One of my favorite Elrond headcanons is the idea that he starts out looking very much human and elvish. He has ears too pointed to be a man's, but not nearly long enough to be an elf's, his father's (grandfather's, really) blue eyes and brown hair that shines like an elf's, but gets tangled far too often.
Sure, some weird things happen around Elrond as a child– the birds that seems to follow him, the way some injuries mysteriously resolve in his prescense, the unusual flowers that bloom outside his windows– but really, it's easy to see those as distant remnants of an ainuric power that Elrond clearly didn't inherit. When he comes to Gil-Galad's camp, it's much easier for them to see Tuor or Beren in him than it is to think he's descended from Melian.
But then time passes. The changes are slow enough– happening over decades or centuries– that no one really notices at first. Elrond's hair darkens until it is as black as the night sky– as black as Luthien's was. His eyes leach color until they are gray– not Noldor gray, mind, but a strange, starry gray that some of the Iathrim whisper about. His voice changes, almost seems to take on an echo of itself, sometimes.
The strange things that happen around him only get stranger– the trees bend to shelter him, during storms, and sometimes when he sings, the birds sing with him. Elrond got a cat, right at the start of the Second Age– a gift from Gil-Galad. Somehow, it never seems to grow old or die. The parts of Lindon Elrond most often visits always seem to be in full bloom, no matter what season it is. His healing abilities surpass what is to be expected of a man– an elf– eventually, of what seems possible at all.
At the end of the First Age, it would've been hard to believe Elrond had more than a trickle of ainur blood in him. By the beginning of the Third Age, many have started to whisper about Rivendell– a new Doriath, ruled by a Maiarin lord with all Melian's grace, and her eccentricities.
Elrond doesn't realize just how much he's changed until the day, late in the Third Age, when he finds Maglor wandering on the shoreline. Nothing he says will convince Maglor that he isn't Luthien's spirit, returned from death to haunt him.

Link
by Melesta, polutropos
In the aftermath of their tumultuous arrival in Beleriand, Maglor has scarcely managed to hold together the bruised and splintering House of Fëanor and their Sindarin allies.
Then, the Sun’s first rising brings with it Fingolfin’s host of Ice-hardened Noldor, hungry for retribution. With battered hearts and fraying minds, the two half-kings must navigate the fragile relations even as they face the impossible task of reuniting the Noldor under a single leader.

TRSB time is here again — a good time to read (or reread) past TRSB fics! I love this fic so much!!
Throwback Thursday
Thanks to @sallysavestheday for the tag to re-share my 2023 TRSB piece in light of the recent gallery opening.
Atanatárssë (T: 16,914 words)
Written for @anerea-lantiria's gorgeous art (below and embedded in the piece).
In Nargothrond in the First Age, Bëor wrote down the oral tradition of his people to pass on to his younger son, Belen. Throughout the rest of that age and the next, his descendants preserve this book through grief and joy, war and cataclysm, from the highlands of Dorthonion to the fall of Númenor, and reencounter the mythology of their people in the ongoing dance of memory and immortality.

“Do ye hold that you speak with them, then? Those dead who have gone forth before thee?” Aikanáro had watched her, mesmerized as the quern ran its rounds beneath her hands. “Speak with them? Nay. But it is in memory that we carry them onward, holding life for them yet, by and within our own.” She had fallen silent for a long moment, then met his eye in a quick glance, sharp and searching. “By such we scorn fate’s maw, and make them deathless as thee.” Now Andreth ground the wheat in defiance. Her muscles burned as she gripped the haft and hauled the quern round and back again, each pass now a rumble of anger. Aegnor would no longer stand beside the whirling stone, his shoulder would not rest again upon the carved post beside the window, nor his eyes dart along with the work of her hands. For all his assertions that memory was the task of the Eldar, he had scorned its worth in the end. The final grains of wheat scuttled down through the eye and at last the stone slowed, fell still. Andreth stepped back, breathing heavily, and wiped the sweat from her forehead. It eased her restlessness to set the fury within these daily tasks, her pain beaten into the washing, her tears carded into the new-sheared wool, her anger spinning and cracking and shattering the kernels of grain till it formed a new substance, soft and bright and filled with possibility.
Tagging @that-angry-noldo, @searchingforserendipity25, @welcomingdisaster, and @thelordofgifs to re-share your fics too, if you'd like!

while I initially just thought of the inanimate aspects of light and air, sea, and stars, @sallysavestheday went and breathed life into them through the characters who observed and experienced the elements. Thanks so much for this magic! Collaboration is such fun!
Joyful Collaborations!
I had the pleasure of working with the marvelous Anérea on this month's SWG challenge, It Comes in Threes. We combined her beautiful photos and my drabbles, for a multimedia exploration of the skies and moods of Arda.
Here's a teaser image:

Day 7: Freeform
Tumblr media
I keep thinking about how weird it was, that Gandalf landed in that fireball in RoP an I wondered how that worked. Well the answer obviously is Manwe with a granade/Maiar launcher!
(Manwe: Are you ready, Olorin?
Olorin, in the granade launcher: Yup!)

Tol Sirion
I couldn't make any progress on the current writing WIP until I figured out some logistics for the island, so here's my best shot at a sketch of Tol Sirion with Minas Tirith looking out toward the north of the pass. (I did keep Tolkien's funky lil gnome-hat roofs because I love them.)
Even the great "house" of Finrod, Minas Tirith, as its name "Tower of Watch" signifies, on an island in Sirion, was primarily a fort intended to command the accesses into Beleriand from the North.

Chapter 3: Elrond, Elros, and Gwereth are brought back to the Fëanorian camp. Maglor explains his decision to Maedhros.
On AO3
Chapter excerpt:
All his life Elrond had learned to fear orcs and wolves and dragons. He had only seen these monsters in paintings and wood carvings and the pictures the elf-singers painted in his mind. At first, when the warrior-elves attacked them, he had thought they were orcs, and he did not understand. How could it be? They had the Silmaril. They were safe. “No, my loves,” his mother had said when Elrond asked, “they are not the Enemy’s servants — they are his enemies, as we are, though they serve his purposes. They are elves. Fallen elves who have malice in their hearts, but elves all the same.” Why would enemies of their Enemy make war upon them?
