Izutsumi character study

#dungeon meshi #izutsumi #One of my goals for this year was to spend more time doing art studies. #What better way to start than with my favourite danmeshi character (not seen: a whole page of figuring out her features) #I feel like she is by far one of the most poorly understood characters in the series. Partially due to her 'late party member' status. #'She's abrasive and mean' - 'she's a picky eater' - 'she's a catgirl who acts like an asshole cat ' YES and that is the point! #Everyone in dungeon meshi is traumatized and messy about it but izutsumi is just less polite in how she tries to cope. #Izutsumi is a extremely traumatized teenager who has utterly lacked autonomy her entire life. #She is the epitome of a “If I can just have X thing then all my problems will be solved!” character. And the X is 'Freedom'. #Her epilogue was one of the best and wrapped up her character so wonderfully (WARNING: I WILL NOW SPOIL PART OF THE ENDING) #Because she finally gets her freedom! She can go where she wants to and she doesn't need anybody! Yet...it doesn't fix her. #She is so focused on doing only what she wants that she forgets her own needs. Sometimes you have to eat the things you don't want. #And sometimes you have to face the hard truths that you need more than just one thing to make you happy. #Life is not all about only seeking pleasures and avoiding pain. You need to be balanced in order to grow. #Eat your vegetables (including the metaphorical ones: I am eating more art veggies this year by doing art studies!!!)

i was in a zoom meeting (cameras off) with my team at work (about 15 people on the call) yesterday (tuesday)

meeting was informal (and included discussion of easter) and at the end my boss asked if anyone had anything fun going on this week

i decided to share that passover is wednesday night and that i’m excited for it

normally boss would ask follow-up questions (if i’d said i was doing an easter egg hunt there would definitely have been lively conversation)

instead boss sputtered for a bit and then said “happy..good for…i’m excited for you?” and everyone else stayed on mute. she ended the meeting almost immediately after.

honest to god you’d think these gentiles had heard me announce i’d be snacking on christian babies this weekend. and some of them might believe that! (they live in a very conservative area in wisconsin, i’m in minneapolis)

at least i got to make them uncomfortable for once instead of the other way around 😇

look I am not someone who thinks cannabis is some panacea but holy fucking shit. one, that is Not How Brain Development Works and two, the relationship between cannabis use and schizophrenia is more complex than “if you smoke weed you will develop schizophrenia.” (The linked article, which is pretty anti-cannabis, states several times that while cannabis use can cause psychosis – which is different than schizophrenia – in some people, development of schizophrenia has a lot to do with other factors, like genetics, besides just “did you smoke weed?” We know that cannabis use is correlated with higher likelihood of developing schizophrenia, but that does not mean cannabis usage causes schizophrenia.)

also I think that if you are saying this shit in a ***policy/legislation position*** you need to show more proof and explain the complexity better than just spouting pseudoscience (the brain development thing) or oversimplifying a very complex topic (the “cannabis is linked to development of schizophrenia” thing). but what would I, a person with a public health background who does policy research as part of my job, know about that? after all, I’m just a crazy schizophrenic person with a schizophrenia-spectrum disorder so clearly anything I say on the issue is ill-informed and a sign I don’t have perspective on my illness! it is a genuine and legitimate criticism that the drizzt series in its early books is not so great with including a lot of female characters that like, dont meet unfortunate fates or get pushed out of the greater story some other way, but at the same time hitting the apparent tipping point with neverwinter quartet is genuinely hilarious because every female character from then on is just “i am delightfully unhinged in very specific ways and i will be showing up in the narrative again, this is a threat”

(like credit where credit is due, when he DOES write female characters in the earlier books, they are pretty good, i just wish there was More Of Them in a lot of cases, but post-timeskip stuff is the tipping point for “yeah everyone in this series is fucking Unhinged (positive)”)
