A is for Anaesthesia - my art and letter page in the Whump ABCs (@thewhumpyprintingpress)
The art I drew for this was of my ocs Kyle Kindall after an incident, and Yuuki Takahashi trying to offer what soothing and comfort he can - in spite of the fact that neither of them like hospitals.
The Whumpy Printing Press has now published the Whump ABCs zine (from 2nd April 2024), if anyone happens to be interested in it!

Can you tell us more about the political structure of Arkala? Like do they have a Parliament, elections, what level of power does the monarch have…also what are some historical/political problems the country has faced?
Oh, of course! ♥ So, Arkala is a monarchy formally known as "The Kingdom of Arkala."* The monarch has absolute power, and is the country's formal leader. The monarch does, however, delegate much of its judicial power to the nation's military/police, aka the "Peace Force" (or "PF" for short).
*Disclaimer (for anyone who hasn't heard of Arkala): Arkala is a fictional island nation in the Tasman Sea (b/w Australia and New Zealand) and is the setting for my original story The Case of Kindall, K. and its extended "Kindall K" series story.
In terms of historical/political problems that the country has faced:
The major one (and a still ongoing one) is the Arkala-ethnic people's discrimination against the Arkala'ana-ethnic people. There used to be violent intercultural issues between the Arkala and the Arkala'ana people. The issues were born out of misinterpretation, strongly held prejudice and a lack of cross-cultural competencies.
The monarchy was established as a means to bring peace and order to the discord between the Arkala and Arkala'ana peoples. Or, more accurately, to discontinue the Arkala people's escalated violence against the Arkala'ana. It was established by a well-recognised Arkala chief who saw the violence for what it was and called for it to stop. He was elected by the Arkala people to be the leader of the movement towards peace between peoples, and became the first monarch.
(This first monarch is Amelia's ancestor.)
Since then, the Arkalan nation has been ruled by a monarch descended from this ancestor (a King or Queen).
But, while there was "peace" enforced between the tribes of the Arkala and the Arkala'ana - and later, also among immigrants from other nations - discrimination against the Arkala'ana never truly ceased. We see this discrimination in modern Arkala, reflected onto Kyle during his trial in court (in The Case of Kindall, K.) - in the witness statements, in the biased character reports, and in brushed-aside severeness of his resulting sentence. We also see this in Kyle's wariness if he's singled out by an Arkala-ethnic authority figure at the Arkala Peace Hall in A'o (see KK3).
This is, therefore, an ongoing issue that Amelia is going to be faced with as she steps into power as Arkala's monarch in the post-KK3 storyline.
---
I could write more, but I thought I should try to keep my answer concise 😅
It's a very interesting question, and one that I'm exploring in more depth in the second trilogy that I'm working on! Thanks so much for your ask!! :D ✨

I know it's kinda selfish, but can I have one asexual character that isn't aromantic? One who stands up and says that you can love without sex, and that they deserve love without having to engaging in something they prefer not to?
Also a aromantic character that isn't asexual? One who doesn't feel guilt about needing and wanting people, but not seeking a romantic relationship with them? One that is open and proud, and in no way ashamed for their lack of love and need of sex?
Please?

An old WIP comic I don't think I'll ever finish haha
This scene is about six months after the Ninao kidnapping incident: in the summer following Yuuki's kidnapping ordeal, Yuuki collapses at the Harrison family's house as the exhaustion of post-traumatic stress and the insomnia that's been plaguing him hit him.
The dialogue scribbled on the art differs slightly from what I wrote in the novel version of this scene, but reads:
"Yuuki, are you alright?" "I'm fine." ...just a little light-headed ...from this trauma that won't go away.

Reading The Lord of the Rings as someone with PTSD, too, I definitely find myself experiencing that "making a different kind of sense."
Tolkien wrote a wonderful story, and he also communicated an emotion... an experience that I can't find the words to adequately summarise right now.
At the end of The Return of the King, in Chapter 7: "Homeward bound," Frodo is physically in pain and is haunted by "the memory of darkness [..] heavy on [him]." Frodo remarks,
"There is no real going back. Though I may come to the Shire, it will not seem the same; for I shall not be the same. I am wounded with knife, sting, and tooth, and a long burden. Where shall I find rest?"
Gandalf did not answer.
Then, as they journey on, they pass Weathertop, where Frodo was stabbed. Frodo had been "merry again, merry as if he did not remember the blackness of the day before." But as they come to Weathertop, Frodo rides straight past the location, unable to look upon it.
At length they came to Weathertop; and it was drawing towards evening and the shadow of the hill lay dark on the road. Then Frodo begged them to hasten, and he would not look towards the hill, but rode through its shadow with head bowed and cloak drawn close around him.
And, although Tolkien did not write these lines in the book, Frodo's voiceover at the end of The Return of the King film articulates this so well:
How do you pick up the threads of an old life? How do you go on, when in your heart you begin to understand... there is no going back? There are some things that time cannot mend. Some hurts that go too deep, that have taken hold.
This story was written by a man who knew trauma. And I feel seen by it. And I know I'm not alone in the experience of it.
LOTR has, both during my trauma and in the aftermath of it, helped me find solace and make sense of things that I couldn't speak of, like the spiritual, psychological, and psychobiological way that long-suffered trauma affects a person.
Some people don't like Frodo, but he makes a different kind of sense to me.
If you read the lord of the rings as World War 1 literature it really feels different.

⛺ and 🔪 for Kaen!
Ooof, poor Kaen!
🔪⛺Field medicine and awake surgery
Tw: well obviously, field medicine, awake surgery, blood, stabbing.
Sorry this ended up a bit long but SURPRISE I actually ended up writing a short chapter! Magic! So I need to thank you for this prompt, it's the first writing I'm sharing since April!! 🥹 I know it's been long, but life has been hectic...
"We have to do something" Conrad stated, looking down at Kaen, who currently had a small knife stuck on his upper thigh, the blood painting the snow a bright red.
Color of the knife was a very obvious bad sign, the dirty gold color almost the same as fool's gold that could make everyone's blood run cold.
Aurimite.
“Road is still blocked… “ Veir muttered, trying to get a connection on their comms, but it wasn't working. “I don't know how long until help can some here”
Reyna wrapped their emergency blanket around Kaen gently, noticing how cold her friend was getting. “Hey, can you look at me?” She asked, tapping his cheek.
Kaen took a shaky breath and opened his eyes. They were filled with tears, his teeth clattering both with pain and the cold. But he managed to give her a slight nod, as if saying he was still holding on.
“That's not good…” Conrad muttered as he checked Kaen's temperature. “The aurimite is already mixing into his system…”
That was the real problem they had. The aurimite. Conrad knew he had to pull the knife out.
If it were any of them they would choose to leave it in. Knowing that a trace amount of aurimite far away from the core wouldn't be much of a danger besides blocking their power for a few hours.
For Kaen though, it was a different story.
Kaen already had aurimite in his system from his previous encounter with the Hunters, and if this also added on it…
Conrad's guess was that Kaen was at risk of hypothermia very soon, and if he considered the aurimite poisoning….he must be close to a dangerous dose.
This wasn't good…
“Niran, help me” he said, calling their medic in training. Two of them were the most knowledgeable with first aid.
“Veir, you too. Reyna make a perimeter check and be on your guard”
“....wh…wha's….gonna….do?” Kaen stuttered between the shivers, sudden movements making him look up.
“It's alright kiddo, calm down” Conrad reassured him, brushing Kaen's hair back in a calming motion. “Can you try to take slow breaths?”
Kaen gave Conrad a nod too, barely noticeable.
“Good…good. Keep going” he smiled down. He turned his attention to the wound, lifting the pressure slightly to look at the state of it. The bleeding was slowed down ever so slightly. Not that it mattered much because of what they were gonna do next.
“Niran, you'll be ready to put pressure and then start healing as much as you can after I pull it out”
“Understood”
“Veir, hold Kaen and try to keep him calm. I'll be enough to hold his leg still”
Veir shuffled behind Kaen at the directions, holding Kaen's hands. “It'll be just alright” he reassured Kaen, “Don't look down, aight?”
“... don't….h..hurts…” Kaen complained.
“Kaen, it's aurimite. We have to pull it out” Conrad said, his voice stern, hiding the guilt he felt for what he was going to do. “Your power is already getting unsteady”
Kaen's eyes were filled with fear, his lips trembling as he looked at Conrad.
“I know kiddo… but we don't have time”
“Here…bite on this” Veir put some sort of folded cloth on Kaen's mouth and he thankfully bites down on it. He really didn't want to break a tooth on top of this.
He could feel his power slipping away from his reach, just like Conrad said. He couldn't keep himself warm, or even make a little candle fire right now…. And it just hurt so much.
He wanted to pass out… he was scared of what would come next.
From the corner of his eye he saw Niran and Conrad sift through their first aid bag. When he came to again Conrad was tying something really tight on his leg. And it hurt.
Tourniquet, he thought hazily.
Kaen whimpered again.
“Don't look there” Veir turned his face gently to the side, “Keep your eyes on me, alright?”
“......hurts” Kaen stated the obvious.
“I know Kaen, we'll breathe together, alright? In with me…and then out…it'll be over soon”
“Everything is clear!” Reyna's voice announced from slightly far away. She must've been the reason most of the snow around them was gone, Kaen realized.
He felt Conrad's strong grip hold his leg down on the ground, even in his full power Kaen wouldn't be able to fight that strength, so Conrad's one hand was enough in this situation.
Veir kept Kaen from looking there. He could also feel Niran’s small hands, dabbing a piece of gauze around the knife.
It sent stars of pain into his vision when Conrad gripped the knife's hilt, the breathing rhythm Veir helped him into stuttered.
“I'm so sorry Kaen…” Conrad muttered, before Kaen's mind was engulfed by pain.
All sorts of pain, burning, tearing, throbbing…
He couldn't even scream in the first moment, his mouth hung open and he froze with pain before he let out a heart wrenching scream of pain.
He didn't notice Veir's hands on his shoulders, keeping him from moving, or Niran's reassuring words to him. Everything was a jumbled mess of blurry figures, spots shining in his vision and pain.
So much pain…
“... piece…in…”
“Broken….”
“......small…can you….”
“....deep…bone…”
Sounds of talking warped and echoed. Kaen couldn't figure out anything in the mess his mind was plunged into.
Before the pain from before could fade a little though, it suddenly got worse.
Something was pushed into the wound. Something sharp and cold and so, so painful….
Kaen shouted again, trying to get away but Conrad's grip was too strong.
Something pulled inside the wound. It felt so deep Kaen was sure they were breaking his leg…why were they doing that….
He begged for them to stop, his words breathless and incomprehensible.
The thing kept pulling and pulling, and Kaen kept screaming.
It felt like an eternity before something snapped and the pressure from inside his leg disappeared.
Frantic hands moved on his skin, pressing something on it and Kaen sagged into Veir's grip. Panting heavily with tears covering his face. He wasn't fully conscious, but aware enough to notice his surroundings.
A mess of red covered his leg, on the ground, on the pieces of gauze littering around him and on Conrad and Reyna's uniforms.
“......o…ov…er?” He managed to whisper, not having any more strength to speak as he watched them tightly wrap his leg, the bandages almost immediately stained red. “...p…pu…pleas…e”
“It's over…it's over” Veir reassured him, his own face was pale, looking like he was holding down nausea. “You'll be alright now”
Conrad loosened and tightened the tourniquet, which made Kaen whimper once again, after cleaning his hands with a sanitizing wipe and moved slightly so he could look at Kaen's face.
He tapped his forehead, “Your temperature is slowly rising back” he said with relief.
Without noticing Kaen leaned slightly onto his hand in need of comfort and the strong and strict leader started brushing Kaen's hair gently. “We'll get you to safety kiddo” he said softly.
“....h…how….more…?” Kaen mumbled out.
“No more, we're done”
“But….be…before….more….” Kaen's words were not enough to tell what he meant… he was trying to ask why they continued after pulling the knife out before.
But Conrad seemed to understand it, he shook his head as he reached to tuck the blanket around Kaen tighter. “The knife was broken…we had to take the piece out too” he explained. “I'm so sorry it had to hurt like that”
Kaen squeezed his eyes shut, and shook his head. “...’kay…tru…st…you”
“Trust me” Conrad nodded, a strained smile on his face like he didn't show Kaen how worried he was about the whole situation.
He called out to the rest of the team. “Sit around Kaen, I'll keep watch for help” he instructed, taking out the second emergency blanket from his backpack and when they sat surrounding their teammate he wrapped it around them where they were leaning against a tree. This way they could keep him warm and safe.
Even with the blinding throbbing in his thigh, Kaen leaned his head on Reyna's shoulder, feeling Veir's arm wrapped around his body and Niran's hands keeping his hands warm. Conrad stood up a few meters away, facing the opening. They were like a bubble of protection around him. His friends…
“Try to stay awake though, fire boy” Reyna tapped his forehead, bringing Kaen out from his daze. “We need to keep an eye on you”
“Yeah don't sleep”
“....’m not….not….sle…eping….”
“You were about to” Niran said with a tisk.
Kaen gave them a tired smile, but did his best to stay awake. Actually, the bolts of throbbing pain was enough to keep him awake. He cried out in pain when it got worse, hiding his face on Reyna's shoulder and he felt Veir's arm and Niran's hands hold him tighter.
Now they had to wait until help arrived.
I feel so excited tagging people on writing again ✨🥹 so as always if you want to be tagged just let me know.

A Month of Whump Winter Whumperland 2023 - Day 12: Bedside vigil
Rescued deer guy, exhausted and passed out after an adrenaline crash. He might not wake up for a while.
Following being captured then left behind while the forest burned, and the flames crept closer, and no amount of struggling could get himsef free.
He's safe now. The fire can't reach him here. Neither can the hands of those who hunted him.

Summary of results - Intercultural and cross-linguistic perspectives on the whump genre
Here is a summary of the results from the research thesis, "Intercultural and cross-linguistic perspectives on the whump genre"! This was part of my studying a Master of Contemporary International Studies. The research aimed to explore how whump-interested people connect with the whump genre cross-culturally and cross-linguistically.
Back in June/July this year (2023), I sent out a questionnaire open to any whump-interested person, and also invited interviews for bilingual whump-interested people. I've finally finished my thesis, and overall was awarded an A- for it!
The full thesis is available now to read on Academia.edu, and will also be available on IPU New Zealand's library website in January 2024.
Tumblr media
This research was approved for Human Research Ethics Clearance by the IPU New Zealand Research and Development Commitee on 3rd May 2023 (HREC-2023-05-03-01).
----
(NB: Due to there being an extensive amount of results, I've only summarised the key findings of the results section and a brief conclusion here. I've referenced page numbers for the full thesis if you'd like to read the extended version.)
-----
Summary of results (Questionnaire)
233 respondents | 92 different cultural/faith-based identities
The questionnaire was used to answer Research Question 1, "How do the aspects of Hofstede’s cultural dimensions and Schwartz’ universal human values reflect in the characteristics of whump genre identity?"
The questionnaire explored four themes associated with whump genre concepts - “agency,” “comfort,” “stoicism,” and “knowledge” - and found (p. 87):
For the theme of “agency,” questionnaire participants tended to perceive a greater importance for agency for the caretaker and whumper roles. This may be related to the caretaker and whumper role characters’ abilities to carry out their roles of caretaking and whumping respectively. While the cultural dimensions did not appear to be factors inherent to the theme of agency for the whumpee role in a whump genre story, this appeared to work towards supporting the cross-cultural enjoyment of whump. For the theme of “comfort,” hurt comfort, physical comfort and long-term recovery may be more accommodating of cultural dimension dynamics and have a greater capacity to fully realise the goals of Schwartz’ values. For the theme of “stoicism,” the way in which these dimensions can so diversely be applied to this theme suggests a cross-culturally applicable ground. For the theme of “knowledge,” the balance between the certainty of a known whumpee and the uncertainty of an unknown whumper indicate variable tolerance of ambiguity within the whump genre. This suggests a cross-culturally applicable ground.
Summary of results (Interview)
The full results section for the questionnaire can be read in the full thesis (pp. 61-87).
-----
31 interviewees (15 spoken, 16 written) | 24 different languages
The interview was used to answer Research Question 2, "How do bilingual whump-interested people perceive the ability to convey themes of hurt comfort (a subgenre of whump) in different languages?"
The interview questions were categorised into themes:
Theme 1: Preferences for language when interacting with fiction
Theme 2: Comparisons of different languages’ abilities to convey physical and emotional pain
Theme 3: Limitations or difficulties experienced when conveying whump in, and across, different languages
Theme 4: Cultural, social, and/or linguistic reasons influencing pronunciation of “whump”
Following transcription of the interviews, a thematic analysis involving examining code co-occurences found (p. 123):
For “Theme 1: Preferences for language when interacting with fiction,” preferences tended to be associated with the availability of media, the ability to connect with the author’s intended meaning, and the level of ease and comfort with which interviewees could engage with the fictional media. For “Theme 2: Comparisons of different languages’ abilities to convey physical and emotional pain,” interviewees’ comparisons highlighted differing ways of presenting and conveying pain in language, for example, through language features and words. Overall, interviewees felt that the languages which they were fluent in were generally equally capable of conveying physical and emotional pain, although different languages tended to approach the communicating of pain in different ways. For “Theme 3: Limitations or difficulties experienced when conveying whump in, and across, different languages,” the perceived limitations and difficulties experienced across languages tended to be associated with difficulties in conveying semantic, pragmatic and cultural meaning across languages, and tended to stem from the differences between sociolinguistic approaches to communicating ideas in languages. For “Theme 4: Cultural, social, and/or linguistic reasons influencing pronunciation of “whump,” common cultural, social and linguistic reasons for interviewees’ pronunciations of “whump” included how interviewees expected the word to sound based on their expectations of the letters in the phonological environment, the impact of a lack of having heard the word spoken aloud, sociocultural influences, intuition and language education.
Conclusions (brief exerpt from p. 130)
The full results section for the interview can be read in the full thesis (pp. 61-87). Interview transcripts (sensitive details filtered out) can be read in Appendix H (pp. 177-399).
-----
Research Question 1 explored cross-culturally applicable aspects of the whump genre. The findings suggested that themes of the whump genre accommodate variations in cultural social orientations and values, thereby enabling an interculturally common ground among whump-interested people.
Using qualitative research (interview), Research Question 2 explored how bilingual whump-interested people perceive and connect with hurt comfort themes across different languages. The findings suggest that multiple factors contribute to how bilingual whump-interested people engage with the whump genre, including but not limited to first and second languages as a tool to experience closely or otherwise distance the subject with, the availability of whump media in different languages, and manner of conveying aspects of pain and comfort through lexical, phonetic, grammatical and cultural aspects of language.
----
Thank you to everyone who participated in the research - the questionnaire and/or the interview! Your voices are all important in this kind of research, and are all very much appreciated!

im obsessed with your deer guy, can you tell us about them? :D
Ah! Deer boi! Yeah I'm a little obsessed with him too at the moment haha 😂✨
I thought of him one afternoon a couple of years ago, when I felt like drawing some art and was considering what I felt like drawing - and it ended up being this drawing!
Tumblr media
In the first drawing, deer guy had a run-in with a fellow stag or some bad guys or something, and ended up walking away from the encounter injured.
Following that, I drew art of deer guy's friends finding him, and then magically cauterising the wounds that kept bleeding. I've since come back to visit the idea this year, because he's a fun mysterious character to draw whump art for ~
When revisiting the vague idea of a story, I usually get the sense that he's a target for hunters (either for his antlers, or because he's a "monster", or because it's "Yuuki" lol). This time he was indeed caught by someone bad.
Deer guy is tagged as "deer!yuuki" because he's sort of a deer au of my novel story oc Yuuki. It's fun drawing Yuuki with long hair, and I guess I may have been watching Sweet Tooth at the same time as I drew the art haha - I think that definitely inspired some of it.
