions as if unconscious.

Please.

Put your hand back on my waist. Lean back in your chair and distractedly draw circles with your thumb. The touch of that hand is magic.

Please.

Don't take your eyes off of me. Watch me dancing, study my movements. Let me catch you mid-glance and smile.

Please.

Look at me the way you do. Say something so I can find any excuse to look at you, to look at those eyes. Get closer. Let the music grow louder so I have to put my head on your shoulder for you to hear me.

Please. Let there be more nights like tonight.

the horror of yesterday is over

but the signs of a struggle remain.

the cuts in my forearm from my own fingernails,

when they dug into my skin as i gripped it,

desperately searching for you.

my ribs still feel brittle from breathing too hard and too fast,

from trying to hold in my screams as you disappeared.

the most painful is the headache,

how i couldn’t sleep at all last night

knowing that the world has given you trial after trial.

i poured my heart out and you listened.

those legs,

dangling over the edges of buildings,

have returned to earth

but for how long?

don’t just show me the bright parts. i want to see the dark, too.

you can’t know a person only by their good times. if you keep shutting me out when things go downhill, i won’t ever really know you.

i’ve offered my support so many times and i wish that once, just once, you would fall on it. you don’t have to protect me from yourself. you don’t have to make me watch from a distance.
