Astruc successfully misappropriates culture again
So weirdly enough I found this out by watching the game grumps and their latest playthrough of phoenix wright - I’m sure this has already been pointed out before because that games been out a while but… remember the kwagatama plot point that went nowhere?
There’s no way those are not based on Magatama, a spiritual symbol in JAPANESE culture.

The one thing I absolutely loved about the finale was that my dream headcanon of eldritch horror Plagg was real
I love how fanon Plagg is actually like crazy smart knows everything chaotic neutral with a pinch of eldritch horror
whilst canon Plagg is just like “haha cheese”

So there may be some unforeseen ramifications of Felix’s student theatre play, if we’re to interpret the story literally.
The imagery implies that both Gabe/Emilie and Amelie/rootin-tootin-missile-rider use the broken Peacock miraculous to conceive their kids, rather than just create them. But we have seen sentimonsters be created on the show before - they’re an anthropomorphised version of your emotions. Whose emotions? I can only assume Emilie used it on Gabe and rootin-tootin used it on Amelie, except that doesn’t explain why Adrien and Felix look the same.
..soooo what was the actual sentimonster here? Is there such thing as miraculous semen I have to know

So I think we’re not interpreting Risk correctly. Obviously the thing that’s been hinted at this whole season is that somebody is a sentimonster and Emilie’s wedding ring is the amok controlling them.
But why would Felix suddenly obey orders given to Adrien?
ADRIENS CLOTHES WERE THE SENTIMONSTER ALL ALONG

I had to delete my previous post about Psychomedian.. because I was wrong.

Someone commented on a different post that it was the crushed helmet that was thrown back in the air, and so I watched the scene back at .25 speed to discover all that outrage that I had at 3am over this little detail was completely unwarranted.
Anyway go on with your day folks haha

I'm late to the party but I have a couple of thoughts about the Encanto post
Firstly: spoiler warnings for Encanto.
I'm assuming we all know what was said, but as a refresher, here is what was originally posted:
Tumblr media
I think we've all recognised by now the hypocrisy of a few of these critiques - his dislike of the scale of the film, for example, seems more like a personal issue and if he was given the same critique I'm sure he'd dismiss it because we're not established animators (personally I'd love to know what he thinks of Die Hard, 12 Angry Men, Saw, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Rear Window... etc;) ...
A few things however...
1: Having not seen the French dub I can't say whether or not it's good, but I'm a subs girl through and through, so I definitely understand why he'd say that.
2: I agree that there are too many characters to really get attached to any of them - I feel like I only really got to know Mirabel and Abuela beyond those surface traits, and Bruno to some extent (and really he's just the best character of the movie). Would I get rid of any of them? No. I think that this movie really should be a stage show with extra time dedicated to other characters - namely Dolores, who talks not only about being in love with Mariano (only for it not to come up again until the last possible second) and also about being able to hear Bruno through the walls?! And this is said at the end and not beforehand?! Girl needed her own solo song. Anyway. Make it a stage show. moving on.
3: He's lying if he says if he doesn't remember We Don't Talk about Bruno but the majority of the songs do fall a little short when we consider what Lin Manuel Miranda is capable of.
Now that I've got that out of the way, here's where I very strongly disagree and honestly it's the purpose of my entire post:
Thomas Astruc has no right to say Encanto has a weak base mythology.
By saying this, he's both demonstrating that he doesn't really know what makes a good mythology (especially in children's media) and that he didn't apply any critical analysis to the film whatsoever.
The mythology of Encanto on a surface level is actually super simple: the candle is magic, therefore the house is magic, therefore the family is magic. Their bond as a family is what keeps the magic alive and thriving. It is, as it's repeatedly described by the characters, a miracle, which has no explanation (beyond, perhaps, being born out of Abuela's grief)... and it doesn't need one. Miracles don't necessarily need explanation, especially in cases such as these, where the magic system is really simple to understand.
If we're going to compare Encanto with Miraculous, here is where we can really say Encanto has done better, because it picked a lane and stuck with it. If you're a fan of @immaturityofthomasastruc, as I am, or read Astruc's twitter often, you would notice he flip-flops back and forth between the show being really simple and the show being really complicated. The same goes for the magic system - if we look at the entire extended universe of this show we have kwamis, miraculous(es), akumas, amoks, renlings, prodiguous, guardian monks, wives in comas, Eyes Wide Shut parties, superheroes in America with actual super powers... did I mention that there are apparently infinite kwamis that represent abstract thoughts or concepts and this is only explained in a comic book that only had two issues, never mind the fact that originally the magic was at least visually built on Chinese philosophical principles and their zodiac mythology... All this I could forgive if the rules were a little clearer or at least coherent in the show, but unless you consult Astruc's twitter, they're not. What five year old, as he professes the intended audience to be, is going to think to look up the show creator on Twitter to figure out how the show works?
Going back to his critique of Encanto's apparent lack of mythology, I assert that he's demonstrated a complete lack of critical analysis of the film because as far as I can see he doesn't understand the importance of the magic in a thematic or symbolic sense.
Before I explain myself, I want to let you know that I'm a white Australian. I haven't been to Colombia. The closest I've gotten to Latin American culture is the Mexican pavilion at Walt Disney World (plus the friends I made whilst I worked at the parks but they were also Mexican, not Colombian, so you can see where my expertise is lacking here).
A lot of people online have recognised that this film uses intergenerational trauma as an underlying theme of the film. I mentioned earlier that the candle and its magic was perhaps born out of Abuela's grief. She is a guardian of this magic, but she forgets that her survival of the traumatic experience is part of the gift she received and that her family is special with or without their 'useful' magic gifts - "The miracle is not/some magic that you've got/the miracle is you/not some gift, just you." Less specifically, the magic is a visual representation of their genuine closeness as a family - when the family becomes fractured as a result of the distance between Mirabel and her abuela, the magic is fractured. In some ways, the fact that the family have magic powers doesn't actually matter. The real story of the film is about a family. I can't believe Astruc doesn't see this. My guy... you're supposed to be a showrunner. Are you really telling me you don't know the importance of narrative themes?
Lastly: losing your magic, or your way of life, is a higher stake than Astruc thinks. He obviously doesn't know the profound effect that the panini has had on a lot of people, who lost their way of life and are still trying to get back to normal. On the stakes of Miraculous, well. You kinda lose that when the status quo is maintained after 4 seasons and using time travel to undo the villain's victory twice. Just saying.

Gabriel must be having a bad year 😂😂😂
*Chloe redeems herself by exposing Gabriel’s network/cult to the world using Alya’s blog and addition evidence obtained by Kagami, chaos and wealth redistribution reign*
I mean some time explaining what on earth that Eyes Wide Shut party was actually for might add a little extra level of interest to the narrative as a whole? For someone that’s meant to be highly influential in the fashion industry with a supermodel son.. there’s not much fashion industry in this show.
As for Chloe being the one to start the anti-capitalist rebellion… I don’t see her doing that in collaboration with Alya and Kagami. She doesn’t play that well with others.

It’s me, posting on my phone again cause it’s 4am and I’m too tired to boot up the computer
Anyway I’m feeling really clowned on by the Gabriel Agreste episode because the Felix plot line is suddenly the most interesting one in the series and because we know it’s episode 9 (I believe?) of the season it’s clear that it’s not being brought back up at all? I’ve got my fingers crossed that it’ll come back up in the season finale but I also have my clown makeup ready.
Also what the heck is with Chloés personality retcon? Like suddenly she wants Adrien to be back at home despite having a conniption in Season 2, ironically in The Collector episode… like is this meant to be what the fallout of Queen Banana was? She’s still apparently in love with him but she doesn’t want him at school anymore? Even for the writers (Astruc) this is poorly thought out. I loved that she came out through the vent though, that was hilarious.

There’s definitely a lot of people who are messaging Thomas constantly with questions that are either redundant or asking for a spoiler…
but Thomas regularly blocks people who give constructive criticism and point out some things that are problematic, so I don’t exactly get what he’s asking for here.

I hope the "fans" who actually hate ML and Thomas Astruc get A GRIP.

actually this would be an amazing move and I would watch this
AU where Gabe eventually learns to cope with his wife’s coma but keeps going with the supervillain thing because he’s grown way too invested in the lives of these 17 high schoolers specifically, and is subtly manipulating their lives into what is essentially a reality tv show for his own entertainment

So this is a weird theory about the upcoming episode titled Gabriel Agreste.
So one, he doesn’t have his glasses on when he summons Nooroo and Duusu, but this hasn’t got much to do with anything I just wanted to point it out:
Tumblr media
But two, we see him as Shadowmoth making a sentimonster.. you know, for once.
Tumblr media
(Side note, why does he look so weird against the background.. like his head looks like you can see the polygons)
Anyway I’m wondering if he’s going to make a sentimonster version of himself for the sole purpose of akumatising himself.
..galaxy brain move but no narrative purpose just gonna put it out there
