[My Shadow: Fullbody Darkness Overlay]
This is really specific. Needed it for a photoset and decided it was worth being shared, so here you go! We loved @valhallansim's overlay, but Xan wanted something that would work with eyelashes, and show the eyes and teeth. So, we reverse-engineered our own overlay and ended up with this. Want to go Dark Link, and have a doppelganger with its own personal darkness? Want a character in silhouette, with eyes showing, like in a comic? Sims just too bright in a night scene? Then this is cc for you! Drop a shadow over any Sim that needs it, or reduce them to a silhouette. The sky is the limit!
Tumblr media
Screenshots are unedited; the overlay darkens everything, and results will vary based on the skin, the darkness of clothes worn, etc. It won't effect rings or glasses (so it would work with eyelashes), and some EA bracelets (for some reason), but it's fun to play with. Found under Toenails, includes custom thumbnail, the works! Download below!

Lucy chen x reader.
Lucy and reader are sent undercover as a couple. This brings up hidden feelings from both women, and Lucy shows up to r's apartment a couple of nights later, and confessions are made. (Reader is Angela's partner/best friend. R is a detective.)
lucy is actually my girlfriend and current obsession right now
this is really sucky, i apologize.
old feelings
It’s late, your head hurts, and you’re hungry, but you can’t seem to bring yourself to ignoring Angela’s phone call.
She normally never calls at night unless it’s super important. Whether it’s about work or her person life with the kids and/or Wesley.
“This better be real important Ang,” You hiss in pain when your head starts pounding even more than it already was. “And there better be a reward of Ibuprofen at the end of it.”
Angela chuckles tensely, “I’ll have Ibuprofen waiting here for you when you get to the station.”
You sigh, but stand nonetheless. You had a feeling something had happened after you left. But it may have also had to do with you just abruptly leaving without saying goodbye to Angela.
“There better be,” You scrunch up your face. “I ran out last night or I would have already taken some.”
“Alright, well, get here. There’s an undercover operation in the works, and they need you,” You can hear the nervousness in Angela’s voice.
“What’s wrong?” You swallow, the nervousness from Angela making its way to you.
“I’ll tell you when you get here,” Angela is shaking her head.
“Okay,” You hang up the phone and grab your keys, trying your best to ignore the pulsing in your head as you slam the apartment door and make your way out to your car.
You make sure to turn the volume of the radio the whole way down once you start the engine.
You breathe out a gust of air, making your way back to the station as fast as possible.
Angela held her promise, as she is standing in the lobby of the station as soon as you get there with a bottle of medication and a bottle of water.
“Talk to me,” You throw the pills in your mouth, drinking almost the whole bottle of water along with it.
“It shouldn’t be me,” You turn to see the pain in Angela’s eyes and you realize it has something to do with Angela’s personal life. Meaning her husband or kids.
“Oh Ang,” You pull her into her for a quick hug before the two of you speed to the conference room.
You see Wade, Nyla, Tim and Lucy all waiting there. Similar expressions in their faces.
“Someone better start talking,” You glance at each other them. Your gaze lingering on Lucy’s for longer than necessary.
“It’s Wesley,” Nyla breaks the silence, sparing a small look in Angela’s direction.
Your heart drops to the floor, “I had a feeling.”
“So let’s stop sitting around sulking about it and come up with a plan.”
“Officer Bradford,” Grey warns. “We have a plan—“
“We have an outline,” He corrects.
“Officer Bradford,” You shake your head, making your way to the empty seat beside Lucy. “Like you said, let’s stop wasting time. Share the outline with me.”
“As far as we know, Wesley Evers has been taken by Elijah Stone and his men.”
You feel Lucy stiffen beside you, and you assume it has to do with Elijah.
You had your own history with Elijah. Not like he had tried to come after you before, because he knows better than to mess with a cop straight on, but the station had been following Elijah for a long while now. And if you could catch him, you would do whatever it takes.
“..so there will be an undercover operation,” Nyla is talking now. You must’ve tuned Grey out while you were thinking. “For obvious reasons, we can’t have Angela go under. And we know I can’t, because I can’t risk my shared custody with my daughter again.”
“Is— is that why I’m here?” Lucy asks excitedly, sitting up in her seat.
“Precisely,” Grey tries to hold back a small smile.
“That’s also why I’m here,” You conclude.
“You catch on quick,” Tim remarks sarcastically.
You clench your jaw, and down the rest of your water.
“We think it would be better if we had people on the inside. People Wesley recognizes,” Nyla nods, looking at Wade so he could finish.
“Wesley will recognize you, and neither of you have went head on with Elijah or his men.. so you are our two viable options,” Grey nods, holding his hands in front of his waist.
“Separately? Or..” Lucy asks, and you look at her. She’s so adorable. So naive.
“Together, Chen,” Tim narrows his eyes. “Like as a couple.”
“Okay, seriously what’s up your ass?” You hollow your cheeks, having about enough of this man’s attitude.
“Detective—“
“No, you have no right to be disrespectful to anyone, let alone Officer Chen, who has been nothing but respectful since I’ve gotten here. So apologize,” You raise your brows when Tim just stands there. “Now.”
“I’m sorry, Chen,” Tim says, internally rolling his eyes.
“You didn’t have to—“
“I know,” You say, just barely missing the blush on her face.
Within the next forty-eight hours, the two of you are off on a plane, one of Aaron’s planes, to be specific.
They’d set up a small townhouse near where they suspected Wesley was being held.
You could feel the anxiety radiating off Lucy, but she never once said anything. You admired her strength through this all.
You and Lucy had a past, if that’s what you’d call it.
You trained her for a while there when Tim was out after being shot, and you’d shared moments, to say the least.
If you asked Angela, she probably would’ve told you that the two of you almost made out at one point, but you didn’t think that. Something about get together at the bar one night, and some longing stares.. you didn’t really know.
But you probably would have asked her out, had you not been in her line of work for the longest time.
You followed most of the rules - including the very strict and unnecessary dating policy.
Then by the time you made it to be up for the detectives exam, the both of you had forgotten about your longing glances and schoolgirl crushes.
Until now.
Lucy is sitting on the edge of the bed now, tapping her fingertips on her lower thighs as a nervous tic. She bites her lip, probably hard enough to draw blood. That was something you remember about her.
“Are you okay, Lucy?” You tilt your head, moving to sit beside her on the bed.
“Yeah,” She shrugs. “This is kind of my first real operation, and I know if I mess up, Angela will have my head.”
“I won’t let her,” You say after a beat of silence.
“Why would you care?” Lucy’s brows furrow, not a hint of anger in her voice. Only curiosity.
“Do you mind if I shower first? I still kind of have a headache..” You stand, not looking her in the eye any longer.
“Oh, I brought some medicine, if you’d want,” Lucy smiles politely.
“I’ll see how I feel after,” You clear your throat and grab whatever clothes are on top for after. “But, thank you.”
You remember that look in Lucy’s eye. You’ve seen it before. All that time ago when you were training her. You had deja vu.
Lucy suggested the two of you went out for something to eat, make yourself seen.
She was smart for that, because not only had you picked a place Elijah’s presence was well known in, but you’d also laid eyes on Wesley for the first time in a few days.
It was a local bar, but it was more on the fancier side, if that makes sense. It served food other than anything that is made in the same grease, so in your opinion, that was fancy all on its own. But Lucy proceeded to tell you all about it.
Which was why you got deja vu in the first place.
She was spinning facts at you, and you were listening intently, laughing here and there to try and gain Wesley’s attention.
You’d gotten it, and he knew you were there. You and him shared a nod.
The glint in her eye is still there when she stops talking after she realizes you’re just watching her.
Out of the corner of your eye you see Elijah glance towards the two of you.
You give her a wide smile, grabbing her hand gently.
You see the light tint of blush on her cheeks, and you try to narrow your eyes so she understands, but she’s more focused on your touch.
You pull her hand to yours lips to cover your mouth, “He’s watching.”
She snaps out of in, and falls into character. She’s leaning on the table, her chin resting on her knuckles of her free hand.
“I love you, you know?” Lucy gives a love struck smile.
“You’ve never said that aloud efore,” A smile takes over your features.
“I know..” She looks down. “But I’ve been thinking it for a while. Ever since.. you know.”
“No, I don’t,” You have the feeling she’s going to try to share her feelings, for real. So you let her.
“When my mother came over the last time. When she blamed me for being with a woman.”
“Yes,” You say. You remember hearing about it through the grapevine, but it wasn’t you in this scenario, it was someone else. That made you feel an almost.. jealous feeling. “I wanted to tell you that night too, but.. you were having so many feelings.”
“And I appreciate you for that,” Lucy leans forward slightly.
You don’t even care if Elijah is watching anymore, because when Lucy leans forward a fraction of an inch, all you’re focused on are her soft and inviting lips.
You liked playing pretend with Lucy. It felt amazing, like maybe you should have asked her out when you wanted to back then.
But it was time to go home now, after a successful rescue mission for Wesley. And you were sort of upset about it.
You were happy to be back home in your own bed after almost two months, but you were kind of missing Lucy and yours’ dinner dates right now.
You’re bingeing an episode of Top Chef when you hear a knock on your door.
Swinging the door open, you see Lucy. She has an oversized sweater on, and she’s playing with the sleeve.
“Lucy?” You frown. “What are you doing here?”
“I need to tell you something,” She comes in the door without even being invited in.
“Could it wait—“
“No,” Lucy cuts you off. “It can’t. Or I’ll talk myself out of telling you. Again. I need to do it now or I may never do it at all.”
You were intrigued now, so you grab Lucy by the sleeve and pull her towards you, leading the both of you to your couch.
“What’s wrong Lucy?” Your brows are furrowed.
“Well..” You watch as Lucy tries to decide how to say when she needs to get out. “It’s just.. mm.”
“Spit it out, Luce,” You chuckle lightly, shaking your head.
“Ihavefeelingsforyou,” She says it so fast you almost don’t even hear what she said.
A look flashes across her face at your reaction, and from your point of view, it looks like regret.
“I’m sorry,” Lucy swallows nervously. “I’ll.. um, I’m just— I’ll go.”
“No,” You say instantly, grabbing her arm to pull her back onto the couch. “I’m just surprised because, well.. I know when I was training you - when Tim was out - that I also shared feelings for you. Angela even saw something, which should tell you something all in itself. But anyway, these past weeks, the feelings had returned and.. I wouldn’t be opposed to a real date.”
Lucy lets out a long and relieved sigh, “Oh, thank god. Because I almost had a heart attack. And, also, I used to have feelings for you too.. why didn’t you just ask me out.”
You chuckle and shake your head, “I was in your line of duty. And I wasn’t ready to move from patrol yet.”
A look flashes in Lucy’s eyes as she turns her head to look at the television.
“Oo! Top Chef?” Lucy’s eyes light up. “We’re definitely going on a date.”
Lucy moves a little closer to you, and leans her head on your shoulder.
You both fall asleep like that.

Happy Saturday :) Counted the days today see how far off we are. 73 days till s6. Still awhile away but glad to have something to look forward to. Not a ton of moments in this one but what we do get is good. Always is with them having crumbs or massive moments tis a delight. Do get to see Tim in sexy leader mode. Always gets my engine revving ha
4x15 Hit List
Tumblr media
We start off with the clown saying 'Hi' to Lucy. She asks if he got her emails? He babbles on about not reading them yet. Cause they pertain to coddling felons. (asshat...)He then jumps the gun and calls her his GF. Lucy is not about it. I love her calling him out on it. The clown tries to defend his answer but Lucy cuts it off. Not allowing the convo to go any further. It’s almost like he’s not worth it Lucy…. Or just a relationship of convenience....Instead of digging deeper into that she presses on about the judicial system.
How he could make a difference with the position he’s in. Chris asks why she didn’t go to law school then? Her answer is classic. Because her parents wanted her to LOL The clown starts telling her she should go to law school. Leave being a cop and the violence behind. It’s funny or more annoying really. Both Chris and Ashley wanting them to leave being a cop behind. Something that so dear and important to them. An intricate piece of who they are. Oh the reasons these people are wrong for them is plentiful.
They truly pick the polar opposites for themselves this season. Before the clown leaves he asks her if she really wasn’t ok with him calling her his GF? Lucy deflects once again. Saying it’s fine if she can call him her ‘Work in progress. ’ Easy love, your commitment issues are showing…Amazing how in s5 with Tim she doesn’t hesitate…. *sigh* The clown is an annoying speed bump on our journey to that moment.
Tumblr media
We first catch our couple rolling in their shop. Lucy looking out the window. Pensive look written on her face. Tim notes this silence and says she’s been quiet. So funny this man who would get so irritated by her talking and personal stuff notes this. We know that wall is demolished so when he doesn’t have that he misses it. i.e. this moment.
We all know he secretly loves their shop talks at this point. She came barreling into his life like a chatty sunshine filled wrecking ball. Knocking his high wall down to rubble. With it gone he’s used to it now and craves it honestly. Especially when it’s absent. He’s the one to break the silence in this moment not Lucy. It’s the little things I love so much. Look at our Tim.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once the silence has been broken Lucy asks her question. Asking Tim if he thinks she’d be a good lawyer? Doesn’t waste a second before telling her No LMAO Her face in the second gif haha She’s so offended. Tim sees this and follows up with saying it's a compliment. Lucy tries to defend it by saying Wesley’s a lawyer. ‘We’ like Wesley. Heh who is this 'We' eh Lucy? Talking like an old married couple. What else is new? Haha I love it Tim fires right back with the same ‘We’ below. This is making me giddy. I see you guys and I’m happy about it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tim makes the point they only accept Wesley cause they fear Lopez. I mean where’s the lie? LOL If there is one other woman (other than Lucy) who can put the fear of God into Tim it’s Angela Lopez haha Also his disdain for lawyers explains his extra dislike of Chris the clown. Already doesn’t like the guy. Him being a lawyer isn’t scoring him any extra points with Tim.
Nevertheless she is amused by her husband antics about this. Written all over her face. Damn they cute. Lucy continues on about making change. That a progressive DA can change a lot more than they can. Tim stops her. Says they’re not there to make change. Their job is to catch criminals. If she wants to become a crusader for change tells her to become a billionaire. Then she can eradicate poverty.
Tumblr media
Before their convo can go any further they see a car pull up speeding. It cuts them off and opens fire on the vehicle next to it. They pull up to the car and the poor driver is already dead. There was nothing they could've done for her. She’s so young it’s sad to see. Lopez pulls up to their scene after its in progress. Asks what happened? All they have right now is a drive by for info. She tells them that the key into why she was shot at will be in ID'ing her.
Tumblr media
Tim takes over for Grey so he can go testify in his case. It’s his first stint as Watch Commander. Already off the a rocky and hectic start. Nolan also had a victim this morning. Man blatantly poisoned in the lobby. He died waiting for help. They connect the two through the fact they were both witnesses to a massive case. Tim lets them know it’s the same case Grey is about to testify for… I do love seeing him in that chair. Everyone coming to him because he's acting commander. He wears it well.
Tumblr media
Tim comes to see Grey at the hospital. He just barely survived his attack. The scene in the garage is intense. It's a throw back to when Nolan killed his suspect back in S1. We can see the worry on Tim's face before he walks over to Wade. He does his best to put his worry away before coming up. The worry is still evident though. Especially through out their interaction. This man has been a rock and a mentor for Tim. To see Grey shaken up like this is hitting him hard.
I love Tim coming up calm and patting his leg. Trying to reassure him. He then does what he does best and takes control of the situation. Lets him know everything is squared away. That all he needs to focus on now is getting better. Wade asks who she was? He tells her a hitter for Matteo Rubio. The man he was set to testify against. They think that she was also the shooter for the drive by.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tim goes into sexy sergeant mode. Reports back to his crew who are waiting for news. They discuss what happened and if the threat is over. Nolan doesn’t think so since the person who killed his victim was a man. Tim sends Lucy to the DA with Angela to get the witness list. See if they can prevent anymore deaths. He then directs everyone else in that take charge tone of his. Yum. Everyone turning to him for guidance and respecting everything he's saying. I love it sfm.
He wants round the clock security for Grey. Then advices Nolan on how to be there for Wade. Going from strong leader to teacher in the blink of an eye. Getting me all hot and bothered Sergeant Bradford. *fan-self* Tim says he’s going to try and ID the deceased shooter. That way he can find out who she was partnered with and catch this other threat.
Tumblr media
The trip to the DA is fruitless. Del Monte won’t share the confidential witness list. Says unless they have credible evidence he isn’t sharing anything. That they handle witness protection for a reason. Angela is fiery af with Del Monte. Saying they’re doing a bang up job LOL I love her so much. This is why Tim fears her haha
Chris tries to catch them before they leave. Angela allows a minute for them to chat in private. He hands her the list. Lucy immediately tries to hand it back. He follows it up telling Lucy that she can’t say where she got it from. He’ll be fired if she does. Maybe then don’t do that and put her in this position clown…
Acting like he's doing her this big favor but also letting her know how it could damage him. Trying to be the big hero but it comes off as anything but that IMO. Like look at me and what I'm going to possibly sacrifice. You'll owe me if this works out. Putz. Lucy’s moral compass winning out though. Tim would be so proud. Telling him they can’t become criminals to catch one. That they’ll find another way. My girl. I love it. Angela interrupts says they ID’d Grey’s shooter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We return to our ship on a stakeout. They found the place she has been staying at. Waiting to gain entrance to their shooters home. Tim coming up asking if there has been any movement? Lucy reports no. What I love here is the lack of space. This whole season it's not a concept they understand. I love it sfm. He closes the gap and she doesn’t even notice. It’s just their natural rhythm at this point. Magnetically drawn to one another. Could he be any closer to her?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once they’re inside they notice her associate isn’t there. They don’t have a name attached to him yet. All they had was this house and it’s empty. Lucy asks Tim if he smells smoke? He says yes. Being the smart cookie she is saying it’s a little hot outside for a fire….The theme for lack of person space continue as they examine the fireplace. Looks like they just missed him. He bailed and burned their paper trail before he took off.
As they check the remains of the burnt paperwork. Tim joins her and leans close as they inspect what’s left. No need for it but I’m happy for it haha He physically can’t help it. Tim saying there isn’t much to work with. Lucy being the bad ass she is finds something. A name Kellen Myers. Just what they needed. A huge crack in the case courtesy of our girl.
Tumblr media
We find out that name was of a paralegal who sold the list to their shooter. Angela breaks down this dude quickly. It's amazing to watch her in action. He easily collapses under the pressure. Says he didn’t know anyone would get killed. Tells her he gave the name of the witnesses and the DA. Idk how this dude thought they would just play nice with them all. Idiot. Probably why they picked him.
Tim and Lucy race to the DA office. Phone lines are down and they know their next target is them. Unfortunately they save his clown ass and Del Monte (would’ve saved us a lot of trouble had this guy succeeded haha) Guess them being together did get us pouty, pining Tim in S5 so it’s not a total loss her dating him lol
Tumblr media
Lucy checks in on the clown after everything is settled. She then asks him why he really wanted to give her the list? To me Chris was one big manipulative red flag. (Also clueless as hell at the same time. Enigma of ugh.)He never did anything because it was the right thing to do. It was because he was trying to impress her. Pleading the 5th and all that for the list. Just like Tyler's deal in 4x11. He did it because it was to impress Lucy. To get in her good graces.
So once again with this moment he did it for the sake of impressing her. Not because it was the right thing to do. Nothing like Tim. I’ve said this before they both went for people who were the polar opposite of who they really wanted in s4. I dislike Chris so much and he lasts the longest bleh. I don't like either Ashley or Chris but I dislike Chris more. Love the actor to bits he's a sweetheart. Chris though? blah. Pretty low content ep for them but next one will more than make up for it.
~~~
Side notes-non Chenford
The SL with Grey and Nolan is really good. I may give Nolan a hard time cause well he is a putz most times ha but I do enjoy how he and Grey have grown professionally and personally.
Aaron’s plain clothes day is ROUGH to say the least with running into Patrick’s dad…
Thank you so very much to those who continue to be on this review journey with me. By liking, commenting and reblogging these ❤️ you’re the all the best. See you in 4x16 :)
sometimes I think about the fun of it mixing trek characters. like a tng where ezri shows up and deanna is her mentor. but then I can make it more wild of like...
ds9 au where seven ends up there and sisko has to deal with a borg on his station while also teaching seven baseball and bashir will not stop asking questions about the borg
voy au where jake and nog snuck on to the ship and janeway takes time to help jake with his stories and nog follows b’elanna around to learn engineering from her and the two compete with tom and harry on pranks
tng au where kes is somehow there and beverly is her mentor for medical stuff and she gets a pseudo-sibling thing with wesley and also spends her free time with keiko learning about alpha quadrant plants
like idk there’s potential for fun stories there! where cross trek characters get to meet more and whatnot.
Thoughts on tng season 6 ep 6: the game.. I enjoyed the cast turning evil but I couldn’t stop thinking how it wasn’t explained how Geordi got hypnotized. It’s established that the device 1. Snaps around your head, 2. Shoots something directly into your eyes, and 3. Is played using vision, all things that Geordi couldn’t do?? He’s literally completely blind without the visor and I don’t think they establish it at all.
Long ass explanation ahead of how I’d rewrite the episode to fix that and also be gayer.
So anyway if I wrote the episode, data would get shut off by crusher and left there in medbay. Later, geordi would ask about data, and it would be revealed that he ‘had a system failure but is alive’. They couldn’t hide data, so they’d have to let geordi see him and ask questions. He’d then ask why they didn’t immediately get him since he’s the best person on the ship to fix data.
They would have some soft excuse, then take the first chance they had to incapacitate him. Maybe they’d do it in the brig and claim he commuted some crime, or maybe they’d also lock him in a quarantine section in sickbay, claiming he has a dangerous infection. Either way, he’d be blind and stuck in a strange place until Wesley and Robin find data, realize he’s been attacked, and go look for Geordi to help them (since they know they’re the only two officers that couldn’t be affected).
They’d break him out in a tense spy-scene and get him to sickbay where he’d figure out how to get datas mobility back without his visor and just with the help of the kids (probably one would help while the other kept watch.) Geordi would finish just when footsteps were incoming, and tell the kids to run. Data wouldn’t get up and Geordi would cling then yell for him to wake while the hypnotized crewmembers locked him up again.
The rest of the episode would play out with robin being taken then Wesley running then being captured, just without Geordi. Data would show up with the light trick, the evil lady would talk then disappear, but before we get a goodbye shot with Wesley and robin, Wesley and a few others would meet geordi and data in engineering and ask how they were, crewmates clearly embarrassed about their actions. The pair would laugh it off and say something about how they figured out the solution. Data would ask a silly question, and geordi would comment how he now knows he can fix data without the bots help and ‘blindfolded’.
Character Spotlight: Wesley Crusher
By Ames
Tumblr media
Grab your favorite hideous sweater! It’s time to talk about Wesley Crusher. He’s one of the most polarizing characters on TNG, with a lot of hate directed his way, but he also has a number of great Trek moments which we on A Star to Steer Her By are going to sort through today!
We can probably blame Gene Roddenberry for making this character so insufferable, especially in the first season when he seemed to have the easy solution for the engineering problem of any given episode. Gene designed him to characterize a person’s infinite potential and then slapdashedly shoehorned him into every place he could, and you’ll notice that right after the big writers room turnover, the child prodigy started feeling more like a character and less like a cheat code. Scroll on for the list below and listen to our chatter on this week’s podcast episode (warp over to timestamp 57:36) for all the dirt. Just unplug your nanite experiment first.
Best moments
Tumblr media
Don’t shut up, Wesley While I’ll give Wesley the deserved scrutiny in a moment for the absurd number of times in season one of TNG that he saved the day, we do have to give him some credit for figuring out that Lore was impersonating Data in “Datalore.” Even while pretty much everyone on the crew was telling him to shut up, Wes had it all figured out and topped it off by beaming Lore into space.
Tumblr media
Double dumbass on you! Wesley actually does get to shine during “Coming of Age,” an episode that really uses his youth to its advantage by having him take the Starfleet Academy entrance exam. And he gets pretty far! He even figures out that Rondon is a Zaldan, so Wesley realizes that apologizing for getting run into himself is the wrong reaction for that culture and comes away looking like a badass.
Tumblr media
Teamwork makes the dream work Speaking of “Coming of Age,” Wesley is also this close to solving the dynamics relationships test first when he helps Mordock figure it out too. Wesley’s natural affinity for helping his crewmates is more important to him than getting the top score, which TAC Officer Chang takes into consideration in the final results. I’m not sure it helped much, but it’s a good character moment.
Tumblr media
You never forget your first “I'm never going to feel this way about anyone else,” Wesley says to Guinan after watching his first crush leave in “The Dauphin.” Strangely, it’s a very mature little conversation considering Wesley was ready to write Salia off as some kind of alien monster earlier in the episode. But he learns to accept her differences, score some relationship experience points, and get his first smooch.
Tumblr media
The minute you walk through that door they’re your team Slowly, the show starts putting Wesley in more age-appropriate situations in which he isn’t just saving the day, so it’s fitting for him to be overwhelmed when leading his first committee in “Pen Pals.” His team member Davies effectively takes over because Wes initially lacks confidence, but he soon takes charge and they work together to save Drema IV. Go team!
Tumblr media
You told me to improvise During the war games in “Peak Performance,” Wesley thinks outside the box and retrieves one of his many, many experiments from the Enterprise to use on the less advantaged Hathaway. While Riker initially accuses young Crusher of cheating, no one said he couldn’t sneak tools off the other ship, and it’s that kind of ingenuity that could be useful in a fight.
Tumblr media
Begin by letting go of your guilt, Wesley His mother Beverly may be on full display in “Remember Me” as we discussed last week, but Wesley also gets some interesting development. Back in “Where No One Has Gone Before” the Traveler saw potential in the child prodigy, and when the two of them use their special powers here to open the door for Dr. Crusher to return from the warp bubble, we witness some of that weird potential get unlocked.
Tumblr media
I’ve done it all because I want you to be proud of me We joke a lot on the podcast that Picard is secretly Wesley’s father, and it’s mostly for laughs. But when we get touching scenes between the two of them like the one in “Final Mission,” we think we may be onto something. Stranded on a planet without water, Wesley keeps an injured Picard alive (can’t say the same for Dirgo, but whatever), fueling paternity theories for years to come.
Tumblr media
I just lost the game After Wesley leaves the crew after “Final Mission,” his appearances are more methodical, and thus his character feels more and more appropriate each time. In “The Game,” he’s just visiting but his tendency to see how things work helps him and Lefler to discover that the video game everyone’s playing is actually harmful before the whole crew turns on them.
Tumblr media
I would like to add something to my testimony We get even more glimpses of how far Wesley has come when he’s attending Starfleet Academy in “The First Duty.” All of Nova Squadron has lied about the circumstances of Josh Albert’s flight accident, and it’s Wesley who comes clean in the end because he can’t bear the guilt and the dishonesty of covering up their nefarious actions. Take that, Locarno!
Tumblr media
These people deserve better than to be removed from their homes We found Picard’s actions inexcusable and entirely out of character in “Journey’s End” but you know who was actually on point? Wesley freakin’ Crusher. How on earth the boy was the only Starfleet-adjacent person to actually try to defend the colonists on Dorvan V is beyond us. It strikes us as opposing Federation ideals to force the colonists to move, and Wes knows that.
Tumblr media
I had to find my own path Finally, it is a fabulous resolution to the Wesley Crusher character for him to decide on his own to leave Starfleet and go with the Traveler to discover his true potential in “Journey’s End.” For too many kids, it’s the parents who put pressure on them to walk certain paths, and we celebrate Wes for finding his own. Ya know, until he’s randomly back in Starfleet for that cut scene from Nemesis for some reason.
Worst moments
Tumblr media
Wesley Saves the Day! Okay, I’m gonna lump all the obnoxious “Wesley Saves the Day!” instances into one blurb because it’s so damn repetitive. Every single time, Wesley – a child amidst some of Starfleet’s best of the best – figures out some impossible engineering problem before any of the adults in the room can, and we got so tired of it.
Whether it’s by getting drunk and taking over engineering only to use his reverse tractor beam in “The Naked Now,” or saving the day with the Traveler in “Where No One Has Gone Before,” or spotting Picard’s brain scan from across the room and deducing there are Ferengi shenanigans afoot in “The Battle,” or cracking the lock on the holodeck door while La Forge had already admitted defeat in “The Big Goodbye,” or seeing through Lore’s disguise as we mentioned above while all the adults in the room tell him to shut up in “Datalore,” or probably a ton of others all from the first season, it was clear no one knew how to write him except as some kind of magical prodigy. Alakazam!
Tumblr media
Keep off the grass It’s all the more clear that having a child character on the crew is just a cringey idea in “Justice.” Sure, it could have been anyone who broke the stringent rules of the Edo, but just the fact that it’s Wesley gallumphing through a flower bed like an uncoordinated doofus, destroying it utterly, makes us roll our eyes and seriously wish they’d let them execute the brat.
Tumblr media
Frosty the no-no man Let us not forget that it was Wesley who hit the captain with a snowball in “Angel One,” an immature and obnoxious little scene that seems to prove Picard’s point that letting children run roughshod all over the ship is an inconvenience at best and a liability at worst. And it happens to be the latter in this episode, because he ends up getting the whole ship sick with some disease!
Tumblr media
Drug Abuse Resistance Education is futile! While we can go on about Wesley’s whole exchange with Tasha about drug addiction in “Symbiosis,” what’s most egregious is how sheltered and clueless Wesley (normally some kind of child genius) has to be to not understand how narcotics work in the first place. It’s such a forced scene that we can just feel the Reagan Era war on drugs sentimentality written all over.
Tumblr media
I guess leaving’s gotten easy for you It’s easy to find fault with “The Outrageous Okona” – it is my least favorite TNG episode, after all. Literally everyone in this episode is annoying, and as usual, that includes Wesley who first idolizes the charming rogue, then seems really judgey of his independent and carefree lifestyle, and finally he sasses the guy into making him conclude the soap opera plot of the episode.
Tumblr media
How do you tell each other apart? It’s a pretty cheap joke when Wesley meets Mendon in “A Matter of Honor” and mistakes him for Mordock, whom we met in “Coming of Age.” I can’t tell if the writers were trying to make a racist “you people all look alike” kind of gag, but regardless, it makes Wesley look like an idiot for not knowing anything about Benzites and Benzite culture.
Tumblr media
Klingons hate surprise parties Everything Wesley does in “The Icarus Factor” is annoying. He blathers like a maniac at the impatient Klingon, but then takes that impatience to assume something greater is going on than just being fed up with an obnoxious tween like anyone else would be. But to make things more exasperating, the little twerp is right, as he always is, and throws Worf an Age of Ascension party. Ugh.
Tumblr media
I think that everything that’s been going wrong might be my fault It’s not until season three that, instead of saving the day as he did so many times already, Wesley actually screws up big by releasing the nanites in “Evolution.” While it’s refreshing to see Wes finally admit to some kind of flaw, his escaped nanites end up taking over the ship and start attacking people. And what’s worse is that he tries to lie about it until Guinan catches him!
Tumblr media
Broccoli on the side You’ll remember this from La Forge’s spotlight as well, but Geordi reveals in “Hollow Pursuits” that it was Wesley who initiated the cruel nickname “Broccoli” for Lt. Barclay. Wes, you might still be a child, but you’re in a room with adults so stop acting like one! I don’t know what’s worse: being such a dick to one of your coworkers, or all the adults in the room condoning it.
Tumblr media
I’m the one trapped in the bubble As if his misadventure in “Evolution” weren’t enough, Wesley botches another science experiment in “Remember Me” and nearly gets his mother killed in a pocket dimension! I know we just gave him some credit for bringing her back (though I mostly give that credit to the Traveler), someone’s got to stop letting Wes hook shit up to the warp core just because he’s the CMO’s kid! Nepotism much?
Tumblr media
The first duty of every Starfleet officer is to the truth Here’s another Wesley moment that ended up on both lists because as much as we can see the character growth and lesson learned when he comes clean in “The First Duty,” it also needs to be said that he is fully prepared to follow Nick Locarno like a little sheep. Wesley almost certainly wouldn’t have done the right thing in the end if Picard hadn’t basically threatened him first!
Tumblr media
You are out! Auf wiedersehen! Finally, we would be remiss if we didn’t poopoo Wesley’s fashion choices. Again. It’s a trainwreck of a fashion show. Sweater after sweater – all oversized, hideously patterned, and monstrously ugly. Ames has the full write up in an early blogpost: Wesley's Sweaters: An Unfashionable Collection, but this coral nightmare from “Where No One Has Gone Before” might take the cake.
Well, we’re off to go exploring with the Traveler, so that’s gonna wrap things up for this one. We’re back next week with more characters to spotlight and also more Enterprise to watch over on the podcast, which you can find on SoundCloud or wherever you listen. You can also get our help on your Academy entrance exams over on Facebook and Twitter, and watch out for those flowers!
Fic Writers Showcase Game
@there-must-be-a-lock tagged me!
Rules: Go to your published works on AO3 and list the first fic you ever published there, the last fic you published, any fic that you wrote for a fandom/ship only once, your favorite fic you wrote in the fandom/ship that has the most works, the fic you wish more people read, the fic you agonized over the most, the fic that sprang fully formed from your mind without any effort, and a work you are proud of—for whatever reason.
~~
First fic published on Ao3: That would be The Other Side of the Mirror, an Earth-3 continuity mess with a JayDick main pair, featuring Roy as a 3rd PoV. First chapter was posted in September, 2014, currently 200k, 20 chapters , and as of yet unfinished, though I think as it stands it ends on a decently hopeful note. I do still recall the main plot points of where it goes, and would like to finish it someday.
Last fic published: I posted the first chapter of Five Finger Discount just yesterday, which is the 5th piece in my Worth Counting series, an alpha!Slade/alpha!Jason series exploring a variety of kinks but with a focus on non-formal dom/sub vibes, competence/strength kink, and mostly-play fighting. (The last finished story was Shifting Into Fourth which is the 4th piece of that same series, so, I'm a little bit on a theme here.)
Fandom/ship I only wrote once: I uh. I wrote Hamilton/Jefferson/Madison room-where-it-happens porn. For the Hamilton musical. It's called Do Whatever It Takes and I think it is still the thing that makes me feel the most sinfully dirty of all the things I've ever written. So there's that.
I also have Let's Be Clear, which is my only fic set anywhere in the MCU, and is a Daredevil oneshot of an asexual!Wesley being invited to join a Fisk/Vanessa relationship, as I vibed real hard with Wesley as a character and never really got over his unfortunate demise.
(Honorable mention to my four stories that are technically fandoms of their own, but all fall under the 'DCU' umbrella, being for the Arkham games, two shows in the CW Arrowverse, and the Teen Titans cartoon.)
Favorite fic in most popular fandom/ship: This is a little hard to quantify. Technically 'DCU (Comics)' comes in at 93k in stories, which would make JayDick the most popular pairing, which makes my favorite story Captain's Privileges. It's a Star Trek mirror!verse fusion with Captain!Dick and Engineer!Jason and so many unhealthy relationships everywhere, and I love it.
However! 'DCU (Comics)' is a very broad umbrella and it's not really fair to say it's my biggest fandom, since the slice I belong to is much smaller. Which means the more accurate winner is Voltron, at 85k stories. I technically have a Klance story but given that it is a big poly clusterfuck dark!fic I really have to actually give this to the second most popular pairing by stat, Sheith. Out of those, I think my favorite is I'm Not That Man, which was an early false-memories/brainwashed!Shiro fic set just before the wormhole split them all up.
Fic I wish more people read: An Extra Shot, hands down. Come read my gen, Wilson-family-focused exploration of what happens if Adeline dies during the attack on Joey! Come read Slade Wilson being forced into confronting the fact that he is a terrible dad and also now a widowed dad of three kids! Come read Billy trying his best to bludgeon all the terrible communicators of this family into actually working things out! READ THIS. THERE'S A SEQUEL IN PROGRESS. IT'S GOOD I SWEAR.
Fic that was hardest to write: I think the award for this has to go to Me, Not Her, a CaptainPan/CaptainSwan piece which I was apparently so frustrated with at some point that I straight up deleted the file. Four years later (no I am not kidding) I had the vague memory of it. Some sketchy thing I could maybe expand, now that I was having thoughts about OUaT again. I pull it out of the (then eternal) trash of Google Drive. It is five thousand words long and needs no more than pretty basic editing and a little padding at the end to round it off. I don't know what the hell was happening with me when I deleted it, but wow, lesson learned.
Fic that popped out fully-formed: I don't recall any that were explicitly like this, but I also don't tend to write like, neat little packaged stories all that often. If I'm writing oneshots they're usually for events. So my best answer to this is probably Fucking Androids? It's a Reed900 relationship origin story that blazed its way out of me during NaNoWriMo one year, named entirely for the sex pun and then in the end absolutely refusing to have any sex in it, so it won that fight. I remember at least most of it coming really, really easy.
Fic I'm proud of: Pulling out a weird little one, here. I'm going to say Take a Ride. It's a JayDick, Gotham City Garage story that I wrote for Firefright's birthday one year, and on reread I actually still really, really like it? It's just a neat apocalyptic-desert vibe relationship building thing, set in the criminally under-explored and rushed GCG world, and I really like how I put Dick together in this one. I recommend it.
Not tagging anyone specific, but if anyone would like to do this as well, feel free!
lemme talk about some TTTE OCS!
So this was a long time coming. I tried to post an OC once before but I chickened out and deleted his post. So, here's some lore rundowns for a bunch of my OCs! And by that I mean all of 'em! And my sona, as a bonus! (and details on my personal canon!!!)
(This took me like 3 attempts to write because Tumblr kept eating the part about Wesley when I accidentally hit ctrl+z because I made a typo on Forsythia's basis :sob:)
Putting a break so I don't clog any tags haha
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, for the third time I am trying to write this (dear god), behold, Wesley the Show Engine (and his tender that I admittedly drew in a rush when I drew it)! Wesley is based on Furness No. 20's original batch of 0-4-0 locomotives, generally based on Furness No. 20 in design but less so in backstory. Canonically, he was made after that batch of locos but his build date is undecided still.
He was made for a Collector, Mr. Titus Lancaster. The two attended engine shows for years, and while Wesley enjoyed it, he was rather isolated from other engines and rolling stock for many years. He admired the railway working life from afar and longed to have it.
Eventually his wish would be granted in both his and his Collector's old age when he donated him to the NWR.
Wesley's a rather interesting character to me in his origins. He's an old engine but very inexperienced with the rails.
Personality-wise, he's kindhearted, hardworking, sincere, passionate, and would rather get along with others, but he can be very gullible (early on) due to his lack of experience, and is imbued with the spirit of Sodor's karmic justice itself. (Read: he's really vengeful at times. If you cross him, he wants to ensure you get your just desserts.)
He's humble and quick to admit to his mistakes and apologize when he messes up (an uncommon trait on the railways LOL), and while he's open-minded, he's also willing to admit he's a bit foolish and unworldly. He mainly works on Edward's Branch Line.
He likes snow and snowploughs (he finds them comfortable in the way a weighted blanket or lead x-ray wear is comfortable), karma, being out and about, any work at all, and bugs.
He dislikes being patronized/infantilized/treated as if he's stupid and incapable, geese (there was an incident), most animals, the sound of babies crying, and almost all trucks. He's open to the idea of there being trucks that aren't troublesome but he doesn't know any yet.
I'd like to highlight a central relationship he has in his stories, that of his relationship with Edward. The two were quick friends and once made eye contact at an engine show YEARS before they properly met (though neither recognized the other). Eventually that friendship became a tendency to want to work together more and more often, and the duo became very close indeed... and then they started being gay as all hell. Gay ol' engines. Good for them! (They get married in a plotline of mine. I'm dead serious. Gay train wedding!!!)
EDIT: Something I forgot to note! While he's also vengeful, he's insists on doing nice things for others who have done nice things for him. Everything is a two-way street. One turn deserves another, good or bad.
For reading all that, here's a Checkpoint Human!Wesley I drew.
Tumblr media
Moving right along, we have a narrow gauge duo!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I present to you Forsythia the Rambunctious Engine and Nicolas, her coach. Forsythia was based on the 2-4-0T Rheidol/Talybont/Treze de Maio and a fucked up kiddie ride I saw once.
Tumblr media
Yeah, it's a really fucked up kiddie ride.
These two are owned by Ms. Tiffany Lancaster, the niece of Wesley's former Collector (who has passed by the time she obtains these two). They are often loaned to the Skarloey to help out there (until a later event we'll touch on with the next OC).
These two got BWBA'd before I even knew what the hell was going on in BWBA. Except it's much more realistic and boring in execution. Just a lot of boring time on cargo ships with shipping mix-ups! They got to Sodor though, don't worry.
They've got the energy of childhood best friends imo. Also, Forsythia and Wesley consider one another cousins, but like, adoptive cousins specifically.
Forsythia is down to clown and is cheeky and mischievous and a prankster but she is an experienced variety. And she knows when to back off. And she will, if you ask her (and you're not on her list of Those She Is Close Enough To Clown Upon Always And Forever or Those I Hate)! I'd say she's... like... young adult or teenager -coded. She's very energetic and a Large Ham if you know about that trope.
Now, look at Nicolas, her coach. Tell me, when you look at him, do you think he's the serious sort? You'd be wrong there. He's also down to clown! And he's here for the shenanigans as well. He's simply the quiet, observant deadpan to Forsythia's rambunctious large ham.
[EDIT: I never noted that sometimes these two's antics involve collaborating with the Troublesome Trucks. Forsythia's always offended when the inevitable betrayal happens.]
Now for that lore thing I mentioned. I have an adaptation of Toby's Discovery in my AU in which TFC does not manage that part of the railway. Instead he does participate in its restoration but it is ran by none other than Tiffany Lancaster! Forsythia is the Ulfstead Heritage Railway's Engine No. 2! (Engine No. 1 is Bertram; Forsythia would've been No. 1 if some contract things with the Skarloey Railway didn't have to be sorted out first.)
[EDIT: Now that Forsythia and Nicolas are consistently on a railway, they do have a cluster of trucks that won't betray them because of how fun things just tend to be with those two.]
And on that railway, eventually there arrived a BR Class 12 Diesel, but refitted to narrow gauge.
Tumblr media
I present my final OC, Sycorax. Sycorax's arc is very dear to me because it has origins in both a random thought I had, a quote Awdry said in a video I watched, and my own opinions on locomotives and Sodor.
The video I've linked here made me have a realization about older diesels.
https://youtu.Be/h-xesjpiqgo?T=189
I can see where Awdry was coming from on this - he witnessed dieselization firsthand! But boy, I think diesels (and electrics!) have their charm and I'm really fond of them actually. I know it's very different as a modern reader who barely has any exposure to locomotives in person anyways due to the infrastructure of the United States just… Sucking sometimes, but nevertheless, my point stands.
Sycorax's arc starts with them in a most dire place: about to be scrapped. But fate saves them and they're refitted and brought to Sodor, where they find that, despite being the new thing, they're envious of steam engines, seeing their charm and the fact that they'll always be in fashion somewhere… And they feel generic and replaceable.
But eventually they start to realize that diesels become obsolete too. Now this is particularly regarding a dash of TVS canon but I like to think that the diesels of Sodor are there because Sodor, is too, a safe haven for them as well as steam engines. That's why absolute assholes stay around sometimes, it's because they've nowhere else to go. Sycorax realizes their envy is unwarranted, and that Sodor is a safehaven for all types of engines who need it, it's just that, at the time, steam engines needed it most. And they're not replaceable. And this is home now.
[EDIT: Forgot to add that they're the UHR (ulfstead heritage railway) No. 3!]
Thank you for reading all that. As a finale, let me briefly touch on my sona, The Secondman himself.
The Secondman is literally a self-insert/sona guy who's a human studying on modern day Sodor. He volunteers on the railways of the island often. He intends to immigrate there properly once he's done with his schooling. He's essentially is to me what the Thin Clergyman was to Awdry. In-universe, he writes my fanbooks, my silly little shitposts about various Engine Incidents, and a whole bunch of other things. And he's having a good time.
I haven't drawn him. But nevertheless!
Thank you SO MUCH for reading this loredump. I hope you enjoyed.
so the way DJ figures out he has caught feelings is when Wesley goes up north to meet family, the same yearly event that led to them meeting and he's like "damn! this sucks. my best friend's leaving for like a month" and they don't get to talk as regularly as they usually do and DJ is catching himself missing him way deeper than usual. Not necessarily more than his homesickness for the plex and his animatronic Bros but in a different way than what he would feel for a friend and he's just like "damn!!!! this double sucks!!!!"
So instead of just moping and sitting with it he's kicking his artistic talents to overdrive. He's busting out tunes and he's writing all this music and he's excited to eventually show it to Wesley but as the end of the month starts to come around he's looking back at the lyrics like "...were these always so romantically charged." And a lot of things are starting to fall in place as he's putting all the pieces together he's just like "this triple sucks!!! im a goddamn homosexual in this small ass town in the 1950's!!!!" and Wesley finally comes back to him with this epiphany and while DJ's happy he's back, now Wesley's back and he knows he has feelings for him. what happens next? Who knowwwssss
but rewind, the 1950's. Wesley was a kid around the 1920's since he's in the rubberhose animation style, and when we last see him/the day he dies, it's the peak of the hippie movement during the late 1960's and early 1970's. So Wesley's at least 40 something, probably 50, but the reason why I bring this up is that the first animatronic band was the Country Bear Jamboree in 1971 but the first restaurant that featured animatronic characters outside of Disney was Chuck e Cheese in 1977 - He would've died before animatronic bands were even a concept to be concieved, but of course, there was Mr Butlertron that was made in the 1920's right alongside with him.
So my question is, do I just shift the creation of animatronic bands back, or do I make DJMM a weird thing of his own (leaning towards the latter) but either way, a redesign might be in process since robot designs (the conceptuawere way different back then than they were now. Though weirdly enough they actually are kinda sleek and somewhat similar to the glamrocks' (though, not painted or colorful, very metallic).
Bonus: While doing research i actually found that there actually was a robot made in 1928 called Eric the Robot - a replacement for the Duke of York after he cancelled on opening an engineering exhibit at London's Royal Horticultural Hall that bowed and gave a speech in his place. The reason I bring him up is not just because he's a robot made in the 1920's, but because him and Mr Butlertron also have the exact same existential crisis, because the very first line of his speech was
“Ladies and gentlemen, I am Eric the robot, the man without a soul."
They're british robots made in the 1920's with the same existential crisis of having no soul. hmm
Tumblr media
To anyone who asks, he will tell the correct time; he will get up or sit down in obedience to the human voice, and if in the midst of a speech anyone anyone says sharply to him, “Shut up” – he shuts! The only serious work that his inventors have yet been able to get out of him is to make him drill holes either in wood or metal.
so mean. so mean to him
Also CAMERON
the only family member (or anyone he knew from our reality that he didnt meet in Miguel) that knows about his relationship with Miguel is his brother and it didnt go very well at all and was actually pretty angsty but all i had was this shitpost
OH GODS I SAID A THING™ AND NOW I CAN'T GET IT OUT OF MY HEAD:
Probably because of the Announcement of the Animated M9 Series, but...
"Wildemount. The final Continent. This is the story of a rag-tag band of mercenaries and sellswords. Their five year Campaign? Prevent a reality altering relic from falling into the wrong hands, discover new conspiracies between warring nations, and boldly go where no one has gone (for good reason) before."
I call this abomination of an idea: DEEP SPACE NEIN!
And yes, it's every bit as cursed as you can imagine a CR / Star Trek crossover to be!
Everyone needs their space on the UNSC-1909 "Mighty Nein":
Fjord "The Unwitting Face of the group" Stone: Captain. That one's obvious.
Beauregard "Beau" Lionett: Number One. Because she gets physical and FUCKS. You can blame Ryker for this one...
Yasha "Worf WISHES he hit this hard" Nydoorin: Security. Nuff said.
Caleb "my phaser doesn't have a Stun setting" Widogast: Navigation. Keen Mind once again comes in clutch!
Nott/Veth "The Brave" Brenatto: Engineering. Yeza helps as well! She's still CONSTANTLY smashed and that's how she does her best work!
Genevieve "Jester" Lavorre: Comms. This one is primarily because of the Message spell... During their travels, she finds a sterile Tribble she names "Sprinkle". Hilarity ensues.
Caduceus "Earl" Clay: Ship Doctor. Always a bit of tea on hand to talk about somebody else's problems. The crew knows better than to ask why he gets a new batch of tea whenever Spurt gets killed, though...
Mollymauk "Nine Eyes" Tealeaf: The hot bartender who illegally smuggled himself into the ship to escape a past he himself doesn't remember... Sees EVERYTHING. Knows everyone's secrets.
Essek "The Hover" Thelyss: That ONE guy in the Transponder room that energizes the teleporters. He seems unimportant until he gets promoted to Series Regular halfway through Season 2 due to his unexpected Political connections and insight.
He accidentally invented hover boots while messing around Engineering and now NEVER takes them off...
Bonus:
+ Pumat S.0.L: Ship's AI voice. Occasional holograms of him show up to manage the built-in shops, respectfully.
+ Kiri: Baby on board. The Wesley Crusher of the show. She and Luc get along quite well!
+ Shakaste: Chief Science Officer. Don't even give him LaForge shades. Have a little robotic Hummingbird called the Grand Duchess scan the area with sonar and directly transmit the info to his brain!
+ Calliana: Pilot. She flies the ship. Whether it's smooth sailing or crazy, death-defying acrobatics depends on her mood that day.
+ Spurt: The Red Shirt. It's always him. The same one. He always dies and comes back next episode like nothing ever happened. Nobody acknowledges this. "It's been 11 days since Spurt last went Splat".
+ Keg: A down-on-her-luck space smuggler the crew encounters on occasion. She's almost never followed by good news, but she's good for her word, and (with some "persuasion" from Beau) will usually help the crew out of a pinch.
+ Nila: She and her family were diplomats/emissaries for a pacifist race, but when her husband and child get kidnapped by Keg's old partners in crime, the Iron Shepherds, Nila proves to be a formidable spy on top of a ferocious fighter...
+ Reani: Still a vigilante, plain and simple. She goes from planet to planet "rescuing" people with her own lethal brand of justice. Her abilities as a shapeshifter and her interest in biology make her a valuable ally though, not to mention that she knows just about every shady person on any given sector...
+ Twiggy: The ship's resident Archeologist, albeit the most eccentric member of the crew. She specializes in identifying where magical artifacts come from, and dragging the crew on "archeological escapades" for "Science". Her pet squirrel Trixie and Caleb's cat Frumpkin seem to be good friends, but neither of them feel comfortable around Sprinkle for some reason...
+ Yussa: The Negotiator. Not because he can smooth-talk anyone, that's Fjord's thing. No, Yussa's the negotiator because of how EASILY he can figure out what everybody wants. Although he keeps a calm exterior, he has a habit of taking EVERYTHING regarding anything that resembles a puzzle or a mystery as a challenge, and his hubris WILL get the crew into trouble more than once...
Occasional antagonists include:
# The Iron Shepherds: Led by the dreadful Lorenzo, these low life slavers make their credits pulling the most despicable jobs... Regardless of who pays for them, so long as the job is paid for.
# Captain Avantika: Obligatory femme fatale with a thing for Fjord. Whether it's a relationship born of convenience, manipulation or simply blind worship towards the same thing, nobody can really tell. The pirate captain of the "Squalleater" is OBSESSED with releasing an entity which she believes to be an ancient god, hidden in the farthest reaches of space... And only the crew can stop her from achieving her malicious goal.
# Obann and the Unkillable Family: Much like Avantika, the God-releasing MO stands, but rather than getting their followers by power of charisma or duty, the crew of the ravager ship "Angel of Irons" directly controls the minds of the people they believe might help them accomplish their goal... Including the Nein's own Chief of Security for a time.
# Special Guest Star Matthew Mercer as "The Traveler": He's Q. That's it. He's JUST Q. There is no joke, there is no agenda other than wanting to become a God himself, but taking such a liking to Jester that he can never endanger the crew to continue his schemes, so he finds ways to trick them into helping him out... Mostly by pretending to be a sterile Tribble and arousing chaos wherever he goes.
And that's what I've got! Let me know what you think! I'm not very good at AUs, but I couldn't get this idea out of my head!
a star trek theme park
in the "magic kingdom" type place is starfleet academy. rides include Red Squad, a wild rollercoaster, and maybe a log-ride style where an experiment with tilly goes wrong. obviously actors walking around. if you're lucky, you can catch boothby cleaning up and he'll tell you a story of young jean luc picard. you can "transport" to Sisko's in new orleans, where there is a great display of Creole/Cajun futurism.
then of course you have a starship-type area of the park. you can visit engineering and medical, with interactive panels. there's a shuttlecraft ride (think star tours from back in the day). you may run into chief o'brien or lt lefler. twice a day is a red alert and potential warp core breach, and at night it ends in fireworks and a show featuring geordi and data. there's also a 3D chess experience, and wesley can take you on an informative tour about space and advancements (a la hall of presidents).
now let's go to q'onos. there's hunting (laser tag), a space-mountain esque rollercoaster where you are in a klingon bird of prey being commander by general martok, and probably some bungee ride called the Klingon Death Drop. it's also home to the biggest food area, a huge dark cafeteria with klingon and human food. also about four times a day is a show featuring a klingon fight to the death (think medieval times).
deep space 9 would be kind of like epcot. i like the idea of a tour-type ride through deep space 9 featuring odo. obviously for the adults you can go to quarks and sample beer from around the quadrant. a dumbo-esque shuttlecraft ride featuring all the runabouts. if you're reeeeeally lucky, you'll run into harry kim or tom paris, but they're not there for long.
misc ideas: characters are stationed around the park. sometimes they'll need help from park guests to fix a panel (ie, lil kids) and they always have a fun story. there's hidden deltas you can find around the park. there's a "get the crew of voyager home game" where you have to collect all signatures from voyager crew members to help get them home. pin trading in the form of insignia of every kind, planet, and era. jumja stick stands, romulan ale cocktails, even an exotic restaurant that serves cardassian and orion food.
just call me paramount, okay? i have way more where this came from.
Chronotrek: TNG S1 Part 1
For those who are seeing this in their tags for the first time- before this, I'd only seen the Abrams movies and a handful of episodes across the various Trek serieseseses. I've been doing as close to a blind, chronological viewing as possible, only shifting between shows at the ends of seasons (not jumping around if there's time travel involved.) So far, I've gotten through Enterprise, S 1 Discovery, Short Trek/TOS Pilot, Disco 2, Short Treks, Strange New Worlds, TOS, TAS, and the 6 TOS movies. I'm now venturing into The Next Generation.
The first 6/7 episodes have given me the following observations:
1- I hate how leaned back the chairs in the front are. Reminds me of my person's car and how I always have to pull up the seat because it feels like I'm laying down and can't drive.
Hey, I've heard of Q. Why would Picard assume that Q knows 1) what a phaser is and 2) what setting it is on?
I'm kind of glad that they immediately went to having a musketeer beam aboard lest someone think this is a serious show lol
Was that engineer in shorts? Oh... some of the men wear _skirts_? Let me look something up... Skants. I feel like this needs that Will Smith gif about he's a little confused but has the spirit lmao. That's a terrible name, though (as is skort tbh and that one's real).
There's a _battle bridge_? And you can separate the saucer? I guess that's how they get away with this being a ship with families on it, though I'm not really clear on WHY they have families aboard. Is it intended to be away from spacedock for years on end? Or a generational ship?
Why would they do such a risky maneuver (separation at speed) just because they don't know what Q is?
Riker looks so silly clean-shaven. My mental image of him certainly includes the beard.
Fun fact: I have a cousin named Ryker after Riker.
3- Why did everyone hate Wesley so much? That's basically all I know about the character- that fans hated him. And that it's Wil Wheaton.
silly!Picard is ridiculous. Such a contrast to the mental image I have of him.
5- Still pulling everyone off the bridge (away from their consoles) to chat, huh? What if something were to happen that required quick response?
Four eps in and Picard has basically surrendered twice?
Riker is... comically oversized compared to the rest of the crew.
6- I really don't understand why Wesley was so hated. I mean he's pretty obviously someone's self-insert (or supposed to be the relatable figure for the younger viewers) akin to the teen heroes of dystopian fic. He's basically just Trek's version of Anakin or Luke. But usually male fans eat that shit up. Was it mostly the older TOS fans who didn't like him because he's young and 'obnoxious' and not 'paying his dues' etc etc bc the older fans saw him (and young fans) as a threat to their egos and their perceived superiority in trekdom?
8- Oh so they actually leave the captain on the bridge now? Reminds me of our houseboat trips on the lake in ROTC- I much preferred being XO to CO- I got to be hands on instead of just giving orders. The CO wasn't allowed to _do_ practically anything.
[initial reactions] Star Trek: SNW 2x09 - Subspace Rhapsody
This was a fun musical episode! I still say Trek shows should be more than 10 episodes because there are some character beats here that feel it needs more than a few episodes to just be and breathe.
(Once again laughing that Paul Wesley managed to escape a musical in TVD only to leap headfirst into a show that would do a musical and he can't walk away. This is laughing in fun btw 'cause I do like Paul Wasilewski and his real-life snarky dry sense of humor, but also, HAHAHA. They got you, Wasilewski!)
I liked it! It wasn't Buffy the Musical, but that's okay, it was fun and it moved character arcs along!
I haven't mentioned before but I really love the medical uniform Chapel's wearing, which I think originated from Discovery s1 and 2.
I love how it took a while for Uhura to sing but when she did, she hit a breakthrough. I love that this was her episode but it wasn't just about Uhura.
The musical numbers I really enjoyed: Uhura's solo, La'an's solo, and Chapel's whole musical number. The three strongest singers of the show.
I'm glad that La'an was able to tell her secret because it was weighing on her so much and I'm glad that
Speaking of episodes where character beats needed more than 10 episodes. It's such a whiplash to go from Spock and T'Pol breaking up to Christine and Spock being together for what 2 episodes? I am glad we got Christine's song how this was something that can change her life forever. (If I'm not mistaken that guy running the program will be her ill-fated fiance). But we've gone from Christine pinint for Spock, to being ambivalent with him, to Boimler throwing cold water into the fledgling relationship with Spock. I wish we got to see Spock and Christine have just an episode or more to be in a relationship and happy.
There's not enough Pelia! (Speaking of, where are the other engineers? I know the answer is most likely covid restrictions but I wish there were some engineers working in Engineering in the background).
You know what? I've tried but I just had a thrill of happiness at all the moments Spock and Uhura were together. I know it's not as popular a ship as Spock/Kirk and Spock/Chapel but the TOS version I'm most familiar with (aside from the original TOS movies) is AOS. And since then Spock/Uhura is my ship. So, I'm just gonna embrace it. I ship them!
The Klingon boy band!
Uhura really is my favorite! I love how she started as someone uncertain of Starfleet to finding connection and family in the Enterprise even though she still felt alone at times. I love that Communications Officer is a vital part of ship's functions. Also, with the way Uhura is, it makes so much sense she makes Captain in the future. She has an air of someone who would be so good in Command.
Speaking of, I wish Discovery had these kind of fun episodes instead of one long story and I think this episode really highlighted the problem with the crew of Disco. Aside from 4 characters we really don't know the Disco crew as well as the SNW crew, I don't know what the Disco bridge crew's 'I want song'.
"I wan't" songs are, according to Playbill:
"The term is thought to have been coined by Lehman Engel, founder of the BMI Workshop for musical theatre composers, librettists, and lyricists. These songs are more than just inspiring musical numbers—in many cases, they launch the journey of a play, allowing the audience to get an inside look at force driving a character's action. They express a dissatisfaction or a dream of the character that propels them through the musical."
It's really sad that it seems season 5 is the season when the show regains their sense of fun. I hope the crew is written more of an ensemble in the final season. Disco is a good show, it just really needs to fix its ensemble writing.
Back to SNW, that was such a fun episode I'm also glad Una's taking her second chance to build more relationships and be more open with her crew. It makes sense.
BTW with all the Red in security and the Gold in Command... it occurred to me that SNW Enterprise crew probably thought Mariner and Boimler were Ops!
Anyway, that's a good episode! Good penultimate episode!
SNW Idea: “The Doctor’s Wife” but Make It Star Trek??
Of all Starfleet vessels, TOS’s NCC-1701 Enterprise is the one that is the most often directly personified as “a beautiful lady/woman/she/her”. Even more so than the NX-1701 or any iterations that come after the first NCC model, even in Kirk’s era with him aboard. After we get to the NCC-1701-A from The Voyage Home that allegory dwindles significantly.
However in SNW we haven’t seen the crew, not even Pike, not even Hemmer, refer to the Enterprise like she’s a person. Chris & La’an tell the crew “she’ll hold.” in Memento Mori, but that’s the full extent of it so far. They don’t take it to anywhere near the same level that Kirk or Scotty do. Edit: Scratch that! Erica definitely has a weird thing for the Enterprise akin to Kirk’s and Scotty’s 😂 still!
Which begs the possibility! What if the implication that the Enterprise is practically a living, breathing person became very, very literal?
What if somehow, through the usual insanity Star Trek generally creates, the Enterprise somehow becomes a human(oid) woman temporarily?
That presents a really interesting possibility with funny, heartwarming and heartbreaking implications. That Kirk and/or Scotty form a strong emotional connection with Human(oid)!Enterprise before she returns to her original form.
Not only that but we will definitely see Paul Wesley’s Kirk sprinkled throughout SNW as time goes on. Chances are Scotty will be showing up soon if not as chief engineer, lined up for a promotion.
Could you imagine Kirk making a deep connection with a woman and it turns out to be the Enterprise and he’s NEVER the wiser about it being the ship/her. He just knows he’s got an unusually sentimental attachment to the vessel before he even becomes its Captain?!
It could be something that would connect Jim to the soul of the NCC-1701 in a way that was never possible for any other Starfleet Captain. Something none of the others could or will achieve because it was ultimately an accident?! Talk about poetic cinema and reoccurring themes!
Scotty would be a narratively interesting choice too! Scotty has always treated the Enterprise with the same charming chivalry and protectiveness he treats his love interests with in TOS. Defending her honor when she’s implied to be a garbage scow. Among many other instances that reinforce the Enterprise is more than just a well-crafted ship to him.
I could really see a bittersweet shenanigans episode where a humanoid woman shows up and the Enterprise shuts down at the same time. Scotty being the first (maybe only) person to figure out the connection, possibly emotionally connect to her, but ultimately end up having to set things back to the way they were before. Thus being Scotty’s little secret because trying to explain it would be strange and difficult.
Either or both of these characters knowing/feeling on some level that the Enterprise is alive, or at least was, would be amazing commentary on moments like “now I know why it’s called she.”
Not only that, but it would make her demise all the more emotional when she finally meets her end in The Search for Spock.
