is there any chance you could add killua for the airheaded but strong s/o headcanons? If not, then no worries, I just love how you write them!
Yeah, I don't mind but it's gonna be platonic because I'm a little iffy about writing for him romantically. He's just a boy 🥺🥺🥺 This is mostly a crack fic.
BONUS AIRHEADED S/O HEADCANNONS: Killua (HxH)
Tumblr media
Honestly tried to kill you at one point
Oh you're strong huh?
Then proceeds to hit you with everything he's got, only to see that it hardly affected you. (Kinda like the way he first treated Zushi)
After that he's petty, but impressed.
Congratulations 🎉🎉🎉 You've earned his respect 🥳🥳🥳
You're basically Gon 2.0
And he hates it
Cannot take you two anywhere
"We should break the lock to get in." Gon suggested.
"Are you stupid?" You scoffed.
"What's the point of having a door if you're just gonna break it?"
And Killua is momentarily at peace that at least one of you has some sense. Until you open your mouth again.
"Obviously we should smash open a window."
And Gon is nodding along enthusiastically
"You're right! What would we do without you 🤩"
And Killua is just 😮‍💨.
He is the parent of the group and I will die on this hill
If Gon's the sun, you're a nuke
He's constantly dragging you away from Hisoka
Nope. Not today
Why do you insist on talking to strangers.
No scratch that.
Why do you insist on talking to creepy strangers????
It gives him a massive headache everytime you almost get abducted.
Honestly thought about putting a tracker on you to avoid this happening.
But then he remembers you're practically indestructible so he drops it.
Is afraid Illumi will come for you and hurt you.
He was never allowed to have friends, and after Illumi threatened you and Gon at the Hunter Exam, he's very protective.
But then he remembers something you said after Greed Island.
"The three of us are all gonna become the best of the best. We're gonna get all wrinkly and old together and still kick butt!!! We're gonna stick together no matter what!"
And it temporarily quells the fear of his brother.
It makes him look forward to that outcome and gives him something to fight a little harder for.
When it comes to fighting, he does get a little envious of how you and Gon just rush in without thinking.
And how you always manage to win despite the circumstance.
But he never feels left behind because of it.
Like with Gon, he won't baby you, just call you an idiot and move on.
You fell?
Get up loser.
You can't read?
Find somebody else to translate. Or he'll make you do it and be laughing nonstop while you struggle to pronounce the word "Apple"
"Gon what color's an orange?"
"An orange is the same color as it's name. Just like a lemon."
Please somebody take you two back to first grade.
Killua is begging.
Even though he won't baby you, he'll rush as fast as he can if you're in actual danger.
You got caught by the phantom troupe?
"Are you completely brain dead!?!!? Where are you!?!?"
Now he regrets not putting a tracker on you.
"This nice clown man gave me candy and told me to follow him." You tell him over CALL.
"HISOOKAAAAA!!!!"
He is screaming and panicking.
You trespassed into the mountains his family lives to see him.
"WHY???? DON'T YOU KNOW ABOUT MIKE!?!?"
And when he gets there he sees you rubbing the monstrous canine's tummy. Petting him and calling him a "Good Boy."
Names he has called you out of spite: Idiot, Moron, Dummy, Psycho, Airhead, Ditz, and probably Pea Brain
On the bright side, you are Alluka's favorite person.
"Give me your ribs."
"Oh, are you hungry? Let's see if we can't find you a smokehouse for those ribs."
And it baffles both souls so much that Nanika accepts that as fulfilling her command.
Plus you have endless amounts of energy that works to drain both girls out. Even when they've both already swapped twice.
Killua designates you her official babysitter when he's busy.
You are a complete lunatic and moron, but you're one of the people he trusts the most.
Even if he does complain about you a lot.

summary - mike as a dad
warnings / includes - reader is fem. otherwise fluff :D (also there’s so much background and plot like sorry not sorry lol I really like to ramble)
————
if there’s another fnaf movie… mike needs to be a dad. i know that’s not the plot at all and wouldn’t make sense, but i think the box office would benefit from that!
mike is already kind of a dad. he’s been raising abby for a few years now. he wouldn’t consider himself any type of caregiver because well, he thinks he’s quite terrible. and the term ‘brother’ is so much less daunting than ‘dad’. so when you two found out you were pregnant, he felt more fear than excitement. it wasn’t a surprise really. you two hadn’t been using condoms as regularly, but he was more stunned that now he was going to be a father and he was terrified.
regardless of how he felt, he supported you in every way possible during pregnancy. he was literally perfect. dude did the bare minimum and more! every day he would ask what you wanted to eat each day, no matter how weird the cravings were, and he would try his best to honor them. he gave you massages, went on walks with you, talked to the baby, went on doctor appointments with you — he even scheduled extra ones when you weren’t feeling well because he was so scared of you or the baby dying or something.
and after the whole freddy’s pizzeria fiasco — glad you weren’t pregnant during that lmao — he was able to get a job as a sales associate and become a manager with the help of him taking some online college courses. (you definitely helped with convincing him he was good enough to go back). abby was making new friends at her school and even helping you out when you were pregnant: making desserts for you, giving you advice on baby clothes, already making plans with the baby to play house or dress up. things were looking up.
until you give birth.
now, as we mentioned, mikey poo was a little nervous when he found out you were pregnant. and things went so well with your pregnancy, he kind of forgot to think about what it was actually going to be like when the baby was here. he was about to shit his pants fr while you were giving birth. but then they put the baby in your arms and everything just came together for him. cliché to say, i know, but it’s real!!!! and god, when he finally got to hold his baby, he was wrapped around her little finger. (i’d like to think he’s a girl dad — we already kind of see that with abby). she has mike’s big brown eyes and your cute nose. she looks exactly like a mix between the two of you.
for the first few months, mike was more focused on you than the baby. don’t get me wrong! he’s great father, but he just had that mindset that everyone wanted to take care of the baby: your parents, vanessa, even abby, but nobody was taking care of you. (doesn’t that just make your ovaries scream??) so he made it his mission to help you out with everything he could, on top of the baby, which he absolutely didn’t mind. lowk, mike is a house wife.
in the night, you two would trade shifts for the baby. there were times where he knew you were so tired from breastfeeding and just taking care of the baby during the day in general — he had to work full time still to be able to provide for you guys — that he would take full night shifts and let you sleep. it was basically like working at freddy’s so….
when you started going back to work, mike would make sure the laundry was done, house was always clean, each meal was made, abby got to one place or another. of course, he spent as much time taking care of the baby as he did with other things, but you were just under so much stress and he felt as though the best thing he could do for you was take most of the mental load. soon you became accustomed with being a mom and soon your workloads were basically evenly split.
okay enough of the background.
mike loves playing with the baby. sooo crazy, right? lol. he loves doing tummy time with her, playing peek-a-boo, talking in funny voices. he also loved picking out outfits for her, even though he actually has no sense of fashion and you quickly banned him from buying anything in the store. i think his favorite thing to do with his baby girl is making her laugh. ugh! baby laughs are so cute in general, and it just made his whole world. unlike everyone in the world, besides you and sometimes abby, no one really liked mike. well, no one gave him a chance and to be fair, he didn’t really let them. it wasn’t until he met you where we felt complete and whole and happy and not afraid of risks. and it wasn’t until the baby where he felt a true sense of purpose and he was happy with how his life turned out.
his absolute favorite sight in the world is seeing you, abby, and the baby play. the house has never been filled with as much joy as it is when y’all are playing. everyone’s giggling, teasing each other, fawning over the baby. its literally like the perfect family he never got to have :,).
he also absolutely adores you as a mom. he thinks you are the best mom ever. and of course he should think that anyways, but he believes it with his whole being. being a first time mom, you were nervous of course. but in the first month, all you did was berate yourself for not being a good mom and not knowing your baby’s needs, but with mike’s reassurance and time, you gained more and more confidence.
when the baby starts going to daycare, mike is actually terrified. he starts to look for jobs he can do at home because he’s so scared that what happened with garrett is going to happen to his baby. but with multiple background checks, questions, lowk spying, he tries to trust the daycare center you two choose.
random note before i stop talking. mike is a sleepy guy and so is the baby. the two often nap together with the baby on top of his stomach. AH. looks so cute. sometimes his hand is on her head or back, or her little fingers are wrapped around his thumb. you have countless of pictures of them in this one situation. i’d like to think mike doesn’t really sleep when the baby is on his stomach because he’s afraid she’s gonna fall or he will roll over, but he stays as calm and quiet as he can so she can rest.

IM LATE BUT LIKE WHATEVER i just decided im gonna try and commit to @steddie-week so DAY 1: somebody to love by queen
--
when steve and eddie first tell the party about their relationship, a lot of them are a little confused. especially nancy. at first glance, the pair makes no sense at all.
steve is a soft soul that really enjoys basketball. he was a jock in high school, and doesn't really have any higher ambition in life than to make enough money to live and be with his loved ones. his favourite artists are the likes of tears for fears and abba. the hobbies he's most committed to are baking sweet treats and watching reality tv with claudia henderson.
and then there's eddie, who in a lot of ways is the antithesis to that.
he almost exclusively wears dark clothes that look three days away from falling apart, he despises sport. he was an outcast in high school, and even though he barely made it to graduation (a few years later than he should've) he is full to the brim of ideas and big ambitions. he's pretentious about music, hates pop and loves metal music. and he's a nerd.
they don't have much in common, so nancy's surprised they work as friends let alone as a couple. then again, she doesn't know eddie too well past what she's already said.
so her and a lot of the party don't really get it at first. until they're having a party over summer break, and everyone's out in the hopper-byers backyard watching hopper grill burgers for everyone and there's music playing through speakers somewhere.
the younger party members are all excitedly chatting amongst themselves, and the teens are sat leaning back on the grass. eddie and steve aren't cuddling for once, settling for linking pinkies as they lean back on their hands.
the song that was playing ends, and a new song starts. freddie mercury's voice starts singing, and nancy doesn't think she's ever seen steve move so fast in all her years of knowing him.
"can anybody find me somebody to love?"
freddie mercury is barely on the second word of that first line when steve and eddie's heads whip around to be facing each other. twin grins are on their faces, and they've jumped up together by the time the first line's over. steve seems to lose steam as he realises a lot of the party are now looking at them incredulously, and his cheeks suddenly have a red tint to them.
eddie immediately grabs steve's hands and starts dramatically serenading him. if nancy thought eddie was a little dramatic from overhearing mike retelling hellfire club anecdotes, she thinks he's extremely dramatic now she's seen his antics in the flesh.
he's gently swinging his and steve's hands as he encourages steve to dance with him. steve just smiles at his boyfriend, a little shy and a lot fond, but eddie's not put off in the slightest. he keeps gently pulling at steve's hands until steve gives in and starts moving to the music with him.
by the time the first verse is over, steve's almost as into it as eddie is, and nancy has never steve like this.
"i work hard, every day of my life." eddie sings along loudly, and steve sings the other part.
"he works hard." he sings softly with a smile.
his confidence amps up as the song goes on, and his dance moves get more and more ridiculous and less restrained as eddie encourages him and laughs with him as they sing. by the time it gets to the instrumental break, the entire party is watching them with smiles and singing along in some way.
the steve nancy dated would never be caught dead doing something like this, but here current steve is, back to back with eddie as they both dramatically play the air guitar. nancy looks toward robin to see if she's as shocked as she is at this display. but robin is just rolling her eyes, like she sees antics like this on the daily. she shakes her head at something dustin says to her, and then yells at the couple.
"i thought you promised to stop doing this every time this song came on?" she tries to look annoyed as she yells over the song, but fails massively.
steve stops his dramatics for a second, and points at her dramatically.
"you asking us to do that is exactly why i am doing this in front of everyone." he claims, and gets a (subtle, because everyone respects joyce) middle finger in return from robin.
"his pettiness knows no bounds, buckley, you should know this! you can only take so much of the mean girl out of the jock." eddie adds on, and that gets the pair another middle finger.
steve throws his head back as he laughs, and nancy smiles at him. he looks a lot happier than she's seen him in a long time. probably happier than she's ever seen him, actually.
"find me, find me, find me love."
as the last little bit of the song plays out, and steve and eddie dramatically fall on top of robin to dog pile her, nancy decides that maybe steve and eddie do make sense.
even in seemingly polar opposites, there is common ground.

Joel eased into the chair next to you under the pergola he built 25 years ago. It was still sturdy and spoke to Joel’s craftsmanship. The sun was beginning to set, granting some relief to the spring heat as you watched your three grown children clean up the backyard. They’d insisted the two of you relax.
Emma graduated from Duke last weekend with honors in Pre-med. Which meant traveling to North Carolina for the ceremony. Joel has insisted on driving up. He hated flying. With a 20-hour car ride one way, you caught up on a lot of reading and almost booked yourself a plane ticket home. The two of you had been gone for almost a week. So her graduation party took place this weekend at home. She’d been accepted into UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Medicine and would be going back to Durham in a couple of weeks. She was officially moving out, boxes already stacked high in her room. You and Joel both chose not to think about your baby leaving the nest for good.
Emma laughed at something Asher said. You couldn’t see Sarah roll her eyes, but you knew by her body language. Joel chuckled next to you. He sensed it too, both in tune with your children.
Asher graduated with a Bachelor's in Engineering from UT-Austin a few years ago, choosing to stay close to home. He had a small apartment in town working at Miller Construction since graduation. Joel joked that if he didn’t put his degree to use soon, he was gonna have to rebrand as Miller and Son. You had a sneaking suspicion that’s what Asher wanted. He and Joel shared the same love of building things with their hands.
“Grandpa!” Sarah’s 3-year-old daughter, Jessie bounded across the yard, dark curls bouncing like springs behind her. You could see the brightly colored book in her grasp.
She panted heavily as she reached the two of you. Her small hands rested on Joel’s knees. She looked up through dark lashes. “Will you read this to me?”
Joel smiled. She reminded you so much of Sarah at her age. “Don’t you want grandma to do it? She’s a much better reader than me.”
“No, you!”
“Okay, Okay.” Joel chuckled, pulling the child onto his lap. You closed your eyes as you listened to Joel read. His drawl had only deepened with age but it still flowed like honey. It soothed your weary bones and often brought you through time, making you feel 25 again.
Sarah had started college at the University of Georgia but transferred to UT-Austin after her freshman year. She loved Georgia, but she missed being close to her family more. She’d earned her Bachelor's in Journalism and Creative Writing (also with Honors). Working across all aspects of journalism, she went back to get her MFA several years later. She worked freelance for several publications and taught a creative writing class at the community college in town. She’d married Mike 6 years ago. They’d been together since senior year of college aside from a one-year gap. They’d bought a house just down the street from you and Joel soon after their wedding. Jessie’s 4th birthday was next week, and aside from her husband, you were the only other person to know that Sarah was 8 weeks pregnant. They were planning to reveal it next on Father’s Day.
You and Sarah were convinced Joel didn’t have a clue. The two of you were desperate to surprise him. Other than his 45th birthday party, you and Sarah hadn’t been able to surprise Joel in the 31 years you’d loved him. He’d even figured out Sarah’s first pregnancy before they’d told anyone.
Joel continued to read. The world drifted further away only anchored by the sound of his voice. Sometimes a bird’s song drifted in and out. The warm breeze floated across your skin. Joel’s voice stayed constant.
“Grandpa… Shhhhh, grandma is sleepin.”
Joel looked up from the book. He smiled. The wrinkles around his eyes were well-defined now. “I think she’s just restin her eyes, kiddo.”
“That’s what you say when you’re sleeping!” Jessie giggled.
“Keep reading,” you said, keeping your eyes closed. “The story was just getting good.”
He looked at Jessie who nodded her head, and he continued.
The construction business had been good to Joel. Miller Construction kept its outstanding reputation throughout the years, something Joel worried about as the number of crews grew and his ability to check up on every job decreased. Joel spent most of his days on job sites in a supervisory capacity. He trained the new hires to meet his rigid standards, and his body took less wear and tear. He was able to spend more quiet morning moments with you. At 56 years old, he was still the best pitcher in the men’s rec softball league. He took every Thursday morning off to hang out with Jessie while Sarah taught her class at the Community College. He piddled in the garage on weekends, working on the next project. He’d just redone the kitchen cabinets. Tommy joked that Joel lived in partial retirement, but there was some truth to it. You liked seeing him take time
Joel finished the book as Sarah and Mike walked over. You slowly opened your eyes, letting the world envelope you once again.
“It’s time for us to go home, Bear,” Mike said.
Before Jessie could issue a complaint, Joel pulled her into a back-breaking squeeze. She laughed. He tickled her sides. “Grandpa!”
“I gotta make sure you meet your tickle quota.”
“I have! I have!” Jessie laughed, her cheeks turning red.
“Okay,” Joel let out a deep breath. “I think that’s enough for today.”
Jessie wrapped her arms around Joel’s neck, kissing his cheek. “Love you, Grandpa!”
“I love you too.” He kissed her cheek, patting her back. “I’ll see you on Thursday.”
Jessie slid off his lap, rushing to you. A chorus of goodbyes between parties rose in the corner of your backyard in hugs and handshakes. Jessie nestled into her father’s arms, eyes already beginning to droop.
Joel wrapped his arms around you. You leaned into him. His hands traveled down your back, lips finding yours. You grinned feeling warm and giddy. Even after all these years, he still had the same effect on you.
Gagging noises interrupted your moment. Asher and Emma stood on the porch directing said sounds at you.
“Get a room!”
“We don’t want to see that!”
Joel flipped them off before firmly grabbing your ass making a show of the steamy kiss he planted on you. You laughed. He kissed your neck softly.
“You’re gonna traumatize the kids.”
“They’re grown adults. They can leave.” He nuzzled into your neck. “I want to kiss my wife in our backyard.”
“Y’all are gross.” Asher chided.
“If it weren’t for us, you two wouldn’t be here,” Joel shouted back.
“You say that like it’s a good thing!” Emma responded. “Have you seen the world?”
“Hey,” You laughed. “You’re the saving grace of this family, Miss I’m going to be a doctor.”
Asher scowled. “Don’t say that. Her head will get bigger than it already is.” He ruffled Emma’s hair.
Emma rolled her eyes. “We’re done cleaning up. We’ll leave you two to do… that.” She motioned toward you and Joel. “Asher’s gonna take me out on the town.”
“Make smart decisions,” Joel called.
“Always!” Emma smiled.
The duo filed out of the backyard leaving you and Joel alone. Joel kissed your forehead as you swayed to a nonexistent tune.
When you finally stopped, you and Joel sought the respite of AC inside. Joel prepared a plate of leftovers for the two of you to share on the couch. You read as Joel watched the Baseball game on low volume. You propped your feet on his lap. His thumbs found the soles of your feet applying pressure. You hummed.
You had stepped down from your position at Miller Construction after Emma started high school. As much as you loved working with Joel and helping him build and expand the business, desires drew you elsewhere. You started working part-time at the public library. When their head librarian announced plans to retire, the city had offered to pay for you to get your Masters in Library Science providing you could give them a 10-year commitment. Daunting at first, you’d managed to complete the courses in 2 years via an online program. You work at the library full-time now. Joel often brought Jessie in on Thursday mornings along with a coffee for you. You tended to the garden on weekends. Joel replaced your raised beds a few years ago. You had the kids over for dinner once a week. You and Sarah walked the block on pleasant evenings. You spent lazy evenings on the couch with Joel, something that had rarely been a part of your marriage until the past few years.
“I’ve been thinking…”
You looked up from your book. “Uh oh, that’s never good.”
He tickled the bottom of your foot earning a squeal. Everyone talked about growing out of being ticklish. That had never happened to you. “I think it’s probably time to refinish the book nook.”
You glanced behind you, eyes trailing over the bookshelves Joel had built you more than 25 years ago. They’d been through it. The finish was peeling in a few places. The cabinet doors that lined the bottom were dented and scratched from a number of things bumping and running into it while raising 3 kids. You glanced at the farthest one, still stained with faint marks from Emma taking Sharpies to it when she was 3. Residue from stickers marked other areas.
“Sounds like a big project.”
“I’ve got the time.” Joel smiled.
He reached down beside him, revealing a gift bag. A simple brown paper bag with a gold ribbon neatly tied and curled. Sarah’s trademark. He handed it to you with a smile.
“This from you or Sarah?”
“Me.” Joel crinkled his nose. “Just asked Sarah to wrap it for you.”
You lifted the bag up and down. It felt like it was probably a book. It rarely wasn’t. “And what is this for?” You smiled at him.
“Just fulfilling my husbandly duties.”
You laughed as you untied the ribbon. Joel had taken your first line to him like an oath over the course of your relationship. He’d surprised you with a new book at random times. Sometimes you came home to one on the kitchen counter or your nightstand. Other times, wrapped or handed to you, each with an inscription detailing something he loved about you and how “Pretty” didn’t cut it.
You smiled at him, pulling a hardcover book out of the bag. You opened the front cover. A piece of paper slipped out. Before you could investigate, Joel’s handwriting caught your attention.
I don’t know if you’ve been counting, darling, but this is the 100th book I’ve given you. When I met you in that bar, I knew if I had the chance to give you just one, I’d be the luckiest man alive.
We always talked about going on a big trip for our 25th wedding anniversary. I know it’s a little bit late, but I booked us on that trip to Italy you were eying last year.
I’m sure it’ll be beautiful, but I still think the best view is you.
I love you, Darling.
You picked up the slip of paper: the booking confirmation set for mid-September. You looked up at Joel, tears blurring your vision.
He chuckled. “Surprise.”
You set the book carefully on the end table, moving onto Joel’s lap. “You hate flying.”
“But I love new places.” He kissed your nose. He still looked at you like you hung the galaxy. You imagined you looked at him the same. “And you.”
You kissed him, the words whispered for just the two of you. “I love you too.”

Who do u think is more romantic will or mike?
hmmmm. kind of hard to answer when will has no experience rly. will's been shown to be very loving, and so i think his expression of romance would be more in how he feels and what he wants, and how he verbally expresses that and weaves it into his daily life. see: the declaration of love that inspired and was woven into the painting, how he wants to spend forever with mike and tells him that more than once, and fights for their friendship when he feels it crumbling down. i think he'd be romantic in the sense that he can't help but embed his love into everything he does for mike, and it'd show in his careful consideration for him, too. it's less flashy, but constant and everywhere. he'd put it into everything and tell him all about it because he can't help himself—that kind of thing. and when he does give gifts, they're extremely thoughtful ones.
mike is more action oriented and more romantic in the "traditional" sense. he has a lot of moments, such as when he tells el they can figure out how to dance together, his white knighting, how he wants to spend every moment with his partner and gets tunnel vision for them (which i don't *personally* find romantic, but i know a lot of ppl do lol n i guess it generally highlights his priorities), he tried to get her a "sorry" gift, biked across town in the pouring rain to apologize, and the flowers he gave el & how he factored her favorite colors both into those and his outfit. he does give good speeches in high stakes moments when he fears all could be lost soon, but generally i think his romantic expressions are more action than verbal. i think he's the more likely one of the two to come home with flowers, to get the door for will (as he already does), and to do all the cheesy stuff we see in movies.
i don't know who i think is More romantic. i think they both love hard; they just express it differently.

mike's monologue was built on guilt...
[disclaimer: i know i'm not discovering the wheel here. most of what can be said about byler has already been said by so many people before me so none of this is new. i've personally haven't read a post addressing this but i am sure there must be tons of them i haven't run into yet. all this to say, i wanna give my personal opinion on mike's monologue based on my rewatch of season 4 but in no way i'm pretending to be the first one to have noticed this. okay, that being said...]
mike feels so much guilt during season 4 it's actually sad.
so, we all know one of mike's biggest conflicts is how he understands the love others give to him. for mike, that love is tied to conditions he has to meet in order to keep. to keep it short and simple, we know mike feels the need to be needed in order to be loved, and this specially reflects on his relationship with el since that's how they dynamic started from the very beginning. el had no one and mike took her in. el became dependent on mike and under those circumstances, they became friends and then were nudged into a romantic relationship. then in season three we see how el is growing out of that first dynamic by becoming more independent and getting to know herself outside of mike and hopper and every other male who has had something to say about her life. that independence causes issues in mike and el's relationship because it's a type of dynamic they haven't experienced before and if el who is so cool and powerful, a superhero, doesn't need mike then there's no reason why she would want to stick around at all (remember that tied to mike's misconception of love is also his fear of losing people).
entering season 4, mike finds out el has been lying to him about his life in lenora and i think that's the first bead of guilt that drops on him. after seeing the abuse el suffers in rink-oh-mania, mike understands that el has been needing someone and yet she chose not to come to him. now, this isn't something mike holds against el mostly, but i think it's something that hits him hard in the sense of even when el was needing someone she decided to not seek mike for help.
then, when they have their fight where el confronts him for never saying he loves her anymore, mike still doesn't say it and instead deflects the responsibility to others. then the moment is over, el is taken away and when mike runs after her to say he will fix it and that el just needs to trust him, el doesn't really look at him. she looks defeated and tired.
when el is taken by owens' personnel and mike reads el's letter, that's when the rest of the guilt settles in. we get verbal confirmation of this when mike opens up to will in episode four during their first heart to heart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
mike knows what that thing he should've said was. of course he knows! el spelled it for him and he still didn't say it. so here, we have mike wondering if el would've needed him still, would've wanted him around if he had only said what she was asking of him. if he had, then el wouldn't be alone right now. he would be around to help and keep her safe.
guilt.
here, though, unless you read between the lines, maybe it's not so clear whether mike wanted to say that thing and simply wasn't ready to or not.
the scene in the car graveyard, though, it's pretty damning in my opinion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
what is interesting to me here is that before mike told will "if i had said that thing..." so we know he knows what he should've said. and still, here mike goes "i didn't know what to say."
clearly mike doesn't mean it in the literal sense. again, he knows what el was asking of him, he knows what she needed and wanted to hear, so the way i read this is that even while knowing what she wanted, mike still didn't know what to say because the words he could offer weren't the ones el was asking for. i didn't know what to say as in i didn't know what to say that was truthful and that could help el at the same time, which makes feel mike even more guilty because once more he couldn't be what el needed him to be.
that thought is confirmed with what will says next.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
hard to say how you really feel because what if they don't like the truth. and mike nods at these words because he agrees with them.
now, it makes no sense at all if what mike is so scared to say was "i love you" like he said later in the season. it just doesn't. mike agrees to be afraid of expressing how he truly feels in case they (el) doesn't like that truth, but mike knows exactly el wants to hear mike loves her. mike disguises it later as in saying he was scared of losing el and by telling her he loves her he would lose her or something? but he is actively losing her by not saying how he feels! and then, at the pizza place, he still hesitates! he still needs a push to say i love you even when he knows that's what el needs of him and that by not saying it he risked losing el forever. why. does. he. still. hesitate. then.
makes no sense. unless, mike doesn't want to say i love you because he can't because that's not what he feels for el, and that fills him with guilt and with the fear of losing el because he can't be what she needs. so, with the guilt and with the fear of losing el and with will's nudges in the wrong direction, mike monologue happens.
and mike... kinda overdoes it by saying a bunch of things that we know aren't things el needs or wants to hear because she doesn't want to be a superhero anymore, even with her powers back. and mike also starts saying i love you over and over again, after not being able to even write it. that reminds me of this post i once saw of how when you keep repeating a word over and over again, it becomes meaningless and how it even stops sounding like a word. it's just sounds coming out of your mouth. hmmmmm...
anyhow, to end this post i just have to say: mike is dealing with a whole lot of guilt during this season because of his conflictive feelings, the ones he lacks towards his girlfriends and the ones that keep surfacing for his best friend, and when the moment life or death comes, mike (in good old mike fashion) decides to sacrifice his own feelings for the sake of helping and saving el, being what she needs him to be so he doesn't lose her

Marcus’s POV
I was offering her a life, a future, with me. Because I needed to fill the void in my heart, a void the shape of you. I wanted Teresa to fit void and I tried to make her fit but she didn’t and she knew she didn’t she knew she was competing with someone else, someone who wasn’t even around anymore. So she left, I don’t blame her, I’ve become a version of myself I hate. I destroyed what I had with you for a false future, a future that was built with you. I was selfish, I am selfish, I saw something new and shiny and thought it’d fulfill the future I had with you but that was the problem. The future I wanted was only possible with you. I not only ruined that but dragged another woman into this mess as well. She’ll be fine, Teresa was with me as a distraction from Patrick, an attraction that couldn’t be ignored. Now she’s with the man she wanted and I’m alone. I deserve the ache and pain I’m feeling, the heavy guilt that sits on my shoulders, I hate what I did and who I became.
I was able to start anew in Washington. The pain never left me but no one knew my horrific actions, the man who had been divorced once and later left his soulmate for a woman he barely knew all because she was new and exciting. I went to work and lived my life day-to-day quite ordinarily. Never socialized, I couldn’t hide my pain well enough to socialize or make friends. But this false sense of security came to a screaming halt when I was told I’d be returning to California for a case. There I’d face Teresa, who was happy with Patrick and the city where I made my biggest mistake.
As much as I hated the idea of going my heart leapt at the chance. You were there, I’d be close to you. I could visit you. I could, but I won’t. I know you don’t want to see me. When I think of you I’m reminded of how amazing you are and how much I love you but for you, I remind you of pain and heartbreak, that anyone can leave no matter how much you love them. I’m not just a ghost in your life but a haunting, a poltergeist. My actions haunt you every day, have changed your view of the world and yourself in the worst way possible, I’ve instilled fear in you.
I’ve arrived at my old office, I’m not working with Teresa’s team but God isn’t kind enough to spare me entirely.
“Can I help you?” an all too familiar voice asks, breaking me from the report I was filling out.
I turn to see him, Patrick Jane, the man Teresa left me for, the man she wanted me to be.
“Jane.”
“Mike… Hello,” he welcomes awkwardly, surprised at my presence, understandable.
“I’m uh here consulting on a case, was a last-minute assignment,” I explain, avoiding the elephant in the room.
“Beard looks good.”
He’s starting to piss me off, I don’t know what he wants, if he wants me to beg for information about Teresa and make him feel like more of a man but he’s already won. He’s got the girl of his dreams; Teresa, and I have lost mine; you.
“It’s for an undercover thing,” I pause, he wants to acknowledge the elephant in the room, “so, you and her?” I finally ask.
He makes his way closer, “Yeah, um, I’m sorry we’d- we didn’t intend for it to happen like this.” He almost seemed genuinely apologetic, something I didn’t expect, I thought I’d come back here a hated man, not a pitied one. “I know the last thing on her mind was hurting you.”
The words hurt because it's exactly what I did to you, unintentionally hurt you, I never wanted to hurt you.
“I know that,” I respond quickly, trying to get this over with as soon as possible, trying to forget the pain I feel while here. My eyes dart around the room looking for an escape but there is none.
I take a breath, Teresa and Patrick, the perfect couple, will probably live a picturesque life like the one you and I planned together before I burned it to the ground.
“So do you have a plan?” I ask, thinking about the future I promised you and then tried to force upon Teresa. My tone and demeanour have become more hostile, not at Jane but rather at myself for losing the future I wanted.
“I- I don’t really understand,” Jane plays dumb, he wants
“Well, I was offering her a life,” a life I planned and built with you, that I wanted to fulfill with you, “a home, a family if she wanted it,” a home I wanted to come home to, to see knick knacks you’d decorate the place with, a home where you’d be at ease. A family we made together, maybe kids running around with sticky fingers or just gathered friends and loved ones around our dining room table. “A future,” that only has meaning with you in it. “Have you thought about any of that?” Does Patrick think about the very real future he has with Teresa? Because I think about the future I could have had with you every damn day.
“I haven’t thought that far ahead yet,” Patrick answers.
He has a real potential future with Teresa, they’ve known each other for years, and he hasn’t thought about what their future may look like, while I still dream about what our future could have been. I look back when I first started thinking about the future with you in it and panicked because I thought I was moving too fast and that if I voiced my thoughts I’d scare you away. Little did I know that you were thinking the same thing, secrets we each kept until one fateful night months down the line.
If Patrick doesn’t think about his future… what is it he wants from her? “Well… what’re you offering her?” I ask quizzically, confused about how a couple can seem to love each other so furiously and not think about their future together. Maybe it’s because Jane has never had to worry about his future romantically, he believes people will always be banging at his door to get a taste, “I mean other than Patrick Jane,” I add with venom, angry at the situation I find myself in in comparison to Jane.
We don’t get any further as Teresa’s lone voice pierces the silent room.
“Hey,” she says politely announcing her presence, clearing looking for Jane.
Jane excuses himself, passing Teresa while whispering some cute pet name. Teresa scans the room nervously as I approach, wanting to talk without listening ears hearing, she has the same question Jane did when he realized it was me.
“What’re you doing here?” she asks.
“I’m consulting on a case, just had to fill out a deposition,” I finish with a sad sigh. When I look at Teresa all I see is the pain in your eyes when I told you about her. Before, when I saw her and you disappeared from my mind, now? You’re all I can think about.
I don’t let her prolong the conversation, “anyway, it was good to see you, Teresa.”
“You too, Marcus,” she says meekly.
I acknowledge Jane with a curt nod and go to leave, happy to get out of the office. I'm about to reach the doorway and breathe a sigh of relief when Teresa calls out, “They’re still here,” she says with some urgency.
I stop in my tracks but don’t turn, I don’t know what she means yet or if she’s even talking to me, but then she says your name. I haven’t heard your name out loud in what feels like millennia, it’s sharp yet refreshing like ice. You don’t just live in my head, you’re still real, you still have a life to live that isn’t the fantasy in my head. I turn to look at Teresa, having so many questions I want to ask, to pick every bit of information she has about you but I don’t get the chance.
“I think it’d be good if you saw each other. Maybe buried the hatchet,” she says with a reassuring nod. Then she goes to the nearest table and begins writing on a scrap piece of paper. “I think you need it, the both of you,” she adds before joining Jane and leaving. The paper has a phone number. Your phone number.
– Second Person POV, Past –
Life had been… boring… grey without Marucs. You weren’t miserable, you’d found a new normal, a new baseline. You weren’t happy or sad, but not numb or robotic either… it was like you were just going through the days letting the wind blow you wherever but you also weren’t relaxed as that might suggest. You were in an in-between, neither here nor there. Until you’d gotten a text.
Your phone buzzed in the morning while you were getting ready for the day. The number wasn’t in your contact list but the message made it clear who it was from.
‘I thought you should know that Marcus and I have split. I’m telling you because he’s still living with the ghost of you, maybe you guys can work things out. -Teresa’
It felt like the text was supposed to bring you relief but it didn’t. It dwarfed you back to the melancholy feeling you were drawing in when Marcus first told you about Teresa. You didn’t think this was your chance to get him back, you didn’t feel bad that Marcus had made a mistake and still wanted you. You just felt small… your emotions were so big that you felt small.
You didn’t know what to say to her, you didn’t owe her anything but she wasn’t at fault for anything either. You settle on something that doesn’t focus on you, on what happened.
‘I’m sorry things didn’t work out for you. I wish you guys could’ve been happy.’
The text is heartbreakingly true. Marcus hurt you and you still loved him, always would, but because of that, you wanted him happy even if the cost was you. You accepted living a miserable life while watching him and Teresa get married, have kids, and grow old together, because at least then Marcus would still exist in your world even if you didn’t exist in his.
Nothing more came out of that text. You’re thankful for that. You got to truck on in your grey life and not be set back or thrown in a whirlwind.
– Second Person POV, Present –
As more time passed you healed. Your smile became less fake. You didn’t forget about Marcus but in a way… you did. Marcus didn’t rule over you as a gloomy cloud anymore. This was not a result thanks to you and you alone, you credit your therapist for a lot of it. Even though your therapist would tell you that you’re the one who sought therapy, that you’re the one who kept up with it, that you’re the one who did the work. And you 100% are that person, you are to thank them while also acknowledging the help their guidance provided.
You felt new like you’d broken out of the dead shell Marcus left you in. You’re on the way home from a decent day when you feel your phone vibrate in your pocket, you glance at it and see a number you don’t recognize. At first, you think it to be a scam but then your eyes skim the message and you know it’s not. You also know that whatever is within the text while requires your full attention so you pocket it and try not to overthink it for the time being.
You’re happy to get home, it finally feels like your safe space, the place where you're most comfortable. So once you drop your things you debate whether you settle in or read the text. You decide to settle in, you’ll feel better, you want to read it when the rest of the day and done. You unpack your bag and change while trying not to let your mind catch fire with anticipation.
Finally, you sit down and open the text.
‘I know this is random and we have no relation or obligations to one another but Marcus is in town. Patrick and I ran into him in the office, he’s in for a case. I’m not here to tell you that he looks miserable because he doesn’t but he’s… I don’t know, grown. And I know his actions still haunt him. I hope the two of you can meet, even just for coffee, to lay everything to rest.’
Her message is cordial and not pushy. It’s dawned on you since her last message that she’s so eager for you and Marcus to bury the hatchet because she saw his aftermath. You might have healed but he might not have, he might still have something to get off his chest. You don’t owe him anything to help him heal or clear his conscious. You don’t pity him or feel sympathy but you do still love and care about him, maybe not the same way you once did, but you still do nonetheless. You let out a loud sigh before you begin typing.
‘Do you have his number?’
‘No but I know how we can do this’
A little bit later you get a text from Teresa that tells you that you and Marcus will meet at a nearby lounge after work. From what she tells you, you think it sounds all too inconspicuous, like he’s being kidnapped but after some further discussion, it was the easiest way without getting anyone in trouble.
A few days later you find yourself putting more effort into your look. You tell yourself it isn’t for Marcus and it isn’t, you’re not trying to win him back with your looks, you just want to put your best foot forward with him. A small part of you is even excited, the old you that’s still with Marcus. Another louder voice is terrified. You think of him and worry that all you’ll be able to see and think about is how awful he left you, broke you. You put effort in to try and drown out the voices as well, you can’t feel bad when you look good right?
You make you’re way to the lounge at the set time, and see Marcus seated alone. You go to join him, your heart is in your throat and you suddenly feel nauseous. When Marcus sees you his eyes widen and he freezes for a moment before abruptly standing from his chair. He whispers your name in disbelief and his shocked reaction tells you that Teresa didn’t tell him you’d be showing up.
“Marcus,” a beat of silence, “I take it Teresa didn’t tell you I was coming?”
“N-no, no, she uh- said something about an agent and I meeting for a case, I-”
You can’t help but laugh at how nervous he is. You finally nod and explain, “yeah, no. That’s not what’s happening, umm, I was told you were in town and I was hoping we could meet and-” and what? I don’t know.
“Of course, yeah-” he agrees.
You smile, he looks good, he has some facial hair but it suits him. Then you realize that the two of you are standing awkwardly at a table, “guess I’ll take a seat,” you tease yourself.
Marcus moves and says he’ll help you, “oh no, I got it, don’t worry, sit down,” you reassure.
Finally, the two of you are seated and there is an awkward silence. Both of you try to start a conversation at the same time.
“Oh, sorry, you go ahead,” the both of you say at the same time. Which ends up in the both of you laughing.
Marcus feels his heart come to life again when he hears your laugh. He doesn’t realize how much he missed this, misses you. But if he is honest he knows he doesn’t deserve your smile, your laugh, your love. After, what he did he doesn’t deserve you, he doesn’t expect you to want him back either. Life feels more colourful than usual when he sees you but a part of his chest aches because he knows that this is no longer his, all because of him.
“How have you been?” you ask with a smile.
“Uh, good… I guess”
“You guess?”
“Yeah, I just… there’s been a lot going on between the move and then work and- you know, just busy,”
You nod solemnly, “I’m sorry about you and Teresa by the way. I really did want it to work out for you,”
Marcus can’t help but look away, filled with guilt.
“Yeah I don’t think I wanted wanted it to work with her…” he says quietly.
“What?” you ask with your brows furrowed.
Marcus looks away and clearly becomes nervous, “I didn’t want Teresa as Teresa. I… we got together and all I wanted was for her to be you. That… that was what ended our relationship, I was trying to make her into someone she wasn’t because she isn’t who I wanted.”
Oh, you think. “Oh…” you say aloud upon realization.
Marcus nods guiltily, “yeah… I hurt you and dragged another woman into the mess all for… something I still can’t quite understand.”
“Marcus… I’m sorry but we can’t- I’m just not-,” you sigh, “we can’t just get back together,” you explain painfully, both because you are reminded of the pain he caused and because it feels like you’re saying ‘good-bye’ to him again.
“Oh no no! I wasn’t implying that- I just, I needed you to know that… there was nothing ever wrong with you. You had everything I wanted and for some reason… I tried finding that in another woman…” Marcus explains.
You nod, a heavy silence covering the both of you.
“So are you staying or going to be around for a while?” you ask Marcus curiously.
“I’m not sure, until the case is solved for sure but… afterwards… I’m not quite sure what I’m doing,” Marcus scoffs at himself.
“Well… don’t stay away because of me.” you say softly, “I was able to find my peace and you deserve that too… and maybe if you’re going to be around for a while we can find time like this every now and again, and just get the closure we both need.”
Marcus’s eyes light up at the thought of seeing you again and his chest aches at the thought of being so close to you, living in the same city, but not being able to love you how he wants. He looks at you and sees a new person, a bright, smiling, lively person who isn’t letting their past haunt them and Marcus knows that that means the door for him is closed. It hurts but he doesn’t fault you, you deserve it and like you said, maybe he does too.

Upside Down - Will Byers Creation Powers
Let’s think about time freezing in the Upside Down. It seems to be frozen the day that Will went missing and, judging by the fact that Hawkins is always shown at night in the UD, at a certain time. Will went missing at night and so it makes it seem likely that it’s frozen at the exact time that Will entered the UD. How did this happen? If this is true then it’d make sense for him to have some sort of creation power.
Tumblr media
Throughout the show, canonically, emotion has been shown to be a source of power. El using powers through love and anger, with Henry using fear against others and hatred. So it’d make sense that due to Will’s heightened emotions and sense of fear when facing the demogorgon, his powers came through by accident. Almost like a defence mechanism which he’d be unaware of.
Tumblr media
By accident, he not only froze time but he also created a replica of the real dimension. The one place he knows inside and out, a replica of Hawkins. A way to navigate and to hide. His defence mechanism. We already know that Will is good at hiding and is clever, that’s shown in the show. He’s also artistic and loves creating things. His excellence for drawing is highlighted in the show many times, especially from Joyce and Mike. Therefore, creation powers does fit into the narrative.
Tumblr media
Lastly, building on the previous point, there have been hints throughout the show for Will not only having powers (which you can see in my previous theories), but also having some sort of creation power. Potentially being able to stop the Upside Down and to take control of it. Some hints include his drawings and parallels with Henry Creel, Upside Down campaigns and how they lead to real world events, and finally his character being Will The Wise.
Tumblr media
Will and El are going to save the day. El with her strength and belief, and Will with his creativity and heart.

whether or not mike is aware of his feelings for will, he’s fully conscious and certain of his lack of romantic love for el throughout s4 and these lines prove it:
“sometimes i think it’s just scary to open up like that. to say how you really feel. especially to people you care about the most. because, what if...what if they don’t like the truth?”
“and if i would’ve said that thing, then maybe she’d want me there with her.”
“she’s already beginning to understand she doesn’t need me. i saw it-- i saw it in her eyes, that last time we talked.” (from the official script)
i think the first line is pretty self explanatory but i’m still going to unpack it anyways. will was talking about his own experience, but we were meant to associate it with mike’s situation and read between the lines: that there was also a truth he was scared of admitting in fear of the other person not liking it. it’s a double meaning to show two people hiding their true feelings: will being scared of losing mike if he found out he loves him, while mike is scared he’ll hurt el and lose her the moment he says how he really feels, that he’s not in love with her.
i’m going to talk about how the other two lines correlate with each other and how it would make the pieces fall together perfectly. when mike said “the last time they talked”, he was talking about the fight they had about mike not saying ily to el. it’s curious then, that this is the specific moment he references as the turning point for el to realize she doesn’t need him. in his perspective, she realized she doesn’t need him right after it was proven to her that he couldn’t give her the kind of love she wanted. also, he says that maybe if he had said that “thing” aka telling el he loves her, she could have still wanted him to be by her side, she would still need him if he just reassured her of his romantic love.
now, if he was still having an internal debate and confusion about the true nature of his feelings for el, why would he be convinced of el not needing him anymore and ending things with him? why did he think their impending breakup was inevitable, if all he needed to do was gain the courage to say “i love you” so that he could keep her by his side? because he knew he was never gonna be able to verbally prove his love, he knew he wasn't in love with her. he was basically admitting defeat in that scene and and trying to accept that their relationship was about to be over because of his own feelings.
yes, mike is also dealing with his insecurities about self worth and thinking el sees him as a nobody, but it’s all the more reason why he believes that him not being able to love her romantically is the final nail in the coffin for their relationship. there seemingly isn’t anything else she needs him for but romantic love, he’s already just some random nerd next to her, and he can’t even reciprocate her feelings, the one thing she actively asked of him? his lack of self worth contributed to his gnawing anxiety of not being able to love her romantically. that’s why the storyline would make more sense if he already knows he doesn’t love her. he’s not still “confused” between will and el, he’s aware he isn’t in love with the person he's presently in a relationship with, whether or not he knows that he has feelings for someone else (though i personally believe he already knows he’s in love with will atp)

Will Byers Analysis - Between S3 & 4
Something I always think about, is how Will probably didn't even know Mike and El were back together at the end of season 3.
When they had last spoke, part of Will probably thought Mike was talking about something else, which is understandable bc both him and Mike were speaking in code, whether they realized it or not (I didn’t say it/You didn’t have to).
At the very least, Will thought things could go back to how they used to between them; friends (best friends).
When the Byers arrived to Cali, I imagine within the first day, or within the first few days after they settled, it was most likely Jonathan who made the move to phone the Wheelers to talk to Nancy.
Then maybe Will decided he would call Mike once the phone was free or even asked Jonathan to have Nancy just hand the phone to Mike so they could catch up too.
But once Mike got on the phone, something was off. He sounded kind of distant and awkward and it left Will feeling confused.
Maybe Will tried to chock it up as them just needing to get used to living far away from each other, since this distance thing was indeed new for them. They'd been friends for the last decade and hadn't experienced being apart for longer than a week (the week of his disappearance). So, it was bound to be a little weird, for a little while. Right?
But honestly, just thinking about their fight in s3 and the events leading up to it, I wouldn't blame Will for being slightly worried.
Before the rain fight, Will was putting almost all of the time and effort into their relationship. He was fighting for it and Mike was leaving him behind. And that really hurt Will.
And that's what's honestly so incredible about Will's arc in s4, because he's not putting himself through that again.
Yes, he's growing up and he's matured, but he's also come to accept that, based on Mike's actions as of recent (despite what he might have sensed from Mike over the years), those romantic feelings he has for him will NEVER be reciprocated. If he's lucky, Mike will still want to be his friend, and he would be relieved to stay in his life in that way if it's something Mike still wants.
(Which also makes the GA's argument about how they think Will's arc in s5 is going to be about him accepting that Mike will never love him back, fall flat??? Because, Will's already realized that, sis. S4 ending the way it did was in part to make as clear as possible to Will (the unreliable narrator) that Mike cannot love him that way... And so why the hell would s5 confirm that for a second (3) time now? Where is the shock? Where is the value? What is satisfying about that? And why do that, while also holding off on Mike finding out about Will's feelings until the very end? Like... just let that simmer for a second and think about what that actually means in terms of the story going in a satisfying direction that also manages to surprise you... there is literally nothing satisfying about proving Will 'I'm not gonna fall in love' Byers, right...)
So, after about a week since they last spoke on the phone since arriving, a bunch of letters come in the mail: one for Jonathan, four for El, and three for Will (you can probably guess who from the party didn't send a letter to Will...).
And it's as if Will's worst fears are being (re)realized.
In his casual letter exchanges between the party, he talks about DnD and a new art class he's taking with Dustin, joining the basketball team with Lucas and how everything she'd told him about California was right with Max. Super casual catching up with some of his best friends. And yet still, nothing from Mike, arguably his best friend.
And so Will is understandably devastated.
He doesn't understand. Or maybe he does, he just didn't want to believe it.
And so, how Will chose to go about his contact with Mike over the next 'year' makes sense to me (and I support him fully tbh).
I think Will's arc in s4 is beautiful because he has some of the best development of anyone on the entire show. He's not the gay kid being used as a plot device for a heterosexual couple (stay tuned for s5). If anything, we're seeing this character who tried his best to mend his friendship with his best friend (also secret first love) after Mike presumably rejected him (ITS NOT MY FAULT YOU DON'T LIKE GIRLS!), and so, Will is not going to put himself through that again.
He's not going to let himself have hope that there could ever be something more between them, even if he thought so many times before there were moments or signs that Mike could feel the same (BC MIKE DID!!). He has already accepted it's not possible.
He's not going to 'stand in the way' anymore. If Mike wants to be with El, he's going to support them, even if it hurts him and his own feelings.
It's tragic, but it feels so in character for Will and his qualities as a person.
I know a lot of bylers argue that both Mike and Will were in the wrong when it came to them both not staying in touch, and I do agree, completely actually. Especially knowing Mike tried to call Will. HE TRIED. So it's not like he didn't. The miscommunication trope is doing it's magic. We just have to accept that.
And so, fittingly, when confronted, Mike doesn't tell Will he called (a lot). He lets Will think that he barely called and deflects and pushes it back on Will. But then almost instantly, he regrets it. Because it's in this moment he's only now realizing that Will did want to talk and missed him and is quite literally confused why they're not best friends any more. And suddenly it's all clicking. He knows deep down Will has every reason to be insecure, to not reach out to Mike after what happened last summer. It's just that he also thought Will had every right to move on because why wouldn't he, what's so great about Mike? Will could have anyone? Mike was so distracted by his own insecurities that Will had inevitably moved on, while also trying to hide his feelings, that he didn't realize Will actually did miss him. They've both got it all wrong.
As of now, we don’t know for sure if Will called at all, and so me assuming he called first, is just that, an assumption. But I’m giving Will the benefit of the doubt here. (It's also likely the Byers would have called the Wheeler's first because they know their number by heart most likely, while the Wheelers would've had to wait to get their new number).
Based on the story presented though (Will's unreliable narrator POV), he had a lot more reason to doubt Mike wanted anything to do with him. Will literally spent all of s3 fighting for their friendship, even if it meant coming off as slightly clingy and annoying and ‘childish’. And look how that turned out?
What else was Will to do in this situation? Just repeat all of his behavior in s4?
Was he just supposed to call Mike first, write him letters first, even though Mike was showing repeat signs of wanting to distance himself from him again?
And so, Will waits. He waits for Mike to make the next move, just in case his insecurities are right and that Mike doesn't want them to be best friends like they used to be.
One evening, about a month since the move, the phone rings and Will answers it. It's Mike.
Will is obviously surprised and thrilled. They talk for a bit, and yeah it's awkward. But still, it gives Will hope.
Now, it's still not enough to give Will the confidence to reach out first, fearing he'll come off too strong and scare Mike away again, and so he continues to give Mike space. But that doesn't stop this gesture from giving Will the inspiration to try one more thing, one last ditch effort to save their friendship; he's going to make Mike a painting.
So, all while watching El receive a new letter in the mail every few weeks or so, with him and Mike talking once (or if he's lucky maybe twice) a month over the phone, Will spends his time working on the painting, knowing that Mike used to appreciate his drawings when their friendship was at its strongest. And so, maybe this will be the thing that finally fixes things for them once and for all?
All too soon, it's Spring break and they're at the airport waiting for Mike to land.
In the months leading up to their reunion, Will made sure no one saw the painting he was working on, least of all El. Not even because he was scared she might figure out his feelings, but because he wanted it to be a surprise. We also know Will presumably had no problem with the others seeing the painting eventually because he literally brought it to the airport for Mike to open in front of all of them? And so... to him this was clearly an attempt at platonic reconciliation, even despite Will having romantic feelings for Mike. What he wanted was their friendship back.
But suddenly, Mike is standing before him and Will is so excited he can't hold back anymore. I mean, he's been holding back for MONTHS and he just wants to hug his best friend.
But then Mike is being awkward again, almost like he doesn't want to even touch Will at all, contrasting greatly from the last time they hugged during their goodbye only just a year ago (6 months they're so dramatic, i swear).
All this does is prove to Will that, despite them apparently ending on good terms, it seems Mike is just repeating last summer all over again.
Understandably, Will jumps to this conclusion fairly quickly, as his insecurities are being proven right in real time. Mike doesn't want the friendship they used to have. He doesn't want to hug, doesn't want to write to him, barely even called despite writing El a book worth of letters. He wants to talk to and focus on his girlfriend and Will is just an afterthought now.
There's no way he's gonna want this? A painting? Not a chance in hell.
So when Mike points to it and asks him about it nervously, Will panics and brushes it off.
How could he be so naive. Mike is making it SUPER clear he doesn't care about him, not like he used to. And still he's holding onto some misguided hope that maybe there's still a chance for them to be best friends.
How could he be so stupid.

I think one thing that gets overlooked a lot (of course especially by melvins) is that in s3, Hopper NEVER instructed Mike to lie to El!!
All Hopper tells Mike is that they’re gonna have a talk and that he needs to follow Hop’s instructions if he wants to keep dating El but we as an audience never get to know what these instructions were. One thing that is clear though, is that while Hopper starts the lie about Nana being sick, he NEVER instructed Mike to continue that lie! Lying to El was Mike’s own decision!
And how do we know that? The very first scene we get of that conflict after the Mike/Hopper car scene is the one where Mike and El are on the telephone. Mike tells her that Nana is so sick and that he just can’t come over, and the first thing El tells Mike is: “But Hop said your Nana was fine?”. Hopper already debunked the lie about Nana! He already told El that Mike’s grandma is fine and that it was a false alarm!! He already cleared that all up and why would he do that if he had previously instructed Mike to keep up that lie?? Hopper wanted Mike to stop coming over every single day so if he had told him to lie to El, why would he debunk the lie and therefore undermine Mike’s credibility?? Making it harder for Mike to convince El that he can’t come over? This doesn’t make any sense
BECAUSE HOPPER DIDN’T TELL MIKE TO LIE!!!
My personal guess…
…is that Hopper told Mike to find a way to communicate to El that they can’t see each other every minute of every day without telling her that Hopper talked to him! To make it seem like Mike had this thought himself. But here’s where it gets complicated:
Imo Mike already knew that he’s gay but tried to change that about himself in s3. Mike tried to make himself fall in love with El and at the same time wanted everyone else to know that he’s “so in love” with her because what better way to convince yourself if not to convince everyone around you? Like, Mike genuinely hoped being gay is something he can grow out of so while Mike was of course actually genuinely trying, he was still putting on a performance and that performance would’ve evidently crashed if he expressed that he didn’t want to see his girlfriend everyday. And that’s the thing, I think that Mike actually didn’t want to see his girlfriend every day.
I say “girlfriend” and not “El” because Mike of course actually genuinely enjoys spending time with El, but since they never did anything but make out, Mike didn’t truly enjoy coming over. Mike obviously didn’t like making out which is why he’s pushing El away from him and breaks the kiss when the opportunity presents itself. I think this was partially done subconsciously though because while Mike was aware that he doesn’t like it, he still tried to change that! He actually put effort into this but as much as he tried to change himself to like it, he just doesn’t/can’t! He tried to force it but his body still subconsciously did what felt right to him.
So Mike already knew that he doesn’t like it, though he didn’t wanna give up on it because that would mean he failed at making himself fall in love with El/that he can’t change that he’s gay, and Mike simply wasn’t yet ready to fully come to that conclusion. He was afraid of fully acknowledging that this isn’t something he can grow out of, scared of people finding out, and including both of those things, his overall fear was to let the others down and disappoint them!! Mike felt like he’d be letting people down by not coming over, by not being in love with El, by being gay, simply by just being himself, so he’s not admitting to the fact that he actually does have his own motivations to not want to see El every day.
Mike was kinda in denial that he had his own personal motivations so he chose to blame it on difficult circumstances instead even though these circumstances do not exist [“Nana is sick”] He chose to lie. But El isn’t stupid so she immediately figured out that he lied to her and all of a sudden Mike disappointed her nonetheless! So what does he do? Apologize? No. He explains to El that this was actually all Hopper’s fault. Because Hopper did talk to him. Hopper did tell him to find a way to communicate to El that they can’t spend as much time together anymore. He didn’t tell him to lie but he did talk to him. So Hopper essentially became Mike’s scapegoat in this scenario. Instead of apologizing to El he blamed Hopper because he wasn’t ready to admit to El that this was his own fault! That he disappointed her and everyone else for that matter because he also was not ready to fully admit to himself that he can’t change what he is! But blaming it all on Hopper didn’t work either because El tells Mike that Hopper is right and you know what kind of impression that leaves on Mike? Even when others think that it’s not his fault they’re still disappointed in him because his actions aren’t the problem. He is.
So Mike’s next approach to an apology is going further with trying to change himself! Completely flipping everything upside down and telling El that he lied to her because “he loves her so much” which is utter bullshit and manipulative as hell! Like, Brenner literally says the same exact thing to El in s4!! But again, Mike knows that he isn’t actually in love with El, in his eyes: “yet”, but a part of Mike also already knows that he’ll never be because he’s gay and that’s not something he can grow out of. And that’s why Mike can’t bring himself to lie to her! He can’t bring himself to say the word “love” (“blank makes you crazy”) because he simply doesn’t love her romantically! And we know from the scene “I love her and I can’t lose her again” that Mike 1: refuses to lie specifically about being in love to El’s face, and 2: that Mike knows no matter the fact that he means the “i love you” to El platonically, everyone will still pick it up as him meaning it romantically which is why Mike cannot bring himself to even say it to El platonically anymore!!! (something that continues into s4).
Of course we also see this at the very end of s3 when Mike pretends like he doesn’t remember his “i love her and i can’t lose her again” outburst. Because no matter how much Mike tries to change himself to fall in love with El, the part of him that is well and fully aware that he can’t change the fact that he’s gay always wins over. And the most ironic thing is that Mike had hoped that a little more time would solve his problem! That a little more time is all he needs to fall in love with El! All of s3 Mike tried to get back on good terms with El so he can focus on falling in love with her again but once he finally is on good terms with El again, once El tells him that she loves him too, once she kisses him….. that’s when Mike realizes that this was in fact not the last missing piece for successfully growing out of being gay! No, it was quite the opposite. It was the last missing piece for fully realizing that this will never work! Being gay is what he is and not something he can grow out of! Time was never the problem. Mike is….
So my point is basically that the entirety of the melvin conflict in s3 literally would not have happened if not for the fact that Mike was already aware that he’s gay and in love with Will but partially dismissed it as a phase! Because Hopper never told him to lie to El, so what other reason does Mike “friends don’t lie” Wheeler have to choose to lie to El and then refuse to tell her why, if not that he has something to hide??

I don’t believe Will and Mike are gonna be outwardly canon in the sense they are in a relationship that everyone can see. Like… They’re not gonna hold hands in front of others and kiss, they’re not even going to be out to everyone the way I see some bylers predict. and I fear it’s gonna make people mad.
There’s so much lack of understanding from certain bylers about how bad it was in the 80s for queer people.
Here’s how I imagine it - Will probably comes out to Jonathan and Joyce. We’re already recieving that indicator that Jonathan knows, he’s just waiting for Will to be ready himself.
Mike comes out to Will. Maybe Eleven??? But, I doubt she’d care at all. I don’t think she has a conceptual understanding of Gay people due to being kidnapped for years and held away from society. She would see it just as any other Straight relationship. So I don’t think she’d care, she’ll just be mad he lied lol. So I don’t see a reason for her to be the one he comes out to.
I can’t imagine a coming out scene for Mike unless it’s with Will. I feel like there could be a indirect conversation like the Jonathan and Will scene in S4. I don’t know with who, personally I would love if it were Nancy, maybe even Robin if they met officially lol
Hmm.. To be honest, though… I think the idea that Mike having this emotional scene when he’s alone where he finally must accept himself feels more likely to happen over a coming out scene (that isn’t with Will). Or… He’s put in an uncomfortable situation that challenges his stubborn personality and must face his truth (Perhaps an encounter with Vecna…).
There doesn’t HAVE to be coming out scenes for him with family members, all his friends, etc., though. Coming out doesn’t have to happen right once you accept yourself. It happens when you want it to - When you’re ready. But of course, I’m not saying that if he DOES end up coming out to somebody that isn’t Will that it would be bad.
But in my prediction, they will share an onscreen kiss in a hidden place. But, Byler will keep things between them a secret from everyone… As you should expect. For everyone to know and for them to feel comfortable publically expressing their sexuality right off the bat is very unrealistic.

I can’t help but think about someone commenting on Tumblr that, although Daniel was (initially) the only one who really understands how dangerous Terry is, even Daniel doesn’t fully grasp how deep this goes (Lovely job in incorporating that in Mercy, btw) because he STILL doesn’t know about Terry having broken into his and Mr. Miyagi’s home in ‘85.
TBH, the Break-In didn’t really make sense when you think about the fact that Terry had access to top-notch PIs. Surely the kind of intel he could afford would have been thorough enough to include Mr. Miyagi’s enlistment in the 442nd and Medal of Honor?
I chalked it up to writers-screw-up since the script went through so many rewrites and whatnot. The script was basically held together by Elmer’s glue and hope.
But it worked well in fleshing out the character of Terry — because ultimately he didn’t NEED to break in. He wanted to.
Him breaking into the house (not to mention that fact that he was conducting business with his secretary and Mike Barnes from a bubble bath) is the first glimpse the audience sees that Terry’s always crossed boundaries, even when they clearly weren’t necessary.
So we see he was already a very intense (and unstable) guy to begin with.
Combine ALL THAT with the fact that something happened to him when he met Daniel - somehow he reached new levels. In his own words to Kreese, he was about to conquer the world, then he “went off the rails” with his stalking and terrorizing of Daniel… and then “hitting rock bottom” AFTER the tournament.
This is why your Mercy!Terry is so very consistent with canon Terry.
None of the “precautions” in keeping Daniel captive are necessary — the (no doubt) 50 guards roaming around… the cameras inside the room, and 24/7 techs watching… the restraints… the strangling unconscious (as even Terry admits)…
They’re all done for his own benefit.
Pacifying his own irrational fear was more important than not strangling Daniel unconscious and causing him physical harm.
Pacifying Kreese’s irrational temper tantrum was more important than not psychologically terrorizing and physically torturing an innocent teenager.
And ultimately having Daniel is more important than not destroying his life and causing him extreme psychological and emotional damage.
For all his talk about how important Daniel is to him, what’s really more important is Terry.
So big gay feelings or not (😂) I think you’re doing a great job of capturing the core of Terry Silver and how his intensity/instability bleed into how he loves. And poor POOR Daniel is the focus of that deranged love.
You poor POOR bastard!
Me personally - I don’t care that I’d be Mrs. Hot Billionaire, there’s no way I’d trade places with him. No amount of money or hot sex is worth THAT level of crazy! 😂
☝🏻☝🏻
That you so much - this is so lovely 😊
And yeah - I wouldn’t trade places with him either.
That’s a lot of crazy, even in a body that big 😆

I agree that Mike still hasn't had a realization moment, the moment he realizes will be the moment when the audience realizes at the same time imho, and tbh Mike's situation seems to be a parallel to Nancy's situation in the love triangle. Ofc the difference here is that Mike and Will have a mlm storyline, but the love triangle positioning is the same. Nancy thought he liked Steve and while she has some sort of an attraction towards him, she came to realize in S2 that she liked Jonathan instead. They are conditioned to be more compatible in terms of being in a relationship. And most 'Mike already knows he is gay/bi' readings stem from the S3 finale scene, but that moment seemed to be more about Mike being stunned and it inserting a *doubt* to the scene like you said, it's not about him realizing his sexuality or his feelings for Will. I feel like the way the writers are approaching this situation is making Mike and El's romance as a past thing (like Steve and Nancy's thing) and them portraying Mike and Will as a likelier and more compatible option (like Jonathan and Nancy). It seems like they're gonna give Mike a realization moment after El breaks up with him, and he'll have a moment similar to Nancy's in S2. And my controversial opinion here is that I think Mike will be easier to accept his sexuality and will be the one to act on his feelings easier, and that the writers won't portray him as secretly gay since I seriously do not think they're planning on completely discarding Mike and El's romantic relationship, but they're rather planning to make them incompitable and a past romance.
THISSSS 10000% agree. I don't think the "big bad" of Mike's story is internalized homophobia, I think it's change. I used to be a hard-core gay Mike truther, but now that just doesn't make sense to me anymore. Mike and El did love each other, but they just don't make a compatible couple. Their relationship problems aren't caused by Mike's awareness that he isn't in love with her, it's that they're just different people with different interests who want different things out of a relationship.
Same with S2 Nancy and Steve. Steve didn't realize that he was unintentionally hurting Nancy by trying to pretend they were normal or saying they shouldn't try and speak out about what the lab did to Barb. And Nancy thought she was in love with Steve, until she started hanging out Jonathan, who actually listened to her concerns, was able to understand how she felt, and aided her in getting the justice Barb deserved. I definitely think Byler is going to be a lot more like that.
I can totally see where people got the idea Mike's self-aware. But the more I'm looking at the scene, the more I think it's actually pointed a lot more toward showing how he's stuck in denial out of fear of things being different from what he's used to. "I've been stuck in one place" "If I'm being really honest, that's what scares me. I don't want thing to change" "That's why I came in here, to try and maybe stop that change" "Turn back the clock, make things go back to how they were" Him not being saying ily to El or kissing her back was a sign of him starting to doubt his feelings. Hopper's letter was honing in on the fact that he doesn't like the change he's feeling. He wants things to be normal. He's scared of what could happen to himself and his relationships if he accepts change.
I'm glad I'm finally finding some like-minded people out of this.

i was reading your bi mike analysis and i have one question (not related to if he is or not lol i don't think it's that important) you mention you believe mike still thinks he likes el romantically dueing the monologue, and my question is, seeing as the popular interpretation of the s3 ending is mike realizing he likes will the way he thought he liked el, what is YOUR interpretation of the scene ? (i'm genuinely asking ♡ i think it's very cool we all have different interpretations of different scenes)
Hello!! 💜
First of all thank you for taking the time to read my analysis, I appreciate it a lot!! 😊
Here's a video with the scenes I'm talking about for reference!
At the moment my personal interpretation of the s3 finale is that Mike is terribly scared of losing the people he loves and here he's starting to realize how heartbroken he's feeling because both El and Will are moving and leaving him behind and he's terrified of their dynamic changing and of losing them both...
I think for the kiss and the I love you he's simply shocked
Tumblr media Tumblr media
by the realization that El did hear what he said in the cabin and he's experiencing a sort of freezing response to that knowledge... because he wasn't anticipating her saying something like that to him!
I also think they were super awkward with each other because they didn't know where they stood in their relationship, they probably had not talked about it because they just... Don't talk about stuff often... I mean, they are 14 so I kinda get it because they are just kids playing at relationships and it is super awkward and overwhelming approaching these conversations when you're this young!
But still, even if they are awkward 14 yo it seems to me that in that scene Mike is feeling flustered because he does like her and wants to be cool in her eyes... but we can already see their relationships problems in s4 from that scene alone because Mike is acting like he is mentally telling himself he's an idiot after this thing he says to her and this particular exchange between them
Tumblr media
So we can already see how he feels deeply insecure in this relationship because he thinks that to look cool to El and to impress her he has to be more cool than he is, he has to change his character and become super funny and dress better etc etc, he does want to impress her because he does like her and he feels inferior to her, he puts her on a pedestal...
The reason he pretends he doesn't remember what he said was because he didn't want to tell her anymore... because of what Mike told us in s4 himself, he was feeling scared that if he was open with his feelings this would have just made it more difficult for him and more painful when she eventually would look at him and look at who he is and realize he is just a nerd and he's nothing special and she shouldn't like him... Because in his mind it doesn't make sense that El really likes him or even that she loves him... That is why he's shocked!
...
In this scene I think the narrative was focusing on Mike and Will because it was starting out the byler plot line officially and showing us that Mike does feel differently towards Will, he feels more deeply for him.. and he will miss him more than how you miss someone that is only a friend...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...
Tumblr media
This is not a realisation that he's gay or queer to me, this is utter heartbreak... It's like he wants to cry here but he's feeling so empty and numb that he can't even do that.
He's just wishing he could to back so that he doesn't lose him from his life...
Tumblr media
this whole scene focusing on Mike and then Will in the car and then Mike again, is showing us Mike's deepest fear of things changing and him losing the people he loves... and how losing Will in particular is breaking him down... (because deep down he loves him)
I think this was showing us that Mike is beginning to feel different towards Will and he's afraid of things changing between them and in general...
That's why in s4 he tries to hard to go back to being best friends and why he wants to fix his relationship with El even if he knows it's not how it was before that summer and he started to realize he is changing and feeling weird towards Will...
He wants to stick to the status quo with Will as his best friend and El as his girlfriend...
but the dynamic is changing he is slowly realizing him and El don't work well in s4 and he wasn't sure of wanting to tell El the I love you, he was avoiding it because of the reason he told us... and that is the truth, but that's not the WHOLE truth deep down... even if him as a character right now is confused about what he feels and believes he is in love with her
The whole truth is that he wasn't sure anymore before Will made his speech in the van and made him believe El knows him like that and loves him like he wants her to love him, like she sees him as the heart of the group too and needs him like he feels he needs her... (A LIE BECAUSE THOSE ARE WILLS'S FEELINGS)
So he wasn't sure before that, he was confused and he was thinking about it in his mind and trying to just find the courage to tell her the ily but like he said:
"I just don't believe it."
He didn't believe it was safe to tell El and be vulnerable with her... Who made him believe it was? Will using his own feelings!
Also the rule for Mike in his head is that he shouldn't lie about things this much important... So if he doesn't feel 100% secure about a thing he WILL avoid it... Until he does feel secure
He also at the same time is feeling super weird and awkward with Will in s4 because he already has feelings for him and attraction to him but he doesn't realize it yet consciously why he feels like this... He is acting jealous and feeling weird things that make him look at Will when he's not looking and then panic in the desert lmao
Tumblr media
Hope this is clear!! It's a mix of very deep and complicated feelings Mike has for both Will and El...
with El he does like her and he did have infatuation for her but the relationship just doesn't work because of his insecurities and because they are incompatible
with Will he is slowly beginning to realize he does have feelings for him but he's pushing back because he is terrified of change and it's super hard admitting to yourself that you do see your best friend in a different way and you like him in a non straight way especially in the 80s
But all of this is a tangled mess in Mike's head for now, he's not 100% aware of why he does what he does... He's thinking about it and learning new things about himself this season and he's 14 so it's super normal that he doesn't know how he feels for sure yet
Feelings are a mess and when you're bi I think it's even more difficult because he probably thinks well I do like women so I can't like Will like that because I'm not gay...
So yeah, that's it for me!!
Babygirl is confused 😂😂😂
Thank you so much for reading all of this, as always this is my interpretation of the show if you think differently that's ok!! 💞
