Frigga Thorneheart from Blood and Thorns

Something a bit different than I've been posting lately! Here's my girl Frigga in all her curly-haired glory! This was a bit of a portrait/lighting study that got a bit away from me, but you know, no shame. I wanted to see how far I've come in the last year, and considering the last portrait of her that I uploaded, I'd say the improvement game is strong 💖 It's important to look back on your progress sometimes, especially if you've been through a slump lately.

Anyway, Frigga is my heroine from my novel Blood and Thorns - she's a witch and heiress that falls for a member of staff. It doesn't go well for either of them, needless to say, but falling in love is rarely easy.

Could you give any advice for "descriptive" writing of any scene or action scenes or mapping out the scenery (Mountains, forests, streets etc) - i believe this is a struggle for Non-English speaking writers due to lack of vast vocabulary.

Common Scenery Description Tips

Vocabulary is clearly an important part of description, but it doesn’t have to be a limit. The most important thing about description in fiction is picking the right details to mention:

How does the details add to the mood of the story? A mountain ridge will be dark, gray and foggy if the overall mood is meant to be mysterious/brooding. In contrast, a mountain can be brilliantly snow-capped, lush green and “smiling down” upon the character if they’re out for a light stroll.

How are the contrasts/complementary aspects being brought out?

Are you using the five senses? You can even combine the senses, ie. blue ringing of the church bells

(If you have the POV character) what 

Some other tips for setting description:

Use similes and metaphors. Creative figures of speech always get my attention as a reader. 

Mention story-specific elements. For example, “The sky was the shade of Zoes’ eyes” or “the mountains looked like a group of trolls sleeping on one another” 

Be concise. Today’s readers don’t want to read paragraphs and paragraphs about one landscape. Outline the larger elements in the scene, their location and general mood. Add some details, then move on. 

If the same location appears multiple times, differentiate the description little by little as you write, instead of trying to lay out one scene in too much detail at once. 

That said, here are some helpful words/phrases:

Forests/Mountains

Color: bone-white, phantom-white, hazy gray

Sound: rumbling, booming grumbling, bellowing clapping, trundling, growling, thundering

Shape: crinkled, crumpled, knotted, grizzled, rumpled, wrinkled, craggy, jagged, gnarled, rugose  

Action: sky-punching/stabbing/piercing/spearing, heaven-touching/kissing, snow-cloaked/hooded/wreathed/festooned

Sloping sides, sharp/rounded ridges, high point/peak/summit

Majestic, gargantuan humbling, vast, massive, titanic, towering, monumental, mighty, vast, humbling

Mountains having faces, etc. 

Seas

Color: blue-green, crystal-clear crystalline, emerald, frothy, hazy, glistening, pristine, turquoise

Size: boundless, abyssal, fathomless, unconquerable, vast, wondrous

Sound: billowing, blustering, bombastic

Action: boisterous, agitated, angry, biting, breaking, brazen. Churning, bubbling, changing, brooding, calm, convulsing, enticing erratic, fierce, tempestuous, turbulent, undulating

Alluring, blissful, betwitching, breezy, captivating, chaotic, chilly, elemental, disorienting

Deserts

Sight: A landscape of sand, flat, harsh sunlight, cacti, tumbleweeds, dust devils, cracked land, crumbing rock, sandstone, canyons, wind-worn rock formations, tracks, dead grasses, vibrant desert blooms (after rainfall), flash flooding, dry creek

Sounds: Wind (whistling, howling, piping, tearing, weaving, winding, gusting), birds cawing, flapping, squawking, the fluttering shift of feasting birds, screeching eagles, the sound of one’s own steps, heavy silence, baying wild dogs

Smell: Arid air, dust, one’s own sweat and body odor, dry baked earth, carrion

Touch: Torrid heat, sweat, cutting wind, cracked lips, freezing cold (night) hard packed ground, rocks, gritty sand, shivering, swiping away dirt and sweat, pain from split lips and dehydration, numbness in legs, heat/pain from sun stroke, clothes…

Taste: Grit, dust, dry mouth & tongue, warm flat canteen water, copper taste in mouth, bitter taste of insects for eating, stringy wild game (hares, rats) the tough saltiness of hardtack, biscuits or jerky, an insatiable thirst or hunger

Streets

Dusty, fume-filled, foul, sumptuous, broad, bucolic, decayed, mournful, seemingly endless, empty, unpaved, lifeless, dreadfully genteel, muddy, nondescript, residential/retail

Bleach, flimsy, silent, narrow, crooked, furrowed, smoggy, commonplace, tumbledown, treeless, shady

The blacktop streets absorb the spring sunshine as if intent upon sending heaven's warmth back through my soles.

The streets absorbed the emotions in the air, the city as the steady and reassuring mother.

The streets were a marriage of sounds, from bicycle wheels to chattering.

In the refreshing light of early daytime, the streets had the hues of artistic dreamtime, soft yet bold pastels.

Cobbled streets flowed as happy rivers in sunlight.

Parties

Some extra tips for locations like parties, where lots of action is going around practically everywhere:

Focus on the important characters - where they are, who they’re with. 

Provide some overall description of the structure of the party scene (a pool, a two-storey house with yard?), then move on to details. 

Don’t try to describe everything. 

whirlwind of laughter and music, a symphony of joyous chaos.

It was a gathering that shimmered with the glow of twinkling lights and echoed with the rhythm of dancing feet.

The air was alive with excitement, buzzing with conversations and the clink of glasses.

Every corner held a story waiting to unfold, a moment waiting to be captured in memory.

It was a tapestry of colors, a mosaic of faces, each adding their own brushstroke to the vibrant canvas of the night.

Laughter cascaded like a waterfall, infectious and unstoppable, filling the room with warmth.

The night was a carnival of senses, with aromas of delicious food mingling with the melodies that filled the air.

Time seemed to slip away in the whirl of the party, moments blending into each other like colors on a palette.

The energy of the crowd was electric, pulsing through the room like a heartbeat, binding everyone in a shared moment of celebration.

It was a celebration of life, where worries faded into the background, and the present moment was all that mattered.

I think if you tried cornering Rosalind into a group cuddle, they'd skin you alive 😛 There are spicier scenes with each couple and plenty of fluff, and there's some heart-warming stuff in there too, but I think if you tried to make Razi and Rosalind touch in any way, they would in their joint attempt to murder. Maybe a group cuddle could be Razi-Frigga-Marcus-Rosalind. Or maybe you want chaos, I'm not your mom 😓

I have 4 main characters in Blood and Thorns, and they're all my children and I don't have a favourite (def. lying).

Frigga Thorneheart is the main character of the first book, and she's just the sweetest, femmyist lil thing. Physically little, she's like 5'2" lol. And she's supposed to inherit leadership of her coven, but she really doesn't want to. She wants to frolic in the grass and make flower crowns and do lesbian things! She's a prodigy and studied Illusion magic when she was away at school (which is thought of as very complicated and niche in this universe because of how it interacts with the brain), but she also picked up a herbalism hobby, surprise surprise. Unfortunatly, she's a people-pleaser, so she has a really hard time voicing her needs to anyone, something I have never ever ever had an issue with myself. Wouldn't know anything about that, nope. 😬

Razi Wood is the other main character and Frigga's love interest. So butch, so hot, makes incredible bread. She's non-magical servant, so Frigga's falling in love with her is sort of a bad idea. But Razi's a charmer, she's got the rizz (as the kids say apparently?), and she hates the bourgeoisie which is probably the hottest thing about her honestly. She's independent and lives by herself in one of the servants' quarters at Thorneheart Manor because her father passed a few years ago, but she's also guarding a broken heart and using that independence as a shield. Let's just say: trust issues, but we see some character development in the first book when she makes her decision. Razi is probably the best point of view to write from because she really is no-nonsense and doesn't put up with rich-people's bullshit, an attitude I admire and hope to exemplify one day.

Marcus Magnus-Monroe is the non-magical son of the coven's benefactor and is the person Frigga gets forced into an arranged marriage with. He doesn't know that, and if he did, he'd immediately call things off. He started out as an uncomplicated guy, and he's the sort of character you don't see very often because he had a wonderful childhood growing up, his parents were both great people and treated him so well, and he doesn't have any real trauma from before the age of like... 20? He's thought of by his social circle as a bit of an airhead/bimbo, and he got that reputation because of the way he behaved from the age of 20-23 (party boy, chronic man-hopping, here for a good time), but after his mother's passing at 23, he calmed down (after being smashed for a year) and got into the Family businesses. He's just a sweetie, the truest incarnation of the Golden Retriever Bisexual Boy there is, and he's so much fun to write.

Rosalind Bloodswell was the last character to be created for Blood and Thorns, and their creation fundamentally changed the story because they quickly became way too interesting for their own good. They were originally going to be a man, but I ended up putting them in the NB category for a lot of reasons. They're the Heir to Frigga's Family's Enemy Family, the Bloodswells which is a clan of necromancers. The family isn't popular, but not because of the death magic. They're thought of as conspiracy theorists, which Rosalind has done their best to distance themself from. They're the quiet, withdrawn type, the dark horse of the story, but behind the prickliness and the concrete walls they've constructed to keep everyone out, Rosalind is a sappy romantic that has been in love with a certain Golden Somebody for years. Rosalind is the reason Blood and Thorns has become a series rather than a one-off book, and out of my shorts, 90% of them feature Rosalind in some way.

This group of characters occupies approximately 90% of my brain's ram. A lot of that has to do with the fact that they embody two of my favourite relationship tropes (femme/butch and sun/moon), but I think it's such a fascinating group of opposites that I can't help coming back to them over and over! I just finished the second draft of Blood and Thorns: Restructure, which centers on Rosalind and Marcus the way that the original one focused on Frigga and Razi, so after I take a little break, I'm going to write the first draft of the third one: Blood and Thorns: Otherworld - which will feature the four of them equally (I hope). I'm excited to explore different aspects of these characters (Rosalind alone, Frigga when she was at school) as well as dynamics between characters that I've barely been able to glimpse at (Razi, the anti-bourgeoisie commoner, will have to team up with Marcus, one of the richest men in all of Ozelea (the country), and Frigga's friendship with someone we know very little about from school).

it’s actually so funny how challenging it is to write bona fide graphic, horny smut. like people don’t give smut writers enough credit. you are constantly running out of words to describe the same 2-4 body parts and same 4-6 motions. you are constantly attempting to do interesting and dynamic things in the prose with this extremely limited set of words. you are looking at your prose for the nastier bits and wondering if it actually sounds hot or if it just sounds goofy. you are then toning down your prose and then wondering if it now sounds tasteful or if it’s just boring. you do ctrl+F for the word “cock” and there are 37 instances of it in the doc but you hate the 1-2 acceptable synonyms so there’s nothing much you can do about it

Y'all.

Blood and Thorns: Restructure's second draft is done. Holy hell. I've been working on it for a year, and it's finally done!!!! Now I can let the thing rest for a bit!! I have a bunch of smaller projects I'd like to finish off (I have a lot of side fics I'd like to finish if I can)....

And then, because I don't know how to take a fucking break, I'm going to start pre-writing for the next one: Blood and Thorns: Otherworld - but not for at least a month!!! NO.

Anyway, second pass of Restructure got done today, and I'm really fucking proud of myself because it had some pretty major issues. And it's a big book. It's 135k words. The first one ended up at 120k, but I'm going to need to add a bit more before the second one is done. Still, I'm pretty sure it's not going to need gutting like the first one did.

In Frigga’s silence, Sapphire regained her composure, her face returned to neutral and the glow of her magic receded. “Well, Frigga, if you think you’ve cracked how to dissolve our contract, you’re welcome to try seeing as you’d rather sneak around behind my back than discuss these matters with me.” “No, Auntie, of course no-“ “And,” she leaned in a bit closer, the lights flickered again, her rage nearly visible around her, “if you’d like to run off with that vampiric parasite, or anyone else, I suggest they never show their face here again. It’d be a shame if someone went missing.” “Auntie, please, don-“ The lights dimmed and Sapphire’s rage began to manifest as electric blue static peeling off her in waves. “This coven depends on me and my decision is final. You’re going to respect that.” She roughly clamped Frigga’s right arm with a faintly glowing hand, her nails digging into the faint brand that lit up blue at the touch. “This isn’t going anywhere and you are going to follow through with it. If I hear any more about this foolishness, if you put one more toe out of line, I will lock you in your room and bind your magic until the day of the Heir ceremony, understand?” (Blood and Thorns, Chapter 14)

@scifimagpie asked about "Obsidian" and "Mercury and Venus", and my dear, let me tell you a bit about these.

"Obsidian" is a short story detailing a ritual that took place a week after Rosalind Bloodswell's 21st birthday, the secret ritual that allows the members of that family to more closely work with the dead. It's called obsidian because their father gives them a lucky obsidian pendant beforehand. I haven't gotten to the ritual itself yet, but what I do know is that Rosalind almost dies during it as the ritual involves taking in poison to kill the body whilst being spiritually anchored to it. In order to survive the ritual, they have to have a rock-solid strength of will, and they almost don't make it because they falter when they must identify themself to the spirits. I'm looking forward to working on this short, and hopefully I'll be sharing it sometime this year. I'm hoping to share more of my shorts, actually, I have so friggin' many.

Mercury and Venus takes place in an AU that I wrote - same cast of my characters, but the setting is much more modern. Mercury and Venus are actually Razi and Frigga, by pair of lesbians, and this novelette shows their relationship's rocky start. In this AU, Razi is a bartender in a club/brothel Rosalind works at, which is where she meets Frigga when she attends a friend's birthday party. Several weeks later, they meet again and, right when Razi thinks things are taking off, Frigga shuts her down and leaves. This is an AU I never intended on seeing the light of day, but if I have enough support, the erotic tale of Mystic could surface. 😛 But probably behind some kind of paywall because in the 180k words and 21 chapters.... a significant number of those words are just porn. Like... 17/21 chapters have Scenes in them. And Mercury and Venus is no exception. Any short in this universe is basically required to have a little bit of spice. :D

In Frigga’s silence, Sapphire regained her composure, her face returned to neutral and the glow of her magic receded. “Well, Frigga, if you think you’ve cracked how to dissolve our contract, you’re welcome to try seeing as you’d rather sneak around behind my back than discuss these matters with me.” “No, Auntie, of course no-“ “And,” she leaned in a bit closer, the lights flickered again, her rage nearly visible around her, “if you’d like to run off with that vampiric parasite, or anyone else, I suggest they never show their face here again. It’d be a shame if someone went missing.” “Auntie, please, don-“ The lights dimmed and Sapphire’s rage began to manifest as electric blue static peeling off her in waves. “This coven depends on me and my decision is final. You’re going to respect that.” She roughly clamped Frigga’s right arm with a faintly glowing hand, her nails digging into the faint brand that lit up blue at the touch. “This isn’t going anywhere and you are going to follow through with it. If I hear any more about this foolishness, if you put one more toe out of line, I will lock you in your room and bind your magic until the day of the Heir ceremony, understand?” (Blood and Thorns, Chapter 14)
