for the OC ficlet ask X, Y, Z (feel free to discard one letter if u want Im just being a 🤡) prompt: star
OC Ficlet Ask You might be being a clown but I do have Apollo kids with all of those letters! They do have a pretty big age gap here, though (details at the end of the post), so I had to get a little creative... Very loose on the prompt here but ah well :P
Yvonne sighed, pulling the strap of her shoulder bag until it sat more snugly in the hollow between her shoulder and neck. The trip had been long and tiring, but it was nice to visit another part of the world. She wasn't as much of a stargazer as some of her siblings, but the Spanish National Observatory had a great deal of published works that made for an interesting annual read, and as her flight to Greece involved an overnight layover in Madrid, she'd decided she might as well take advantage of her brief stop in Spain with a pre-booked visit to the Royal Observatory.
A young brown-haired girl ran past her as she made her way through the neighbouring park, giggling as she was chased by several other youngsters around her age, shouting in strings of Spanish. Yvonne didn't speak Spanish, but it wasn't so far away from French that she couldn't get the gist of the words.
"Give it back, Ziva!"
"Catch me first!"
"Go that way, head her off!"
Yvonne didn't know what the girl - Ziva - had stolen, but it all seemed to be in jest, so she left the children to their chaos as she continued her trek across the park and towards the Observatory.
The park was busy, but above the laughter of young children and the whisper of light wind in the trees was the sound of a mellow instrument. A cello, if Yvonne's years in cabin seven surrounded by musicians had taught her anything. It wasn't loud, or obstrusive, but Yvonne had always loved listening to her siblings play.
She had some time before she was supposed to be at the Observatory for her visit. A brief detour, following the sound, had her stumbling across a young man perched on a stool, eyes closed as his bow danced across the strings of his instrument.
The piece was familiar, and with a small smile, she sat herself down on a nearby bench and listened, not interrupting. To mortals, it was likely a pleasant but unfamiliar tune, but despite being an instrumental variation, Yvonne would always recognise a camp favourite.
When it finished, she clapped lightly, and he looked at her, his eyes widening as he caught sight of her throat. Yvonne had never got out of the habit of wearing her old camp necklace; her students thought it was quaint, and the fact that several of the designs came from Greek mythology, as far as mortals were concerned, meant that no-one batted an eyelid at a lecturer on Greek history wearing them.
This young man clearly didn't wear his any more, but there was nowhere else where he would have learnt to play that tune.
"Cabin Seven?" Yvonne asked him in English, shifting closer. He met her eyes and nodded.
"You?" he asked, and she smiled at him, at her little brother.
"Me too," she said, "although I was never the best at music."
He shrugged. "Not everyone is," he agreed, because their father was the god of too many things for them all to be good at the same couple of things. "Xavier."
"Yvonne."

For the OC Alphabet Soup, how about Y?
(Also I love you.)
OC Alphabet Soup: Send me a letter of the alphabet A-Z, and if I have an OC starting with that letter, I’ll tell about them.
Technically I only have one oc Y in my Apollo kids (although I have at least one other oc whose name starts with Y which I know you're well aware of!), but if this crops up again I'll cheat and talk about the canon kid I basically built from scratch because they have no canon beyond a first name and ethnicity.
Y is for… YVONNE CALVERT
Tumblr media
like last time I did this game I’ve actually started drawing all of them, so all answers this time will be accompanied by actual Tsari-art of her own ocs.
Yvonne, like most of my OCs, is a fandom OC - specifically, she’s a demigod from Riordanverse.
Pronouns: She/Her Date of Birth: 6th May 1986 Parents: Apollo and Émilie Calvert (a librarian from Quebec City, Canada) Etymology: Yvonne - yew or archer. Calvert - tender of cattle from the Middle English calfhirde "calf herdsman". Years at CHB: 1998-2004 (Year-Round camper) Status: Left camp aged 18 Inherited Domains: Knowledge*, Archery, Healing
Yvonne left camp almost two years before the arrival of Percy, thereby missing most of the canon events. She arrived the same year as Lee and knew Michael and Will for a while; she was still in camp when Luke went on his bad quest but left at the end of that summer.
She's a quiet girl who always has her head in a book and can get irritable if pulled away from whatever world she's exploring. Fiction or non-fiction, it's all the same to her, although if pressed she has a slight preference for historical facts and fiction - but in the case of the latter, will tear apart any inaccuracies to anyone who doesn't escape fast enough. When not reading, she likes listening to her more musically-aligned siblings.
Like all of Apollo's children, Yvonne has a degree of healing ability. It isn't particularly impressive, but she's capable of triage and keeping people alive long enough for other help to arrive. She's also a capable archer and favours the longbow.
Her primarily inherited domain is one of the rarer ones, knowledge. She has a seemingly-unlimited capacity for new information and appears incapable of forgetting anything once she's learned it, especially when it comes to historic events and dates, which she has a particular preference for.
After leaving camp, she went on to study history at university and is now a respected lecturer and researcher of Greek history.

The Best Shelling Beaches in America
1 of 10 Photo: Larry Gerbrandt/Getty
Sanibel Island, Florida
Experts crown Sanibel, off Fort Myers in Southwest Florida, as the best U.S. shelling spot, and one of the best in the world. Seashells cover the beaches, tinkling like wind chimes as they tumble over one another in the waves. Shell fanciers should also visit The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum and the annual Sanibel Shell Fair and Show held there every March. Low-key development, abundant wildlife, and great restaurants make the island a wonderful all-around getaway.

Cumberland Island, Georgia
Seventeen miles of virtually unpeopled Atlantic beach allow leisurely browsing of un-picked-over specimens, including sand dollars. No bridge reaches this barrier island just north of the Florida line, and the National Park Service strictly controls access by ferry. So beachcombers may go hours without seeing another person, though birds and other wildlife abound. Shark teeth can often be found on the marsh (west) side of the island.

Eleuthera Island, Bahamas
Supreme opportunities follow hurricanes, which pile mounds of shells onto the beaches. Those who prefer not to wait for bad weather can find a huge variety of specimens by snorkeling in the shallow waters just offshore. Eleuthera is one of The Bahamas’ “Out Islands,” only an hour or so by air from Fort Lauderdale or Miami. Visitors should expect an adventure―no-frills accommodations, no shops to speak of, but plenty of local seafood.

Flag Ponds Nature Park, Lusby, Maryland
Most of the shells at Flag Ponds, along the Chesapeake Bay south of Annapolis, are fossils dating back millions of years. They’ve come from the Calvert Cliffs, a 30-mile stretch of what was the sea bottom during the Miocene Epoch. Today’s bay determinedly chews into the cliffs, freeing the shells, shark teeth, and other fossils within. The park opens daily during the summer and weekends year-round. Calvert Cliffs State Park, just south, also encompasses a small public beach worth searching. Warning: Everyone should stay away from the unstable cliffs themselves.

Bandon, Oregon
West Coast beaches don’t provide great bounties of shells, partly because the mighty Pacific Ocean waves tend to chew up most specimens. Still, the beaches near the charming seaside town of Bandon may harbor some finds, especially in protected areas such as the mouth of the Coquille River. As consolation prizes, winter storms also toss up Japanese glass fishing floats and such semiprecious stones as agate and jasper.

Galveston, Texas
The Gulf of Mexico loves to decorate its coast with shells–in fact, the EPA considers the beaches along the Gulf the best in the whole continent for shelling. Along the Texas shoreline, Galveston Island’s western end usually offers prime pickings. When cold fronts roll in from the north, experienced shellers bundle up and hit the beach. The wind pushes the water away from shore, exposing lots of fresh sand for prospecting.

Ocracoke Island, North Carolina
The rare Scotch bonnet, state shell of North Carolina, sometimes turns up here. (Each fragile, beautiful shell, shaped like an egg with spiral bands and brown spots, once housed a sea snail, a remorseless predator that feeds on sand dollars and other small sea creatures.) Even during the frenetic summer season, few tourists venture outside Ocracoke Village at the south end of this 16-mile-long Outer Banks island. In winter, when restless weather stirs up all sorts of treasures from the deep, only the gulls are likely to share the northern beaches.

Great Peconic Bay, Long Island, New York
The Great Peconic Bay, between the North and South forks of Long Island, once was the nation’s biggest source of bay scallops. In the mid-1980s, algae wiped out most of the population. Still, the beaches of this surprisingly unspoiled area do contain some bay scallop shells (the official New York state shell) as well as other treasures. And, thanks to restoration efforts, the scallops have been recovering.

Stinson Beach, California
As with most West Coast shores, the hunting on Stinson Beachdoesn’t compare with that along the Gulf. Still, this beach just north of San Francisco does supply limpet shells and sand dollars―plus lots of surfers, a couple of nice seafood restaurants nearby, rugged natural beauty, and endearing small-town quirkiness.

Tunnels Beach, Kauai, Hawaii
Several beaches on the north shore of Hawaii’s “Garden Isle” yield nice shell harvests, especially in the area around Haena, near the end of the road that doesn’t quite circle Kauai. We’re singling out Tunnels Beach for nostalgic reasons. Legend has it that the puka shell-necklace craze began here in the 1960s. A protective reef makes the water ideal for snorkeling, too.

jared-kushner-relative-and-adviser-to-trump-to-avoid-housing-voucher-policies
Jared Kushner, the son-in-law and top adviser to President Donald J. Trump, will recuse himself from any policy discussion related to federal rental assistance for low-income tenants because his real estate firm’s Baltimore-area properties receive income from the U.S. housing department’s voucher program, the White House said.
Three apartment complexes owned by the Kushner Cos. in Maryland lease units to tenants whose rent is partially paid with Housing Choice vouchers. Those vouchers, previously known as Section 8, are financed by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The Kushner Cos. own 17 complexes in Maryland. HUD confirmed that the Pleasantview Apartments in North Baltimore, the Carriage Hill Apartments in Randallstown and Highland Village Townhomes in Lansdowne are “HUD-assisted,” meaning that the agency pays part of the rent for voucher-holding tenants.
The agency would not say how much federal money has flowed to the Kushner Cos., which owns apartments in Baltimore, Baltimore County, Prince George’s County and in New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Sinclair Broadcast denies deal with Trump campaign

Sinclair Broadcast Group denied Monday that it gave favorable coverage to Donald Trump‘s campaign on its local news programs in exchange for access, calling recent reports about its presidential election coverage “misleading” and saying it offered the same opportunities to both major candidates.

… (Lorraine Mirabella)
A White House official with knowledge of Kushner’s holdings told The Baltimore Sun that the New York businessman will comply with all financial disclosure rules and recuse himself “from any particular matter concerning HUD’s rental voucher program.”
Some analysts say Kushner needs to do more to distance himself from his family’s business to avoid violating federal ethics rules that prohibit officials from participating in decisions that could benefit them financially.
Richard W. Painter, who was the chief ethics lawyer to President George W. Bush, said federal conflict-of-interest law specifically bars Kushner from involvement in decisions that might affect his properties — and his immediate colleagues should also keep their distance.
“Although [White House] staff could legally get involved in those matters,” he said, “the appearances would be awful.”
Painter has raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest between Trump’s business empire and his administration. Painter, Obama ethics lawyer Norm Eisen and others filed a lawsuit last month claiming that Trump is violating the Constitution’s emoluments clause by accepting payments from foreign governments at his hotels and other businesses.
Kushner, 36, is married to Trump’s daughter, Ivanka. Trump has named him senior adviser to the president.
As a senior government official, Kushner is required to submit a financial disclosure form to the Office of Government Ethics, the agency that oversees ethics in the executive branch. His form has not yet been made available to the public.
HUD budgeted nearly $21 billion last year to provide rental housing assistance to 2.2 million low-income families through the Housing Choice voucher program. The department also budgeted nearly $11 billion for a program that supports “12 months of funding for rental assistance contracts with public and private owners who maintain affordable rental housing for 1.2 million families,” according to HUD documents.

A spokesman for the Kushner Cos. said Kushner resigned as chief executive on Jan. 19, the day before Trump was inaugurated, and is selling off his interests in all foreign investments and other businesses. Some assets are to be sold to a trust controlled by family members.
The spokesman said the Kushner Cos. has no plans to sell its Maryland holdings.
According to the Office of Government Ethics, employees should “obtain specific authorization before participating in certain Government matters where their impartiality is likely to be questioned.”
A federal criminal statute prohibits executive branch employees from participating personally and substantially in a particular government matter that will affect their own financial interests or the financial interests of certain individuals, including relatives, with whom he has ties to outside the government.
Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, the top-ranking Democrat on the House oversight committee, said Kushner’s HUD income should be disclosed.
“The receipt by President Trump and his family of taxpayer funds through public housing programs creates the possibility of conflicts of interest for them and for the Department of Housing and Urban Development,” the Baltimore lawmaker told The Sun. “I believe we need a full accounting of how much money President Trump and his family are making from American taxpayers and how these conflicts are being managed.”
Cummings has pressed his colleagues to investigate Trump’s finances for potential conflicts of interest.
The Maryland properties — the majority of which are in Middle River, Essex, Dundalk and other Baltimore County locations where Trump was popular — are part of the large rental portfolio that Kushner has amassed over the years in what one apartment industry publication termed “second-tier cities such as Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Cincinnati, and Toledo.”
Kushner’s tenants in Maryland don’t necessarily know that their landlord is a member of the nation’s most powerful family. The properties are owned by Westminster Management, a division of Kushner Cos.
Westminster owns more than 20,000 multifamily apartments, according to the Kushner Cos. website.

Maryland land records show that Kushner sometimes bought in bulk, borrowing hundreds of millions of dollars to take over several complexes from other companies.
Some of the properties have interesting lineages. The legal description of the land on which the Essex Park complex sits, for example, includes the note that it was “conveyed by Lord Calvert Land Grants.”
Other properties were previously owned by construction magnate and philanthropist Henry Knott and Victor Posner, the Baltimore-born corporate raider who began amassing his wealth by building low-cost housing in Baltimore County, then selling the units but keeping the land and lucrative ground rents.
Eight of Westminster’s Maryland properties were part of one of the region’s largest-ever real estate deals at the time they were sold in 2003. They were among 12 apartment complexes sold by Knott’s descendants for hundreds of millions of dollars to Sawyer Realty Holdings.
Kushner’s interest in this area does not surprise commercial real estate professionals.

About a week ago, I posted a WIP graphic that represented a bunch of the Apollo kids (mostly ocs but including canon) using their camp necklaces.  At the time, it went back to only kids that were in camp when Will was, but that’s now been expanded as far back as all the kids Lee ever knew!
Another change is the post-TOA year bead; originally I had a design for The Sun and the Stars, but as that book’s looking more and more like it’s taking place the same summer as TON and therefore won’t have its own bead, I’ve replaced it with a new design!
As always, bead designs are free to borrow with credit, but please don’t use my ocs’ names!  (You are, however, welcome to use the full names I’ve assigned to Yan, Jerry and Gracie, once again with credit).
Questions about the beads or the ocs or canon kids are all very welcome!
I’ll list their names properly under the cut in case the graphic’s a bit hard to read, as well as preferred names if different, pronouns and nationalities!  Head counsellors are also indicated, and whether they’re an oc, named canon character, or unnamed canon character.
All are listed in order of arrival at camp.
Kim Ha-Yoon //  김 하윤  (she/her); South Korean (*head counsellor) - oc Kelly Boyd (she/her); Irish - oc Ray Strickland (he/him); American - oc Aarohi Sengupta //  আরহী সেনগুপ্ত (she/her); Indian/Bengali - oc Owen Bell (he/him); American - oc Lasse Åkerström (he/him); Swedish - oc Elizabeth “Lizzy” White (she/her); American (*head counsellor) - oc Gabriel Moss (he/him); American - oc Mitchell “Mitch” Green (he/him); Canadian - oc Gilbert “Gil” Weeks (he/him); American - oc Michelle Best (she/her); American - oc Lauren Best (she/her); American - oc Emily Teague (she/her); American (*head counsellor) - oc Baird McNeilly (he/him); Scottish - oc Clara Wolff (she/her); German - oc Lyam Pastrana (he/him); Puerto Rican - oc Ceridwen “Ceri” Priddy (she/her); Welsh - oc Lee Fletcher (he/him); American (*head counsellor) - named canon Yvonne Calvert (she/her); Canadian - oc Laura Piper (she/her); American - oc Melody York (she/her); American - oc Helen Sangster (she/her); American - oc Brendan Howard (he/him); Canadian - oc Reece Gold (he/him); American - oc Bran Thrussell (he/him); American - oc Daisy Teague (she/her); American - oc Michael Yew (he/him); American (*head counsellor) - named canon Lear Howard (he/him); Canadian - oc Lawrence Hunter (he/him); Canadian - oc Dawn Harper (she/her); American - oc Phoebe Buckley (she/her); American - oc William “Will” Solace (he/him); American (*head counsellor) - named canon Morton Shepherd (he/him); American - oc Robyn Archer (she/her); American - oc Xavier Campara (he/him); Spanish - oc Joy Norris (she/her); American - oc Alice Tuner (she/her); American - oc Nye Rimmer (he/him); American - oc Sally Farmer (she/her); American - oc Elias Robinson (he/him); American - oc Nathan Lister (he/him); American - unnamed canon Tristan “Tris” Barnes (he/him); Canadian - oc Samson “Sam” Clair (he/him); American - oc Austin Lake (he/him); American - named canon Kayla Knowles (she/her); Canadian - named canon Raphael Diego (he/him); Mexican - oc Emma Bard (she/her); American - oc Cheung Yan //  张焰 (they/them); Chinese/Hong-Kong - (half-)named canon Jeremy “Jerry” Allen (he/him); English - (half-)named canon Gracie Crowe (she/her); American - (half-)named canon Merida Stringer (she/her); Scottish - oc Robin Stringer (he/him); Scottish - oc
(a huge thanks to @burning-moths, their unnamed friend, and @ferodactyl for helping me with Ha-Yoon, Aarohi and Yan’s names and being general sensitivity checkers.  Of course, any persisting mistakes are all on me, not them!)

[Tsari’s] Cabin Seven Kids!
Been working on these for a while - only quick concept doodles so some liability to change especially some of the skin colours - but these are all the Apollo kids that the canon kids would have known, i.e. I populated the entire cabin from my headcanon of Lee’s arrival through to a year post-TOA.  Fifty two campers in all - eight canon and 44 ocs!
I am more than happy to talk about or answer questions on any of these kids, oc or canon, so feel free to ask away!
Names are under the cut in case they’re not legible on the image.  The kids are listed in age order based on DoB, not based on their date of arrival.
