The positive effects of adding omega 3s to your diet are astounding, from reducing inflammation to majorly increasing vascular and heart health, and so so much more. I literally feel the difference when I’m ingesting my omega 3s regularly! They’re really a hidden health key not enough people discuss.
So how do you get them on a plant based diet? Easy! Flax seeds (ideally ground) are your best and cheapest bet. Although many will say the ALA in them doesn’t compare to the EPA and DHA found in fish oil, biochemically, ALA is converted to EPA and DHA within the body, and the scientific literature on the subject shows the same benefits are seen with flax ingestion and taking fish oil.
That being said, there is still a direct EPA and DHA source for us who want to avoid animals in our supplements — algal omega 3 pills! I usually take one if I’ve forgotten to eat my flax for a few days.
These are by no means the only sources of omega 3s in a plant based diet, they’re just the gold standard for getting your daily adequate intake, in my humble opinion.
More plant based options for those who don’t want to splurge on the supplements, or have a personal vendetta against flax include:
and tofu as well!
Happy eating! Go get your daily adequate intake in! ☀️

Some great sources linked throughout their excellent summation. The most important being the UN’s FAO report on “Tackling Climate Change Through Livestock,” where the bolded and jaw dropping fact above originates from.

There’s enough food + space for all of us on the planet!
The flawed and inequitable allocation of these resources is abhorrent, and the western obsession with meat isn’t helping — it’s undeniable.
