Studyblr Culture: How the Internet Changes Students’ Perception on Studying
Hello everyone! My name is Sarabel and I’m a student in BA Creative Writing. In one of my GE subjects (English 13: Writing as Thinking), we’re asked to write a paper about how technology changes people, their way of life, methods, etc. Afterwards, we have to write a summarized version of it to submit to the Digital Disruption Asia-Pacific Writing Competition 2018 hosted by The New York Times.
For my paper, I’ll be writing about Studyblr. But since there hasn’t been much research about it, I will be conducting a survey to gather the data I need. It will be a tremendous help to me if you can spare a few minutes of your time to answer it. You only need to be a current student (high school, college, or graduate) and have an active studyblr to be qualified to participate in the survey.
The survey will ask about your study habits and methods before and after studyblr, your post-making process, the people you’ve interacted with in the community, your general views on Studyblr, and some basic socio-demographic questions.
Answer Survey
If you don’t have the time to answer, please at least reblog this post to help me gather more respondents. Thank you!
If you have any questions, feel free to dm me or send me an e-mail @ [email protected]

how to smash oral presentations
okay so I’m a former competitive public speaker and debater, still competing in slam poetry and I smash oral presentations. I get As every time, here’s what I do;
PREP- you are never going to ace an oral presentation if you don’t have good content. Start research early and research extensively. This also means practicing presenting your oral before the day.
CONTENT- to know that to include in your oral, start with 3 major speaking points about your topic and three subtopics per major point. Having three points per key idea helps give your presentation an umph and makes it feel complete.
STANCE- How are you standing? Are you hunched over your notes, barely looking at the audience? Don’t. Stand up tall, shoulders back and project. Look around the classroom, engage with the audience, move around if you have to but be careful you’re not repeating arm movements as you talk. It’ll distract people from what you’re saying.
VOICE- p.r.o.j.e.c.t I once got a 98% in a philosophy oral by having good content AND I would change my voice when I could tell people weren’t paying attention. Speak louder, softer, do voices if it’s relevant. Make a joke! GET THE AUDIENCE ENGAGED!
CONFIDENCE- People will be more likely to agree with your speaking points if you act like you know what you’re saying. Before your presentation, go to the bathroom, lock yourself into a stall and powerpose. Power posing is back straight, shoulders back, hands on hips and chest to the sky. You can look it up if you want! Give yourself a pep talK!!! you’ve got this!! now go out and act like it!
NOTES- pallllmmmm carddds. NEVER and i mean never, bring in a sheet of paper. Trust me. always use palm cards if any notes are used, write in short dot points with the key idea and don’t read off them. You should barely need them!
POWERPOINT- don’t stand in front of your powerpoint. Major rookie move. Only include your main points, examples, graphs or data or videos on your powerpoint. Don’t write your entire speech. You want your info to be short and easy to read so that people are listening to YOU! and not just reading your powerpoint.

tips for saving money on food- as students
buy in bulk from middle eastern stores I buy all my legumes, lentils and such from middle eastern shops. This helps me make filling meals for cheap
make soup. Honestly when I’m in a bind… SOUP! Very easy with simple ingredients you can make tomato soup, pumpkin soup, sweet potato soup. Use some veggie stock without MSG and make some tasty stuff!
buy fish tinned! honestly so much cheaper than the stuff in the deli. You can get tuna, salmon and a couple of other types I’m fairly sure.
buy your veg from the frozen section I buy a massive variety of frozen veg and defrost them to bulk my meals~
ask and find out when your local shops start their sales honestly, it’s worth it. Ask the people who work there when things go on sale, what will go on sale.
for fresh fruit ask to buy in bulk bananas about to go off in the back! Life saver. They’re most likely going to throw that stuff out! Ask if you can buy it on sale, freeze anything you don’t use immediately and use in smoothies, pancakes, banana bread!
grow your own veggie patch life saver. Whether you only have space for herbs or you have an entire garden, plant whatever you can!
buy prepackaged food before closing if you have to buy from food vendors, eg. a bakery, Chinese etc, buy at the end of the day before closing so that stuff has gone on sale.

college how to : securing rec letters
Tumblr media
uh basically what i did to get recommendation letters secured for grad school + study abroad? this is like for ….anxious people lol? i researched for HOURS on how to actually go about getting recommendation letters….but there weren’t too many tips for the actual process, just ‘oh! get recs from professors who love you’ haha…
Before you even think of asking…
Do your research: Thinking about graduate school? scholarships? studying abroad? Fulbright? anything that you have to apply to, you’re going to be asked for recommendation letters. this most definitely did NOT occur to me, so I probably added more stress to my plate than I needed to. But yeah….you can’t just get in on your own merit for most things. You need people to vouch for you in the form of rec letters, and most times your applications won’t even be considered without them. PLUS when you DO ask for a recommendation letter, you want to show that you have done some research into whatever you are applying for, and share some of that information with your potential recommender.
Prepare statements of purpose and academic CVs: In order for your recommender to write a letter, they need some background on, well, you! Even if you talk to them often, it’s still nice to have your specific ideas and goals about the program ready and laid out. Plus, they may not know of all your academically-related accomplishments, so detail them in that CV! It’s basically a resume in a different format, but if you get it done early, your recommender may even go over it and send you back suggestions.
Who to ask….
Quality of your recommender: Honestly, you can’t just get any old recommendation letter and hope that’ll fly. Oftentimes when recommendation letters are provided as a side thing (at least for college), they can be pretty basic and impersonal. It’s best to get a letter from someone who has had 1-1 conversations with you where you shared about who you are, not necessarily just what you do. That can add a lot to your letter.
So many options….: It’s actually really okay to ask if your potential recommender feels they can write a strong, POSITIVE letter for you. You don’t want a petty supervisor (or someone with which you butted heads or got a less than stellar grade in their class) writing your letter. If they can’t immediately say yes, then they won’t be golden. Once you weed out the so-so choices, you can focus on the strong candidates.
HOW to ask...
Building rapport: it comes to a point where you really do have to put yourself out there if you want your professor to remember your face. I’ve gone to events and seen professors (future, former, or current) present, and had little small talk convos just to say ‘hey! I’m your student!’. just walking around campus I might run into one, so that’s always a good time to ask questions about things in general (I would save assignment related questions for office hours!). I always email my bilingual professor every week because he doesn’t post the assignment slots ahead of time, and let him know ‘hey! I’ve finished my assignment and want to submit’! Not only is that helping him keep things running, but he’s realizing ‘wow…she’s always finishing her assignments early’. bonus points! I usually spend half an hour in office hour sessions, talking about school, asking questions about their research, going off on tangents …it’s okay to treat your professor as a mentor, they want to see you succeed, so show that you are putting that effort in! It’s also a good chance to practice your language skills with your language professors…
Schedule a talk ahead of time: When you actually ask for rec letters… do NOT just drop in! Show a level of professionalism by emailing your professors ahead of time and asking if you can speak with them regarding grad school/study abroad program, and ask them a question. :-] That’s what I did anyway lol! I didn’t ask for my rec letter officially over email, but face to face.
Set them up: Discuss the program(s) you are interested in, and give them enough detail so that they have a general idea of what you want to get them involved in. Don’t just sit down and ask ‘Can you write me a rec letter?’ but show that you are prepared! If you need to, provide them with pamphlets now.
Just ask!: Okay, now you can literally ‘just ask!’ When I had to ask for rec letters from one of my professors, my CURRENT professor was in his office just chatting with him! That was a bit nerve-wracking, but I just spit out my request before my anxiety took over (I totally wanted to run out of the office). It didn’t really matter that we had an ‘audience’, as he accepted with no problem!
What to do after…
APPLY!: Now that you’ve asked, you have to follow through! Start working on your application if you haven’t done so already, keep researching the process, and keep your recommenders up to date with deadlines, reminders, and additional information you discover. For me, I have to keep my professors up to date with my writing samples, statements of purpose, application process, and deadlines for my study abroad program. Whatever I need to know, they need to know!
um, I hope this is helpful! I can’t really cover the ‘okay I’ve applied and they’ve sent their letters in’ parts because…that hasn’t happened yet! I only asked two weeks ago, but I’ll definitely add onto this post once I can talk about the end results. :-]

8 of my favorite youtube channels for studying
these are just the people i personally watch, so please feel free to add some if you have more!
1. John Fish. John is a computer science student at Harvard that mostly makes videos on how he studies and stays productive. He’s a very smart guy, is interesting to watch, and seems to have studying down to a science!
2. The School of Life. The School of Life makes all kinds of videos on a wide array of topics such as psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, history, etc.! A lot of my professors recommend to watch their videos while we study.
3. Studyign. I’m sure we’re all subscribed to her, but it’s not a complete list of the best youtube channels without adding her in. Sareena has all kinds of videos on study tips, how to’s, etc.!
4. Hannah Like Science. Hannah is a freshman at Dartmouth and makes videos mostly on college applications advice. If you’re co 2019 definitely check her out! Her older videos have more to do with science, so if you enjoy curiosity-style videos, check her out.
5. Ted Talks. There are hundreds of Ted Talks out there on how to increase productivity, if you haven’t seen any yet definitely watch them! some have changed my life.
6. Crash Course. I’m sure you’ve seen one of these before, but Crash Course saved me when I took AP Psych. Teachers love to show them in class, but even if they don’t, watch them in your own time! You’ll learn a lot, I promise.
7. Flipping Physics. If you are taking physics, I guarantee this guy has a video for any topic you’ll learn. He’s a teacher, so he explains things in a way to engage students and help them understand.
8. Khan Academy. I used Khan Academy throughout high school to help me study for math tests. Their videos helped me a lot, especially in calculus! However, there are videos explaining a wide variety of topics.
again, these are just the ones I watch on a regular basis, i know there are hundreds of other studyblr youtube channels that I didn’t mention, so please reply with some that you guys love (i’ll check em out!).
thanks for reading! x
