Running has taught me, perhaps more than anything else, that there’s no reason to fear starting lines…. or other new beginnings.

I did the thing again 💁🏽 I'll attempt to keep it brief. We know how much I struggle with that tho...
April 21 Friday was my first trip to bikram yoga, and I was very very nervous. I had never been to bikram yoga, and it would have been only my second official yoga class ever. The other class I had taken was with a friend at the studio near our school, and it was just a regular hot vinyasa class. That instructor made me feel very welcomed and very capable, and it was a way smaller class, so she actually came over and helped me with my poses. All I knew was that bikram was hotter than the regular hot class, it had a series of 26 poses that you cycled through, and that you sweat out like your whole body weight over the 75 minutes. Sweet.
Showed up like 3 minutes before (in shorts, btw, #nsv for me), and the room was packed, mostly full of people in shavasana. I had to squeeze in a spot by the heater (kill me) and it seemed to me like the class was 85% regulars. I would soon learn that my instinct was hella correct. We were asked who was new, and out of like literally 35-40 people, I was the only one. Thought that meant she could help me. Nope. We went through the breathing exercise and went off into the poses after a few minutes. I had already begun to feel a little lightheaded, but my fear of looking dumb focused me. I looked up and noticed my instructor didn't even do single pose. How am I supposed to know what to do, or the proper form?? She would talk, walk around, and actually scroll through her phone... like I know it's 5:30 on a Friday but you signed up for this shit. You don't get to do that. She also made a lot of inside jokes with the regulars, some whom I later believed to be other instructors, and like did not encourage modification. She was like I know you can push further, so do it. Like HOMIE that is not what you're supposed to do, especially if you're new!! She was very serious about no talking or making noise, so she only came over to the guy next to me who kept cursing when his grip would slip to help him modify.
Things I found out: A, you need like a legit swimming towel or actual full size yoga towel for this kind of yoga because I felt like I was drowning in sweat. I had to wring out my shirt and shorts when I left. B, you're pretty much on your own at this studio, even if it says "all levels." They were not helpful for new people. C, it's a great detox, if you can get past the fact that you may not be able to hold any of your poses because your body is so slick from sweat. My forearms ended up being sore for the next two days because of how much I was straining to hold onto my poses. D, you should not be alarmed by how much it sounds like snakes are in the room whenever you do an open-mouth exhale. I was for a lot of the class, and it was SO distracting because I thought it was funny. Some people go really hard. And I mean REALLY hard with the breathing.
I think the only reason I would go back would be to go with a friend, and definitely another instructor. Sorry, Robyn. I want a chick who gives a shit about my class. She did end on a funny song, though. +1 for you.
Spent the rest of the evening being productive, doing laundry and cleaning my room. It was a glorious Friday night.

April 22 It was supposed to rain all day Saturday, and I was anxious bc I had another long run. I really wanted to meet up with CFG again, though, so I forced myself out of bed, put on a hat and jacket, and hoped for the best. When I got to Dilworth, I coudln't find the group anywhere, and I waited until the last possible second, but decided the weather must've detered most people, or they left already, so I set out on my own. This 6.5 miles sucked so much more than last week's great 7 mile run. Maybe it was the weather or fatigue, but I just was not feeling the groove. I stopped for a hot second on Kelly Drive to breathe and to check out some of the statues and stuff. In hindsight, those pictures are very uneventful. At my halfway point, it started raining and I was like ughhhhhhh well at least I had that hat. This run felt so much harder than my last long run, and I wonder if it's just because my body's like YOU NEED TO CHILL OUT. At the last mile, though, I had a great few songs push me through, including Guns and Ships from Hamilton and What Do U Mean (I'm a sucker for Bieber). I finished around city hall, where there was an Earth Day protest going on. It's kinda cool that every weekend there are a lot of people around my city screaming about how much 45 sucks.
Later I got Snap pizza with friends and did not feel guilty about it whatsoever.

April 23 Sunday was so much nicer out than Saturday, which was an excellent motivator to get me to FlyWheel. This was my second spin class, and first at FlyWheel. First impressions were amazing: you walk down the steps into like this pit, where they give you cycling shoes and there's a shop (I wanted everything even though I knew I wouldn't become an avid spinner bc $$, BUT EVERYTHING WAS SO CUTE). Then you find your bike in "the stadium" and wait until the staff is finished cleaning the bikes and putting out fresh towels to hop on. I got help from one of the staff, and thankfully this bike felt more comfortable than my first ride. Looking down, I saw these two pole things on the side of my bike, and a cool electronic torq tracker. I loved that you could opt into the torq board beforehand so you wouldn't be stressed about putting it in day-of. Suddenly, the lights went off and we were off. My instructor was super motivating and friendly, pushing us through a series of hills and sprints. I was happy that I had taken a spin class before, though, because I knew the positions when the she called them out. I admittedly signed up for her class specifically because on her profile she said she sang a cappella in her free time, so I was hoping she'd either A, have a great playlist, and / or B, sing throughout some of the songs lol. She started us out of "Wop" which I hadn't heard in like 6 years, so I was happy about that. On the penultimate song, she had us grab the bars next to our bikes and do an arms workout, which was surprisingly tough to focus on both the legs and arms at the same time. At the end I felt really good, definitely exhausted, but like I could go back the next day for sure. Absolutely one of my favorite workout classes I've ever taken. I see why people catch the bug now.
After class, I hung out at TJU for a bit before showering and going to Rittenhouse to hang out in the park. Since it was World Book Day, I bought both You Are a Badass (which is definitely going to change my life, if not give me some awesome quotes to live by) and Bossypants. I was feeling the energy. I was also thankful I brought my journal to the park, bc this one guy came up to me randomly and started hitting on me for like 10 minutes and I clearly did not want him there, so I wrote a whole bunch of pages about the entitlement of men and how some people must give off "please bother me" vibes. Overall great day, though, because I was happy I was getting back into writing.

Also worked out yesterday, but I don't feel like writing about that rn. It was uneventful, other than my Nike Run Club app being annoying and not properly recording my treadmill tempo run. What's new. Today I'm giving myself my first full day off from working out in what feels like 2 months, so I'm very excited to not do anything. Also had a free bagel this morning because my work was giving them out. BLESSSSSSSS.

April 20 Ugh I need a break. Literally this is my 36th day in a row working out and it's really catching up with me. I feel lethargic throughout the day, feel a bit of energy burst for the workout, and then as soon as it's over, I crash. Legit went to bed at 9pm last night. I barely have enough energy to eat when I get home. Woooooof. I guess this is what I get for not drinking coffee like most sane adults. Next Tuesday I'm gonna try to just walk and not workout, and then I want to take a day off next Friday because it's gonna be so nice. Hopefully then I'll have my energy back.
Yesterday was leg day right after my run with CFG, AND sprints day. That also was a major factor in my fatigue. My whole body felt kinda sore, but the leg exercises I chose actually made my legs burn for the first time in a while, which was nice. Sprinting after that for 12 rounds with 3:15 in between was torture though. I got to sprint #6 or #7 and I was like HOW AM I NOT DONE YET???? Of course Nike doesn't record your whole run when you're doing speed runs, but my FitBit told me I did around 4.58 miles (the day after doing 6? And doing 6.5 on Saturday? I may have a death wish) total, with 1.52 miles of sprints. At least I know I still have it in me to run that fast - I was only scheduled to average 7'33" min / mi sprints. Cool.
Today is my hot yoga class so hopefully I'll get to stretch out my back and legs really well, they're feeling tight today.
Leg Day 3x each 15 reps squat jumps 15 reps barbell deadlifts, 20# + bar weight 10 reps lunge-kicks 10 reps pop jacks 15 reps plié squats 15 reps donkey kicks, alt. sides 20 reps lying leg lifts 20 reps plank jacks 15 reps dumbbell swings, 15#
1.52 mi 6'52" min / mi (for my sprints)

April 19 Guys. I love running. More specifically, I love running with WOMEN. Yesterday is a day I want to remember, because this is the start of something really really cool that I hope to keep up with for a long time.
Earlier in the day I was feeling so sluggish; the 3pm wave of exhaustion hit me like a freight train, and I was so excited to do a quick arms session and get on home. It was Wednesday, which was supposed to be my 3 mile recovery day in prep for a speed run today and long run on Saturday. My ankle was really acting up from yesterday, so I was nervous to use it a lot, but I had been stretching all day so I assumed it was fine. Then I remembered the sign I had seen at Dilworth about City Fit Girls Run Club, a group that meets on Wednesdays and Saturdays for 3-5 mile runs and long runs respectively. It's a group of only women for all levels of fitness and all speeds, you just gotta be able to stick with the route and complete the whole thing. I have been really wanting to find someone to run with consistently, since I've never really done it before, and I had a run on the books anyway, so I took my stuff and headed for Center City.
Wow. I can honestly say I've never walked into a group of people and felt so welcomed immediately. There were clearly people who knew each other, but everyone was really eager to talk to and ask questions for the new people. The group was about 40 girls strong today, ages ranging from about my age to maybe 40, but someone told me the group gets huge when it's actually nice out. The plan today was to run the Ben Franklin Bridge, (and you could opt out, which would total 3 miles, go halfway and total 4, or do the full thing to get to 5) then meet at Weckerly's ice cream in Fishtown. Ice cream at the finish line? Sign me up.
The rules were pretty simple: no headphones, no running through red stoplights, and no girl gets left behind. I was nervous to run without headphones since I typically use music as not only a motivator but a pacer, but there were so many other girls and the goal was to have a conversation with someone new, so I figured it would be fine. I stuck with one woman named Kate for most of the run, she was really cool. We decided to do the whole bridge, and when we passed other girls in the group, she whooped and cheered for them as if they were running a marathon. I felt so good and so encouraged. Throughout the run, I talked with a bunch of other girls, some new and old, whose stories were awesome and legit so inspiring. Most were training for Broad Street or some other big run, some had run marathons before, some were in the army trying to prepare for training, and everyone was so in it for the right reasons: just to feel good, support each other, and have fun.
At the end, the group that ran the whole bridge ended up doing approximately 6 miles (LIKE THE MILEAGE I DID ON SATURDAY !!), and it felt great. We got ice cream which tasted 3000x better after earning it, and said goodbye until next time. My ankles didn't hurt at all during the run, which was a total relief. Next time, though, I may want to bring a water and/or a protein bar bc I didn't get home until an hour after we stopped, and you need to refuel ASAP rocky after such a long stint.
I love that you can choose whatever distance you want. I love that the whole purpose is to meet new people and motivate each other to push yourself past what we thought was possible, but reward yourself at the end. I (surprisingly) love that you can't have music. I love that the routes change every day. I love that, as a competitive person, I can stick with the pacers, or chill if I'm not having a good day. I love that I can talk running with these girls, because I haven't been able to do that with anyone since I started training seriously. I love that they're all over social media, building a community of girls who inspire, encourage, vent, and love. I love that it's all WOMEN, because women kick ass.
I love this. I'm coming back Saturday for my long run. This is the kind of stuff I need in my life.
Arms Workout 3x each 15 reps tricep kickbacks, alt. sides, 6# 15 reps cross body curls, alt. sides, 8# 15 reps front back bunch, alt. sides, 6# 15 reps squat curls, 10# 10 reps reverse lunge press, alt. sides, 8# 15 reps hammer curls, 10# 15 reps dumbbell flys, 8# 15 reps bent over rows, 8# 15 reps tricep overhead extensions, 10#

April 18 Today was my OrangeTheory class trial and I have a few thoughts about it.
Differentiators for this one: - Rowing machines + real water! Super cool, but I was annoyed at how long it took me to strap in and out when we had to get up and do other things. It broke my concentration and momentum. Would've loved to just straight row for 10 minutes. Could just be my class though. - Personalized graphs emailed to you after every class. They used similar heart rate monitors as Afterburn (it's the same theory essentially), where you're supposed to be in the "orange zone" for 12-20 minutes of the workout in order to burn up to 400 extra calories over the next 24 hours. Cool idea, but my HR monitor was not working right, and the instructor even said she def thinks mine was broken. My FitBit was definitely more accurate. I hate the ones that go under your shirt, they're just uncomfy. - Instructors don't do the workouts with you, they just talk. Gretchen was super nice and informative, but it seemed like she was distracted a bit. Definitely wish she was more hands on, especially on the floor with the weights. - Sets are on a screen, so if you forget, they're right there. - Treadmills are touchscreen and have a bounce! Very different from the Woodway ones from the other classes. I liked that you could just input your speed instead of cranking it up notch by notch. - One full hour of workout plus 5 minute stretch instead of 45 minutes and a stretch. I really had to push it to keep my energy up for the last treads set.
For one of the floor sets, we used a bosu ball to do some stuff, and I forgot how much focus you need to use them. We had to do speed steps for one, and I definitely think I twisted my ankle a bit by not properly stepping all the way off it 😰 bc it's way sore today.
I liked the concept of the class and the lighting (all orange, obvi) and equipment a lot. I understand the craze behind this because once you're done you're like OMG I did it wow let me go shower off and sleep and then you walk out and you're like WOW I wanna come back. The membership is HELLA expensive, and I'm not sure I want to add a class like this more than once a week at this point, and I can honestly use my ClassPass in smarter ways than this, so I'm gonna stick with that for now, I think. At least until I finish my half training. But definitely a fun alternative to pounding it out in the gym and on the trail!
Also I was on my way back from class and I had to eat something ASAP so I had a plum in my bag but was still hungry so I went to the grocery store and bought kombucha cause I was like oh, this is trendy and it's supposed to be good for you. I tried it... HOLY EFFFFING SHIT. IT'S DISGUSTING. I dislike carbonated things first of all, and then you open it and it smells like alcohol. My flavor is gingerberry, so I was expecting it to taste like berry iced tea (because that's how it was described to me). WRONG. SO WRONG. It's like carbonated mixed drink that's been sitting out for a few days but is somehow still bubbly. Blech. Now that I paid for it I'm forcing myself to drink it tho, so I brought it with me to work today. Here's to hoping my tastebuds change their minds!

April 17 Black shirt and navy shoes??? Blech! O well at least I’m p cute 😝
Yesterday was a core sesh plus a benchmark run for my program. Pretty boring, lots of obliques stuff, though at the end of my workout I felt SUPER lightheaded like thought I was gonna pass out kinda lightheaded. Idk why, my lunch was very big and healthy, and I had had like 3 full 32 oz waters by that time… whatever, I guess, it just screwed up my balance for my thread the needles a lot lol. Benchmark run felt easy, though I really pushed myself for the three minutes so that the cooldown felt necessary. Ended up tacking on another 1.5 miles for a total of a little less than 3. It feels weird not to run more than a mile and a half now haha so I took the time to stretch my legs a bit. Seems like the warmups from that video I watched are helping to keep my ankle pain to a minimum!
Last night I also had an adventure cooking fresh Italian sausage for the first time by myself. It ended up being very good, but it took forever lol and it was pretty greasy on my plate so I didn’t get a good picture. So instead, here’s my beautiful salad from Sunday night, which I ate partially bc I felt guilty about the rolled ice cream I got with Ani earlier 😅
Another HIIT class tonight, OrangeTheory! I really still like RippedPHL, so it needs to be able to top that one. It’s not on ClassPass, but I got a free class just because I signed up to get one online 😌 it’s amazing how many things are free if you ask!
Core workout 3x each 20 reps toe touches 20 reps plank leg lifts 15 reps wood chops, alt. sides, 8# 60 reps heel touches 15 reps side plank hip-ups, alt. sides 30 reps slow bicycle crunches 30 reps alternating leg lifts 15 reps dumbbell side bends, alt. sides, 15# 10 reps thread the needle, alt. sides
