Helen,

The equipment we recovered in June has great potential for us to reverse engineer and apply what we learn elsewhere, but the biological components remain a point of failure. Unfortunately, unit W-32's design makes them a requirement.

Using an organic brain to handle object recognition is TFI's most cost-effective option, as shown by the attached spreadsheet. Electronic equivalents are either too expensive or too large to install into the unit. The only alternative to the current set-up is to have W-32 carry a GPU the size of a refrigerator, and the rework would still cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Our supplier in Australia has a one year lead time. Simply put, this alternative is not on the table for us.

Unfortunately, the lab has detected some unwanted electrical activity in the brain. It was neither a result of the CPU interface or of the various autonomic processes that keep the other organic parts functioning. Technicians and medical staff are stumped on how to proceed. Some have even stepped away from this project entirely, citing some deeply held convictions. To correct this misunderstanding, I've sent out a memo to reassure personnel of the following points:

1. The subject utilized for W-32 is legally deceased and had been previously declared braindead by our medical staff.

2. W-32, or any of the parts that comprise it is/are not, by legal definition, a person.

3. Sentience is not part of the product direction, and any semblance of such should be discouraged.

4. Unauthorized tampering with TFI or administration property is a violation of our employee code of conduct.

An all hands meeting among Admin engineering group will be held in the next couple weeks and, if all goes well, plans to mitigate this recent design flaw will take effect as soon as next month. We're looking at implementing some new software so that material costs remain the same.
