Is the darkest minds good? I havent read the book its based on so i have no idea what to expect

I really liked it!! I hadn’t known it was a book before seeing it tbh I just found it when I looked up showtimes around me bc my brother took me to a movie for a late birthday thing

the general story is that ruby daly is one of only ~ 10% of american (possibly global) children to survive a plague that only affected them, and in surviving she developed powers. the government immediately went about gathering up children who survived as soon as they learned they had powers and put them in concentration camps, as long as they weren’t deemed too dangerous

the levels are green (increased intellect and comprehension), blue (telekinesis), yellow (electrokinesis), red (to be revealed later, marked only as DANGEROUS), and orange (marked only as LETHAL)

ruby tests as an orange, but using her power (which ends up being telepathy and emphatic enhansion/mind control) makes the doctor mark her as the lowest priority, green, and manages to live in the camp for six years.

she breaks out, gets away with the help of some people who she later feels unsafe with and runs from, and is picked up by a small band of other escaped children who are looking for a place where escaped kids can supposedly live in peace, with no adults and no government.

a lot of stuff happens! it was very fun. positive points:

ruby daly is a black girl with natural hair

ruby is incredibly compassionate and caring

there are multiple other characters of color who are not just plot points/fodder for saving The White Boy

the white boy, liam, is not the center of the film, even in the romantic moments between him and ruby

negatives:

unnecessary romance between liam and ruby

ruby is suffering so much and I can’t protect her

it’s a cliffhanger and now I have to read books like a fucking rube
