Mickey stretches, twists his torso and legs like he’s wringing out a sponge. Bleary eyes blink awake, squinting against the sunlight beaming through his window.

He sighs. Good morning.

It’s April 1st. The day of fools. He already feels like a fool, if he’s being honest, every day of his life. But that’s something he can sort through later. Right now he has some catching up to do.

He rolls over in bed and grabs his laptop where it rests on the dresser. He pulls it into his lap, flipping open the screen and waiting for it to light up. When it does, it’s less than a minute before he’s logged into tumblr.

What….what the fuck?

There’s something new on his screen, right at the very top. It isn’t an ad, at least he doesn’t think so. He clicks it, hesitant, and nothing happens.

Hm. Strange.

He decides to consult the one tumblr expert he knows.

It’s been a week and a half since they’d started talking. They were friends now — not IRL, but something close — and talked nearly every day. It was becoming an integral and beloved part of Mickey’s daily routine.

Ian had been on tumblr longer than anyone Mickey knew. Except maybe Cassie. But he wanted to talk to Ian.

Mickey does as he’s told. Waits. A few minutes later, he checks his notifications.

He takes a screenshot, crops it, and sends it to Ian.

Mickey checks. Cassie twice, Victor, Liv, Zoe, and Ian 4 times.

Mickey clicks on Ian’s username and opens his blog. There, in the navigation section, is a little orange paw. He clicks it.

And then, below it, in a purple oval,

He sighs. Clicks it. A tiny green box shows up at the bottom of the screen, altering him to the fact that his boop had been sent through.

eternitysgate: BOOP BOOP BITCH fcku-up: you are a child eternitysgate: I AM A GOD eternitysgate: you don’t understand mick, i’ve been doing this for an hour and a half and i’ve never felt more alive fcku-up: happy for you eternitysgate: oh come on, you know you love it eternitysgate: now go boop cassie back or she’ll come whining to me about it fcku-up: FINE 🙄

It’s been two hours and, much like Ian, Mickey has never felt more alive. He’s been booping almost the entire time, his meter ticking up, up, up. He’s booping friends, mutuals, strangers, people he’s seen in his notifications and people he’s never seen before in his life. Anyone and everyone.

He and Ian are in what the user base has declared a “boop war” — flooding each other with boops, not caring if the other person boops back first. It’s madness and Mickey can’t stop laughing.

There are memes now. Viral posts made mere minutes ago. He’s never seen anything like it, never been a part of anything like it.

Mickey bites back a grin. 

eternitysgate: do you think they’re gonna keep this around after the day is done? fcku-up: idk, maybe fcku-up: part of me hopes they do eternitysgate: it would be a never-ending war eternitysgate: wake up every morning, ride into battle fcku-up: eventually you’d admit defeat eternitysgate: HA! not likely

It goes on like that for hours. They talk for the entire day. It isn’t all about boops, little tidbits slip in between the cracks – what did you have for lunch? how’s your sister? do you have to work tonight? – but the main focus is this inane game they’re playing, this innate sense of bonding they’re experiencing with each other and everyone else.

Mickey can’t help but feel like he’s a part of something, finally. In this game, and in the grand scheme of things. He has friends. Mutuals. People that want to engage with him. Acknowledge him.

To see and be seen.

The sun set ages ago. Mickey is beneath the covers, laptop on his thighs. He boops Cassie, then Liv. Then goes and super boops Ian, followed by an evil boop. He wishes there was something higher than an evil boop, but alas. He decides to send another.

and b) i'll microdose you on the headcanon of probably ian having a tiktok account like this and. mickey completely falling for his scheme. maybe there's singing added somewhere along the line. all "ian's voice is mickey's favourite sound (to fall asleep to), actually". mainly because i reread yqhbr on my train ride here today and got re-obsessed with the whole social media au schtick.

Yes to any and all social media AUs! (one day I’m gonna get my thoughts together about an onlyfans AU) yes I love angsty guitar player Ian! And the rings! IAN’S VOICE! What if Ian goes live sometime on TikTok and people request songs? He does it at night mostly, when he can’t sleep. Mickey can’t sleep either so he requests some lesser known songs but Ian knows most of them and they start interacting (Mickey writing in the chat and Ian speaking to the camera). Now that I think about it, Mickey feels like a technophobe. Like, there's no way that guy could even figure out Instagram. But Ian probably has it so, Liam helped him download it and he's only following Ian and commenting inappropriate shit on a picture of Ian's tomatoes because he doesn't give a shit if everyone can see his comments! Ian still uses Facebook because he's in all the Gardening Tips Facebook groups.

OKay here's a thought - What do you think Mickey discovers that he actually enjoys from Ian's west side activities? Does he enjoy yoga or Pilates ? Ian liked him flexible Does he learn how to swim and actually does it on his own? They have to cook now, is Mick any good? New friends??

first of all, i am such a slut for a good tumblr au. i'm sure you know all about @/hornygaythug by @whatthebodygraspsnot & YQHBR by @celestialmickey? so so good, so so different lol. also you know i'm hot for tumblr!mickey--he made me develop a whole glove kink during the spicy collab last year! LOL.

instagram au's... there's this one by @jackieq where ian's an ig influencer! but that's the only fic i can think of off the top of my head.

now for your new questions: this got embarrassingly long, so it's under a cut! xx

oh the westside...

i'd personally like to think that they move back to the southside later. buy a nice little house and host the niblings on the weekends... but maybe mickey could get down with the pool & grill life while he's on the westside? he loves a cold beer & a hawaiian shirt, so why not? i could see mickey getting comfortable in the pool enough to float on his back? turn his brain off a bit? but i don't see him being a big swimmer or even liking too much chaos while he's in the water. he'll gladly throw a child in though!

do i think mickey would enjoy yoga or pilates? hell no. the only workout that man needs is kev-fit & fucking. but ian could probably talk him into going anyway. especially after he loosens up a bit & feels how much further ian can bend him in half.

i do think that they likely make friends, some guys who are more their speed or even some chicks that live in the building & give mickey a hard time in a way that he likes. oooohmygosh now i want them to get lesbian friends LOL. someone write the fic! & yeah, i think they both get pretty handy in the kitchen, especially after ian starts growing vegetables. it's a fun way to be together & they both start to enjoy food in a way that they never could before. plus, i don't think mickey wants to be embarrassed in public, like if he doesn't know what something is or doesn't like something, so he feels more comfortable experimenting at home.

i do think that ian would do something to commemorate mickey on his body, a la ian galager. but they're definitely not going to be rocking matching tattoos or any fairy shit like that. i could also see them getting their wedding bands tattooed, but they're both so sensory, they probably love the feel of wearing it... of cool metal on their skin... feeling each others on their bodies... yeah....

as far as the tits... eh, i think mickey probably doesn't give a shit. they're just there. s'not like he has to look at them that often. maybe ian covers them up one day with a real tribute piece? but i'd like to think it becomes kind of funny. like, i could totally see mickey being like, "this f-slur's got a pair of tits on his back" during a drinking game at a party. but i also think because they're unfortunately attached to monica, he's probably pretty careful about it?
