Hell to Pay
Prompt Day 26: "Who did this to you?" | Word Count: 1000 | Rating: M | CW: Aftermath of Off-Screen Violence, Injuries | Tags: Post S4, Eddie Munson Lives, But Hawkins is Shitty to Him, Established Relationship, Uncle Wayne & Steve, Hurt/Comfort, Steve POV
"If they don't pull this off, I'm done with them," Steve says, and Wayne laughs.
The damn Pacers are trying to kill them both this year. It's been a losing year, and they can't seem to dig themselves out of this hole they're currently in. But Wayne and him keep watching games together, hoping they'll somehow turn it around.
Steve starts to say something else, when he hears the van pull up in the driveway, but it doesn't sound right. It came in too slow.
So, Steve gets up to peek out of the window, just to get a look at what's going on, and sees Dustin getting out of the driver's seat, which is not cool.
But then he sees Dustin racing towards the other side, and Eddie is leaning heavily against Dustin's side, as Dustin tries to help him towards the front door.
Steve's stomach drops.
"Wayne," Steve says, and that's all Wayne needs to hear to be on his feet, too. Both of them hurrying onto the porch, and down the steps.
"Who did this to you?" Steve yells as he reaches their side, taking over for Dustin.
Eddie doesn't answer, and Steve wants to grill Dustin, but Dustin's crying, nearly hysterically, at Steve's side. He can't deal with both of these things at once, and Dustin looks okay. Just upset.
Eddie is very clearly not okay.
Wayne is helping, too, and Steve thinks maybe they're headed in the wrong direction. Maybe they need to be going to the hospital, right now. Eddie's face. It's…bad. It's all bad, and Steve feels tears stinging his own eyes.
"You're okay, kid," Steve hears Wayne saying, and Steve doesn't think that's true, "We're both right here, now."
That is true, at least.
They ease him down onto the couch, and Steve crouches between his knees, gripping his thigh with one hand, the other hovering above his face, not touching him, not wanting to hurt him further.
"What happened?" Steve asks, softly. Gentle.
Wayne is in the kitchen running the water, and he shows up with a wet washcloth, and starts gently dabbing at the blood. Trying to get a better look at the damage.
"Got jumped," Eddie says, and it clearly hurts his battered mouth.
"I'm calling Hopper," Steve says.
Eddie has just wanted to ignore the vitriol that has been hurled his way, even after his name was cleared. But this? This is too far. Way, way too fucking far. Steve's gonna kill someone.
"Steve, no," Eddie says, "'m fine. Honest."
He's not fine, that's for goddamn certain.
Steve stands, lets Wayne move closer to work, and snags Dustin by the arm.
"Henderson, what happened?" Steve asks, and Dustin is just shaking his head, trying desperately to stop crying.
Steve just pulls him to his chest, hugging him tight, "You did good, kid. You brought him home."
And Dustin just cries harder.
"Steve?" Wayne calls out, and Steve lets go of Dustin and heads back towards the couch.
"This needs stitches," Wayne says, "a butterfly won't cut it. We better take you in."
Eddie is shaking his head, adamantly, "No. You do it."
"It's your face, kid, not your finger," Wayne says.
Steve knows the story. Eddie cut his finger opening a can of cat food a few years ago, and Wayne stitched it up for him. Using his skills from the war. Calling in a favor from the health nurse, getting her to drop by the trailer to give Eddie a tetanus booster right at home.
Eddie doesn't do hospitals. Not since his mom died.
But tonight, Steve thinks maybe they need to make an exception. This is different. This isn't a couple little stitches in the finger of a stubborn teenager.
This is a split across his cheek.
He needs a doctor, not homespun stitches.
But Eddie's never gonna accept that, not without a huge fight, so it's just Wayne and Steve staring at each other, trying to make a decision.
"Steve…" Eddie says, pleading with him.
"Can we please take you to the hospital? Don't make Wayne stitch up your face," Steve says, gently touching Eddie's hair.
Every time they see the scar it would undoubtedly leave, they'll have to remember this night, and none of them want that.
Eddie looks in Steve's eyes, then Wayne's, and finally nods. Consenting to the right decision.
Steve leans down and kisses him on the top of the head.
"Can I shower first?" Eddie asks, and Steve looks at Wayne, and Wayne nods.
Steve helps Eddie up off the couch, and down to the bathroom. Gets out a couple clean towels, a dark washcloth, and undresses Eddie. Then himself, stepping into the shower with Eddie. Gently helping him wash his bleeding face, his probably broken nose. His matted, tangled hair.
Eddie finally cries, here in private, and Steve presses kisses into his shoulder, his chest, right over his heart.
"I'm so sorry this happened," Steve says, and Eddie steps into his arms, and lets the warm water wash over them.
Once they're out, and redressed in clean clothes, they get into Steve's car. Wayne driving, Dustin in the front seat, so Steve can sit in the back with Eddie.
Holding him, keeping a piece of gauze against the worst of the bleeding.
They pull up in front of the emergency room, and Eddie takes a shuddering breath against Steve's body. Steve just hugs him closer, tighter.
"It'll be okay, I'll be right with you," Steve promises.
And he stays, even after there's been pushback. He watches as they numb Eddie's cheek, and then slide the needle through his skin, stitching him back together again.
But, part of Eddie is broken now, Steve's pretty sure. This was a new low, even for this goddamn town, and there will be hell to pay when Steve finds out who was responsible.
Eddie might want to let it go, but Steve won't. No fucking way in hell.
There'll be goddamn consequences, this time.

"who did this to you?"
day 15 of @febuwhump
hero and villain
540 words
warnings: implied abuse
part two here
~
Villain lands one last blow to Hero’s chest and she collapses to the ground, hands coming up to protect her face. She whimpers and tenses up, waiting for him to hit her again. After nearly ten seconds of waiting for a hit, she peers through the gap between her arms and shifts slightly.
“What are you waiting for?” She asks, hoping her voice wasn’t making her sound as weak as she felt.
Villain’s head tilts, “I’ve won. I’m not going to hurt you more than needed.”
Hero blinks in surprise and wraps her arms around her legs. She pulls her legs close to her chest and rests her chin on her knees.
Villain sits down in front of her and takes a deep breath. “Are you alright?”
“What?”
“You’re slow today. It’s barely been five minutes and I’ve beaten you. Normally you’re good for at least ten.” he says. “Don’t even blame school because I know you’re out for spring break.”
Slowly, he inches closer to her and cranes his neck to look at her. She pulls away uncomfortably and pulls her shirt down to cover her stomach.
“What are you looking at?” she asks accusingly.
Villain pulls her hand away from her shirt and reveals her bruised torso.
“What happened?” he asks, lifting the shirt up more.
She swats his hand away and pulls the shirt down. “None of your business.”
His face softens and he backs away from her, imitating her position. He rests his chin on his knees and laces his fingers together in front of his legs. Hero stays quiet, waiting for him to say something.
“Who did that to you?” he asks.
She scoffs and lifts her head. “It’s almost like I was just fighting someone.”
“Those are a few days old.” he retorts. “If you don’t want to tell me, that’s fine, but don’t act like I’m not right to be worried.”
“Why do you care?” she asks, pulling her legs closer against herself.
“Because you’re a kid trying to save the world. And if I can’t help you see that Superhero is using you…the least I can do is stop him from killing you.”
“Again with this thing with Superhero?” she snaps. “Last time I checked, he had the support of the city. And all you have is yourself.” she looks away from him and adds under her breath, “And I’m twenty.”
Villain bites the inside of his cheek and takes a deep breath. “You’re not the only person he’s taken in. And it never ends well. Ever wonder how he’s still alive after this long? It’s because he sends his soldiers out instead.”
Hero shakes her head, “No that’s not true. He and I have fought together-”
“When he knows he can win.” Villain interrupts.
Hero stands up and shakes her head, “I won’t turn on him. He’s given me too much.”
She walks away, then under her breath, barely loud enough for Villain to hear, “Training is supposed to push you. I wouldn’t gain anything from it if he went easy on me.”
Villain lets her leave, knowing that he won’t be able to change her mind if he pushes her too hard. Maybe one day, she’ll realize and maybe…she won’t.

Febuwhump Day 15 - Who Did This To You?
From The Queen of Lies:
He turned away from her, coughing quietly, and Breanna winced. His back was, as she expected, a mess of days-old cuts, dark scabs, yellowing bruises where the whip had struck but not sliced, and streaks of old blood where it had oozed from the healing wounds.
“They’re…” She swallowed the sick, sour taste in her mouth. “They’re healing, I think. I don’t see any fresh blood.” When he turned silently around, he didn’t move back from the bars, nor did he look away, and Breanna’s face burned again. “Stop staring like that.” She shifted the collar of her dress, embarrassed by how much she was sweating, and pushed a swath of damp, escaped locks away from her face.
“Stop staring like wh…”
His words trailed off.
And then he flung his arm through the bars and caught her wrist. “What is that?”
Breanna couldn’t breathe, because she’d been wrong, she’d been so wrong, he could reach through the bars, he could grab her, and he had, and what was he going to—
Some measure of lucidity broke through the storm of thoughts, and Breanna realized he was merely holding her wrist, not squeezing or pulling or twisting—his fingers grasping with no more force than a sheer curtain fluttering in a breeze. He lifted her arm so the torchlight illuminated a fresh bruise, the one that had been hidden until, without realizing, she’d pushed back her sleeves like a fool. “It’s nothing.”
His gaze left her arm and scanned her face, slowly trailing down until it landed on her throat, and she knew her hair and dress no longer hid what else was on her skin. “Who did that to you?”

Things I've seen tumblr memeing about James Somerton doing à la "How did no one see how bigoted he was!" as if those things haven't been a significant part of tumblr culture for over a decade :
Presenting untrue and bordering on conspiratorial versions of (queer or otherwise marginalised) history without any sources
Completely disregarding and disrespecting any expertise on socio-cultural topics/humanities and distrusting academics and historians (incl. acting as if no academics or historians could be queer or marginalised)
Downplaying the role misogyny played in the historical oppression of queer women and concluding that queer men must have been more oppressed than queer women
Bi women are, at best, not as queer as "real" queer ppl, and at worst, simply equivalent to straight women
Despite nominal trans inclusivity, transmasculine ppl are functionally women when convenient (combined with the above, bi transmascs are functionally straight women)
Despite nominal trans inclusivity (bis), shamelessly attacking, threatening and actively endangering any trans woman who questions them or smth they find important (often by unfairly presenting her as violent or as a threat)
Having absolutely fucking wild and reductive takes about ace ppl, the oppression they face and their place in the queer community
Stating that marriage equality is an assimilationist fight while completely ignoring its direct roots in the horrifying consequences of the AIDS crisis for partners of ppl who died of AIDS
Praising western media creators from the past for queer coding even under censure and in the same breath condemning current non western media creators for being homophobic bc their representation isn't explicit enough
Blaming China for all existing homophobic censoring in western media
Assuming all queer media would be better told by western creators and by western standards
Only out queer ppl get to tell queer stories
Heavily criticising almost all queer media created by women or ppl they see as such (see above points about trans ppl) or involving/starring a significant amount of women for any perceived or real amount of "problematicness", but fawning over and praising and negating criticism of queer media created by and starring mostly or even functionally exclusively men (even when it could be argued that, you know, not involving/seriously sidelining women is a pretty clear example of misogyny which should probably be considered "problematic")
And I'm probably forgetting stuff or there's stuff I have internalised myself and don't recognise as an issue
Like idk but I feel like the takeaway from Hbomberguy and Toddintheshadow's videos should maybe be "be aware of such patterns in your communities bc they definitely exist" and not "this guy is uniquely awful" and I feel like a lot of the discussion I've seen surrounding this has been severely failing at that. Most ppl who've spent any significant amount of time on tumblr prob either have internalised at least one of those thought patterns, have had to de-internalise them, or have had to be extremely vigilant to not internalise them (which is done by, you know, seeking out other sources, which also seemed like an important takeaway from the videos)
