It's that time of year again: time for the sign-ups for the Dokuga Holiday Exchange!

GUIDELINES PART II

- The whole point of this is to be a gift exchange. To get a gift, you must give a gift. If you drop out or disappear, your gift will be given to the group as a whole. Those who disappear without word will be banned from the exchange for one round.

- The story/art must be centered around the Sess/Kag pairing. It doesn’t necessarily have to be focused on romance - it can be based on first impressions, friendship, even some sort of hatred. Side pairings are fine, just as long as it focuses on the relationship between Sesshoumaru and Kagome. This is a Dokuga Holiday Exchange, after all!

- Gifted works must be new to the exchange. Sequels to previous works, new chapters to a current story, ‘deleted scenes’ from other stories, or anything related to any of your previous work isn’t allowed.

-The story/art can be any genre, though you should go by the prompts given to you to make your best judgment. If your prompts are vague, do your best to work with them. But please pay attention to what is requested to stay away from. If a platonic relationship is requested, do not give a romantic one. If you have any questions about the prompt requested, you can always ask me for clarification, and I will pass your question or concern on to the appropriate person. Please DO NOT contact your giftee directly as your giftee is not supposed to know who the gift is coming from.

- All ratings are welcome, but if you have a rating that you refuse to write or wouldn't like to receive, please make note of it whenever you sign up.

- When working on your piece, please keep in mind what the recipient wants. If they ask for certain things to be used or not used, please follow them. Usually, there is nothing demanding in the requests; mostly just small things like the type of relationship or universe.

- If you are new to the exchange, please provide a link to a story (in any fandom) that you’ve written that is more than 1500 words. Drabble collections do not count. You can link to a one-shot or even an incomplete epic you’re currently working on, just as long as you can prove that you can meet the word count minimum.

- There will be a three strikes policy. I simply do not have the time to go chasing after everyone who signs up for the exchange, therefore there will be a three strikes policy as far as contacts/behavior go. If you ignore/fail to answer any correspondence within one week of sending, you will have a strike against you. Three strikes, you’re gone from the exchange.

- Please add the exchange email ([email protected]) to your contacts so you can avoid anything from us hitting the spam filter.

Explanation of Age Statement:

Again I will be asking for a statement of age (example: ’I am over the age of 18’/’I am under the age of 18’). The purpose of this is to prevent minors from gifting or being gifted with works that are rated MA. The official rule on Dokuga is: ONLY users ages 18 and up may read or post MA rated work, 16+ for rated M. As this exchange is affiliated with Dokuga, I will be following the same rules on ratings as are followed at the main site. That being noted, if you falsify your age statement you will be removed from the exchange and receive an email notifying you why you were removed.

- Real life does get in the way sometimes, so if you have to drop for any reason please let me know as soon as you possibly can. I understand that you’ve got other obligations, and am not going to be angry with you should something come up. The code word is oak tree. I will be angry, however, if you’re putting things off and finally fess up after your second extension and the posting date is looming. Should you drop, with or without word, the gift prepared for you will be shared for the group as a whole.

- It is your responsibility to have your story beta read before you send it in. We are looking for stories that are in their final polished form, not something that is hot off of the press. I simply do not have the time to beta every story that comes in. If you do not have a regular beta, you can look for someone on the Dokuga Forums, or on the SessKag Discord servers.

- Should a story come in that does not meet the requirements, the mods reserve the right to reject the piece and ask you to correct it. Ignoring this request is grounds for your removal from the exchange.

- Stories should be sent to the exchange email, [email protected]. Either attach in .rtf format, as a googledoc, or add it directly into the body of the email. If anything is sent in any other format, you will be asked to send in the preferred formatting.

- No posting of stories elsewhere until after the big reveal on New Year's Day. The whole point of a secret gift exchange is to keep it a secret. I will let you know when it is clear to post your stories on your own sites.

- Keeping with the above statement, please don’t give out the name of who you are doing a gift for. Blowing the secret ruins the fun!

wattpad vs. ao3

so this is an examination of Wattpad as an alternative to Archive of our Own, largely in response to the ongoing criticisms of AO3 when it comes to their content policy and what’s permitted onsite in terms of tropes and ratings. I’m not going to be talking about anything in the context of the completely separate and justified debate about how Archive staff handles racism and racist harassment. First off, I agree that AO3 needs to take more action against racist commenters and stories intended to harass fans of color (I’ve received a few comments like that myself) and second off, I don’t know how Wattpad handles racism.

I’m pro-AO3, but I do believe that if people have problems with AO3, they should be free to leave the platform and find something that suits their needs and wants better, and no one has brought up Wattpad in these conversations, which I think is a shame.

Wattpad:

commercial site with ads and a premium membership option

general fiction focus with fanfiction section (not a dedicated fic archive)

mobile-friendly with a dedicated app on App Store and Play Store

basic user tagging (think Tumblr, Instagram) with some native filtering

allows for user blocking

community forums on-site with direct messaging feature

RTF-only text input (no HTML editing)

native image support, including gifs and video files

ability to upload custom art in-story and as a cover for your fic

no native self-archiving/story download feature unless you’re the author

extremely large userbase, with popular fics getting hundreds of thousands of hits regularly

comprehensive rating system, with fics expected to be tagged and rated and warned for accordingly. option given to opt out of warnings and ratings entirely with “Unrated” and “Choose Not To Warn” categories

will rarely delete stories, and will never do so without warning and emailing the author a copy of their fic along with an explanation for why it was deleted

Wattpad’s Content Policy:

The full policy is linked above, but Wattpad explicitly bans underage sex, purely pornographic content, graphic self-harm, suicide, hate speech, underage sex where one party is younger than sixteen (the age of consent in Canada), sex with animals, revenge porn, sexual solicitation/roleplaying, and harassment of other site users, among other things. Stories cannot focus on sexual violence in a positive way, and sex scenes must meet content standards even in mature-rated stories. This is in contrast to AO3, which (as stated above) doesn’t have bans against any of this. Their TOS FAQ is linked here, and contains extensive discussion of their content policy, while affirming that they believe in the user opting out of content they dislike rather than banning that content on principle. I can confirm anecdotally that they do take action against embedded photographic images of illegal pornography, but that’s the only ban they seem to have.

My final conclusion is that abandoning AO3 for Wattpad sacrifices user friendliness and an extremely comprehensive tagging system that will get you exactly the results you want for a heavily moderated, much less risky experience that has sitewide standards designed to protect users from graphic or controversial content. Both have fun interfaces, and both are easy to use, but I personally would recommend the latter site to anyone who felt AO3 was too free and open with the kind of stories it permits on its site.

This might be more of an in-depth programming question, but when I interned at a studio, they had a lot of internal standalone tools for designers or other programmers to use (e.g. an animation previewer, or a dialogue tool). How do programmers make these tools that interface with the engine and other software like Maya?

Whenever a program loads a file, it expects a specific file format for the type of file it is loading. For example, a bitmap (BMP) is literally a map of bits. It starts with a header section that declares file info like how big the image is, and then it goes into a list of RGB values for each pixel in the bitmap. If you have the size of the file and the pixel color data, you can reconstruct the entire image in any app that can read the file and understands how the data are arranged in the file. If the file data don’t match the expected format, the result may not work. This is why many other programs can read multiple file formats - Microsoft Word can read DOC files, but can also read XML files, HTML files, TXT files, RTF files, PDFs, and more. It’s because each of these file types has an established file format that the programmers decided to make Microsoft Word able to read and parse.

Similarly, game engines also read asset data files. A 3D model from Maya is really just a collection of vertex and polygon information. A texture map is an image with some additional mapping data of pixels to vertices on a 3D mesh. An animation rig is mostly a collection of polygon-to-bone mapping data combined with bone movement constraints. An animation is mostly a series of bone positions at specific times. As long as our programmers know how those data are laid out in those specific files, we can make the game engine understand what those data mean. And... if we know how to make the game engine read files in that file format, we can also build other more lightweight tools like animation previewers to read those same file formats and manipulate them.

I’ve worked with tools that allowed me to do more than just previewing animations - they allowed me to attach collision spheres on specific bones in specific animations on specific frames for purposes like the player attacking. We can then create a new file that stores which animation bones that collision spheres attach to on which specific animation frames, and then the game engine can read that data to know when to make attacks active based on animation data. We also made that tool mark which animations can be interrupted during which frames to create attack combo strings - Attack Animation A can branch to combo extender B between frame 35 and frame 60, which can then branch to combo finisher C or combo extender D between frame 24 and frame 56. This means that this tool can be used by combat designers like me to take the animation data from the animators and create and tune cool attacks and combos with the tool for use in game. This is just one example of things programmers can enable when they know how asset data get laid out in a file.

I’ve been working on getting my old blog’s stories (or at least the ones I could save, or already had on my computer) and the shorter one I wrote on tumblr proper are getting to be a huge goddamn nuisance because I saved them in RTF format, in wordpad, to save them as quickly as possible

the problem there?

it screwed up the formatting something awful. no italics or bolding, and i use those a LOT in my style of writing. combine THAT with the fact that wordpad is super screwy when it comes to uploading to tumblr, so i’m having to run a few different things in order to get that fixed: i have to manually copy/paste them to a new google doc in order to deal with the spacing problem, otherwise i would have to manually remove all the spacing just so its not crunched up or triple spaced when uploaded here

its requiring a lot of work even before i get back to formatting it, properly, and its just, it is really, REALLY tedious and irritating and thats why i haven’t really made much progress re-uploading much. it takes FOREVER and i do NOT have the patience for it. i dont even have the patience to make pancakes in the morning, much less all this, bleh

What is More to Love? More to Love: A Fat Gum Fanzine is a full color, collaborative fanbook, featuring illustrations, comics, and prose from MHA fans focused on the character Toyomitsu Taishiro, also known as BMI Hero Fat Gum. For more info, check the About page!

Who are the editors for this book? There are two editors for More to Love: A Fat Gum Fanzine: Rel (tumblr user @relemenopy / @glitterntrash ) Stephy (twitter user @stephyhime ) Why is there a preorder period? Even though there is an existing budget set aside for this project, by opening up preorders this allows us to offset the cost of printing. The funds from preorders will go towards the cost of having the books and merchandise printed, and also towards compensating our contributors. Any funds that exceed a certain amount will be donated to Feeding America.

Will More to Love be available in digital format? Yes! PDF copies will be available at a discounted rate (since there is no cost for printing or shipping); however the PDF copies will be sent out to coincide with the shipping of physical copies. Is it okay for an artist and a writer to collab? And will you set up any collaborations between artists and writers? Artists and writers will have the option to work together; however it is not required. Once we have confirmed all of the contributors; artists will have the option to review writers’ summaries and choose if they wish to create accompanying illustration. Can I contribute to More to Love anonymously/under a pseudonym? Yes, although we do ask that you at least share a name, nickname, or pseudonym with the editors so that we have something to call you! However when it comes to publishing/information posted on More to Love’s social media, you will have the option at the start to let us know if you wish to remain anonymous or to work under a pseudonym. More to Love absolutely will not post any of your information either in print or online without your permission. How will contributors be compensated? All contributors will receive a copy of the book itself, as well as the option to purchase additional copies at a discounted rate. Illustrators will receive a rate of $30 per illustration; comic artists will receive $25 per B+W page or $30 per color page (it will be up to the artist whether they wish to work in B+W or in color); prose writers will receive a flat rate of $45. All participants will have the opportunity for bonuses depending upon the success of the preorder period (a further breakdown of possible bonuses will be forthcoming, but for the meantime think of it similar to how many Kickstarters set up stretch goals for after they hit their initial funding goal). Are traditional works okay? Yes! So long as you are able to scan or otherwise photograph said works, and are able to send them digitally per the technical specifications. Will this book contain any ships? Yes- although shipping is not the focus, all ships are welcome. Can I send in multiple applications? Yes! There will be three different application forms for contributors; one for comics, one for prose, and one for illustrations. Each individual may submit up to two applications for each type, for a total of six possible proposal submissions. There will also be a fourth application type for graphic designer, and again you can also submit to this as well as to the other applications. Will there be any sort of extras/additional merchandise? Currently More to Love is still in the planning stages and so the short answer is: maybe. There are currently plans for possible charms, stickers, buttons and other items. More information about merchandise will be made available before preorders open in February. How will you be sending communications to creators? The main form of communication will be via email. All contributors will be expected to respond to any emails regarding More to Love within 5 business days; however if there are any contributors who have alternate preferred methods of communication then that can certainly be discussed. We will also set up a discord server for the purposes of this project; however participation in the discord server is purely optional. What will be the final size/file specs for More to Love? The final print size will be B5 international paper size, which is a standard size for doujinshi. B5 measures at 176 x 250 mm, or approximately 6.8 x 9.8 in. All art files must be delivered via dropbox in CMYK at 300dpi or higher, in .tiff or .psd file format. All artists will receive a template to work from. All prose works must be delivered via dropbox in either .txt or .rtf file format. All formatting for prose pieces will be handled by the editors, so that they have a uniform appearance throughout the book. How many creator spots are you looking to fill? We are looking to fill about 3-6 writer spots and 10-15 artist spots, as well as 1 graphic designer. Can international creators participate, and will books be shipped internationally? Yes, international creators and buyers are quite welcome! How many pages will More to Love be? More to Love will be printed as a perfect bound paperback book, with around 30-40 interior pages. Is it okay to depict Fat Gum in different sizes? What about hair color? Fat Gums of all sizes are welcome! Fatphobic content or sentiments will not be tolerated. RTF DATING SIM (HELPERS/DISCORD CHAT/ AND MORE)

Hello everyone! Now, if you’ve been following me or seen my previous posts you know that I am working on a Real Time Fandub dating simulator! Now, I understand I’ve been on a hiatus for a while. And unfortunately, there’s nothing really to blame but myself on that part. So, I am now going to continue my work on the dating sim, but I need your help to make it possible!

Now, I’m aware that some of the people from RTF have seen my post and I am so happy that they are supporting the idea. It’s really cool! And I would love for you guys to help voice acting in it.

That being said, I also will need help of some other people so I can make it possible. I will need things like programmers, artists, voice actors, and anyone else who can give to the project somehow!

UGGGHHHH Tumblr deleted my entire response, so I’m going to just jot out what I remember.

Depending upon how long you’re willing to spend, a LONG time. You guys have NO idea how much work it is, and how much off-tumblr time I spend doing it. When I keep saying “it’s a full time job” it really is. The blogging you guys actually see takes about 2 hours, from filing my blog to answering a few asks here and there, but the rest is ALL filing my fics and creating lists.

Now, mine is “perfected to my liking” after two years of trial and error and headaches, but yeah, if you’re serious about becoming strictly a fic rec blog, prepare to put in a lot of time and effort. BUT to be fair, I’m ridiculous in my sorting and organizing... I have a weird OCD thing where I need stuff sorted in a certain way, and it takes longer than it probably should. But it works for me and it has become very streamlined now that almost all of my Ao3 bookmarks are finally sorted. In the beginning, when I decided I would start reccing fics, it was only meant to be a here and there thing, but then people kept coming to me more and more and that’s when I decided I needed to keep an offline list. So here’s some tips from me to you:

Keep offline lists. Tumblr fucks up enough that you WILL lose interest in redoing a big 50-fic list if tumblr decides that nope, today I don’t feel like posting your file because you didn’t refresh your page BEFORE typing it out.

Going along with the above, keep an offline masterlist of your read-and-tagged fics. All the recs I give you guys? They’re all on one of three list masterlists I have offline: GO Recs, FFNet Recs, and Ao3 Recs. This will be SO much easier for searching for topics when making new lists.

Do the lists WAY ahead of time. This has given me back many-a-Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights because I prep my lists ahead of time.

Develop the “public” system of filing for your things, and use that for your Masterlist, so you don’t have to redo it every time (so like don’t have just Ficname by author if that’s not what you want to do for your recs). For example, my system is this, emphasis included: Fic Name by Author (Rating, wordcount, Chapter count || WIP/AU if applicable || PODFIC LINK if applicable || list of personal and/or author tags here, even if they spoil the story; i’ve found some people with triggers appreciate that I tag EVERYTHING I find in the stories) – Author’s description or personal description if there isn’t one. Series link if it’s part of one. This way, all I have to do is copy-paste it into new documents for each list, and then copy-paste the whole list into the Tumblr doc.

Also, re: the above, do the layout in Tumblr if you’re doing a Tumblr rec blog. It keeps the formatting consistent and I don’t have to fix it between Ao3 and FFnet if I just copy-paste everything into a blank Tumblr doc, and then copy paste THAT onto the masterlist. Trust me on this one.

Draft everything. This goes along with all the above. I always “start” a list and put a big header so that I can find it in my drafts (that’s why they have the big bold H1 headers on them) and then hit “draft”. Then keep a list of your drafted fics in your preferred method of organization. I keep everything in Text Edit RTF files. I believe Alexx told me once she did spreadsheets. Either way, develop a system BEFORE jumping into this thing, because you will EASILY get overwhelmed if you aren’t used to high-stress levels.

Tag fics as you read them. Trust me on this one. Because it will save you MONTHS of re-reading every single bookmark so you can properly file fics. I do this on my Notes App with the story title, and then all the tags I know are popular requests or are for lists I know Nonnies have asked for.

Keep CONSISTENT in your tags. Don’t tag one thing O!verse but another Omegaverse. I had to redo a lot of my older tags because CMD+F was pointless on a document I purposely made to streamline the process.

USE Ao3′s TAGGING FEATURE for your bookmarks. Just make sure that if any of your tags are spoilerific, make sure you keep the rec private.

File EVERYTHING as soon as you bookmark it. It will save you a LOT of hours of going through all your recent bookmarks to file them.

That said, HAVE A FILING SYSTEM if you’re keeping everything offline. Keep separate documents for each list... Trust me on this. I used to just have one document each for Fluff fics, for example, and put subheaders in them, and it just got messy and annoying as my fic reccing became more common and plentiful. Instead, have a nice list like this, for instance:

The grey dots next to some of them are old filing methods that I need to fix and pull out. Also, as you can see, every time I finish a list, I file it into Posted and start a new list appended with a Pt number. It just keeps the system moving smoothly. I also have a system for the coloured dots; Grey is Old and refile, Orange is drafted on Tumblr, and Orange and Green means it’s drafted and ready-to-post.

That also has a system as you can see, but it keeps me knowing what I’ve already got drafted on Tumblr if I forget to tag the files with the colour dots.

It looks tedious and complicated, but I promise you, it’s really simple once you’re familiar with my method. Which is why I’m saying, you need to develop this kind of system REALLY early rather than 2 years later like I did. This drafted posts list is only recent as of... February I believe is when I started it.

Hmmm. Ah, yeah, so you can see it’s a lot of work, and this is why I absolutely dislike HateAnons negatively criticizing my lists, because it IS a lot of MY free time, between 8 and 48 hours a week. But if you truly enjoy sorting and organizing like I do, it’s a bit easier to cope with. So, yeah, whenever I tell you guys “I need some time away” this is why, and usually I switch to playing video games or doing art, both of which I miss doing on the weekends. I’m trying to keep the Tumblr stuff to mostly Weeknights these days, so that it’s an extension of my day job. Funny how I have less free time working at home than I did when I wasn’t; because I feel obligated to always be on my computer now, and I hate that. Like right now, I just bought 2 new games to play and I haven’t tried them yet because I’m always working both day-job stuff AND Tumblr stuff on weekends.

So yes, that’s another tip: Don’t let it consume you, and set a schedule. Don’t feel obligated to answer every request. When I am tired and I just genuinely don’t have the energy to dig through 1000+ fics to find 2 or three for an obscure ask, I usually make it an interactive ask – not only does it encourage community involvement and a sense of belonging for everyone, but I also discover new fics to read too! I am IMMENSELY proud and happy that my fic lists have essentially become “fic exchange” grounds. Before it was only on one or two lists, some timid new authors added their fics to my big lists, but now, since people SEE that I add their fics hidden in the notes to the main post, now everyone is happy to share their faves on the main lists AS WELL AS the smaller single asks. I like to think of myself of a “curator of happy things” so that’s what I like to do with these.

That said, you have to also decide if you’re going to be this interactive as well. Because that adds an ADDITIONAL hour or so as you make a separate “MFL” document and file those too. It’s time consuming, but totally worth it because if I’ve read the fic, all I have to do to that post in my MFL list is add my tags and file that block of text :)

I think this really needs to addressed, there are a few popular vegan youtubers that I'm sure you are aware of who all promote a different vegan diet. E.g; rtf, mostly fruit, hclf, wslf, junk food vegans, etc. young girls get so confused with what is food they should and shouldn't eat and may develop eating disorders and even fear certain foods. I have seen this with some of my close friends and it is sad :( what do you suggest? Just pick one youtuber and just watch them and not the others?

its not limited to just young girls & certainly not to veganism. In fact a recent study showed vegans were less likely to have disordered eating.

We have an RD for WSLF group members and are looking to affiliate with an MD who can do remote evaluations, as well & an Eating Disorder Psychologist. We have a monthly budget for helping our community who can’t afford it. You can learn a lot from every flavor of the Whole Food Plant Based Movement. We are horrified at the underbelly of disordered eating we have been exposed to & want to do everything we can to help. We take specific steps in WSLF to make sure anyone with a low BMI understands they need to follow a High Carb / High Fat diet. We have done everything we can to ensure it does not become an obsession even writing in the WSLF guide pg 108;

“WSLF is not a religion.We don’t seek to judge one another on how “whole” we eat. It's aspectrum based on health goals and shouldn’t get in the way of celebrating holidays, birthdays andspecial occasions. Even though we strive to celebrate without oils, we definitely enjoy whole fatsand sugars for special occasions. Being too steadfast about a lifestyle can be unhealthy in itself.Wewant you to live a little, try a fun new vegan product and then do your best to make a healthyversion. At some point in the distant future, we will all be celebrating with healthy, "wholer" foods.For now, being able to loosen your belt for celebrations helps draw more people in rather thanbeing that weirdo in the corner with a bowl of beans and a spoon you brought from home.”

And our motto is “we don’t restrict we replace” along with following the USDA Dietary Guideliness and Shift Patterns to help our community eat healthier. Here is a breakdown of very similar plant based diets that have been around for ages & don’t have youtubes. You can focus on the differences or the similarities, its up to you. I promise if you war out the differerences you’ll be miserable, though.

We have a very conscious membership base in our WSLF group that help respond & we are always on the lookout for restrictive behaviors. The saddest part is that many of these people that post Anon Asks on Tumblr to many people in the vegan community are children. It is totally heart breaking. If you have a problem and are reading this you need to talk to your parents, family, friends, there is nothing to be ashamed of other than not seeking help as soon as you possibly can. Next week is National Eating Disorder Awareness Week.

If you are having trouble evaluating the different advice patterns we highly suggest talking with your parents and perhaps convincing one of them to take the ECornell Plant Based Nutrition Courses to help you navigate to a logically and science supported diet or even taking it yourself for college credit if possible. A properly planned vegan diet has the preponderance of scientific evidence supporting it. Mrs Vegan & I advocate for such a vegan diet.

Hinata and Yukki are both tied up so I'm not sure what they can do together behind Yuno's back but I know a foreshadowing shot when I see one for all that this anime keeps genuinely surprising me with twists, it does take care to make the events easy to follow, and I like that this is Quality Storytelling
