Haha yessss I love that you recommended TDP! I’ve actually seen it already and I really enjoyed the first three seasons. Rayla x Callum is such an adorable enemies to friends to lovers ship and of course I loveee Amaya x Janai 🥰 I really appreciate all of the LGBTQ+ rep in the show in general.

Sadly, idk what happened (maybe it was the long hiatus?), but seasons 4 and 5 were a huge downgrade from seasons 1-3 in my opinion. There have been so many odd writing choices, especially for Callum and Rayla as characters, and while I appreciate how dark the last season could get, it oftentimes felt like tonal whiplash due to the amount of silliness that would precede certain episodes/scenes. There’s just not a great tonal balance anymore, and the humor has felt off. I also feel like the animation doesn’t have as much life and expression in it as it used to?

Idk, I’m hoping the next two seasons will be better, because I miss the overall vibe of TDP s1-3. I’d be curious to hear what you think of the most recent seasons! :)

P.S. I reallyyyy want them to give Soren a bf. It’s what he deserves. Perhaps Corvus? 👀

If you want to…Zukka! And Ursa/June 👀 (yes I really just want you to say more about them)

Hello friend!

Let's rant about Zukka for a moment, shall we?

I have a lot of issues with the ship itself, one of them simply being that I don't see the chemistry. Sokka liked Zuko for a total of seven episodes in the series and even then was using him as a punching bag most of the time. Most of their conversations are about their respective girlfriends. There are some ships that I genuinely dislike that are more believable and have more of a canon basis than Zukka. They should have stayed a rarepair.

But the main grievance I take with Zukka is with the shippers themselves.

This doesn't go for all Zukka shippers of course, but I feel like a lot of it is rooted in misogyny and the pairing of two mostly traditionally masculine, conventionally attractive men which happens a lot in fandom. As a result of this, they end up projecting A LOT of Aang's traits onto Zuko or Katara's traits onto Sokka and exalt Zuko and Sokka as the most progressive characters when Aang is the least gender conforming and Katara is the feminist heroine of the story. The people they're shipping simply aren't Zuko and Sokka in any capacity. And it's super frustrating how these shallow, fabricated versions of genuinely great, well-written characters have become so pervasive in the fandom. Zuko is not a pathetic femboy who needs a 'manly man' to take care of him. This, coupled with the spicy hot headcanon that 'Zuko taught Sokka how to read', offers a small insight into the racist takes that are unfortunately and uncomfortably popular among Zukka shippers.

They flood the tags and saturate every inch of the fandom even where they aren't invited. They have the mentality of 'our ship has explicit canon proof and if you don't like it, you're homophobic' and were the ones who started the 'Katara is a homophobe' headcanon. (Which a lot of them have backpedaled on and called a joke, but there are like pages of meta dedicated to it on tumblr.) I've seen them blame the writers of 'queerbaiting' them, and the false crusading for gay rights really bothers me.

Zukka shippers also HATE Jet, and there are a lot of Zukka fics that make Jet Zuko's abusive ex for no other reason other than there is canon evidence that Jet possibly had a crush on Zuko and Jetko was the main mlm Zuko ship before Zukka took over. They tend to sideline or demonize Mai, making her a surrogate for Zuko and Sokka so that they can have a kid or 'shipping' Mailee or [insert interchangeable wlw ship here] just to get her out of the way. They similarly sideline Aang and have a very limited understanding of his character, assigning significant Zukaang moments to Zukka instead (ie interactions with the Blue Spirit and rainbow fire).

So yeah, I generally really dislike Zukka sans a handful of shippers who liked them before the ATLA Renaissance and respect the fact that Zukka was only ever meant to be a fun lil crackship.

MOVING ON

Ursa x June is my next big brain venture! I'm so excited to write about them, and the possibilities are endless. I am always a sucker for reluctant travel companions falling in love. The tension, the yearning, the close proximities... I can't get enough of it! And I think June would offer and represent this sense of freedom, individuality, and authority that Ursa ached for growing up under certain restrictions and expectations. And June being Zuko's stepmom is honestly the funniest shit ever.

1. What made you ship it? Ummmm I saw some poly art about Maiko and Kataang just like... switching partners so it was Maitara and Zukaang and kinda being an OT4 and I just was like... I dig it. (It was something like “oh shit our boyfriends are kissing” and then later “was anyone gonna tell me our girlfriends started dating?”)

2. What is your favorite thing about the ship? Hmm. I just love seeing some badass wlw in love ya’know? Similar to my MaiAang post, I think Katara could help Mai learn how to express her emotions better. And Mai would just help Katara fully destroy the patriarchy LMAO But no from a romantic standpoint, I think Mai could have the maturity that Katara would need in a relationship. She needs someone who can be serious and listen to her.

3. What is an unpopular opinion you have on the ship? I think it’s very unlikely to have an outcome that could be canon compliant. You know what I mean? Like I don’t really see a way of this realistically happening in universe. (Which can probably be said for a lot of ships 😂)

Favorite story you’ve written so far: i am going to cheat and say my favorite fics i’ve written so far are the three in my why’d you have to go and make things so complicated? series. here’s the series “summary”:

A series of (mostly) Flash Thompson-centric fics set in a canon-divergent AU beginning after Spider-Man: Homecoming. Niche headcanons*, one-sided rivals to friends (to lovers), and Flash Thompson appreciation abound!

basically, it’s 50k worth of fics (so far) that serve as a testament to how much i love mcu flash thompson 🥺💛 he deserves the world!!

Fic you were nervous to post: i was pretty nervous to post one of my more recent fics, actually! the fic is called Is This Love?, and i was nervous for a few different reasons:

- it’s half sambucky, which was fine bc sambucky is popular lmao, but it’s also half sarahmay, which is a sapphic rarepair i came up with between sarah wilson and may parker. the mcu fandom has a heavy preference for mlm pairings, so i was nervous by virtue of the fic being partially wlw-centric, but it all ended up being fine! i have converted so many people to sarahmay 😤

- the fic also features my demiromantic!sam headcanon. i myself am aspec but (maybe) not demiromantic, so i wanted my portrayal to be respectful, and as such i was nervous despite everything i’d looked into prior to writing and posting the fic, lol

- it’s a multichap. multichaps make me nervous solely because they are multiple chapters. adds stressTM 😂

How do you choose your titles: song lyrics, randomly coming up with them, a specific line/word used in the fic, and brainstorming with friends are probably the main ways!

Do you outline: sure do 😤 it varies from fic to fic, so some outlines are a detailed list of events in the appropriate order, while others are a more general idea of “here’s stuff i want to include,” lol. generally speaking, though, i always try to go in with some sort of plan!

Complete: all of my recent fics are complete! (although that’s bc i primarily write oneshots 😂) on ao3, i think i only have one fic that’s truly incomplete. (oneshot collections are a weird in-between, because they essentially are always complete unless i feel like adding to them.) on ffn, though, i have four incomplete fics, three of which are from middle school. i don’t think they will ever be finished 😩

Do you accept prompts: technically, yes! but my policy is that i am under no obligation to write any of them. i write fanfic for fun and as a stress reliever, so if im not inspired by a prompt, i am not going to stress myself out trying to write for it, lol

Upcoming story you’re most excited to write about: i actually just finished writing this story today (by hand, it’s not typed yet lmao), but im gonna let it count for this question anyways! it is probably the most self-indulgent fic i’ve ever written: a monk and medium crossover. that’s right, two fandoms absolutely no one in the world cares about but me. i wrote this fic solely bc it was something i wanted to read 😂 it is - if i counted correctly - 78 1/2 pages long, which is probably in the range of 30-35k words? once i type it up (in like,, december lmao) i’ll have more specifics, although the “patching” that occurs when i type handwritten drafts could push the word count closer to 40k. but who knows? time will tell!

anyways, im just so excited about this fic bc it has so many things i like lmaooo (examples: allison whump, joe x allison content, sharona being her wonderful self, and what i hope is an interesting murder mystery!)

My feelings and ratings on all the big ships, ie, something I will most definitely regret later:

Kataang: Sweet. Adorbs. Is canon and I accept and respect it as such, BUT I totally see and respect the argument that Katara would be better off with someone named Zuko who can match her tenacity. 9/10

Zutara: Lovely. I'm a sucker for narrative parallels and they have that in spades. It was almost canon (some of the writers and VAs wanted it) and I wouldn't have been upset had that been the case. 8/10

Zukka: Awesome. Bromance turned romance is my jam. Satisfies my craving for mlm fic in the fandom. Their personalities mesh well imo, even though it's not remotely canon and some of the fanbase gets them a little too ooc for my liking. 7/10

Maiko: Perfection! Childhood sweethearts ftw here. Canon ship. I love the goth/emo solidarity. Mai don't put up with Zuko's bs and he knows and respects that about her. Give me all of it! 11/10

Mailee: Another childhood sweethearts scenario here, even though it's not remotely canon. Opposites attract trope ftw. Satisfies my craving for wlw content in the fandom. 7/10

Maizula: Yes, Azula is a badass lesbian. But unless the ship comes with a well-written, novel-length redemption arc for Azula, I can't get in the headspace to ship it in any capacity. Kudos to you if you can. Enjoy your ship. 3/10

Tyzula: See above. 3/10

Azula/Therapy: It might seem like I'm just shitting on Azula here, and honestly I'm not. I just think Azula needs to be built back up from her broken down state before she can be ready for a relationship. 100/10

Zukaang: Once again with the amazing narrative parallels, and I absolutely see the appeal. Infinite "capturing the Avatar" jokes. I just personally don't FEEL it in a way I can't really explain. 5/10

Suka: Couples goals. Sokka moving on from lost love to be happy again with Suki is * chef's kiss * Not to mention the fact that Suki gave Sokka his first cup of respect women juice and he's been chugging it ever since. Canon ship. They are so sappy and cute I smile like a moron when they have a scene together. 10/10

Tokka: I'm SO torn here bc on one hand it's freaking adorable, on the other hand I feel like little aromantic (that's how I HC her) Toph with her platonic crush on Sokka would get overwhelmed by Sokka's hopeless romanticism and Sokka would be left feeling unfulfilled (NOT saying aromantics cant make alloromantics happy in a relationship, I'm ONLY speaking for Tokka here) 5/10

Sokla: I ship Azula with therapy and I can't get over how PAINFUL their first real canon interaction in The Day of Black Sun was for Sokka. Not my ship, but kudos if you enjoy it. NOTP. 1/10.

Katoph: Most of the same thoughts on Tokka apply here, plus Toph's energy is a bit too chaotic for Katara imo. Not my ship, but kudos if you ship it. 3/10.

Azulang: You already know why. But as with everything else, please by all means enjoy if this is your jam. It's just not mine. NOTP. 1/10.

I think that's all the "big" ones. Shipping is a personal preference, not a moral standing. If you despise my ships and are ride or die for my NOTPs, great. I'm happy you are able to find enjoyment in something I don't see the appeal in and it's nothing personal if don't enjoy what I ship.

Thanks for the ask, lovely!

Maizula is such a spicy ship, I love it! While I haven't explored it much, I think their dynamic is extremely interesting. And I will admit that it's surprising to me that a large swath of the fandom ships Tyzula when Maizula is right there and is (in my opinion) the superior wlw ship within the group of dangerous ladies simply because there is so much to work with. You can write Mai and Azula being a thing before she got together with Zuko... which just adds so many layers to their interactions, Mai choosing Zuko over Azula, etc. And Mai being one of the only people who isn't afraid of Azula - who rebelled against her in smaller ways all throughout their time together - that's such a compelling relationship to explore over someone who idolized her like Ty Lee. I really should look into more Maizula fics and art because they are a fascinating pair.

As for Zukaang, it is such an S-tier ATLA ship! The shippers are actually the best people in the fandom and really seem to be the ones who understand Zuko and Aang as individual characters the most. I'm not super invested in Zukaang personally, but I completely understand it. It makes sense narratively and thematically, and their story and relationship within the show is one of my favorites. Zukaang honestly deserves more love and should be the most popular mlm ship in the fandom!!!

happy ffwf!! god, i wish i could say yes to this question lmao, but i absolutely do not. there are so many atla fics living inside my brain rn that i just do not have the Energy to write, rip. as it stands, i don't currently keep a formal list of ideas to work on in the future (i try to keep track of active wips), but that honestly sounds like a very good idea and i should probably do that, lmao. and yes there are many ideas i love but i don't think im currently up to the task to write, including but not limited to:

- more than half of the kataang and zukaang week prompts 😩

- jetko heathers au

- maizutaraang fic (technically a wip on hiatus, but i have no idea when i'll be able to return to it)
