I know Mr. Rogers was invited to the Night of the Living Dead premiere, but didn't know he also saw Dawn of the Dead.
Either way this is a wholesome as fuck story and I love it so much.

Hi, hello, it’s me again with another post about my podcast.
We started a Book Club series and the first book we’re talking about is World War Z by Max Brooks. 🧟‍♀️🧠
Given that I have zero clue if this fandom is still alive or not (insert zombie joke here), I imagine this post will reach a very specific group of people of the internet, that like me, have only recently picked up the book or those that it still haunts to this day.
To that very specific group: 👋 *waves excitedly
We decided to divide the episodes according to the bigger parts of the book - Warnings, The Great Panic etc. - instead of discussing just one chapter per episode.
I will leave the link to our episode here, please give it a listen. 🤞🏻

Recently Viewed: Hell of the Living Dead
Tumblr media
Well, I suppose I have nobody to blame but myself. I knew what I was getting into when I decided to watch Hell of the Living Dead. After all, director Bruno Mattei (the man of a thousand aliases; this particular production, for example, credits him as “Vincent Dawn”) wasn’t exactly known as a purveyor of prestige cinema. Nor, for that matter, was his screenwriter, Claudio Fragasso (responsible for such “gems” as Troll 2). Naturally, I went in expecting a typical Italian zombie flick: sleazy, gory, and unapologetically schlocky.
I was not, however, remotely prepared to be bombarded with images of actual human corpses. In an apparent effort to minimize the budget, the film incorporates elements of the mondo genre—a sensationalistic style of “documentary” (and I use that term charitably) that explores “exotic” foreign cultures, with an emphasis on shocking violence and sexual taboos. Thus, "repurposed" stock footage depicting authentic tribal funeral ceremonies, political unrest in third world countries, and the ritualistic slaughter of animals is awkwardly spliced into the action, giving the impression that our protagonists have inadvertently wandered into a National Geographic television special.
Tumblr media
This grotesque exploitation masquerading as “social commentary” (despite seemingly sympathizing with victims of colonialism and imperialism, Mattei nevertheless portrays them as primitive savages) might have been somewhat forgivable if the rest of the movie was otherwise entertaining; unfortunately, it’s just a miserable slog. I’m not averse to cynicism and moral ambiguity on principle, but in this specific case, the irredeemably despicable characters and utterly nihilistic themes are simply off-putting and unappealing. Even the soundtrack, allegedly composed by the usually dependable prog rock group Goblin—in reality, the score was cannibalized from various sources (much like the visuals), which explains why the music resembles the final gasp of a dying synthesizer—is flaccid, inert, and uninspired. Hell of the Living Dead is a thoroughly unenjoyable experience, and I regret watching it; what an insufferable waste of time!

my dot point review of "Rec" (2007) that nobody asked for, spoilers included and I'm on mobile so no read-more, beware:
Pablo was the MVP, all of that AND he had to carry around the damn camera, rip Pablo
glad I could watch this on dvd and pause it to my liking - would have been an absolutely relentless experience otherwise, which is probably what was intended, but frankly would have exhausted me personally
camera work was great, in that it was great handheld/shaky cam/found footage work - feeling of panic as the camerawork became less and less stable with the deterioration of the situation was great, loved the shot of Mrs Izquierdo "dead" over Angela's shoulder, kind of wish they'd have her move or something just subtly though, I kept waiting for it
ending felt oddly disjointed - from the new "posession" thread to the tapes to the appearance of what I assume was patient zero? The explanation that it is in fact a virus that was holding the thread of the plot and and which the tapes tell us Is correct suddenly being stirred in with the religious iconography and possession idea? seems confusing to pull up in the last 10 or 15 minutes, if anyone else has opinions I'd like to hear them
so many people putting their necks at face height with proof these people bite, not a production critique, it just gets me when people do shit like that in-world, will give them a bare pass for being in quite a hysterical situation and this being 2007
interesting film though! not sorry I watched it (unlike the first 15 minutes of 'Day of the Dead: Bloodline' - do yourself a favour and don't bother with that one)
Angela really tried to be there for the people, making sure to try and get everything for posterity, although from a 2022 perspective that absolutely sticks in my head as a "shock content to get more clicks" tactic, but I do think thats a more current and less charitable reading than was intended
3 stars out of 5, decent film, only one really good jumpscare in my opinion, camera work in storytelling was great tho
