I feel like we, as human beings should address the one overarching issue of not just the Dream smp fandom, but any place where people come together and discuss things they love. The issue: Debate. Discourse. Deliberation. Okay, that was three issues, but you get the picture. We, as a society (yes I'm throwing the 'S' word out there) need to get better at Debate. I get it, the four-year-olds on political stages have set a horrible example but I am here to give y'all a Tedd Talk on arguments, mostly pertaining to content creators but this can be used in any disagreement you ever hold. How to Properly Hold an Argument without being a Child in 4 Steps: Step 1: Never walk into a Debate expecting to change the other's mind This is a big one and it's one of the hardest to grasp. What? What do you mean? What's the purpose of argument if I don't convince the other they're wrong? The purpose of a debate is to offer your opinion and defend it against the world while you pick another's claim apart. Don't expect to change someone's mind. For your own benefit. If you see an opinion that is absolutely horrendus out there on social media, YouTube, Twitchchat, et cetera... and you click on it to refute it. You need to understand you're not refuting it to change that person's mind, but to display to the rest of your collegues why that opinion is, well... Bullshit. You live in a society where people are Ignorant, Misinformed, Sensationalists, or Trolls. Frankly, against certain people (namely trolls) you can't win. No matter what you say or how 'awesomely' constructed your argument is. You can not and will not win. All you can do is build up an opinion and post it and then suffer what 'deez nuts' jokes you get. Here, an example:
Troll: *insert terrible opinion here* Person A: No. That's wrong for reasons a, b, and c. You shouldn't believe that or spread it. Troll: lol, take a joke will you. You're so sensitive.
Naturally, this would upset you. I would be upset and it's okay if you are too. But you should not under any situation continue to feed the troll. Never expect to change someone's mind and never expect to win, especially against people like this. There is no winning in an argument, there's only hurt feelings and over-used claims. The best you can hope for is for your argument to sound and appear as the best option/opinion. Alright? Don't attack people and don't reply with pure emotion. Just breathe easier knowing you made a good argument, posted it, and the other is making a fool of themselves. Honestly, who's the fool? The informed person or the twelve year olds laughing about Bofa? Bofa what? Bofa deez - Aaand we're shutting it down there. So now you know what to walk in expecting in an argument. What do you do next? Step 2: Construct a solid Claim DON'T RUN! I SWEAT I'LL BE MORE CONCISE THAN THE ENGLISH TEACHERS OF HIGH SCHOOL! A claim is the core of your argument; the thing you're arguing about. It can be broad, it can be specific, but the most important part is that you stay on topic. Don't lose yourself to ranting. Always re-read what you type and delete any paragraphs that change the topic. For instance, if you're talking about the Dream speed-runs, you probably shouldn't go on a rant about the manhunts as they're two seperate catagegories and you'll look a bit confused. Step 3: Be mature, be concise, and do some research First things first: Don't deflect in an argument simply because you don't know something. Take your time, do research, form an opinion and come back to it. This will give you time to blow of steam AND stay informed. On the same note, absolutely do NOT use red herrings. Red herrings? Oh, that's when you deflect attention from the main topic with a shallow issue that's related. For instance, let's use discourse discusing a content creator's bias against... let's do something stupid like stuffed animals:
Person A: We need to talk about cc!So-and-So and they're Bias against stuffed animals. Person B: Sure, but there are so many children out there who are lacking connection and are never able to get stuffed animals due to strict parents. It feels wrong to only focus on one subject when there's a whole problem out there.
^^ This is a red herring. It's not always this obvious but for the love of all things good, don't do this. Second things second - this is SUPER important. Stop using Ad Hominem attacks in any and all debates. Ad Hominem attacks are the type that personally attacking your opponent instead of focusing on their position. I'm sure you can tell that politicians love that one - but it's actually an immature approach that cheapens your argument. To see it in practice:
Person A: I don't think it's a big deal that cc!So-and-So did blank and I don't see why everyone's making a big deal out of it. Person B: That's because you're a cc!So-and-So Stan. Person A: Well you're just a hater.
Right away you should be able to tell that there was no tangible argument against or for the content creator. Just a bunch of kids slinging mud on their opponents. Calling someone a 'hater' or a 'stan' shouldn't invalidate their opinion or bolster your own argument. Just because someone 'likes' or 'dislikes' something doesn't mean they can't talk about it, it just means they're likely to possess Implicit Bias or a subconcious bias towards something. Implicit Bias isn't a bad thing and it isn't something that invalidates an argument, it's something that should allow you to at least understand the reasoning for someone to hold a position. If you attack someone's personal standing instead of their opinion it only cheapens your argument because people now assume YOU have no idea what you're talking about and all you can do is hiss at your foe like a feral raccoon on drugs. No one wants to agree with a feral racoon on drugs, kind of how no one wants to agree with a politician. So, how can you better form an argument without mudslinging? It's a bit more complicated, but worth it. You research, you think before you type, you stay respectful, and... you listen to Step #4. Step 4: Sometimes. You have to accept that you were initially wrong. This one hurts. It hurts you and your confidence and all you can do is handle it best you can. I've taken debate and been in dozens or "professional arguments" (I hate that phrase) and I have been 'wrong' plenty of times. There's grace in that and it's an important lesson to learn. It is impossible to be right 100% of the time and it's impossible to be infallible. You have to accept that of yourself and those around you. If your opponent accepts they were wrong, do not continue to harp on them. That's cruel. Alternatively, if you realize you were wrong with your claim, you can admit you were mistaken and amend it. It takes a big person to do that and if your opponent has any decency, they'll recognize that. If they don't, congratulations, you've been arguing with a literal child. And now, you know everything about Debate. (That's a lie, but you know the basics and you can do a lot with the basics.) A good friend of mine once said that every opinion out there came from the mouth of both an asshole and an angel and we all have to be one of those things at some point in our lives. Debate, discourse, argument, all of that is hard and it can be straining or even toxic. Take a step back when necissary. Take a deep breath. Know that if you're feeling personally attacked, you're opponent is using immature methods to tear down your arguments. If you're argument is torn down and you don't know what to think, that's okay too. Take a breath, take a break, and allow yourself to mull it over. Forming your own opinion takes time and a clear mental space. You need both. So next time you see a troll, a jerk, an asshole, a hater, or a stan - don't let emotions get the better of you. Remember you are an intelligent person who is capable of forming your own opinions and NO ONE can take that away from you. Think, research, and then type.
TLDR: Don't expect to win every argument, don't expect to be always right, don't divert your opponents attention, don't personally attack your opponent, always be respectful, always do research, never do anything with pure emotion. Remember you're forming your own opinions and that takes time and space so give yourself that when you need it.
That's it! Best of luck Debating~

I feel bad for all the nice J*nsa shippers who like their ship for whatever reasons (tropes, pretty art, aesthetic appeal, whatever) and know it's not canon but get associated with the misogynistic Dany hating crowd who act like Jon being attracted to Ygritte is J*nsa foreshadowing because red hair (I guess Jon should fuck Edmure Tully too? Omg give me Dark!Jon getting revenge on Catelyn by seducing her brother!) Tell me something. I'm new to the fandom but was J*nsa popular before the show? And I've heard something about the OG J*nsa shippers being alienated by the new shippers who insisted it had to be canon and acted like the series is called, "A song of J*nsa #danysux." I don't find that hard to believe because I know people who are now ashamed of calling themselves J*nsa shippers. Like, at this point, it's not only rival shippers who hate it. Even Gendrya/Braime/Jon stans/etc have started disliking that ship. You know your fandom is a problem when people who have nothing to do with Jnsa have a problem with it.
me: reads this ask
me: iwastheregandalf.gif which I can't find now but
okay anon buckle up because I am sadly well-equipped to answer this ask but before I do lemme tell you dark jon seducing edmure to take revenge on cat is LITERALLY THE BEST THING I'VE EVER HEARD but *clears throat* ALL RIGHT THEN.
disclaimer: as anon says I have no issue with like the shippers mentioned by anon in the beginning and ngl I agree, I have ABSOLUTELY ZERO FUCKING STAKES in the j*nsa vs j*nerys war and the only het jon ship I gaf about is jon/ygritte and we all know where that ended up I just... have been here since 2011/adwd was over and all the fic around was just for the books under secret lj communities and asoiaf qualified for yuletide and I have... seen... things.... and I actually have like uh had... beef... with some people in there and I know things bc ppl who hated those others told me stuff so anyway *sigh* buckle up anon I'mma tell you the story of jon shipwars through the years
in order, the old gods help me here, under the cut bc this is long as fuck
when I got into fandom also given what numbers were on ao3 one ship was popular and it was sansan. no like sansan was lit. the only asoiaf ship on ao3 with more than 200 fics. jb had twenty when i checked first. jc had like around 100-ish because of the show but sansan dwarfed anything. I posted the first jon/ygritte fic on the ao3 tag and the fourth throbb fic and like the others were all reposts from lj kinkmemes. nothing was popular before the show except for sansan when it comes to huge numbers bc grrm doesn't like fic and it was all hush hush until the show made it impossible to control and that ship was the one with a huge enough fanbase it actually had numbers, so like... j*nsa wasn't popular in the way nothing else was popular until it got screentime on the show
now, that stated, j*nsa had a... fair amount of fic for a rareship which was mostly book-based and from og shippers that were there from before the show and liked it for what it was but literally none of them thought it was gonna be canon, like it wasn't huge or anything but it had a small but dedicated fanbase who did their own thing and thought it was fun/liked the idea but that was it
that fandom had their own niche of hcs that they cultivated and shit except that like... at the end of S5/beginning of S6 there was a surge in shipping for... well obvious reasons bc it was obv sansa was getting to the wall and that would have been all nice and good but a) it was the time puritanical shipping was starting to take root and the 'shipping sansa with sandor or tyrion is hella problematic' rhetoric had started to circle coming from sans*ery shippers mostly but I'mma not open that fucking can of worms here, b) while the ending of S5 had more of a theon/sansa spike, the j*nsa stuff started getting big
now here we have to mention my villain origin story ie: j*nsa fandom had this one stan whose name I won't make because honestly it's been years and if she's still around I don't want her to remember I exist who was a bnf, wrote for... the website that created the whole larry/carol thing etc who was really fixed on this thing that j*nsa was actually canon and started writing extremely popular meta about it. now you're gonna ask how do you know, I know because this person once wrote a meta named 'why robb stark is a dick' and I told her that it was really fucking bad meta and she took it so badly she kept on trash talking me on her blog/her podcast (I was apparently the insane robb stark fangirl l m a o good lord) and like that was when some sane ppl who argued with her informed me in pvt that she was basically harping on the CANON thing when they'd have been okay with like... it being crackshipping and that she was basically cultivating a hoarde of followers who were harping on them/the ogs and basically ostracizing them;
I would like to add that this person - before her tumblr got 'accidentally deleted' and remade it therefore deleted most receipts for, er, her so-called meta which included stuff like ned and cat raised sansa as a sexual object and only wanted to sell her like cattle - had at some point started a round robin fic thing where... some of the characters mocked openly said stuff that some of the og fans had said specifically targeting them and people in that side basically went harassing anyone who didn't agree with that specific notion
now never mind that this person basically coined an entire term to describe ppl who liked white guys and excused all their wrongdoings out of my conversation re robb basically lying about everything I said as if I didn't have the receipts and tried to sell shirts with it and it didn't work and like then she got kicked out of her own website because she was telling her commenters disagreeing pretty shitty insults (considering I was called psychotic for disagreeing with her that time I don't doubt it) I think at some point she stepped back from fandom bc idk wtf she's up to these days and I don't want to, but basically at that point the dam was broken and there was a bunch of puritanical shippers harping on anyone who didn't agree with j*nsa is canon endgame stuff
this also includes an incident when those ppl were like... passing themselves as throbb shippers and ended up trying to tell t*hramsay shippers off the theon tag based on moral reasons and I ended up arguing with all of them (and they were all from that crowd) which in turn landed me in contact with other og j*nsa shippers who were like detached from that fandom bc those same people harassed them away as well ssooooo fun
anyway when S6 happened everyone was high on it and whatnot but I wasn't gonna begrudge them that I mean... you shipped it for years, canon is delivering you, good for you, but then j*nerys happened
god j*nerys happened
aaand basically...... I mean personally I was there like are y'all seriously arguing about the best incest jon ship out there but like basically the j*nsa endgame side was like AH JON IS PLAYING DANY SEE IF IT DOESN'T HAPPEN, the j*nerys obv got defensive af and both sides were sort of alternatively shitting on jon/ygritte anyway and depicting any other romantic rship jon could have as abusive™ and during S8 it just got worse and like I tried to stay out of it but basically from what I'm seeing now idk how the j*neryses are doing but on the j*nsa one it's ah jon's gonna play dany anyway and she's going to go insane like in the show so SHOW TRUTHING EVERY OTHER WAY and like again denying that sandor exists or that tyrion exists and like I barely touch my corner (sansan) but I ended up arguing with j*nsa/th*nsa people on twitter who were antis and is2g it was white-hair inducing and I know for sure the sansa/tyrion shippers were harassed to hell and back throughout so FUN
and even if the show didn't go there now since everyone there banked on the jnsa endgame thing and admitting you're wrong is like... not a thing, they still haven't let go of it and attach to that ship any shred of evidence which honestly is grasping at straws half of the time (like... the sansa/alysanne parallels like guys please no) and which is why every other ship is starting to get fed up, attaching canon proof of stuff from other ships onto theirs see that batb argument and jb is platonic but jonsa is not nvm taking all the sansan stuff and throwing it on j*nsa but then denying that sansan has canon evidence (like guys I had to read sansa touching his shoulder when saying gregor wasn't a true knight wasn't meaningful and we were seeing things please) and blah blah blah
this also goes hand in hand with the fixation on like... villanizing dany at all costs and like is2g I have zero investment in dany or her storyline I don't even remember it and I don't particularly care abt her either way and sure af I'm not for j*nerys endgame but like.... some stuff I read is completely excessive esp when fixing on how she's a completely mad tyrant who's gonna have to be put down and like... guys no
(also there's some srs stannis hate in that corner which I honestly don't get why they even care abt stannis but I had to read stuff like ppl don't recognize that dany and stannis are the real villains in this saga and like........ idek)
I think most of the og shippers are gone or don't ship it openly bc they don't want to be attached to the drama but like I also think they're pissing off everyone else bc like... I mean a bunch of them also were down with sansa being paired with other ppl as long as it meant a good ending for her except those ppl were... like everyone but the ppl she has actual contact with in canon which meant that at some point sansa/gendry was a thing and like.... you can imagine why arya/gendry shippers & arya stans were fed up, and there's also this tendency to behave like sansa is the center of the entire saga which like these books is named a song of jon snow basically can we pls make peace with it and personally I've had it with both j*nsa and j*nerys people since they started with that dumbass JON/YGRITTE WAS AN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP rhetoric but I'm also fed up with the total ignoring that sandor exists/depicting us as delusional and honestly I also was by proxy fed up from the harassing of the sansa/tyrion shippers soooooooooooo
there were also instances of 'well theon is an acceptable choice other than jon bc he can't threaten her' which... i mean we all know what that meant and I'm not even commenting it bc it's one AM and I have no force to but I don't have to explain why it's not a progressive take now do I
there were also metas about how cousin incest being legal in half of the world means that jondany is a worse incest and j*nsa doesn't count as such and I was basically there like guys please just fucking own up to it but honestly I chose to forgot where I read that and I couldn't find the link if I tried
tldr: no one wants to admit that it's not gonna be endgame which considering the amount of fic they have on ao3 is imvho useless bc they have more content than like.. anything I ship that's not jb or that's actually like canon *cries in joncon/rhaegar but I mean renly/loras is canon and has less fic than them* so idk what's the problem with enjoying that instead of insisting it's gonna be canon when not even the show validated it while show truthing anyway when the only show truthing that can be truthed is the small council made of minorities and possibly jon eventually fucking off with the wildlings but not like that but like most people who thought it wasn't gonna be endgame had left/were made to leave by the time S7 rolled by and at this point since wow isn't out yet everyone is fandom-grasping at straws to find stuff to discourse on and we're here beating dead horses *shrug*
so that's... how it is but I would again like to point out that I don't judge ppl on their shipping, I don't particularly care about this entire feud bc I only ship jon with ppl he's not related to in whichever way and I try to stay out of this mess bc I don't really care to argue with ppl who have already decided to bend canon to whatever they want and will have to realize that it's not what grrm wrote at some point but like I have a very good memory and the above rant is as objective as possible also bc again I don't literally have a stake in that race I just think romantic/endgame j*nsa is not a thing and that ppl should stay in their lane and not harping on other ppl who ship whatever in general but especially when their ship is the most popular thing in fandom in the first place /two cents

All right, y'all, I've had enough with shitty society. I say we start a cult called "Actual Inclusivity."
Instead of the center of the cult's teachings being some manipulative bullshit, it's literally just love, acceptance, and respect.
We buy some land and start a communal living situation but instead of the money going up to whoever is on top and making them rich, all the money goes toward upkeep and improvement for the whole community. The finances are transparent and available for anyone to see and anyone shown to be corrupt or messing with the money gets kicked out.
We keep a farm to feed everyone. We have high speed wi-fi and some apartments (maybe with communal kitchens, maybe with private ones, idk logistics aren't my strong suit but I wouldn't be the only one running this, so we'd work out the kinks)
Everyone gets to do what they enjoy. Artists make art (and they could do commissions and freelance work and stuff like that to help raise money for the community in addition to art for art's sake), scientists can do their science thing, people who enjoy gardening can tend the farm. Tech people can do tech stuff (idk, I don't do much stem stuff, but we wouldn't be amish, so there'd be upkeep for tech stuff needed, so y'know). Whatever else. Autistic people can spend loads of time focused on their special interests. Non-verbals are not expected to talk. Depressed people or people with anxiety are not expected to work on days when getting out of bed is too difficult. Anyone having a panic attack or PTSD episode while working immediately gets to put down their work, walk away, and come back when they are again capable of giving their work their attention, be that in an hour or not until the next morning. Everyone uses whatever pronouns they prefer, and everyone else uses the appropriate pronouns when addressing or referring to them. If swearing makes someone uncomfortable, people will be expected to respect that and filter their language around them. Everyone gets to love whoever they want with zero societal repercussions. If two people want to get married, they get to. If two people want to live together without getting married, no prob (living together pre-marriage is against my religious beliefs, so I wouldn't do so, but that doesn't mean no one is allowed to. Live according to your own beliefs as long as they don't hurt anyone else. The goal here isn't to make everyone believe same thing or act the same way. It's to respect each other, and hopefully foster more understanding for others and lower discrimination and hate). In that vein, polygamy makes me feel weird, (admittedly, I don't really understand it,) but if some people in a polygamous marriage wanted to join us and were willing to follow the rules, great! Hop in! Let's even have a talk about it. You can help me be more understanding. No one is allowed to force their beliefs into anyone else and if someone feels pressured by someone else, all they have to do is say so and the other person will stop. I've had enlightening and wonderful conversations about religion with people of other religions/also atheists (once even with a drunk atheists and that was great). And all those conversations were great because in no way did they expect me to change my beliefs and vice versa. There was just a sharing of perspectives. And afterward, I felt like I understood them better and they understood me better. And that's what I'm aiming for here.
We can have a few sensory deprivation tanks and weighted blankets available for people with anxiety/PTSD. We can have tons of fidget toys for anyone who needs them to help them focus. We can have anything people need to function their best (I don't know much about what people with neurological disorders that I don't also have need, but whatever they need we'd have). Everything written is also written in braile. There's elevators and ramps in every building. Guide dogs and ESAs are accepted anywhere except in the space of people with animal allergies (Like, the communal areas are regularly cleaned to prevent hair causing allergic reactions and such and there are signs designating pet-free zones). We could maybe have like an animal shelter in a nearby town that anyone can come into to help with and spend time with animals. There would be a prayer room for quiet meditation (with whatever anyone needs for their best prayer environment, like I know Muslims pray toward Mecca and I don't know if there's any ornamentations or anything that they would prefer to have, but if so, it would be there). There'd be a gym to give people access to exercise equipment. There'd be a big old clock tower with bells to indicate prayer times for anyone who needs them. There would be a church building for use by any religious denomination. There'd be regular community activities to give people the chance to have leisurely social interaction and also sometimes exercise in small or large groups, but no one is expected to take part. Everyone with any form of neurodiversity or from any minority group gets to be treated fairly and have their needs accommodated.
No proving you have a disability like you have to to get accommodations from colleges. No one telling you it's all in your head or it's not natural or you should try harder or you just haven't met the right person yet or treating you as being under them for your gender or skin color or anything else you have no control over. Just actual acceptance on every front.
Basically, you'd pretty much be able to live your best life under the principle I learned as a kid: "your agency ends where the next person begins." As long as your actions do not harm anyone, you are free to do as you like.
The rules for living here? Everyone will be expected to contribute however they can (no punching a time clock, but contribute to the best of your ability). There will be no discrimination or hatred toward others. That's pretty much it. It's not that complicated. You will be expected to respect others and they will be expected to respect you. Any crime of any kind would be punished (and I mean things like theft, which I expect would be far less likely to happen given that everyone would have their basic needs fulfilled, and not like things like drug addiction because criminalizing addicts doesn't really prevent people getting addicted and just makes the problem worse.)
I figure the system would be run by committee. Any issues would be put to a vote, and given the size of the group, everyone would get a vote and everyone's vote counts. There would be no one person in charge of the community. Not me, not anyone. Everyone is equally in charge. Issues of things like accusations of discrimination would be handled by a court type situation where a mediator is chosen and both people get to explain what happened (in case of false accusations, which hopefully wouldn't happen, but y'know), and if the problem is based on a misunderstanding or an unchecked or unevaluated privilege, maybe the discussion alone could help the two people work it out, and if not, they get a big meeting with everyone there, and they get a chance to give their side to the group and the group votes on whether or not the accusation is solid and if the accused person will be punished (idk 100% how the punishment would work, but I figure depending on the severity it could be like a first offense would get community service and some kind of lesson in bridging cultural differences or something and a second offense would get something harsher and a third offense would be getting booted from the community. And then something like rape would get an immediate boot.).
Straight/white/cis/NT/any other non-minority people would also be accepted and welcomed so long as they treat everyone there with respect.
And anyone who says or does something homophobic or misogynistic or racist or ableist or anything else along those lines gets first a gentle warning and a chance to re-evaluate their prejudice and if they refuse to check themselves they get kicked out with whatever money they came in with.
I know that no matter what system is in use, there will always be someone ready and willing to find holes and take advantage. So we'd run on a spirit-of-the-law system instead of a letter-of-the-law system, and with everyone getting a say and everyone basing their decisions on that foundation of respect, it would be easier to enforce.
And sure, maybe this is just a fantasy-land-pipe-dream, but come on. How cool would it be? No more forcing our triangle or star or pentagon or splatter-shaped peg asses into circular holes? I don't believe in humanity at large to implement large-scale actual acceptance, but a little mini-society? That seems a little less impossible, right?
This is all spitballing, but the more I think about it, the more I love it. Feel free to add on.

Dookie 25th Anniversary Party (2019)
Green Dazed (Green Day Tribute Band) with Slap Happy and The Vanilla Milkshakes.
Venue:
The Marquis Theater
(08/10/19)
Stats:
1st time seeing Green Dazed.
1st time seeing Slap Happy.
1st time seeing The Vanilla Milkshakes.
1st Album and 1st Cover Band Show.
I’ve told the story a million times, but for those who don’t know, Dookie by Green Day was the first CD ever given to me, unsurprisingly by my father. (He also bought me the cassette too, but I managed to loose it and will forever beat myself up over that fact.) Anyway this year is the 25th anniversary of said album which meant the people wanted to party. I’m fan of covers, but surprisingly I’ve never seen a cover band before, so when the opportunity came up, I ask good old Jon to come out with me for I think his first cover show too. I’ve also never seen Green Day live, but all my Green Day-esk experiences have been with my friend Jon, so I think we’re just going to keep collecting them together, which is fine by me.
If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ve probably seen me go to a concert dressed up in some sort of theme before. It could just be me not really doing costumes, but when given the chance I’ll put a little something together. For this show I pulled out my infamous green stripped tie and green Morbid Threads plaid pants that I’ve had since middle/high school. I know the show was for Dookie, I but I was totally not mad at myself for mixing different Green Day eras and that was okay because the lead singer was 2004/2005 Billie Joe, so there’s really no rules here.
Not shown: There was also a mid-drift showing thing that happened, but I was too in my head to keep it the whole night, so I pulled my shirt down have way through.
The combination of an all ages show and cover band was something else for sure, but still ended up being hella fun. There was an eleven or thirteen year old with his mom attending his first concert together standing alongside middle aged people moshing in the same pit. It’s 100% cliché of me, but some music can and is timeless.
Side Note: My only problem was that some of the older people (older than me) weren’t so stellar at the whole boundaries thing. (And don’t tell me there are no boundaries at shows, cause that’s just an excuse to be rude.) There were different people  trying to pull me and even the little kid into the mosh pit, which was uncool cause not everyone wants to and can comfortably be in a mosh pit. PS: The pit and the most pit are two different things and some of y'all need to learn or re-learn the difference hella quickly please.
The opening bands weren’t cover bands themselves, but you can tell that they both had Green Day influences, so even though I hadn’t listen to them before, their music wasn’t so foreign of a listen to me and with a name like Slap Happy, ones to assume where they got their name from. Everyone fit, without having to be replicas.
On the other side, it was also very cool to see someone in The Vanilla Milkshakes play a show while on oxygen. I feel like there are internal assumptions I’ve made about what a person is capable of doing while performing and then seeing someone simply live their life on stage helped throw some of those away. The more I see us having conversations about accessibility at shows, the more excited I am when I see it unfolding in person.
Back to the no rules thing, there seems to be none when it comes to cover bands/their shows. The whole night felt like no one was there to impress anyone and the only objective was to have fun. Green Dazed, the “headliner,” played all of Dookie once and then proceeded to play fan favorites a few more times. They gave me the set-list, so I know they had a whole set filled with different tracks to play, and they did play them all, but if a kid’s favorite song is Basket Case (or so I remember) and it’s his first concert, why not give it to them twice? Normally we’re all good with hearing Blitzkrieg Bop as a hype track once, but how do you feel about hearing it twice, maybe 3 times? Again they could do “whatever they wanted” and no one got mad about it.
I would say that my first cover band show or whatever you want to call it was hella fun and successful. Jon might of had a feeling about it being an all ages show, but he was the one getting down and dirty in that pit with people who seemed old enough to be his parents, so I think we both had a winner here.
It’s also a win when you’re not the oldest one at an all ages show. Positives. ;)
PS: The “Mike Dirnt” character was a fill in from a Ramones cover band (or so they said) and that was funny to me.

Listen, fam. I'm coming out.
Look, I've been working on the best way to do this for a while. I had a whole long thing typed up & I kept re-writing it for months. But I think I'm just gonna get to the point. I'm coming out. I identify as pansexual. What is pansexuality, you ask? Well, it basically means that I feel attraction to anyone, regardless of their gender. Cis men & women, trans men & women, agender folks, demigender folks, etc. If you've never heard of pansexuality before, lemme hit you with that Wikipedia link real quick to help you out: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pansexuality . Pansexuality is pretty adjacent to bisexuality & often gets confused for it. However, the two are slightly different in that bisexuality is attraction to two or more genders & pansexuality is attraction to anyone of any gender. A couple things to note real quick before we continue: 1. Pansexuality doesn't mean that you're attracted to EVERYONE you see. It simply means that your capacity to feel attraction isn't primarily based on gender. 2. If you make any jokes about having sex with pans, you're officially a cornball. I'm just giving you a heads up, is all. Sorry but I don't make the rules. So the thing you might be wondering is how I figured this out. To be honest, I'm still trying to figure out how I could go 29 years without knowing this about myself. But every time I think back, there is one element of my past that explains why it took so long. Growing up in a predominantly conservative christian home, the idea of being gay or anything close to it was a non-starter. It was a sin & a heavily condemned one, at that. As a result, any time a "gay thought" would pop up in my head, I tried to get it out of there as quick as possible. It became an instant reflex to keep that kind of thought out of my head. But I still would feel guilt for the thought, as well as guilt from "lusting" for women. My teens were a confusion time where I was discouraged from even considering an attraction for another gender while also being told I was TOO attracted to the "right" gender. Not a great situation, emotionally. Unfortunately, I suspect it's not an uncommon occurrence for kids growing up in strict christian homes. That said, I felt more comfortable exploring attraction & affection towards cisgendered women (even if it led to "sin" or whatever ugh) mainly because it was instilled in me by conservative christian culture that being gay was worse in the eyes of both God & the church congregation than sleeping with a woman before marriage. If you did that, the church congregation would murmur about you for a bit & engage in some form of slut-shaming hidden under the guise of "asking god for forgiveness." If you were gay? That was a disease. A sinful disease. You'd be quarantined, or ostracized, from that community unless they had the "grace" to help you get therapy to pray the gay away. So, being a massively horny but perpetually nervous teen, I chose to guiltily explore attraction to cis women & push everything else out. In college, my views on both religion & sexuality became more liberal. I no longer thought of being gay as a sin disease (although Sin Disease is a good name for a metal band, now that I think about it). This trend continued after college & beyond, to the point of total acceptance & support for the LGBTQIA community. Folks were gay (including several friends of mine) & that's cool. But I never thought about it for myself. I never allowed myself to really consider the possibility that I could be attracted to anyone else because I always struck the thought down when it popped up in my head. Even though I was no longer religious, I still carried that reflex I learned as a child years ago. The reflex that conservative Christianity taught & encouraged within me. I guess what I'm saying is that religious suppression is a powerful thing. And that only started to unravel for me late last year. I can't point to one thing that started the unraveling process because it really was a culmination of a bunch of different things (such as talking with some cool queer folks about their experiences & finally allowing myself to let in/process non-heteronormative thoughts). It was in late January where I first admitted out loud to one of my roommates that I was beginning to think that I wasn't actually straight. It was really hard for me to find the words for how I felt. None of the established labels (gay, bi, etc) felt 100 percent accurate for me. She actually helped point me toward the idea of pansexuality, which seemed closer to how I felt (I would later talk to some cool queer folks who helped verify some information about pansexuality, where it fit in the rainbow, etc). And a weird thing happened that night. I felt a weight lift off of me. It happened almost instantly. It was like a weight that I never knew was there. And I started crying. Was this what I was carrying with me for 29 years? Was that reflex to kick the idea of anything queer out of my head keeping this weight on me? Even now, with the large amounts of stress/worry that I feel on a day-to-day basis, I think about all of this & it feels like a bright spot in an otherwise dark world for me. Like, the world is going to shit, but I finally figured out this important truth about myself. Anyway, that's a lot of words up there. And I'm not done! I still need to tell you why I'm saying all of this! But I know this has been a long read, so feel free to run to the bathroom if you need to. It occurred to me that I might not be the only one in this situation. If conservative christian culture was able to burrow that repressive reflex that deep into me (so deep that it lasted years after I left the church), it had to do the same to other folks. Maybe there's someone reading this that hasn't even allowed themselves to consider their sexual identity. Maybe someone's reading that's just starting to ask some questions about their identity. If so, I want to tell you that it's okay to question & explore that side of yourself, even if you don't really have a name for it yet. I certainly didn't know what to call myself at first, other than "not straight". You're 100% not alone in this. I'm out here with you, grasping at bits of truth, filling in the gaps, & trying to find answers but feeling so much more free in the journey than I ever did in the comfort of what I knew. If you are in that situation, there are a lot of good resources to help you fill in the gaps & answer some of those lingering questions. If you have a friend in the LGBTQIA community, don't be afraid to ask them about their own experience. Talking with folks who had an experience coming to grips with their own queerness helped me quite a bit, even when our experiences were different. It's just nice to know you're not some unsolvable mystery & that this this thing (whatever you end up calling it) is a very positive thing. If you live in a big enough city, you probably have an equality center that provides resources, access to affordable counseling, support groups, & social events (where you can meet other folks within the community). If your city doesn't have something like that, there are online resources that can help as well. Here's a link for the GLBT National Help Center, in case you're in that situation: http://glbtnationalhelpcenter.org . Hopefully that ends up being helpful to anyone who needs it. It's 2018 & while there have been massive strides in LGBTQIA rights/visibility, there are still many ways in which members of the community are harmed & discriminated against (spearheaded largely by our current administration). We're not in a time where everyone everywhere can feel 100% safe openly exploring their sexual and/or gender identity. I'm a huge dummy in many respects, but if some of the information in this post helps someone feel less alone or points them in the right direction, then it'll be worth it. I realize that there are folks I know who hold more conservative views. They'll probably read all of this (or like, just the first two paragraphs lol) & decide I'm heading straight to hell. If they're being generous, they'll say that they're "praying for me" & pity me as another lost soul. Which, whatever. I'll be fine. If anything, I feel more free than I ever did repressing such a big part of myself. Plus, these are people who voted for Trump (& if they didn't, they are still largely okay with the gay-hating coward Mike Pence). So we're not gonna see eye-to-eye on this no matter what. 🤷‍♂️ Also they can fuck off. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ I guess that's all I have to say. If you stuck around & read all of this, I appreciate you indulging me as I tried to fumble around explaining myself. It's been about 5 months since I first came out to my roommate & I'm happy to finally share the good news with y'all. I'm going to my first ever Pride parade soon. It'll be my first time around a large gathering of queer folk. I normally don't really like being out in large groups (nor do I love highly corporate-sponsored events, which this surely will be). That being said, I'm really excited! I seriously can't wait for this. Probably because it feels like finally being united with a group you never knew you were a part of. It's an event specifically celebrating the idea that it's cool & good to be queer, to be part of this rainbow. For the first time in a long time, it feels like I'm moving in the right direction.

We're doing Cinderella.
If you wake me up from a dead sleep, SWAT is coming to your house and were DNA4U for your entire house.
1. You'll start getting paid through the app.
2. You'll see if you win the Lotto
If you remove kids from your house and still try to wake me then you'll get everyone from the last 3 weeks on the SMS that had been in and out your house or you went and talked to on the street ib order to sell to or other random what ever. That time starts now even if you wake me next week.
We have found 9 grandkids from only 3 houses. 6 were grandsons. And obviously 3 were girls.
So they were all found healthy and well. An almost 9 year old happened to look only 2 and that is normal.
The old parents helped pack and that was all. Some are just simple switched at birth issues.
Dna4u is to see if were compatible.
I'm no longer talking and just sending over my friends in SWAT. They are there to protect you. Otherwise I'd just get mad for being woken up and want to fight and kill you.
I designed this program in 2008 when i was a less bitter and angry person.
I am the Queen so no need to be afraid and try to hide kids like this current house. There was 10 people -- 8 adults and one of the women took the boys out the back door in order to run and hide them
Both ran to the SWAT. One is my grandson and one is not.
No one will be arrested. You'll just be disappointed if the "shoe doesn't fit"
Im quite sure that woman will not fit although the DNA will have to be checked anyway.
Usually some tingling occurs right after the test. It mimics my excitement.
SWAT doesn't have a list but I can create one with magic or Tree can do it for me. So.
Once people quit waking me then the SWAT may attempt to visit to check if you're the one that fits the shoe.
Its called the Cinderella Gimmick..
The word Gimmick is used because most people don't trust cops and there really isn't an actual shoe, just spit.
So they are not on their usual department needs thus they must be off duty from their regular shifts on their off time and they volunteer to do this service for us in the world as I am the Queen and the King may be having amnesia, possibly from being hit in the head with a rock.
So no problems have occurred except now this chick had taken out the kids at the 3rd house. And its over 100° outside and its too hot to be taking people out and running all over and so now SMS will alert if someone has been removed and not returned within 24 hours of the waking or the list. This is for their safety. If a car doesn't have air conditioning or enough gas to drive around. Its too hot to sit even in the shade. And with Quarentine we're not supposed to be going to others houses and all that for health reasons and I don't want anyone to conflict with anyone else or to risk their own lives in this intense heat.
Its simple, off duty SWAT volunteers. They don't see nor csre about bongs or what exactly is in them or how many dishes aren't done or what is in the fridge -- within the exception of having one of my blood relatives then what is available for the children, especially, to eat is a concern. No one cares about the blunt left in the ashtray.
But that there is 2-3 things the child likes to eat and will last or did last about a week. So loaf of bread and jar of Goober. Some frozen meals if it's the kids organic version with hidden vegetables in the food or kids cuisine or even Banquet as long as the kids like the food in the meals and then say a box of their favorite crackers. Plus plenty of available liquid for the child to drink. Water and ice or just filtered water or juice or Capri suns or chocolate milk. What ever the kid likes.
So if the loaf of bread is half gone as well as the jar of peanut butter or lunch meat and cheese but its obvious there's more than one loaf of bread or the kid isn't told to lie they ate it when they did not. Tree will tell. And the bread id available and the kid was told to tell what to buy next soon because store time was coming up... Its not a problem.
Sometimes my kid eats almost a whole loaf of bread in a day. Point is that the kid can get what food they like or served to them on a daily.
Some do home cooking everyday and have leftovers the kids can get themselves by taking it to the table and loading it on a fresh clean regular or paper plate or bowel and can microwave or get help to.
They're small not handicapped or retarded.
Most will ask to be shown the microwave once to know they're doing it fine and not wasting time.
They been watching you for years.
Also they need clean laundry. Thr first house had 9 kids and 6 adults and no clean laundry.
So we are still in search and there is likely no reason to keep their names on a second go round for an interview if the King isn't found.
They didn't search. He was honest and said they had only laundry when the kids all said their clothes hadnt been washed and were re-wearing dirty. So the kids packed dirty and our assistants will wash. In fact the machines are already going with Tide and Snuggle. So its not a totally big deal.
Annabelle used to wear dirty uniforms to school because she refused to carry them to the machine, it lasted about a month before I threw down a fit. I'd tell her and our cousin Alex was living with us with his mom and I'd tell him and I told his mom. They continued playing Barbies and refused to carry the laundry for me.
So I went in and turned on the lights and said no playing you will get this laundry into the kitchen now. So i can wash it. ALL YOUR SCHOOL UNIFORMS FOR THE BOTH OF YOU, I'm gonna sit right here on this bed until you start carrying. And ill wait till you're done if you insist. Because this is ridiculous, if I can tell they're not clean so can your teachers and your principal and if you keep going to school dirty, were all going to get in trouble.
So sometimes we gotta lasso them in. But as parents or just simple adults we need to.
The first house had working laundry machines.
So.
Like I said its not a huge deal. I know kids sometimes simply do not care. Some are even afraid of clean clothes. But they should have some clean laundry available
But the food definitely takes presidency over the laundry. All the houses have been cleaned and cared for this far.
Again some people actually prefer a messy house and so fresh food is what is looked at when my relatives are there, especially children or those without working cars. Wal-Mart pick up is available for those without cars and it literally takes 15 minutes to get like 100 items loaded in the auto. And so someone should be able to help. If not then we will have to find resources.
So the kids will be going on vacation for the summer and so they should take many things as possible. Especially their favorite items. We don't care what it is. If its a makeup box or giant stuffed bear. There's plenty of room to store or to have in their room. Plus then all their clothes. If it was too small but their favorite and they want to keep for themselves or let another relative to borrow it or pass it down, it doesn't matter, it gets packed to go.
There's no arresting or ticketing and if you know and you didn't report, we found them safe and well and so it doesn't matter.
Usually there's at least one responsible parent type that cares about the kids and that is most important over reporting.
Its not even what were looking for but everyone in the house must be under DNA4U for protection and payments. If a kidnapping occurs we can retrieve with DNA proof you belong to us as well as many other incidents that are unwell.
And all 3 houses had a kid of mine's kid. They all seem to be eggs so a surrogate may not had a clue.
Valencia County has one of the lowest rates of dna4u at only nearly 3% -- 2 point 9 percent.
Albuquerque has 9%
And all y'all are missing money.
So lets do $5 on this if you read and understood and it will be on your dna4u if you haven't taken it yet. If you have it will be there. You can read it 4 or 5 times if necessary. I would if I was one of Cinderella's candidates or wanted to be.
**i mention the food as the kids will be going on vacation if they biologically belong to my family, there's only 2million in the world. And so we would like to take their favorite foods or be informed of them, especially if they're picky.
Like some only like Goober. Or some only like preserves with seeds in it. Or some have allergies or have spent time finding their particular favorite brand of a certain bread or frozen food. Some don't care. But if they only like the green wrapper burrito or they like the orange, too. We should know. Just makes shopping easier and we will have available their own food for a week. So they hate dinner? Well your favorite food is in your cabinet then. Some may like to make their own but with me they need to bring it to me if its a bread and sandwich or if its a microwave, some may need to get it for me if its like in the bottom of the freezer and I have to bend. Like if it needs assembly then they need to gather the items for me so I can make it while sitting. I will have assistants but. This way they can learn some independence. I've done it with alot of kids and they enjoy it and they learn alot. Now Declan did not enjoy learning to use the microwave because he used an acrylic bowl like i told him not to but didn't listen. So don't have any acrylic dishes. "I didn't think you would let me. But i knew i could. But never let me do that again! That was hot!!" He spilled quite alot of chowder and so I told him to wait and eat and we would clean it together. Then i moved the ceramic dishes to on top of the microwave so he knew which to use. He said it was still too hot but he managed to skill up on the pot holder using.
And he said it took longer to microwave with ceramic. So they learn at their own pace and in their own way.
So to assemble a sandwich they recognize the ingredients they like to eat. So onion, tomato, lettuce, cheese and ham and cheese loaf. Or not.. Whatever they want. They learn their own tastes.
Draven would be all "marshmallow fluff, meat and oh yeah cheese and can i have some avocado"
"All on bread?"
"Yeah here"
And he would hand me two pieces of bread "i want wheat"
"You want all this in the same concotions"
"That would be me.yeah yup"
"Heavy on the marshmallow fluff or light?"
"Heavy mean alot? Just do it like mayonnaise. You know what that is right?"
He was 4. And he would eat it all because he liked it.
So they really have freedom not to eat what we make for the majority. But we don't know what they like and so maybe also the parents don't because I know Sara didn't let Draven make that kinda food for himself. But he took full advantage of "anything we want?!?"
"As long as you eat it or eat at least half. Or try some good big bites before you decide you don't like it."
But some kids just want their comfort foods and we like to know what that is.
Luckily except for Declan the rest found Pizza as their comfort food. Declan liked Clam Chowder. But would take a slice of pizza he would dip into it and let the other kids try.
I typically only make dinner but make sure the rest eat. Because those 4 were very independent or wanting to be and usually it was just me. With other random people in and out. Jesse usually brought fast food for lunch for us. And they could do breakfast on their own. We had plenty of milk and cereal and enough spills to ruin a carpet.
But we will have assistants to help teach as I physically not. Like we have 8+ now. Kids. So that's alot of milk to pour for me while standing. And watch they pour it in the cereal just right. Dad will kill me if we trash his hotel. So.
The other one was mine and we were doing renovations anyway. So didn't matter.

I can’s speak for the previous anon, but I think there are non-biphobic, legitimate reasons for people to be troubled by seeing Sappho’s women-only sexuality being questioned. Abusing men have been trying to get into lesbians’ skirts for a long long time and, while I don’t think you guys would reblog something with that motivation, I’m concerned that that’s the motivation behind this questioning Sappho’s sexuality thing.
None of the mods over here are men. Even the OP of the post we reblogged isn’t a man so it’s not a bunch of men trying to abuse lesbians and get in their pants. It’s literally me a bisexual person being frustrated that not only to lesbians and gay men like to hold claim or cast out confirmed bisexual people but lesbians specifically think it’s so damaging that someone who is bisexual and not a man says “Sappho could be bi. Like all we know is she was a wlw”  In the anglosphere many wlw chose to call themselves “lesbian”, after the place Sappho lived.  Some call themselves “Sapphic”.  I don’t mean to be pedantic, I’m no scholar and y’all probably know more about this than I do about her, but … just… I want remind everyone just how important this women is to lesbians, and the way people talk about female sexuality.  While Sappho is a real woman who actually lived and deserves to have her sexuality respected and remembered accurately just like everyone deserves, why is it important to revisit what we know of this particular person’s sexuality right now, so publicly, and without presenting any evidence as a necessary part of the conversation?  Why not Cleopatra?  Or Queen Victoria of England?  Or Zora Neal Hurston?  Or Harvey Milk?  Or Plato?  Or why not discuss known female bisexual icons, like Marlene Deitrich, or Angelina Jolie?
Why do you think it’s disrespecting her sexuality when we’ve got no definitive proof either way that she was a lesbian or that she was bisexual? Yes she made a fake name probably for her husband. I made up fucking fake names for boyfriends when I was younger does that suddenly mean I have never been sexually attracted to boys/men? No it doesn’t. I’m not even 100% trying to say yes she was bisexual. I’m just saying she could have been
Why is it important? Because this was a conversation about gay men and lesbians either calling CONFIRMED bisexuals lesbians/gay/or straight but going into an absolute tizzy when someone even suggests a historical figure whose sexuality none of us can actually confirm outside of she definitely likes women being. So this isn’t about bisexual icons. It’s about the hypocritical behavior of lesbians in this moment.
I feel like I’m bending over backwards to accommodate the possibility of good intentions here because, from everything I’ve seen on this blog, y’all do have good intentions towards women.  But I just have a really hard time seeing how questioning Sappho’s sexuality isn’t lesbophobic when there’s not some compelling reason to do so (and if there a compelling reason let’s see it!)  Lesbophobia is a legitimate problem lately with Michfest ending and few lesbian-only bars available.  It’s especially important right now that we include people who not only identify as queer, but as lesbian.  Women do not need to sleep with or be romantically involved with men if they don’t want to.  Women-attracted men do not need to rewrite Sappho’s life and works to be happy and included in society just as they are, nor do we need to do so to be inclusive of bisexual women.
What was the compelling reason to claim she was a lesbian, to begin with? What’s the compelling reason for lesbians and gay men to call other bisexuals straight or gay and constantly erasing us? This entire conversation stemmed from someone coming into our inbox and acting like I was some random straight person, probably a guy, trying to force heterosexuality on a “confirmed” lesbian icon. Which none of that was fucking true, to begin with. Like I even happily said I’d do some research on the subject and then a follower who I know knows their shit spoke on the post and I was fine with the possibility that she wasn’t a lesbian. That thought had nothing to do with me hating lesbians but everything to do with lesbians getting mad about a nonbinary bisexual person saying she could have been bi while often calling actual confirmed without a shadow of a doubt bisexual people lesbians or straight. I don’t hate lesbians or gay men for that matter. I hate their actions and their hypocrisy.
Like lemme revisit part of the original post:
sappho wrote love poems for both men and women and yalls response to the idea that she might have been bi is “there was no concept of bi/gay back then!! let’s focus on the fact that she was sapphic!!” to the point where her name has become synonymous with gay and she’s called a lesbian icon and y'all only seem to have issues with “concepts” and labels when the concept/label is BI. why am i not surprised?
This behavior is garbage absolute garbage.
Lesbians have ALWAYS had visibility in this damn community. For as far back as my knowledge goes [granted it could be farther] lesbians have been visible in this community along with gay men and that same group like to gatekeep places from bisexuals, trans people, aro/ace people ect. Like I’m all here for supporting lesbians against any crap from the straights because we “are” a community but I’m not to suddenly act like they are some underrepresented part of our community that needs protecting over all others.
I never said that women have to sleep with men. I never said women have to date men. In one reblog of a post I even said a woman sleeping with a man doesn’t even automatically make her bisexual or exclude her from being a lesbian. All I have said is a) there’s a possibility that Sappho was bi and b) it’s garbage that lesbians get in a tizzy about this but don’t care when they erase bisexual people whose identities are 100% without a doubt confirmed. Nothing else you said even applies to anything I’ve said.
I am not a woman-attracted man and even if I was I still wouldn’t be coming from a place of “oooh lemme get in them pants lemme me corrupt the pure lesbian icon” it would still be about everything I’ve said. NO ONE IS RE-WRITING HER WORK. Like there are swaths of her work missing. Postulating that she could be bi doesn’t suddenly erase anything she wrote or anything we actually know for a fact about her life.
Of course lesbians don’t have to be inclusive of bisexuals. They never are.
If you do read this, thank you for reading, and thank you for your blog, I’m a woman and you’ve passed on helpful information to me in the past.  (And I’m new to tumblr, sorry if I’m not doing something right.)

Let's Go Exploring! #4
Note to readers: Let's Go Exploring is now a newsletter! Want to get our link collections and semi-coherent ramblings straight to your inbox? You're in luck! SIGN UP today!
Tumblr media
Hello readers! It has been an eerily beautiful March week (thanks climate change, I guess), our respective science projects have been full of ups and downs lately, and we are ready to sit down and scream into the internet for a while.
This week, we have been re-reading the Two Bossy Dames back-catalogues to Improve Ourselves, and came across this ask:
I used to think of myself as a creative person. Then I ended up in a field where I consume other people's awesome creative output all day, and in a city whose main industry is Big Smart Ideas. Now I'm stuck feeling like I need Big Smart Ideas and Awesome Creativity to be worthwhile, but at the same time I'm paralyzed by the fact that my crappy little initial efforts aren't going to be as great as the work I see around me every day. What's the point of putting a lot of work into something crummy? As ladies who also consume culture professionally, how do you keep that from paralyzing your own creativity?
Which had this answer:
We are not competition for these people. We are their colleagues. Their work informs ours, and (we flatter ourselves slightly), one day ours will inform theirs. There’s room for all of this and way more besides! Whatever your field of endeavor is, you’re practicing it right alongside of a bunch of other people, and yeah, you don’t need to reinvent the wheel, but we bet you could do a bang-up job refining its design and rebalancing it.
Read the whole thing OBVS but basically we want to share this advice because it helped us so SO much in even contemplating starting a science link roundup/newsletter/writing team. We aspire to Dame Sophie and Dame Margaret levels of excellence and insight! In particular, the message offered by this answer is that you have a new perspective to offer just by being your unique self. Sure, other people may be making a similar thing as whatever it is you want to be producing, but you can add to the collection of amazing work by DOING amazing work.
We are trying to add to the collection of science-themed commentary already made excellent by the likes of Ed Yong, Erin Barker, Liz Neeley, Carl Zimmer, Peter Aldhous, and many others, and trying to inject our own background, experience, and humor into it. We started this for ourselves and for a few close friends, so we don't have to continually remind ourselves that this isn't a competition, but it does occasionally bubble to the surface of our self-conscience brains. "How many twitter followers do we have today?" is a question Cas finds herself asking far too often, for example.
When that question rises up of its own accord, what she tries to ask herself instead is "What have I written today that I'm proud of?" In fact we both think this is a question that everybody should ask themselves (possibly in a form more tailored to your particular choice of extracurricular content creation) instead of focusing on how many people have thumbs-up'd or hearted their stuff lately.
The above was written entirely for our own benefit, but we hope it helps you in your own endeavor to greatness, whatever form that takes!
The Links
Crispr reads:
This week, WIRED excerpted a book called Deadliest Enemy: A War Against Killer Germs. I haven't read the book, but the WIRED article is a quick read about what we can expect from a post-antibiotic world, and a reminder about why it's hard to regulate antibiotic use. (One problem: it's difficult for doctors to refuse anxious parents a prescription they don't think is necessary, especially when it seems basically harmless and might even help.) The article opens with a story about the bacteria found in the 4-million-year-old Lechuguilla Caves, which have genes that make them resistant to common antibiotics. This is cool but scary: cool because biology, wow! Scary because it's a reminder that a lot of bacteria already have all the tools they need to escape our attempts to get rid of them. Antibiotics were a miracle, no doubt, and they changed the world, but fighting bacterial infections will continue to be a war waged in every generation. Hopefully we'll be waging that war with effective antibiotics, but you never know.
On that note: the graphic novel Surgeon X is a cool comic about post-antibiotic London. It's not perfect, and I'm going to let it play out for a few more issues before I decide whether I'm totally sucked in, but I love the timely concept and the social commentary. Read it and have Thoughts? Let me know!
Very related to antibiotics: yesterday was World Tuberculosis Day. Many of us, me included, think of TB as a disease of the past. Only Victorian ladies in novels get consumption! (Side note - did you guys know that tuberculosis shaped Victorian fashion for decades? Looking ill was totally in!) But it's definitely still a very present disease -- 1.8 MILLION people died of TB in 2015, and drug-resistance is really f***ing us over in this case. Luckily we're a lot more knowledgable about what TB is caused by and how to treat it nowadays... no more eating the liver of a wolf boiled in wine! A common treatment of the past was shipping people off to the "fresh air" -- which probably did actually help a lot in some cases. They would travel to places like Colorado (mountain air, fewer people) and live in sanatoriums, where patients lived in semi-isolated huts. This week I learned that many of those huts that were used to house TB patients in Colorado have been turned into tool sheds and art studios! So cool.
Tumblr media
And finally: Why surgeons make good artists. George Butler draws surgeons at work and talks about the similarities between art and surgery. Great artists make me jelly.
Cas reads:
Oh hey y'all. Did you need a reminder that coding is the most useful skill you can learn today or tomorrow, but preferably yesterday? Well, let WIRED give you one anyway. Why yes, WIRED, I should be learning to code in my "spare time". Many, many people have told me that programming is the path to the future. Let me complain about this for a hot second: I actually like to code. I've taken a few intro programming classes and I find it fun, satisfying, and completely unapplicable to my day-to-day work. I could 100 percent design a project in my field around messing with with the mass amounts of data available to scientists. I could 200 percent improve my job prospects by doing so. But I work and read all day in order to make sure my project is moving forward and I'll have a satisfying story by the time I'm thinking about graduating... and this doesn't require any computer skills beyond basic command of word-processing and access to the right computer tools. The thought of learning to competently code simultaneously makes me prematurely tired. To be honest, in my free time I'd rather be doing what I am right now: reading random things on the internet and writing about them.
But yes, coding is the way of the future. So: people who HAVE learned to code when they didn't need to- how did you do it? What motivated you? Was it fun? Tell me your inspiring stories! Somebody give me a good kick in the butt! (I promise I'll thank you later.)
ANYhoo, moving on: National Geographic did an article about how weird small things look. Look, phage!
Tumblr media
And speaking of phage, this is an AWESOME book about them. It's hand illustrated AND free. Download it today! Or buy it for a lot of money... I'm seriously considering it as coffee-table-topping material.
More small things: Ernst Haeckel drew a lot of microscopic animals in the 1800s/early 1900s and MAN are the prints beautiful. He also drew bigger stuff but I like his depictions of the crazy diversity of protozoa best.
Something not so small: the gender bias in academic peer review. Especially in men against women... duh.
Randomness from the week: flat-faced bunnies!  Really cold leaves! Lego tape!
And we're done! Thanks for reading, and keep exploring!

Subscription Fatigue
Subscription Management
I have active subscriptions with about a half-dozen different news & finance sites along with about a half dozen software tools, but sometimes using a VPN or web proxy across different web browsers makes logging in to all of them & clearing cookies for some paywall sites a real pain.
If you don't subscribe to any outlets then subscribing to an aggregator like Apple News+ can make a lot of sense, but it is very easy to end up with dozens of forgotten subscriptions.
Subscription fatigue is turning into subscription stress. Something alarming, guilt inducing about having 40+ reoccurring charges each month. Financial death by a thousand cuts.— Tom Goodwin (@tomfgoodwin) January 28, 2020
Winner-take-most Market Stratification
The news business is coming to resemble other tech-enabled businesses where a winner takes most. The New York Times stock, for instance, is trading at 15 year highs & they recently announced they are raising subscription prices:
The New York Times is raising the price of its digital subscription for the first time, from $15 every four weeks to $17 — from about $195 to $221 a year.
With a Trump re-election all but assured after the Russsia, Russia, Russia garbage, the party-line impeachment (less private equity plunderer Mitt Romney) & the ridiculous Iowa primary, many NYT readers will pledge their #NeverTrumpTwice dollars with the New York Times.
If you think politics looks ridiculous today, wait until you see some of the China-related ads in a half-year as the novel coronavirus spreads around the world.
Outside of a few core winners, the news business online has been so brutal that even Warren Buffett is now a seller. As the economics get uglier news sites get more extreme with ad placements, user data sales, and pushing subscriptions. Some of these aggressive monetization efforts make otherwise respectable news outlets look like part of a very downmarket subset of the web.
Users Fight Back
Users have thus adopted to blocking ads & are also starting to ramp up blocking paywall notifications.
Some of the most popular browser extensions are ad blockers & tracking blockers like Adblock Plus, Ghostery & Privacy Badger.
Apple has made tracking their users across sites harder with their Intelligent Tracking Prevention, causing iPhone ad rates to plummet: "The allure of a Safari user in an auction has plummeted," Rubicon Project CEO Michael Barrett told the publication. "There's no easy ability to ID a user."
The Opera web browser comes with an ad blocker baked in.
Mozilla is also pushing to protect user privacy in Firefox.
Google recently announced they will stop supporting third party cookies in Chrome in the next couple years. Those who invested into adopting AMP will have to invest into making yet more technical changes to manage paywalls on AMP pages.
Each additional layer of technological complexity is another cost center publishers have to fund, often through making the user experience of their sites worse, which in turn makes their own sites less differentiated & inferior to the copies they have left across the web (via AMP, via Facebook Instant Articles, syndication in Apple News or on various portal sites like MSN or Yahoo!).
A Web Browser For Every Season
Google Chrome is spyware, so I won't recommend installing that.
Not good enough for you? Not a direct enough corollary? How about this? Also out today: https://t.co/6dUWCCEyii Google has a backdoor to track individual Chrome users by installation ID.Even GG's denial admits pieces of the same complaints y'all had about Jumpshot last week! pic.twitter.com/Km2mQfOgbJ— Rand Fishkin (@randfish) February 4, 2020
Here Google's official guide on how to remove the spyware.
The easiest & most basic solution which works across many sites using metered paywalls is to have multiple web browsers installed on your computer. Have a couple browsers which are used exclusively for reading news articles when they won't show up in your main browser & set those web browsers to delete cookies on close. Or open the browsers in private mode and search for the URL of the page from Google to see if that allows access.
If you like Firefox there are other iterations from other players like Pale Moon, Comodo IceDragon or Waterfox using their core.
If you like Google Chrome then Chromium is the parallel version of it without the spyware baked in. The Chromium project is also the underlying source used to build about a dozen other web browsers including: Opera, Vivaldi, Brave, Cilqz, Blisk, Comodo Dragon, SRWare Iron, Yandex Browser & many others. Even Microsoft recently switched their Edge browser to being powered by the Chromium project. The browsers based on the Chromium store allow you to install extensions from the Chrome web store.
Some web browsers monetize users by setting affiliate links on the home screen and/or by selling the default search engine recommendation. You can change those once and they'll typically stick with whatever settings you use.
For some browsers I use for regular day to day web use I set them up to continue session on restart, and I have a session manager plugin like this one for Firefox or this one for Chromium-based browsers. For browsers which are used exclusively for reading paywall blocked articles I set them up to clear cookies on restart.
Bypassing Paywalls
There are a couple solid web browser plugins built specifically for bypassing paywalls.
Academic Journals
Unpaywall is an open database of around 25,000,000 free scholarly articles. They provide extensions for Firefox and Chromium based web browsers on their website.
News Articles
There is also one for news publications called bypass paywalls.
Mozilla Firefox: To install the Firefox version go here.
Chrome-like web browsers: To install the Chrome version of the extension in Opera or Chromium or Microsoft Edge you can download the extension here, enter developer mode inside the extensions area of your web browser & install extension. To turn developer mode on, open up the drop down menu for the browser, click on extensions to go to the extension management area, and then slide the "Developer mode" button to the right so it is blue.
Regional Blocking
If you travel internationally some websites like YouTube or Twitter or news sites will have portions of their content restricted to only showing in some geographic regions. This can be especially true for new sports content and some music.
These can be bypassed by using a VPN service like NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Witopia or IPVanish. Some VPN providers also sell pre-configured routers. If you buy a pre-configured router you can use an ethernet switch or wifi to switch back and forth between the regular router and the VPN router.
You can also buy web proxies & enter them into the Foxy Proxy web browser extension (Firefox or Chromium-compatible) with different browsers set to default to different country locations, making it easier to see what the search results show in different countries & cities quickly.
If you use a variety of web proxies you can configure some of them to work automatically in an open source rank tracking tool like Serposcope.
The Future of Journalism
I think the future of news is going to be a lot more sites like Ben Thompson's Stratechery or Jessica Lessin's TheInformation & far fewer broad/horizontal news organizations. Things are moving toward the 1,000 true fans or perhaps 100 true fans model:
This represents a move away from the traditional donation model—in which users pay to benefit the creator—to a value model, in which users are willing to pay more for something that benefits themselves. What was traditionally dubbed “self-help” now exists under the umbrella of “wellness.” People are willing to pay more for exclusive, ROI-positive services that are constructive in their lives, whether it’s related to health, finances, education, or work. In the offline world, people are accustomed to hiring experts across verticals
A friend of mine named Terry Godier launched a conversion-oriented email newsletter named Conversion Gold which has done quite well right out of the gate, leading him to launch IndieMailer, a community for paid newsletter creators.
The model which seems to be working well for those sorts of news sites is...
stick to a tight topic range
publish regularly at a somewhat decent frequency like daily or weekly, though have a strong preference to quality & originality over quantity
have a single author or a small core team which does most the writing and expand editorial hiring slowly
offer original insights & much more depth of coverage than you would typically find in the mainstream news
Rely on Wordpress or a low-cost CMS & billing technology partner like Substack, Memberful, sell on a marketplace like Udemy, Podia or Teachable, or if they have a bit more technical chops they can install aMember on their own server. One of the biggest mistakes I made when I opened up a membership site about a decade back was hand rolling custom code for memberhsip management. At one point we shut down the membership site for a while in order to allow us to rip out all that custom code & replace it with aMember.
Accept user comments on pieces or integrate a user forum using something like Discord on a subdomain or a custom Slack channel. Highlight or feature the best comments. Update readers to new features via email.
Invest much more into obtaining unique data & sources to deliver new insights without spending aggressively to syndicate onto other platforms using graphical content layouts which would require significant design, maintenance & updating expenses
Heavily differentiate your perspective from other sources
maintain a low technological maintenance overhead
low cost monthly subscription with a solid discount for annual pre-payment
instead of using a metered paywall, set some content to require payment to read & periodically publish full-feature free content (perhaps weekly) to keep up awareness of the offering in the broader public to help offset churn.
Some also work across multiple formats with complimentary offerings. The Ringer has done well with podcasts & Stratechery also has the Exponent podcast.
There are a number of other successful online-only news subscription sites like TheAthletic & Bill Bishop's Sinocism newsletter about China, but I haven't subscribed to them yet. Many people support a wide range of projects on platforms like Patreon & sites like MasterClass with an all-you-can-eat subscription will also make paying for online content far more common..

So the people 4900 humans were mutilated
They were cut up and dismembered while alive.
Alex says you want to know what i think.
I don't want to.
Because what i know is this is the tip of the iceberg. What you saw today was the ones that are normal.
There are going to be worse cases that will be surfaced.
What you saw today was mild.
What i feel is irrelevant. I don't have the time not opportunity to reflect and feel about those cases
You know how i feel about human trafficking. You know how i feel about abuse. You know how i feel about people harming humans.
I should not have to explain how i feel.
You need to know it will be worse.
14000 estimated... Only 4900 had physical distortions you could see. The rest were metaphysical and under the skin. Under their clothes.
The horrific procedures these humans suffered courageously only to live in pure Hell...
I will not minimize the suffering of any human.
However the physical mutilation of what you will see in the future is much greater. Frankenstein doesn't even cover it.
You'll see people with all skin removed. All bones removed and still expected to work. People with exposed brain tissue. Their hair growing out of their brain because they have no skull.
I've talked to most and minimized most of their pain and blessed the facilities they were in so they could not feel harm nor new victims if they were taken in.
They did not want to surface to land until the time was ready. Because they are horrifically disfigured.
They did not want a full heal. Nor did they want desth nor removal.
They wanted to be safe and allowed to present their bodies to you. The rest of the world.
To know why to tell you how this happened to them.
Many have lived in these conditions for over 200 years. Hidden. We closed as many off to predators as well could by feining their deaths. By their bodies laying on top of each other in open door ways. And me screaming they were dead. So we were able to close the labs for the time being.
Sneak food to the victims through another pathway.
S0 for 200 years they have waited to tell you all how lucky you are to only have been kidnapped. To only have been raped. To only have lost your jobs and forced to stand 4 feet away from each other.
Some but not all want a full heal.
So the zombie apocalypse we have had on tv and y'all dressed up for on Halloween -- it was for them. To tell them they would be accepted on the top soil of the Eaerth, as they are.
Because they wanted to know they would be safe and unharmed further. And I wanted them to know they would be loved.
Out in Corsicana Texas is where we will find most. Under ground in a lab North West of the city.
It is requested you proof the existence. A newspaper or date on phone or some way of proving these people are for real being rescued this day and age in 2020 AD e.
Only previously selected elite will attend the
What I feel is grief. And sadness.
2/3 want to come to the surface of the Earth to simply die. Once and for all.
But we won't allow that. Their shame. Their wanting to hide their bodies. They want to protect what has been done to them
They want to hide in shame and anxiety for what abuse they suffered
They do not want to stand tall and proud and say "i am human and I have a right to live"
They want to finally say to all of us "I am not as good as you and I will die before you to prove it so"
I could cry all day for my broken heart for them.
And so instead in my usual fashion i am gonna slap their fucking face and say wake up beasts. I fucking love you. And you're not dying because you don't like the mirror.
And so we have a whole thing organized and planned for two days.
They do normal shit although they look like Hell. Potato sack races and Warrior training all kinds of shit.
So we will have Team Elite compete with The Underground Victims.
I think the Elite Military will fail. I think this because they train to save other's lives while the underground their own and others and they know the horrific things that can happen.
So when y'all are allowing Evil to be saved
Our 200 plus year old humans in hibernation under ground will come out and show you why you cannot EVER allow that to happen again.
I wrote in dramatics. But reality is horrifying.
Several other mutilated and severely damaged "corpse" will fly in. Some from right here in New Mexico.
Trees will build invisible walls to prevent others from trying to get in. At times they will be visible and will block the view. Especially for frightened children that may have came to look.
There are 3,475 that are just over 200 years old. They wanted to come out when it was safe from aliens
I assure it is not. However this morning tree asked if they were ready to surface. They said no..
Tree said "fuck shit you're coming out. I don't wanna hear youre sorry we have fun and games planned"
Slowly their fear disintegrated into acceptance.
They were told if they lost at the games and they would -- then they would be able to die freely for eternity's sake.
They were happy to never have to live again.
I will win. That is all I have to say.
So play the hardest. Play the best. Don't give pity to another team. Both sides kick ass.
We have Team Mutilated like you saw today. We have Team Mutilation. We have Team Death and Team Elite.
So we are doing this Olympic style... But each team gets a trophy... So track If Team Mutilation doesn't come running across finish until they are actually #8 their trophy will represent that. If they're last place then they are.
So each team will get placed. And then their overall team placement will be getting a trophy at Diamond. Gold. Titanium Steel and copper.
Of course we will have the actual winner list so if Team Elite beat at the first five levels. It will be recorded.
The point is. Humans have survived in shame for 200 years. Only for you to witness their beings and then die.
So i want them to see while they are some of the worst -- they are not the only. And while our strongest and kindest military competes they will lose because they don't have 200 years of physical training. They don't have 200 plus years of physical memory. They haven't spent 200 years paying attention how their body is or works
I expect Team Death to win at all categories except a small handful.
That is why i said i win. Because i want them to try and i want them to prove to us that live only 40 to 100 years and were all shriveled up in wheelchairs why the point is to survive for eternity. I need them to show us the difference in their physical blessings and a regular human being.
They agreed to but also said they wanted to die.
So y'all believe in miracles. I have more than one planned. They don't have phones. But i talked about it the other day. The P-word and 4 words in the thesaurus.
I am hoping they feel love and acceptance and finally actual pride in the first time in over 50 years.
Not just pride. But pride in their human bodies.
That in itself is a miracle.
And then I can perform more.
And if they don't want to try to live... I'll ask them if they want to if they got 5 thesaurus words some of y'all looked up... And then we will magic them up.
Like I said. I will win.
I say me perform -- my associates the Trees will actually. We have had a lot of practice and discussion.
Matt Hagan is one of the Zulululu aliens which performed abortions then sewed the babies to the outer limbs or the parents So "they always hold their children" and quite a few more grotesque things.
Remember while they don't look human, they are. So if you watch the games live don't cheer for their deformities but what they can do despite them.
So you can say "man look at that 13 armed dude go!! Omg he has 13 arms how amazing is that" because he's juggling or catching frisbees and playing with 9 other people and not missing one. You applaud the skill they now have not the pain they suffer. In my example i pointed out the dude has 13 arms then said what he was doing was amazing.
I did not use proper punctuation. Just like verbalization doesn't either..
So don't accuse any one in your house of making the injuries they sustained insignificant.
The point is to show off their skill and survival DESPITE what the bastards did to them.
So even if your kid says "I wish I had 13 arms" they're not dismissing how fucking horrific it is.
They are saying "wow that guy is my hero"
"I'm jealous. The things I could do like him"
Let the people in your house and home have freedom of expression. Even if you don't understand what the fuck they are saying or where it comes from.
I'd rather hear envy than disgust. So would they.
Yes it will freak the fuck out of you. So the goal is to find one that fascinates you. Or you feel comfortable looking at.
There are some that honestly always freaked me out and they would say "see? How can we go back to our lives when you are one of the nicest and even you can't stand to see or touch them?"
"Because Alex is afraid of my favorite and I'm afraid of his favorite"
"It won't never work then. We can't allow people in fear of us. Its just not right. We will just stay here then for all of eternity"
So the delicate gifts our Eaerth has is these humans.
View them as your schoolmates and best friends.
Of course we will heal them and tattoo their old nemises of themselves on their skin. They will choose. It will be painless. Like a painting with paint. Liquid regular paint.
There are 13000 participants. Only 1/3 will actively be in the games.
While the spectators are waiting my children 9 of them and likely 10 I have here in the belly will apply beautification to those who wish to survive.
Slowly the stands occupants will change to the most beautiful humans you have ever seen in your entire lives.
So one active jogger in a game of soccer will look up to see his wife. He's decided to die. She has not. And he won't find her. Because she's too beautiful. It will change his whole world, his whole mind.
"Oh well I'm gonna need to be handsome then" will say the man with a nose surgically removed and placed upside down with hands from his armpits and no arms. No neck. No throat. No upper jaw. He is one of my easy "but what am I gonna do with these? My wings?" That is what his wife calls his hands.
She feeds him she has his arms wrapped around her throat. But she's mostly in tact. Her nose is also turned upside down and her ears. Her teeth are flipped out. They used plates to push them out opposite how we use teeth braces.
"Its pretty horrific. But we are going. I got strong legs and skill" that is what he says. So i developed the games with him. And some others.
Long long time ago. They did not want the rules to be relaxed for them. They said they would refuse to play if they thought we took it easy on them.
Just for the way they look. They say Red Bull gives you wings. He truly has them. You'll see an interview with him. He can't talk very well at all it is very very muffled like he's under water or has a pillow shoved in his face because he's pissed off his wife again. ;)
So he will show you all what has happened to him. He has his wrists attached in his arm pits so he can rotate his hands.
Y'all will probably want more than 1 tv per room you watch in so you can see their glamor upgrade and the games and a 3rd if you wanna see how they live and function in the home.
I suggest if you can borrow tv from the bedrooms and line them up in the living room or den.
Or use a big screen/projector. So you can see more than one channel at once.
Volume I suggest the in home because they will speak there. And you can hear them.
Glamour my girls will announce their names and dysfunctions and then glamor up. So that should be on closed caption so you can read as well as sports
But I totally challenge you to volume on all 3.
I would sports lowest. Glamor mid and home life up most.
If you practice fine tuning your ears you can hear all 3 perfectly.
Become a freak like me.
So what do i feel? Excited and happy. I feel love.
Because there is a future. And I am sure we can convince the rest to have one too.
Hashtag Freak in social media to show support.
Please.
