he loved it. the thrill of the fight. the sounds of weapons clashing. the metallic smell of blood invading his senses. the uncertainty and unpredictability of the outcome. and his absolute favorite—a worthy opponent.

your village was suddenly attacked by treasure hoarders. it wasn’t uncommon, since you don’t exactly live in a secured or even rich area of liyue, but you find a way to live comfortably with your retired parents.

by the time tartaglia had made his way to where the action was occurring, he was watching you take on seven of the treasure hoarders all on your own. but it wasn’t just the way you won, no, it was much deeper than that. your skilled and swift movement had also caught his eye.

he noticed you hadn’t gotten a single scratch throughout the fight. you also finished each of them in a timely manner and without spilling any blood on your battered clothes.

your stance and quick reflexes tells him you are a worthy opponent. none of anything else matters. he doesn’t care about your living situation or where you got those skills from. all he’s focused on in that moment, is to convince you to fight him.

initially, you turned him down. he asked again and again, unwilling to let such a gem like you go. you are a diamond in a mine full of coal. you shined under the natural light of the sun and moon, and glistened in your watered reflection.

childe wouldn’t allow you to say no, so with his connections, he soon learned of how you lacked mora. which is what led him to bribe you into fighting him. with a roll of your eyes and a small huff, you hesitantly agreed, even after knowing of his title as the eleventh harbinger.

none of it mattered to you, as long as your parents lived and were safe.

to his surprise, childe has lost against you. he went back to his bank afterwards, beaten and bloodied, and replayed the fight in his head. how can he beat you the next time?

again and again, the harbinger bribed you just to clash with you. again and again, you won.

soon, it became an obsession. and for the first time in his life, tartaglia wasn’t looking forward to fight, but to see you. you had grown accustomed to him, too. he could tell by the glint in your eye, or the slight smile that only appeared when he came into your sight.

it was strange. was it because you were a talented warrior? somehow, you’d wormed your way into his cold heart. he can’t help but feel nothing toward people. perhaps it was because of the incident in which he was hired by the tsaritsa.

the lack of empathy he feels is what confused him. how can he feel this way for you? the small sparks that lit up in his stomach, the aching urge to grin when he thinks about you, or the way you make him so giddy. he couldn’t figure it out.

not until he decided to take you home, to snezhnaya. it took childe a lot of promises, begging, and convincing to take you, but you eventually agreed.

it wasn’t until he saw the way you interacted with his family—the people he cherishes most. home. you’re his home. the need to come back to you every night. the way he reminds himself to not be careless or wander too late.

the image of you worrying for him or crying because he didn’t come home one night mentally mars him. it’s worse than what he had experienced as a child.

you make him feel warm. like a cookie to a kid, but rather a permanent feeling. he still doesn’t understand what these feelings mean, but all he knows is that he will be safe for you. he will prioritize himself during work trips and fights.

he now knows that he loves you and that you give him life. you’re his family.

you guys may have a little too much to drink. and oh no!!!! you end up sleeping with each other. i guess, all that planning, trying to sabotage and murder each other made you really fucking obsessed.

point is, you cannot risk loving a man who’ll never prioritize you. that’s what you believe anyway.

he falls first, and he realizes it. surprising both of you, he makes a choice to send you flowers. the next time you see him, you scold him, and tell him to not pull shit like that. he’s confused, because to him, you did seem interested. you remind him that “just because we slept once, doesn’t mean i’m into you like that.”

but, our boy childe, doesn’t give up. (that was corny, i’ll never say it again. i sincerely apologize). he chases after you, because he’s really got nothing better to do with his life. you’re literally his new obsession.

so one day, he’s had enough, and he decides to ask you. “you can’t tell me you’re not the least bit interested in me, when you have to force yourself to look away, or when your cheeks warm up after my touch. i won’t believe you, so riddle me this, why are you lying to me?”

for once, in all the years you’ve known him, you can catch the small glimmer that appears in his usually dead, blue eyes. and you can tell, he is genuinely sad.

“i can’t be in a relationship with someone, where i’ll always be second choice.” this oddly confuses him, because, he himself, doesn’t know who’s first.

“huh?” he has this really adorable puppy face displayed, and is extremely confused.

“you idiot. i admire your spirit for always wanting to fight, but i’m unwilling to love you, if you won’t come home to me one day,” your eyes darted to the ground, and hands fiddling with one another.

“so that’s what this was about. are you doubting my strength?”

“yes, i am. you lost to the traveler, who held only a dull blade. isn’t that quite embarrassing?” of course, you were only half joking. he looks at you sheepishly before pulling you into a hug.

“i’ll always come back to you, i promise.”
