Life update!
It's been a while, but my new years' resolution was to learn completely new languages, so here's what I've been studying for the 1st time ever;
Dutch & Tibetan!
Expect to see some more content in these languages. Tibetan is one of those languages where the resources are better in Korean than in English, I would have never thought I'd come to use Korean in this way but here we are!
Dutch pulled me in because it's SUPER similar to Swedish and I can already read and understand everything... I need to treat my brain with an easy one in the middle of languages like Mongolian or Tibetan.
I think I'll post a little more in the coming month. See you guys on here!

Year recap
(I don't know if I should laugh or cry!)
The monthly recaps ended because I've been too busy to post but no worries, I haven't stopped studying! Now I will showcase what I did this year <3
Korean
Korean is my main focus every year so as always, I studied the most words in it... And it has really paid off! I started 2023 not understanding news broadcasts and took that as my challenge. Today I can confidently say that I now understand it all!
I had logged 596 words before I stopped logging it all. My favorite words were 回甲, 石花, 날름거리다, 수레, 匿名 and 덕계못.
Japanese
Secondary focus this year, I found a friend who's also studying it and I wanna be better :3
267 words logged, my favorites being ソ連, 昔, 仲, 日常茶飯事 and 駄菓子!
Mongolian
I love studying Mongolian but I had no time... Maybe I will study more next year! My favorite words were шашин, шалтгаан and найз.
Ainu
I LOVE finding new pages with words I haven't learned before! I also watched a lot of content on YouTube about the language. I don't think I have favorite words for Ainu, as I love them all!
Mandarin
I've been learning Mandarin passively from the start (i.e. focusing more on listening and speaking than writing) as I know the characters well enough from studying Korean and Japanese. I can now understand a LOT and have no idea how, as I never actively studied the language. My next step is to start doing output, writing, and studying the grammar more.
French, Okinawan, Cantonese, Dutch, Italian, all the others that I totally forgot about
Were apparently not worth my time (jk. I love them all) But I studied them very little. I know I learned a lot of new things from all of them but listing them individually would be super boring.
Additional!
I've started brushing up on my Karelian and Ru**ian again (due to the recent events, I want to understand what the news is saying about things in Ru**ia) My grandma who spoke Karelian is getting old now, and nobody else from the family ever learned the language so It's my duty now! I will be more active in these languages next year.

My style of using flashcards ( ̄▽ ̄)
Tumblr media
Yippee!
I've been using flashcards since elementary school and this is my favorite way of using them. I'll use Korean words to showcase my method.
Usually I'll have a main side and secondary side. I'll write the main side in large letters and use a fun color and the secondary one with black pen. Here I used green to contrast the black. Idk colors motivate me...
I'll have a few words from different categories every time.
Tumblr media
Here's what I mean: a few categories with similar-sounding words and one with random words. I never exclusively do similar-sounding words as I remember better when there are only a few similar ones.
Tumblr media
The secondary side has two definitions, usually either two writing systems or two languages (polyglot tingz) so I get as much out of these cards as I can. In this case, there's hanja and English!
I'll flip through a pack like this for a few days, usually 2-3. Then I'll make another one!
I'll take the pack out again in a month and if I don't remember a word, I'll add the word to my current pack! If old cards keep coming back, I'll stop making new ones and study the old ones until I remember.

My studies this month
This month I've been focusing on other things and I even took a week off for a holiday! So I haven't logged my words or anything, but I can still tell what I've been studying.
Korean: I've been watching the news every day! I haven't been learning many new words this month.
Japanese: A lot of improvement! I can speak a lot more now and understand many new words! My favorite is コヲコヲロ!
Mandarin: A lot of accidental immersion! I went for a holiday in the city and there were a BUNCH of Chinese people for some reason? I heard an unusual amount of the language this month.
Cantonese: Not much this month either! Watched a few documentaries in the language!
Italian: new language! My friend speaks it and I wanted to have a go! So far so good, seems simple!
Okinawan: I can speak simple sentences now! I need to work on my listening skills...
Ainu: also a new language! I want to focus on this a lot more this month!
French: I read a few news articles, not my main focus!
Tumblr media
I've been focusing on conlanging all this time. I need to move my focus back to languages this month!

Month Review!!
Tumblr media
Korean
Total: 198
I wasn't planning to focus on Korean this much this much, but I guess immersion is doing its thing... I'll be showcasing my monthly favorite words I learned for every language as always, here are them in Korean!
主張 - 주장 - opinion 化石 - 화석 - fossil 同門 - 동문 - alumnus 甲富 - 갑부 - millionaire 비늘 - scales
Japanese
Total: 108
My secondary focus! I've improved a bunch this month!
きらびやか - dazzling 占い - うらない - fortune telling 合併 - がっぺい - merge 翌々 - よくよく - two...later 起点 - きてん - origin
Okinawan
First month of actual active study!
Total: 9
女子 - ゐなぐ - girl 起きっ - おきっ - to wake up
Mongolian
Total: 33
I was diving deep into conjugation, so that explains the lack of words... learned more conjugations this month!
энэтхэг - enetkheg - India зовлонг - zovlong - suffering дараалал - daraalal - order үндэс - ündes - root, foundation найз - najz - friend
French
Total: 53
Picked French up again... This is year 3 of French for me, after 2 years of no study. I haven't gotten rusty though! I think I've actually improved during my break! (Thanks EU for giving me constant French immersion)
connu - known lorsque - when net - clean, clear tandis - while tandis que - whereas
Mandarin
Total: ?
I didn't log my words in Mandarin this month but I did learn more than 10... I will need to focus on speaking a bunch!
Other languages:
I've been listening to a lot of foreign-language content! My friend group speaks a lot of Dutch, Hebrew and Thai, so a lot of unusual immersion :) I've also been learning more Cantonese from Youtube vlogs by accident!

Interesting Japanese word compared to other EA languages: ソ連
[ソれん], (soren), Soviet union Clipped from ソビエト連邦 [ソビエトれんぽう] (sobieto renpō)
Compared to for example Mandarin and Korean, this word is rarely if never written with a kanji. Mandarin: 蘇聯 / 苏联 [sūlián] Korean: 蘇聯 소련 [soryeon] (SK) / 쏘련 [ssoryeon] (NK)
Another funny name for the Soviet Union was 赤露 [せきろ] (sekiro) which means "to be naked" in Mandarin (chìlù).

This week's studies!
Friday: I am so excited! I had my last final exam! So refreshing!
Tumblr media
Don't even ask what these words are from... :D
Tumblr media
Saturday: These are from daum cafe, I didn't even know there was a slang for banana milk... I guess I've fallen out of fandom
Tumblr media
Monday: Today, i went a bit medical... I don't know why I would need all these words, but I guess they're good to know!

Finally I studied Korean again!
It's in two parts because I studied two different times... big brain moment
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(why is this so big...)
I thought why not study things that I will literally never use... so I studied 생명분류 (´- `*)
Anyways, today I started getting familiar with Hokkien! No notes yet tho! I like how some words are so similar to Korean! I was also added to a groupchat with people who speak other cool languages, who knows what I will focus on next!

Learn some Mongolian with me!
(beginner-friendly)
Comitative case (with...)
The comitative case is marked with -тай [taj], -той [toj], (back) or -тэй [tej] (front). So, if you want to say "with...", you add these things to the end of the word according to vowel harmony.
ном [nom] (a book) -> номтой [nomtoj] (with a book)
мах [makh] (meat) -> махтай [makhtaj] (with meat)
охин [okhin] (a girl) -> охинтой [okhintoj] (with a girl)

Resources I use to study Mongolian online
Feel free to drop more suggestions in the comments if you know any good sites!
NAVER Korean-Mongolian dictionary
There is a sizeable Mongolian community in Korea and vice versa, so the Korean-language NAVER dictionary has a bunch of vocab. They have dictionaries for other languages that use English on that site, so I expect them to add a Mongolian one in the coming years.
Wiktionary
Wiktionary is my best friend for any language! They even have the traditional script for many of the words on there <3
cjv lang
They have a pretty good site for the traditional script and spelling! I don't use it a lot but it's a good reference if you forget the letters.
Live Lingua Peace Corps Mongolian Flashcards
The BEST pdf for grammar out there. It explains things clearly compared to many others I've tried.
Tatoeba
I like translating sentences when studying languages, so this is a must-visit any time I study. They currently have 2636 sentences in Mongolian.
HONORABLE MENTIONS: Google Translate supports Mongolian. It doesn't always do a good job, but it can translate short sentences well.

Today, I spent a ton of time sleeping😭 14 hours in total! Then I went shopping and then started my studies.
Tumblr media
Only 10 words! I wanted to focus on Mongolian a bit more today.
Tumblr media
Broke down two sentences! There's a bunch of content on Mongolian in Korean, so the English is translated from Korean. It might have some errors!
And this might have errors too (you never know with endangered languages)
