"I guess we're a bit too similar--we're good at putting up a front," Rio sighs. It's as exactly as Zhen says, and it sucks how right he is about it all. Here she thought she was doing a good job at her performance before she ran into someone who almost completely saw through her.

What stings the most was that her attempt was just that: an attempt. An unsuccessful try to reconnect to someone she forgot. She almost convinced herself that she was back to someone she used to recognize in the mirror.

It wasn't fair.

Nor was it fair for Zhen to be caught up in Rio's negative vibe. She knew next to nothing about him, but given what she's seen so far, it's clear that he didn't deserve to be caught in the crossfire like that. Had she known prior about his uncanny ability to peer through someone's facade, she might've approached it differently.

She saw the way he brought a conversation to a brighter mood. Taking something that was headed towards disaster and reviving it into something a little more uplifting. Fitting, given the phoenix motif. It's only fair she does the same.

"I will say, sometimes when you don a persona like a piece of armor, it feels like you're putting on a performance in a more literal sense. Like a costume," Rio smiled at the comparison, thinking back to a fonder memory of her doing just that.

This boy not just studied the blade, he learned the blade FROM HIS CRUSH. And not only that but he actually has tons of symbolism around BOTH of the swords he wields over the course of the novel. His childhood sword gets broken when he's about to be thrown into his corruption arc, but the pieces are carefully preserved by his crush, and later he rebuilds the sword in question. Once he is fully freed from corrupting influence of his other sword, he uses this one again! It represents his inner goodness that gets broken, but is never really gone. The other is a cursed sword representing toxic masculinity that corrupts his mind and pushes him to harm himself and others. It gets destroyed in the end thru the power of gay love!

His sword is first broken symbolizing his trauma and loss of innocence when he is kicked into hell. Then his other sword, Xin Mo, which he finds in hell, represents toxic masculinity and he breaks it at the climax of the novel. It can also dimension travel and is evil.

Binghe has two different songs in this book and a complicated relationship with both of them. First there is Zhen Yang which breaks at a dramatic moment and is mourned over by his teacher/love interest "like a grieving widow". And then there's Xin Mo! His "golden finger". The most ridiculously overpowered sword in the world, it can even cut rifts in the fabric of the world. It also runs on sex and violence and drives him to madness which can only be cured by the aforementioned love interest sacrificing himself... or by sex!

hello wawa!! i'm chinese diaspora just to preface, and i've been having some Things going on in terms of gender. i've recently decided i want to try experimenting with using a different name, and i want it to be zhen, but i'm having trouble picking the character, i really don't know enough about the language. do you have any good ones?

Hmm there’s quite a few you could choose from… and it might depend on if you decide to go with just Zhen as a monosyllabic name or if you decide to combine it with another character.

But here are some character suggestions to start with:

贞 (zhēn; loyal; faithful)

真 (zhēn; real; true)

禛 (zhēn; blessed; auspicious)

珍 (zhēn; treasure; precious)

甄 (zhēn; distinguish; evaluate)

蓁 (zhēn; hazel(nut); abundant)

桢 (zhēn; evergreen shrub)

震 (zhèn; quake; shake)

镇 (zhèn; subdue; suppress; guard; small town)

朕 (zhèn; imperial "we"; subtle)

I think also that if you type zhen into any online dictionary, it'll give you all the other options I didn't list.

If you want to search up names with one of these (or another) character, just google “带__字的名字” and you’ll get a lot of baby name websites for both girl and boy names. All the names that will come up will be two syllables, so you can see which ones might sound nice.

Obviously Chinese names are generally unisex, but the different characters still give certain combinations more masculine or feminine vibes. I feel like you can use either list, though.

I think we as a society are really sleeping on Mu Qing canonically showing up in his believers' dreams, not to extend a helping hand or be inspirational or anything, but explicitly to tell them that he is, in fact, a snack, and is severely displeased by how they've deyassifisd him in his temple. Take a good look and try again.

Like... how many of these incidents must have occurred for different sculptors for people to believe that yes, Xuan Zhen Jun does actually visit people's dreams with the sole purpose of flexing his pretty face, silky hair & killer fashion sense? And what did the 3 tumors think about this whole thing?

Anyways what matters is that like how there are people that say that Virgin Mary has appeared to them in a dream and she has, IDK, smiled at them or told them to take heart and spread kindness or whatever, in tgcf canonically there are people who can claim that "General Xuan Zhen once appeared to me in a dream... to show me how pretty he is."

Hearing the words "tasty food", the children instantly perk up, swarming around me. I snuck a glance at Osborn. He was sighing at the taste of freedom.

Ah Qiang guided our little group to the kitchen.

The children all chattered happily the entire way there. However, my ears picked up on a small argument amidst the chattering.

Ah Zhen: Ah Qiang, do you really know how to make desserts?

Xiaodie: I bet he doesn't! All he knows is how to waste food!

Ah Zhen's suggestion was immediately supported by the other children as voices of affirmation resounded through the crowd. They then formed two distinct groups.

Suddenly, someone tugged me to the side, and I was brought to join the girls. Ah Zhen raised her chin as she stood next to me, shooting the boys a proud look of determination. The boys instantly started panicking.

Ah Qiang: W-We still have big brother Osborn on our side!

Confusion was written all over Osborn’s face as he was pulled into the boys’ group. And I faced a similar predicament, just that it was girls on my side, as we both walked to opposite ends of the kitchen.

Facing the flour, whisking machine, and butter laid out on the counter, I thought long and hard. But, I could only remember how to make cupcakes, no matter how hard I tried. Hence, I rolled up my sleeves and got to work.

Melt the butter, then add the sugar and flour. The whisking machine whirred as it whisked the mix. Soon, a golden-yellow batter was produced.

I poured the batter into small paper cupcake cups and was just about to put them all into the oven when Ah Zhen walked up to me.

Ah Zhen: And who are you going to give these cakes to, big sister?

MC: To everyone, of course. Because you’re all precious friends of mine.

Ah Zhen: Huh? But Big Brother might get sad if you don’t make him a special gift.

I’d originally intended for him to eat the cupcakes with the rest, but now that she puts it like that… I froze, feeling slightly awkward about it.

MC: He probably wouldn’t… “Sad” doesn’t really exist in his dictionary, haha.

However, she held up her hands and wiggled her fingers.

Ah Zhen: Trust me, big sister! I’m a powerful witch who can read the minds of others!

She then winks before leaving, causing my thoughts to drift to Osborn, who was working in the other kitchen.

MC: He’s neither good with children nor at cooking. He must have it hard…

Yeah, maybe I should make a little something for him. He is a “big kid” after all.

Since I only had a limited time to work with, I decided to go with Madeleines.

However, I had only made them once in my life. I quickly searched up the recipe on my phone and quickly melted the butter and put in the baking powder…

My actions unwittingly sped up when I thought about the look that’d cross his face upon receiving the Madeleine.

Once it was ready, I quickly placed the batter-filled molds into the oven as well.

A wave of relief washed over me as soon as the oven started up.

MC: There! It’s so hot in the kitchen. Maybe I should go out for some air.

The long corridor was empty, save for the children’s laughter that came through the door.

Shocked, I shoot him a baleful glare, only to find him looking a little panicked.

I was mid-snicker when Osborn approached me threateningly.

Osborn: Quickly! That demon’s waiting for me. A Tiramisu is hard to make, okay!?

MC: I genuinely recommend that you make something simpler instead.

Osborn: You think I didn’t tell him that? Of course, I did! But no, the kid insisted on a tiramisu because it had some sort of special meaning behind it.

MC: Well…

I suddenly remembered the allusions behind a Tiramisu.

MC: Ohhhh! Is he giving it to someone he likes? Wow, never saw that one coming.

Osborn: The kid called “Ah Qiang” wants to make one. He doesn’t know how, so he’s been pestering me about it.

Osborn: I searched up several tutorials on my phone, but there were some things I couldn’t understand, so explain them to me, please?

He held up his phone before me, but I turned away.

MC: But we're opposing teams now. Wouldn’t I be betraying the girls if I were to teach you how to?

Osborn: Oh? So you're not gonna teach me？

MC: No-pe.

I grinned triumphantly. Oh, dear Osborn, you finally got your just desserts!

He probably hadn’t expected me to reject him so brutally, for he rubbed his forehead, seemingly at his wit’s end.

Then, he freezes. His eyes narrowed dangerously as he put both hands against the wall, caging me within the small space.

Osborn: If you don’t teach me, then don’t even think about going back. Lemme guess, your little treat must have already been put into the oven, right?

Osborn: Who knows what will become of them if a certain someone isn’t there to retrieve them in time?

MC: ...Osborn?

Osborn: Hm?

MC: Are you dumb? All ovens come with a timer.

Osborn suddenly stiffens as the realization hits. His eyes flit around awkwardly.

But something soon clicked in his head, and the smile returned to his face once more.

Osborn: Well, don’t you still need to adjust the temperature?

You freeze at that. Didn’t the recipe say something about turning down the heat somewhere through mid-bake?

Now it was my turn to be shell-shocked.

Looking at the muscular arms caging me in on both sides, I realized that I had absolutely no chance at escape. Hence, I shot him a flattering smile.

MC: Fine, fine. You win, boss man. Leave my cake unscathed!

Osborn: And why’s that?

MC: Because… the happiness of many kids are at stake! Do you really have the heart to rip their smiles away?

Osborn: Absolutely.

I stared him down for a long while, refusing to back down, but I eventually backed down in defeat.

I took his phone and quickly warned him in hushed tones.

BANG! Suddenly, the door slams open.

I panicked for a moment, wanting to hide myself out of guilt. However, there was nowhere to run and nowhere to hide in this empty room.

Ah Zhen was standing just outside the door when she spotted us both. She suddenly pointed at us with a shaky finger and a shout.

Ah Zhen: You two! What are you two whispering about!?

MC: N-Nothing! Hear me out-

Ah Zhen: La la la, I can’t hear you!

She covered her ears, shouting as she ran out of the door. We could hear her loud and clear despite the distance she’d put between us.

Ah Zhen: Big sister got seduced by big brother! She has betrayed us!

My face flushed red, but Osborn only quietly smirked beside me. I swiftly smacked him on the chest in anger.

MC: This is on you!

Osborn: So you were seduced by me? My, I couldn’t tell.

MC: As if!

Osborn: Who knew that kids had such sharp eyes?

Pushing him away, I swiftly made my way out.

The girls all turned to face me with looks of betrayal the moment I got back to our kitchen. It took me a long time before I finally got them to believe me, albeit reluctantly.

The cupcakes turned out perfectly white and plump, giving off an enticingly sweet aroma. On the other hand, all the Madeleines that I'd baked had turned into unidentifiable charred lumps.

MC: I really shouldn't have baked them together… I don't think these have any chance of being saved.

I was in the middle staring and lamenting at the product of my wrong choices when a curious head popped up beside me. It was Ah Zhen, who'd followed the delicious smell all the way here.

Ah Zhen: These cupcakes smell so good! What's this though? Chocolate cake?

She reached out and was just about to touch it when I quickly pulled her away.

MC: Uh, those are burnt cakes. They taste terrible, so don't touch them, okay?

Ah Zhen: Oh…

Ah Zhen nodded and left obediently. With the time limit close at hand, I quickly placed the cupcakes into a basket, ignoring the Madeleines that had been burnt into charcoal.

Soon, everyone gathered at the Orphanage’s small lawn with their own baskets of food in tow. 

It was now the peak of the morning when the sun shone the most comfortably. The gentle breeze carried the refreshing scent of the grass and trees alike. We laid picnic mats on the green and lush lawn

The girls were the first to show their creations— An array of colorful and cute cakes, bread, cookies, and sweets.

I took out my cupcakes to add to their brilliant array of sweet creations. Everyone quickly rushed forward and swiped all of the goodies clean once they heard that they all had a share made for them. 

The girls felt confident enough that surely, they’d won this round. They then urged the boys to show their creations too.

Ah Zhen: What did you make, Ah Qiang?

Xiaodie: Which one’s big brother’s? I wanna see it!

Unfazed and unaffected by everyone’s watchful gaze, Ah Qiang and Osborn both produced a beautiful pink-colored box.

Ah Qiang opened his. Inside, was an actual tiramisu. Although it wasn’t very pretty, we could all tell that he’d put in lots of effort. 

They succeeded in making it! I turned to look at Osborn in surprise and just so happened to meet his eyes. He shot me a sly wink.

Xiaodie: Whoa! Cake! It looks really good… Can I eat some!?

Ah Qiang: No, you can’t! This one’s for Ah Zhen.

Ah Qiang bashfully lowered his head in apology, his voice growing smaller along with it.

Ah Zhen smoothly caught the verbal ball while the others gave an envious gasp.

Ah Zhen: Thank you. The witch shall grant your wish.

As Ah Zhen tucked the box safely under her own cloak, the other kids turned their attention to yet another one of the many boxes.

Xiaoqiu: And who are you going to give your cake to, big brother?

Osborn immediately shifted his seating posture into a rather awkward one as he placed a box before me.

Osborn: Try it. I can't vouch for the taste though.

MC: It's for me? Thanks.

I opened the box to see a piece of tiramisu within…

However, Ah Qiang’s tiramisu was decorated with one blueberry, while Osborn's was garnished with a layer of yellow-coloured lemon-flavored fudge.

Xiaodie: Huh? Why's it… the same type of cake?

Xiaoqiu: And what do you know? Ah Qiang likes Ah Zhen, and big brother likes big sister! Of course, their cake's the same!

Osborn’s eyes fall upon me. There was nowhere to hide; my panic was bared in front of him in all its entirety.

Osborn: This thing’s way too complicated to make. After I finished helping Ah Qiang make his, I didn’t have time to try making anything else, so I just went with the same thing.

MC: Oh…

I felt too embarrassed to face him for a while, fixating my eyes on the tiny piece of tiramisu.

Despite it being cut all crooked, and its top layer not being completely coated in cocoa powder, the thought of Osborn putting in the effort to decorate it despite being as clumsy as he is makes my heartbeat race.

Reluctant to speak, I placed it on the ground and snapped several pictures, but it still felt like something was lacking.

MC: Osborn, can you hold it and let me take a picture?

Osborn: More pictures? Snap too many and I might just eat it.

I quickly snatched the cake back and took a small hesitant bite.

Osborn: How’s it?

MC: Hmm… Yummy.

Osborn: What’s with that sigh of relief? Are you really that untrusting of my skills?

MC: Ahaha, of course not~ It actually looks pretty good for your first time!

Osborn: I knew it wouldn't be so bad.

Osborn: Everything turns out fine as long as I’m serious about it.

He smiled and extended his hand towards me with a proud look on his face.

Osborn: Alright, where’s mine then? I’ve been waiting really long now.

MC: Yours?

Osborn: Yeah. Where's my return gift?

I then recalled the plate of charred Madeleines and averted my eyes in guilt.

MC: Everyone has their own cupcake. Didn’t you already eat yours?

Osborn: I don't get a special one?

Osborn moved closer, his eyes bright with anticipation. Faced with such a look, I found it hard to voice the “no” that was lying on the tip of my tongue…

Ah Zhen: There’s something! Big sis (y/n) prepared something for you, big brother!

Ah Zhen’s voice cuts through my thoughts as she magically procures a box from under her cloak under everyone’s curious gazes.

Ah Zhen: Here it is! I knew that you’d be unhappy if you didn’t receive any gift, big brother!

Ah Zhen: So this clever little witch has brought it out for you!

Osborn: I see now. Thank you, clever little witchling.

A bad feeling niggles at me, starting to make itself known. However, before I could react, Osborn had already snatched up the box!

The box was nicely wrapped up in a gold-colored cloth with a floral pattern. He weighed the box with a thoughtful look before facing me with a smile.

Osborn: Now what goodie did you make, and why don't you wanna let me have some?

MC: You won't want to eat it. Trust me!

I quickly reached out to grab at it. There was only one thought in my mind- I can’t let Osborn open it!

He simply got up in the face of my advances and walked a couple of steps away. He undid the cloth covering it and opened the lid of the box.

I quickly chased after him and tried to grab the box again, but he only stretched his arm out before turning around and lifting the box higher in the air. The smile he had on his face oozed with smugness.

Osborn: Now that you’re trying this hard to reclaim this, you’re only making me even more curious.

I circled around him, frantically jumping in an attempt to nab it from him.

But no matter how hard I tried, all he did was dance out of my reach. I was out of breath after a while of hopping about.

Taking advantage of how I was out of breath, Osborn rounded back to the picnic mat and seated himself. Then, he placed the box on his lap, and…

MC: Wait, no! Don’t open it!

Before I could finish, he’s already pried open the box.

My black Madeleines, charred beyond all recognition despite the effort I took to bake it, was out in the open for everyone to see.

Osborn's hand stilled. He looked slightly shocked at the sight.

I was ready to slam the lid back down on the box when Osborn swiped a piece of it right under my nose.

Osborn: Still gonna try it.

MC: Wait, no- Hey!

Seeing that he was about to put the black, charred, failure of a thing into his mouth, I quickly reached out to stop him.

But all he did was shimmy a little to the back to completely slip out of my reach.

He narrowed his eyes in mischief as he leaned backward.

Osborn: You've put so much effort into it, it's only fitting that I try some.

Saying so, he put it into his mouth.

It was for a fleeting moment, but I didn't miss the slight furrow of his brow.

MC: How does it taste…?

Osborn: Hm, definitely something I'll never forget in my entire lifetime...

MC: ……

Osborn: But having room for improvement isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Osborn: I’m very patient when it comes to deserts tailored especially for me.

Osborn: I’m looking forward to your next one.

The cheery laughter of the children seems to recede, leaving only his low voice in the background along with the sweet aroma wafting out of the box of treats.

He gently pats my head and gives me a smile overflowing with warmth. I nodded in slight embarrassment.

Osborn: It's a deal then.

Okay, so we finally got some updates on KFP4, the plot, the director and what to expect to see in the film. My reaction to this is….mix.

On one hand, I���m so happy we got something! But on the other hand, I’m just really nervous and I don’t like this deflated feeling. So I’m writing this out to share my thoughts and wanting to hear what the fandom thinks. I’ll try not to make this too long or sound like a rant, I’m going straight to the point and talk about the good and bad about KFP4.

So first let’s talk about the director: Mike Mitchell

……Oh boy.

Ok I’m not gonna give the guy any crap, I’m willing enough to give him a chance. Yes I know he directed Trolls, but he also directed Shrek Forever After. I looked back at that movie after The Last Wish and it’s not really that bad. It was actually sweet and serious in some parts. And that’s what I hope this director will do, have the 4th film at least serious in some parts and don’t make it too goofy or jokey where it feels awkward.    

Now on to the story and this is the best way I can summarize this from a few articles I’ve read:

“ Po is getting promoted to be the spiritual leader of the Valley of Peace, but he has to choose someone to take his place as the new Dragon Warrior. He catches a theft fox who he could see potential in their skills but they don’t get along. But Then a Chinese sorcerer known as ‘The Chameleon’, has summon Po’s past villains from the dead. Now Po and his (student?) must journey together and stop this new villain. ”  

So judging by the information that we got, it sounds like many years have passed since the third movie. Po becoming leader actually worries me because it’s probably hinting that Master Shifu may pass away and now Po has to take his responsibilities (This is just a guess so sorry Shifu fans!).  

There is also this fox character they have mention in the articles which they can’t seem to get the name right and they keep flipping their gender. First it was misspelled as Shen, then it was Chen and Zhen so I’m just gonna call them Fox for now on.

I wonder what kind of story arc will they give Fox. What’s their backstory? What kind of lessons they must learn? Does Po see himself in them or are they both different with different views? These are some questions I hope they answer. Giving Po a student to teach was a direction I theorized DreamWorks will go down and I’m glad they did. The trilogy had Po as a student, now taking the role of masterful teacher, it make sense to passed down those experiences to someone. I can really image the funny shenanigans they can get in to, along with the Furious Five. I think it would have been awesome if they each had a student too and they all come together fighting the villains with the skills they were taught. If there’s one thing I’m really worried about is the Five getting pushed aside for this new character or Fox ending up being a perfect character. Have Fox be flawed, have them be a kid we can relate and root for and something that the kids will like too.

Now let’s talk about my most favorite thing of all: THE VILLAINS!!!

OH MY GOD MY FANGIRL IS TRYING TO TAKE OVER! TAI LUNG, SHEN AND KAI ARE COMING BACK!! AND I DON’T KNOW IF THIS IS A GOOD OR BAD THING!!??

I am shock, like I never expected they go down this route. Story wise, I understand why the three shouldn’t come back as they served their purpose as villains, but no, they are bringing them all back. A actual animation studio is listening and giving the fans what they wanted??

DreamWorks must be watching their fandoms, that’s the only explanation I can think of. They must have saw all of our fanarts and fanfics and went like “Oh damn, they really love are villains…you know what, let’s bring them back.”

So how will this affect the story? I honestly don’t know, maybe Fox has to learn all body, mind, and spirit in order to help Po and the Five.

Now what I’m really surprised is they choose a chameleon to be the forth villain. I did some research this morning, and there’s not that many species that look intimidating. But if they could make a peacock threatening, I’m sure they can make a chameleon threatening too. I even looked up about sorcerers in China and I think they meant shamans. Chinese shamans are known to be wizards or spirit mediums, this could mean the Chameleon may have some connection to the spirit realm, which I hope they explored more on. I read some of this under Wikipedia, its very interesting.

And that’s all I have to say for Kung Fu Panda 4. I am a little worry for this film but I’m not gonna get worked up about it, I’m gonna stay positive that it will work and I’m sure it will. The only thing that could save this film is the animation. I think KFP is perfect for that hybrid spiderverse animation.

kung fu panda 4 review - spoiler free

it was solid, not as good as the first three movies, but the og triology set the bar so high even a 'not as good' movie is still a fun watch. The animation is beautiful and you get quite a bunch of awesome action scenes out of it

zhen is a lot more likable when not voiced by awkwafina (croatian dub saved me ✊️) but even that wont save her from her character being pretty bland. ironically the same criticism for her design could be applied for her character as well, not bad, likable enough, just fails to stand out and ive seen it done better a lot of times already

chameleon... oh boy... so much potential, such incredible built up, such luckluster execution... ill talk more abt her in spoiler section, but honestly she was the weakest link of the movie

dont get your hopes up for furious five, they only really exist as a cameo, what you will get is mr ping and li being a very married couple and personally if theres anything worth seeing the movie for its them (still im hoping for at least a short abt the furious five, cmon theyve been non existent since kfp 3)

the pacing was too fast, and there were too many comedic and too little serious moments, glad im not the only one that noticed

ive seen a lot of complaints about tai lung and other past villains not being in the movie enough, but honestly im happy for that bc its not their movie, they all had their own movies to shine and i really feared this movie would rely too much on them to carry the hype and im glad that wasnt the case. PLEASE stop asking film studios to spoonfeed you familiar content

the chameleon rant

you know, i believe the kfp movies are heavily carried by their villains. they're the ones that set the tone, bring the stakes, and not only are they a foe for po to defeat but represent his internal conflict (tai lung being self acceptance, shen being overcoming grief and kai being self discovery) so to have the villain be the movie's weakest spot is... not great at all

firsty, the chameleon is the first movie villain in the franchise to not have any beef with any of the main characters (like tai lung had with shifu, lord shen with po and kai with oogway) and that couldve been great, give us a villain that doesnt care about po or anyone else and is just doing their own thing, its something new and an unexplored territory, but then they do nothing with it.

what does she want? to rule the valley of peace? all of china? ok and then what? the city shes already rulling doesnt look like its doing too bad to me. why should i care about her being defeated? yeah shes mean, but where are the STAKES

and how does she reflect po's conflict? because its about accepting change and she's a chameleon? weak, that only connect on paper and only barely. is it how she was never accepted to train kung fu because of her size? that's such a lame motive. really? not a single kung fu place wanted to take you in for your size? in a franchise full of all the different characters of all different shapes and sizes being kung fu masters? yeah ok sure

what i did like about her is how they made her get her way through manipulation and intimidation. she's not strong, she's not a skilled fighter, she's not inherently scary, but she uses smoke and mirrors to intimidate people around her and manipulative tactics to get her henchmen to listen which ties nicely into her shapeshifting abilities, just wish theyve done more with it, show us how she spreads horror stories about herself, show us the influence she has over the townspeople, show us just how manipulative she is of zhen, hell have her be all kind and nice to her in moments to bait her to stay under her wing (yk as abusive parents do)

nothing much more i have to say so spoiler part was rly just abt the chameleon but i needed to rant abt her more in depth bc i had high hopes for her

He awoke to a gentle nudge, small hands careful not to jostle his clothes further. Zhen rubbed at his dreary eyes to see Arashi peering up at him. “What's up, kid?” His voice was thick with sleep, the man repeating blinking through the haze of slumber. How long was he sleeping? He ran a hand through his tousled hair, a slight frown at the strands tumbling from his eyes. With a small glance toward the window, he could see light spilling through the slight cracks. 

It was daytime. He looked around to see Tora nowhere in sight. “Where’s your sister?”

“Outside. Playing.” His voice was quiet, his smile small. Arashi snuggled inside a big and fuzzy blanket beside him, comfy.

Course the little scamp was out the moment the sun rose over the horizon. He knew Nakhti had to be watching over her. But he remembered her words. “I would keep her tied up inside my pouch if I could. Both of them. But that would damage her and him. I must let them go and allow them to spread their wings and learn on their own.”

He understood then, knowing she was right. But always either one would be observing their actions, making sure neither got into trouble. 

Arashi was the quieter one of the pair. Right now he watched Zhen with a steady gaze. A better listener than most. 

“Will you be ok?” 

Zhen made sure to keep his face clear as he spoke. He bore a casual smile, hand ruffling the small wind’s spirit hair, “Course. What made you think otherwise?” Arashi seemed to like it, his head leaning into the touch, feeling comforted. 

“They were asking you things. A-And… you were mad.” Arashi puffed out his cheeks. “Tora was-” He stopped himself, looking away as he sank deeper into the blanket. He knew better than to tell a lie. He didn't want to disappoint the one Pokemon who meant so much in his life. A tinge of red formed on his cheeks. “I don’t like them,” he muttered. “They made you mad.”

Zhen had to blink at his words. Rarely Arashi was outspoken but he heard the firmness in his voice, the glint in his eyes. 

Scratching the back of his head, Zhen let loose a weak laugh. “You already made up your mind, huh?” 

“I…” Arashi struggled with the word, a tint of red to his cheeks. “Bound-tree. They crossed, right?” 

Again he was astonished by his learning. Zhen appeared sheepish. “Yeah… they did. Where did you learn that?” 

“Nakhti told me to set a bound-tree with Tora. Tora gets… too much sometimes.” He could tell Arashi was reluctant to say too much, as if it was a secret he wanted to keep to himself. But he could trust in Zhen, even now as he kept his eyes carefully averted. He always loved his sister but he didn't share the same energy she seemed to have. “It helped. She gets it and we play better now.” 

Zhen smiled. “I’m glad that helped you guys better.” A sigh. “They crossed some boundaries with me but I’ll be okay, tyke. It’s called being polite.”

“Paw-paw-” 

“Polite,” Zhen completed for him. “Polite is for pretending. I'm sure Nahkti told you all about it.” A show of brilliant teeth, a smile. “Being nice to strangers.”

“Why be nice when they were mean towards you?” Arashi grumbled. “Tora always bites those being mean to us. Maybe you should bite them too.” 

Zhen got a laugh out of that. Tora was all tooth and claw, even in play. “Maybe I should give them a good old bite too,” he teased, leaning with the snap of teeth. The sound incited a squeal from the spirit, the joys of laughter breaking through. He could forget about the evening like this. “You needn’t worry your little brain about it. It's a grown-up thing and you're still a kid. I can handle it.”

Arashi ducked his head. “Nahkti says I'm a big boy now. She shows me lots of things like” -he wiggled free of the blanket to clamper close to the kotatsu- “this!” He pointed out the small shrine. “Tora helped but I did most of the work!” 

The excitement of Arashi was that of a bird flapping its wings. He hovered carefully around his creation. Fingers covered with red blotches of paint, Arashi was careful not to touch the small shrine, fearful he might break it. But his eyes sparkled as he looked upon Zhen with expectation. He was holding his breath, hoping it was perfect, hoping Zhen would give him praise for his good work.

It was the look that undone the Ho-oh, Zhen placing his palm on the small spirit’s head. “You have done well, Arashi.”

We Best Love: Episode 1 [BLIND REACTION]

So, I have a girl friend who is fan of this show and finally convinced me to watch it. Did I make a mistake? Who knows.

But I collected my thoughts and decided to do this. Well, this is gonna be long so get ready. I'll edit with my afterthoughts (note, EAW means Edited After Watching [the episode]) once I'm finished with season 1, or maybe before. We'll see.

Ok, let's begin!

You sure this is a romance? This looks more like an intervention.

So, Zhau Shu Yi. I'll guess he's the main character or one of the main characters. I'll try to remember his name [furiously takes notes]

The one gremlin with No Name is asking Zhau why they think it's important for him to win. As a Bakugou fan, I'm excited to hear his answer.

"I push myself forward, so that you can see me." Just one minute and it's already too ‎fluffy for my heart

So, they're fighting underwater. They saw too much anime, istg. Anygays, that tells me these are actual kids (well, the actors may be older, but I'll suppose they're interpreting kids. I bet they're highschoolers).

"LESSON 1: LET'S SUFFOCATE." Okay, wow, great title. So maybe my joke about him being dead wasn't that far off.

Chilhood friends to lovers is such a nice trope, oml, go for it, boy. Be a man and go get your man!

Fang Zhen Wen and Jiang Yu Xin. Hope I remember that. Are those the other two friends?

Gao Shi De is me receiving gifts (socks and a mug) on Christmas

Anygays, Gao Shi De and Zhou Shu Yi seem to have this kind of rivalry since they were basically on diapers. They came out of the womb wanting to throw hands with each other.

But Gao Shi De seems to be the naturally gifted, always on top, and so Zhou Shu Yi developed some sort of inferiority complex, or so it looks like. (Wow, this reminds me of yet ANOTHER story and ️‍🌈 ship that started in a similar way -if you know, you know-)

"Why did you fall-" THAT'S WHAT I'M SAYING, LIKE, WHY

Are you telling me that the actual reason he fell was because of the big gay panic- I mean, rivalry, that he has against Shi De?

OMG HE CUT HIS FINGER! I've seen enough shojo (and shonen) to know what this means. Where's Shi De to kiss it better?

Shu Yi heard about the proposal and went all fake-smile on them and then left.

"Is Shu Yi OK?" Idk, girl, you tell me, I thought you three were friends.

They're telling him is dangerous to run down the stairs. I think he'll live, but I won't forgive him for dropping his backpack on the floor. Bro, get your stuff.

He's gonna start singing Beat on It.

Annnnnd he went back to the pool. Man, this is were it all started. The flashbacks from episode 1- oh wait.

He's actually making me feel bad, ngl. Maybe it's the acting, or that I understand the whole "why not me" situation. Mitski taught me well.

It's hard. Friendships and relationships are messy, specially when someone is still young. You also have to deal with a lot of feelings being even more irrational than they should, and the inferiority complex definitely doesn't help, making you feel so insecure about yourself, and as if no matter what you're always going to lack something.

I might barely know them but at the end of the day it's no one's fault, really. You can't control how you feel, or how others feel.

MOOOOOVING ON. You know who could help? HEY, SHI DE!

AND THAT'S THE END OF EPISODE 1. I kinda wanna know if he'll give him the lame excuse about cpr.

I'm dying for more tension, Yu Xin knows what I'm talking about, she also has to finish her thesis.

So, that went quicker than I thought. It was compelling tho. I still need more to form solid opinions, but I´ll bite, I'm interested to know how this develops.

Domyouji, Daoming Si and Gu Jun Pyo were spoiled brats with a domineering mother and a cool sister. It's his sister that raised him and gave him a good beating when she thought he needed one. So let meet them.

Number 1: 1992 Hana Yori Dango Anime. Since the 1995 did not complete the full story meaning Domyouji's family was not a part of the abbreviated movie version I am including the anime where Domyouji's sister whacked him in the kisser.

Number 2: 2001 METEORGARDEN. Daoming Si's mother made her appearance around Episode 14 appearing for her son's birthday and meeting Dong Shancai whom she hated immediately. His sister arrived around Episode 9 to give him some love and a beating.

But she was keeping the business running for Domyouji Tsukuba to take over. She was mean. His sister stepped in to protect Makino from her brother.

Number 4: South Korea's Boys Over Flowers had a mother that was ruthless but she seemed to care more about her son even though she still sat out to control him and his choices. Number 5: 2018 Meteor Garden China's Remake had one mean mama. She was willing to let her son suffer a hunger strike because she would not allow him to marry Dong Shancai. She had him kidnapped and even cut him off financially (briefly) but I do believe she truly loved her son. They gave her vulnerability as she almost lost the business and needed Daoming Si to marry to get out of it. His sister arrived to whoop his ass when she saw him manhandling Dong Shancai

Old Queer Love Letters

So, I just reread Red, White, and Royal Blue this week and was reminded of my slight obsession with historical gay love letters. I think there is something so heart-wrenchingly beautiful and devastating about these letters written between these people who so deeply love each other, even in times when they would be persecuted for that love. This is a collection of excerpts from some of my favorites, with sources included. Many of the letters written by men are from Rictor Norton’s “Dear Boy” essays, a collection of essays on love letters between men throughout history, which I highly recommend perusing if you also like to read old gay love letters (links below). All emphasis is my own. 

1779- Alexander Hamilton to John Laurens

“Cold in my professions, warm in my friendships, I wish, my Dear Laurens, it might be in my power, by actions rather than words, to convince you that I love you. I shall only tell you that ‘till I bade us Adieu, I hardly knew the value you had taught my heart to set upon you. Indeed, my friend, it was not well done. You know the opinion I entertain of mankind, and how much it is my desire to preserve myself free from particular attachments, and to keep my happiness independent on the caprice of others. You should not have taken advantage of my sensibility to steal into my affections without my consent. But as you have done it and as we are generally indulgent to those we love, I shall not scruple to pardon the fraud you have committed, on condition that for my sake, if not for your own, you will always continue to merit the partiality, which you have so artfully instilled into me.”

Oh! how I wanted to put my arms around you in reality instead of in spirit. I went & kissed your photograph instead & the tears were in my eyes. Please keep most of your heart in Washington as long as I’m here for most of mine is with you!”

1941- Gordon Bowsher to Gilbert Bradley

“For years I had it drummed into me that no love could last for life…

I want you darling seriously to delve into your own mind, and to look for once in to the future.

RANDOM THOUGHTS: We Best Love: Fighting Mr. 2nd ep. 3 (rewatch)

(These are my random thoughts from my rewatch on the 30th of March 2024)

Since my rewatches may contain spoilers, I’m putting my random thoughts after the “Read More” link.

After the previous episode with the tension, emotions running high, and the reveal that Shi De had made a deal with Shu Yi’s dad, it’s time for the truth to come out.

And the truth is out.

I know Shu Yi’s dad is an ass for what he’s done, and that he clearly has some attachment issues with his son (the overbearing parent and all), but he’s also hilarious. He always cracks me up with that scene when he’s leaving Shu Yi’s house.

That scene where Shu Yi is completely honest with Shi De about his perspective of the whole situation (the deal between his dad and Shi De) is painful. Imagine being as loyal as Shu Yi and as in love as he was with Shi De, only to feel that your boyfriend never believed in your loyalty and your willingness to fight for your love. And to know Shu Yi even threatened to leave his dad when he didn’t accept Shu Yi being in love with a boy (after confessing this to his dad after he graduated)… That’s heartbreaking.

Considering Shi De’s reaction to Shu Yi’s words, he knows he screwed up big time.

I’m sorry, I know the whole situation between Shu Yi’s dad and Shi De is fucked up. But I can’t help but laugh at these two idiots. They’re too fucking funny.

Shu Yi’s dad going from ”I don’t accept you dating my son” to ” What was wrong with my son” (as in meaning ” How dare you think my son wasn’t good enough”) in the span of the same conversation is just too funny. No wonder Shu Yi is so moody. He’s gotten it from his dad.

I love that Shi De took that conversation with Shu Yi’s dad as fuel to not give up (rather than the other way around). He realized his mistake now and is ready to take responsibility for it. And I’m so proud of him for that. The devotion from Shi De from now on will be on a new level.

The way Shi De just lifts Shu Yi and takes him to the bedroom…

And now it’s time for Zhen Xuan to misinterpret Pei Shou Yi’s relationship with Shi De just like Shu Yi did in the first season (even though Pei Shou Yi isn’t doing anything on purpose this time).

The way Pei Shou Yi just hurled Zhen Xuan over his shoulder… And Zhen Xuan hanging there like a rag doll…

I loved this episode because the truth came out (what really happened that made Shi De stay away for so long), Shu Yi’s honesty about his perspective of that truth, Shi De realizing his mistake and using that as fuel to be better, and Shi De taking care of Shu Yi. Now I can’t wait for Shu Yi and Shi De to get back together again.

Bella: Do you really have to do that intro every time, Yol?

Yol: Indeed I do, Bonnie.

Bella: ...it's Bella.

Bella: My apologies. These two are just..like that.

Wally: Oh I don't mind it at all, really. Where did you say he was from though?

Bella: An empire on the far side of space. Apparently his mother sent him here-

Bella: t...

*Sally walks past them, looking at Yol curiously. She activates psychic powers, and he quickly whips around to respond.

Sally (in thoughts): Haven't talked to anyone in a while, have you? You seemed...lonely.

Yol (also thinking): Ah, w-was it that obvious? No, not like...not like this.

Julie: what are they doing?

Frank: I think they're communicating telepathically.

Julie: Huh, I didn't know she could do that.

*both stop in shock as crying sounds are heard offscreen, and we cut to see Yol grinning widely, joyful tears in his eyes.

For a bit of context, Zhen are social psychics who communicate via antennas like he has, constantly connected to a radio network of others nearby. Going too long without someone to talk to can cause serious mental or even physical damage. Boy, good thing he's found some new friends !

I just watched the movie, so it's fresh in my mind, and these biased opinion of mine will be on the assumption that the reader has already seen it.

Some things I didn't like

||The first thing that hit me was that the pacing was really off. The movie felt really fast paced. There wasn't really much of any time to actually "breathe" during the first act of the story (first act being up until Zhen betrays Po). If it's not comedy, then it's action, and if neither, then it's exposition. A good amount of Zhen's backstory was explained through exposition. Though the truth of her backstory (bring the Chameleon's disciple) was explained better than when they explained her growing up an orphan. The Chameleon's backstory is a straight up joke. We get exposition (standard villain nonologue) during her fight with Po that she grew up with less status, wanted to learn kung-fu, but was denied because she was short, which is bull. Mantis, Master Chicken, and Shifu come to mind. Not to mention that Zhen and Po have known each other for only two or three days, which isn't nearly enough time needed to start caring for somebody with Zhen's character. She would have caved so much longer ago, should that have been the case. Tai Lung was actually very cool, here. Not really written well, but I appreciated him as a character. It seemed like he got some sort of spiritual enlightenment, or at least he calmed down, in the Spirit Realm. One other thing about the Sprit Realm is that it's directly related to Oogway, who doesn't appear at all in the movie and it mentioned two or three times, plus one "a wise old turtle (tortoise) told me...". I was actually hoping so much to see more or Tigress and Po's relationship. I thought, maybe some interaction at the start or end of the movie, hopefully both. Imagine my reaction when "The 5 might not be here, but that doesn't they're here as life-sized cardboard cutouts!!". Ahahahaha...... She appears at the very end, in her clothes from the 3rd movie, smiling (me being delusional says that she was happy to be back home w Po (I'm delusional)), but all she does it look cool and teach Zhen for 5ish seconds at the start of credits, as well as the other of the 5 doing so. She says nothing, she has no interaction with Tai Lung, nothinggg...... To add, Tai Lung added nothing to the movie at all. He was mostly there to be hot (understandable, but that can only go so much for an anthropomorphic big cat) for his (dying) fangirls (of which I am not). His entire thing is "comedic bits", "you're not worthy of being the dragon warror, Po", and then "I saw you defeat the Chameleon; you're worthy" and then everyone boys down to Po; Kai and the Peacock were up front and centre next to Tai Lung bowing too, which sort of contradicts their entire character, but maybe they gained some spiritual wisdom in the Spirit Realm like Tai Lung. The line "Violence makes my tummy tingle" makes me want to barf. Po's fathers played did nothing worthwile, but it was nice to see them, better than nothing, I guess. Maybe fujo bait? (I'm kidding). Seeing the trailer, I though Zhen looked like some thing from Animal Jam, but I got to like her throughout the story. Shifu was treated like a complete joke in the movie. One big thing, however, was how Shifu was so insistent in Po getting a successor. It took Oogway hundred of years (maybe close to a thousand, but my memory is spotty) to choose someone (Po) as the dragon warrier, and yet Po, still in his prime tip-top adult shape ready for kung-fu fighting action, needs to choose the next dragon warrior after being so for a few years.

Also, the powerscaling was off the charts. That's how they handled both the villain and Zhen (until the end, where she's given strengths and weaknesses and is learning kung-fu, which I appreciated)

Some things I liked.

Po's characterization, albeit spotty, is something I kind of like here. I sort of comprehended him as "silly, but serious when he needs to be (in a sort of "masking" way, in which he's not a silly or wack as he let's on; Gon from HunterxHunter comes to mind.)" which is honestly not bad. However, it was jarring at first, before I came to that conclusion, since it honestly felt like he was being reduced to how he was in the first movie. I do like the "not as airhead as he let's on" idea, though.

The foreshadowing was neat, too. Zhen's ear tag comes to mind. Throughout the movie we see Zhen with a green geometric (representing Chameleon) tag on her ear. To add, we're leading to think that the Armadillo raised her when we me him(?), but then why would the Armadillo and the rest of the underground group hate Zhen? Because she's with Chameleon. It was good foreshadowing that didn't just explicitly tell me she was working with the Chameleom. Too often I can guess plotlines and plot switches at the very story, but Zhen was a complete surprise, which is great.

The comic art bits were great, too, butoften felt out of place.

Honestly, the part I loved the most was when Tigress and the rest of the 5 appeared, but we all know how that went. it was also nice how Po and Zhen's relationship was portrayed. There's no romantic implication, and she seemed to be a good deal younger than him.

Extra bits

It's hard to judge how long the 4th movie is from the 1st. With Oogway's peach tree being just fine. Po's peach tree was around a meter-ish (maybe less). Zhen's being simply a sprout. Peach trees tend to grow pretty fast (someone's peach tree online grew to 3 meters in 10 years), so that puts it to 2 years of being dragon warrior (definetly not enough), or, if they pruned it in some style similar to bonsai pruning, around 10-20ish.

Overall.

It's definetly not a bad movie. It's definetly not terrible, either. Just severely middling. It's great for kids to watch (maybe not their parents), and it's entertaining, but it lacks depthness to it. Overall, I'd rate it (with my biased opinions) somewhere between 5/10 and 6/10.

I feel like absolute shit today so here are some Centricide arima headcanons before I die.

Commie

He'd definitely be a polaris (snow arima), since they were bred for manual labor and make up a large amount of the work force in Sahira. Also they are built for cold climates and if you wanna go off the Russian stereotype then. Yeah.

Since Polaris arimas are not exactly bounded by hierarchy through eye colors, he'd likely have silver eyes like most of his species. Unless for some reason he's an albino in which case they're pink.

He would have a large amount of experience in both cart pulling in animal form and building railroads in human form, so in short he would be fucking ripped.

Since he is an authoritarian, he would naturally be a high class. So that basically means he would have a very large wingspan and a threatening aura to him. Personality wise, this makes him very serious and easily angered. (He would try to seem more like a mid class though since he probably thinks that the arima pack hierarchy system is some bullshit, which it is but not according to genetics.)

Ancom

This is probably going to be the easiest one. Okay. So Ancom would be a mid class porizanian (common land dweller). This, appearance-wise, makes quem have green eyes. Green eyed porizanians are all afab though so qui is trans but we already knew that.

Qui lives in Kinshwa among a bustling human population so qui does not transform too often, this would make quem likely not be as used to transforming as Commie and it would feel odd to quem to be a literal dragon for longer than two hours.

Qui is nineteen years old in my headcanon, which for this arima version, qui would likely be very energetic and interested in starting shit since most porizanians around this age tend to be rowdy and rebellious, which is also why I picked this type for quem.

Lastly, qui is twinkish and probably not very muscular since qui refuses to eat humans. Which from a moral standpoint is a good thing, but well since qui's a middle class arima, it would definetly stunt quis growth and strength.

Qui got arrested one time for throwing a Molotov at a nobleman's house but got away unscathed because Ancap paid for it. Quis also a runhead and it's a miracle qui hasn't overdosed yet.

Ancap

I had to think about this one. Since Ancap is canonically a multi billionaire, I needed to find some way to show that he's prideful. If this were just simply a Chernov headcanons page I would definitely make him a Tulitnan Borrizeniya (like Vasily) since they are known to be very wealthy and are often stuck up. However, I think simply a genetically middle class yellow glowing meridianae (water/fish arima) would work for him.

Now because of this, Ancap wouldn't touch Commie with a 10 foot pole from the fear of being eaten. High class arimas are historically known to eat or attack middle class ones who aren't part of their packs. But Commie just fucking hates Ancap anyway so yeah they have a bit of an unstable relationship.

Ancap lives in a mansion and is very paranoid about high classes so he doesn't often leave. He has human servants and such probably and also lives in Kinshwa, so he hangs out with Ancom a lot when he DOES go outside. (Libunity bois)

Ancap is fluid in transformation and is typically more in the form of a snake than his human or arima forms. Ancom calls him snake man because of this and it's funny.

Blueman

Blueman is a high class purple eyed porizanian, no doubt. Since he is canonically mean and controlling, and also authoritarian.

Blueman sees humans as an inferior species and wants to wipe them out. He is also a Zhen and so he thinks this about Lillycans too. Because come on he's racist, not just speciesist. He looks in the mirror every morning and does the Zhen salute. He also probably has a horse.

He is equally if not more violent than Commie in attacking nature. He is swift and light on his feet since he practices attacking shit more than anything else. Blueman is mostly in arima form because he feels weak and inferior in human form. So he doesn't transform often.

He uses the word "nokoniy" all the time like it's as common as yes and no. He has no problem using offensive slurs and making people feel small as said in canon. He is from Sanria so he feels as though he is entitled to use these words because he is "built different".

Yeah I'll probably draw these later.
