in my feelings thinking about nancy telling carson she might stay at george's before going to meet ace. in my feelings thinking about nancy waiting for ace at the loft and when he doesn't show up she doesn't just go home she goes to the historical society to double check because she wants to have this conversation. in my feelings thinking about ace not realizing he's invisible and thinking nancy is just ignoring him because she's mad and chasing after her. in my feelings thinking about nancy telling george about ace wanting to talk and trying and failing not to appear sad and longing. in my feelings thinking about ace telling hannah he can get through to nancy despite her doubts. in my feelings thinking about nancy feeling ace's touch across a dimension. in my feelings thinking about ace looking at a friend. in my feelings thinking about that hug. in my feelings thinking about literal true love.

I really dig shows where certain folks outside the main characters end up finding out about the supernatural and just have to deal with that as part of life now.
Like, as fun as it can be to have the protagonists constantly having to hide and talk around mystical happenings, it's so refreshing and delightful to see Nancy Drew, where at first it's a select few "in the know" and then it's like, okay, well, oops, Carson knows now. And apparently McGinnis has known the whole time. And now Owen's in this. And Ryan. And we told John Sanders point blank but he doesn't believe us and it's not worth pushing it. And Connor is not pleased but he knows who to call to handle freaky stuff. And Tamura really ought to believe at this point but he's not going to. And Park is totally down with it. And so on, etc., whatever happens happens.
Why bother hiding it when many hands make blood rituals light work, right?

i can’t decide if my favorite part of this clip is nancy’s delivery of “with...me 😬” or ace’s “oh yeah she’s got a point 🤷” expression but either way i’m going to watch it on a loop forever

My #1 post of 2022
ace's texting style is so fucking funny
switching between you and u with no discernable pattern (very mood)
qualmless double and triple texting without a response
"MEAT HOOKS!!!"
"Nancy? NANCY?" in the same text as if he's shouting out loud
flirting by accusing someone of vandalism followed by work text followed by flirting by complimenting their outfit
"u off today? Maybe come in?"
"9-1-1! Charity Hudson haunting Historical Society?!?!? HELP" bestie this is art put it in the moma
painstakingly crafting a text to ur crush to make a date so you can confess your love then immediately fucking off to an astral plane where you almost get wiped from existence :)

Madison's Character Inspiration
where I pick 6 characters to yoink their storyline and personality with and glue it onto my OC 🤓 (half-joking there, but, they did serve as my core inspiration for Madison in a number of aspects)
Tagging the friends who also did theirs in the Discord server, as well as some other folks to do this with their beloved OC(s) and S/I(s) as well! No pressure by the way, do it if you want to! 💖 @emproleon (the OG!! Thank you for sharing this in the server ❤️) @amberswords @anikasenkujo @funnyvalentineswife @hand-domain @jellyluchi @papersirens @shaylistic @sweetsparklerain @trashbabyart @uminozerol @werewuffgoth @white-cherries @whitespirit91 @zizalovesyou

Ruby Rose (RWBY) - In the very early days of RWBY coming out I fell in love with the young female lead who had a strong sense of moral justice. We've all had our fair share of young protagonists who aim to do a lot for the world they live in and that especially rubbed onto Madison especially in her younger teenage years.
Steven Universe - Steven is described to be optimistic, outgoing, and soft-hearted but also naive and socially oblivious. His journey of maturing throughout the series was something that I got a huge chunk of inspiration from when I was writing down Madison's backstory from birth to the various stages of her life. Madison does go through a similar matter like Steven where she carries heavy burdens at a young age and struggles to keep up with the demands made of her due to her inexperience with life and lack of emotional control.
Nana (Elfen Lied) - If you see art of Madi with horns on her head similar to Nana then I'm sure you can piece two and two together to see that they're of the same species (and personality too ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡ – ✧)). Madison is exactly like Nana in the sense that her empathy for other people's pains is what keeps her from conceding to the part of her genetics that desires to be homicidal. You've also got that bit of lore where Madison has gone through a part of her childhood where she was raised as a test subject in a research institute which I'll share more in the future.
Nancy Drew - The inspiration I got from Nancy and put into Madison's character is her ability to stay determined and help others when she can provide such assistance. I adore how resourceful and independent Nancy is and so I try to emulate that onto Madison especially in her older years. A fun fact is that Madison has a love for books in the mystery genre and reading the Nancy Drew series lead her to be more curious and critical of the world, mentally solving puzzles in her head that she can apply when situations call for a solution.
Akane Tsunemori (Psychopass) - Fun fact here is that Akane's VA Kana Hanazawa is my voiceclaim for Madison and I just love love looovveee Akane so much that I had to put her here as one of Madison's main inspirations! You've got that naïve to callous pipeline characters go through when they soon face the horrific realities of the world which definitely happens to Madison in her late teen and young adult years. Generally polite and respectful thanks to several etiquette classes she took up in high school, Madison earns the respect of fellow peers when they find that she is also intelligent, insightful, and compassionate. Despite having the means to enforce violence with her Stand or her vectors from being a Diclonius, Madison does what she can to deescalate a situation and employ less destructive actions, just like Akane in her former years as an Inspector.
Misaka Mikoto (A Certain Scientific Railgun) - Along with Mikoto and most of these characters, I think I really like the trope of "Friendly and easygoing character with great powers has keen sense of justice and wishes to keep the world safe, but wants to do so with peaceful/harmless means as much as possible….But then gets cold and unfeeling in the process 🙃" way too much that you can see the similarities in all of these characters' backstories and how I'll be incorporating that with Madison too sdkjbsjkd but! the same can be said for Mikoto too with how she does her best to help others to the point where she sacrifices her own wellbeeing for their safety.

40 days and 40 nights! We’re inching closer to the premiere and all the beautiful pain and pleasure I’m sure it will serve. Only a few new crumbs in show news this week (oh S4 trailer, where art thou?), but we did get a little something from the entire cast this week.
Riley was featured in Station 19 this week as Capt. Farris the union leader as I’d shared in an earlier blog. I enjoyed his scene, look forward to more in the season finale as he shared on IG!
Speaking of the dads, Scott shared an early headshot - so adorable!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meanwhile Leah’s mind was blown when she found out Elemental is closing out Cannes this year, while Kennedy admitted how much pain the final Aglaeca era episode caused (we feel you) in answer to Katie’s complaint about the crew’s amnesia about the fact that they all agreed willingly to call to the sea monster even when Nancy tried to convince them not to.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maddison is visiting England (but tried out an Irish accent with mixed results):
And regarding the men of the Drew Crew, we got another look at Tunji in Queen Charlotte (those curls!) with young Lady Danbury (premiers May 4), while Alex’s series High Desert got a trailer - it’s premiering May 17 with the first 3 episodes, while he will be in eps. 6-8. His gf also shared some more pics from her birthday weekend.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In show news, a few more featured actors popped up on IMDB. We have a second nurse and a new named character, Maggie Lake, in Episode 2, the comic episode featured in the M3gan trailer, and a new character named Keith in Episode 6, the Larry Teng special effects driven extravaganza that Kennedy told us had someone dying “a little”.
Shout out to all the Drewds still hanging in there, and especially folks that continue to make quality content to tide us over like NancyDrewGIFs on Twitter, @hucklebucket and @bethanyactually here on Tumblr, @isa on TikTok whose new edit has almost 76K 87K 140K (!) likes in 24 48hrs, and @pressdbtwnpages, @perfectpurls, and many other great fanfic writers on Ao3. There are many more creators on sm than I can list here, thank you to all!

[never have i ever] no voice to sing, nothing to bloom (1,571 words) - angsty 3.03 re-imagining
Favorite Fic: it’s the nancy drew texting fic, hands down. that one was joyful fun from start to finish and i’m kinda sad writing it didn’t last longer.
Hardest Fic: the as-yet-unpublished ‘a lie away from getting you into the mood’ (aka the second installment of the bitty spark ‘verse). i posted recently about how action is by far the hardest thing for me to write and be happy with, which is why i’m only halfway through this fic despite spending a solid third of my efforts this year chipping away at it.
i’ve started chapter four, like, five different times now it’s driving me up a wall.
Do You Plan to Take Prompts in 2023? i love prompt games as fun, low-stakes exercises so. yes. absolutely.
What was the best thing about 2022? the answer to this question is also ‘a lie away from getting you into the mood’. the fic is my friend, i take it with me everywhere (that is, i have the google docs app open on my phone literally all the time).
What was the worst thing about 2022? co-running a small business is demanding and often exhausting and i did not get to invest the time and energy into writing that i would have liked to.
Any last thoughts for 2022? one of my goals for the year was to write every day, and i accomplished that! didn’t miss a single day out of the year!
and, while it’s exciting for me to be able to say i did that, i will not attempt to do it again. there were definitely days i forced myself to write just to say that i did and it was clear my brain needed some guilt-free time away from any/all of my wips. so, going into 2023, i’ll be relieved to take those days when i need them.
Goals for 2023
finish either the ‘bitty spark’ fic OR devi the vampire slayer
continue keeping track of my daily writing
break 150,000 words (my goal for this past year was to make it to 200,000 and i simply did not have the time or energy so. we’re making the goal to write a little more than this year, but with reasonable expectations about my capacity)

Nancy Drew Posthumous Characters || Real Historical Figures
Marie Antoinette My specialty is Marie Antoinette. Poor Marie. The most misunderstood queen of the 18th century. Marie used to visit the very tower that now belongs to this castle. I’m convinced that this place holds evidence that will forever change the way the world views Marie.
Harry Houdini Did you ever hear about a challenge that J.J. Thompson issued to Harry Houdini back in 1925? J.J. put up a big reward for this Houdini challenge. He must’ve thought the escape was impossible. But Houdini did it and J.J. didn’t have the reward money. From what I can tell, J.J had to give Harry Houdini fifty percent of the theater as the reward.
Pacal This is one of the museum’s most treasured pieces, a carving of King Pacal. Pacal assumed the throne at the age of twelve — can you imagine? That was 615 AD. He ruled for 68 years, at the height of the Maya civilization.
Oliver Cromwell Oliver Cromwell? Ironsides? Hmph. I supposed they don’t teach history any longer in the US. Lady Penvellyn was a rather vocal critics of Cromwell’s policies and helped many of his enemies flee the country.
Abraham Lincoln See, what I didn’t tell you when I gave you that letter that Jake wrote to Ruth is that I also found his diary. Which is how I found out that he’d gotten to be friends with President Lincoln and that he’d gotten a letter from Abe that he knew would be so valuable someday that he always kept it on his person.
Edgar Allan Poe “Is that an old manuscript?”
“By Edgar Allan Poe. Never published. He told her where it was when he was on his death bed. When he died, she took it and run off so Rufus Griswold wouldn’t end up with it. At least, that’s I think that’s what happened.”
Brothers Grimm It was here at university where the brothers’ interest in collecting folk and fairy tales was first piqued. While traveling in France as a research assistant for one of the professors, Jakob became fascinated by a German manuscript of old stories he had found. Interested in keeping the tales and the culture alive, Jakob and Wilhelm began their search for other such tales. The brothers solicited help from their friends, as well as trips to the surrounding countryside, in order to obtain as many tales as possible. A large majority of the tales came from female acquaintances, such as Dorothea Wild and the Hassenpflug sisters, Amalie and Jeanette.
Nefertari “Ah, a love story. Break out the tissue papyrus, because when I’m done there won’t be a dry Horus in the house. Look it up, dear. Ramses II and Nefertari shared a love so cast the world could scarcely contain it. I’m talking about the kind of love you spell capital L, capital O, heart instead of a V, capital E. They stood side by side and ruled the world. But as they saw the years stretch out before them, they were keenly aware that a handful of decades would never cut it. They needed to be together, always.”
“That’s … sweet.”
“And relevant. The ancient Egyptians believed that life was little more than a dress rehearsal for eternity.”
Nikola Tesla Nikola Tesla was a genius, visionary, and inventor who left an indelible mark on the world. With 700 patents to his name, Tesla broke new ground in research and design to usher in a second industrial revolution. Many of today’s technologies are based on Tesla’s designs.
John Hathorne You stand before the remains of Salem’s most zealous, and conniving judge. So lacking in morals was Judge Hathorne, that he sentenced innocents to death while claiming the estates of the dead as his own. Unlike the remorseful Judge Sewall, Hathorne never felt any guilt for his part in the Salem witch trials.

Wednesday review
I just got done watching Wednesday on Netflix, the new Addams Family Spin-off and I have to say ...That was the best thing I’ve seen Tim Burton do in at least a decade.   That was excellent.
Mild spoilers below and a bit of speculation of what may come later.
Wednesday is a spin-off of the very long-lived Addams family franchise.  She is the daughter of a very Gothic, spooky, yet extremely loving, accepting, and surprisingly functional family.
I am aware of what unfortunately happened to the Wednesday fan series with a similar premise but this was unique enough that I don’t think it quite ripped off the fan series that was forced to shut down.  This was a bit like Nancy Drew or Enola Holmes meets Monster High.
The premise is this. Wednesday is sent to a boarding school called “Nevermore” that is specifically for outcasts.  Children with psychic powers, magical abilities, or are some breed of monster.   The main cliques are Fangs = vampires, furs = werewolves, Scales = Sirens (Mermaids with hypnotic powers), and Stoners = Gorgons.   Other creatures turn up such as a Jekyll and Hyde.  Wednesday is a seer and potential witch. This is actually a call back to the original Addams Family where Morticia sometimes used a crystal ball and Grandmama would curse people.
It makes me wonder what Gomez counts as since Morticia’s line are seers (psychics) and witches.
Wednesday finds herself having to solve a who-done-it and also learn to socialize with her new peer group.   Ordinary, non-magical folk are called Normies, while the monsters and magical people are called Outcasts, collectively.
The head of the school is a shapeshifter named Mrs. Weems, played Gwendoline Christine- who most recently was Lucifer in Netflix’s adaptation of The Sandman.
There are so many things I love about this show. Back in my teenage years I was a big Tim Burton fan but I haven’t really liked much of his recent projects.  This was the best thing I’ve seen by Tim Burton in a long, long time.
It’s very atmospheric and visually creative with a classic, Gothic ambiance, one of the original appeals of Tim Burton. The visual of the Hyde monster is very Burton-esque and I absolutely love the intro music by Danny Elfman.
When you watch the Wednesday intro you realize we were cheated out of an intro for Netflix’s The Sandman since Neil Gaiman had been told by Netflix that no one watches the title sequences or cares about them anymore and yet here we have a gorgeous intro done by Tim Burton and Danny Elfman.
Going into watching this I thought I would be disappointed because of Tim Burton’s parental issues, that he might butcher certain characters. I was particularly worried about the depiction of Morticia Addams but no.  She was portrayed surprisingly well.
There’s also a teaser for season 2.
Small note: I did notice the school has a character named Coach Vlad played by a Native Romanian using his natural accent.  Let’s see.  School with actual vampires in it...  A Romanian who knows how to sword fight (teaches fencing) named Vlad, in a school that is about 1/4 vampires.  Yeah...  You’re Count Dracula, aren’t you? A Romanian Vlad in a show or movie with vampires in it is NEVER a coincidence.  I see what you did there, Tim.   He’s Dracula.  You can’t fool me.  Dracula is in the public domain and both Dracula and The Addams Family have interacted with Scooby Doo so it’s long-established that they exist in the same continuity.
It’s also very clear that these vampires work on Dracula rules.  Dracula, in the original Bram Stoker novel, could walk about by day. He just couldn’t shapeshift by day.  And he was weaker by day.  This is how the vampires are walking about in the daylight and are just wearing sunglasses.  They’re following Dracula rules.
Yeah, I’m pretty certain that Coach Vlad is Count Vlad Dracula.
Tim Burton likes Dracula and Frankenstein. And can’t resist referencing them whenever possible, much like Guillermo Del Toro and Frankenstein.  Also when the ancient Baddie gets resurrected in this, the loyal servant that had him resurrected kisses his ring on his out stretched hand. I believe this is a deliberate nod to the Hammer horror movie Dracula ‘72 AD.  Tim Burton loves Hammer Horror.  He even used Hammer’s trademark “Kensington Gore” (bright red edible stage blood) in his 1999 movie, Sleepy Hollow.
Anyway, I really liked this show.   There are some cynical comments about it but I liked it.  It felt like a more-mature version of Monster High with a fairly decent (though slightly predictable) Who-done-it.  I figured out the monster was a Hyde and who the Hyde was by episode 2. The rest of it wasn’t as easy to deduce but that part I figured out right away and the obvious fact that Tyler’s mother had been an Outcast.
It’s a shame they killed off Gwendoline Christie’s character, Mrs. Weems in the final episode.  I hope they find a way to bring her back somehow.  Perhaps a twin sister, or some resurrection. Maybe she could be a ghost. Ghosts aren’t outside the realm of possibility in this show.
I was very pleased that this was not released in October as a typical “Halloween-y” drop.   I like to see Gothic stuff in the “Off season.”  You have no idea how hungry people like me get for good Gothic content outside of the Halloween season.
There were so many nice references to previous incarnations of The Addams Family.  The Title “Addams Family Reunion” is name dropped.  That’s the seldom talked about third Addams Family movie of the 90s that was released direct to video.  The double snaps to enter the chamber of the Nightshade Society.  (The finger snapping is from the original 1960s Addams Family TV show theme song).  Gomez looks like the original Charles Addams comic illustrations.  The line “You’re Kooky” “I prefer spooky” is another reference to the 1960s theme song for The Addams Family. “You rang?” was Lurch’s recurring line in the original TV series.  Wednesday’s behavior in Pilgrim World was a direct not to the Thanksgiving pageant from Addams Family Values.  (Why was a summer camp doing a Thanksgiving pageant in that movie anyway?)
There were so many loving homages and Easter Eggs.  I really enjoyed Wednesday.   After seeing The Invitation and now this, it’s good to see old fashioned Gothic content making a comeback without cynical deconstruction attached to it.
I genuinely really loved this show.

Ummm...
Tumblr media
Why TF would they then “send them out to non? professional people” for promo? How does that work? (and if they are/were, over here, folks!! I’ll happily pimp the shit outta this!
There hasn’t been any “promotion” for The Flash or Nancy Drew, now has there? Actually? Not a whole for (the painfully overrated) Succession....Dudes....TeeVee is an entirely different era, now....
Oh sweet jeebus, the photoshoot....yet, again.....why TF would they do that? Also, can’t PP just take pics and (because film takes forever to develop, ofc) then release them in 4 or 5 years?
And not seeing how this differs from like the past 3 or 4 seasons?
Tumblr media
Errmm....noooo....it was, for part of season 2, the CW’s second or third highest rated show.....it enjoyed a fanbase who bought its stuff.....buuuutt...even that? Was about Cole/jizzy because of what HE brought to it....
This was always their promo, dude....plus, again, shows end....it’s literally how it rolls.
And it, again, is NOT Babyman’s fault....even if he IS a Douchebag..
Also, LBR.....what Racist considers “necessary promo” is a pointless photo shoot in multiple outfits, under a flashing neon sign that reads, “JIzzy/SH endgame 4Evah”...complete with confessional apology tour from Cole about being an OMG!!! Cheatin’ Cheetah/colossal lush....
And PP wasted, OFC....
Tumblr media
Wait....I thought RAS was returning to save y’all???? Seems like you’ve abandoned this one, too??? Also, again, by “good show” Snorty means, “making it mirror my fanfics”....and, she should know good writing, cuz she IS a fic writer, after all!
Tumblr media
Woooowww.....Izzy’s deep in the conspiracy theories, I see. Plus, I thought “the network” wanted ratings and was gonna give you your way?
Tumblr media
Yes. oh so “tragic”, what could possibly be sadder? Then a goofy teevee show giving you your way and instead moving in a different direction.....because your kween can’t keep her hands to herself!
Oh and now they’re doing this just to “punish” you?? Goood lorrrdddd you guys are fucking nuts (and really overestimate your influence/importance. Plus HOW are they “fucking themselves over”, exactly???
And yet....they aren’t doing ANY of it, huh???
Tumblr media
A) “the girl”, huh????
B) No, I thought I “started that rumor” (that’s fact)
C) who TF IS this person, cuz I’ve never seen ANY of this?? And I legit wanna read it.....so it’s a Barfie/Jabi stans who also hates Cole? I mean, I get Kat was a seekrit hate-crusher on Cole.....but she’s publicly just now wet her seat for him since she met him....

Tag meme, tagged by @impishnature! It’s been a million years since I’ve done a tag meme thank you!
Three ships: Aziraphale/Crowley is my main number one always and obviously! But I’ve been enjoying the heck out of Stede/Blackbeard from OFMD lately, and have had a resurgence of love if Timothy/Rhys from Borderlands since I’ve been replaying the games (thanks to you, Imp, aha!)
First ever ship: Hmmm, I think probably Shinichi Kudo/Kaitou KID from Detective Conan? Or maybe something from Naruto?
Last Song: Cursing the Ohio by Matt King - it’s been stuck in my head since it came up on my Pandora earlier yesterday.
Last Movie: Palm Springs - it was a friend’s turn to pick on movie night. Not one I would have picked to watch on my own, but it was fun!
Currently reading: So much fic, as always!
But two that I read recently that I really enjoyed were: In Care of the Dark by PinkPenguinParade (some lovely gomens hurt/comfort!) and Wonderful Indulgences by Beenovabell (lighthouse keeper!Stede because I am a simple creature and I love seeing my faves as lighthouse keepers)!
Currently watching: I don’t really watch much TV. I watched OFMD and that was probably the most recent, but otherwise I just tend to watch youtubers or listen to podcasts while I’m doing stuff at my computer throughout the day. Right now I’m watching Gab Smolders playing Nancy Drew games.

I was saved from given them an answer by my phone ringing, I looked down and saw Nancy’s name. Without thinking twice I answered
“Yeah?”
“Y/N, is everything ok? You said you’d be here in 10 minutes and it’s passed 30 now”
“Yeah I’m good, I just got caught up in something with Jon and the kids”
“So you figured things out with him?”
“No, I just” I look at the kids and Jon who were all still kneeling on the floor “I don’t know” I whispered
“Y/N, dear” Nancy starts “You don’t sound like you wanna come over and no offense, pumpkin...but you’re not 15 anymore, you can’t run away from your husband whenever you guys have a disagreement and by the looks of it, it was a mixture between Jonathan and his temper and you and your mouth! Fire and gasoline if I remember correctly” She angrily said, making me laugh lightly
“See, I knew it!” I heard her clapping to herself “Do you want my advice?”
“Sure” I answered
“Stay there tonight, talk to Jon like a GROWN UP COUPLE WOULD and if you still feel like you need a break you can come by tomorrow and stay as long as you’d like, how does that sounds to you?”
“Sounds good, Nance” I smiled
“Nice, now go on, stay with your family and call me tomorrow to say how long did the make up sex session lasted”
“You’re so unbelievably disgusting! Love ya Nancy”
“Love ya pumpkin. Bye bye”
Once I ended the call I looked at the kids and said
“Well, I think it’s better for us to go downstairs and grab some popcorn so we can watch Moana” I smile fondly
“YAY, MOMMY IS STAYING” They scream and jump as they run towards me, hugging my legs
I laugh “Ok, let’s go stinky bumbs! Choose your sits on the couch”
With that they ran downstairs. I look at Jon, who was still knelt down on the floor.
“Jon, get up please”
“Are you really gonna stay?” His voice is low
“Yes”
“Are you gonna file for divorce?”
“Jon, please” I plead
The hope in his eyes died a little “Can we at least talk about it?”
“We will, later. Once we put the kids down for bed”
“Ok, thank you kitten” He caresses my belly and we hear two impatient kids screaming for us to come downstairs
......................................................
“They’re asleep” Jon says once he comes to sit by me on the couch
“Good, so we can talk now”
He stares at me and I started
“We can’t do this anymore, Jon”
He looks at me with pure fear upon his eyes
“The arguing, the yelling, the saying bad things just to spite each other...never being able to understand each other’s perspective whenever the subject of having more kids appears” I sighed “I just wish you would understand that sometimes it’s difficult for me, difficult for the kids to not have you around. When they have a bad dream they want you to protect them. Last week, Rosie had a nightmare about a man taking her away and she screamed for you. Do you know how much it hurt me seeing her sob because she wanted daddy to scare the mean man away, but daddy couldn’t because he wasn’t here? Sometimes they cry on our way back home from school because they wished daddy was there to pick them up. Things like ‘why is everybody’s else daddy comes to pick them up and ours doesn’t?’, ‘he doesn’t like us?’, ‘did we do something wrong?’, ‘does daddy not love us?’, ‘why daddy has to travel so much?’, ‘can’t he have another job?’...Things like that end me every single time, Jon. Even more because I know the father that you are, I know you love Atticus and Rosie more than your own life! It’s not fair to them but is also not fair to you” I whispered as tears roll down my cheeks. I look up to find Jon’s eyes filled with tears as well.
“Why did you never told me, doll? You should’ve told me that they were thinking that, that you had to explain to them over and over that I don’t leave them because I want to. That is not that I don’t love them but because I love them so much I want to give them everything I’ve never had as a child” Jon’s voice cracks and he begins to sob.
The vision is too much for me to handle it, so I pull him towards me and he hides his face on the crook of my neck.
“I don’t want them to go through what I did Y/N” His muffled voice comes out in hiccups
“I know baby, I know” I caress his hair and all I can do is cry with him
“I’m sorry” He whispered now calmer
I cup his cheeks on my hands “I don’t want you to apologize Jon, I just want you to try to understand that is not that I don’t love you or don’t love our family is just that sometimes it saddens me to hear those things from two kids and I wouldn’t like to hear it from a third one as well” I caress his beard
“I know but, it’s just that, I’ve always wanted this! The wife, the home sweet home, the kids..” His voice fainting on that last word “And when we met I knew that I wanted all of that with you, so I got kinda upset when you said that you didn’t wanted more kids because in my head that was some sort of sign that you regretted” He whispered
“Regretted what Jon?” I ask soothingly
“Us...leaving your family for me, moved in to that shitty one bedroom apartment, running with me to the emergency room because I overdosed on speed, eating tuna sandwiches for a year because you couldn’t find a job and the money I made at CZW was pathetic...getting married, helping me go through abstinence when we found out you were pregnant with Atticus, having the kids, still being married to me after all the shit I’ve put you through” He looks into my eyes “I regret everything I’ve said to you earlier, I was always the selfish one not you! It’s time for me to man up and take responsibilities for my words and actions. It’s time for me to be an actual husband to you and for once let you lean on me and not the other way around” He pressed his forehead to mine “Please Y/N...please kitten, let me make it up to you for all these years. Let me show you how much you really mean to me. How important you are to me, the difference you make in my life! I love you, cherry, please let me fix it..just give me one last chance, I beg you! I promise you I’ll never talk about having another baby ever again, but please” He whispered against my lips
“Jon” I pleaded
“Please, don’t do this to me. I’m so sorry. Don’t leave me...I-I wouldn’t...I couldn’t live without you. I can’t take it, kitten. I just can’t” He’s sobbing again while begging me to forgive him
I pull him towards my chest as I lay us down on the couch. His head is resting on my breasts as he silently cries, murmuring apologies and pleads. I’m caressing his hair and upper back, whispering to him that ‘we will work it out’. Once he’s calmer I ask him to look at me and he obliged
“Promise me Jon, promise me that we will never go down that disrespectful and spiteful path again”
“I promise you! I-I promise you kitten, on my mother’s life” Hope slowly returning to those beautiful blue orbs
“Promise me that whenever one of us feels like is loosing control we will ask for a time out and there’ll be no pressure from the other person to work it out at that moment”
“I promise” He pecks my lips repeatedly “I promise, I promise, I promise”
I can’t help a light chuckle that escaped my lips “Ok Jon, I see you agreed”
“Whatever you say kitten, whatever you want, I’ll do it!” He continues to peck my lips “Tell me you love me, please Y/N, I just need to hear it”
“I love you Jonathan, always have and always will!” I smile fondly
He sighed in relief “I’ll never talk about babies ever again! I promise you that!” He’s eyes had the same sparkle of determination as Atticus’ and Rosie’s
“We can talk about it if you want, but in the future, once the kids are a little bit older, how does that sounds to you?” I offered
I’ve never seen Jon’s eyes acquire such a pure happiness glimpse so fast
“Really?” He asks
“Really. BUT it’s a future thing, not right now!”
“Ok, in the future” He eagerly kissed me
“But can we at least do some training for when the time comes?” He smirks
“I swear you‘re just like those punk ass teenagers! The pain in the ass ones” I laugh
“What? It’s just for practice you know, I don’t wanna mess it up when the time comes” He kisses my neck
“How could you mess it up? You’ve made two already” I softly moaned
“Still...I don’t wanna miss my shot” He says as he pushes my jeans down my legs
......................................................
*FOUR MONTHS LATER*
“Cherry? Where are you babe? And where are my little manics? This house is too quiet for my liking” Jon yells as he searched us through the house.
*Finding me in 3, 2, 1* I thought
“Hey kitten, where’s my welcome home crew?” He opened the door to our bedroom “Why are you on the bed? Are you feeling alright? Did something happened?” He runs towards the bed, sitting down by my side
“The kids are at Nancy’s because I need to talk to you”
“Uh Oh, those are the six words nobody wants to hear it. Did I do something wrong?” He asks, slightly scared
“Yes you did, Jonathan” I try to hide my amusement
“What did I do?” He faintly asked
“You impregnated me, you fucker!” I laugh as I throw the pregnancy test at his chest
“Impregnated? What do you-“ He looks down to his lap, to the pregnancy test “Holy shit!” He laughs “You’re pregnant?” Jon looks at me for confirmation and I just nod
“YES!!!! MY KITTEN IS PREGNANT!!! I CAN’T BELIEVE IT” Jon screams in excitement
“How far long are you?”
“15 weeks, according to the doctor”
“That’s the best news I’ve ever had since Rosie!” He smiles widely as his hand caresses my belly “Hello there baby, daddy loves you so much!” He whispered to my bellybutton “I can’t wait to meet you! Come out now, so you can meet mommy and your siblings Rosie and Atticus” He nuzzles his nose on my belly
“You know there’s still like, 7 more months until you meet her right?” I chuckled
“Her?” His head shot up
“Yep, apparently she wanted to make her debut already letting us know that she is a girl!”
“Another little princess. I’m cursed to be surrounded by beautiful and strong women” He jokes
“Yeah you are” I laugh as I let my fingers comb through his hair
“Do you think I should give her one of my Mox t-shirts so she can wear it?” He sincerely asks
“Now?” I laugh
“Yeah! I need more beautiful girls in team Moxley” He teases
“You’re the worst!” I giggled
As he engaged a very serious conversation with his future princess about the ‘no other prince but daddy’ rule.
If you feel comfortable with it, please let me know your thoughts? Feedbacks are always so appreciated 🥰😘

[“In fact, the Carolinians proved resistant to religion and reform. As Byrd noted, the men had an abiding “aversion” to labor of any kind. They slept (and snored) through most of the morning. On waking, they sat smoking their pipes. Rarely did they even peek outside their doors, and during the cooler months, those who did quickly returned “shivering to their chimney corners.” In milder weather they got as far as thinking about plunging a hoe into the ground. But thinking turned to excuses, and nothing was accomplished. The unmotivated Carolina folk preferred, he said, to “loiter away their lives, like Solomon’s sluggards.” The little work that actually got done was performed by the female poor.
Carolina obliged William Byrd to adjust his broader vision of America’s destiny. For his example of the “wretchedest scenes of poverty” he had ever seen in “this happy part of the world,” he isolated a rusticated man named Cornelius Keith, who had a wife and six children yet lived in a home without a roof. The Keiths’ dwelling was closer to a cattle pen, he said, than to any human habitation. At night the family slept in the fodder stack. Byrd found it especially odd that the husband and father was more interested in protecting feed for his animals than the safety of his family. Keith had chosen this life, and that was what most shocked the wealthy explorer from Virginia. Here was a man with a skilled trade, possessing good land and good limbs, who nevertheless preferred to live worse than the “bogtrotting Irish.” Byrd’s choice of words was, as usual, unambiguous. English contempt for the Irish was nothing new, but “bogtrotting” was an exquisite synonym for swamp vagrant.
When Byrd identified the Carolinians as residents of “Lubberland,” he drew upon a familiar English folktale that featured one “Lawrence Lazy,” born in the county of Sloth near the town of Neverwork. Lawrence was a “heavy lump” who sat in his chimney corner and dreamt. His dog was so lazy that he “lied his head agin the wall to bark.” In Lubberland, sloth was contagious, and Lawrence had the power to put all masters under his spell so that they fell into a deep slumber. As applied to the rural poor who closed themselves off to the world around them, the metaphor of sleep suggested popular resistance to colonial rule. Byrd found the people he encountered in Carolina to be resistant to all forms of government: “Everyone does what seems best in his own eyes.”
As he further contemplated the source of idleness, Byrd was convinced that it was in the lubbers’ blood. Living near the swamp, they suffered from “distempers of laziness,” which made them “slothful in everything but getting children.” They displayed a “cadaverous complexion” and a “lazy, creeping habit.” The combination of climate and an unhealthy diet doomed them. Eating swine, they contracted the “yaws,” and their symptoms matched those of syphilis: they lost their noses and palates, and had hideously deformed faces. With their “flat noses,” they not only looked like but also began to act like wild boars: “Many of them seem to grunt rather than speak.” In a “porcivorous” country, people spent their days foraging and fornicating; when upset, they could be heard yelling out, “Flesh alive and tear it.” It was their “favorite exclamation,” Byrd said. This bizarre colloquialism suggested cannibalism, or perhaps hyenas surrounding a fresh kill and devouring it. How could these carnivorous swamp monsters be thought of as English?
Byrd left behind few practical ideas for reforming the godforsaken wilderness he had explored. Only drastic measures would work: replacing lubbers with Swiss German settlers and draining the swamp of its vile murky waters. He mused that colonization would have had a better outcome if male settlers had been encouraged to intermarry with Indian women. Over two generations, the Indian stock would have improved, as a species of flower or tree might; dark skin blanched white, heathen ways dimmed.”]

a ranking of all the nancy drew games i’ve played during quarantine so far
i’ve owned a big batch of these games for years (steam had a sale on them a long time ago and i snatched them up, but i hadn’t bothered to use bootcamp nor did i have a pc for the longest time). and then came 2020, so i started marathoning these little bastards. some have been amazing. some have been....so fucking bad. here they all are, according to me. i didn’t want to rate them out of 10 or 100 or whatever, because i’m drawn to each one for such bizarre and often arbitrary reasons, so i divided them up into “ouch” “okay” “good” and “favorites,” with a bonus section including the games i haven’t played yet, for whatever reason. enjoy
OUCH
Ransom of the Seven Ships - i….did not hate ransom? there are a lot of things about it that infuriate me: the lack of suspects, the entire existence of johnny rolle/john poole/oh you know and his role in the story, george’s inability to fix that fucking phone, nancy’s total lack of concern for bess’s safety, those goddamn monkeys, etc. but despite of these things i have a weird fondness for, say, diving for treasure at the old shipwreck, and swimming around in blue hole, and driving around the island and crashing into shit. i think the music is fun and atmospheric and i dunno, i played it during early april when everything was still gray and cold, so seeing the sun and the beach was like YES…....YES!!! which may have clouded my judgment. but my personal feelings don’t really matter here; i can’t in good conscience give this one a good rating just for the fact that our single suspect wears fucking BLACKFACE for a third of the game. HER was right to discontinue it.
The Creature of Kapu Cave - i tried to play this one immediately after finishing SAW, which was a HUGE mistake. i think i got to malachi’s lab and got bored and then fucked off for about five months? then i opened the game back up on a whim just a little while ago, saw where i was stuck, decided to just start over, and beat it in one sitting. the setting and plot for this one was GREAT, in theory. and that, i think, is the main problem with kapu cave: it had a good concept but it was halfassed and rushed and didn’t really deliver on anything it had promised. i was so excited to play a game set in hawaii! what were they going to do with it, i wondered?? but the lore and mythology was barely there, the hardy boys just sat around fishing and delivering shave ice, and big island mike made me feel…violent. i kind of stan quigley though. collecting frass was weirdly fun. and the endgame puzzle was HILARIOUSLY bad to the point where i almost consider it avant garde.
OKAY GAMES
Alibi in Ashes - the number one thing that draws me to a nancy drew game is the setting and atmosphere, and this one just DID NOT do it for me. i totally get the appeal some folks might have: the whole “innocuous suburban town holds dark underbelly of backstabbing and secrets” thing is, i’ll admit, a perfectly cromulent concept. but goddamn it, switching characters was a pain in the ass; the fact that we had to transfer important items from one inventory to the other was a pain in the ass; talking to suspects as every single different playable character was a pain in the ass. i think if you’re going to go the multiple characters route you should at least give them somewhat distinct personalities and skillsets lol. and i get that they tried to do that a bit, with certain characters being able to get more out of certain suspects, but oh my god it was tedious. also: that fucking door puzzle at the end. actually, all the puzzles in this one felt rather badly-integrated to me. i YEARN for the days of dusting for fingerprints on alarm system keypads. the highlight of this game for me was having each of the characters drive to the cemetery and listening to them give a little sob before getting back into their cars. impeccable attention to detail.
Ghost of Thornton Hall - UGH. i really wanted to like this one!!! it had everything going for it, too. i mean, crumbling southern gothic mansions! messy family histories full of secrets and lies! grappling with the fraught topic of american slavery and the implications of its legacy!! thornton hall has everything i love, and yet i was so disappointed. even worse, this game started off so strong. savannah’s story about the willow tree had me completely captivated. the vibe of the house and the grounds were just right. this thing hit the ground SPRINTING and then it all just sort of fell apart for me. i didn’t connect with any of the characters. clara came the closest to being interesting to me, but we never really got to delve into her past until the very end, and even then there were so many questions left unanswered. i feel like the writers were like, “okay how do we make this ~~~~~scary~~~~~?” and then wrenched the characters around in these insane directions in order to pull it off. charlotte was supposed to be this kind, well-liked character, except that apparently she hung out in the crypts and put trinkets in all her ancestors’ coffins (HUH??!!) just so that the writers could fit in that sweet sweet shock factor of having the player opening up coffins later in the game. same with jessalyn, to a lesser extent: clara claims jessalyn would never put everyone through this whole kidnapping ordeal, and yet that’s exactly what jessalyn was doing the whole game. i suppose this is the theme of “perfect girls turn out to be not so perfect once they go missing/die” but it just comes off as lazy and inconsistent. harper didn’t enchant me, even though i was expecting her to. i feel like the writers just left it at “she’s craaaaazy!!” in order to justify having weird shit happen in the game. like, yep, that weird thing was harper’s doing. why’d she do it? she’s fucking crazy, that’s why. charlotte popped up so often that i just wanted her to move out of the fucking way so i could click the forward arrow and get on with the game. i felt that the puzzles were badly integrated into the gameplay; there was NOTHING in charlotte’s character (or at least the way she was described by others, i guess there was one throwaway line in her journal) that would indicate that she’d be paranoid enough to leave a trail of puzzles for future characters to find. i had a lot more to say about this one, and if anyone wants the full post, i will absolutely make it, but suffice it to say that it is FAR better to create a tense atmosphere through fear of the Unknown than to repeatedly hit the player over the head with a short charlotte cutscene saying “scary!!! scary!!! this game is scary!!!”
The Haunting of Castle Malloy - a HOT MESS of a game, saved (for me anyway) by the atmosphere and especially the music. stepping into the great hall of castle malloy gave me chills the first time i did it, and i think i was so excited to finally have a game set in ireland that i duly ignored its many faults. in retrospect, if i were to make a game set in ireland, it certainly wouldn’t be this. i’m willing to forgive the jetpack thing because it’s so fucking absurd that it might as well happen, but i’m less forgiving towards the ogham runes puzzle in particular. man, fuck that thing!! kyler has the charisma of a damp piece of paper, and the fact that donal’s main personality trait was his obsession with fairies (donal, the only actual irish character in the game, i might add!) was a bit…tone deaf. i enjoyed mixing “fruit juices,” and exploring what was left of the castle was fun (and also a clever way of avoiding creating massive set-pieces for nancy to explore), but of all the paths the plot could have taken, i so, so wish they hadn’t made brendan malloy ambiguously a nazi. hello?????!!!
GOOD GAMES
Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake - not unmemorable, per se (there were some great moments: that sphincter-tightening opening scene, discovering the untouched speakeasy for the first time, finding paw prints on mickey malone’s crypt), but not my favorite game. i think the setting is mainly to blame for this: it’s close enough to where i grew up that i spent more time critiquing the ecology than becoming invested in the mystery at hand (western tanagers in pennyslvania?? really????). it also felt a little too mundane for me: jeff akers’ old ranger station and emily’s ugly little country store are basically places that i know and frequent, and part of the appeal of these games (at least for me) is to get to explore castles and mansions and faraway places and that sort of thing, you know, places you don’t get to see every day. points for accuracy, though! i really can’t hate this one, when all is said and done, if only for the fact that you can die by falling through rotten floorboards while trying to read a note warning you that the floorboards are rotten. amazing.
Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon - oh my god, fatima is so fucking weird!! i actually don’t have much to say about this one? it was a perfectly solid game with lots of fun little moments, but for me it falls into the abyss of nd games that i didn’t hate but didn’t really love either. the culprit kind of came out of nowhere and i didn’t particularly love any of the characters (except for the crypt-keeper in copper gorge), though camille and jake’s romance was definitely on par with frances and dirk’s. the mine cart ride was fun, but the highlight of the game for me was hanging out in the diner as frank and piling jalapeños on my chef’s choice burger. i’d replay the game just for that. i like that nancy won’t pick up the gem with tino there, in case he thinks we’re doing something suspicious, but we can go right behind his desk and pick up a handful of carbide as if that’s a normal thing to do. i loved playing leaping lizards. to this day i do not understand the slugs puzzle and have always just done it by guessing. where is the bathroom on this train??
Warnings at Waverly Academy - an infuriating game that i love. i went to a hoity-toity historically women’s college and the layout and design of waverly was UNCANNILY close to the real thing, even down to the upholstery on the cheap lounge furniture in the rec room!!! i think the first thing i did in this game was try to climb the tree in broad daylight and immediately get expelled. i have to give a shoutout to rachel hubbard for writing us a note before we’ve even MET her asking us to do her homework, despite the fact that she’s got a whole other twin to help her do it as well (a fact which nancy willfully ignores by the end of the game - get that education bro! hell yeah!). izzy was delightfully bitchy, and playing darts with leela just to get another scrap of case-related information was like putting staples through my forehead. corine’s desperate attempts to come off as effortlessly likable were just that bit too real (yet another uncanny resemblance to waverly’s real life equivalents). the whole blackwood society/hidden treasure thing was completely superfluous and unnecessary: wasn’t the valedictorian race motive enough for sabotage and attempted murder? i love that nancy forgets how to play piano in this one and that you can’t solve that one puzzle until she reads a book and re-learns it.
The Final Scene - impeccable atmosphere, but somehow lacking in some unidentifiable department. maybe it was just too short? i also felt like (as i feel in many of these older games) that i wanted just a BIT more out of the characters, because they’re often so interesting, yet our dialogue options are so limited. i unironically am nick falcone, and i guess brady was…there? i especially wish i could have talked to simone more (“someone’s just climbed out of my wardrobe,” iconic line). i really, really loved the palpable urgency pulsing through every action in the game (actually, maybe that’s why it felt so short?), and nancy’s genuine, desperate concern for maya - where was that energy when bess got kidnapped? lol? i also wanted a little bit more from the harry houdini aspect of the plot; it seemed like we didn’t really get to do much “magic” other than those foot elevators and the flash paper at the end (which i accidentally activated the instant the culprit walked into the frame, so i missed their entire final speech, OOPS). points for the setting (i LOVE old dilapidated buildings) and especially for the music. this might have the best and most cohesive soundtrack of any nancy drew game - that maya motif that shows up in the “danger” track!! impeccable!!
The Secret of Shadow Ranch - i didn’t play this one as a kid, so i didn’t have that moment of “hehe fun horse game WHOA THERE’S A TRAGIC LOVE STORY IN HERE” while revisiting it as an adult. frances humber and dirk valentine’s ill-fated romance was a nice little cherry on top of a perfectly executed game (if this were an objective ranking it’d definitely be in the S tier, but it’s not one of my personal favorites so it’s down here), though i was a little tired at this point in my marathon of nancy doing all the work and thus leading the culprit right to the treasure at the end. on the other hand, i absolutely LOVED the soundtrack and the setting in this one. i do not love horses, and yet riding bob was a real treat, somehow. the vegetable-picking sound effects were intensely satisfying, and collecting eggs was oddly fun. i think my favorite character had to be tex because he just scared the absolute shit out of me every time i had to talk to him, yet he’s such a simp for mazz yazz. keep it up legend. HE’S the one you should be using as your phone wallpaper in SAW, nancy.
MY FAVORITE GAMES
Legend of the Crystal Skull - the worst of my favorite games from an objective standpoint, but i LOVE this one. the plot is a total mess: nancy gets knocked out by some skeleton man breaking and entering in this dead guy’s house, and instead of investigating properly, she wanders around the house collecting glass eyeballs, and solving puzzles, presumably hoping that it’ll all make sense at the end. which it does, kind of. also bess is here too, and lamont’s shop is INSANELY fun to wander around in. i could do without dr. buford’s flirting (isn’t he literally like 95 years old?), but motherfucking henry goddamn bolet is in this one and he makes everything okay. the vibes in this one are impeccable. i love nancy’s silhouetted figure click-clacking through the maze of graveyards in her heels and dress; i love renee’s scary ass room and her pile of koko kringles; i love henry’s strained trying-to-be-polite demeanor and his increasing desperation as his toxic relationship falls apart before his eyes. (dump her, henry!!!) and the music in this one??? incredible. also shoutout to that…thing in the glass tank in lamont’s shop. what the fuck even was that.
Treasure in the Royal Tower - this might be the perfect game? it’s not my favorite (i wish it was a little longer, and that we could interact with the characters more), but i loved every minute of it. the castle feels so real, has that perfect blend of grandeur and somberness that HER has rarely captured since. everything in this game, from the sound and look of the ancient elevator to ezra’s insect collection to nancy’s broken radiator, feel so well-placed and atmospheric. i love that nancy gradually becomes dexter’s ally; i love “achilles security systems,” i love that lisa’s fake IDs are set to expire on february 30th. the only thing that drags the game down for me is its navigation system. it takes approximately 5 business days to figure out where to click on the screen in order to progress down the hall, but once you get used to that, it’s not as awful. unfortunately by the time you’re used to it the game ends. lol. but anyway on a positive note (because this game is full of almost nothing but positives) there’s something liminal and almost magical about setting the alarm for 3 am and sneaking down to the lobby to rendezvous with hotchkiss. none of the other games have that particular ~vibe~. ugh. muah
Secret of the Scarlet Hand - i just have an insane amount of fondness for this game. the setting and the lore are so rich and even on multiple replays i’m still finding new dialogue trees to get lost in, which is lucky because i love all the characters so much. yes, even you, sinclair! this one was kind of a sleeper hit for me; it took me a few months to finish because i kept not having time for it, but once i was done, i looked back on the whole ordeal and was absolutely amazed at the journey i had just taken. for whatever reason i love trivia-rich games, so walking around the museum picking up random bits of information was just plain fun for me. and i also loved the setting - not just the museum itself but the time period. everything about this game screams early 2000s, from nancy’s ancient laptop to the 100mb zip drives to the beige phones and even joanna’s outfit. i’m a sucker for that shit!! but more importantly i’m a sucker for henrik van der hune and all his bizarreness. i love that he commits the actual crime than nancy is investigating (even if it is for supposedly noble purposes) and then gets off without even a second of jail time in the end. and what an iconic ending. that slam poetry bullshit haunts my every waking moment
Shadow at the Water's Edge - the only true horror game in the series, and i applaud the shit out of HER for it. this is, to date, the only nancy drew game that has gotten an actual terrified scream out of me (you all know the scene!). the atmosphere of this one is TERRIFIC. it’s so heavy and melancholy. you can just feel that something awful happened in these baths, and that all the characters are slowly suffocating under the oppressive weight of the tragedy. this is one of the only games in the series where i actually get nervous about moving through the ryokan for fear of seeing…things. but the ryokan is also beautiful, and pristine, and even the terrible accents can’t stop me from enjoying takae’s story about the sparrow or yumi’s penchant for sewing. i don’t even mind the huge sudoku and nonogram puzzles; i find them oddly calming. i love that you have to figure out how to navigate the subway before you can go anywhere (realism!), and i’ve spent more time than i’d like to admit playing pachinko in order to win all of the cute little prizes. i want to live in yumi’s apartment and the little phone dress up games are a fun distraction from all the pants-shittingly terrifying moments at the ryokan. ugh, i love this game.
Curse of Blackmoor Manor - the ultimate. the big daddy. the king of the hill. this is absolutely my nostalgia talking, but come on. this game has everything!! here’s a story. i’m ten years old, and my mother brings home this “nancy drew: curse of blackmoor manor (dvd game)” for me to try out. it sits in a cabinet for a while, because right now zoo tycoon two is my shit and i’m not about to give that up. i think i must have been in middle school when i finally first attempted it. the dvd game, mind you!! i sat my ass down in front of the tv and gradually worked my way through about 1/16th of the game before giving up because i just couldn’t figure out what the point was. (i was kind of dumb.) i was oddly drawn to the setting, though, and i thought about it from time to time. fast forward to high school. my sister and i sit down to try it out (why not??) and we actually start SOLVING things. the astrology puzzle? cracked. brigitte’s box? slam dunked that motherfucker. the whoop bla-ding bang bang stairs? got em. i was scribbling down notes like a fucking fiend. i felt like a total badass. i was CRACKING THE CASE, guys. it was this first fervent foray into the world of puzzle-solving that really flicked the switch on for me. i was a changed person. oh and when we realized that linda was turning into a FUCKING WEREWOLF???? minds blown. this game had a PLOT. something was going ON. i cannot possibly convey how wild it was to me, age 16 or so, to have had this game for years and to have ONLY JUST realized how goddamn cool it was!!! anyway we ended up solving it over the course of a weekend, and it became something of an in-joke in the household, complaining about jane’s puzzles and those fucking glowsticks, the moving rooms and that frog game that was completely up to chance. then i finally got the computer version when steam had a sale (years ago now) and my eyes were opened once again. so THIS is what the game is supposed to be like. the navigation is so clean!! the puzzles are even harder than i remember! i love the rich backstory of the penvellyn family, the weirdness of the puzzles, the fact that fucking oliver cromwell is in this game, sort of. i have an entire blackmoor manor blog AND i’m working my way through a penvellyn-themed bullet journal, yall. i love this game so much lol.
NO INTEREST
Secrets Can Kill - not even the remake could save this one. i just don’t care
The Silent Spy - i hate this premise. i cannot get behind it. i hate when these games have nancy do ~~~~super secret spy shit~~~~ when it’s really just an excuse to insert tedious puzzles into the plot and have nancy do other people’s chores. like she already does that, there’s no need to pretend it’s cool
The Shattered Medallion - i’m kind of tempted to play this one just to see how bad it is. but also i don’t want to waste my time
Labyrinth of Lies - from everything i’ve read, it sounds like i will hate it
Midnight in Salem - uhhhhhh
Danger by Design - maybe it’s good but i don’t care enough to find out
The Phantom of Venice - again i hate these stupid ass spy plots and venice doesn’t have sewers. idk maybe i’ll give it a try someday.
TO PLAY
The White Wolf of Icicle Creek - i just started this one, having the time in the top right corner gives me anxiety
Danger on Deception Island - i hope this one is good. i really want to enjoy it
The Captive Curse - my sister said this one is good?
Stay Tuned for Danger - this one looks like a classic lol. i have a soft spot for the early games
Message in a Haunted Mansion - another classic, it’s on my list
MAYBE
Trail of the Twister - the setting doesn’t inspire me but maybe the characters will?
Tomb of the Lost Queen - perhaps altho i’ve heard hotchkiss overstays her welcome in this one
The Deadly Device - i don’t feel like playing this one at the moment but maybe someday i will actually do it and find that i love it
Sea of Darkness - the setting looks really nice so maybe i will enjoy it
Secret of the Old Clock - maybe i will find this one oddly charming???
The Haunted Carousel - i played this as a kid (it was the only pc game from the series i owned, i played the rest at my friends’ houses lol) and i have like…zero memories of it. i think it was really short. nancy got stuck on roller coaster tracks? and the ending came out of nowhere. maybe i’ll try it again, idk.

hello!! so ive been following u for a while now (since 2014 or earlier i think? i have vague memories of danny phantom merfic) and ur the only person i follow who posts about nancy drew so i Have to ask bc my curiosity keeps piquing over the years. i love puzzle/detective games, where do u think i should start if i wanted to get into the nancy drew games? :]
80 Hello! What a juicy ask to answer over my morning coffee >)
I have answered a couple asks/posts over the years about starting the games:
This one as well as this ask can be quick places to start <3
I also highly recommend this post made by Nancy-Drew-Designs that I just rebagled. I love the way they've organized the games into this chart, it's very reliable, even when taking int account that each game's difficulty can be suggestive. It might be easier to use this when you've got a few games below your belt, though! None of the above posts contain spoilers <3 (None of the below do either!)
This gets VERY long and rambly here, and I don't even mention all the games >>; Sorry!
So TBH my tastes/suggestions haven't changed much in the 4 years since I was asked which games were the 'best.' I will still stick by Ghost of Thorton Hall, Shadow at the Water's Edge, Final Scene. I will also toss Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake, The Haunted Carousel, or Message in a Haunted Mansion into the ring. ...Charlie loves spooky stuff, can you tell XD DOG, CAR, and MHM are all older games, and despite their age they have stood up to time pretty well.
MHM is a shorter game but riddled with spooks and creeps around every corner. There's a particular scare on the foyer staircase that chills me to this day. Play this in the dark with headphones on!
DOG was baby Charlie's first game and so it will always be one of my reccs. It's got ghost puppos, spooky woods, cemeteries, and talks of old gangsters in the roaring 20's! What's not to love!
CAR is another shortish game, with somewhat simple puzzles. I love theme parks too, I grew up with my folks working the town carnival. There's something about an empty theme park that soothes/relaxes me, but I think it's liminal space for a lotta people. I also like it's secondary plot/message about grieving and loss, and it's one of my most replayed games simply for the gentleness of it. The music is just haunting, too~
The nice thing about ND games is there is, literally, something for everyone! And they, most of them anyway, maintain their theme's integrity or showcase good, honest research to whatever their niche subject is. Some games you have to suspend disbelief more than others, for example Secret of the Scarlet Hand is NOT osha safe, and that's all I'll say about that. (But omg, is it a cool as fuck game, and they did their due diligence with Mayan culture, even made baby!Charlie stop and question why it was okay for museums to just...take from other cultures even in the name of learning and preservation. Like, good for them, my mom loved that sm.)
If you love orcas or the ocean, or perhaps have fond memories of East Coast livin', you'd enjoy Danger on Deception Island, or maybe you'd like to head to the tropics, in which case, Creature of Kapu Cave might be a fun one.
The Legend of the Crystal Skull has lots of perils and unease, and since it's rooted in New Orleans that's no surprise.
If you like horses, or old western romances, perhaps the Secret at Shadow Ranch will tempt you first!
You also can't go wrong with The Secret of the Old Clock, which is a cute lil rewind and lovingly recreates the first Nancy Drew book while still keeping itself fresh and unique. Plus hey, mini golf!
And if you were an Ancient Egypt kid, like so many of us were, then Secret of the Lost Tomb will be right up your alley~
And of course, if you want to literally start from the ground up, simply check the wiki, and you can play them in order <3 (Though I will suggest playing the Remastered Secrets Can Kill in place of game 1. XD It's a lil more fleshed out, more polished etc.)
The newer games, in my opinion, are sort of where things start to...fall apart. I have played The Silent Spy, Labyrinth of Lies and didn't like them. I played Sea of Darkness and did enjoy it but...well, let's put put this way:
I've played those newer games past GTH once. More out of desperation and loyalty for the old studio, frankly. They are not high on my list of recommendations, but perhaps you will play them and find something more to love than I did, Anon.
I've replayed most of the above recommendations since 2002, almost ad nausea, all different levels. Some of my best memories are playing them over with my friends, watching the game new through their eyes. I've converted a few who snubbed point and clicks into ND addicts, having had them tell me, "well these games are different. Even the campy, old ones--they just are."
Now, quickly, difficulty can be relative. I personally think some of the 'harder' games are easier and vice versa, but the games thankfully all come with Amateur and Master Sleuth modes.
There really isn't a wrong answer, to be honest. (Except Midnight in Salem. Please don't start with that one.)
Certainly go with your gut, and dig into titles that pique your interest beyond the ones I've mentioned. And of course, come back and tell me what you think!

From @lightveils on Twitter (free to use wherever!). I’ve been meaning to do this for a while. I definitely have enough fics to fill it lol~

A Fic You Love Without Knowing The Source Material:
I was born for this by esama (Assassin’s Creed | Altair x Desmond | M)
Juno did her best to lead him to her preferred fate, but the end is coming and Desmond has doubts.
A Fic With A Premise That Shouldn’t Work But Does:
Proposing To Strangers by moonstalker24 (Teen Wolf | Peter x Stiles | G)
At the end of a strained relationship, crime novelist Stiles chooses to hide from the world inside a bar with far too many motorcycles outside it for comfort. Here he'll meet the man of his dreams, eat food and propose marriage, all within the first five minutes.
Peter doesn't know who this kid is, but he's cute and looks like he could use a break. So he feeds him. He's not expecting a marriage proposal, but with what comes after, he doesn't really mind.
A Fic You’ve Reread Several Times:
Hooverville by twothumbsandnostakeincanon (Teen Wolf | Peter x Stiles | E)
Town to town, train to train, tent to tent.
By 1932, the dust had begun to blow and the jobs were gone.
Anonymity was a byproduct of looking for work, which made it both necessary and convenient.
Stiles had enough secrets of his own to know to look the other way when he saw something that shouldn’t be possible.
The ghost of a tail giving enough balance to disembark a moving train.
Near silent Latin whispered on the edge of a tent encampment.
A flash of burning eyes.
He had more than enough to worry about without adding the oddities of others, and besides- having unusually sharp teeth certainly didn’t make a man worse than the ones running from the wife and kids they couldn’t feed.
So Stiles kept his observations to himself. He kept his everything to himself.
Until he met a man. One with eyes so blue they seemed to glow- and then they did.
Stiles tried to look away, but for the first time he was stopped.
“Don’t be like that sweetheart. Aren’t you curious?”
A Fic You Still Remember Many Years Later:
All True-Hearted Souls by mardia (Temeraire | Laurence x Granby | G)
“For God's sake, if someone doesn't talk Laurence out of these constant heroics, I wouldn't bet a farthing on his chances; no, and not ours either.” Four times that John Granby helped save William Laurence's life. Laurence/Granby. Spoilers up to Empire of Ivory.
A Comfort Fic:
Nothing Improper by Bunnywest (Teen Wolf | Peter x Stiles | G)
“How long since someone touched you, sweet boy?” Peter asks, his voice barely a breath in Stiles’ ear. “Days? Weeks? Months?” Stiles nods imperceptibly at that last one.
“After…after everything, after Allison,” is all Stiles manages to get out.
A Cathartic Fic:
Swing by ShippersList (Teen Wolf | Peter x Stiles | T)
Stiles wants to fly.
A Fic You’d Print And Put On Your Bookshelf:
Nose to the Wind by Batsutousai (HP | Tom x Harry | M)
While Harry had been content with his second chance, that didn't keep him from thinking what he could have done different, how many people could have survived if he hadn't been set on the very specific path he'd walked. Third time is the charm, though, right?
A Fic You Associate With A Song (x2):
Strange Duet by BelleAmante, thiliart (thilia) (Teen Wolf | Peter x Stiles | M)
The past three years have been a series of shocking, or not so shocking, successes for 2018 Tony award winner and two time Grammy nominee, Stiles Stilinski. You don’t typically find classically trained opera singers singing alternative folk rock to crowds at Coachella. Nor do you find indie singer/songwriters winning best actor awards at the Tony’s for their Broadway debuts. Stilinski has made it his lifetime habit to defy and exceed all expectations.
-or-
A Steter fic loosely based on Phantom of the Opera
~
Full Circle by Nike Femme (FMA | Roy x Ed | T)

Me and Mine by linndechir (Fast and the Furious | Deckard x Owen | E)
The last time they'd spoken, Deckard had told Owen that he was tired of cleaning up his messes. But the first thing he did after breaking out of prison was to take Owen to the other end of the world so they could lick their wounds and start planning their revenge.
A Fic You Wish Could Be A Movie:
Moving In (To Every Single Aspect of Danny’s Life, Including the Boring Bits like Dry-Cleaning) by westgirl (Hawaii Five-0 | Steve x Danny | T)
It felt wrong for Steve to sound unsure of his place in Danny’s life. His place in Danny’s life was at Danny’s side, driving him slowly insane. Steve should feel secure about that.
A Fic That Led To You Making Friends With The Author:
Begin and End by Rikkamaru (Log Horizon x HP | G)
This is how it begins: a boy rejected by his family, a boy reunited with his brother by his sister-in-law's intervention. A boy who found a family in an online game. But how will it end?
FREE SPACE:
Reverti Ad Praeteritum by Batsutousai (Fullmetal Alchemist | Roy x Edward | M)

A Fic You’ve Gushed About IRL:
Designation: Miracle by umisabaku (Kuroko no Basket | M)
It's been three years since seven human experiments, called "Miracles," escaped Teiko Industries, alerting the world to the presence of super-powered children. A Fic You Associate With A Place (have to self-rec for this one):
Safe Harbour by cywscross (Teen Wolf | Peter x Stiles x Chris | T)
Peter didn't think he'd find a home here. He certainly didn't think he'd find a home with two other men.
Chris and Stiles prove him wrong.
A Fic That Made You Gasp Out Loud (kind of? it was suspenseful):
Sanctuary by DiscontentedWinter (Teen Wolf | Peter x Stiles | E)
The Hale Wolf Sanctuary isn’t just for wolves.
It turns out it’s for Stilinskis as well.
A Fic You Found At The Right Time:
slow increments by Areiton (Teen Wolf | Peter x Stiles)
Peter is enigmatic, egotistical, sometimes barely sane. He's sharp and cutting and takes more time to care for the pack than anyone. And sometimes, John catches him watching Stiles.
A Fic That You Would Read Fic Of:
if you try to break me, you will bleed by Dialux (Game of Thrones | Jon x Sansa | T)
It had been a slash across her chest from a White Walker’s sword that finally ended her life. Sansa’d landed in a puddle of her own blood, and she’d died quickly, quietly.
And then she’d awoken with a gasp, trembling, in a bed that had burned under Theon’s betrayal.
A Fic That Made You Laugh Out Loud:
The Path towards Unwilling Godhood by Sky_King (Bleach | Kisuke x Ichigo | G)
Ichigo has never had the most normal life, and this latest chapter of it is no different.
"I'm not a god!"
A Fic With A Line (Or Two) That You’ve Memorized By Heart:
Atlas by distractedKat (Star Trek | Spock x Jim | T)
Between what was and what will be stands James Tiberius Kirk, in all his fractured patchwork glory. Because saving the Federation was only the beginning.
A Fic That Gave You Butterflies:
The Rest of Our Lives by mia6363 (Teen Wolf | Peter x Stiles | T)
“I don’t know, as a kid I watched a lot of movies, you know? And at first I figured like… I’d be on some great adventure that would take me away from it all, you know? Like Indiana Jones comes around and is all, ‘Hey Stiles, buddy, come with me we’ve got to go save the world.’ Then… you and… everything happened… then I just… I figured I’d die before I was eighteen.”
A Fic That Embodies Something You Value In Life:
The Boy Sleuth by Shey (Teen Wolf | Peter x Stiles | T)
Stiles is eight when he discovers a box of his mom’s old Nancy Drew Mysteries in the back of the guest bedroom closet.
A Favourite AU:
Love What is Behind You by KouriArashi (Teen Wolf | Peter x Stiles | M)
Basically what it says on the label. Hunger Games type fusion. Stiles doing way better than anyone anticipates. Peter finds him intriguing. Ruthless, devious assholes working together to ruin bad guys, as the Steter ship is meant to be.
A Fic You Stayed Up Too Late To Finish Reading:
Of Dwobbits, Dragons and Dwarves by ISeeFire (The Hobbit | Fem!Bilbo x Fili | T)
Bilba has been a slave her entire life. All she knows of the outside world is what she sees from time to time outside the gates of Moria and the stories her mother used to tell her. Stories of a place called the Shire where her mother once lived and a placed called Erebor where, as far as she knows, her father still lives. Stories of dragons a thousand times larger, and more intelligent, than the beasts the orcs rode and of a strange concept called freedom where one was allowed to live as they wished with no one to tell them what they could, or could not do.
The stories meant little to Bilba. The only future she had was to live, and die, as a slave as countless number had before her.
And then the orcs dragged an injured female firedrake through the gates, her rider screaming obscenities behind her as he fought to reach her side...and everything changed.
A Fic That Made You Feel Seen (another self-rec lol):
i am addicted to death (so remind me what it’s like to live) by cywscross (Teen Wolf | Peter x Stiles | T)
Stiles is sixteen years old. He has already died seventy-eight times.

Isabella Aldwyn
Tumblr media
Skeleton: The Hoyden  Name: Isabella Rose Aldwyn  Age: 24 Family Title: Viscounty Cheltenham  About: See Below FC: Caitlin Stasey
O1 ━◞ ISABELLA
Being the eldest of the female Aldwyns was always a curse for Bella, specifically because of her personality. Headstrong, independent and stubborn, if you told her to go left, she would go right without a moment’s hesitation. And when she did so, she’d speak with such a sweet and charming tongue abreast mirthful giggles that you’d always sigh in defeat because you simply can’t turn down that look of sheer joy. Known among the household to be as unruly as a wild stallion yet to be broken in, many of the house staff and family members who must manage her affairs are often chasing after her, her body racing as quickly as her mind (and attention span). Upon hearing such comments, Bella wholeheartedly agrees that she proudly has the spirit of a stallion, wild-hearted, adventurous and happy to indulge in what freedom she can taste. She believes very strongly in making her own decisions and following her own path, an opposite sentiment to what she’s been taught all her life and she struggles constantly with the tension of what she selfishly wants and what’s expected of her.
Bella wears her heart on her sleeve, unashamedly expressing her highest highs and lowest lows.  Neither does she shy away from confrontation. Especially when displeased or when facing conflict, she will say it as it is, no matter how hard she tries to keep her mouth shut. Her loose tongue has gotten her into deep trouble more than she’d like to admit.
While impulsive, Bella also lacks any sense of self-preservation. At her best, it means she will go above and beyond (perhaps even at her own expense) to those she loves and are loyal to. At her worst, Bella wouldn’t realize she’s in danger if she was looking at a wolf six feet away. (To be quite honest, she’d possibly try and attempt to tame it.)  As such, her schemes and fun often get away from her and put her in arguably dire circumstances.
The world outside her tiny universe in the Aldwyn estate always drew bella to it like a moth to a flame. It took time and numerous failed attempts to learn how to sneak out of the house; from taking advantage of the servant exits, to bribing the footmen, to convincing her maid Nancy to accompany her. When she managed to escape from her governess, Bella would explore Cheltenham (or London depending on the season) and became acquainted with as many of the townspeople and the common folk as she could. At times, her brother, Harry, would sneak out from his studies to accompany her. Other times, she would visit her cousin, Simeon, and wrangle his arm to convince him to take her around.
O2 ━◞ FAMILY
Teresa di Santa Maria del Ponte, the fiery ninth daughter of a Marquis in one of the Papal states in Rome, had not intended to marry an English man. But when Philip Aldwyn visited Italia for business and he met the saucy girl, it is as they say -- it was history. Teresa, who hailed from a large family, only wished to instill the same warmth in her own family. Teresa was fortunate enough to survive childbirth of nine children -- two sons, Edmund and Henry (”Harry”) and then seven daughters. (See more about Bella’s siblings here.)
As Teresa hoped, the Aldwyn siblings were as close as can be. Even as a wee child, Bella liked to follow her brothers, especially Edmund and all his schoolboy friends. But it was Harry who she was closest to. Proximate in age, they grew up as best friends. Harry would let her get away with the most, defend her against Edmund and their parents, and even assist her little acts of rebellion. Of all their family members, Bella believes that Harry is the only one to truly understand her desire to make her own choices and have her own thoughts.
In the same vein, Bella dotes on her younger sisters, often pushing her sisters towards following their passions and to ignore the pending doom of being married off. Her mother and governess, all too aware of bella’s tendency to spoil and lead her sisters astray, are particularly firm in their discipline with the younger Aldwyns.
The Aldwyns had intended to debut Isabella when she turned 20, but after having her heart broken by her first love, she begged her parents to delay her entrance. This was followed by both her Father’s passing, and then Edmund’s passing only years after, which delayed her debut further. Now considered rather late for her first Season, Bella is debuting with her two younger sisters simultaneously. She is more than aware that her Mama is anxious for her eldest daughter to make the first match and set the precedent for her six (6) other daughters. In light of the recent deaths, and the taking up of the mantle by Harry, who had never prepared for the role as Viscount, a secure marriage would assure their old name continued to thrive, despite the recent tragedies.
However, Bella still struggles with Edmund’s sudden and mysterious death. Paired with the loss of her closest brother who must throw himself headfirst in being the Lord Cheltenham, Bella has been left stranded and alone in direction. What Bella is unawares of a dark shifting behind the scenes that may had led to Edmund’s death.
The Aldwyn name is one of old money and old title, passed down from generations. Despite only being a viscounty, their family is known for their wealth and fortune. Bella had never given thought to how the Aldwyns made their means. What she does not know is the unseemly business that her Father, Edmund, and cousin ran -- that the Aldwyn fortune is dirty and has been for generations, their family having multiple hands in the shadowy sides of England and beyond. From the talk of the town, she had heard rumours milling about pertaining to the secrecy behind their mass fortune and snippets of her father’s reputation -- ones that slandered him, claiming that anyone who spoke dirty of their family would be ridden of. Such rumours were always quashed as fast as they appeared. Neverthless, Bella finds it hard to believe her sweet father and her doting brother who were widely respected in the Ton would be anything but honourable.
O3 ━◞ LIKES, QUIRKS, AND TIDBITS
Growing up in Cheltenham, a region famed for its horse breeding and informal horse racing (soon to be formal in 1815 actually!), meant Bella was no stranger to horse riding. She had been riding with her Brothers since she was old enough to walk and handle a horse. Her favourite past-time is exploring the town and surrounding landscapes with Harry and her horse, Athena. Since childhood, bella always sought to be outdoors, preferring to run around on the grounds or to swim in nearby waterholes. Unfortunately, the older she became, the less she was permitted to do so.
Archery being one of the more active upper class activities that she is ‘permitted’ to engage in passionately, Bella is an excellent archer, and enjoys showing off her bowmanship at any garden or picnic event. Though she would not claim to be as polished in her pall-mall skills, she is irrationally competitive with the game. If she were to identify a reason, she would blame how often she and her siblings played in their childhood.
Having seen the way her parents looked at each other, Bella believes in marrying for love. That being said, the Season is not the most fitting of circumstances, and Bella finds herself more irritated than not after being constantly compared and sold around like cattle. The thought has crossed her mind to not marry as the biggest act of rebellion but finds herself waning in resolve at the thought of how it would affect her siblings. And she also has not put the possibility to rest that she possibly could be as fortunate as her parents and not only fall in love, but have the cards fall into perfect position.
Tidbit 1: Her birthday is February 18.
Tidbit 2:  If she is to be courted, the way to her heart is dancing. Bella has every quadrille, every waltz memorized, enough so she can dance the steps in her sleep.
Tidbit 3:  Though she lacks the attention span to make the most of her studies, bella does happen to have excellent visual memory, allowing her to play the lyre or the pianoforte from memory in short bouts. (Excellent party trick!) She does rather enjoy music, especially that of the lyre where she is not forced to sit.
Tidbit 4: She has a scar around her neck from an unfortunate horse-riding incident from when she was 12. Consequently, she is never without a large necklace. It is what she is most self-conscious of.
O4 ━◞ SECRETS
One of her dearest friends who she had met from town is one of the girls at her cousin’s whorehouse. There have been rumours that she frequents the place, more than any proper lady should, but not enough to have ever made trouble.
Something happened that scared her and that she’s buried deep in her memory; something that her Father covered up for her before he died. Will expand on this as roleplay goes. Dun dun dun.

But when Philip Aldwyn visited Italia for business and he met the saucy girl, it is as they say – it was history. Teresa, who hailed from a large family, only wished to instill the same warmth in her own family. Teresa was fortunate enough to survive childbirth of nine children – two sons, Edmund and Henry (”Harry”) and then seven daughters.
What she does not know is the unseemly business that her Father, Edmund, and cousin ran – that the Aldwyn fortune is dirty and has been for generations, their family having multiple hands in the shadowy sides of England and beyond. From the talk of the town, she had heard rumours milling about pertaining to the secrecy behind their mass fortune and snippets of her father’s reputation – ones that slandered him, claiming that anyone who spoke dirty of their family would be ridden of.
