Something for writers - especially ones who are putting their work out into the world and seeking honest feedback. Maybe you're getting alpha or beta feedback.

You can't account for poor reading comprehension.

Even the best of good-faith, dedicated beta readers are going to miss stuff. They're going to miss your foreshadowing, your subtle messages, your gentle hints.

And it's because they didn't read it properly, not because you didn't write it properly.

It's hard to tell the difference, but for me, the rule of thumb is that if multiple people need additional clarification, it's probably worth putting in. If it's just one, you might be ok to leave it. You don't need to spell everything out for every reader, and some readers are going to miss stuff. Or they're gonna skim.

A reader gets out what they put into the book. You can't squeeze 100% of the author's intended experience out of every reader. Some, maybe. Write for them. But you won't catch them all, and that's ok.
