Big Brother Maul is, probably, the worst role model you could have. But lil ‘Soka still thinks he’s the coolest!

I think even funnier than Anakin being a Big War Hero is if he was like. The Temple’s resident tech guy. Cal or Kanan find out who Darth Vader is and they’re like ‘the guy who reset my password???’

The High Republic series confirmed that part of a Jedi youngling’s day in the creche are midday naps on little nap mats, and now the image of all our faves in youngling form curled up on the nap mat is living rent free in my head

I'm not even properly watching Ahsoka, but this took me tf out.
He's like "are you still on about that? 🫤"
In reference to that time he turned to the dark side, perpetuated a genocide and became the face of the fascist Empire for 20 years.
It's so very... him. ❤️

All arguments about Jedi not being a family/being an repressive system are invalid. That’s a 14 year old Jedi kid in a tube top calling the venerable elder who’s helping her ‘gramps.’
Anakin being her Master isn’t what made her Like That™ because Master Sinube explicitly doesn’t know who she is and yet isn’t surprised by this behavior - doesn’t even react to it - so this is likely to be expected of Padawans.
(Also he’s not deaf so he definitely heard her call him gramps but he just doesn’t care.) (Also the clothes are from before she became a Padawan so she clearly can’t be that much of an exception.) (Also old turtle gramps is delighted to tag along and have some fun for once! He’s ready to do mischief! It’s gonna be a teaching/bonding experience with this random kiddo and he wants to go kick some criminal’s butt! Also he and Jocasta don’t tattle on Ahsoka for having lost her lightsaber, they let her deal with it without involving Anakin because they respect her wishes!) (Anyway old Jedi have all the rights.)

Kids in Star Wars are so adorable that it's cruel.
Cruel because they'll most likely end up traumatised by the time they're a teenager.

Sometimes I think about the end of Padawan Lost arc and I'll remind myself that Anakin wasn't just apologizing to Ahsoka but to Shmi too. He couldn't save Ahsoka like he couldn't save Shmi. Even without the nightmares he must have been thinking, "It's happening again. It's happening again. IT'S HAPPENING AGAIN", because once more he's in a position where he has no power to save his loved one. At least in Shmi's case he knows where she is in theory, and felt something wrong. With Ahsoka, Anakin's completely in the dark from start to finish, he can't find her, can't feel her, all he knows is something bad DID happen but has to wait to hear something.
Even the end doesn't really provide any comfort because sure Ahsoka and the others were rescued, but it was out of pure luck Chewie's transmission worked. If the transmission hadn't gone through she and the other younglings were going to be brutally tortured, killed, and then turned into trophies. How do you hear any of that and not feel absolutely useless to the suffering of your charge? From Anakin's perspective, this must have been history repeating itself, but worse, because instead of being ignorant, he was powerless.

like. one thing that is Essential to any Obi-Wan dynamic To Me is that Obi-Wan is Not a kid person, nor does he particularly like or understand kids much(an exception is made for Anakin’s kids however, bc they’re anakins, and anakin probably had baby fever from the age of Baby), and i feel like u are particularly good at translating that vibe? like Obi-Wan with any partner he has: no i’d prefer to be childfree/any children will be an accident, something i do to fulfill expectations meanwhile Obi-Wan with anakin: how can I get more skywalkers? kidnapping?
ooo this is fun, I think my own ideas of obi-wan with children lean more towards ambivalence and bewilderment. he’s not a natural caregiver, but he has read all the parenting books within two days of getting settled with a child. He would not seek them out and doesn’t particularly want them or knows how to translate the care he feels towards them into something they’d understand, but he’s not so bad with children that they’re afraid or discomforted around him. He’s read the books. He’s studied for this 🫡
meanwhile anakin also does not strike me as a natural caregiver either but he’s stressed about it. He hasn’t read the books because he has a confidence thing going on about being good with children but that doesn’t make him actually good with children and the gulf between expectation and reality when he’s around kids stresses him out
when it comes to skywalker’s kids, has obi-wan ever had to once ask for a Skywalker to enter his life?? I imagine his thoughts are less along the lines of “how do I get more of these little guys? should I kidnap them?” and more along the lines of “I will just stand out in the universe with my arms open palms up and a Skywalker will be deposited within 2-5 business days”

Bariss as a terrorist is not problematic just because a good and kind character get assasinated to prop up the MC without any preparation, or bc we lost a good example of a good Master-Padawan relationship, hence giving ammunition to anti-jedi. It’s also, and mostly, because of racism.
The Mirialans are Muslim-coded, they are all women who wear the veil. It doesn't come out of nowhere if fans think that. In the West, if we think “veiled women”, we think Muslims. If the news talks about the problem of the veil, they are talking about the Muslim veil, not the Hindu veil, not the Amish veil, not the Christian veil, and no one hearing them will think for a second that they are talking about things other than the veil Muslim. The veil is a very characteristic element of Muslims for an average person.
(In the movies, Luminara and Bariss aren't even played by white actresses, so we can't say it's 'just a veil, nothing deeper behind'.)
The West has a history with Muslims and terrorism. 9/11 still has an impact today, even more so during the making of TCW. So using a veiled woman as a terrorist is clumsy at best, and not having bad intentions doesn’t erase the impact this representation has.
This reinforces the stereotype of the Muslim terrorist used to harass and oppress members of this religion. I don’t make this “shortcut” between Bariss Muslim-coded and terrorism because I think all Muslims are terrorists. I do it because I live in a country where the veil is considered a symbol of evil, where women who wear it are insulted and attacked, where laws are created to prohibit them from displaying their religion and/or culture.
The fact that the writers chose Bariss to play this role is certainly intellectual laziness, but they could, and should, have thought about what that entailed. “Think before you act” is not a lesson that only applies to Jedi.
Never heard of ‘queer-coded villains’? This is when authors attribute traits associated with queer people to bad guys, hence demonizing these traits. Did these authors think their villains were queer? In the vast majority of cases, no. They simply used traits often associated with villains to emphasize the evil side of theirs without thinking more than that. The absence of bad intentions does not cancel out the damage it causes.
And all this reflection is based on the principle that the parallel between the Mirialans and the Muslims is involuntary. I haven't seen a quote from LucasFilm saying anything, but I find it hard to believe. The Jedi were created to be extremely diverse, in direct opposition to the Empire made up of mostly old white human men, and this is not the first time that Lucas has drawn inspiration from cultures and religions existing in our world, especially Arab populations. There is no reason to think that he did not intentionally use Muslims to create Bariss and Luminara.
The most absurd thing is to think that LucasFilm is incapable of being racist. These are the same people who whitewashed the clones, who used Arab populations as very clear inspiration for a group of violent slavers who communicate only through pig squeals and will be massacred by a white man without any real consequences. The same people who, after being acquired by Disney, will replace a black character with his white neo-Nazi abuser in his role as main character/love interest, who will whitewash an already animated character, who will create clones superior to the others who are incidentally more white, who will cast a white actress for a character who clearly had Arab features in animation.
So no, we don’t have a problem with Bariss being Muslim-coded bc we think Muslims are terrorists, but bc the stereotype of Muslims being terrorists exists and is extremely harmful to the Muslim community.
If you can’t see that, check your own bias and bigotry.
