📽️ Blast from the Past (1999)
This movie actually is a blast from the past. I grew up hearing my family members quote this movie and having those quotes become part of my vernacular as well. It’s kind of crazy watching a movie that you grew up with and seeing how different it is from what you remember. This is such an original movie, like I’ve literally never seen anything else like it. The premise is unique and well-executed. It’s funny and cute and so much fun to watch. I definitely recommend this one.
Sex/nudity: 4/10 (a lot of suggestive dialogue — all of which I missed as a child, kissing, revealing clothing)
Language: 5/10 (IMDb says 1 f-word but I know there were 2, not a ton of other stuff)
Violence: 1/10 (some punches thrown)
Overall rating: 7/10

📽️ Say Anything (1989)
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I love John Cusack. I don’t what it is about him, but he is one of my favorites for sure. I really liked him in this. I liked that there was closure on several of the story lines, but I did feel that it ended somewhat abruptly. There were definitely some cheesy parts as in all rom coms, but this one is definitely a classic.
Sex/nudity: 3/10 (some conversations about sex, kissing, implied sex, nipples seen through a shirt)
Language: 4/10 (one f word, several instances of other swear words)
Violence: 1/10 (a nose bleed resulting from sparring)
Overall rating: 7/10

📽️ Encino Man (1992)
Of course, after watching Son in Law, I had to watch Encino Man. Honestly, though, it was a hard watch. Pauly Shore was hilarious in his normal stupid way, but other than that the movie wasn’t super great. Most of it aside from Pauly Shore wasn’t very funny, and I just wasn’t a huge fan. This movie did, however, expand my vocabulary. I don’t know if they were words from the 90s or just words Pauly Shore made up, but there were definitely some new ones to me. Also, I enjoyed seeing young Sean Astin; I didn’t know he was in this when I chose it. Brendan Fraser’s part was okay, but I thought it was a little overdone at some points. Overall, this movie wasn’t horrible, but it’s not going to be on my favorites list either.
Sex/nudity: 3/10 (kissing, some sexual references, several very clear references and gestures to female breasts)
Language: 2/10 (not horrible in this department, some cursing, a lot of slang that didn’t make a whole lot of sense)
Violence: 2/10 (a couple fights with some blood shown)
Overall rating: 5/10

📽️ Son in Law (1993)
This movie was my discovery of Pauly Shore, and I don’t regret it one bit. This movie is totally ridiculous, but I love it. It’s hilarious. Entertainment is based on a willingness to suspend disbelief in order to enjoy a piece. That’s definitely what you have to do to watch this, just because it’s so unbelievable. It’s not the most well-made movie; it’s not a blockbuster. But comedies aren’t usually known for their cinematography. Just relax, don’t take it seriously because you literally can’t, and enjoy it.
Sex/nudity: 3/10 (kissing, talk of sex, a bare butt, woman in a bra, some crude comments)
Language: 3/10 (nothing worse than sh*t but there is quite a bit of crude language)
Violence: 2/10 (a couple fights with some blood shown)
Overall rating: 7/10

📽️ All Quiet on the Western Front (2022)
Maybe I’m just not looking in the right place, but I don’t see many World War I movies making an appearance. World War II is my favorite movie/book time period, but I don’t really know much about World War I. Partly for that reason, I really enjoyed this movie. “Enjoyed” is almost a bad word to describe how I felt, mostly because it wasn’t necessarily an enjoyable movie. I mean, unless you enjoy seeing death and destruction. But this kind of movie isn’t really made to enjoy, it’s made to educate and enrapture. It also helped me see things from a German perspective. I mean, this guy just wanted to fight for his country. We Americans always see the Germans as the bad guys in the World Wars, so it was really eye-opening to see it from the other side. I’ve never been in battle, but I could feel the soldiers’ terror and despair. This is definitely a movie to watch.
Sex/nudity: 1/10 (men sitting on toilets with nothing showing, talk of breasts)
Language: 3/10 (one or two f words, not a ton else)
Violence: 8/10 (can’t list everything but it’s very graphic)
Overall rating: 8/10

📽️ Red Notice (2021)
This movie was predictable, but it was still pretty good. Ryan Reynolds is not super believable as an action-type character, but he’s not the worst I’ve ever seen. I just feel like he plays the same character in every movie he’s in, but I guess that’s part of his charm. My problem is I’m not sure if it was supposed to be more of a comedy or more of an action movie, and then whether it was supposed to be totally serious or not with the fight sequences and stuff. I don’t know if that makes sense to anyone but me, though. Anyway, I would say it’s worth the watch, but don’t expect something like James Bond.
Sex/nudity: 3/10 (kissing, multiple innuendoes and sexual references as well as talk to genitalia)
Language: 6/10 (one full f-word and three partials, many uses of sh*t, some others)
Violence: 5/10 (lots of fights, not much blood if any)
Overall rating: 6/10

📽️ Benny & Joon (1993)
I watched this movie years ago because it featured the song “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles).” I honestly couldn’t remember any of it, so I wanted to watch it again. I have to say, I don’t really remember much of it this time either. It’s a very strange movie with very strange characters. It’s also interesting, though, and every actor does a great job portraying their characters. With the characters who they are, it can’t have been easy for Johnny Depp or Mary Stuart Masterson. While it’s a strange story, it’s also a sweet story. I’m not going to say everyone should watch this, because it is definitely not a movie everyone would like. But it’s a movie that can teach compassion and caring for others.
Sex/nudity: 2/10 (kissing, implied sex)
Language: 4/10 (one f-word, not a lot of other stuff but it’s there)
Violence: 2/10 (blood shown in a movie scene, some violent outbursts)
Overall rating: 6/10

📽️ Enola Holmes 2 (2022)
I think I liked this one better than the first, but only because it explored more of Enola’s relationship with Tewkesbury. The two movies are pretty similar in quality. The first one did a lot of setting up, so I also enjoyed this one more because I already knew the main characters. I really enjoyed both movies, though. I know a third one hasn’t officially been confirmed, but I hope there is another one because these are good movies.
Sex/nudity: 1/10 (kissing)
Language: 1/10 (mild British exclamations)
Violence: 4/10 (a little more gruesome than the first one, several fights, some deaths on and off screen with bodies shown)
Overall rating: 8/10

📽️ Enola Holmes (2020)
I didn’t actually watch this movie until after the second one was out. I was refusing to watch it on principle, although now I don’t even know what that principle was. I enjoyed this movie quite a bit more than I thought I would. I thought it was going to be another super corny, super woke Netflix movie. I was surprised to find I genuinely enjoyed it. I rarely try to figure things out as the movie goes on because I love the big reveal at the end. I do agree with some that have said there was too much going on, but I think it all works out in the end. I would watch this again.
Sex/nudity: 1/10 (breasts shown in an art book briefly)
Language: 2/10 (nothing too bad but there is some)
Violence: 3/10 (there are quite a few fight scenes but nothing too graphic, mild blood)
Overall rating: 7/10

📚 Blue Moon by Linda Windsor
When I read this series in high school, this was definitely my favorite of the three. I think I still like this one the best, but I have to say that this series isn’t really my style anymore. Not that I didn’t like them this time through, they just aren’t necessarily what I would choose now. Anyway, this book is the most romantic of the three, and the most exciting. I also like that the female lead is the sibling this time rather than another brother. I also like this one because it wraps up the whole series and follows up with the brothers at the end. But it can be read as a stand-alone, and the ending isn’t confusing. I would definitely recommend this whole series, even if you only read them once.

📚 Fiesta Moon by Linda Windsor
This is the second book of the series, and this one follows the incorrigible, bad boy brother who is basically forced to go to Mexico to help repair a broken down hacienda. He’s doing this for a children’s home his family company supports, and the director of the home is, of course, the woman he ends up falling for. This one is better than the first book. The danger and mystery in this one seem more real. I wasn’t a huge fan of the way the relationship developed, but other than that I don’t have any qualms with this one. It’s sweet, well-written and very easy to read.

📚 Paper Moon by Linda Windsor
This is the first book in a three-book series, but each book can be read as a stand-alone. I first read these books when I was in high school, and I would randomly think about them but I couldn’t remember what they were called. I finally googled what I could remember about them and found them. They are not exactly what I remember, but that’s my fault, not theirs. The three books are about three siblings who each find love in Mexico. This first one is about a single mom and dad who both go on their daughters’ school trip only to meet each other and fall in love. It’s a very sweet story, but there’s also some suspense and crime going on so there’s some action besides just the love story. The author’s writing style is fairly simple, straightforward and easy to understand, a fact which helps the book be more enjoyable as the reader isn’t tripped up by lofty language. I would definitely recommend this book for a light, fun read. If you’re looking for something super deep, this isn’t for you.

📽️ How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)
I can honestly say that I have never seen another movie like this one. Not only is it a unique storyline, but it also has the perfect cast. I could watch this over and over again, and I have. The second-hand embarrassment, the cringey moments, the sweet heartfelt scenes — it’s all perfect. I really really like this movie.
Sex/nudity: 3/10 (kissing/making out, talk of genitalia, talk of sex, no sex scenes but sex is implied)
Language: 3/10 (a lot of sh*t, no f words, God’s name several times)
Violence: 1/10 (man is punched with minimal blood)
Overall rating: 9/10

📽️ Mr. Harrigan’s Phone (2022)
The trailer, along with knowing it was based on a Stephen King story, made this movie look promising. I’m usually a fan of thriller, especially with a creepy supernatural element like a dead guy calling someone. Unfortunately, this movie didn’t hit that mark. I kept waiting for something good to happen or for there to be some action, but nothing happened. It ended up being a boring movie with an anticlimactic ending. This movie was disappointing.
Sex/nudity: 1/10 (male in the shower, no genitalia shown)
Language: 3/10 (one f-word, relatively little else)
Violence: 4/10 (nothing crazy, several deaths with not much shown, kid gets beat up with some blood shown)
Overall rating: 3/10

📽️ Catherine Called Birdy (2022)
This movie was absolutely bonkers, and I loved it! It actually addressed some important themes while being funny at the same time. I will be the first to admit that this movie is not for everyone, but it is definitely my kind of movie. Bella Ramsey did a great job as Birdy, and Billie Piper and Andrew Scott were amazing as her parents. This movie is great!
Sex/nudity: 3/10 (a few references to sex, Birdy walks in on her parents but nothing is shown)
Language: 1/10 (not much that I remember)
Violence: 1/10 (Birdy gets hit on the hands with a stick)
Overall rating: 9/10
