...yeah I basically tend to either start in the middle of Things Happening or with like...a central idea, I guess? I like to keep first lines relatively short and to the point and ideally have some irony in them + some establishment of The Sitch. I tend not to stew over first lines as much as I do last lines but that's partially because usually they've been percolating in the back of my mind for a few hours/days while the fic concept (and words) slowly coalesce so. ????

Today's pirate shirt update: I ironed the neck gussets and mostly stitched on one of the shoulder strips (about 1 inch of sewing to go there, which I'll probably finish before bed).

This is the first step so far that I think would be better done by machine. The shoulder strip is long enough that it's a pain to sew both sides by hand, and it's a straight piece without any gathered fabric being attached to it, so it's not very fiddly.

Also, I wish I'd cut the shoulder strips about 1cm longer, maybe more if it was convenient. They're just barely long enough to use, and it would be easy to trim them if they were too long instead.

#no photos today because i am tired #if i was sewing the strips on by machine i would still baste them on by hand first but that's quick and easy #lining them up right takes some care because of how the neck gussets go #also the fabric is a bit puckered around the edge of the gusset #so that part sits similarly to a gather? but it's like 1cm and the whole rest of the seam is straight #i dont think it would change much about the shirt if that part were sewn by machine instead of whipstitched by hand #pirate shirt #magpiemending #the shoulder strip length thing might have been my fault lol i sewed the neck gussets with a smaller seam allowance than i was supposed to #which would mean the triangle is bigger #probably by just about 1cm although im not gonna do the math

every time i think about planned obsolescence and the slow disappearance of the right to repair i feel like breaking something but that would only contribute to the problem
