๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐: ๐ฑ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ฒ๐๐๐
Mar. 5. 2024
I have PMDD and it affects all parts of my life, including my writing. S
SO, I am going to write a book about FMC with PMDD, and I'm only going to work on this project during my luteal phase.
Why?
#1 -- I can't seem to work on any of my other projects during those two weeks. I get frustrated when unproductive. I think this will take the self-imposed pressure off.
#2 -- I think I'll write from a very unique perspective. I only recently became aware of this syndrome and I've never paid attention to my moods when writing. Now, this might end up being a pointless-unfeasible-dumpster-fire-pile-of-unpublishable-garbage.
Either way, I think it might help me adjust and understand myself better.
This is my vision (the bones):
Slice of Life
Early-20s
Fish out of water
Short -- 50k Max
Timeline -- 1 Menstrual Cycle (About a month)
Plot trigger: FMC is called a 'basket case' by a loved one
Foreseeable Obstacles:
Writing during my luteal phase is extremely hard. It's a struggle to even sit at my desk. It's difficult to get work done for school and my other projects. BUT, it's also a time where I think I need an outlet the most.
This means it will take a while for me to get a first draft. I am hoping to have one by mid-Fall.
I worry about the tone of my story. I've written a few emotional pieces but I've never published them. I can imagine that this one will put me in an emotionally vulnerable position. BUT, I realized recently that I have this syndrome, and it has forced me to confront a few things. It's not widely talked about in the public space so that exacerbates the loneliness and sense of impending doom. I know that others have felt the same way I do, so I want to write something for us. And I think I need this.
That said, my tone might start off angsty but trust, there will be a happy ending. There just has to be.
So I'm going to be using this post, reblogging my progress. I'm gonna start outlining soon. Maybe I'll post the first chapter or some snippets once I have things together.
Yeah... I've never shared something like this before. I'm not used to thinking out loud, at least on the internet.
Cool.
I'll try not to delete.

๐ฉ๐จ๐ช๐ฒ๐บ๐ป๐ถ๐น๐
During undergrad, I majored in Screenwriting, and in my final year, I wrote a script for a feature film.
After I graduated, I hated that it was just collecting dust on my desktop. But the film industry is... inaccessible. For me, it would take a lot of sacrifice and luck.
I'm strictly a writer, I possess no other movie making talents. So I couldnโt make my movie the way I pictured it in my head.
But I could publish it.
Problem is, people donโt read screenplays. And for good reason. They arenโt written to be read. People think about them as blueprints. You write as little as possible, pack things into a few words.
There's also the idea of roles in filmmaking. I was taught that as the screenwriter, my work shouldn't trespass into the director territory.
All of that can make scripts unappealing to readers.
So I tried to transform my screenplay into a novel, but that didn't work. There are just so many characters and it's super dialogue heavy. It just wasnโt falling on the page the way I wanted.ย
So I changed tactics. Decided I was going to compromise. Make the screenplay readable.
Make it a novelplay.ย
๐ป๐ฏ๐ฌ ๐ฌ๐ฟ๐ท๐ฌ๐น๐ฐ๐ด๐ฌ๐ต๐ป
So thatโs how I got my first book. Itโs prose and script mixed together. But it also reads like a film with its plotting, scene/chapter structure, etc.
But my first book was experimental in a lot of ways.
This is a new format. Screenwriting is filled with rules and for the first time, Iโm making my own rules. And thatโs what this blog is about. I am going to chronicle my exploration of novelplays and hopefully encourage other writers to give it a shot as well.ย
My first book mirrors a film, so I'm calling it a cinematic noveplay. But my next project mirrors television. Specifically sitcoms. Iโm thinking Iโll call it a sitcomic novelplay. Or maybe serial? Weโll see!
Right now Iโm focusing on trying new things, writing what feels right with no expectations.ย
Part of me is happy about the fact that being a new author with few resources means I'm basically publishing into the void because itโs giving me the space I need to make mistakes and really establish the format.ย
If youโre a screenwriter, youโve probably dreamed of seeing your work on the big screen, not a Kindle. But I think if you reframe your perspective and revision readers as your dream audience, you may feel empowered by how accessible self-publishing is.ย
So, if youโre a writer or reader or just plain interested in this experiment, I will be posting avidly.
I'm going to teach you how to write novelplays.
First, Iโll give a quick run-down of how screenwriting works, for any of you who need a refresher or unfamiliar.
Then we'll head into novelplays.
We can take a look at structure, plotting, and of course, formatting.
After that, we'll delve deeper and I'm extremely open to feedback. Once we get started, if you have any topics you want discussed, or questions, please feel free to ask or submit!
I was thinking of using Discord once we have a bit of a community running. I have one currently, but it needs an extreme makeover (one I'm not really qualified to do... still trying to understand the platform, haha).
I was also thinking of posting Youtube Videos to make things more accessible and engaging. BUT, and this another big one, I don't love being in front of the camera. I also don't love editing, and my school workload just makes it harder.
If I do post videos, they will be LOW BUDGET (meaning you must lower your expectations). Whenever I can afford an editor, trust, you'll see a difference.

hey David! I published it on Amazon and because of the agreement, I can't host it on a pdf or any other server than theirs. So I can give reader copies on the Kindle phone app or the kindle e-reader. I can send copies directly to someone's kindle account.

Show(er) Thoughts
Been rewatching Arrested Development and catching jokes that flew over my head the first two times over. One of them has me thinking about Michael's wife. I realized that he's only been widowed two years by the start of Season 1.
And he has to sit through so many morbid jokes...

Hi Willow!
Thanks for welcoming me :) My book is called Christmas Eid and I've published it on Amazon. It's something I call a novelplay-- It's a book that reads like a movie. I majored in Screenwriting back in uni, but my book is more readable than a screenplay because it's full of prose.
What do you like to write?
Hello!
So... I published a book and I guess that officially makes me an author! (Yay!)
BUT (and brace yourself, it's a big one) I've been confronted by the rude, insidious awakening of the fact that I have no readers. (Not-so-Yay...)
To be Francine, I am straight up not having a good time right now.
1 or 10,000 people have told me that to get readers, I have to put myself out there and the only place I feel comfortable doing that is Tumblr.
So here I am, returning to my roots. Coming to you with open arms and an open heart (please ignore my strange expression, I have resting cringe face; it's a product of my introverted nature, or rather a by-product of my hombodiness, which is also an unofficial side effect of the usual suspects, the pandemic and a dash of social media).
I'm looking for a community. Looking for beta-readers and am happy to be a beta-reader. Looking to talk, laugh, complain, cheer, and share. I'd love to find a writing group and make friends too.
So, on this blog, I will:
Talk about writing (and myself)
Answer questions nobody asked
Share quotes from my book
Talk about interests like books, movies, and art
A little about me:
You can call me Shahra (My pen name is K.W. Shahrazad)
I'm 24 years old and a grad student.
I love sitcoms, drinking tea, and I guess just the small things in life
Masterlist of Snippets
I'm really hoping to find mutuals! If you feel like we vibe, please reach out! I've no doubts that together we will straight up be having a good time.
Love, Sharah <3

Christmas Eid (Coming of Age Fiction) Snippet
From Chapter 5 - The Teenage Dilemma
HARUN:
You need to change your usernameโ
Abdi-Hakeem flops front first on Harunโs bed, groaning.
ABDI-HAKEEM, muffled by the comforter:
Iโm. Not. Changing. My. Name.
HARUN:
โto LilMoShmoney.
ABDI-HAKEEM, turning on his side:
Iโll die first.
HARUN:
Isnโt your death exactly what weโre trying to avoid?
ABDI-HAKEEM:
Thatโs not an option. Iโm not changing it.
HARUN:
Think of it as exchanging part of your username. Replace the โbigโ with โlilโ. You canโt drop โMoShmoneyโ completely because then your career would be dead. But not changing it will mean that you might end up literally dead. Ergo, my solution, Demote yourself. Youโll come off smart enough to avoid being a first-degree murder victim.
ABDI-HAKEEM, flatly:
A) Never say โergoโ again. B) Next idea. Quickly.
Harun takes a break from his pacing to slump down in his desk chair. He fiddles with one of his many figurines.
HARUN:
Think about how your death will affect the family. I canโt be a Muslim minority related to the delinquent casualty in a Florida Man headline. Iโll never make it in politics! Waitโฆ Now that I think about it, that might make for a good sob story. If I made you the โcall to actionโ in my โheroโs journeyโ, I could milk your death all the way to Stateโฆ
Abdi-Hakeem sits up and whips a pillow at his cousin. Harun catches it with his face.

Christmas Eid is Booksmart meets the holidays but with a Muslim immigrant family and written in a unique, novelplay format. It's available on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited.
Chapter One is available on my website.

Living in North America, even when you arenโt celebrating Christmas, it feels like you're celebrating Christmas.
Promptly on November 1st, the red, white and green festivities begin and their brilliant hues are inescapable. There are elves on shelves and an inflatable Frosty on roofs. And Santa! He really is always watching you as heโs plastered on every surface. He sees you when youโre sleeping because heโs on the half-eaten chocolate wrapper on your dresser. He knows when youโre awake because heโs also on your cereal box, milk carton, and morning coffee sleeve.
Around this time of year, there is a spike in cases of FOMO within first and second-generation immigrants whose holiday rosters do not include Christmas. For over fifty days, they are stuck between a rock and a jolly place because Christmas can beโฆ tempting. The twinkling lights are alluring, the merry melodies are mesmerizing, the promise of gifts is promising, and so the fear of missing out can be all-consuming. It all starts on an ordinary November morning when suddenly, "the holiday spirit" infuses everything the light touches. Every mode and medium has a Yuletide tinge, and every sector of life has a little trimming. For two months, these FOMO-ridden individuals trapeze through jagged tinsel and paper-cut sharp wrapping paper, trying to maneuver in the aftermath of Big Hallmarkโs joyous rampage.
In schools, children sing carols in winter pageants, some only mouthing the words to Silent Night or hesitantly rockinโ around a Christmas tree.
There's no argument that these activities can spark joy, and that's precisely the problem. Celebrating, the very act of it, is fun. Whether itโs Halloween, a wedding, an achievement, however minimal, or even a dogโs birthday, people find reasons to come together and celebrate. But in this case, Christmas is not theirs to celebrate. Some people have a little voice in their heads that nettles them each time they put on reindeer ears or take part in Secret Santa. Depending on the individual, it could be their conscience screaming, โWhat would my parents say?โ
In the winter whirlwind of hope, excitement, and merriment, itโs almost impossible to not want to be a part of it all, even subconsciously. Itโs difficult to deny that Christmas is fun.
Especially since celebrating non-Christian holidays in the West can be challenging.
There are no signature drinks or holiday hours. There are no lights and most definitely no statutory days off. Christmas is fun because of the sheer scale. The stakes are high with countdowns, giveaways, and so many parties.
Christmas isnโt just a day you celebrate, itโs a season. Itโs a pallette and a theme. Itโs a genre of music and film. Itโs a category of dessert, dinner, and beverage.
That said, itโs difficult to compete with all the fanfare that happens each year in December. Parents are often compelled to go above and beyond to get their kids excited about their own celebrations. Usually with the help of old reliable Mr. Chuck E. Cheese and even older โ and therefore more reliable โ Mr. Wad of Cash. Worse yet, when one has to justify their need for a day off to a manager who is apparently fascinated by their religion, people canโt help but pray for patience, or better yet, a miracle.
A miracle in which there is no rock by the jolly place. What if a certain non-Christian American demographic could celebrate their holiday at the same time as everyone else? What if they could ride on the Christmas coattails of vacation days, holiday parties, and sales? What if a certain non-Christian religious holiday coincided with Christmas and millions more could wholeheartedly celebrate together with the masses? What if, for example, Eid al-Adha fell on December 24th?
Wouldnโt that be a miracle?
