Pill Scarab Beetles: these beetles are covered in plates that perfectly interlock when the beetle folds its limbs, lowers its head, and curls itself into a ball
Above: Eusphaeropeltis sp. (top/bottom left) and Ceratocanthus aeneus (bottom right), two different species of pill scarab beetle
Beetles of the Ceratocanthinae subfamily (also known as pill scarab beetles) rely on a unique form of conglobation to conceal themselves. As the beetle tucks its head down and folds its legs up against its belly, the plates on its head, thorax, abdomen, and legs all come together to form a solid shield; the plates on its legs even have grooves and corresponding ridges that allow them to neatly interlock.
As this blog post explains:
Adult Ceratocanthinae are best known for their ability to conglobate: rolling into a nearly perfect ball. The elytra, pronotum, head, and all six tibiae interlock with each other by means of grooves and corresponding ridges, forming a tightly connected external surface. Many beetles take the form of a tight compact structure when threatened, however in Ceratocanthinae the tibiae of all six legs participate in forming the external hard surface of the sphere, unlike in other beetles.
Above: Ceratocanthus sp.
The Ceratocanthinae subfamily contains many different genera/species, and they are all collectively known as pill scarabs. Many of them have a colorful, metallic appearance; they may be green, red, blue, brown, black, or multicolor.

I'm feeling vintage, so I'm going waaaaaaay back to a time when spiral sequences were a required element in the SP. Few skaters mastered the spiral sequence like Sasha Cohen, so let's take a look at the sequence from her 2005-06 Dark Eyes short program.
First, I-spiral (which Sasha popularized!) into a fan. No struggle for the I position and superb balance into the fan position.
The sign of a great fan spiral position isn't just the height of the free leg but minimal bend in the working leg. Bending the working knee can help cheat the position by offsetting a lack of strength or flexibility. Note the minimal knee bend here!
Then the spirals dreams are made of: a nearly 180 degree arabesque held over a change of edge. I love how she tugs it just a little bit higher to get the full extension and the point in the toes is *chef kiss*.
And finally, just because she can, a Beillmann position to round out the ice-spanning set:
Spiral sequences are a hallmark of early IJS programs. When I watch them now they feel like an attempt to reconcile some of the showiness of 6.0 skating with the bullet points of IJS. Not every skater survived the transition. For every sublime Sasha Cohen moment there were a dozen skaters with limp Kerrigan spirals and dodgy catch-foots.
The spiral sequence was replaced with the choreographic sequence as of the 2012-13 season, a nod to changing tastes and shifting technical priorities. Few skaters now could hit a 180 arabesque, which is why I get so excited when I see a classic, well-supported spiral in the competitive wild.

the “sherry for lady bracknell” line from the pub scene in good omens s2 is my roman empire actually
for context: lady bracknell is a character from oscar wilde’s the importance of being earnest who’s meddling, snobbish and overly concerned with social status and keeping up appearances. and by reading too deeply into it, i like to infer two things:
1) aziraphale is canonically fond of wilde’s writings (in the novel he owns a complete set of first editions), and so most likely gets the reference and knows that crowley is playfully roasting him for being high maintenance
2) crowley is also familiar enough with it to make that reference in the first place, meaning that aziraphale probably dragged crowley on a little date to the theatre to see the play at some point in time

Spellbound ... available to stream on Hulu... is fine. 🔮
The writing skewed a bit younger than I thought it would (it's along the lines of Free Rein) but it's nice to have a Black female lead plus the cast has good chemistry with each other. I still have a bunch of eps left to watch.
I like to support shows with Black female leads esp young Black women, hence my tuning in to check out this show. (Emily in Paris doesn't even believe Black women exist in Paris so it's nice to have Spellbound throw tomatoes at that bit of misogynoir 🍵)
I haven't seen much chatter about this new show, maybe due to the holiday weekend, but I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.
