Anastasia: SortingHatChats
Hey, guys, I back now.
Anastasia time.
So, as a DISCLAIMER: THIS FILM IS A WORK OF FICTION. I highly recommend looking into the actual history behind the film if you're interested!
Here we go!
(I seem to recall there being a sorting already posted of Anastasia, but I remember disagreeing with most of it? Absolutely no offense meant to whoever originally posted it! These are just my two cents!)
ANASTASIA/ANYA
Tumblr media
BADGER PRIMARY
Anya's entire storyline revolves around the ideas of "family," "home," and "belonging." Not just her own, personal family (which would be Snake,) not necessarily the home she remembers being born into (as far as she knows, she's an orphan,) and not only her own state of belonging. She deals in the concept of these things as though they were basic necessities: everyone should want them, and she wants them because everyone needs them in order to be whole. This is truth to her, full stop.
Anya: "Do you think you're gonna miss it?"
Dimitri: "Miss what, your talking?
Anya: "No! Russia."
Dimitri: "Nope."
Anya: "But it was your home!"
Dimitri: It was a place I once lived. End of story."
Anya: "Well, then you must plan on making Paris your true home."
Dimitri: "What is it with you and homes?!"
Anya: "Well, for one thing, it's something that every normal person wants!"
This is not a belief system, nor is it a conclusion she's come to. It's something that is such a part of her make up as a human being, that to imagine that another person doesn't care about the concept of a "true home" or "true community" is downright disturbing to her. Her desire for "home, love, family" is not her trying to seek out individuals she already knows, but to find the space she came from, filled with strangers she's never met, but who she believes will accept her through the power of community. It reads very animated Hercules, often dreaming of a far off place where a voice keeps saying, THIS is where I'm meant to be. Badger Primaries love the idea of having a secret family they've never met that will swoop in and carry them away, loving them unconditionally, when the world immediately around them has been so cruel. Lonely Badger Primaries are the perfect characters to fall in love with the idea of being long lost royalty. The main character arc Anya goes through is learning that family is not just the people who gave birth to you: Found family is not only just as powerful, but can become even moreso over time. This is the same moral the animated Hercules learns! Belonging and community is created and watered like a garden: If you keep searching for your perfect, idealized community, you might miss the one forming right before your eyes.
Tumblr media
LION SECONDARY
It doesn't take long to pin Anya as a rather loud Lion Secondary. She is unafraid to voice her opinions, and often does so in a blunt and unashamed way. SShe absolutely DESPISES lying, and she is the first to take the easiest, most straight forward way out.
Dimitri: (trying to detach a traincar after breaking multiple tools) "COME ON, there's gotta be something in there better than this!!"
Anya: (wordlessly hands Dimitri a stick of lit dynamite)
Dimitri: "That'll work!"
What this movie actual shows is an interesting, not as often explored aspect of the Badger Lion, which is how the brash and straightforward nature of the Lion Secondary can work against the desires of the Badger Primary. Anya longs for nothing more than home and community, but often inadvertently (and not so inadvertently) alienates those around her with her cutting phrasing. It takes a more grounded, good listener like Vlad to see past Anya's brashness almost immediately, understanding the intentions behind her bravado.
Vlad: "I see an engaging and fiery young woman, who on a number of occasions has shown a regal command equal to any royal in the world!"
DIMITRI
Tumblr media
SNAKE PRIMARY (Initially Burnt)
Dimitri's storyline is a bit deeper than many people might initially realize. What we're looking at is a Snake Primary who, at a very young age, tried to save one of their People (the Princess Anastasia, for whom he is implied to have either a childhood friendship with or just a faraway crush,) and failed, horribly. In fact, they failed to the point that they believe they are at least partially to blame for the death of that Person. That's about as deep and dark of a hole as a Snake Primary can fall into, so the Snake Primary will, naturally, Burn and find new, non-Person things to fill that void. Namely, recognition and fortune.
Dimitri: "Imagine the reward her dear old grandmama will pay!"
Of course, this could point to Glory Hound Lion, just as easily. If not for his Snake Primary sneaking in at every possible moment. The line following that one above is:
Dimitri: "Who else could pull it off but you and me?"
The "you" in question being Vlad, the only other Person Dimitri has allowed in (and by "allowed in," I always assumed got so tired of Vlad actively FORCING HIMSELF into Dimitri's life that he acquiesced and decided to just let him stay.) But, Dimitri's obsession with the Princess Anastasia continues, against all odds. His latest con? Directly Princess Anastasia related. Is it enough for the woman they hire to play her be "good enough?" NO. She has to be PERFECT. They hold AUDITIONS, and Dimitri is the perfect person to be on the board, because Dimitri still knows her intimately well, even after all these years. Such as hum recognizing Anastasia's face in Anya's right from the start. Thus, comes Dimitri's initial inner turmoil in regards to Anya: Are his feelings just projection? Is he attracted to her JUST because she looks like Anastasia? Is he ACTUALLY that obsessed? All those questions become moot when Anya is revealed to truly be Anastasia, though Dimitri finds himself where he was as a boy. From this point on in the movie, pretty much every motivation/choice Dimitri makes revolves around the fact that Anya IS Anastasia, and that he is going to give her what she wants and deserves, no matter what it takes. Even if that means keeping himself away from her romantically. His character arc revolves around forgiving himself for what he perceived as a dire mistake against one of his People, which is a ROUGH arc for a Snake to go through.
Dimitri: "Paris holds the key to her past. Yes, Princess, I've found you at last! No more pretend. You'll be gone, that's the end..."
Tumblr media
SNAKE SECONDARY
Dimitri is actually quite a good con, all things considered. He manages to trick Anya into thinking they have train tickets when they DEFINITELY do not, and he keeps the reward under wraps for the entirety of their trip. Not just that, but dodging around obstacles instead of facing them head on is his most natural state. As a child, he is seen sneaking out of the kitchens (where be belongs) and automatically offering the servants' quarters as a means of escape, which is extremely clever and resourceful. Dimitri tries to charm and placate Anya at every turn, trying to keep her naturally explosive personality under wraps.
Anya: "The baggage car...? There wouldn't be anything wrong with our papers now, would there, maestro..?"
Dimitri: "Of course not, Your Grace! It's just that I hate to see you forced to mingle with all those commoners..."
But, we spend most of the film seeing Dimitri forced out of his comfort zone by both the situation and Anya's combative Lion Secondary, so he's often seen conspiratorially complaining to Vlad while in his Neutral State or just outright losing his temper and yelling. But, this never comes first, and his plans and plots are always somewhat circumventing. During the train derailment, his plans are to jump off, disconnect the train cars, and just wait until the train coasts to a stop. All pretty passive/out of the box thinking. When he IS shown trying to face someone head on, he is always unsuccessful: Trying to fight for Anastasia during the siege only to be immediately knocked out, trying to take on Rasputin directly and being tossed aside pretty easily. Comparatively, Anya/Anastasia is shown to be successful when she is upfront and combative: Getting away from Rasputin as a child by kicking him in the face, ultimately defeating Rasputin by straight up smashing his reliquary.
VLAD
Tumblr media
LION PRIMARY
Vlad is a pretty classic Paragon Lion Primary. He wants to do what is Good and Right and doesn't what is Bad and Wrong. For what reason would he wind up as a con artist as a Paragon Lion, though? Even for Paragon Lions, what is Good and Right to THEM can go against what the collective believes is good and right.
Vlad: "That's what I hate about this government. Everything is in red!"
Yes, the above line is also meant to be a coded message for Dimitri, but Vlad thinks the government has overstepped his moral boundaries and has chosen to step outside the usual bounds to follow his own morals. Part of those morals involve guiding those he believes are lost, thus, his "adoption" of Dimitri, a very lost young man with little direction. He tries to act as Dimitri's "moral compass" until Dimitri finds his own direction again. He does the same for Anya when she comes into their group, trying to lead her towards the possibility of finding her home, while gently guiding her away from focusing on her "past."
Vlad: "There is nothing left for you back there, my dear. Everything is in Paris."
He stands up for what he believes in, and inserts himself constantly when he believes Dimitri is wrong. Letting him know when he's "walking away too soon" or when he "has to talk to her" even if she's a Princess and Dimitri's a Kitchen Boy.
Tumblr media
BADGER SECONDARY
Vlad is one of the kindest, most lovingly genuine characters I've encountered in fiction, and I mean with that with all my heart. He is consistently gentle and understanding with the people he comes across, and is always even-tempered and fair. Compare Vlad and Dimitri's reactions to finding Anya skulking around their home:
Dimitri: (shouting, from across the room) "HEY! What are you doing in here?! HEY! STOP!"
Vlad: (coming in at a light jog, holding up his hand politely) "Excuse me, child!"
Vlad always assumes the best from whomever he's interacting with, and is excellent at getting to the root of what's bothering a person. He actively tries to make everyone in his company comfortable, and will often make soft jokes or observations in an attempt to lighten the mood. His Lion Primary makes him unable to entirely give in when he knows what's going on is wrong, but his Badger Secondary gives him the skills to broach those uncomfortable topics with grace and eloquence.
Vlad: (gives Dimitri the most fatherly, loving hug in all of animation) "Ahhh, my boy... you are making a mistake."
TL;DR
Anya/Anastasia: Badger Lion
Dimitri: Double Snake
Vlad: Lion Badger
And, there we go! Anastasia was one of my absolute FAVORITE movies as a child, so I've really enjoyed getting an opportunity to sort them! Let me know your thoughts! :)

Nature vs Nurture: MBTI, Enneagram, Instinctual Stacking, and SortingHatChats
Hello, again! :)
So, this mainly comes from my own experiences with my typing, and the things I have observed.
But, really, I'd live to start an EXPERIMENT.
To be clear, I am "professionally" typed (by multiple parties/opinions) in all of these except for SortingHatChats, unless you count the test. Lol. So, I'm a pretty good example mold to start this off with.
I have always been a person pulled in two directions by my "head" and my "heart." It's basically a defining factor of who I am, that I struggle between the things I want to do and the things I think I should. I lived in a great deal of turmoil, for a while, but found a bit of comfort in my personality typing.
I felt as though I'd found the source of my problems.
I am an ENFP 6w7 613 so/sx Badger Snake Bird Secondary Model.
If you know anything about all three of those systems, you can immediately see where the problem lies:
ENFP: Higher order focus on creativity/feelings, lower order problem-solving/inner equilibrium.
6w7: Fearful and careful, overly cautious and anxious, with a tendency to deflect or create "fun" to distract from the things that weigh on me.
613: Fearful, perfectionistic, worries what others think of them and puts on a face/performance to keep up appearances. Failure/looking like an idiot is terrifying, not an option, and doesn't look good on me. Practical and unfun.
So/Sx: Focuses on the social realm, on interpersonal relationships, on the hierarchy, and on deep, passionate, one to one connections both with people and ideas. Usually uses my passion and magnetic force to move myself up the social hierarchy. What's missing is Sp (self-preservation,) so I forget to take care of myself physically and tend to be a bit helpless practically. Focus on fun, not on self-maintenance or work.
Badger Snake: The Why behind all my actions is for "the group" as a concept. Focus on people and the social hierarchy. The How is through improvisation, creativity, and general resourcefulness.
Bird Secondary Model: Practical skills that were learned, organization, lots of collections of ideas and tools, originally as a way to overlay and replace my Snake Secondary, but hopefully eventually will work in tandem with it, allowing Snake to take the spotlight.
So, immediately, this paints a picture of a person of two minds. Some of these are highly practical, efficient, unimpassioned typing, while some are not only passionate but actively irresponsible, renowned for being unable to take care of themselves or keep things organized, at least in the physical realm.
But, beyond that, if you know enough about each system, you can begin to see where "You" ends and where "They" begins. Or, in other words, Nature vs Nurture.
MBTI is essentially about how your brain naturally processes things and how it works. There could be nothing more Nature-based than that. On the same level, your Instinctual Stacking (technically from the Enneagram) comes from the same area of simply explaining what you naturally, instinctually want/prioritize. And, your core typing in SortingHatChats comes from someplace deep within, perhaps the same well you Instinctual Stacking does. What you naturally prioritize, what you naturally discount.
Meanwhile, Enneagram refers to fear. It exposes our weaknesses, our flaws, and the wounds that caused them. This is something that can only really develop through experiences, by going through life, by being taught/told certain things. Very Nurture-based. And, SortingHatChats, at least in my opinion, is one of the most flexible/changeable personality typing systems ever. Although your core typing tends not to change, so many other elements within it can, such as performances or models. So, these extra, changeable elements also seem to come from a Nurture place, parts of our personality we pick up throughout life.
So, keeping these ideas in mind, an obvious pattern within myself emerges.
"Nature" Typings: ENFP so/sx Badger Snake
"Nurture" Typings: 6w7 613 Bird Secondary Model
If my theory is correct, "Naturally" I am a creative, people-focused person, with a penchant for using charm/resourcefulness to help myself. My weaknesses, though, are in self-management and forethought. The "Natural" me wants to have fun and not really think about the consequences (other than the social ones.) It's a bit of a mess and is unconcerned with the practical.
But, on the "Nurturing" side, I have learned to be fearful, to be cautious, and to work overtime to self-regulate. All of these elements seek to keep the natural parts of myself in check, and speak to how little I trust myself. These sides were formed because I had experiences that told me my "Natural" self would not make it in this world, that something about my "Natural" self is wrong and needs to be righted.
So, now you're thinking, "uh, that's cool, but what does that have to do with me?"
Good question!
I'd love to see if my theory is correct!
This idea makes sense and tracks for me, sure, but I'd love to see if there is evidence that these associations track for others!
So, please, reblog, comment, or whatever, if you know any combination of these typings and tell me your findings! Do you agree with my assessment about "Nature" typings vs "Nurture" typings? If so, tell me how it manifests for you? Do yours fight each other or work in tandem? If not, tell me why!
Thank ya!

Christien: Very weird to watch!  You are like me-through-the-looking-glass, where all our answers start or end in the same place but go somewhere completely different in the middle.  Really highlights what a slight change in function stack will do.  I kept thinking of Jason Ralph, but I’m not sure if it’s just the hair…??
awkwardisoverrated: Mostly found myself thinking that you were extremely personable.  Also, your favourite things about your job are talking to people and finding number-related drama!  Always great to find more math-loving SFPs.
Anna: You have some ISFJ-ish mannerisms, but you are definitely an ESTP.  A little bit Julia Stiles-ish, perhaps?  You are continuing on the tradition of ESTs knowing exactly which cars they want!
carto_writer: I am pretty sure about ENTJ, but I can’t think of clear enough examples to prove it to myself.  Enjoyed listening to you talk about books, and am curious about your organizing - are you a subject -> author, with all books upright?
Erin: You remind me of someone I know, actually.  Had a wonderful career making glasses for people to wear, if you are looking for ideas for a new job!  Always cool that even when I get two of the same type, you’re very different people (although I’m starting to wonder if ENFPs liking cats more is a universal thing…).

As a Snake Secondary, I know I've called my own Neutral State "asshole me." Lol!
I think it comes from years of being told that behaving the way a Snake Secondary does is "wrong" and from our perception of how nice we can be when we try. The Neutral State doesn't sugarcoat it and it doesn't take into account any outside information before doing anything. It just... does, which is both relieving and terrifying for the average Snake Secondary, which is overly tuned in to the emotional atmosphere of every situation.
So, to other people that aren't used to keeping an eye on the social thermometer, Neutral State probably doesn't seem very "assholish" at all, but just "chill." Lol. But, to a Snake Secondary, even making someone slightly uncomfortable in a social situation can feel like being a real dickhead.
I was looking at some various SHC community posts and saw that a lot of snake secondaries said that their neutral states were assholes lmao.l and seemed uncomfortable with their neutral state. How would a snake with a comfortable neutral state look?
Who’s been saying that Neutral Snake secondaries are assholes? If anything, I think Neutral Snakes have the reputation for being pretty chill. They’re not *pushy* the way (similarly blunt) Lion secondaries can sometimes be.

Another old one, but as an actual Badger Primary, I wanted to elaborate!
To me, groups are machines. You build the machine specifically with the cogs and screws you have at hand, and those cogs and screws are all One of a Kind. Every group has a purpose, whether it's Friend Group or Work Group or Goal Group, they're all pushed towards a purpose, usually by the Badger Primary/Primaries that formed them. BUT, and this is a big, huge BUT, you absolutely do not prune the cogs and screws you have available to form the machine. The loose cogs and screws available inform the machine you will be able to make, at least to me. The pieces that make the machine are as much the machine as the machine itself, so they should be respected as they are. Trying to force a certain type of machine to be made almost always leads to disaster, and more often than not, there's someone you mistook for a screw when they were really a nail or even a spring, either because you misjudged them or they were disguising themselves for whatever reason.
So, when you build this machine, or you become a piece of machinery within an existing machine, this group is very set and extremely delicate. It was built to operate a certain way. So, if one piece leaves, or if anything else disastrous happens, the whole thing collapses and falls apart and everything needs to be redone by scratch. Absolutely. Everything. A totally new machine is formed with the pieces that are now available to you, and this can be an arduous, even emotionally painful task. Regrouping can be a long process, and a small pile of nuts and bolts can sit together, not part of a machine, for a long while until they find something they're able to build again.
So, for me, even the entire world is one big machine, and I am a cog in it that helps it run smoothly. I am utterly loyal to this machine and am consistently eager to learn what my "purpose" is in whatever social situation I'm in. Am I the fun one? The serious one? What skills should I bring to this machine I've found myself in? And, again, bear in mind, this is not always something that has a purely practical goal in mind, a machine's goal can absolutely be to "have fun" (lol,) AND there can be smaller mechanisms within the overall machine. To some, this may feel stifling. To me, it is Home, and, in practice, is the only true way to experience life. Everyone you cross paths with, and many you don't, are unknowingly part of your Machine, and I go out of my way to try and be kind to the people that are part of it, like the Dunkin drive-thru workers that make my Strawberry Dragonfruit Refreshers, or the grocery store cashiers who help me purchase my groceries, the trashmen who help me get rid of my trash every week. I don't necessarily seek them out in a creepy way (lol,) but I respect them and treat them with that respect when I run into them naturally. They are all part of my Life Machine, and that's beautiful to me! :)
So, there ya go! I'd love to hear if other Badger Primaries feel this way! By the way, this also works for existing machines you become part of. I am a loyal cog in the Theater Machine, which I absolutely did not create. Lol! I love theater, it's, at least in my opinion, very conducive to Badger Primary thinking. Every piece needs to work in the Show Machine, and no piece is more important than the other. Everyone's roles are well-defined, and the reward for a job well-done is immediate! Plus, it's literal heaven for my Snake Secondary, and the rapid-fire, sudden incidents are always great fun for it!
Can you explain bonding to individuals vs groups? Groups are made up of individuals so do you just bond to all of them or are you bonded to the abstract idea of your friend group? IDK if that makes sense.
Are you a Snake, nonny? xD
You can bond to each individual in a group, sure, but that's not what Badgers mean by bonding to the group.
It's more like the abstract idea of the group, but I don’t think a Badger would describe it that way. To them, the group--the interconnected community--feels like a tangible thing. Splitting it up, especially permanently, would be painful to them. Like, the bonds the other members share are part of that groupiness. All of you are connected.
...I feel like I intuitively understand this, but now I'm questioning it, because I'm not actually a Badger myself, I just modeled it really strongly for a long time and... uh...
Huh. That thought seems melancholy for some reason.

This is an old ask, but as a Badger Primary-Flavored Snake Secondary I just absolutely did not study. Lol. BUT, my secondary was also Burnt to a crisp during most of my childhood, and I had a very strong Bird Secondary Model foisted upon me by my parents and because I thought it would get teachers to like me more, so I would just lie to everyone and say I studied while still getting mostly A's.
I just didn't wanna reveal my true methods, which were essentially relying on seeing the questions to jog my memory or, for the most part, test meta-gaming. It's pretty easy to deduce which answers are going to be correct when you know what to look for or if you remember what the teacher was putting emphasis on. But, I still loved my Bird Secondary Model, so I did (and do) still carry around a little list full of fun facts and such, which was also helpful.
The difference between the average Bird Secondary and my weaker Bird Secondary Model was that I knew my ability to carry information was limited, and I would use my test meta-gaming to strategize which pieces of information I'll probably have to cram and memorize wholesale, and which I can just sus out. Lol!
Is feeling like you're going to fail or not do the work the right way something that would burn a Badger secondary? Like feeling like you cant just sit and put in the work because that would never work out, like studying for example. Idk how to study properly and that fills me with this feeling of no matter what I will fail and so Im going to avoid studying for as long as possible and then panic cram last minute. Idk if this is even a real thing for most people.
It’s a very real thing. We’ve got some task avoidance (as protection attempt) here, we’ve maybe got some executive functioning struggles. We’ve also got this focus on the “correct” way to study, which makes me think that this isn’t a Burnt Badger so much as it is an unhealthy model. There is no “correct” way to study. There’s only what works and what doesn’t.
(I would LOVE to hear how the other secondaries like to study. I mean, I’m a Badger who can model Bird, I am exactly who the standard studying techniques were invented for.)

I'm a Burnt Badger Primary and Burnt Snake Secondary with both a Bird Secondary Model and a Badger Secondary Model!
Working on unBurning currently, while not totally disregarding my models.
I think it'd be really interesting to know what all the major players in the sorting hat chats fandom are sorted as. Kinda see how that affects sortings and what people are drawn to shc.
I would also love to know this. I’m a Lion primary who models Snake, and a Badger secondary who likes both the Bookkeeper and Courtier skillsets. I have an analytical Bird secondary model I use as a toy, and occasionally as backup. And an Actor Bird model I use to mask because... neurodivergent. But it’s absolutely exhausting to keep up and I hate having to use it. One of the things I’m most proud of is the way I’ve built my life so I don’t actually *have* to, almost at all.
@sortinghatchats @paint-the-ravenclaw @magpie-of-a-birb @missbrunettebarbie @mooglesorts @swearingintengwar @the-phoenix-heart @awinterrain  @misku-nimfa  @persefoneshalott  @air-in-words @dealltheknives  @blueorangedisaster @thecottageinthedark  @ornamental-coral  @connecting-the-mothership @justbecauseyoubelievesomething @nectargrapes @dragonsaredorks @laufire @livrelady @fromthemouthofkings  @hillofwater  @nia-nia-on-the-wall... and everyone else who else sees this! these are the guys who have been writing meta recently / linked me their character sortings and seems enough to start with!
Actually, also @ameliahcrowley ~ you write intelligently mostly in comments, but you’ve been there since the beginning, I see you. And @pearlsthatwerehiseyes, you don’t comment much but everything you *do* say is so complete and excellent. Also your handle is classy.

I thought I'd also mention The Phantom from Phantom of the Opera!
After spending a long time entirely Burnt and on his own, he pours all of his Snake Primary loyalty onto Christine and.... goes a little off the deep end in showing his devotion.
By a little, I mean he murders a couple people. Yikes.
By the end, he finally learns how to be a more balanced Snake Primary. He still loves Christine, but in a healthy way, where he still allows her to make her own choices and live her own life.
Is there any character who is a Burned Snake Primary whose unburning actually makes things worse ? Snake Primaries getting a person is mostly presented as a positive thing but I’m curious about the concept of Snake who the act of gaining someone is actually worse. It makes me think of a character in an AU who latches on someone and this affection is presented as between tragic and disturbing with no happy ending guarantee with how it’s going (thought the author hopes for a happy ending).
Coriolanus, the bleakest and most tragic of Shakespeare’s plays, is about a Burnt Snake primary who unBurns. In terms of this system, Coriolanus is an Exploded Snake whose Lion secondary won’t let him craft himself into the shapes his People require of him. So he Burns, and goes to find his enemies because he literally doesn’t care anymore.
He switches sides, and starts to bond with these new guys (the relationship between Coriolanus and Aufidius is... homoerotic.) But now his Snake loyalty is woken up, and it turns out that now he has People on both sides of the conflict. And he can’t reconcile this. It completely destroys him. If only he had stayed Burned just a little bit longer.

Badger Snakes and The "Red-Stained Ledger"
Since my recent announcement identifying as a Badger Snake (don't @ me if I change my primary at some point lol still going back over that one,) I've looked up some characters that have been identified as Badger Snakes, and found two things:
1) There weren't very many in fiction and
2) most go through the same personal journey I had described in my previous post.
By that, I mean, a very similar feeling of self-loathing or feeling as though you have some dirty secret to hide, AKA the Red-Stained Ledger Natasha Romanoff refers to. The two main ones that have been agreed upon I'll be focusing on are Woody from Toy Story and the aforementioned Black Widow, but I'll also be bringing two new characters into the fray, one that's been sorted as such based on the portrayal, and one that I've discovered on my own. They are Selina Kyle AKA Catwoman and Dewey Finn from School of Rock.
It's interesting to find the similar plotlines that certain sortings are given consistently in media, and The Power Behind the Throne AKA Badger Snake seems to pretty much only have the one: They fight for the group that they are loyal to, but they can't seem to help but do so in a way that they aren't proud of, one that they're sure would lead said group to shun them.
I'm sure someone could point out a character I'm not referencing here that doesn't have that plot, but at the very least, this plot dominates the sorting.
Woody in the first movie goes through exactly that issue. He only wants to fight for Andy's toys, and in many ways, all toys he comes across. He makes choices that he believes will benefit everyone, and prides himself on being able to make the "tough choices." But, he ends up having to do so in a "duplicitous" way, when he seeks to manipulate Buzz Lightyear out of his group. This is a horrible, dirty secret to him, and he feels almost as if he could never return to them, never show his face again because of how he chooses to fight. In the end, he reaffirms that his actions come from a good place, a place of love for his group, and finds ways to use his crafty talents that are slightly more constructive and a little less "cloak and dagger."
Natasha Romanoff has given me the namesake for this Badger Snake element: the Red-Stained Ledger. She describes her desire to fight for her country, for her family, but struggles with what she knows she's good at. She believes she's inherently a bad person and is determined to remain a loner due to her "badness," due to the "monster" she is. Good people don't lie or manipulate. Good people... uh... I dunno, bake cakes or something? Work humble jobs? But, her contribution to the world, her ability to be clever and tricky, means that holding her group, her country, her family, the Avengers themselves, only in her heart and not in her hands. But, her true colors are shown in her never-ending dedication to the cause, down to her being willing to give her life so that no one else has to do it. In a way, it's sad, because she died believing she in some way deserved it. But, none of her teammates felt that way about her. She may have been crafty, a master manipulator, and a skillful liar, but she was the farthest thing from bad.
Now, onto the two newer additions. I've seen Selina Kyle sorted as Double Snake, and I would agree that there are many interpretations that could fit the bill. But, if you ask me, the truest interpretation of her is as The Power Behind the Throne, the Robin Hood with no loud cause to shout from the rooftops; only a desire to help the people of Gotham. She uses her skills as a thief to act as a sort of "guardian angel" to the poorest in Gotham, but she has no grand statement to make. She sees people hurting, her group, the underdogs of Gotham, and came to their aid. But she does so quietly, secretly, because she believes in her heart that the way she has done so is not worthy of praise. She's a con and a thief, but, she places people above all else. She, in some interpretations, is one of the main people to open Bruce's eyes to the fact that not all criminals are necessarily bad people. Some of them are just in terrible situations they can't get out of. And yet, she won't afford that benefit of the doubt to herself, believing she is simply a broken toy not worth fixing. Her occasionally lackadaisical attitude towards killing may seem to make Badger primary unlikely, but Badgers are not always loyal to ALL humans. Her group is the poor and downtrodden, and those who act against them are less than human in her eyes.
Now, we come to my personal favorite, my own personal discovery: Dewey Finn from one of my favorite movies, School of Rock.
Dewey is a fabulous example of a Badger Snake, in my personal opinion. His chosen group is Rock with a Capital R and "the band," whichever band that may currently be. He may have some sort of Burnt Snake primary performance/model going on, wanting to play the part of a "rock star" that truly only cares about himself, but his true loyalty is very clear. He is worried about doing his chosen group justice in every way, making sure that Rock is being well-represented and that he's serving his current band the very best he has to offer. Being kicked out of his band at the very beginning is earth-shattering to him, not because he has a Snake primary style devotion to only them, but because they told him he let them down, and implying that he wasn't representing Rock the way he should. His Snake primary performance/model melts away as he bonds to his new band, the kids he teaches. He brings them into his chosen group of Rock and creates a new bonded group with them in particular as they form a band. He actually finds himself liberated by taking a backseat to the children (a very Badger primary thing to enjoy,) allowing Zack to play his song, guiding Freddie away from making bad choices, helping Tamika find her voice, encouraging fellow Snake secondary Summer how to use her shrewdness, and, using a method I believe is best utilized by Badger Snakes, helping Principal Mullins find her chill. Lol.
Badger Snakes, more than any other Snake secondary type, will rely on the "we aren't so different you and I" approach to get what they want. He finds out Mullins also enjoys Rock. This is something they have in common! Let's create a situation where we "naturally" find out we have this thing in common, placing us both in the same group. Although other primaries don't glorify groups as much as Badger primaries do, all people are more likely to listen to or help out someone they feel is like them in some way. So, Dewey puts some Stevie Nicks on the jukebox and gets Mullins on his side.
In a similar fashion to the characters listed above, Dewey believes he is truly a loser and has nothing of any actual value or goodness to provide. But, the children help him see he's wrong, and he finds a way to utilize his talents in a way that truly fulfills him.
In conclusion, although seemingly unrepresented, I think there actually may be quite a few more Badger Snakes hiding in media, and, perhaps, they can be outed by looking for the Red-Stained Ledger plotline. Badger primaries are more likely, in my opinion, to be disturbed by their actions than say a Lion primary, due to where their loyalties truly lie. Although Lions may fight for the right thing, and that right thing may involve people's rights or serving a group, they serve that right thing before any of the people they may steamroll over to achieve it. Badgers, by definition, serve things. And, usually, lying, cheating, or otherwise being crafty is viewed as the worst possible way to serve someone or something. They do care about the things they may hurt or damage through their actions, and how they use their talents does, in fact, matter to them immensely.
So, to my Badger Snakes out there struggling with their own so-called "Red-Stained Ledgers", just remember that Dewey Finn would think you're kick-ass.
Tumblr media
EDIT: Sorry, was thinking about it, and had to put an edit. Another way to think of this plotline/character archetype is mentioned in School of Rock as well as in a musical I know very well. I wouldn't use this moniker as the name for this plotline, only because it describes a very specific Snake secondary, one that is playful and light-hearted, and not all Snake secondaries are like this.
Zack's song refers to Dewey as The Magic Man, a person that swoops in and, almost by magic (in actuality, manipulation) brings out the best in the people around them. In the aforementioned musical, this character is called The Music Man.
Harold Hill may very well be another Badger Snake, although one more heavily disguised than Dewey Finn. I won't go too deep into his characterization here, but know he's a conman who claims to be a band instructor, while he has no musical talent himself, planning on taking the money for the uniforms and instruments and running. Instead, almost without realizing it, he encourages and manipulates the people of the town he enters into becoming better versions of what they are now. And, the most tragic part of his character is revealed once another character, one of the children he's conned, points out that there isn't a band, and never has been one. Harold tells him "I always think there's a band, kid."
It's interesting that, in both of these cases, they are associated with music and an almost mystical ability to bring out the best in others. I might do a more in-depth look at Harold Hill at some point, since I've been planning on doing some musical characters for a bit.
If thinking about having a Red-Stained Ledger is too negative for your own self-image, think of yourself as The Music Man. Your friends and the people around you may actually see you as an almost mystical force for good, someone who always seems to know the right thing to say or do to bring out the best in them. :)

My Sorting Hat Chats Journey
So, hi! I'm back!
I've been doing fun stuff off in the real world, but I decided to talk a little bit about my own Sorting Hat Chats sorting journey, and how it says a lot about self-acceptance, and how understanding who you really are can sometimes only come from being an active participant in life. Here we goooo...
The Beginning
So, my initial sorting was a Burnt Badger/Bird. This had struck me, because I'd never considered myself a Badger in ANY media. I was seen by my friends as a borderline loner, someone who didn't need anyone else. And yet, all the signs were there.
Looking back on my life, I've always migrated in groups, always looked for a nesting ground, and truly that's all I want. A place to nest, a place to rest, where I can feel safe and surrounded by people who love me. But, after a childhood filled with bullying, I found myself embarrassed of my bold face need for friends, and, for some reason, decided getting too close to people for too long was unwise, so I could probably never have a permanent home. And yet, I always found myself in these little "groups," little packs of people that all travel together.
I've always had these friend groups, where everyone knows each other, we all hang out together, and yet it always manages to eventually fall apart. I asked one of my friends how this keeps happening, and who keeps setting up these groups. She blinked sort of vaguely and said, "uh, you do." It was such a strange realization to look back and see myself as the "shepherd" I was, always creating a flock wherever I went. I had always been the spoke of my friend wheels, the only one that was friends with everyone, or actively tried to be friends with everyone. And I would attempt to hold it together, but it would always ultimately shatter, and I'd leave to find and form another. Family is important to me, and it isn't enough for me to bond with one person. I like for all my friends to be friends with each other, for us all to hang out together and enjoy each other's company.
So, although I still struggle, Burnt Badger came out on top, and I believe is still at the top to this day. I still search for belonging. I still search for family. And, yet, my heart seems to have no intention of unburning. Until recently, I had no idea why.
On the other hand, the secondary I received, Bird, seemed to fit like a glove, and was very obvious to me. I've been called the Encyclopedia before, I was made fun of for being caught reading the dictionary like it was a book, and I always seem to have a "fun fact" for every occasion. And all of this seemed to flow directly into me trying to use these facts and this knowledge to win people over, to get to see me as someone that could be their friend, or that I could be reliable as a member of their "group." So, Burnt Badger/Bird simply made sense. The reasons for me avoiding unburning my primary were irrelevant.
The Now
I'd been gone from this side of Tumblr for a bit, and decided to return on a whim. Saw @wisteria-lodge still posting as much as ever, and saw a lot of my posts had been passed around in the meantime (thank ya by the way) and decided to dive back in, because since then, so much of my life has changed. I've had certain people out of my life for a while that were a hindrance on my self-acceptance, I've moved out of my childhood home, and left a job I've had for the past 5 years. I've been forced to constantly LIVE, to make choices, actual choices, and have been offered the chance to be who I truly am, unapologetically.
So, I took the quiz again, curious if I would come up any different.
I got Burnt Badger/Burnt Snake.
This time, I was almost insulted. A flush of memories, of past feelings came to me, most of all the need to push back, to insist in exasperation I'M NOT A LIAR, as though I was tired of defending myself. As hard as I tried, I somehow couldn't seem to get Bird secondary to reappear.... at all. Which was so crazy, because before, that was pretty much all I could get.
So, I went to the experts, the aforementioned wisteria-lodge and @sortinghatchats .
I looked through the Snake secondary tags and found myself lost in memories I had pushed down, so far down even I couldn't find them, wracked with shame and a need to hide this side of myself, something I'd hidden so well I'd pretty much convinced myself it had never existed.
Being a Bird had always been a choice for me. I decided that was what people must want, becoming intelligent, knowing all of these things, showing off, that would make people like me. But, although I can devour books like nobody's business, and I tend to worry and whinge before every major decision, feeling unprepared, I would always find myself falling short of my own expectations. The amount of times I'd promised myself and others to create a plan and study hard, ultimately fail to do so, and then lie to everyone about it was astounding. My public image continued to be "air-in-words the smart girl" but my private image was still LIAR and FAKE.
I would still somehow get all A's. I was very good at remembering facts and excellent at taking tests. I always thought of them like little tricks themselves, meant to trip you up, but if you paid attention, you could figure out the patterns and be able to bluster your way through stuff you might not even fully understand. You can figure out certain words through context clues, and I was always very comfortable trusting my memory with little preparation beforehand. And yet, I still lied and told everyone I'd studied, at least as a child, before high school.
Math was what eventually messed me up, and sent my self-image whirling into the ground. My grades suddenly went from straight A's to D's and F's. My parents were aghast, what had happened??? I was so intelligent, so smart, such a good student. What had gone wrong?? And, although I never admitted it outloud to them, I knew the answer. With math, you can't trick your way out. You either know how to do it and give the right answer, or you don't. And I had never studied a day in my life, never practiced, never worked hard at all. It was my horrible little secret and math had outed me. It continues to out me, because rather than actually work at it and get better, I managed to keep my grades through high school afloat by leaning on my other grades and taking remedial math courses with a teacher who loved me very much and would let me off easy. To this day, honestly, I can barely count. I might actually have some form of dyscalculia, but I know that if I were willing to try a little harder I could get better. But, why would I do that, when this way works just fine? Just coasting through? But, again, no one could know. Not even myself.
Through high school, I began letting people in on my secret Snake, because being a "slacker" was suddenly cool. I still couldn't let my parents know, or the teachers, but coming clean about not being a keener was what earned me new friend groups. I wasn't some weirdo who actually studied all the time: I was a kid who maybe did 60-70% of my homework and slid by on my good memory and general interest in learning. And my reputation. My reputation was key to my success.
College would be the thing that completely threw me to the ground. There were simply too many sirens singing at me, distractions pulling me away from my work. I'd never looked less like a Bird than in college. I was always skipping class, always not studying, and in fact, would openly fail most of my courses. And I just didn't seem to care. I slid into what I guess must have been a sort of neutral zone, but I wasn't happy. The mask was slipping off and I needed out. I couldn't keep up this charade anymore. It was stifling, trying to be a Bird, going to college for a very Bird degree, surrounded by actual Birds, it was all very much what I didn't want. I wanted something less "academic," less, well, boring. Maybe more Snake like.
And, so, here we are. Currently dropped out of college, living in an apartment with my friend, away from my parents' prying eyes, and with a new job that I chose for myself. On the brink of finally understanding myself, and maybe accepting myself as I am.
My Badger primary is burned because of my Snake secondary. Because I thought I was a sham, a liar, a con, and I didn't feel like I deserved to have people close to me. Those traits are bad, and I was a bad person. No one should be tricked by me.
But, after reading some of the stories from the experts and other Snake secondaries, I found this crazy thought, that perhaps being this way isn't a bad thing. Maybe I'm not a bad person. Maybe it's okay to be who I am. Maybe I can use these "powers" for good, and they aren't inherently evil.
So, at least for now, I'm choosing to identify as Burnt Badger/Burnt Snake with Bird Model. Seeing how it feels to accept myself and not try and force myself to be who I think I should be, or who others want me to be (which is a Snake secondary thing in the first place. Lol!)
For Fun, Here's Some Crazy Actual Snake Secondary Things I've Done That I'm Trying to Be Less Ashamed of Now
When I was little, I used to make up crazy stories about things I'd done to seem more interesting. The one that makes me cringe the most is that my uncle has a statue in his backyard that comes to life and goes on adventures with me. My uncle DID have a statue in his backyard that I really loved but no, it didn't (and still hasn't) come to life.
Some of these, I can't explain, like this one, where I somehow had more than one teacher convinced I'd handed in every piece of homework before the one I was giving them the sob story about that day. I literally had a teacher look me in the face, tell me I'd been handing in my homework really well thus far and knew I was trustworthy, so they'd let me slide with no mark against me. Meanwhile, I had missed the homework for the past THREE WEEKS IN A ROW. I just smiled and let it go. Variations of this situation happened throughout high school and college. And, no, I had no good reason not to do the homework. I just didn't want to do it. Lol.
I usually live in the "neutral state" around my close friends, since I think it's disrespectful not to be straight with them, but I have had to turn it on to help them occasionally. One of my friends was having issues with an ex of hers, she was thinking that maybe she should go back out with the guh, and I had been my blunt, neutral self the whole time, telling her flat out that that was a bad idea. But, it wasn't working. "Neutral state" isn't like a Lion's forceful natural state, I guess. So, I decided I would have to push her in a certain direction to help her get through it. I told her she should go back out with him, and although she did sort of call me out for lying, knowing I didn't actually want that, I told her she should if she really think she should. The dude didn't last one date without showing his ass again, and she thanked me for making her do that. Lol.
Finally, at least for this list, my most prized shameful memory, is when I was taking an acting class in college. We were supposed to create a wordless scene as our final, and I hadn't prepared anything, so I just skipped the day we were supposed to do them. But, I decided to show up for the last day to see if I could still somehow pass. She's going through the grades, and looks up and asks me, "I don't have anything written down for you, I can't remember, did you give a performance or not?" I knew I hadn't then, but decided to give one now. I told her yes I had done one, don't you remember came up with a name on the fly. The same friend from the last story was staring at me like she was about to burst. She thought for a moment, then exclaimed, "ah, of course! Yes, I think I remember. I remember you'd done pretty well. What grade did I give you?" I hedged my bets and said A-. Lol. I had never been filled with more pride shame in my life.

The Phantom of the Opera: Sorting Hat Chats System
I have returned! This time, I'm talking about one of my longest running obsessions: The Phantom of the Opera musical. Keep in mind, this will only be in reference to the way the characters are presented in the musical, so the housing may be different in different media.
Also, if you have any questions about the system, I'd direct you to my last post about Scooby-Doo, or to @sortinghatchats (the originators of the system) and @wisteria-lodge (my personal favorite fan sorter.)
First off, as discussed elsewhere, stories themselves can have houses as well! Since this musical is my absolute favorite and I have dissected it on more than one occasion, I feel I can speak on the houses this story comments on. At it's core, Phantom is a story that sets the Gryffindor Primary way of life against the Slytherin way, and forces the heroine to acknowledge what kind of person she is. Is she a fighter or a lover?
In this story, Gryffindor Primary says that your ideals are most important. What is right and what is good should win out in the end. Those who are wrong should be punished and evil and good truly exist in this world. There are angels and there are demons, and only the angels have earned their right to love.
Meanwhile, the Slytherin Primary says love is the final word. It argues that you love who you love, and all is fair in love and war. And that doesn't just mean romantic love. Creative love, familial love, friendly love, love of one's career.... all of these are beyond "good" and "evil," "right" and "wrong." Love is not created by seeing the goodness of a person, and can exist despite the existence of evil there, and that is okay.
The moral of this story, in my opinion, falls in the Slytherin camp. And that is because two of three main characters are Slytherin Primaries, and it is through their love, of art, of creation, and of each other (romantically or not) that the main conflict is resolved.
I'll only be sorting the three main characters, as they're really all I need to illustrate this point. Here we go!
The Phantom: Slytherclaw (Exploded Slytherin Primary, Ravenclaw Secondary)
The Phantom is an ultimate example of the "Jack of All Trades" Ravenclaw Secondary. He is a scholar, musician, composer, singer, architect, inventor... the list goes on. He is a collector of tools, and these tools he uses to compensate for his deformity. He has made himself overly competent to feel better and as though he might deserve a place at humanity's table. He uses careful planning and control over an environment he claims is his to give the impression of being a ghost. That brings us to his Exploded Slytherin Primary, or rather, his initially Petrified Slytherin Primary. Being a ghost is the dream of any Petrified Slytherin. To become a literal non-entity, unable to be hurt, unable to love, unable to care for anyone other than themselves. He was very unfortunate to be born with a Slytherin Primary housing, as the rejection of those he loved lead him to his petrifying. He wanted no one in his circle but himself and sought to other himself purposefully, removing himself from society. Until, he met Christine. Her love of music and creation, a love he had used to replace his need for chosen people, helped him to connect, and he slowly began to un-petrify. This could have been a healthy thing for him, a way for him to return to life, but no. He was so certain he'd never need anyone else, never want anyone else, never find anyone else that he clung desperately to her, became obsessed, and we watch his explosion throughout the musical. In one fell swoop, he went from entirely petrified to an explosion of pent-up love and devotion aimed only at her, all his love for the chosen people before him aimed only at her. And, with his newly ignited love, he tries to convince Christine to be only with him, care only for him, which as an Exploded Slytherin Primary, feels like the only way to properly love someone, the only right way to live, and murder and extortion are perfectly respectable ways to attempt to hang onto that love. So, he asks her to give in to the "music of the night." Her love of music, creation, and her devotion to him as her Angel of Music. But, there is another man in her life, telling her there's a higher calling, a higher judge of character than love.
Raoul de Chagny: True Gryffindor (Gryffindor Primary, Gryffindor Secondary)
I know Raoul has a reputation of being a soft-hearted guy, but this guy is most definitely a Gryffindor Secondary. After not seeing Christine for years, he has no problem coming into her dressing room uninvited and inviting her to dinner, and expects no pushback from her. He is quick to judgement, confronting the managers about sending him a note that he has little proof they sent. He makes himself as a barrier against evil, as he swears with confidence that he will protect Christine from a man who has already killed once. He is filled with fiery passion for doing what is right above all else and will barrel over any evil-doer who stands in his way, an old school Knight in Shining Armor. But, his Gryffindor Primary ultimately leads him into conflict with the woman he loves. After having seen this monster attack innocent people, he is sure that Christine would want to run away with him and condemn the Phantom for all time, but he is utterly confused by her reaction. Not only is she not running away, she's actively refusing to help capture him and pushing against him! Why?? Raoul's extreme Gryffindor-ness leads him down into the lair to save her when she is taken, to be immediately rendered useless by both the punjab lasso and the plot. His righteous nature is not wrong, and in many other stories, he would be the hero of the day. But, this is a Slytherin story, and so love is the only solution.
Christine Daaé: Slytherpuff (Slytherin Primary, Hufflepuff Secondary)
We spend a lot of the musical inside Christine's head, more than we spend watching her physically act in reality, but we can still figure out her secondary. Her Hufflepuff Secondary comes out in her devotion to her craft. She is a hard worker and takes her art very seriously. But, Christine can also be a doormat, allowing people like Carlotta to walk all over her for far too long out of fear of rocking the boat. She is regarded as a quiet and kind woman who works diligently at her craft, so Puff Secondary felt right. Now, for her most defining trait in the musical, her (almost unhealthy) Slytherin Primary. Christine has never quite petrified, but she has come very close. Her father was, and, for a while into the musical, still is, her entire world. He was her only companion in life for a very long time, and all of her creative energy came from her love for him. Then, she met Raoul as a child. The young and charming True Gryffindor was easily able to slip past her shyness with his Gryff Secondary panache, and she had found another chosen person to bring into her life. Even after they were separated, she never forgot him and continued to love and appreciate him. Then, her father died. She nearly petrified, wanted to push most people away, especially with Raoul nowhere to be found, but the Angel of Music her father promised her came to her. The Angel replaced her father in her circle of chosen people and became the most important person in her life. She would sing for him out of devotion and love, just like her father was a muse to her. But, Raoul's sudden return into her life creates the conflict. Things have changed, Raoul. She has someone she feels a loyalty to that she cannot break. Even as her Angel is proven to be a deformed man, even after he has murdered, even then, she cannot bring herself to despise him and shun him. When you're in with a Slytherin, you're in hard. It is only when the Phantom tries to take advantage of her grief at her father's grave, only after she fully confronts that her father is never coming back, that she can bring herself to fully side against him with Raoul. The Phantom should know how much her father means to her. He should understand. A Slytherin using another Slytherin's person against them is the ultimate betrayal. The next betrayal came when he threatened to take away Raoul, her last chosen person beyond the Phatom himself, trying to force her to become like him and live in the darkness alone. Instead, it is through Christine's Slytherin-like act of love towards Phantom, even beyond his horrible acts, that ends his tirade.
Tumblr media
Let me know what you think of my analysis! [And, if anyone in the Phandom sees this: yes, I love Raoul. No, I don't like LND. I'm technically a fan of both E/C and R/C, but I believe R/C is ultimately canon and better aligns with the moral of the original story. Meghan Picerno is my current favorite Christine (love me an operatice Christine,) Jordan Donica is the best Raoul to ever grace the stage and deserves a spin at the Phantom, and Earl Carpenter has my favorite acting interpretation of the Phantom even if his singing was only okay.]

Reblogging this since it includes the proper credit for who came up with the Exploded Houses expansion. Thanks, @swearingintengwar !
And I'm so happy getting reblogged by you, wisteria! Thanks so much!
My Sorting Hat Chats System Debutante (Scooby-Doo Housing)
I found a new favorite toy.
The @sortinghatchats personality system is so incredible. It does exactly the thing that frustrated so many that MBTI couldn’t do: actually describe your personality. MBTI is wonderful for understanding a person’s thought process and mind, but, as anyone who really knows MBTI knows, it can only tell you so much about how a person will actually behave in life. And while still plenty useful, most people go into personality typing to try and discover the different ways we actually behave in life, not just the way our minds thrum along.
I highly recommend looking up how the system works if you don’t know, but essentially everyone gets a PRIMARY and a SECONDARY house. The primary house speaks to the WHY we do things and the secondary speaks to the HOW, referring to problem solving. This system is also unique as it accounts for the elasticity of the human mind by introducing things like MODELS, PERFORMANCES, BURNT HOUSES, and even the recently suggested EXPLODED HOUSES (I first heard of this through @wisteria-lodge . If they didn’t think of it first, please let me know who did!) I’m not going to take the time to explain those in full here, though I may reference some of them below, and would direct you to both of the aforementioned blogs to learn more.
So, I’m doing my first housing venture using the system, and I’ve become recently re-obsessed with Scooby-Doo, so I thought they’d be perfect to practice/demonstrate. I’d love any criticisms or suggestions! Thanks!
Scooby-Doo Housing!
Tumblr media
Fred Jones: Gryffinpuff (Gryffindor Primary, Hufflepuff Secondary)
Fred is a great example of a Hufflepuff Secondary. He is a hardworker and, most importantly, is heavily invested in the gang. He’s always at their side and expects them to be at his. He balks at the idea of taking shortcuts on mysteries and would rather work all night than besmirch the good name of Mystery Inc with shoddy work. But, the gang is his life more than any other member, because as a Puff Secondary, he sees them as extensions of his own hands and ability to hell others. He has a great balance between the “acts of kindness” Puff Secondary and the “hardwork and toil” Puff Secondary. In fact, his Hufflepuff Secondary is so strong, I almost thought he was a True Hufflepuff. But, a great indicator of difference between Gryffindor Primaries and another primary whose motives they align with is whether they would allow other people to live the way they want. Fred is a big time believer in justice, fairness, and helping other people, but he would not be comfortable knowing someone else disagrees and no one could argue him out of those beliefs. An actual Hufflepuff Primary may quietly disagree, but Puff Primaries, by nature, believe in allowing other people to live how they want, and they would never cause a ruckus over a hypothetical. Unless you’re actively hurting someone emotionally or physically, a Puff will leave you alone. But, not Fred. Fred has that Gryffindor Primary fire that he needs to share with the world and he cannot be wavered.
Daphne Blake: Ravenpuff (Ravenclaw Primary, Hufflepuff Secondary)
Daphne and Fred get along best through their secondaries, though Daphne is a better example of the “acts of kindness” Puff Secondary. She is always looking for an opportunity to help someone or make someone happier or more comfortable, like carrying around Scooby Snacks for the boys, and she is almost as invested in the gang as Fred. But, compared to Fred, Daphne gives off a less passionate and fiery vibe; in fact, she is far more even-keeled and level-headed than any other member of the gang, in my opinion. She is difficult to ruffle and has a natural curiosity, leading to her Danger-Prone Daphne moniker. There’s a reason one of Daphne’s original limited poses was her with her hand under her chin like the Thinker; she is a thinker and highly logical, making decisions based on evidence and rarely through initial emotional responses. This would make her a Ravenclaw Primary, the voice of reason and calm amongst the gang. I would say her current adopted reality system comes primarily from Fred (whether you ship Fraphne or not. Lol.) As he’s the “leader” of Mystery Inc, she has taken on his love of fairness and justice, but with a healthy dash of friendly Claw skepticism.
Velma Dinkley: Gryffinclaw (Gryffindor Primary, Ravenclaw Secondary)
This one may cause some contention. Lol. No one would argue that Velma is a Ravenclaw Secondary. She’s definitely a collector and user of tools, her primary tool being research and knowledge. She is a planner and always does her research before taking on a mystery and has saved the gang’s skin more than once by coming prepared. So, as for the Gryffindor Primary, I used the same method I used to pick out Fred. Is Velma passionate or dispassionate? Well, compare her to Daphne, an actual Ravenclaw. Daphne is slow to blame or create an opinion, feeling she needs all the information first before she makes a judgement. Meanwhile, Velma is usually one of the first to begin naming names and claimjng she has the answer, whether or not she does. She is also far more active compared to Daphne, looking closer to Fred’s level of passion to solve the mystery quickly rather than Daphne’s desire to sit back and take her time. So, Gryffindor is the only one that felt right. She is out here to catch bad guys and kick ass, just like Fred, compared to Daphne who is here to observe and discover the truth.
Shaggy Rogers: Hufflerin (Hufflepuff Primary w/ Slytherin Primary Model, Slytherin Secondary)
Okay. Here we go. Believe it or not, Shaggy Rogers has the most complex housing out of all of Mystery Inc. I know, I didn’t expect it either. First off, his Slytherin Secondary is fairly obvious. He is a shortcut finder, a skillful liar, and a lover of mischief. He’s always looking for the next opportunity to get what he wants, and fares best against the villains when thinking on his feet and improvising. But, his primary was less obvious. I went into this assuming he would be a True Slytherin, with the gang and, primarily Scooby, as his chosen people, where he truly doesn’t care about anyone else. But, as we’ve learned through extended characterization throughout the years, Shaggy grew up very lonely, without many friends, until he met Scooby. When Scooby entered his life, he wasn’t lonely anymore, but meeting the gang was even better. Now, he had MORE friends! Meanwhile, in most media, Scooby is portrayed as taking longer to warm up to new people than Scooby. He doesn’t particularly like sharing and doesn’t seem to feel a need to make many friends. But, not Shaggy. Shaggy really does enjoy meeting new people and building a wider friend group. But, that alone does not a Hufflepuff Primary make. Some Slytherins enjoy larger groups of chosen people, some don’t. Instead, I thought of the multiple circumstances where Shaggy has had to fight against his desire to help everyone and his need to keep Scooby happy. Scooby is certainly his favorite friend, and for Scooby’s sake he lives in a Slytherin Model fairly often, acting as though Scooby is really all that matters to him. But, without fail, Shaggy ends up having to get on Scooby’s level and explain that he has this need to help and not run away that he can’t ignore. Shaggy’s love for people and inner need to reach out and help speaks to the Hufflepuff Primary under the Slytherin Model he’s created to make Scooby feel more secure.
Scooby-Doo: True Slytherin (Slytherin Primary, Slytherin Secondary)
Scooby’s representing the green and silver from top to bottom! His Slytherin Secondary is equally as obvious as Shaggy’s. They’re both the kings of avoidance and dodging confrontation. Although he may be afraid, put him in a situation armed with nothing but his ability to improvise, and he’ll come out on top. But, he is truly a Slytherin Primary, compared to Shaggy’s model. Shaggy is truly the center of his world. The rest of the gang is certainly part of his inner circle, but the moon hangs on Shaggy for Scooby. If he’s doing something, it’s in some way for Shaggy or related to Shaggy. He goes back into the fray not out of an overarching desire to help people, like Shaggy, but because it’s that person. He helps Shaggy because he’s Shaggy. He helps Fred because he’s Fred. And so on and so forth.
So, those are my thoughts! I’m not totally happy with my ability to explain my thought process, yet, but I wanted to get something out there with simple, recognizable characters. Let me know your thoughts!

My Sorting Hat Chats System Debutante (Scooby-Doo Housing)
I found a new favorite toy.
The @sortinghatchats personality system is so incredible. It does exactly the thing that frustrated so many that MBTI couldn't do: actually describe your personality. MBTI is wonderful for understanding a person's thought process and mind, but, as anyone who really knows MBTI knows, it can only tell you so much about how a person will actually behave in life. And while still plenty useful, most people go into personality typing to try and discover the different ways we actually behave in life, not just the way our minds thrum along.
I highly recommend looking up how the system works if you don't know, but essentially everyone gets a PRIMARY and a SECONDARY house. If they didn't think of it first, please let me know who did!) I'm not going to take the time to explain those in full here, though I may reference some of them below, and would direct you to both of the aforementioned blogs to learn more.
So, I'm doing my first housing venture using the system, and I've become recently re-obsessed with Scooby-Doo, so I thought they'd be perfect to practice/demonstrate. I'd love any criticisms or suggestions! Thanks!

Tumblr media
Fred Jones: Gryffinpuff (Gryffindor Primary, Hufflepuff Secondary)
Fred is a great example of a Hufflepuff Secondary. He is a hardworker and, most importantly, is heavily invested in the gang. He's always at their side and expects them to be at his. He balks at the idea of taking shortcuts on mysteries and would rather work all night than besmirch the good name of Mystery Inc with shoddy work. But, the gang is his life more than any other member, because as a Puff Secondary, he sees them as extensions of his own hands and ability to hell others. He has a great balance between the "acts of kindness" Puff Secondary and the "hardwork and toil" Puff Secondary. Unless you're actively hurting someone emotionally or physically, a Puff will leave you alone. But, not Fred. Fred has that Gryffindor Primary fire that he needs to share with the world and he cannot be wavered.
Daphne Blake: Ravenpuff (Ravenclaw Primary, Hufflepuff Secondary)
Daphne and Fred get along best through their secondaries, though Daphne is a better example of the "acts of kindness" Puff Secondary. There's a reason one of Daphne's original limited poses was her with her hand under her chin like the Thinker; she is a thinker and highly logical, making decisions based on evidence and rarely through initial emotional responses. This would make her a Ravenclaw Primary, the voice of reason and calm amongst the gang. I would say her current adopted reality system comes primarily from Fred (whether you ship Fraphne or not. Lol.) As he's the "leader" of Mystery Inc, she has taken on his love of fairness and justice, but with a healthy dash of friendly Claw skepticism.
Velma Dinkley: Gryffinclaw (Gryffindor Primary, Ravenclaw Secondary)
This one may cause some contention. Lol. No one would argue that Velma is a Ravenclaw Secondary. She's definitely a collector and user of tools, her primary tool being research and knowledge. She is a planner and always does her research before taking on a mystery and has saved the gang's skin more than once by coming prepared. She is also far more active compared to Daphne, looking closer to Fred's level of passion to solve the mystery quickly rather than Daphne's desire to sit back and take her time.
I know, I didn't expect it either. First off, his Slytherin Secondary is fairly obvious. The Return (I Will Type You)
Ayyo.
So. Coronavirus is a thing. Yikes.
And, thanks to a recent chat with another former-typeblr user (if you’d like a shout out, lemme know!) my interest in posting publicly about MBTI has been reignited. I left for so long because the discourse in the tag had gotten very strong, and my life suddenly went flying in a very different direction. I went from having a lot of time to very little. Now, that time is back, as well as my love for all things MBTI.
SO. I’d love to do some typings! (Bet you never thought you’d hear another blog say that, huh?) If you need help with typing, wanna talk theory, or are just on quarantine and just plain bored, contact me!
Feel free to contact me with whatever issues or questions you may have regarding your typing and I will help you to the best of my ability! If you’re curious about my “credentials” (lol) feel free to look back through my blog posts and see if you like what ya see!
And, for those of you still wondering about part two of my princess series... It’s gonna be a long quarantine, so who knows!

ENFPs Vs Fe Dominants
Hello. This is a post I desperately needed to make. I've written on this in bits and pieces, but every time I come across this in the MBTI tag it just bothers me so badly.
So, a lot of the time, I read through the "stereotypical" descriptions of MBTI, to see what's floating around and mostly for fun. But, more often than not, I find myself, not just slightly, but COMPLETELY unable to relate to whatever they wrote for the ENFP. It's usually some form of the "OOH SHINY" or "SQUIRREL!" chestnut, or it's something about that one friend who cries at Folgers Coffee commercials. Now, I totally get it: It's stereotypical. Not supposed to be an exact science. But, I usually find myself relating much more strongly to the ENTP description, which usually involves some sort of wisecrack or social awkwardness resulting from the inability to know when to shut up.
Of course, this causes my Ne to go into overdrive. Maybe I AM ENTP, I mean, I'm described as analytical by everyone I know, I spend my free time analyzing a personality system for fun, I create new axes and systems with which to type myself and others with on a Saturday night for shits and giggles. So, sure, the possibility is there, especially when you have dominant Ne to help you find it.
But, I think, more importantly, something has gone wrong in the way we characterize Fi vs Fe specifically in ENFPs and ESFPs.
Something I've noticed, on the other hand, is that we seem pretty good at characterizing Fi in both INFPs and ISFPs. They are often described as moody, changeable, passionate, unique, unique, UNIQUE. They care a lot about whatever it is they care about. They are determined and stubborn.
Meanwhile, ENFPs are Human Labradors who love EVERYONE and ESFPs are one note party hounds. Something has been lost in translation, here.
Nothing about Ne would inherently modify Fi into harmony seeking lovers of all people and nothing about Se would inherently modify Fi into party seeking partiers of all parties.
ENFPs and ESFPs retain that same passion and stubbornness. They are not harmony seekers. They are not Fe users. (Hence the title.)
The amount of mistyped Fe dominants on this site and on other MBTI related sites is pretty astounding. Most of them are typing as ENFPs due to this unfortunate Human Labrador metaphor, which is much more fitting of an ESFJ or ENFJ in general. They seek to entertain and be seen as entertaining. ENFPs, meanwhile, are actually not THAT terribly different from ENTPs. Having the same dominant and inferior function should create a ton of similarities in thinking, and that should show in the descriptions.
Both ENFPs and ENTPs appear generally unconcerned with others, for example. For ENTP, this comes from having their Feeling function low in their stack, for ENFP, this comes from having auxiliary Fi, which means that their Feeling function is not only buried under possible looping conditions but also usually revolves around the concerns of the self, rather than those around them. Being dominant Ne means both are much more excited by ideas than by people. But, you'll likely find ENFPs looking at ideas involving humanity (though usually in the abstract, like through typing) than ENTPs, who usually prefer the non-interpersonal.
As I identify with ENFP, I am routinely described as someone who studies people rather than talking to them. Most of my conversations are about my latest "theories" and begin with "I think I figured out why I/you/we do blankity blankity blank." I like to search for the reasons behind my own and humanity as a whole's behavior, and it comes through in pretty much everything I do. I do very little just because I want to, I've thought it through thoroughly and decided this was the best direction. I have been described as interesting, funny, and a bit eccentric, but puppy-dog warmth? Never.
So, please cool it with the Human Labrador shit, kay? You're confusing a group that REALLY doesn't need anymore confusing. Thanks, dudes.
