I’m sure it’s been said but I am loving how they’ve presented Bathena as a couple this season

Bobby especially is so incredible. He’s funny and he’s supportive (investigating Lola & Norman with Athena) and he’s clearly so very comfortable and confident in his relationship.

He calmly but firmly let’s Athena know that he sees what she’s doing (avoiding him for whatever reason) and he doesn’t appreciate it and isn’t gonna let it go, but also apologizes if he’s been pushy about cruise activities and works to find a compromise so they can spend time together. It’s clear that they are a stable and established couple who have been together for a while, know each other well, and don’t think a disagreement is the be-all end-all of their relationship !

Bobby being like ‘you’ve never had a migraine last less than three days’! Like! He knows her!!!

And despite their clear issues going on, they’re slowly starting to discuss it. They’re not mean or angry or raising voices. It’s so respectful and such a ‘whatever is going on, we’ll get through it as a team’ dynamic.

How many times do I have to learn the lesson that I should start the story when the story starts instead of trying to tack on introductory worldbuilding?

Seriously. My instincts about when to start the story are almost never wrong. But I always assume the first scene in my imagination requires set-up that people outside of my imagination don't have. So I tack on an intro to set the mood and to set up the plot and characters and world. And it's boring. When I should have just started where I wanted to start so I could weave explanations into a scene where things are actually happening.

#adventures in writing #i decided to tackle that goose girl retelling i came up with earlier this summer #(the one that was supposed to be a simple short version of a fairy tale) #(but i got too attached to it and became paralyzed by the need to do it right) #it turned out that one big hurdle was the lack of names #so i finally just picked some and went with it #and then when it came to starting the story i thought that i needed to show how the mc feels lost and ashamed by her fall #and explain that she had a talking horse and it's dead now and all that complicated stuff #and then i remembered writing 'a day late' where i made sure the story started with the character *doing* something #which is a decent lesson but it wasn't quite enough here #the really important lesson i should have learned from 'a day late' is that you shouldn't start the story too early #i had tried a meandering scene of beatrice arriving at the castle and it was boring #and i solved the problem by starting partway through her frantic search #and then wove in the explanations about her situation #which is exactly what needs to happen with this goose girl story #i just need to start with her doing something and then weave in all the exposition bit by bit #start where i'd initially wanted to start and let the readers figure out all the backstory as i slowly reveal it #i feel like i've repeated myself five times so i'll stop talking now

Resisting the urge to carve myself a distaff from one of the evergreen boughs ive dragged home and learn medieval in-hand distaff spinning. Do i need to do any of this ? No. Am i happy with supported spinning ? Yes ! Am i probably gonna do it anyway ? ... also yes

#we talk a lot about the rabbit hole of fiber arts #but i dont think we talk enough about the rabbit hole of different spinning tools and techniques... #so far id say ive gotten proficient in drop spindling wheel spinning and supported spinning with russian style spindles #really want to get into either tahklis or charkah wheels #bc im gonna be visiting my wonderful fiancé in india and hes still gonna have work for most if not all of the time im there #so my plan is to spin a LOT. hoping to get really proficient in cotton spinning bc ive always really sucked at that #and then i really wanna learn medieval style spinning as well #if i was an academic i could easily see myself devoting my life to writing a book about spinning tools through the ages #i am so endlessly fascinated by it #but also really bad at research and have a pretty crippling case of dyslexia #i wanna try. all the tools #it always feels like the way to get closer to the past is to spin like them #since that has been THE constant human activity since quite possibly pre-homo sapiens times #i dont know how much cloth the neanderthals wove or if they were more inclined to use animal skins #but we do know they made yarn and they were good at it #sadly my hands cant do cordage. fucks em up in about a minute flat #but iirc we've found stone spindle whorls which may have been used for spinning #stone whorls can also be used for hand drills and fire starters and things like that so idk #anyway. i just want to know SO badly #spinning

it's absolutely ridiculous that immigrant/settler children of the Americas don't learn about the native tribes of the land that they live on. no history is taught about how they live/d, like architecture (didn't learn shit about the ruins near me), daily life pre-colonisation, beliefs, prominent figures, etc. i BARELY learned about the pima-maricopa tribes and that's only because i went to a montessori school and not a public one. and that was a bit less than a month of being taught 😐

and like at first glance mando armor all looks strikingly similar but then you look closer and you realize theres so much variation like even just in the helmet designs you have different little variations in the visor shape, the fucking "cheek indent" shape, the forehead, the ear pieces, etc and then it comes down to like well how much of that can be personal customization, and then what can you potentially say about the person inhabiting the armor by just the armor design? if the helmet is their face, then what does the helmet portray about their personality? but then i also love the idea of like actual mandalorian families who pass on certain armor characteristics like maybe this one family carries on this one specific visor shape or whatever, so despite it being armor you can still somehow see familial resemblance between them. idk i just think its neat. lol
