Is DC at the stage where they're unwilling to let time flow anymore (a 'Time Crisis' if you will), and the only way anyone's age changes now is through 'time shenanigans'.

Because there has to be an upper limit for how old they will allow a character to be - e.g. (For several reasons) They will never allow Bruce Wayne to turn 50.

You got it in one. Time is now an enemy that needs to be kept at bay, Why?

DC (and other comic books) have to keep their characters within a believable age range. It’s why DC has never allowed their characters to age in real time. They can’t and still keep them viable as Intellectual Properties.  Batman premiered in Detective Comics Comics #27 in March of 1939. Since Bruce was supposed to be somewhere around 22 to 25 years old at that time, he would pushing 130 years of age today.

The biggest canonical age-up in the Batfamily was Dick Grayson. Because of the 1966 Batman TV show he went from a ‘tween to a teen overnight. This was back in the days when I was young, meaning that comic books weren't really taken very seriously. The TV show was a huge success, so DC climbed on board the gravy train and tried to match as much in the comics as they could. 

 After the show ended in 1969, DC wisely realized that keeping an 18 or 19 year old in this costume...

was a truly bad idea (if not soft core porn at that point). Which is why Dick changed to Nightwing.

Dick was about 20 years old (maybe a little older at this point). He was a young adult but an adult by anyone’s standards. Dick then went to Bludhaven where he got not only his very own city to protect but better fashion sense as well. 

What this inevitably meant is that Bruce had to be aged up as well, leaving Bruce in his early 30′s when Dick became Nightwing. Batman got a series of Robins. First Jason..

Who was with him for 2 to 3 years. Batman is now early to mid 30s when Jason dies. Then Tim...

who started as Robin at 13 and stayed Robin until 17. That’s another 4 years. Bruce is now in his very late 30s. Then Stephanie...

who stayed Robin for all of 2 minutes before Tim was Robin again.

Bruce was in his very late 30s when Damian, age 11, came into the picture.

Four more years passed and not only did Tim go from being Red Robin to Robin again but he lost, then gained back a year of age. Damian went from 11 to 13 years of age, making Bruce in his early 40s.

The point is that each new iteration of Robin ages Bruce up. He’s now supposed to be in his early 40s. He’s beginning to feel age creeping up on him. A part of Bruce is finally ready to accept that he physically won’t be able to continue as Batman in another decade or so.

This is why the “Time Crisis” as you call it is vital. Batman has to be kept no older than he is now to be believable. It’s also why Damian got an upgrade to 13 but Tim is going to stay 17 basically forever. Yes, DC can pull some time shenanigan’s and let Damian and Tim get maybe a year older each but that’s it. 

The bottom line is simple. Batman and family are the biggest money makers DC currently has. If rumors are to be believed, Batman and Co are the only real money makers DC has. They’re pulling no end of crazy storyline stuff with Bruce but the one thing they cannot do is make him older. As someone in her late 60s I can tell you from experience that your early 40s are when you have the unpleasant awakening that you can’t push yourself like you used to. Sickness hits you hard. It takes longer to recover from injuries. You’re reminded of the wear and tear you put on your body over the years when you get out of bed each morning. 

“Time Crisis” isn’t really a crisis. It’s simply acknowledging that Batman isn’t Superman or Wonder Woman. He’s Bruce Wayne and Bruce Wayne may be the pinnacle of what a normal human can reach but he’s not an alien or a demi-god. Bruce Wayne is only mortal and all mortals fade with time.

BONUS Brick: 3 or 4. Because of their large size, stupid rats live longer than normal rats. (Domestic rats live around 3 to 4 years. I feel like stupid rats live for 7-10 since they're so large.)

Mr. Stick: Late 30's to early 40's. 39 maybe 41.

Pepperman: Mid 20's. He gives me the vibe of an artist fresh out of college. So like 25 or 26.

The Vigilante: HEAR ME OUT. He's a little aged. Probably in his 40's. Probably like 43. He just seems like an older gentleman.

The Noise: Definitely mid 20's. Probably like 24-26. Still pretty young. Acts like he's 13.

Noisette: Same as Noise, 24-26. Definitely a bit more mature than him, though.

The only confirmed S.E.E.S. members that are not yet in their 30s (this 2022) is Junpei, Ken, and maybe Koromaru [if he's still around which I hope so].

Sojiro Sakura might be the same generation as the Persona 2: Eternal Punishment cast.

Ryotaro Dojima (1970) is the same generation as the P2:EP cast and is three years younger than Boafu, and three years older than Katsuya.

Reiji Kido's child is probably the same age as Ken Amada and the Phantom Thieves.

I genuinely stand by my theory that season one of Metalocalypse takes plays at the least 3 years after Toki joined the band. Like we know they got signed when Magnus was in the band and shortly after being signed Magnus started acting like an abusive dick, not long after his departure Toki joined and their first album did abnormally well considering it being the debut album by a new act.

The pilot episode introduces us to news stations reporting on the fact that Dethklok has a cult like following who agree to sign pain waivers, the Tribunal just formed recently because of the alarming amount of influence Dethklok has on their fans and the fact they have employees who seem to act more like a private police force than employees. Also money is brought up through every season and in the beginning they’re mentioned to be multi millionaires, but by season four we hit the status of krillion

There’s also the fact with season one it’s brought up a few times by Nathan that he’s gained weight, which does seem to bother him and is even something reported in tabloids. We see in the cold open in season 3 that preklok Nathan was lean and fit which seems to have just recently changed due to their more comfortable lifestyle and being able to eat whatever and whenever they want to.

We also know a year passes between seasons two and three because it’s mentioned Charles died 9 months prior, another year is presumed to pass between seasons 3 and 4.

Basically what I am trying to say is none of them are that old, Pickles would at most be 34 or 35 by season four and Toki would be about 20 or have turned 21 in the episode where they make a considerably big deal of his birthday in season 3 while Murderface probably turned 30 in season one due to the fact the others find it bizarre he wants a party at all since he typically ignores his birthday due to valid reasons, but considering canonically he’s meant to be the second oldest next to Pickles would mean he probably turned 30 which is a milestone good or bad.

Skwisgaar and Nathan I would slate in their mid to late 20s

I fully reject any headcanon the guys are in their 40s or 50s considering the show goes hard on detail and that includes detail to age and when we see Pickles with Snakes N Barrels he looks drastically younger than them still and we know they would have been a band in the late 1980s and were probably already well into their 20s or older, Magnus in preklok already looked to be somewhere in his 40s and Rockzo is definitely somewhere in his 50s and we know his band peaked in the early 1980s with the Dory thing happening in 1982 when Rockzo again looked to be considerably young.

None the guys in Dethklok look aged like other characters in their 40s and up while even Charles appears to be close to 40 or possibly already there, his aging possibly not being a factor since he technically died for a bit.

Four Reasons I Don't Support Suki x Marcus

There is another Sing ship involving the Saluki which I can't stop thinking about or continuing to be tortured by: shipping her with Johnny's dad!

These words cannot escape my mind from the video of Illumination taking risks: "The company is 'going to have to evolve. We can have a commitment strategy to movies as a cinema-going experience and we can layer other business on top of that. There are topics of conversation right now that are very relevant to what we're doing in the future that get into areas that potentially might not please everyone. I think you have to honor the stories that you tell, honor the choices that your filmmakers make, and you have to be willing to not have everybody pleased all the time."

And since high-grossing franchises are constantly milked, that means they'll need new stories and new material, including ones that fans aren't doing yet. Plus, as Illumination insists on animal behavior, it makes sense for a gentle giant like a gorilla to be protective towards a Saluki, one of the most timid dog breeds of all, so that's one "open-minded/I'm not a judgy bastard who should be sentenced to damnation" perspective, and yet, I can't stand the idea of them being romantic partners any more than her and Jimmy being romantic partners.

Here are the four reasons:

1. They've too big an age gap

Okay, Suki is either in her 20's or early 30's, and Marcus...well, most of the characters' ages here aren't clear, but I assume he's in his mid-40's or 50's. And I realize that Sing lacks pairings with the man being two-three decades older than the woman and "HAS TO BE relevant to real life in all ways", but do they really need that? And yes, Johnny could have a stepmom in his life, but does it have to be a woman close to HIS age?

2. They lack the chemistry

Seriously, who thinks Chelsea Peretti and Peter Serafinowicz would have any chemistry?

3. It spells old-fashioned stereotype

I know strong men would be a good shoulder for tough women to be there as a shoulder and make them feel stronger and make them feel more human, but does it have to imply the strong man is as strong as one of those weight-lifters at the circus? Skinny guys can be strong in some way too. And a lot of women today aren't interested in beefcakes, which brings me to this reason:

4. It destroys her better judgement

In her first few minutes of the film, she comes off as this pretty-dresser who comes from the squeaky clean big city and is hard to please (FOR ENTERTAINMENT, btw!) and because she's a lackey for someone muscular and well-dressed (Jimmy) and is loyal throughout the film, due to dogs being loyal, until she betrays him, everyone just automatically assumes she only likes high-quality individuals as much as high-quality shows. Shows and individuals are two different things. Why throw it away other than just to make Ash, Meena, Rosita, Nooshy, and Porsha the girls you want to like that aren't picky?

She has potential to be liked by someone not taller than her and for her to reasonably like them back. That's realistic and not as superficial.

And I can stand the idea of Marcus finding someone to replace Johnny's late mom, just not if it means destroying the mentioned potential Suki had with other characters, or better yet, maybe not have Johnny's mom dead after all. Incidentally, what is it with Illumination and not having characters' spouses present? Marcus, Jimmy Crystal, Clay Calloway (that I can excuse), and we cannot completely conclude that Buster's mom is dead too.

I seriously hope Illumination doesn't force them into being so. I can handle it being done in fanfictions, but not in actual canon because that means they'd have to be canon in every universe (like how Mickey and Minnie are a couple in every universe and so on with other cartoon couples).

i don't think the sumeru interlude was about "redeeming" him. like yeah hoyo poor little meow meow'd him (which i agree with like awwww look at this crying kitty) but it's important to note that even with the opportunity to reject his pact actions he insists that they're a part of him and wants his painful memories and past back so he can feel whole. and after that he's still (rightfully) regarded with some suspicion by traveler/paimon unlike other characters (cough).

started playing on my friends acc during sumeru, so the first scene i saw of him was literally the divine will cutscene... and yeah i was hooked.

Wolfgang: having been a full adult (hopefully anyways gmdjdnsh) during our pre Maxwell being Maxwell era, we can assume he's also on the older end of the cast, but perhaps not quite as old, or maybe even older if you believe in yourself. I tend to view him as like 58, but he could rly range anywhere from 40s-60s to me, but technically speaking he rly could be younger, especially taking into account that we don't know when he entered the constant, as that evidently can functionally pause a characters aging with the outside world as seen with Wendy. I definitely wouldn't go below 30 though, he ain't that young

Wx-78: this fucker. This fucker. It all felt so clean after their rework animation, but noooo we had to have a notably young Wagstaff at an event that fucks with the timeline of everything, so now I. Wickerbottom: very clearly intended to be the eldest of the cast, I think it's safe to say she's like mid 60s at the absolute youngest. To me she's probably somewhere in her late 70s, but she could easily be much older. Tbh rn klei could pull anything out of their ass in regards to Wickerbottom they could say she's somehow 200 years old and we'd kind of just have to accept it as another unexplained fucked up Wickerbottom thing, they probably won't but itd be funny if they did. Just sequence of historical events with Wickerbottom standing in the background. She's like 79 idk.

Woodie: dude he could be like any age and I'd probably believe it. I personally tend to see him as late 30s, but I rly could see him ranging from late 20s to late 50s, and there's Nothing pointing in any specific age so idk. He can be 38 ig.

Wes: sigh. I don't fucking know. Somewhere in his 20s most likely. I don't like trying to pin down his age in my hcs nothing ever feels quite right to me </3

Wigfrid: this might be a bit older than most probably imagine her, but I've always seen her as a bit on the older end. Not like, Old old, but like somewhere in her late 30s to mid 40s probably? Mayyyybe early to mid 30s. Idk, I know she's an actress so having a successful career is more associated with younger age as opposed to older, but she's always given me big like. Star of a movie franchise that defines the first decade or so of her career in a way that sets her up for failure for the rest of it. Either way, I just cannot see her as being any younger than 30 personally.

Winona: now she's a bit of a tricky one. On the one hand, it should be easy to have a hc age for her since I have one for Charlie. On the other hand, I feel the need to think real hard abt what the age gap between the two is in my minds eye. It's hard because I can't in good faith go over 4 years, but I don't know how to narrow it from there. But with the 4 year limit, I think thatd put her in her late 30s early 40s ish in my hcs? To be young, beautiful, and the preference

I recently made a video about the Sprinkle Sprinkle lady, Sheraseven, and how her messaging didn't seem right with me, especially the part of her husband being married and having a girlfriend and her allegedly helping to clean out the wife's bank account, and I was told I didn't get it and they're right. The message is missing me, because at 36, I have lived to see a few things and know that everything she is saying is not completely copacetic and simply unrealistic and don't make sense. When I was 23, I was asked on a date by an older gentleman who then proceeded to ask me if I wanted to be a courtesans, which is another word for escort or, what we call today, a 304. This was not the first or last time I was asked this. I wasn't that type of girl, so I declined but no shame to those who are in the life. I had offers from older men to "take care of me," which was expected as I was young and beautiful and they were older, not necessarily ugly, but older with stable careers and money and we both knew what it was. But I noticed by the time I hit my late 20s, the offers kind of stopped. Not completely, as the man got to be a bit older, but slowed down. I say all that to say, the women like Savannah James and Sheraseven, who can truly have the hypergamous life, at seemingly very little expense, are few and far between and even Shera7 is looking a little funny in the light and Savannah doesn't talk much, so it's easy to project onto her.

I have noticed that most of the discord against Sheraseven and the SprinkleSprinkle movement comes from women in my age range, mid-late 30s to Gen X women in their 50s because we've been through it and we see how the men treat these women when they're done with them and it's not us being bitter that we're "old," it's that we know how it turns out and all the stuff they're telling you and giving you is just B.S. But like every generation, this generation of young people will have to figure it out on their own and will eventually join the elder circle of those watching the young people make the mistakes they once made.

There is a reason why the age gap between men and women began to widen around the age of 28 or so because as women began to wisen up, so do men and the luster tends to wane on both ends and this also the age when most people start to permanently, or at least legally, couple up and begin families and men, who like to impress with money, material things, and experiences can't really do that with a woman who has been experiencing that life since she was 17 or 18. Bow Wow, who is only a few months younger than me, famously said he want a woman he can give new experiences to and Marques Houston, who is in his early 40s, said he wanted a younger woman who didn't have baggage and kids, all the while saying his 19 year old wife was more mature than women twice her age. Okay. This is nothing new, men can simply blame it on feminism and independent womanhood but if we go back to history, the amount of our grandmothers and great grandmothers who got married and became mothers before they turned 18, to men twice their age, is astounding and this was before women had "rights." So miss me with the reasonings and excuses.

Youth and beauty are the most depreciating commodities but we treat them like they're everlasting and for some reason, every generation believes they are the exception and not the rule. Men have trained young, beautiful, 18-25 year old women to give them their peak beauty and time, many times to be left with very little to show for it once they hit the proverbial wall of 35 and up. Every older woman with a not so tight body and 3-4 kids, was once supple, young, and believed the world was her oyster was well and that she would never be traded in for the newest model. The naivete and resilience of late teens-20 somethings to see the best in life and that they're the exception will always amaze me because 20 somethings, who have never experienced life on their own, believe they have it all figured out. I remember being in my early 20s and getting offended when an older person told me I had more to learn or that I wasn't as wise as I thought I was and they weren't wrong and I should have listened because I would have saved myself a few mistakes and some time.

The way things were done may have changed but the game is still the same. I was in my early-mid 20s when social media really began popping to the point where nobodies became bigger stars than those with legit talent. It made multimillionaires and red carpet staples out of ordinary people. IG really became the new King Magazine, if you know you know, where a new way of life opened for women simply because they were beautiful. These women like Amber Rose, Black Chyna, Brittney Renner, India Love, Bernice Burgous, and even Kim Kardashian would go viral every time they posted a picture and many got opportunities and high profile relationships from it. The IG baddies who were at their peak in the early-mid 2010s are all in their thirties and some in their 40s and they're starting to pivot. They know Kim Kardashian is the only 40 plus woman who can still post a naked picture and it seem normal. Women in this life, from all generations, typically do one of three things, they have a baby, they get married, or they pivot into a successful business owner or even religion. The women who are my age, mid-late 30s are considered old or used up because this is the age your body changes and no longer easily bounces back, and women tend to be wiser and talk back a little more and men want a trophy and not a chihuahua.

The amount of women who believe they can outplay the architect of the game, is amazing to me. The game will always be rigged to let just enough of the select few in for us to believe we all have a chance at being the exception to the rule. The amount of women I see who believe they are playing men, only to get played at the end, is astounding. I remember when Ashley, from RHOP, was still married to Michael and they redid their prenup after he got caught cheating to get half of their shared assets and they're now divorced and she's not getting any child support while living in a house she cannot afford, that is in an LLC, that Michael owns and he can come by anytime he wants and make her company leave but let the internet tell it, Ashley won and she outplayed Michael.

There is a phrase that goes "church is where hoes go to die" because at some point, everyone ages out of the game, no matter what game you play, and sometimes the church is the only place a former hussie can have a little bit of power. There is a reason why Blac Chyna and Brittany Renner are trying to pivot because while they're still beautiful and someone's dream girl, they've aged out of the population they were once prominent in.

-The Night We Met is listed as one of Frankie Lou's songs, but the MV shows Buck Vernon's narrative, presumably during the events of Vide Noir

-Cobb Avery's story varies from the MV and the comic book. In the comic book, he and his family die in a sinkhole under their home which was purchased from the Winthrop corporation. He kills Winthrop first and purposefully forms the gang afterwards to aid him in killing off the others. The town is destroyed in a sinkhole at the end of the comic (which may have been caused by Avery through some supernatural bullshit?? unclear). In the music video, it's a purposeful house fire started up by the Winthrop corporation that kills him and his family (and is implied to have burned down the whole town). He starts killing the employees first before going after Winthrop at the end, and starts the World Enders more or less by accident after they tried to jump him and thought him being immortal was cool. his weird supernatural bullshit seems to be more around fire this time. The music video is generally seen as more of the "canon" version but trying to find set canon is like trying to eat ramen with a spoon so

He first gets to California in Vide Noir but he's playing in the band in the Fool for Love music video, which is supposed to take place after the events of vide noir but has both Johnnie and Frankie there alive despite having already been dead before he arrived so it HAS to be before Vide Noir. his band is playing on the TV of the Frozen Pines motel during the World Ender MV, which takes place in the early 50s. did he write louisa before or after Lee left him. he's not signed on to Whispering Pines Studios but theres a poster of him shown in Alive form Whispering Pines. why does every story he's in end in his death despite him NOT being dead. honestly how is he NOT dead after Vide Noir the fucker got black brained which killed literally everyone else and just. lived?? somehow??? why can he talk to ghosts. Hello, Sims side of Tumblr!~ Glad to have finally gotten around to making this blog, cause boiiii have I been getting more and more into these Sims games again lol Primarily that of Sims 2 cause that’s always been a childhood fave of mine (though I also really like dabbling in Sims 3 & 4 when I get the chance .3.)

So! To start some things off, here’s some personal age HCs of mine regarding the Pleasantview premades, cause ngl they’ve really grown on me as a fave neighborhood to play in~

The Goth Family:

-Mortimer Goth = 50’s (aged a bit more than others due to the stress of losing Bella/having to work overtime to provide the comfy life for his children. Though comes off a bit strict and old-fashioned, he’s a true gentleman at heart for those he cares about (especially for any future romantic partner).)

-Bella Goth = mid-40’s (at time of disappearance; went missing over a decade before the current timeline of Pleasantview, which devastated the neighborhood as she was a kind, elegant figure for the town to look up to)

-Cassandra Goth = late-20’s (was a child genius and advanced up a lot in school, graduating early enough to move up well in her Scientist career. Never got properly socialized around other kids though (minus her babysitter Mary-Sue, who became like a big sister figure), leaving Cass rather shy & awkward even at her age)

-Alexander Goth = 12-13 (was only a toddler when Bella left his life, so doesn’t have as many memories/sentiments about her as his dad & sister. Mainly keeps to himself save for his new friend, Lucy Burb, who just moved into town and keeps trying to nudge him out of his shell whenever they’re off school)

The Pleasant Family:

-Daniel Pleasant = mid-30’s (was highschool sweethearts with Mary-Sue, though were on the rocks to split up by graduation before suddenly finding out they were expecting. The two rushed to marry and settle to raise their twins soon afterward, steadily becoming distant over the years due to Daniel feeling like he missed out on his “youth” (aka: dating experience), whilst Mary-Sue buried herself in work.)

-Mary-Sue Pleasant = mid-30’s (A class valedictorian in her youth with many big dreams, was eager to marry Daniel at first & start a family before their marriage inevitably crumbled over the years. Very perfectionistic and ambitious in nature, always hopeful for keeping up a picture perfect family though isn’t really the best at actually being “doting”/emotionally available due to all the work stress she bottles up.)

-Angela Pleasant = 16 (The Golden Child daughter of the family, always praised and pushed by her parents to be at her best no matter what. Tries to be cordial and nice with her twin sis, though tends to come off rather condescending/“blind” to the struggles in her family. Only around Dustin Broke does she feel more at ease to be herself, as he’s not afraid to help nudge Angela from her “goodie two shoes” attitude.)

-Lilith Pleasant = 16 (The Scapegoat/Misfit daughter of the family, having grown up feeling so dismissed and ignored that Lilith’s developed a “tough” edge to avoid getting hurt again. Resents Angela for taking all the attention in the family, as well as her parents for being so caught up in themselves & their own egos. Dirk Dreamer was the only kid around the block who seemed to “see” Lilith for who she really is, giving her a chance and standing by her enough to the point where they’re currently dating.)

The Lothario Family:

-Don Lothario = early-30’s (The town womanizer and up-&-coming doctor; many local women can’t seem to resist Don's charm no matter where he goes. Having grown up as the only son to a very wealthy (and always busy) couple, Don could never seem to stay attached to many people (let alone a woman) for longer than a couple weeks/months at best. Making his recent engagement to Cassandra Goth all the more shocking (and to others, suspicious)...)

The Caliente Family:

-Dina Caliente = mid-20’s (The younger twin sister with the higher maturity level, having to kind of "step up" to lead her & Nina through life since their mother died. Has dreams for making "easy" big money via-marrying wealthy men, especially after moving into town and hearing about Mortimer Goth being an aging widower. Both she and her sister have become well acquainted with Don due to their shared charismatic demeanors... and according to local gossip, perhaps something "more"?)

-Nina Caliente = mid-20’s (The older twin sister perpetually stuck in her "laidback" party-girl lifestyle, nothing seems to excite Nina more than adding a new phone number to her hookup list. Tends to just follow whatever Dina's doing without a second thought, whether it's browsing the local clubs or setting up schemes to get themselves some "easy" money. Close as she is to her sis, Nina's actual "loyalty" could be questionable given how much she cozies up with Don (aka: Dina's "boy toy"), pretty much as soon as the topic of bars and hot tubs comes up.)

The Oldie Family:

-Herb Oldie = 70’s (The friendly, laidback father of Mary-Sue, Herb is quite content to live out the rest of his retirement days nearby in the neighborhood (just in time to help comfort his daughter from her marital woes). Though deeply loves his wife Coral and the life they’ve led up together, Herb lowkey always wondered what it would’ve been like to “explore” now and then…)

-Coral Oldie = 70’s (The responsible, caring mother of Mary-Sue who’s not afraid to tell it like it is when it comes to what’s right (something Lilith deep down always admired, herself). Never really felt that Daniel was “good enough” for her baby girl in all honesty… but never underestimate the love and devotion Coral has for her granddaughters (no matter how often the sisters bicker).)

The Broke Family:

-Brandi Broke = 34 (A teen mom who struggled to make it on her own since her husband’s sudden death; struggling to make a balance between being the “fun” mom for her boys (aka: buying them expensive gifts) and actually providing for them in their small trailer. Deep down wished to own her own diner-style restaurant, ever since she was a kid.)

-Dustin Broke = 16 (The angsty, troublemaking oldest boy of Brandi’s; having bottled up a lot of grief from his father’s death to the point of anger issues. Never really knew how to make friends and be nice to others, but always carried a strong protective instinct for his mom (though embarrassed by her at times) and brother(s) (+Angela, now that they’re dating).

-Beau Broke = 3 (The baby of the family (so far) who still carries enough innocence to lift up his family’s spirits on the daily. Would grow up to be a very hyper and playful child, eager to make friends with whomever he meets.)

The Burb Family:

-John Burb = early-30’s (A friendly family man eager for a fresh new start from the big city life, especially for the sake of lil Lucy and any other future children down the line. Never really got along much with Jennifer’s brother Daniel (who always acted like the “big macho/protective brother” around him), but John tries to remain civil now that both families are living in the neighborhood together.)

-Jennifer Burb = early-30’s (A confident child athlete-turned-business woman, Jennifer got so used to the hustle and bustle of the city with John that she’s still a lil “new” to the local suburb life. Though the younger of the two Pleasant siblings, Jennifer was never afraid to stand up to Daniel and try to push him to not lose sight of what’s important (aka: his family).)

-Lucy Burb = 10-12 (A peppy young girl who seems to keep falling into misadventures no matter the scenery, Lucy is just as eager to explore and have fun with the local children of Pleasantview (especially Alexander, even if he is a “grumpy pants” at times). Would not be afraid to kick the shins of those who try to mess with her loved ones (something Jennifer herself could attest to, having been a feisty lil girl as well back in the day).)

The Dreamer Family:

-Darren Dreamer = early/mid-30’s (A lonely, but well-meaning artist who can get his head a lil “lost in the clouds” to escape the harshness of reality. Deeply misses his late wife Darleen (whom he was childhood friends-turned-lovers with), and for the longest time never thought he’d have the energy to find love again… until Cassandra Goth entered the picture to comfort and care for him as a friend. Currently kicking himself with regret for being too late in expressing his feelings to her… especially now that she’s engaged to Don (whom, for Cass’s sake, Darren tries to be cordial towards… with mixed results). In the meantime, Darren’s determined to make it big with his newly ignited love for painting (while trying not to embarrass Dirk too much with all the art clutter in the house).)

-Dirk Dreamer = 16 (The friendly, loveable dork of Pleasantview (according to his fellow peers), Dirk is the kind of guy who doesn’t mind following after those with confidence, spunk, and drives to see beyond the little comforts of Pleasantview. While not always the best at speaking his mind freely (compared to his girlfriend Lilith), he makes up for it in being the “heart” of his small friend group.)

The Langerak Family:

-Kaylynn Langerak = early-20’s (Having spent most of her childhood cleaning up after the “messes” of her family, irony seemed to follow Kaylynn as she now leads the life of the local maid service. Having been blocked out by her loud, argumentative relatives her whole life, Kaylynn tends to come off rather soft-spoken and reserved in the present day (especially around those such as Daniel and Don). When she’s not busy on the job, deep down Kaylynn wishes for the simple, loving comforts of starting a family someday…)

Watching Ashok Kumar act, from late 1950's to early 1990's, when appeared in his last memorable role alongside incidentally the only other famous man ahead of him in the world rankings, Rajesh Khanna (both coincidentally rounding off from lead or parallel lead cinema at exactly the same time ~5 yrs later), many a times was nothing short of watching a masterful painting in live creation, or solo orchestra reaching heights of delicate euphoria in front of your disbelieving ears & eyes, leaving one with a impression that the impossible had just been achieved, & new benchmarks laid out, each time! A man so on the path to artistic liberation, that by last phases of his career came to certify projects as 24 carat hallmark by mere touch or presence. A dedication to the arts so steep & dangerously extreme, documented as even resulting in self-inflicted lifelong maladies all in the process of achieving the most difficult roles or scenes to his perfection. Most infamously for instance, when undertook upon himself the dangerous & incurable as it turned out for him sickness of asthma, by consuming self-concocted home-made potions designed to naturally create a particular wheezing sound heard only in dying speech! Was obviously a slide on the eyehole.

Starts up power tool, a chainsaw not even a chainsaw, much bigger, cuts door.

3-4 minutes of loud cutting door.

Dawn Doubty shoots her head off in one shot, sounded muffled i am guessing there was a struggle and that there was blood everywhere.

So back to the saw in the hall outside my door, the black girl the size of a safety in tackle football that wpuld fuck me up no question, is heard from the other side of the door, starts sawing with a hack saw.

I realize they are playing a skit, a roleplay to fuck me up, with closet storage to the left of the girl's door 309.  Closet storage 13 or 14, pretty sure 14.

Stops sawing, giddy, silly, psycho tone of voice, (why did you do this?)

"I wanted to hit or thumb or kick or (VERB missing) can't remember steven's hit or mob hit or whatever the word was, "enemy?"  Etc.???

Asks her to go in my room, steven's, gets downed hard.

Hits floor not moving.

Terrifying moment.

Intercom has words of dude with saw is killed for fucking around.

Wasn't supposed to go that close to me with power tools.  I'm guessing because both Tony Scott and Hunter S.  Thompson solodato'd me in thier savage murder.  (Suicide by Magnum .44 and jumping off San Pedro bridge)

Certain things were supposedly prevented or tried to be prevented by their actions of heroic and sad madness.  These fucks...

I look out peep hole-

What do you think of the costumes on Dreaming Back to the Qing Dynasty?

The plot of the drama is a mess, but the costumes look pretty, btw I'm not an expert:3

Hi, thanks for the request. To be honest I don't watch the dramas I review beginning to end because I don't usually have time for 50+ episodes dramas but the costumes in this one are so good that I actually watched 5 whole episodes, before getting put off by the plot...

Dreaming Back to the Qing Dynasty 梦回 (2019)

There is no English Wikipedia entry that I can copy and paste from for this drama (no love 😥) but it's basically about a modern working woman who time travels back to the Qing Dynasty and gets involved in court drama and romances. It's directed by Lee Kwok Lap and Chui Wai Hong (Rakuten Viki). I think in episode 4 or 5 they mention that the historical bits take place in the 45th year of Kangxi which is 1706. With a significant portion of the plot taking place in court, many characters should wear Manchu fashion and court dress. All the screenshots are from the Youtube uploads. The credits list Guan Qiwen as the stylist, Gu Fengxian as the costume designer, Lai Zhuping as the hairstylist and Ma Jingjing as the makeup artist. I wanted to credit all of them because as you will see, the entire team did such a great job.

I think the costumes look great, although they do lean more toward the mid and late 18th century than 1706. Finally for once a Qing period drama landed in the 18th century and not the 19th, this is a watershed moment in the history of Qing drama costuming ok? This is exactly what Story of Yanxi Palace and Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace should’ve looked liked but failed to deliver (they teleported themselves to the 1850s).

The construction of the 便服 bianfu (informal dress) robes here is extremely satisfying: they're collarless, they have the thin black binding around the neck, they have the horse hoof cuffs and they're in plain fabrics. The colors are also quite realistic and achievable in the early 18th century court. I do wish the male characters had less hair though; in the beginning of the Qing, men were practically bald with the exception of a teeny bit of hair at the back (about the size of a coin) which was grown into a pigtail. This is too much hair for me, although it is still a massive improvement compared to older dramas where the dudes barely shaved off any of their hair. The 褂 gua or coat the guy on the right is wearing is also very legit, it has the conventional five buttons and the sleeves that are looser and shorter than the robe sleeves. I’m super impressed!

The look on the right is highly questionable, maybe it was a specific type of uniform. I already trust the costume designer with my life so I’m sure whatever they came up with probably had historical precedent. The robe with a standing collar and the wide binding at the 大襟 dajin or lapel/front closure was something that existed, I’m just not sure if this particular color and pattern would be used.

Her mother’s entrance look is very intriguing: while all the other characters in this seem to be Manchu, she is wearing Han clothing with a Han hairstyle. From the description given in the show it seems that her family was originally Han but served the Manchu emperors and got elevated into the Banners (the Manchu aristocracy) so it’s not completely out of place for her mom to wear Han clothing I guess. With that said, this hairstyle is pretty interesting. It looks like they were trying to do the 1710s/20s hairstyle that looks like poop and they got it almost right, it’s just that the “poop” part could sit closer to the forehead. Her robe looks very late 17th century which makes sense for her age, though the collar could be taller and have two buttons.

In this scene we see again that the Manchu women’s robes featured in this show have slits at the sides, which shouldn’t exist for 衬衣 chenyi. They also layered a robe on top of another, going the 19th century chenyi + 氅衣 changyi route which also wasn’t a thing in the early 18th century.

Here it looks like the mother’s robe is way too long to be a Han robe? Han robes were pretty long around this time but they would still show a bit of the skirt underneath. Her father’s outfit is great though, he has the wine colored robe with horse hoof cuffs and a coat with a 补子 buzi (square badge), which was appropriate for an official. I like that the buzi is also colorful, with waves and cliffs motifs and a single bird, which were the norm in the Qing. 

In this scene where the ladies go to court it becomes more obvious that the costume designer completely understood the difference between Han and Manchu women’s fashion at the time. The Han girls are wearing two piece ensembles whereas the Manchu girls wear a single floor length robe. They gave the Han girls white, heavily pleated skirts and hairstyles with swallow tails which were popular in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. I can’t really tell how the Manchu hairstyles are achieved but if they were indeed braided I need to give the hairstylist a trophy.

I just noticed that they did give the Manchu characters three earrings on each ear, a practice known as 一耳三钳 yi’ersanqian, to differentiate them from the Han ones, who wear one earring on each ear; that’s a nice touch. Ok I think the biggest problem with the Han women’s costumes in this show is the collar height and fit. It should be much taller and more fitted to the wearer’s neck. Oh and I love the embroidery on all of their costumes, they’re often in roundel patterns or at least follow the pattern distribution common to the early 18th century. The choice of florals and butterflies is also really cute and true to the era and season (this is probably springtime), in addition to adding contrast to the menswear which usually features plain fabrics or those with brocaded geometric patterns. 

This square necked garment is very interesting and does have a historical precedent, they got the construction correct even down to the wide facing at the collar. I don’t particularly agree with the use of fake hair for this lady because I think it’d be more authentic to braid her hair or use a turban to cover it (it’s also a little too big).

They did recreate the smaller hair with another character, who is Han but probably changed into Manchu garb for riding. I cannot tell you how much I respect their attention to occasion.

Usually I would stop at episode 10 but I really want to see the winter clothes featured in the promotional photos so I skipped ahead. The winter clothes did not disappoint. The black fur collar trim is completely correct and so is the white fur trim for the rest of the coat. They’re also wearing winter hats with fur.

Omg this cloak YASSSSSS!! This might be the most legit early Qing cloak I have ever seen in a period drama. The construction is great because: 1) it doesn’t have a hood like in most period dramas, Chinese cloaks didn’t have attached hoods 2) it’s collarless, which is true to the early Qing 3) it’s pleated around the neck and most Qing cloaks were constructed by pleating or gathering around the neck 4) it buttons at the front with five buttons, which was conventional for Qing outerwear 5) it has no other shenanigans like openings or sleeves 6) it’s in a wool/felt fabric that actually looks appropriate for the season. I think 6 is particularly important and refreshing to me personally because fabric choice is something that’s very often overlooked in Chinese period dramas, like you would see people running around a field of snow in shiny silk adjacent fabrics and you’d just think “aren’t they cold in that?” Woolen fabrics, especially worsted wool which was waterproof, was usually imported from Europe to make rain coats and other outerwear and was quite unique to the Qing Dynasty, so I really appreciate the use of them here.

An artifact for early Qing cloaks. This one is pretty interesting since it also has a built in coat inside, but we can still see the construction of the outer cloak.

This Han look is very, very legit, and I love that it’s in a winter fabric too. The sleeves are a bit too short though, that’s also a recurring problem.

She’s probably wearing a 抹额 mo’e underneath her winter hat, which was a very popular accessory throughout the Kangxi and Yongzheng eras. Her 吉服 jifu robe looks pretty good too. I’m not sure if she would wear 朝珠 chaozhu (the bead necklace) for jifu though.

I leafed through 38 episodes and finally managed to get a screenshot of an outfit with the suspended kerchief. This is such a cool look that never got representation before this. You can see in many 18th century export paintings that sometimes Manchu women attached a plain white kerchief and other jewelry to the button at the dajin and just left them hanging there. My only quibble is that in the 18th century kerchiefs didn’t have this deliberately created rectangular shape yet, so they more than likely would just be loose and flowy instead of ironed and flat.

Conclusion

Phew this got really long. I absolutely loved looking at the costumes in this drama, words cannot express how refreshing and well made they are. Because this drama has such bad ratings I was expecting some sloppy costuming but this totally blew my mind. They pulled out some rare garments and looks that no other period drama (that I know of) has done before and executed them almost flawlessly, e.g. the suspended kerchief, the cloak, the square necked jacket, the fur trimmed winter clothing etc.. The differentiation between Manchu and Han womenswear was perfectly handled, in a lot of older dramas you couldn’t tell the ethnicity of the female characters at all where you should be able to. The construction and cut of the clothes are almost entirely period and I commend the costumer for not adding unnecessary details to “spice things up”. The attention to occasion and season is also remarkable, in spring the female characters wear clothing with floral and butterfly motifs and in winter everyone wears warmer, heavyweight fabrics. This is something that usually tends to be lacking in a lot of older guzhuang dramas which paraded their characters around in gaudy colors and fabrics regardless of weather and occasion. There is still the classic Qing court drama problem of the costumes being accurate to a different era; the Manchu clothes look more appropriate to the Qianlong era (mid to late 18th century) whereas the Han ones are more on point. A couple recurring problems also exist, such as the use of the not-yet-invented changyi, standing collars that are too low and sleeves that are too short. However, that does not at all detract from how much I want to give the costuming team a cookie----no, my entire fucking cookie collection. It’s such a shame that the plot was mediocre because the costumes really have the potential to make this show groundbreaking. I rate the costuming in this drama a solid 7/10 and I will be naming this the most historically accurate Qing drama to ever grace this earth until a worthy contender appears. Bravo.

here's a massive thing full of speculation and vague sketchy evidence: queen's thief character age chart! disclaimer: a good deal of this is guesswork, and also mwt has intentionally left character details open so that readers can fill in their own assumptions. therefor, even the canon bits of this aren’t strictly canon, and you are encouraged to imagine characters however old or young you want.

What we know for sure:

Helen is 20 during TT and Gen is 15 (note: there's a chance he's 16, depending on when in the summer it is.) Helen has been queen for 5 years and became queen when she was 15. Gen is 5 years younger than her. Gen’s birthday is in the summer. Sophos is younger than Gen by an unspecified amount, but old enough to be apprenticed to the Magus. (TT, Eddis short story, RoTT)

QoA takes place a year after TT, making Helen 21 and Gen 16 at the start and spans two more years. Helen says mid-QoA that she’s been queen seven years, making her 22 and Gen 17 at that point, and they are 23/24 and 18/19 by the end. Note: Due to Gen’s birthday being in the late summer and him being captured in the summer, there is a chance he’s already 17 at the beginning. If not, his birthday is shortly after. Irene is older than both Helen and Gen, and is old enough that Phresine worries about her producing an heir before too long, but young enough to still be considered attractive for more than political reasons. She became queen when she was younger than Gen is during the marriage proposal (18), and was engaged for a year during puberty beforehand. She had already been queen for a few years when Helen became Eddis. (QoA)

Gen and Irene get married in the summer. KoA (not counting the prologue) picks up less than two months after the end of QoA, starting in late summer or early autumn, making Gen 19. Only about four months pass from prologue to end, or two from chapter one to end. Costis is older than Gen, but “very young for a squad leader,” and Teleus accepted him a year below age limit. He was promoted to squad leader after the Battle of Thegmis (presumably the retaking of Thegmis, which takes place towards the end of the war). (KoA)

ACoK and TaT overlap some, with TaT also overlapping with RoTT. Gen is still 19 when Sophos arrives in Attolia, but turns 20 by the end of ACoK. Sophos goes through the final stages of puberty during his time as a slave and shortly after. (ACoK, RoTT)

Kamet estimates himself to be the same age as or slightly older than Costis. He was purchased by Nahuseresh when he was still a child, and has been with him for many years. Nahuseresh is attractive enough to interest Irene’s attendants, so presumably he’s middle aged at most. Gen is at least 20, possibly 21 when Costis and Kamet arrive in Attolia. (QoA, TaT, RoTT)

Two or slightly less than two more years pass from that point to the end of Rott, for a total of about 8 years in which the series takes place. Gen is 23 and Helen 28 at the end of the series. (RoTT)

Speculation:

General note: contrary to popular belief, the average age children reach puberty has not changed much throughout history.

Irene: Irene went through a growth spurt either before or while she was engaged, and was married a year after, making her anywhere between 12 and 17 when she was engaged. She was younger than 18 when she was married, so I would approximate she was 14 or 15 when engaged and 15 or 16 when married. She was already established when Helen took the throne, so I’ll say 3 or 4 years between the two of them becoming queens, making Irene 3 to 6 years older than Helen and 8 to 11 years older than Gen, most likely on the lower end of that.

Sophos: Sophos is finishing puberty when he becomes king, making him 16-19. Since he’s younger than Gen, who’s 19 at the time, my guess would place him at 17 years old at that point.

Costis: Costis is older than Gen by an unspecified amount, but very young for his rank of squad leader, and it’s mentioned there’s men twice his age serving in the guard, which means he’s probably below 25 if we assume the guardsmen retire around 50. The form of the Queen’s Guard is (loosely) based on the real-world Praetorian Guard, which recruited men between 15 and 32. Costis was a year below age limit when he was recruited, making him 14 if we follow Praetorian guidelines. It would take a minimum of four years for a Praetorian to be promoted to the equivalent of a squad leader, making Costis 18 at the youngest when promoted. However, he was promoted towards the end of the war (at which point Gen is 18), so he was either older when he was recruited, or took longer than four years. I’ll put him at 14 when recruited, 17-19 during the war with Eddis and Sounis, 19 when he gets promoted, and 20 at the start of KoA.

Kamet: If we take Kamet’s word for it, which I’m choosing to do because I’ve already done too much speculation and math, he’s either Costis’s age or a bit older, making him from 21 to 25 at most at the start of TaT. I’ll put him in the middle at 23.

Pheris: (forgive me I haven’t reread RoTT yet) Other characters assume Pheris is younger than he is, since he’s small and frail for his age. He’s old enough to be considered as an attendant for the king, so I would guess he’s 10 at the youngest when he arrives in the palace, but probably more like 12-13, making him 15-16 by the end of RoTT

i have not included minor characters because they’re even harder to pin down and this post is already long enough, but feel free to drop an ask or message if you want my guesses on any of them!
