"I’ve been worshipped,” he went on. “I’ve been glorified. I’ve been anointed in oils and granted every offering. The guild acted like it was such a gift—to be exalted by mortal men. But I never asked for their adoration. I never asked for immortality. I never asked for any of it.”

Wow, what an impressive read! Especially considering the chances the author took with the unique mixing of genres.
Supernatural elements, mysterious, romantic, and horror!!!!! I really was not prepared to love this so much. The writing is gorgeous and had me wanting to soak in every word. Also, the world-building is pure genius and brings this tale to life in a magnificent way.
The characters were definitely the heart of this book. Particularly, the romance between Peter and Wyatt was an emotional overload. I recommend picking this one up!
Out April 2, 2024!
Thank you, Netgalley and Publisher, for this Arc!

Have you read Kelly Andrew's "Your Blood, My Bones"? I'm not reading any more retellings until I'm through with my rough draft (bless my editor for realizing that I need structured deadlines) but its a loose retelling featuring a Hook character who went to Eton.
I haven’t read that one. I’m a bit hesitant to just because it seems so far removed from the original storyline. I’m not big on most retellings that take place in a modern setting or that otherwise take away what I feel are critical elements to the story. The quick reviews and summaries I read didn’t seem to mention much about the Hook character and I’m not sure how or if characters like Tink, Tiger Lily, the Lost Boys, Smee, and the crocodile would show up at all. It just…sounds a bit too much like the names of the characters are the only thing fully connecting them to the original Peter Pan…and even the Wendy character is called “Wyatt” instead of Wendy. So much of what makes me love the original story is related to the context and the “feel” of each character. Taking them out of both London and Neverland, removing them from their historical context in the “real” world, and possibly eliminating many other important characters in the story just washes away a lot of what makes the characters feel like themselves, ya know? Is Hook who isn’t a pirate and has no crocodile or Mr. Smee really a Hook at all? Is Peter who doesn’t have a Tink or Lost Boys really a Pan? Is “Wyatt” who seems so dark and jaded about life really the same gentle, kind, motherly Wendy we all know and love? I don’t feel like they are. I may check it out at some point, but it probably won’t make the list of retellings I have at the top of my TBR list.

Rating: 4.5/5
Book Blurb: A seductively twisted romance about loyalty, fate, the lengths we go to hide the darkest parts of ourselves . . . and the people who love those parts most of all.
Wyatt Westlock has one plan for the farmhouse she's just inherited -- to burn it to the ground. But during her final walkthrough of her childhood home, she makes a shocking discovery in the basement -- Peter, the boy she once considered her best friend, strung up in chains and left for dead.
Unbeknownst to Wyatt, Peter has suffered hundreds of ritualistic deaths on her family's property. Semi-immortal, Peter never remains dead for long, but he can't really live, either. Not while he's bound to the farm, locked in a cycle of grisly deaths and painful rebirths. There's only one way for him to break free. He needs to end the Westlock line.
He needs to kill Wyatt.
With Wyatt's parents gone, the spells protecting the property have begun to unravel, and dark, ancient forces gather in the nearby forest. The only way for Wyatt to repair the wards is to work with Peter -- the one person who knows how to harness her volatile magic. But how can she trust a boy who's sworn an oath to destroy her? When the past turns up to haunt them in the most unexpected way, they are forced to rely on one another to survive, or else tear each other apart.
Review:
Three friends and their twisted relationship in a cursed small town, an immortal boy being sacrificed and killed over and over, a girl with a dark family legacy and deadly powers, and the boy who is not who he seems at all. Wyatt Westlock never thought she'd be back in her family's farmhouse, the one she inherited after her father's death and all she wants to do is burn it down. This farmhouse, this town, was the start of her heartbreak, and where she lost her two dearest childhood friends, Peter and James. Yet when she goes to inspect the house before setting it on fire she finds Peter strung up in chains in the basement left for dead.Wyatt doesn't know that Peter has suffered hundreds of ritualistic deaths on her family's property. Peter is semi-immortal and bound to the form, locked in a cycle of deaths and painful rebirths... and he's been trapped in the basement for five years waiting for Wyatt to come back... because he needs her blood, he needs to sacrifice and end her line in order to be freed. The spells that had protected the property have unravelled since Wyatt's parents are gone and now the ancient forces that lurk in the woods are getting ready to escape and destroy everything... but the only way to repair the words is to work with Peter, the only person who knows how to harness her powers, yet he wants her dead. Then there is James, the third friend, the one who is back as well, yet he doesn't seem normal and Peter is hiding a dark secret about James... The more Peter reveals to Wyatt about what was really happening in their childhood, what was being done to him and what her family was involved in the more she begins to unravel... yet one thing remains, this twisted love they have. Will they make it out alive? This was a tragic, heartbreaking, yet amazing read. The story has horror elements as well as such a touching story on friendship and love. Peter and Wyatt love each other despite everything, despite how they were never fated to be, despite how many secrets and blood stains they have, they love each other so much. The friendship between all three of them was so sweet. That ending was terrible, terribly sad and so heartbreaking but I understand why it had to be done that way yet I wish it wasn't I wish they all got their happy ending together after the horrors and atrocities they all faced. This book is brutal and angsty yet the romance was so well done and the story really grabs you until the end. I would absolutely recommend this for fans of darker romances and stories!
*Thanks Netgalley and Scholastic, Scholastic Press for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*

A Darker Mischief by Derek Milman
Tumblr media
The Honeys meets The Secret History in a work of dark academia like no other -- a boarding school thriller about a queer teen from Mississippi who finds himself swept into a world of old money, privilege, and the secret society at the heart of it all.
When Cal Ware wins a scholarship to an elite New England boarding school, he's thrilled to leave his past behind. Back home in Mississippi, he was the poor, queer kid who never fit in. But at Essex Academy, he'll be able to reinvent himself. Or so he hopes...
But at Essex, Cal's classmates only see his cheap clothes and old iPhone. They mock his accent, and can't believe he's never left the country, or heard of The Hamptons. Cal, at his breaking point, is about to give up and return to Mississippi when he learns about a secret society on campus -- the key to becoming Essex royalty.
Cal knows he's not exactly secret society material, but to his surprise, he finds an unlikely champion in the handsome, charismatic, and slightly dangerous Luke Kim. As they get swept up in the mystery and glamour of the Rush process, Cal finds himself falling in love for the first time.
But as the initiation rituals grow riskier -- and increasingly nefarious -- Cal must decide how far he's willing to go, and how much of himself he's willing to sacrifice, to save everything and everyone he cherishes most. Because nothing at Essex -- not even Cal's first love -- is quite what it seems.

Beastly Beauty by Jennifer Donnelly
Tumblr media
From New York Times bestselling, award-winning author Jennifer Donnelly comes a revolutionary, gender-swapped retelling of Beauty and the Beast that will forever change how you think about beauty, power, and what it really means to follow your heart.
What makes a girl "beastly?" Is it having too much ambition? Being too proud? Taking up too much space? Or is it just wanting something, anything, too badly?
That's the problem Arabella faces when she makes her debut in society. Her parents want her to be sweet and compliant so she can marry well, but try as she might, Arabella can't extinguish the fire burning inside her -- the source of her deepest wishes, her wildest dreams.
When an attempt to suppress her emotions tragically backfires, a mysterious figure punishes Arabella with a curse, dooming her and everyone she cares about, trapping them in the castle. As the years pass, Arabella abandons hope. The curse is her fault -- after all, there's nothing more "beastly" than a girl who expresses her anger -- and the only way to break it is to find a boy who loves her for her true self: a cruel task for a girl who's been told she's impossible to love.
When a handsome thief named Beau makes his way into the castle, the captive servants are thrilled, convinced he is the one to break the curse. But Beau -- spooked by the castle's strange and forbidding ladies-in-waiting, and by the malevolent presence that stalks its corridors at night -- only wants to escape. He learned long ago that love is only an illusion. If Beau and Arabella have any hope of breaking the curse, they must learn to trust their wounded hearts, and realize that the cruelest prisons of all are the ones we build for ourselves.
