Transylvania's History A to Z
Tumblr media
Title: Transylvania’s History A to Z
Author: Patricia Furstenberg
Published: August 23, 2021 by Amazon
Price: $1.99 on Kindle.
☆☆☆/5
Blurb: In Transylvania’s History A to Z, a collection of 100-word stories sprinkled with breathtaking photographs, Patricia Furstenberg uses the confining rules of the 100-word story form to stirringly capture Transylvania, Romania’s historical and geographical region. Transylvania’s unspoiled natural beauty, its tumultuous history, and the people who touched it are depicted in this book. Written as snapshots, tall tales, and descriptive narratives, these 100-word stories are the espresso of creative writing. A – Z, 100-Wors Stories are inspired by Transylvania’s history, from the Paleolithic Period to WW1 Each 100 Words Story is followed by a brief historical reference
Review: Not my usual kind of read, but I was given a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
It’s a mix of fiction and non-fiction, it kind of melds together for those who enjoy both worlds. The 100 word stories keep it short, sweet and to the point to keep the reader moving on to the next story, learning about the history of the beautiful place of Transylvania.
Again, not my usual read, I’m not real into non-fiction. I want to escape the world, but it was able to keep me interested enough to keep reading.

Title: Secrets of the Sealed Forest
Series: Erift’s Journey’s Book 1
Author: J. T. Tenra
Published: July 15, 2004 by iUniverse
Price: $4.99 on Kindle.
☆☆/5
Blurb: What would you do if you were given the chance to embark on a real life adventure? Would you take the plunge, or let it pass on to the next person? After being lured halfway across the globe with the promise of an exclusive video game event, Joseph Erift is pushed on a journey by a coffee-addicted professor that will forever change his life. He never thought magic could be real. That it was just an element found in fantasy stories and games. Airships and magic spells that create fire and slow time don’t exist in our real world. However, if that were the case, then why is he seeing these things, and why are him and his best friend being sent on a quest to stop a misguided young man from awakening an ancient power?
Review: First things first, I received a free reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
I could see the potential here, this would make a pretty good series if executed well. I felt like it was a bit of a journey to get through the story myself because of all the standing dialogue.
I enjoyed the world building, I enjoyed the different approach to magic, there were some things that I haven’t seen before when it came to the main characters believing in magic.
There could have been more journey and less standing around and talking about things, which is my main issue with this. I felt like more could have been done, the action could have happened sooner.

Yesterday's Thief
Tumblr media
Title: Yesterday’s Thief
Author: Al Macy
Series: Eric Beckman Thriller Book 1
Published: February 11, 2016 by Al Macy
Price: Free on Kindle.
☆/5
Blurb: It’s the year 2020, and Eric Beckman is a mind-reading detective. Although he reads only the conscious thoughts of the people he interviews, it usually gives him enough of an edge to overcome his inexperience as a PI. But mind reading is hell on relationships. Trusting comes hard when you know what people are really thinking. The case of his life lands in his lap when a beautiful woman materializes during a televised baseball game. She floats in midair, then drops to the ground, comatose. Beckman is at her bedside when she wakes up. From the moment she opens her eyes, she has him under her spell. He vows to figure out where—or when—she came from, even if it kills him. The stakes increase when she disappears without a trace. Worse, she holds the key to a worldwide energy catastrophe. If Beckman can’t find her and unlock her secrets, economies will collapse, and the world will spiral down into chaos.
Review: Alright, first of all, this came out in 2016, set in 2020. So four years into the future from the time this book was published. Self-driving cars are pretty much only just now being tested in 2020 and 2021, but yes, they have self-driving taxis.
Anyway, now that I have that off my chest, I have to say that these books that I have downloaded for my journal are not looking good. I struck gold with the X-Gen series and the three books since then have fall waaaaay down. I’m so disappointed.
The premise of this book sounded interesting, I was looking forward to a mind-reading PI…This is going slap bang into the DNF pile, which is just steadily growing, more than I want it to.

Yesterday's Gone
Tumblr media
Title: Yesterday’s Gone
Author: Sean Platt & David Wright
Series: Yesterday’s Gone Books 1-6
Published: September 30, 2011 by Collective Inkwell
Price: $0.99 on Kindle
☆/5
Blurb: On October 15 at 2:15 a.m. everyone on Earth vanished. Well, almost everyone. A scattered few woke alone in a world where there are no rules other than survival… at any cost. A journalist wanders the wretched reality of an empty New York, in search for his wife and son. A serial killer must hunt in a land where prey is now an endangered species. A mother shields her young daughter from danger, as every breath fills her with terror. A bullied teen is thrilled to find everyone gone. Until the knock on his door. A fugitive survives a fiery plane crash. Will he be redeemed, or return to what he’s best at: the kill? An eight year old boy sets out on a journey to find his missing family. What he finds will change him forever. And there’s a few people who aren’t surprised that this happened at all. In fact, they’ve been dreaming about this day for years. These survivors aren’t alone… Someone or something is watching them. And waiting… Strangers unite. Sides are chosen. Will humanity survive what it never saw coming? The only certainty is that Yesterday’s Gone.
Review: Yet another for the DNF list. I tried, I really did. I got through the first ‘episode’, which is the first book in this series and I was almost done with the second book, I had three more chapters. I just…I’m not all that inspired to keep reading.
I’m so disappointed in these two books that I’ve read after the X-Gen series, which was so good. I’m just bored. This had an interesting hook, I am kind of interested in what is going on, what could have happened, but I’m just not very inspired to keep going with the story.
There’s a…bit of a disclaimer on the rest of the blurb that I didn’t post, saying that this story has people doing evil things and contains disturbing scenes. Okay…that’s fine. I want books like that, that’s interesting stuff, I’m looking forward to it.

Xan's Feisty Mate
Tumblr media
Title: Xan’s Feisty Mate
Author: Elle Boon
Series: Iron Wolves MC Book 2
Published: January 26, 2016 by CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform
Price: $0.99 on Kindle
☆/5
Blurb: Breezy has loved Xan Carmichael for years, but she’s tired of trying to get him to notice her. She’s suffered long enough and is ready to move on. Xan didn’t want a mate, but when someone tries to harm the only woman who calls to him and his wolf, he’s ready to rip the world apart to keep her safe. The past has a way of coming back and haunting your present, and Breezy has just become the focus of a deranged killer. Will Xan and the rest of the Iron Wolves be able to save her before whoever is out to end her life succeeds, or will the stubborn alpha claim her in time?
Review: I’m bored…I’m so bored that I’m literally just skipping pages to see if I miss anything and I’m not missing anything. This is going to be added to the DNF pile.
I was thinking that it was going to be what it looked like, the cover promoting an erotic type of story and sure enough, that’s what it was. There was something different to it though, a mystery. Someone trying to kill Breezy. The mystery, plus a few interactions between Xan and a few of the men had me wanting to continue on. I had my thoughts on who it could be that wanted Breezy dead, but there’s always that thought of ‘what if I’m wrong?’ and you want to continue.

Dead Hand
Tumblr media
Title: Dead Hand
Author: Brad Magnarella
Series: X-Generation book 7
Published: February 19, 2016 by Brad Magnarella
Price: $3.99 on Kindle
☆☆☆☆☆/5
Blurb: A deranged leader self-chosen to propel the Soviet Union to sole superpower. A cunning kingpin determined to revive a perilous global arms race. A Champions Program in its final days — and harboring a traitor. A doomsday device called the Dead Hand. A countdown to all-out war. This is it.
Review: This was the longest book, but it didn’t really feel like it. I loved the story and the ending was pretty emotional, I could feel myself tearing up.
I love the cover on this one, really giving me the X-Men vibes that the author is going for. I really enjoyed this series and I’m so sad to see it end, I couldn’t imagine being there for when they came out and having to wait for the next book to come out.
I really want to check out his other series, this is how much the books have resonated with me. I want to see the other stories and see how they differ.

Title: Greatest Good
Series: X-Generation Book 6
Author: Brad Magnarella
Published: February 19, 2016 by Brad Magnarella
Price: $3.99 on Kindle
☆☆☆☆/5
Blurb: The Champions can’t seem to get a break. With U.S. victory at hand in the Cold War, enter the Scale, a deadly adversary determined to perpetuate the global arms race, nuclear war be damned. Reginald Perry, shapeshifter and survivor of the last generation of Champions, knows the Scale’s ruthlessness too well. Ordered to assassinate a Champion in exchange for his life, he is desperate to reunite with his old team. But his mortality is failing. And watching him is the Scale’s leader — warder of his medicine and a clairvoyant whose blood-red eyes see all. Janis’s own clairvoyance shows a teammate slain. A possible future, she tells herself. One that can be altered. On the backdrop of escalating global instability and a Champions Program fracturing from within, she and Scott must race to hunt down the Scale before becoming targets themselves. But will their supernatural efforts be enough?
Review: This was one of the most action packed ones in the series, good lord. Still enjoying myself, still being kept on the edge of my seat. I am loving this entire series still and I’m sad, so sad that I just have one more book to go.
Of course, being meant for the teen variety, so pretty simple on the details to get right into the action of it, but I’m so in love with this series and I’m 28. I know that I am very invested in this series and I want so much more. I just want to keep reading.

Cry Little Sister
Tumblr media
Title: Cry Little Sister
Author: Brad Magnarella
Series: X-Generation Book 5
Published: April 29, 2015 by Brad Magnarella
Price: $2.99 on Kindle
☆☆☆☆/5
Blurb: Murder Creek, pop. 4999. For Janis Graystone and Scott Spruel, it’s the vacation they’ve long needed. No superhero training. No nation saving. Just a week of rest and relaxation, even if it happens to be with Scott’s screwy parents. But when someone breaks into their beach house and dogs begin turning up blood-drained, the pair of Champions launch into action. Scott suspects vampires, namely the motorcycle-riding hoodlums who loiter in the town’s amusement park, while Janis’s intuition speaks to a more pervasive evil, one that lurks in the town’s shadowy past. Soon enmeshed in a murder mystery, Janis and Scott must scramble to piece the clues together before the killer strikes again. Or strikes them.
Review: Yet another book that I really enjoyed reading however, I would have liked a section or something to give the audience a bit of insight into what the others were doing. I guess I got used to the POV’s shifting from Janis and Scott to the other person it would be focused on, but I missed the other champions.
I wrote in my journal that i hadn’t started the next book yet, but I had a feeling that this little vacation wouldn’t be mentioned at all because it’s a stand alone and I was right. I’m on the 7th and last book now and there’s no mention, so I get why there’s no mention of the other Champions, but still, I missed them.

Silent Generation
Tumblr media
Title: Silent Generation
Series: X-Generation Book 3
Author: Brad Magnarella
Published: September 27, 2014 by Brad Magnarella
Price: $3.99 on Kindle
☆☆☆☆☆/5
Blurb: It’s decision time for the teens of Oakwood: join the Champions and develop their supernatural abilities or be expelled from the neighborhood — and each other’s lives — forever. For Janis, there are no clear answers. It doesn’t help that she and Scott, now girlfriend-boyfriend, disagree over the Program’s intentions. Janis just wants to know what happened to the last team. Is that so crazy? And why does Director Kilmer seem determined to keep that information a mystery? Flashback to 1961 Washington, D.C., where shape shifter Reginald Perry is struggling with his own questions. Namely, who’s assassinating his fellow Champions? His quest will carry him deep inside the nation’s power centers, but can he resurface before becoming a target himself? Or has someone already marked the last Champion from that era for death?
Review: This one is probably even better than the first book, You Don’t Know Me. I loved this one.
Is it bad that I’m rooting for the main couple to break up so Janis can get with Tyler? I’m feeling more of a connection between them than I am between her and Scott. I loved their interactions and I love Tyler. He’s a good boy.
This book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time, thinking about it while I was at work and needing to know what happens. I’m so glad that I stumbled across this series.
I don’t feel like I’m skipping over anything to get to the next part, I’m thinking about how the past books connect and I don’t feel like I’m forcing myself to continue on with something I’m not enjoying.

The Watchers
Tumblr media
Title: The Watchers
Series: X-Generation Book 2
Author: Brad Magnarella
Published: May 17, 2014 by Brad Magnarella
Price: $3.99 on Kindle
☆☆☆/5
Blurb: Being a telepath is no picnic, something Janis Graystone is learning firsthand. In the wake of a brutal attack and new warnings of a group with dark designs on her powers, Janis finds herself withdrawing from those closest to her — even the friend she’s falling for. Scott Spruel senses Janis’s growing distance, and he’ll do anything to help her. That’s what friends are for, right? But will using his powers only cement his deadly fate — the one Janis is trying to protect him from? Bad boy Tyler Bast has a secret. A few of them, actually. But what if someone else knows What Happened? The answer could destroy him. After all, some deeds are best left buried. As menaces converge and choices dwindle, Janis, Scott, and Tyler must decide: hide their powers or risk everything to confront… The Watchers.
Review: I like that this was focused on another character and I think the cover for this one is a little more eye-catching than the first one, but I do wish that it had focused more on him. He didn’t seem to get a lot of screen time in a book that bares his likeness on the cover and so he felt a little more like a side-character that we were learning about along with the main characters.
I enjoyed myself once again with this book, I loved reading the mystery and feeling that suspense. I could feel the tension.

You Don't Know Me
Tumblr media
Title: You Don’t Know Me
Series: X Generation Book 1
Author: Brad Magnarella
Published: November 7, 2014 by Brad Magnarella
Price: $2.99 on Kindle
☆☆☆☆/5
Blurb: In the fall of 1984, Cold War tensions between Washington and Moscow are close to breaking. But in sleepy Gainesville, Florida, fourteen-year-old Janis Graystone is mainly worried about starting high school, earning a spot on the varsity soccer team, and keeping her older sister from running her life. And then there are her paranormal experiences. Experiences where she awakens in her backyard — out of her body — with the disturbing sense that someone is watching her. For Scott Spruel, the start of high school means the chance to start over. And he’s willing to ditch everything — computer hacking, Dungeons & Dragons marathons, even his comic book collection (well, except for his X-Men) — if it means getting closer to Janis, the secret love of his life. But what about the eerie delay on his telephone, a delay he senses through powers he is only beginning to understand? As clocks tick down, Janis and Scott will need the other’s help. But first they’ll have to find one another and that means traversing Thirteenth Street High’s caste system, which can be as brutal as it is unforgiving…
Review: I honestly didn’t think that I would enjoy this book as much as I did. Starting it, it felt a little slow and I didn’t like the stalker vibe I had from Scott. It felt like a slice-of-life with just the tiniest hint of powers.
Another thing that I wasn’t all that interested in was the brief history lessons. I didn’t do so well in my history classes in high school or college, so being sent back there wasn’t all that fun.
Somewhere along the line though, and I don’t know where, I was getting really engaged with the story. I was invested and getting lost in it, thinking about it when I had to set it down. I wanted to know what was going to happen next and the suspense kicked up for me.

Xoe

\Title: Xoe: or Vampires, and Werewolves, and Demons, Oh My!
Series: Xoe Meyers Book 1
Author: Sara C. Roethle
Published: October 3, 2009 by Vulture’s Eye Publications
Price: Free on Kindle
☆☆/5
Blurb: Xoe Meyers had a normal life. So she was stuck going to high school, and she only had a few friends to call her own. She liked her normal life. Things were about to change though, because there’s a new guy in her small town, and he is anything but normal. Before Xoe can say, “Werewolf,” her best friend’s life is in peril, and Xoe’s world is turned upside-down. Then, of course, there’s Jason. Xoe doesn’t trust him as far as she can throw him, and given that he’s a vampire, she’d have to be able to catch him first.
Review: I…didn’t really like this book. It dragged so many things out that the vampire didn’t show up until chapter 8, nearly half-way through. So, because of that, the romance between said vampire and Xoe suffered so much. Not to mention there was such a lack of emotion from both characters and the writing it felt like.
Honestly, this felt like someone trying to do a re-write of Twilight to include being able to turn people into werewolves and demons.
I think it would have been a bit better had most of the things being dragged out been condensed and Jason introduced much sooner, to give the audience more time with Jason and Xoe.

Vengeful in Love

Title: Vengeful in Love {Alternate title}
Series: Seduced by the Billionaire Book 1
Author: Nadia Lee
Published: February 17, 2011 by Nadia Lee
Price: $3.99 on Kindle.
☆☆☆/5
Blurb: Revenge is sweet... Self-made billionaire Alex Damon wants his pound of flesh from the people who ripped his family apart. When he discovers his enemies’ daughter is working at his company — and most likely spying for them — he decides to start his revenge by seducing her. Natalie Hall is stunned at the personal interest from the CEO of her company. Vulnerable, with an already bruised heart, she wants to avoid any involvement — but she can’t deny the desire he arouses in her. ...but love is sweeter… What should’ve been a straightforward eye-for-an-eye starts to unravel as Natalie’s unflinching loyalty and kindness begin to thaw Alex’s cold intent. But caring for her is unthinkable…since he plans to use everything in his power to ruin her family and everyone else she holds dear.
Review: “Sam,” you may be wondering. “Why does your title say Vengeful in Love but the picture you posted say The Billionaire’s Revenge?” That, my fellow book dragons, is an excellent question. This book, if you were to go to the Goodreads page linked above, has four different titles and four different covers. Vengeful in Love is how I have it written in my book journal, and that’s how I’m going to refer to it here. Now that I have that out of the way, on to the review!
Not really sure how I feel about this. It kind of felt like insta-love, but there were at least a week between some meetings? They didn’t talk during those weeks though, so I say it qualifies for insta-love. Now, I really enjoyed the slow moments, where they were just talking and getting to know each other, far more than the heated moments. I don’t know, I guess I’m just a slow burn person.
Case in point; They had spoken twice and there was a heated kiss. I didn’t like it. It seemed forced and I wish they had at least had some more tension before that.
This book was alright, it didn’t leave any lasting impression on me and I knew the villain before the reveal, it was pretty obvious and kind of clumsy

Review: Okay, now I know what you’re thinking…’Samantha…WHY are you reading a CHRISTMAS book in April?’ and you’d be right to wonder that. I wondered that very same thing myself. I have a perfectly good reason as to why I put myself to thinking about Christmas when it’s no where near time. Because of my book journal. You see, my dear fellow readers, this journal is in alphabetical order and I had already written this particular title in long ago. Probably when I was reading Her Dark Angel by Felicity Heaton, of which I did a review back in 2015…six years ago. Jeezums. Anyway, I am pretty much caught up on all my review requests and all the books that I had already read, but hadn’t gotten around to putting the reviews up when I hit my major slump. So what do I do now? Well, fellow book dragons, I go through my book journals, where I’ve written down entries for a lot of the books I downloaded on my kindle. This one was just next in line! Now that you know why I’ve subjected you to the torture of thinking about Christmas in April, on to my review!
I have got to say that I love this author. Everything that I’ve read by her…which I think is…only three books? I think? She hasn’t disappointed me though! I’ve really enjoyed my time reading her books and I think she’s getting up there to being a favorite author, right there with Christine Feehan.
Now, this is a stand alone short story, so the expectation for insta-love and insta-everything was there, however this author did an excellent job at creating a time line for these characters spending time with each other for two years, building up that relationship, giving the audience that connection. I could feel the emotion coming from them. It felt realistic in the midst of vampires and demons

Blurb: Na-Leigh was an ordinary girl who led an ordinary life. Until one fateful night, the very mysterious Rujcharm d’ Varq crashed into her ordinary world. He shook the very foundation of it with his extraordinary claim. Should she accept his claim and conform her mind to his extraordinary world?
Review: This book was a gift from the author in exchange for an honest review and I am sorry, but this was a DNF for me. I got about 3 pages into Chapter 3 after almost a month of not reading it and I just had to stop.
I love that people are putting themselves out there and publishing their creations themselves, I would love to see more people do it and keep at it, but I really think this could have benefited from a lot more editing and proof-reading.
Friends and family that don’t mind reading over things for you and helping you edit things. Even the author of a book can proof-read and edit. Just leaving something alone for a while and then coming back and reading over it.

Untamed

Title: Untamed
Series: The Wild Women Book 1
Author: Sharon Ihle
Published: September 1, 1999 by Zebra
Price: $2.99 on Kindle.
☆☆☆/5
Blurb: Shunned by her family, kidnapped by Indians, a young woman learns to stand on her own two feet…even as a handsome rancher sweeps them out from under her. GOOD MEDICINE: Working as a laundress at Lola’s Pleasure Palace, Josie Baum doesn’t know anything about playing nursemaid. But when a Cheyenne warrior whisks her off to care for his friend, Daniel McCord, she doesn’t have a choice. Suddenly Josie is alone in a remote mountain cabin with a man who expects her to do all of his household chores—and cater to his every whim. After many years of cooking and cleaning for her fifteen step-brothers and father, she isn’t about to spend the rest of her days serving someone as pompous as Daniel McCord…even if he did happen to quicken her pulse every time he was near. FOR A PROUD MAN ON THE MEND: Half-Cheyenne, Daniel has only one desire—to right the wrongs done to his people. He isn’t ready for the new hunger that stirs deep within him at the sight of Josie’s glowing, fair-skinned liveliness or her resistance to his charms. But determined to melt the heart of this willful, intoxicating beauty, he will use every skill of seduction to make her his.
Review: I feel like…I’m always dragging the slice of life books, the ‘normal’ ones, the ones that aren’t paranormal or spooky or anything. That’s because all the ones I’ve been reading have not been up to par. Well, I finally found one that I actually liked and…does it say anything about me that I like these trashy romances? You know the ones, the ones we all made fun of as a kid because the moms read these. I don’t care though, I apparently really enjoy these trashy romances, the ones written in the 90’s and I think it’s because they don’t focus on the surface level of things. I’m getting emotion from all parties involved, I’m invested in these characters.
