Real big fan of robots and monsters and aliens btw in case u couldn't tell.

And a trope I Hate is forced humanization, in general. If a non human character is supposed to become connected to humankind, then fine. It's not atrocious on it's own. I don't care.

What I do care about is when they're belittled for not being "human enough" in a "weird way". Like, yeah, maybe the alien that doesn't celebrate birthdays is strange to the protagonist. They don't have to call them out on it. The alien doesn't have to be seen at the end celebrating their birthday to solidify how human they've become.

If you want it to happen have it happen gradually. Have them become curious about it, and find out they actually like the customs they're not used to yet. Aliens finding pleasure in a playground, monsters enjoying food they'd never gotten to taste before, and robots discovering they genuinely like watching TV. Whatever!

Just work around their differences, make it be gradual, and not born from the main, human cast making fun of them or pointing out how weird they are for not liking X thing. And for the love of god, don't make "Becoming Human uwu" the center of their story. It's so... Heartbreaking. Bleak, even.

I did it guys I did it I made a Digital Circus OC!

Meet Quintin! (I might change the name later, I’m not sure.) He’s a tin soldier, though there also seems to be some nutcracker or puppet influence, so I dunno. They haven’t been there nearly as long as Kinger, but they’re also not too recent of an addition to the Circus.

(How can digital paint flake off of digital tin? Who knows?) (This is literally my first time drawing Quintin. Hopefully he’ll start looking more unique over time. Maybe I should try a different color scheme?)

Quintin believes that everyone in the Digital Circus was put there as a punishment for their actions in their previous lives. Somehow Quintin got the idea that they were all horrible, dangerous people in the real world, and were put in the little world of the circus as a kind of colorful prison cell, to keep them safely away from other people.

The Circus, with its amnesia and new identities, is meant to give them a change to reset, to become decent people that deserve to reenter society. The idyllic, childish world is one (supposedly) free of real hate and danger, to adjust them all to a kind and cheerful way of existing, and the adventures are meant to gauge their progress, their cooperation and attitude, and see when they’re ready to leave.

If they fail, returning to their previous “bad behavior,” they descend into monsters and are not given another chance. (Quintin believes they all deserved their abstraction, for not trying hard enough.) If they “change their ways,” they are allowed to leave. In theory. No one has ever done this yet… it just speaks to how irredeemable they all are. But Quintin is determined to be worthy. Determined to be the first to escape by making no attempt to, questioning nothing and playing along with it all.

The Digital Circus is a game. Quintin believes there is a way to win.

(And yes, I know, I think people already have theories like this. So sue me.)

As a non-magic user, they can’t help but be a bit bitter about their supposed lack of innate magic abilities, and instead of stewing in such horrid horrid feelings, has chosen to shove it all aside and pretend magic doesn’t exist to cope asdfkjn. (It’s more complex than that) Listen, he’s so unbothered by it!!

How specifically does Lu Ten survive in the au?

The short answer: his betrothed.

The long answer: in this au, Lu Ten is betrothed at quite a young age to Makei, a noble woman's only daughter. They're both nonbenders, who both train separately to be equally deadly (Lu Ten under Piandao, and Makei under a retired Yuyan archer by the name of Izuki) and are probably each others only real friend at court, just due to the cutthroat nature of the court.

They both go to the siege of Ba Sing Se, probably a year into it, Lu Ten is an officer and Makei is a healer. They are very quickly disenfranchised with the whole idea of The War.

This is mostly because they were both very lonely children, Lu Ten moreso. When Lu was little, his mother was dead, his father was off at war more often than not and there were very few people who were consistently around him (Ursa would be around a bit but since Ozai does not want to be around him, even that's limited), but he made his loneliness better by basically saying that Winning The War will make it all better.

Newsflash: the war sucks and when fighting it begins to feel entirely pointless, and Lu Ten is very quickly like...oh. My childhood just sucked for No Reason.

(Listen, Iroh loved his son but I am of the firm belief that their relationship was not an easy one)

And then, Iroh dies on the front lines. Maybe Lu Ten should have been the one to die then - he certainly came close - but Makei is a skilled healer who makes sure he pulls through. But Lu Ten is neither the leader his father was nor someone who wants to be, and the siege is called off.

Still, he's angry and bitter and has a burning hatred for the war for taking his father from him in so many ways (and, later, when he's spent time among the earth kingdom, he'll be angry for them too), and when he returns to the palace, he does not exactly go along with everything Ozai has to say...

By which I mean he does multiple kidnappings but that's another post.

#Makei is the adaptation of an older oc #also I had feelings about Lu Ten and parallels to his mother #also about loneliness it's a really big theme in this #Lu Ten's mother was lonely for the arranged marriage she got put in and then she died lonely only a few hours after having Lu #and then Lu Ten has all these years of built up emotional neglect that really took it's toll #and without having the friend there that Makei is he would have thrown himself into the war effort to get the emotional acknowledgement #he wants #but because he has had that he isn't quite so enthusiastic in his war attempts and so sees the horror a bit easier #which caves in his entire paper thin worldview very quickly #Lu Ten #OC: Makei #Fae's OCs #Lu Ten Lives AU #AtLA #Ask #Anonymous #god have I had so many ideas for this au tonight #please ask me more questions :)

I owe you a massive thank you for this one because this is how I learned Qweck, Servant of Irori on the Path to Perfection, has a very hard time not causing a scene when someone she respects has Wrong Opinions at a family gathering, and I love that flaw so much.

Qweck sighs. "Did Giliys put you up to this? Nevermind. Look. I like Mino - no, really, I do. She is disciplined and passionate and generally follows her conscience. Generally. And of course I respect her refusal to cling to unearned abyssal power, regardless of how the situation ended. But we can't seem to have a conversation without arguing. I think it's because we seem to have similar values, but we actually disagree fundamentally on some very key points of our respective worldviews. So one of us will say something assuming it's uncontroversial, and then the other will disagree vehemently, and then it just devolves from there.

"An example? Well, she made a comment once about the ultimate 'self-obsolescence' of the hellknights. The hellknights, she claims, are ultimately working for a world where they're unnecessary, and will disband once that world is achieved. I think that's nonsense - institutions like the hellknights are self-perpetuating, not self-obsolescent - but of course I had the good sense not to say so. Instead I just said that world she envisions isn't achievable as long as the hellknights continue perpetuating the cycles of violence that make her feel their existence is necessary. From there it turned into an argument about what hellknights actually do and whether caring for the foundlings they indoctrinate and groom for recruitment outweighs routinely employing torture, slavery, and terror tactics to achieve their ends." She clears her throat. "Just to be clear: I did not know she had ever worked with foundlings at that point, and I would never have pressed the point so hard if I had. We've had other disagreements, but I think you get the idea.

"It's unfortunate - like I said, I like her. I have tremendous respect for anyone who has the wisdom not to cling to unearned power, and the fact that she was able to recover from her ordeal with the demons while also running a crusade - I am a cleric of Irori. Of course I admire the strength of will that took. Unfortunately neither of us shy away from speaking our minds, and our minds are apparently ideologically opposed."

again learning anything about how the chantry and mages interact from alistair, in a mahariel origin, who has presumably had limited interactions with humans (dialogue in the intro indicates you did not go to the village for trading with shems) is insane. "what's a templar" and alistair describes them specifically as hunting and killing mages. that the chantry wants to control them because they're dangerous. so far things are not boding well for nomaris.
