11 12 13 15 and 53 just for fun.
Ask game.

ohhhh spruce my beloved these are SUCH fun questions
11. Do you write scenes in order, or do you jump around?
I always write in order. Like, 99.8% of the time I will only write in order. that's because if I write the scenes I want to write the most ahead of time, I'm not gonna have any motivation to actually write the in between stuff. plus, it feels more natural to actually build up to those major scenes even from a behind the scenes standpoint. it makes the emotional payoff of writing those dramatic moments soooo much better
12. Do you outline your fics? If yes, how detailed are your outlines? How far do you stray from them?
Tricky question, the answer is both yes and kind of no? I do outline my fics yes, but depending on the story it's not very detailed. for my shorter stories like vanderlyle or under the brine, I know I can finish those quickly so I usually outline just bullet notes with the plot beats I know I need to hit, and I use that as a guideline while I write. as for my longer stuff like stars or clinic or forgetting, when I start writing those I know the overarching story and I know where I want to end it. however, when it comes to the stuff in the middle, I kind of plot it as I go along? I'll usually plot about 2-3 chapters ahead of time with the same vague bullet note plot beats i described, but that's mostly it. also, I do stray from the outline a lot! not necessarily by deviating from what I planned, but more just adding stuff in as I go. an example of this is in stars chapter 12, the fight with tommy in the beginning of the chapter literally wasn't in my outline for that chapter at all. it just kind of happened as the characters were talking, so I let the flow carry me which is what happens with a lot of conversations or arguments I write. it's always so satisfying when an argument pops up and it just flows on its own
13. Do you listen to music while you write? If yes, what have you been listening to recently?
Yes I do! Most of the time I listen to instrumental tracks while I write because stuff with lyrics can be distracting, although sometimes if I'm in a really focused mood I can listen to lyrical music. for honey and tangerines, I tend to listen to the actual playlist I link at the end of every chapter for that one while I write it, but if I need to focus I usually just pull up that really popular lofi beats spotify playlist that updates every day
now for stars, I rarely listen to lyrical music while I write that because I really need to focus on every detail and line of dialogue I write. so I have two main instrumental things I hop between when writing that one. if I'm writing stars, I'm always either listening to this ambient album (also listened to it a lot while writing creation myth, it's genuinely just gorgeous) or I listen to this if I need a change of pace. I don't do this as much anymore because it was really fucking with my spotify wrapped, but when I was writing forgetting if I wasn't listening to the playlist I would link at the end of chapters and I wanted instrumental stuff instead, I would listen to movie soundtracks a lot! it was usually either the soundtrack for the social network, or the soundtrack for gone girl. trent reznor and atticus ross were the composers for both those soundtracks, and I love their soundtrack work in films so so much. like, of course hans zimmer is super well known for his soundtrack work (and his work IS amazing), but trent reznor and atticus ross are literally so fucking good at what they do their soundtracks are so cool and have so many unique elements in them
15. What’s your favorite time to write?
ooo this one really depends on how busy i am + where my head is at. I'd say most of the time I like writing in early to late afternoon. even tho I wake up at a pretty good time (usually around 8:30 or 9), my brain doesn't start properly working till around 11 or 12 usually, so morning writing isn't super common for me. I used to like writing at night a lot (like from 9-11 or midnight usually), but lately I've been having way more trouble focusing at night for some reason, so I haven't been doing it as much
53. What is the most-used tag on your ao3?
oh this is a fun one let's see
Tumblr media
...yeah ok that tracks
ask game!

Preferred Music- OM! Brothers
Not that anyone asked me, but I was in the mood to write and I’ve gotten back into Obey Me! after a super-long hiatus.. so these are my thoughts on what the brothers listen to in terms of music. I’ve only finished S1, so forgive me if these don’t make sense in context of the later seasons T_T
Lucifer:
It’s established in canon that Lucifer loves listening to classical music and has an extensive record collection- the more cursed the better
I headcanon though that he also likes to listen to big band music, like the Glenn Miller Orchestra
I can imagine him putting one of his vintage Glenn Miller records on his grammy and asking his s/o to dance with him one night if he was feeling especially romantic. The song he’d initiate on would be Twilight Interlude, Moonlight Serenade, or Starlit Hour.
I also headcanon that Lucifer listens to crooners, like Nat King Cole or Frank Sinatra
If MC can play an instrument, especially if it’s the piano, Lucifer might lurk in the hallway for a while if he hears them playing music by composers like Beethoven, Mozart, or Chopin. He doesn’t know how or why, but he thinks their works sound best whenever MC plays them
I think Lucifer’s guilty pleasure is 50′s/60′s decade music, but only listens to them when certain conditions are met: he’s in an exceptionally good mood, his privacy is guaranteed for at least an hour, and it’s just him in his bedroom. He feels that artists like The Beach Boys, Elvis, and The Beatles don’t fit with his polished, high-class image, hence the secrecy around listening to them
You’ll know he trusts you when he allows you into his space while one of these artists’ records is on the gramophone
Doesn’t change MC’s ringtone in his phone, because one: he’s an old man and hardly uses the thing for anything besides communication anyway, and two: he wants to be the only brother who wasn’t prompted by Mammon’s ringtone change
Probably changes their ringtone after a few weeks, when his brothers have forgotten all about it
 Mammon:
The Black Crowes. Next-
It’s canon that Mammon likes R&B music
Mammon strikes me as a classic/90′s alternative rock kind of guy too, though. Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, U2, Deep Purple, The Black Crowes, Pearl Jam- that kind of vibe
If he’s feeling something a little more hard, he’d probably dip into Nirvana, Van Halen, AC/DC, or another band along those lines
“Money” by Pink Floyd is DEFINITELY his ringtone
If he’s trying to really focus to come up with a scheme to make Grimm, or is just in the mood for something really chill, he might pull up a lofi hip hop playlist/station to listen to in the background
If he and MC happen to be chilling in his room, though, he’d probably play whatever they’re into- not because he likes them and wants to learn more about them or anything, noooooo sir, definitely doesn’t want to know their favorite artists so he can maybe take them to a concert one day either
Probably starts listening to MC’s favorite bands and genres too as their relationship develops
I headcanon that as soon as he finds out whatever MC’s favorite song is, he sets it as their ringtone in his phone so he can distinguish them from modeling agencies and his brothers
Leviathan:
It’s canon that Levi LOVES anime music, which like- I 110% subscribe to
I think he’d also really like video game music as well. Especially if it’s a game he loves and their soundtracks are *chef’s kiss*
If the Devildom has an equivalent to K-pop, I could see him being into that too. BTS, EXO, SUPER JUNIOR, Girl’s Generation, and SEVENTEEN all give me Levi vibes
Because he used to play so many different instruments, I also headcanon that sometimes he gets in the mood to listen to some of the music he used to play
He might get started on a classical music kick for a couple hours, then be satisfied for a week or two until the craving comes up again
Like Mammon, he might try listening to MC’s favorite music to get to know them better- but if he’s too averse to it, he’ll just go back to listening to his usual music
As their relationship develops, he might change MC’s ringtone in his phone to the theme of an anime they’ve both watched together and loved, or to the theme of his favorite anime- not to be outdone by Mammon, of course
Satan:
It’s canon that Satan also enjoys classical music, especially symphonies
I headcanon though that Satan might resent this similarity to Lucifer, so listens to classical music in secret- or abstains from it until he cracks and binges for a few hours
I could also see Satan listening to music very loudly in his room to piss Lucifer off if he’s in a particularly vindictive mood, especially if it’s hard rock or metal
Three Days Grace, Shinedown, Breaking Benjamin, Disturbed, The Veer Union, Gojira, Beartooth, Steel Panther- and if he’s really mad at Lu, he’d pull out the stops and listen to some death metal
Lowkey kind of likes some of it, even though he started listening to it exclusively with the intent of making the eldest tear his hair out in frustration
For casual listening, though, I headcanon that he has soft indie playlists and stations that he’s favorited/subscribed to
I could also see him as the type to have a playlist built with all his favorite songs from his favorite Broadway plays (looking at you, Les Misérables and Cats)
When he catches wind that Mammon and Levi changed their ringtones for MC, he didn’t hop on the train to outdo them- he just thought it was a good idea. He changes it to a soft indie song that reminds him of MC in some way, whether the lyrics are explicitly about someone similar to them or the sound of the song gives them MC vibes
Asmodeus:
Asmo listens to healing music in canon
But I also imagine him listening to dance/EDM music, because it gets him pumped up for The Fall and reminds him of the good times he’s had there
I headcanon that Asmo listens to healing music when he’s pampering himself or doing spa sessions with MC, and dance/EDM when he’s getting primped up to go to the club
Asmo is DEFINITELY the type to put soft music on when he’s about to get it on with somebody to set the mood, but it’s not something he listens to on his own- he feels ambivalent about romantic music in general
With MC, though, if their relationship buds into something more than friendship- you can bet your ass that he custom makes the perfect playlist for spicy situations with them, and his opinion on romantic music changes into a more positive one
I also see him listening to Queens like Ariana Grande, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Beyoncé- really powerful women vocalists
Asmo might have an easy listening pop playlist/station subscribed on his app of choice, but probably has to be in the mood for it to put it on
Definitely changes MC’s ringtone to something cheeky at first, like “Sexual Healing”, but trades it for a romantic song that reminds him of them later as they get closer
Beelzebub:
The RAD newspaper reports that Beel likes the song in the “Hell’s Burger” commercial
But I headcanon that when the newspaper club asked him that question, he just didn’t know how to respond because he listens to so many different genres, so he blurted out the first thing on his mind (so of course it would be food-related)
Beel doesn’t strike me as the type to like one genre in particular to the exclusion of most others- he seems more like he’d have playlists of all different genres to switch between depending on the situation and his mood
He’d definitely have a workout playlist full of songs to hype him up, like “Eye of the Tiger”, “Welcome to the Jungle”,  “Seven Nation Army”, “Thunder”, etc.
Probably has upwards of thirty playlists/stations he’s subscribed to because of his broad tastes, but the ones I see him frequently playing are pop, indie, alternative, and punk rock
Because he shares a room with Belphie, he’s grown accustomed to listening to chill, soft piano music at night when the both of them are first falling asleep- so much so, he has a hard time falling asleep without it, so he always brings earphones with him when traveling so he can still listen to it
MC’s ringtone in his phone is the “Hell’s Burger” commercial song- the only other contact that shares the ringtone is Belphie. Hearing his favorite song helps him distinguish his favorite people from everyone else calling his phone, even if hearing the song makes him hungry and drool a little bit before he picks up
Belphegor:
Belphie likes chill piano music in canon
Makes sense to me, since he’s sleeping 99.999999% of the time
But I headcanon that he also likes punk rock, like Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, blink-182, Good Charlotte, All Time Low, Panic! At The Disco, Bring Me The Horizon, and more
He only listens to it if he has to stay awake for a long period of time- listening to piano music makes him sleepy, so that’s out of the question, even though he needs music to be able to focus
Belphie is another brother who will stick around if he hears MC playing the piano- he’s less covert about it than the eldest brother, though
He’ll straight up trudge into the music room, sit on the bench with them and lean his head against their shoulder as they play
Hope you weren’t planning on stopping anytime soon, MC
Belphie also seems like the type to have subscriptions to ASMR or soft storytelling podcasts/stations/playlists, for the times he finds he’s having a hard time falling asleep
Like Lucifer, is one of the last to hop on the ringtone train, and honestly didn’t really give a shit about it until he really thought about it. What if MC was in trouble and tried to call him while he was asleep? His normal ringtone wouldn’t wake him up in that scenario, which could end up being really bad
Changes it to something really loud and obnoxious at first, like “What Is Love” (the animal cover)
Eventually changes it to something more romantic as he and MC get closer in their relationship, like “Check Yes, Juliet”
~~
Thanks for reading! Hope you enjoyed reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them. <3
BTW, this is the ringtone I HC’d for Belphie lmfao: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mx5-aOGphII&t=53s
It’s my morning alarm and my family hates it, but I’m an extremely heavy sleeper sooooooo guess I’ll just keep being a menace to society

ATEEZ as students studying
HONGJOONG:
king of self-care! but studies for 15 minutes then take a 2 hour break and calls it self-care (omg he thinks he’s me or smth)
has power naps every single day at least 30 mins because he’s Stressed
always thinking of ways to drop out during the middle of lectures
that one kid that talks to nobody & sits at the back of the class with his hood on to hide his airpods
doesn’t do it anymore bc one time it disconnected and “there’s some whores in this house” blasted out loud & now he’s paranoid
shows up to group studies but lets the group carry him,,, but he puts out One Really good idea to get his name on the paper
only cares about topics he’s interested in, other than that he’s just astral projecting
“yo can you send me your answers so i can compare mine?” but he copies it and says “we got the same answers” (all men do is lie</3)
calculates his marks; “ok so i need at least a 80 on this...oh wait no, a 95...damn okay...”
the type to arrives late with ice coffee
SEONGHWA:
wakes up at 5 am to study instead of staying up
scented candles and lofi music for the ~studying mood~
a linguistic learner
learns best by teaching others so he’ll do group studies often to help other people

professor: ok - sent from iphone
you’ll never see him during exams week, he’s Gone
a loyal user of the outline method
his desk must be cleared at all times! a clean workspace makes it easier to focus
brings extra pencil just in case anyone needs them bc he’s the sweetest person ever (he’s fully aware that he’ll never get them back but it’s okay bc sharing is caring)
does his readings on time (you’ll never catch him slacking)
actually has his shit together for the most part 1/2
YUNHO:
writes “i love you” or “sorry” at the end of his tests (that he bombed)
the type to ask you to print “just one thing real quick” and it’s 15 page and at 2 am
uses emojis like :D & \(^o^)/ when sending emails to his professors
has a bad habit of copying word for word on the slide and he doesn’t actually understand/learn anything
goes to the library bc he thinks that’ll help him be in the ~studying vibe~
it doesn’t. ends up texting or watching youtube gameplay
has never heard of the colour-coding system in his entire life and ends up with a page filled with neon highlight
snacks breaks are the only thing keeping him Normal
leaves himself an encouraging note at the end of the reading page so when he’s finished he feels good !!
friends with all of the professors and uses all office hours
strongest points are his guessing skills in multiple-choice questions (process of elimination ftw!)
he tries his best, doesn’t care about marks that much because he knows it doesn’t determine him (and he’s right!)
YEOSANG:
probably runs a studyblr/gram
has the cutest note ever, his handwriting is so pretty!!
he thinks that buying an ipad pro & apple pencil will make him smarter
likes it bc he can doodle on it then erase them easily :”)
has to wear blue ray glasses because of how he looks at a screen so much
mildliners, muji 0.38 gel pen, 6 ring binder, minimal planner, washi tapes, you name it! he visits muji and daiso every other week
buys wayyy too many planners and notebooks which he never ends up using
only uses pastel mildliners because they’re easy on the eyes. cringes every time he sees yunho’s highlighters v_v
his flaw is that he spends 10 mins writing his header with brush tip pens
mutes the group project gc but gets his part done like the good classmate he is

exclusively uses college ruled paper like the sane person he is
SAN:
uses wide-ruled paper (unfortunately not everyone is perfect</3)
starts off very positive, motivated, and organized
then everything goes downhill by the second week
will definitely set byeol on top of his keyboard, take a picture, and send it to his professor as an ‘excuse’ as why he needs an extension (it works)
can’t sit still for any longer than 30 mins, his legs are always bouncing or fidgeting with pen
flashcard king! spends a lot of time on them but it’s worth it
a utensil chewer (always willing to share his pencil but when ppl saw the bite marks they’re like No Thanks >_>)
can’t study well with groups or himself bc he’ll be distracted,,, so he needs one person that can ground him bc when they’re in the zone, he will too be on his x game mode
sends his assignment at 11:58 pm hoping his professor will take the Hint (plz don’t be afraid to ask for help u_u)
prefers listening to ghibli studio soundtracks but then he either gets emotional or sleepy
sometimes forget to mute his mic and we just hear him groaning in frustration
“haha sorry i just stubbed my toe...”
then mutes his mic and goes back to his mental breakdown
MINGI:
the only person that studies every single day just to get his brain used to the information and running
probably listens to anime op or edm music for that Energy Boost
everyone either hates or love him because...
1. loves him bc he always comes clutched with study guides (and willing to share if he likes you enough)
2. he’s good at everything even if he’s not paying attention/doing it last minute
just naturally good at retaining information and applying them
asks Big Brain question that even the professors are shook
sometimes he gets super into the topic and wants to know Everything
“i’ve never failed an exam in my life” and he’s right! big brain mingi
fetal flaw is that he forgets easily (hence why the last minute) and has to write on his palm as a reminder
clicks his pens All the time so he switched to pens with caps just to keep others from jumping him
takes naps 10 mins before classes
actually has his shit together for the post part 2/2
“if no one got me, i know khan academy and quizlet got me. can i get an amen”
WOOYOUNG:
y’all know that one mf that doesn’t have a pencil?
yea he’s been using the same one someone lend to him before a test and never returned it
it’s been two months and it’s still working well and they’re never going to get it back
a minimalist,,,, but in a bad way</3 bc he carries his stolen pencil and paper that he spilled his energy drink over and that’s about it
just throw loose papers in his bag and forgets about their existence
doesn’t do binders or notebooks, just crumbled up paper
sometimes carries a textbook just to show everyone that he’s got his life together
really noisy for No reason, always wants to know other’s marks
a kinesthetic learner
hides his screen with he gets the kahoot questions wrong (you’ll never catch him slippin)
plays coolmathgames.com during class
doesn’t really know what to study/prioritize so he overwhelms himself with every single topic ever
thinks he’s god by pulling an all-nighter to look at the 60+ slides last minute
Swears he’ll change and do better next semester,,,</3
goes to the cafe, takes pictures of his notes & laptop, post it on his story, then leaves
JONGHO:
thrives off of red bull and ice americanos
gets notes and study guides from his upperclassmen because everyone loves jongho
an audio learner so he’ll probably work out or go on a jog while listening to lessons/audiobook
never pulls all-nighters bc it messes up his sleep schedule and says he’ll do it in the morning but he never does
doesn’t even own a highlighter, he’ll circle or underline stuff with a red or black pen
has never touched a textbook in his life
only the study guides and slides, his textbook is collecting dust rn
his notes are literally Only for him because his handwriting only makes sense to him
has questionable handwriting,,, it’s like decoding
multitasks a lot but it ends up taking a lot longer than he wanted to (bc it’s a myth)
very spontaneous; he’ll grind for 5 hours straight but sometimes he won’t even touch a pencil
works best when he talks about the work in groups and share information with each other, like having a convo about the topic
unmutes his mic Once after the lesson to say “bye”
does his work right after the lessons but then takes a short break & doesn’t even Look back for the rest of the night
-
a/n: tag yourself ! i’m a bit of hohong (i projected myself on all of them in some way lmaooo)

Writing tips and tricks! -Fanfiction edition!
I've always liked to write, between writing for schoolwork and writing in my free time, I've developed methods that help me write even if I'm not aware I'm using them, so hopefully, these can be helpful to anyone that decides to read this!
I mainly write fanfictions, so we will be focusing on how to write them.
What to write:
Deciding what to write can be difficult, especially if it isn't clear in your mind, so here is how I do it:
If you want to write, it means that you already have either a character or a situation in mind you want to write about.
So, if you want to write about, for example, a YouTuber/Streamer, you need to find what they will be doing in your fanfiction.
Try thinking about a situation you see them getting themselves into, such as editing a video or getting dragged along by their friends while streaming, or mundane action you do in your everyday life, like the struggle of getting out of bed or going on a car trip.
If you can't find anything elaborate, start with something easy.
On the contrary, if you have a situation you want to write about but you don't know what characters to choose, imagine who would fit the situation best or which personality would be more fun to see in the situation.
But sometimes, it's even worse, you want to write a fanfiction and your starting point is an exchange of actions between the characters
Ex:
A sits next to B and tells them they are going to be alright.
Or even just a phrase!
Ex:
A says to B ”Chin up King, your crown is falling”
In these cases, your best bet is to think about what would happen to you before saying such a thing or something like that happens.
If it's an action or phrase you never experienced, try focusing on the emotion; the phrase is sad, get a reason you would be sad and someone would totally cheer you up if they said that.
The situation is tense? try getting something to happen between the two who would create tension if you were in that situation.
Warning! Boundaries
If you are writing about a real person, such as streamers/youtubers/actors aka a living person, you might want to find their boundaries: rules the person themselves gave the community to follow when drawing/writing them that makes them uncomfortable or are ok with us doing.
Here on Tumblr, there is a quite accurate post of mcyt boundaries that you might want to check out.
If you decide to ”cross” the boundaries of the person you are writing about, be ready to get either nice comments telling you to take off the internet your story or warning you in general...
There are some people that can get pretty aggressive if you don't respect a boundary tho.
You are free to write whatever you want, but just so you know, you'll have to be ready to accept criticism and hate, you have been warned.
When to write:
If you have already tried to write,  you probably realized that sometimes, you just can't write. It's been days since the last time and you can't get yourself to do so!
Don't force yourself:
First of all, writing fanfictions should be fun, so don't stress over them.
Don't force yourself to write, maybe it's not the time, just so you know, if you really want to write, the ”inspiration” or the will of sitting down and typing will eventually arrive, don't worry.
Inspiration at a bad time?:
You are tired and you just want to sleep, yet, your brain starts spitting out brilliant ideas that you are scared to forget.
Don't start writing in the middle of the night, you can used these methods to remember them the morning after:
-Record yourself:
Open your camera and start a video, you won't be recording the video tho, you are interested in the audio.
Just record your ideas!
Ex:
”Ok so... A and B go to the supermarket together... Uh.... They laugh about and then B begs A to buy them sweets... But A doesn't want to... But in the end they give up and they buy it”
You are in a situation in which you can't talk? You can write them down wherever on your phone, the note doesn't have to be grammatically correct or make sense, they just have to help you remember what your idea was.
Ex:
A and B are playing video games when A gets mad at B because they killed them, maybe A shouts at them idk and then B starts crying and hangs up on the vc and A bc they are a dick they don't care but then...
Writing environment!
This is pretty personal, you'll have to try a bunch of these to figure out which one is your favourite.
Silence or chaos:
I personally prefer writing in my room without anyone around talking, but if you concentrate better when noises are around, it's completely up to you.
Music or silence:
If you want to write while listening to something, I recommend choosing songs that either have little or no lyrics, an example is lofi songs, they are pretty chill and usually don't have lyrics.
Games soundtracks work just as well if they don't distract you.
For me, songs with lyrics in languages I don't understand work too.
If you are a stan of Wilbur Soot, his songs even if in English work pretty well, his singing is close to mumbling and his tone is quite low, so try it out if you like his stuff!
I recommend having their volume pretty low so that they won't bother you, also for some reason, I found out that having them on my laptop speaker instead of my headphones allows me to concentrate more, maybe it's just me, but try it out if the other options don't work.
Stay hydrated f**kers!
If you write at your desk, I highly recommend having a water bottle/glass next to your laptop/pc.
If possible, place it in your field of view when looking at the monitor, this will make it so that if you are stuck on what to write, you'll look around and see the water, so you'll take a sip of it.
Also take breaks, just go walk around the house or go to the bathroom, the small distraction should help you focus more, but looking at your notifications or social media will distract you out of your creative mood, you have been warned!
What was that word again??
You are peacefully writing when you want to write a word, but you just can’t remember it! it’s on the tip of your tongue but you just… can't.
As someone who writes in english but english is not my main language, this is often a problem, but don’t worry, everyone has this problem.
These three sites that I found help me TONS and they are free and easy to use! So if you are trying to improve your vocabulary or you just forgot that specific word, these will definitely help you!

On Background Music and Studying:
Hey everyone, I touched on this subject when reblogging a post about creating a good study environment:
There’s a lot of controversy when it comes to having music on when studying, and as a music nerd and someone with a weirdly wired brain, (I suspect that I have ADHD. I at least have symptoms of it but as of now I’m not sure whether I’m truly ADHD or if the symptoms stem from my anxiety. I also have auditory sensory processing issues- I hear everything, and can’t really filter audio input fast enough) I was hoping to shed some clarity on the subject.
Some people will swear by studying with music- but instrumental only. Others claim that any music at all will decrease your focus. I’ve found that, from my experience, the music that helps most with studying simply depends on the circumstance.
For example, when Im reading a textbook or trying to do a written assignment, I can’t have anything with lyrics. I also can’t have anything too “technical”, such as fast classical piano like Mozart or Bach, or even orchestral music with wildly changing dynamics. These particular elements pull my brain away from the book the same way an ongoing conversation in the room would. However, when I’m doing calculation based study, like math or engineering problems, I actually need the extra stimulation faster and louder music gives my brain. I’ve done Vector Calculus to Fall Out Boy many a night.
Here’s my advice: music you study to should be able to boost your focus without breaking it. For me, that either entails
Style:
A) music that is ambient in nature or
B) music that is familiar enough that my brain doesn’t latch onto it.
My study playlists generally consist of both: a mixture of ambient background music, generally without lyrics, but with enough “texture” to “push” my brain foreword mixed with songs with lyrics I’m familiar with to give my mind a break from the material.
Genre:
Everybody has different musical tastes, and what genre you build your study playlists from depends solely on what you like. Here are some suggestions, in no particular order
1) Classical and Orchestral: I know. The Cliché advice. But for many, it works. If you need something technical and busy for your brain to latch onto, try this.
2) 8-Bit: very technical, especially good if you like the technicality of classical music but need to change it up. 8-bit music inspires a feeling of “gotta go fast” and boosts motivation when working. 8-bit pulls a lot of themes from classical music, thus classical music lends itself well to 8-bit renditions. Like classical, however, this genre may become distracting to some.
2) Movie, TV, and modern video game scores: if you like orchestral music, but need something more suited for being background music, Movie and TV scores are literally made for that. I personally have the Stranger Things soundtrack mixed into my ambient electronic playlist, and will listen to a lot of the instrumental pieces from Tim Burton movies (Not the musical numbers, but the background music). These scores often have repeating themes that make your brain let go of focusing on the music itself, but with enough variation on those themes to keep it interesting.
3) LoFi Hip Hop: The fault with classical music and movie scores often comes in the length of the pieces. For example, Beethoven was an incredible composer, but he wrote songs that were 20 minutes long. In some cases, song length can break focus by causing one to zone out from listening to the same song for too long. Here’s where this suggestion comes in. LoFi hip hop is very trendy study music right now, but for good reason. It’s comprised of short tracks with similar musical components, including a strong rhythm, repeating musical themes, and varying textures built over those themes. What makes LoFi nice is that there is environmental noise, such as tape fuzz, birds chirping, and rain tracks intentionally incorporated into the music itself. If you have auditory processing issues or tinnitus, this aspect of LoFi can really a) take your mind off distractions as they blend into the musical background, and b) mask the ringing and buzz of tinnitus with the more pleasing static of the tracks themselves.
4) Shoegaze: Love Rock and Roll but can’t study to Metallica? This is the genre for you. Shoegaze is a guitar-based genre named for its heavy use of pedals. So many pedals that the players “are constantly gazing at their shoes”. It has a lot of elements of post punk and metal, but with the loose, relaxed feeling of LoFi. There is a lot of reverb and distortion. There are occasionally lyrics, but they are under heavy effect as well. The instrumentals are center stage in this music, and like with LoFi, the heavy effects create a pleasing background buzz that can mask less pleasing sounds. This genre has an inherently warm tone.
5) A “Gettin’ Shit Done” album: yes. If you need faster paced music with lyrics to study to, that is no problem at all. Use one of your favorite albums and make it a designated “Getting Shit Done” album. I reccomend an album over a playlist because albums have a) a set style and theme, and b) a set run time. Now, this has to be an album you can listen to over and over without getting tired of it. Music you truly love. What you’re going to do is train yourself Pavlov Style to react to this album playing with a sense of motivation. Put your album on in the background while you do chores or projects. Repeat this process until you associate the album with motivation and finishing work. Then use it to give you motivation while you study. This method helps me overcome executive dysfunction. If I need to do calculation-based study, and don’t have the motivation to do it, I put on Folie A Deux by Fall Out Boy. I’ve memorized every word and musical cue of the album, so it doesn’t distract me. It’s fast paced enough that I can rock out while I do my math homework and breeze through it without stressing out about it.
Bonus advice: if you’re a vinyl junkie like me, use the format to your advantage and combine it with the Pomodoro technique. Vinyl records can be used as a study timer, as Each side is roughly 30 min long. When a side comes to an end, take a short brain break. Get up, Stretch, address any physical needs you have (I.e. get a snack or drink or go to the bathroom) and decide whether you have enough juice to keep going. If that answer is yes, flip the record and study for another side. If you use purely digital media, phone timers will often have an option to stop playing music when the timer ends instead of the normal timer sound. Put on one of your study playlists, and set the timer to 25 minutes. When that time is up, your music will stop, and you need to take a break and assess your physical state before restarting it.
This is just my two cents! Feel free to try or ignore this advice! Happy Studies!!
